with a murder so vicious, the details so salacious in nature. it's nearly impossible to believe. the case centers around a picture perfect family. a world famous tv preacher, sex, lies, and of course. videotape. helter skelter. in the heartland. >> this was a monster. >> it's almost as if the manson family broke into the house on the lake, leaving a chilling calling card on the walls in blood red spray paint. >> crime scene inside was horrific. >> and upstairs, a gruesome scene. the bodies of a mother and her two young boys strangled while they were asleep. >> could this be some sick, twisted person that came in and snuffed out this family? >> the distraught husband and father who warned cops about death threats to his family.

violent crime doesn't happen in the quiet suburb of columbia, illinois. tell me about christopher growing up. what was he like? >> mom's joy. i don't know how else to say it. he was just a good boy. >> church has always been at the core of chris's family. his parents, connie and ron, are co-pastors of the grace church in chester, illinois. >> christopher. just a good kid, good student, good, good athlete. i went in the marine corps right after he graduated in the marines. >> chris was a dog handler, and it was at a canine training seminar where he met the love of his life, sherri weiss, an mp in the u.s. air force. so when did the children come along? >> right away. that was the reason they got married. >> oh, there was already a child on the way. >> yes, that would be garrett. his little brother gavin was not far behind. >> what a joy. they were just

preaching the expletive or chris's family will die. i will kill them all as they sleep. it's kind of an odd person to target if you really want to get at her. >> it seemed unusual that the bodyguard would be getting the threat, because the bodyguard is not the person with the name. >> detective sergeant justin barlow lived across the street. chris installed a security camera on barlow's house that pointed directly at the coleman house. and the camera only captured these images of chris playing catch with the kids. 12 hours after this adorable family outing, the boys and their mother would be dead. so when you heard the terrible news, there's not words to say when someone tells you that three people have been murdered, there's no. >> to this day, there's no words. there's no. there's no words. >> it was early morning when a call came into detective barlow.

chris was at the gym and said he couldn't reach sherrie by phone. barlow entered the house on a welfare check. what was the crime scene like on the inside? >> all three were strangled in their beds. they remained in their beds. >> the fact that the killer had spray painted so much of the house and spray painted over the victims and their beds, made it seem like something straight out of the manson family. >> this was a monster. >> miraculously, the main target, chris, had escaped the carnage. >> this person making the threat said exactly what he was going to do. and it happened. >> as the preacher's personal bodyguard, chris had received one e-mail that read, deny your god publicly or else no more opportunities. and the final chilling letter sent before the triple homicide. this is my last warning. your worst nightmare is

about to happen. >> they had so many detectives on this case, and they had a computer forensic expert who was tearing apart his laptop, who found that these letters were generated on his work laptop using his work login. >> you heard right. detectives traced the threatening e-mails to chris's own ip address sent to chris from inside his own home. at what point do police start looking at the husband? >> police start looking at the husband immediately. >> when we come back as police zero in on chris, they want to know if he did kill his family. why? >> coleman looked like a loving family from photographs. but friends gave an entirely different picture. >> and then they make an x-rated discovery. >> where are we? we're in hawaii. sweet daddy.

now back to the horrific murder of sherri coleman and her two suns. strangled to death in their own beds. chris, the father and husband of the victim, says that he wasn't home when they were killed. but that's just one of the parts of

his story that's about to unravel. christopher coleman tells police when he left his house for the gym across the river, everyone was alive and well. surveillance video shows him pulling out of the driveway. the time stamp 5:43 a.m. but there's one huge hole in his story. his family was already dead when he left. famed pathologist doctor michael baden, the former chief medical examiner for new york city, reviewed the autopsy records and concluded the three coleman's were killed before 3 a.m. >> chris says his family is alive when he leaves at 5:45 a.m. yet officers who are touching the bodies say that they're cold and stiff, which means most likely chris is the one who killed them. chris is the only one around. officers envisioned that they would have to restrain this man from going and seeing his dead family. they did not. he did not try to go upstairs. he did not ask how were they killed? somebody

noticed scratches on his arm. he looked at the scratches on his arm and started punching the gurney in the ambulance. the colemans looked like a loving family from photographs, but friends gave an entirely different picture. friends said that they were close to divorce, that sherri was unhappy. >> only later, cyber crime investigators discovered texts sheri had sent to a friend. then cops discover someone named tara naked in my bathroom, getting cleaned up, and a jaw dropping digital x-rated clue in chris coleman's computer. >> where are we? we're in hawaii. sweet daddy being bad. bad. bad. >> and it turns out tara is also sherri's best friend from high school, a waitress in saint petersburg, florida, exchanging naughty selfies and videos with chris. >> so anyway, i just wanted to

