plus a beautiful 18 year old high schooler is attacked by a group of boys at a party and someone secretly records it. she calls her family. >> she said, i'm in my car. and he said, where is your car? and she said, i don't know. >> and that was the last time anyone heard from ebby steppach until a break in the case. can new technology solve the mystery? your daily source for true crime starts right now. thanks for joining us. we begin with one of the most infamous crime cases in american history. it was impossible to comprehend then, and it is still to this day. susan smith, convicted of killing her young boys by strapping them into their car seats and sending them to their deaths in a deep, dark lake in south carolina. now susan, who was just denied parole, is speaking out from behind bars for the first time in nearly three decades.

his lapel, surrounded by loved ones, and the attorneys who helped convict the murdering mom. >> but what she did not only to michael and alex. she came pretty close to causing me to end my life because of the grief that she brought upon me. >> three decades ago, a jury opted to give susan life with the chance of parole instead of putting her on death row. >> i look at the case itself as a failure on my part, because unfortunately, she did not get the death penalty. >> the lead prosecutor in the case, tommy pope, telling me he deeply regrets that this parole hearing even happened. why didn't she get the death penalty? >> i think the defense did a tremendous job. they worked the public opinion, they worked the media attention to go from

susan, the monster to susan, the victim. it is not easy. >> i would like to say to whoever has my children that they please. i mean, please bring them home. >> these are the lies 22 year old susan smith was spreading in 1994. >> cain expressed how much they are wanted back home, how much we love them. we miss them standing in front of cameras, telling the nation that she was by a black man while both her baby boys were still in the car. >> for nine days, investigators and countless residents searched for the boys until the horrifying truth. susan smith has been arrested and will be charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of her children. >> i was just scared. >> i didn't know how i could tell the people that loved them

that they would never see them again. i didn't know how i could tell david he couldn't see his suns again. >> david has since remarried and has a new family, some of whom testified about their pain over the loss of michael and alex. >> susan betrayed us and took the lives of those boys, and then lied about it for days. when she did this, she destroyed the trust in me that i've never regained. i now try to use my life as a way to live for them. she took two lives. she didn't just take one. she took two precious little boys. >> during trial, tommy pope showed the jury this recreation of how susan killed her suns. using the same make and model of her car to show how long she had to save her boys. it took six minutes for the car to fill with water. the boys would be pulled from the lake over a week later, still strapped in their seats.

our next story is every parent's worst nightmare. like most teenagers, high school senior abby stepek started to rebel against her parents rules. but when abby disappeared, her family knew that it was more than just teen angst. something was very, very wrong. >> she is bubbly, happy. she loves fiercely. she is a helper. >> no one knew more than lori jernigan about her daughter abb, a fierce independent streak. >> when she started pushing the boundaries, it was i have a car of my own. i should be able to come home when i want. she didn't realize the danger moving out of her mom and step dad's house at 18, abby was testing it all, bouncing between family and friends houses until 1st october night when everything went sideways. abby went to a party

on friday night and had been assaulted, and there was a videotape. >> saturday morning, abby texted a friend i was hanging with some dudes last night and we smoked and i had sex with one of them and he expletive recorded me. dude. like, when i wasn't looking. then she reveals more, telling her mom and stepdad that she was also raped by multiple men and the incident had occurred at that party that she wanted to discuss and discuss with the police. abby's stepdad, michael jernigan, leaves her a message saying he's headed to her grandparents house where she is staying, to help make a plan. when abby doesn't answer, he suspects that she went to retrieve the videotape. >> i called over to her grandparents to ask if she was over there. they stated that she had left, said she was going to meet me. >> the family quickly grows concerned as her older brother trevor frantically tries to reach abby. they finally make contact on sunday, but the

conversation is beyond strange. >> she answered. he said, where are you? she said, i'm out in front of your house. so he hung up and said, cool. and he goes out there and she's not there. so he calls her back. she answers and she says she's messed up. and he said, where are you? and she said, i'm in my car. and he said, where is your car? and she said, i don't know and hung up. and that's the last time anyone talked to her. >> and he also heard abby's actual words. i'm expletive up now. alarm sets in. was abby drugged against her will? was she in imminent danger? where was she? >> he called the police immediately. he said you've got to look for her car. i know something's wrong. something's happened. they listed her as a runaway, and they weren't going to look for her. >> abby's family conducts their own search first checking her social media, knowing how active she was. but their silence.

