in delphi, indiana. guilty on all counts. it's the verdict that the families of liberty, german and abigail williams have been waiting to hear for over seven years. richard allen, convicted of slaying the young girls after they went for a hike in delphi, indiana, in 2017. >> we knew it was brewing outside of the courthouse. all of a sudden, someone comes out and says, guilty and it erupts. my god, he has. >> veteran broadcast journalist susan hendricks has covered the four week trial and was outside the courtroom when the verdict was read. >> there was a lot of anxiety surrounding this, so when we heard it, it was, oh my gosh. because it could have gone either way. the young man, prosecutors say this was richard allen's voice captured on liberty german's phone. >> he came across the girls on the monon high bridge telling them to go down the hill near the hiking trail. the phone also capturing this grainy image of

allen before investigators say he led them down the hill where he would cut their throats. the video, a crucial piece of evidence if it weren't for libby hitting record on her phone that day and having the wherewithal to do so, i do not believe that richard allen would have been found guilty because of a gag order. indiana state police are unable to say whether this is the end of their investigation, or if they feel allen acted alone. >> i do believe the investigation is over, but i understand why people think there were other people involved. >> hendricks says that's because the guilty verdict comes after defense attorneys argued there was little evidence placing allen at the crime scene. only an unspent bullet found there that matched allen's gun, and there was no dna found at the scene or on the girls. prosecutors using more than 60 of his own confessions to his

wife and mother from calls he made while he was behind bars, the defense argued those calls were made while allen was in a declining mental state after being kept in solitary confinement, but it was still enough for a jury to convict allen enough to give the family the peace they sought for abigail and liberty. >> they sat through every single day having to take off from work, having to come there every single day, see horrific crime scene photos, see autopsy photos, the worst of the worst. and they faced it. and it came to a conclusion that they wante. >> now we turn to our next story, an update on the gilgo beach serial killer, a mystery that has been growing over the years with multiple bodies discovered on long island. it's a story that has gripped new yorkers and the rest of the country. but now there may be a new obstacle in the case against the prime suspect architect rex heuermann. he's the man

prosecutors say terrorized gilgo beach on long island, new york, for over two decades. rex heuermann, a new york city architect, is now awaiting tria, charged with the grisly slayings of six young women, mostly sex workers, found in a mass grave. >> from the beginning of this investigation. the police department has been totally inadequate and has not been up to the task of investigating this case, and that has not significantly changed a case that john ray, an attorney for some of the alleged victims, says has been a challenge from the start. they just don't have the capacity to really do the work. there are many good detectives there. i don't disrespect them in any way. >> but with rex heuermann behind bars and a murder trial on the horizon, is the prosecution

ready? suffolk county district attorney ray tierney says his office is strapped for cash and is asking the feds to release $13 million in forfeiture funds so his office can meet a judge's order to be ready for a december hearing. when a trial date is expected to be set. >> we are respectfully requesting that the federal government release some of our forfeiture funds so we can utilize that money to defray costs associated with the gilgo beach case. >> are you going to make that deadline? >> so we're going to do everything we can to make sure that we comply with the judge's directive. >> the da calling the schedule ambitious, saying it will require round the clock work to get the defense. the massive amount of discovery materials spanning 13 years, including dna and interview evidence extracted from over 400 electronic devices. >> it's a time consuming process. in order to comply with everything we would like to have

access to that money so we could do it. >> and with the victims families hoping to get justice in a courtroom, some claim his own family could be victims too. after saying they were shocked to learn rex was the suspected killer, they're innocent bystanders. >> they have no idea that they're part of the facade in any way. >> melissa moore is one of the few people who could understand the documentary filmmaker is also the daughter of keith hunter jesperson, the notorious happy face killer convicted in the murders of eight women and known for his drawings on anonymous letters. melissa spent time with rex, herman's wife asa, and her family after his arrest in 1995. >> my father was arrested for being known as the happy face serial killer and when the news broke that this family was suffering in the same circumstances that my family suffered, i knew i wanted to come forward and start sharing

my story so that i could, in some way, help educate the public on what probably asa and her children are experiencing in these rarely seen photos obtained by true crime news, rex herman is looking every bit the suburban father living under the detective's noses. >> and if allegations are true, also living a double life as a serial killer. but could he have kept this all a secret from his family? how could they not know? they must have seen something. is that a fair question? >> a serial killer is not going to tell their family what they're doing. how could she have known it took forever for the authorities to figure out that he could be it. >> this is what the herman home looked like after investigators turned the house upside down, looking for evidence revealing a makeshift secret bunker where they found 279 guns in the basement. did you see what everyone is describing as this gun vault? yes. yes. so, what is

