killed her. today, in a true crime news exclusive, she is speaking out for the first time since a jury convicted the man of murder. >> speak to the role that her friends helped play in ultimately getting this conviction. >> what didn't they do, i guess. >> megan kingsbury may have been the first person to blast social media with what turned into a viral distress call, looking for her missing sister, 26 year old mother of two madeline kingsbury of winona, minnesota. tiktok. >> i need you to do your thing. i need your help. this is my sister, madeline kingsbury. she's missing. >> but it was an army of madeline's closest friends and sorority sisters that sprang into action in response. >> as soon as they heard something was wrong. everybody rallied together. everybody was asking questions, contacting law

enforcement, providing resources. >> when madeline's boyfriend, adam franmil was finally convicted of her murder just weeks ago, her family acknowledged the team effort it took to crack this case. >> many people don't have that experience, so i think we're very, very lucky. >> i do think most of us, just right away, like, knew it was adam. >> lauren dubois was one of madeline's closest friends. that's her standing behind the family during their press conference. >> i get a text message, and it's a screenshot of her missing poster. and, i mean, i immediately knew. >> she tells true crime news that in the days leading up to madeleine's disappearance, her friends were well aware of adam's physical and emotional abuse. >> personally, after i had a conversation with her at mayo clinic, a couple weeks prior and i was very nervous about some of the things she said, i said, maddie, will you let me call and

make the police report? i said, i won't send them, send them to your house. i won't ask for a wellness check. i just want it documented. and she really didn't want it. >> but on the very day she went missing after dropping her kids at daycare with franmil, madeline had plans to leave him for good. >> as we learned more about patterns of domestic violence, the 48 hours before a person leaves is said to be the most dangerous. her hope was to start moving out that monday. >> it was madeline's friends who first flagged that she was not answering her phone or socials that day. it quickly escalated the case in a way that caught her boyfriend off guard. >> i don't think that he thought anybody was going to be calling the police. that night. i think at one point he texted his friend and said, why is everyone so worried? it's not even been 24 hours yet. why is everyone freaking out? >> and as the police conducted

their search, maddie's friends quickly got busy coordinating the community right away. >> the sorority sisters were incredible. they started putting together searches. they were sending out maps of the winona area. i was crawling through cemeteries knee deep in dumpsters, crawling through culverts, trying to find her. >> sadly, it would take several more months before police located her body, wrapped in duct tape and a bed sheet in a drainage culvert on a property owned by adam's parents. >> i went to my call log. my entire call log was read from missed calls. i closed my eyes and i scrolled on the log and i just hit a name and my friend michaela answered the phone and she just took a giant breath and she said, i'm so sorry. it's over. they found her. she's gone. but they found her in adam's bed, arrested.

>> lauren did have one last chance to face adam as a witness during the trial. >> i just tried not to look at him. i mean, i glanced over a couple times, but i didn't want to even give him the satisfaction of my attention. and i certainly didn't want to give him the satisfaction of me crying on the stand. >> prosecutors say franmil was jealous because kingsbury was in another relationship and tired of the abuse. franmil also depended on kingsbury financially. with a guilty verdict and a possible life sentence, lauren says madeline's family hoped to use her story through a family foundation to help other victims of domestic violence escape alive. >> we might not have saved maddie, but there's women and people just out there who are going to have a much easier life because adam's not out there anymore. >> madeline's family agrees. >> the jury and the state struck

now we turn to myrtle beach, south carolina. that's where 17 year old brittanee drexel headed with some friends to kick back and relax on spring break. little did she know that evil was waiting for her. >> i was a monster, a monster. i took brittany and grabbed her like this grandfatherly man, throwing himself on the mercy of the court is serial rapist and convicted killer ray moody. i don't have the words to express how horrible feel, and i've felt ever since that day. >> for 13 years, he lied to authorities that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of 17 year old brittanee drexel. despite being a person of

interest early in her case. 30-30 ray eventually turned himself in for murder after detectives heard all they needed to hear in this rarely seen interrogation. >> that's when i made a bad decision. bad. and i don't know all that shawaryn luther. >> you're dealing with a serial rapist at this point. maybe not a serial murder, but you don't want to trust ray. >> but law enforcement wondered if it was all a manipulation by a self-described monster in order to protect another suspect in the case. >> i don't for a minute believe all of this story. >> she was just a sweet, caring, loving person. she loved her friends. she loved her family. her brother and sister meant the world to her. >> it began with a cold winter in the great lakes town of chilly new york, where high school junior brittanee drexel

wanted to warm up with some friends for spring break on the south carolina coast. >> and i told her, i said no, brittany. she goes, why? nothing's going to happen to me, mom. i said, brittany, there's no parental supervision, i don't know. these kids are going with. and i said, something's going to happen to you, but rather than heed the advice of mom, dawn drexel, brittany lied, saying that she was spending the week at a nearby house on lake ontario instead, they had put this person on the phone and i thought i was talking to a parent, and i told her that she could stay. since, you know, it was her spring break. >> and that's when brittany and three other friends jumped in a car and road tripped 14 hours to party with the crowds on south carolina's myrtle beach. >> brittany never lied to me as far as i knew. >> brittany's boyfriend, john greco, stayed behind to work in new york, the two normally texted constantly, but at 8:58