say i love you and show me your pictures. say i love my hair today. look at you. you look so hot. >> chris said he was friends while detectives in florida found out that it was an affair with a promise to marry flirtatious. >> chris doesn't know it yet, but the cops know everything about tara, and they also know with 100% certainty, the email threats came from chris's own computer. they're only hours after the bodies were found. detectives bring chris into the interrogation room last night. >> did you guys get any kind of argument or anything? no. it was awesome. she fell asleep in my arms on the couch. >> detectives already know that's a lie. >> okay, but did did anything else happen that you're not telling me? chris, i'm getting the sense that you're not being 100% truthful. >> cops asked chris how sherri seemed on the morning he left for the gym, and she seemed fine when you left. >> i mean, nothing that you

could tell that. no. it's fine. listen, man, she wasn't alive when you left. she was alive. >> and she was. she was laying right beside me. >> the physical evidence doesn't lie. were you involved in her death? >> no. >> then detectives dropped the bombshell. his relationship with tara. >> were you having an affair with anybody? no. but were you actually. doing anything that you felt wouldn't be approved by your wife? some of the conversations praplan he's lying about the affair was so stupid because there were all these videos and pictures of him with her naked. >> what sense does that make? >> does it make any sense? >> i know you guys went to hawaii together. i know that she used your credit card, all right. to sit there and pay her bills last month. >> they know there's no serial killer on the loose. chris coleman is the one who spray painted those manson family style messages on the walls of

the murder house. >> do you have any pain at your house? i don't i don't think so. okay. any spray paint? i if i do, it's old. >> actually, it's not old. cops found this receipt dated three months earlier when chris bought the can of apple red paint. they also found even more corroboration on motive after hauling in tara. >> how long have you been in a relationship with chris? >> since late november. early december. >> what would you tell his wife when he was gone? >> he would have just told that he was working. >> and tara keeps talking. >> did you have any knowledge of these homicides? >> no knowledge. >> police believe that tara had absolutely no involvement in the triple murder. she's only a witness. we're done. >> if you're done, i'm done. >> yeah, but back in illinois, police charged chris coleman in the triple murder. chris claims

he's innocent, and his defense team says the real killer left unknown. footprints, fingerprints and dna at the crime scene. a jury didn't buy it. the judge sentenced coleman to three life terms without parole. but we wanted to hear more from chris. >> hello, this is chris coleman. >> did you kill your wife and your two boys because you wanted a life with your mistress? >> no. absolutely not. i am 100% innocent. >> chris coleman has tried several times to get a new trial. he claimed the jury's decision was based on evidence that they weren't supposed to see. but every time he has tried, a judge has turned down his appeal. up next on true crime news, a devoted mom of two disappears. >> she left her passport, her purse, her cell phone, her children, and her handsome

newborn daughter, everyone fears the worst. >> this is officially a homicide investigation. >> and a desperate search is on to find the mother of two. >> she left her passport, her purse, her cell phone, her car, her clothing, her children. it was very clear that something was very, very, very wrong. >> as police searched the house christine's live in, boyfriend and father of her new baby, robert interval, walks in. he tells cops that she had a flat tire that morning and walked to work, but she never arrived. erin nethery knew robert before he moved in with christine. >> very friendly, outgoing, helpful to a fault. >> and soon christine was pregnant with robert's baby. but not all was rosy. robert had grown increasingly controlling. >> according to friends, robert could go from very happy and joking, and it was like, boom! a

light switch went off and suddenly dark and anger. >> and the day she disappeared, her friends say that she was one step closer to getting away from him. >> she was going to also get a restraining order. she was so close. she was so close to getting out. but she never made it. >> as police continue to investigate, they see that christine's car didn't have a flat tire despite robert's claims, and when they returned to the home the next day, robert answered the door with a loaded gun and the baby cops removed the gun and after seeing his daughter's bedroom, child services removed her from the home. inside a disturbing clue. >> it was very evident that there had been used bleach spray. you know it. it bleaches the paint. >> it was enough for cops to get another search warrant. this time they found what's believed to be physical evidence of foul play inside the couple's home.

>> it's our understanding that there's blood on in both the baby's bedroom and her bedroom. >> though cops found blood and other evidence, they still didn't have a body. that's when hundreds of volunteers joined the mustafa family to search. evidence suggests christine was killed inside her home. cops suspect robert then dumped her body in a nearby landfill. volunteers and authorities spent three months searching through 43 million pounds of trash. but no, christine, we have the area that we believe her to be pretty well identified. and on the one month anniversary of christine's disappearance, cops arrested robert interval and charged him with her murder. to this day, christine's body has not been found. but that didn't stop authorities from prosecuting robert interval. he was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. his appeal was denied