it? >> it's a walk in room that has wood paneling. you can see all the beams underneath the house. the door is like a bank vault door. >> what did the family think was going on in that room? >> vault? that it was used for gun storage? >> mostly distraught. her whole life has just been turned upside down. >> asa has now filed for divorce from herman after 27 years of marriage. her legal team says she always looked at her husband as her hero until the day he was arrested. >> he saved her out of a difficult situation in her first marriage. he was the best thing for her at that time and that was what their marriage was based on. >> but the victims attorney says he's not sure the family was blind to everything, saying, it's hard to believe that someone living through 30 years of marriage would not know something. >> yeah, they were victims. are you never responsible for what you do because you were a victim? yeah. that's arguable. i suppose in some cases, i don't

>> we turn now to the murder of jesse blodgett, an aspiring actress who wanted to change the world through music. but jesse's life would be cut short by a mystery attacker as she slept in

her bedroom. i went to wisconsin to investigate the search for her killer. so when you're in trouble. this was jesse blodgett, the essence of who she was. and on most days, how you'd find her is if we ever stop living this life. >> oh, so suddenly, what was she like as a little girl? >> she was brilliant. in first grade, the teacher created her own curriculum for jesse. and when the classes spelling words were and the génesis first one was metamorphosis. an anesthesiologist. >> but in the end, it always came back to music. jesse wasn't the only exceptional talent in hartford. enter her good friend and classmate dan bartelt. >> dan and jess sat next to each other every day in school. all through high school, dan was a gifted violinist.

>> they shared a love for the stage and at one point for each other. >> they dated for about 3 or 4 months. freshman year of high school, they broke up. >> after high school. jesse and dan went away to different colleges, but they reconnected the following summer. >> i know that they became really close when he had dropped out of college. they would play music together all the time. they were collaborating. >> dan landed a starring role in bye bye birdie and jesse. >> jesse was the fiddler in fiddler on the roof by the hartford players. >> here she is playing for a packed house on opening weekend. and jesse is later seen at this cast party celebrating and having fun. >> that was her last night on earth. >> around eight the next morning, jesse's mom, joy, dropped some laundry off in jesse's room before heading to work. >> jesse was asleep in her bed and everything was fine for hours after that, jesse's mom returned home for her lunch

break. >> the house was quiet. >> she always just thought she was sleeping in. she was a teenager on break, but when she went to wake her daughter, she touched her and jesse was cold. >> oh my god, oh my god. >> hartford, 911. what's your emergency? >> my daughter is blue. i went to wake her up and i just got home from her lunch and she won't wake up. she's like, oh my god. >> jesse is unresponsive, covered up in her own bed. >> she rolled her over and she saw ligature marks. honey, what happened to, you know? >> noé. >> that's how we found her dead. >> jesse blodgett was just 19 years old. >> i couldn't say goodbye. i couldn't tell her i loved her, and i couldn't tell her i was sorry for not being there when she needed her dad.

son matches the profile. >> i told him we needed to talk to him and he said okay. i asked him where he was. he said he was at jesse blodgett's vigil. >> you heard that right? he was in jesse's parents house where she was killed. his name? daniel bartelt. jesse's one time boyfriend. when the police called dan. >> dan was at our house crying over jesse. >> yeah. >> and sharing memories with us. >> but when police returned to the park, they uncover a side of daniel that no one could have possibly imagined. >> they go take all the trash out of the trash bins at woodlawn park. they find the cereal box along with rope, a roll of duct tape, and dan's blood on multiple items at his house, detectives find grotesque images on his computer. >> what do you think happened to jesse? >> pilittere. the walls are closing in on dan. melissa, the attack victim, has positively

id'd him in a lineup. they reveal finding rope in the trash at the park. that rope lines up perfectly with the ligature marks on jesse blodgett's neck. and did he rape her? >> we found dna that indicated that he assaulted her. >> dan is charged with first degree intentional homicide of his old friend jesse. at trial, daniel is found guilty of first degree intentional homicide and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole. >> i can't prove that i'm innocent to anyone, not even myself. my conscience is clear. >> when jesse's father speaks in court, he turns to his daughter's killer. and to the surprise of many, he says this i forgive you, as i have every single day since we found out it was you. >> i believe there's good and bad in every one of us. so i don't demonize or vilify you. >> i'll never be okay with what dan did to jesse. but jesse's