p.m. on the night of april 25th, brittany stopped answering her phone. >> brittany had been texting john, the whole time. that whole day, that whole night. they kept going back and forth. he was asking her questions and then all of a sudden, all communication stopped with brittany. >> the next morning, john reached out to her mother. >> he's like, she's in myrtle beach. and they can't find her. i said, what do you mean they can't find her? i'm like, what? >> cell phone data would show brittany's phone traveling south out of myrtle beach, last pinging near the pole yards. that's a 45 minute drive away in sleepy georgetown county. >> my heart just sank. i thought that she was here the whole time, and i felt in my heart that she had made this decision that may have cost her her life for 13 years. >> that was the last anyone had seen or heard from brittany. but

the silence would eventually end when investigators in myrtle beach finally pinned down the sexual predator. ray moody. >> georgetown is totally different than myrtle beach, and everybody there thought the boogeyman was ray moody and ray did it. ray had grown up in georgetown, got in trouble in san diego. he got a 40 year sentence for raping kids, and once he was released, he and his prison boyfriend moved back to georgetown after 20 years of his 40 year sentence, california released ray moody on parole for six serial rapes. >> one victim was just eight. ray and his prison boyfriend, ernie merchant, thought georgetown would be a good place to start over, and after a couple of months and a new job

at a cabinet factory, ray also began seeing a local single mom named angel voss, but he was back and forth between ernie and angel on the night brittany went missing. ray and angel were also headed to myrtle beach, looking to party. ray knows georgetown authorities have a tracking device on his truck because he is a registered sex offender. but the night in question, he asked angel to borrow her brother's truck to hit the strip in myrtle beach. >> everybody goes, yeah, you should try the strip. just people watching this stuff, you know? >> moody says he and his girlfriend, angel voss, met brittany walking on the sidewalk going down the strip, smoking pot, and she looked over and she said, that smells pretty good. >> yes. good. what would you like some. >> and ray says brittany willingly entered his truck,

footage as she's leaving a hotel and texting to meet up with friends for one last night of spring break. over a decade later, a serial rapist from nearby georgetown county, south carolina. raymond moody confesses to raping and murdering brittany that night when i was by myself with her. >> things got out of hand. panicked, she panicked, and i strangled her. >> police had suspected ray in the first weeks after brittany went missing. a monitored sex offender, he served 20 years of a 40 year sentence for rape and abduction in california. but when they questioned his girlfriend, angel voss, she covers for him with an alibi. >> the brittany drexel she went missing april 25th, 2009. we arnesson can't tell you where i was two weeks ago. or really, where he was. you got to be truthful 100%. can you do that for me?

>> tell me about. i don't know anything. >> two years later, when another young woman, heather elvis, goes missing, georgetown police question ray again. and this time angel says something very different about brittany. >> so angel was saying to this girl, i'm sick and tired of these people around georgetown and myrtle beach trying to point toward ray moody if they were to come and say that we had something to do with brittany drexel, that might be a different matter. >> when angel's friend hears that she contacts myrtle beach police. >> myrtle beach got her to wire up and go back a few days later and talk to angel voss again, and she goes on to say, ray didn't have anything to do with brittany drexel. i killed brittany drexel. >> now the fbi have angel on obstruction and murder charges. but knowing law enforcement is closing in. angel and ray race to leave town in the fbi drives up.

>> ray is backing out the unmarked cars pull up and ray rolls down the window very defiantly says some ugly words and the feds say, hey, ray, you got it all wrong, bud. you're clear. we don't have anything on you. we're going after angel. and just like that, ray flips ray through his attorney tells richardson he is the only person responsible for brittany's death, and he will help close the case. >> on one condition. >> i can be a man of my word and you all can be a man of your word. i'll take you right where the body is. but i feel like you ain't gonna be a man of your word. i can never get that body. yeah, that's a fact. >> the condition prosecutors wouldn't charge angel for any role in brittany's murder. >> it was really a surprise that a person who is capable of such terrible acts would flip that

quickly. >> i ride my own beef, i did this, yeah. angel has been a victim of mine for a long time. >> richardson agrees. and with all the talking done, ray leads them to a shallow grave on the other side of the santee river, where he left brittanee drexel. >> he said, right here and within five yards of that is where they found the bone. >> prosecutors closed brittany's case, but law enforcement are wary of taking ray or angel at their word. >> you're dealing with a serial rapist at this point. maybe not a serial murder, but you don't want to trust ray. >> angel is not charged for brittany's murder. you have to be truthful 100%. >> can you do that for me? tell me about it. i don't know anything, but she is prosecuted for multiple counts of lying to law enforcement about being in the car. >> when ray picked up brittany
