expected to provide an update shortly on the investigation into the deaths of four family members, all of them found inside an apartment earlier this week. here we see police officials are about to begin this update that discovery made on tuesday, when the relatives of the victims asked police to do a welfare check. and again, this is a news conference just getting underway in milpitas. let's go ahead and listen in here to what they're saying for them. >> i also want to take a moment to thank the santa clara county district attorney's office for their help during this investigation, as well as providing advocacy to the families. i also want to thank the coroner's office for their expeditious work in helping us with this investigation and moving it along. we want to provide some additional updates to our community about the heartbreaking incident as we learn the facts, and the coroner's office provides us with additional details. as we previously mentioned this past tuesday, december 17th at around 9 p.m, our officers responded to a welfare check at the turing apartments after family members

couldn't contact their loved ones for several days. when officers entered the residence, they found vin nguyen and becky pham, as well as their two children, their nine year old son and eight year old daughter. i'm sorry, four year old daughter, all deceased. although the coroner's office is still determining the exact cause of death, all four sustained what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. to honor the request of the victims families. we are not sharing the children's name at this time. we do believe this is an isolated incident. and it's currently being investigated as a murder suicide. based on the information that we have and the evidence that we have at this time. vin nguyen, betty's husband and father of their two children, is believed to be our suspect. a handgun, which is legally registered to vin, was found at the scene. excuse me. this tragedy is a very difficult reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and gun violence. the loss of their

lives was preventable, and for anyone experiencing distress, whether that's domestic violence, gun violence or mental health concerns, help is available. we do urge anyone in need to reach out for support or to contact your local police agencies. if you are fearful of someone who has a gun, there's a variety of different resources, a variety of different restraining orders, domestic violence restraining orders, gun violence, restraining orders that are obtainable. so please reach out to your local authorities if you need help. >> we will share. all right. you are listening. live to milpitas police offering an update on the four family members found shot to death earlier this week inside an apartment in that city. the victims identified and authorities calling this a murder suicide. they say that the man who was found dead took the lives of three other people a woman and two children, a nine year old boy and a four year old girl, all killed here in this

tragic event in milpitas here. but police again calling this an isolated incident and again labeling this a murder suicide situation. >> well, of course, our thoughts and condolences go out to that family and we'll stay on top of this story with more updates throughout the evening. we're moving now to san francisco, where one hotel strike may be over, but another affecting delivery drivers is just getting underway, and that could have a big impact on the holiday shopping season. >> ktvu christien kafton joins us now live from san francisco, where workers at one of the city's hotels have been on strike for weeks now, and they are now voting on a contract. kristen. >> yeah, that's right. you can see that the noisy strike and line that had been going on here outside one of the city's marriott hotels is now over. but while voters while workers from the marriott hotels are voting on a new contract, amazon workers have just walked off the job. amazon workers nationwide and here in san francisco walked off the job and onto the picket

lines. backed by the teamsters union, dozens of workers in one of san francisco's distribution warehouses asked amazon for pay increases, better benefits and to recognize the union. they say they gave amazon a december 15th deadline but were ignored. >> they refuse to do that. they've refused all the other deadlines that we've set for them. so now they've left us with no choice but to strike. >> amazon responded to the strike, saying in part, quote, this is another attempt to push a false narrative. the truth is that the teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated and attempted to coerce amazon employees and third party drivers to join them. the picket line slowed delivery vehicles, but workers say they understand that people around the bay are waiting on holiday gifts. >> it may we hope it doesn't. we hope everybody gets their packages on time. that's up to amazon. you know, if amazon wants to bargain with us, they could end this strike right now. >> as amazon workers walked off the job, workers at the marriott hotels began voting on a new contract offer. workers say it appears to be a good deal with medical benefits and wages,