then, five days after the unnerving phone conversation, they get news that leaves them shaken. shortly after ebby's disappearance, a security guard named guy hooper finds her car abandoned at chalamont park in little rock. it's out of gas. the battery is dead, and the key is in the on position, indicating the car was left running until it died. ebby's possessions were still inside. >> what 18 year old leaves their cell phone or their clothes? her makeup? she spent all of her money on makeup. her contact lens. she can't see without contacts. it was devastating. i can't describe to you how bad that was. that night. finding her car and not her. he might as well tell me. she was. she was dead. it was unimaginable.

police searched the area near the car to no avail. then, when a friend of abby's and her mother, margie, do the same, they smell something foul and call 911. >> number one. this location. emergency. >> i brought my daughter caylee. okay. as i passed the sewer, i could smell decomposition. >> the caller says she waited an hour for park police to arrive, only to be told when they arrived that she was just smelling sewage. reportedly, detectives also spoke with the men abby had accused of rape. no formal searches of their cell phones were done looking for the alleged video. soon, dead ends were everywhere as friends and family felt dismissed by investigators and dismayed in ever finding abby, who police would only call a runaway no matter how hard i tried, i could not get detectives to do anything about it. but lowry

even a leg. her worst fears surfaced. >> here's a shoe. and it was a shoe like she'd had before. >> were these ebby's items and her remains? her family hires a private investigator who begins questioning whether ebby is still alive and possibly being trafficked. >> they picked up his girl, lock her up in her room, feed her with heroin, keep her doped up. they charged gas to have sex with her to the point where she's just a zombie slave. >> monty vickers is one of several pis the family has hired over the years as a former little rock detective. he hopes to get ebby's family and police cooperating on his watch. they do get one piece of good news. >> we were told very fast that it was animal remains and that the clothes had nothing to do with ebby. >> but new cold case

investigators did find some answers. three years after ebby went missing. >> with the cooperation of the little rock field office of the fbi, we decided to conduct a search of the piping and drainage system close to the area where mrs. tippit's car was initially found. >> when they looked in that same drain pipe where her friend's mom said she smelled decomposition days after the disappearance, they found an obstruction. >> so we made the determination that we needed to excavate this area to see what was inside the pipe itself. upon opening that pipe. cold case investigators located human remains inside that pipe. >> it was ebby just 60ft from her car. but did she climb down there? no way. says private investigator catherine townsend. she actually climbed into the pipe where they found ebby's body. for the doctor phil show to demonstrate how absurd the idea is that she would have gone

down there on her own. >> i'm actually going to crawl down in there. >> townsend climbed down the ladder from the manhole that led to the drain pipe, and then attempted to belly crawl into the pipe. >> but if i go any farther, my arms, like i'm not going to be able to get out of here. >> i had always felt in my heart that ebby was dead. >> i just a mother's heart, i don't know, we were so close. and when they found her two and a half years later, it was a whole new wave of emotions. >> in a new interview, lowry tells true crime news that in a strange way, it was a better outcome than the one she had been fearing. >> i felt like she was there the whole time, and she never left. and it made me feel like at least she was safe and even, you know, she was dead, but she was safe. you get comfortable in the not knowing. and then when that happened, that made it final and

real. >> after hearing about a 40 year old case that was solved using new dna technology on a single hair lowry, jernigan asked the little rock police department to take another look at the evidence from ebby's case. >> the cold case unit will continue to work with the steph family to bring a resolve to this matter. >> now, lowry confirms that several items have been sent out for dna testing. hopeful the results may lead to arrests. >> it may help. it may not help at all. and then i go back into being at peace with this that i'm not supposed to know, at least for now. i've lived in that place and i can stay there. >> all she's asking for is justice for ebby and for her killer to pay the price. >> i would ask them why. why they did that and why did it take so long to tell somebody and then i hope they go away for a very long time.