where they need to be, just in time for the holidays. >> it's a great deal and we were able to gain, you know, our wage increases that were much needed with inflation nowadays. >> while marriott workers may be on their way to a contract, negotiations are still underway for hilton and hyatt workers, with a deal in the works for marriott. union leaders say it's up to hilton and hyatt to come to the table before the holidays. >> it makes it more likely that's for them to decide. but but i think the, you know, the fact that there is now a contract, there is now a standard in this city makes the decision simple for them. >> as we said, those marriott workers actually voting as we speak. we will let you know what the results are of that vote. if, in fact, those marriott workers do ratify that contract, they could be back on the job as early as saturday. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. alex, back

to you. >> yeah, we will be closely following the results of that ratification vote. kristen. thank you. >> well, holiday travel is about to be in full swing, and the tsa is offering some tips to get through security without a snag. airlines advise getting to the airport at least two hours early, with large crowds bringing extended wait times. travelers can play a big role in making sure that those long lines at security don't get bogged down. if you're bringing cookies or other holiday foods. tsa says to store those solid foods in your carry on. leave liquids in checked baggage. gifts should be unwrapped. triple a predicts nearly 8 million travelers will be flying to their destinations this year. >> while the holiday travel rush is on, united airlines flight attendants walked picket lines today at sfo and at other airports across the country. they're gearing up for a possible strike as they negotiate for better pay. the association of flight attendants is calling this a day of action. this follows their overwhelming 99.99% strike authorization vote in august. union members were

cleanup you have on your hands here, especially in golden gate park. how would you describe the damage that this past weekend's storm caused in city parks? >> hi, alex. thanks for having me. i would say that the good news here is that no one was hurt among all these downed trees. and this is really a testament to the fast action of our staff. all weekend long we had arborists out, gardeners, rangers, heavy equipment operators, and they were really focused on ensuring that our parks can bounce back from all this. >> are you still going through golden gate park specifically, and trying to assess how much damage you actually have from downed trees? >> yeah, that's correct. we are still busy clearing roadways, removing fallen branches, limbs, trees, addressing some flooding and damage fencing. so yeah, we still are assessing the damage not only in golden gate park, but other parks as well, like

stern grove and mclaren. >> okay, how long do you think it is going to take to really be able to clear all of the trees that came down from this past weekend's storm? you know, obviously, keeping in mind that we have more storms headed our way, several more storms coming up starting this weekend, right. >> you know, i'm pretty confident that our staff is well prepared for these kinds of impacts. you know, our arborists and gardeners work year round to assess the health of trees. so, you know, whether there is another storm coming. we are well prepared. >> what what do you want? visitors to golden gate park and the other parks in the city to be keeping in mind when it when it comes to the potential for trees to come down? i mean, obviously, you bring up the fact that we're so fortunate that no one was hurt with any of these trees that came down over this past weekend. but what should people be keeping in mind? how cautious should they be if they're heading out to city

parks? >> our advice to people is really to avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather, and also to be careful when walking near trees, especially in parks. and it's also important to note that even healthy trees can fall during these strong wind gusts that we have. >> all right. and what does the work look like to try to assess? you talk about arborists going out and looking at trees. what does that work look like to try to assess which trees may pose the greatest threat in terms of being toppled during during storms. >> i mean, you know, that's hard to tell. it's always hard to predict how much damage a storm can cause. but our arborists are well trained and they know what to look for when it comes to the health of trees. >> all right. any estimates at this point on just how much damage, how much it's going to cost to clean up from, from this past weekend's storm, which obviously was was such an anomaly here where we had this rare tornado warning in the city. >> right? yeah, that was very

keep the government open. a proposal backed by president elect donald trump has failed in the house. democrats refused to accommodate his sudden demands, and the quick fix cobbled together by republican leaders. the vote was 174 to 235, with the bill failing to earn even a majority in the republican controlled house. this vote, coming one day after trump and elon musk appeared to kill a separate bill that did have bipartisan support. house speaker mike johnson appeared determined to try again before friday. friday's midnight deadline, saying, quote, we are going to do the right thing here. ahead of the vote. well, now to georgia in fulton county, where district attorney fani willis has been disqualified from the 2020 election interference case against donald trump and 19 others. an appeals court panel overruled a trial judge who had allowed willis to keep the case, despite revelations of a romantic relationship that the defendants argue created a conflict of

interest. the ruling does not dismiss the indictment entirely, as several of the 19 co-defendants have already accepted plea deals. another prosecutor could take over the case and decide whether to pursue it. the case could be delayed even further if willis appeals today's ruling to the georgia state supreme court. >> california attorney general rob bonta says immigrant communities in this state can count on the state department of justice for legal protections. ag bonta spoke today at an immigrant rights convention that was held in san francisco. this comes as the state legislature is considering a new litigation fund of up to $25 million to defend californians as the trump administration threatens mass deportations. bonta stressed that ice is allowed to pursue those who break immigration laws as long as it carries out its duties lawfully. >> we want to focus our priorities on violations of other state criminal law, like

tackling our fentanyl challenge, like human trafficking, like hate crimes, like organized retail crime. that's the decision that california has made. >> attorney general bonta added that california is home to nearly 11 million immigrants, the most in the u.s, who helped drive the state's economy and workforce. >> well, the calls are getting louder for east bay congresswoman barbara lee to run for mayor of oakland. the group of 25 oakland leaders who represent business, labor, community and government have published an open letter asking lee to run. this letter is titled oakland needs barbara lee, and it highlights the extraordinary times and crisis of leadership oakland is facing following the may mayor recall of shang tao. the letter describes lee as a seasoned, tested, and proven leader who has a track record of delivering for oakland. lee has not yet announced her plans after her term in the house of representatives expires next month. a special election for mayor of oakland is set for april 16th, 2025. >> congress has passed a bill to

a judge from oakland, ryan horvath, has been selected to judge breeds in the hound group when the competition takes place in february of 2025, in new york city. it will mark his first assignment at westminster, and we are pleased to welcome ryan to the four this afternoon. ryan, congratulations on the assignment. first off, we have to know how does one become a judge at the most prestigious dog show in the world? >> well, you have to put in a lot of time in the dog world before you're invited to the show. it's quite an honor to be invited to the show, and it really marks a long time of dedication to the sport. >> okay, so you say you have to have a lot of years. can you

talk about that extensive history and judging. we're also told that your your love of dogs started at a very young age. >> yeah, i started showing dogs when i was an early teenager back in wisconsin. my mom showed dogs sparingly when she was young as well. so she introduced us to this, you know, to the sport. and we went to the local dog shows all while we were growing up. i started actively showing dogs almost 30 years ago, so it's been quite a long time, and that's one of the qualifications to move forward as a judge is to have been in the sport and show dogs for a number of years, as long as as well as having litters of dogs and champions and really showing that you've been active and let people know, i mean, you have a memberships at various clubs throughout the country and here in the bay area. correct. the most active club i'm a member of is a local club, the delaval dog club of livermore. i'm the show chairman for that show, which takes place the third week of october. i'm also a member of several dachshund clubs, which

is my personal breed, as well as some other clubs throughout the country where i actively participate and support them in various ways. the sport relies on volunteer work to make it run efficiently, and it's a great way to stay connected. >> okay, so let's talk about this assignment. you have the hound breeds and varieties that you'll be judging. what are you looking for when judging? is it something specific and has the judging criteria changed over the history of the westminster dog show? >> well, i'm fortunate to be judging my own personal breed dachshunds again, which i've had for over 30 years. i'm also judging basset hounds and beagles in the hound group. and to judge those specific breeds, and any breed for that matter. the national club has put forth guidelines to the american kennel club, who holds all of the standards for which each breed should be judged against. so i'll be, you know, analyzing

the entry that we have for each of those three breeds and deciding which one meets the standard to the best of its abilities. and then those dogs will all go on to the group where the group judge will do the same with each independent breed. throughout each group and pick the winner of that group as well. >> but does it ever come a dog that just stands out to you and you know, okay, this is the one. >> there are many that do. you know, you see them come in the ring and you kind of have your eye on them and you hope that they're going to, you know, give you what you need when you do your hands on examination. and, you know, when that all comes together, their showmanship and their conformation, you know, meeting the standard that they should be, you know, you're very fortunate. and then, you know, you found your winner. >> okay. so if somebody wants to get involved and say, you know what, i have a great dog. i think they do well in this competition world. where do they even start? >> well, the best place to start would be checking out the american kennel club's website. that will give you all the information that you'll need to know. if you know your dog can

proceed, they'll need an akc number. there are competitions for not only conformation, but for performance events as well as well. so purebred dogs and mixed breeds can compete in many of those events. and so akc website, the american kennel club.org would be the best place to get started, to find out all what's available to you and your pet. >> okay. sounds good. you know, i was going through the list of places where all of these judges are coming from, and a lot of them come from the midwest and very few from from california. are you the first from oakland to be chosen for westminster? >> i don't know if i'm the first from oakland. it may be i know a lot of come from california, and i realize the entry at westminster this year, the largest entries from california as well. all making the trek out to new york. but it's a little bit more difficult to, you know, really be actively breeding dogs here in oakland. whereas in the midwest, you tend to have a little bit more land to have your litters of puppies, let them run and play like they

details about what happens next. now that governor newsom has declared a state of emergency because of bird flu. >> california is the first state in the nation to take that emergency step. as ktvu ali rasmus explains, it comes as the cases of the virus have been found in dairy cattle and also people. >> california is one of the nation's largest milk producing states. so far this year, bird flu has infected herds at more than 645 dairy farms. now, governor gavin newsom has declared a state of emergency over the virus. the declaration allows the state to send more resources to farms and counties affected, as well as relax some of the state labor laws about work hours, making it easier to test and treat infected animals and potentially manage the disease in the general population. >> we still don't have a routine

human test, so the test for bird flu have to go to specialized laboratories. i'm actually hopeful. with the state of emergency in california, that california health officials will see the need to develop our own test with state resources. >> up until this week, the bird flu cases in california had only been found in cattle in the central valley. but on december 12th, there was a case discovered in a herd in southern california. the governor's office said, that signaled a wider spread of the virus. >> the dairy outbreak started from wild waterfowl interfacing with with domesticated dairy cows in texas and spread from there. so we are in the thick of it right now. there are 6 million waterfowl in the central valley of california. and there's a lot of birds that are carrying this virus. >> maurice pitesky is a veterinarian and epidemiologist at uc davis. he says there are about 100,000 backyard chickens in california, and their owners could be at risk. he says anyone handling chickens should wear

rubber gloves, boots and take other precautions. >> clothing that is 100% dedicated to your coop. you don't bring that inside. and now i'm encouraging people to also, at the minimum, wear a surgical mask. >> now, just yesterday, a man in louisiana became the first known severe case of bird flu in the u.s. this year, he was hospitalized in critical condition. authorities say he's 65 years old and had some preexisting health conditions, but authorities believe he was exposed after coming into contact with some infected chickens in his backyard flock. ali rasmus ktvu, fox two news. >> final exams were canceled today at san francisco state university because of an anonymous threat that was sent to the campus, and alert went out just before 1230 this afternoon, canceling all classes, exams and activities as the school went into lockdown. everyone on campus was urged to shelter in place as police cleared the area. responding to what they are calling a, quote, anonymous threat of violence. san francisco state did just

post on social media about ten minutes ago that the shelter in place order has now been lifted, and classes and activities on the campus will resume tomorrow. also, novato high school went reports of a robbery near the campus. this lockdown began just after noon. police came in and searched the school with a k-9 and a drone, looking for any suspects who he run onto the campu that search l nearly two hours, and aat point, police declared the school was secure. students were picked up after the lockdown was lifted. >> a rally at the state public utilities commission meeting in san francisco this morning demanded that commissioners reject a proposed rate hike by pg and e, the cpuc is considering a request to recover $723 million in costs to operate the diablo canyon nuclear plant. the facility was set to close next year. pg and e says that keeping it up and running through next year will help meet the state's growing power demands. clean energy advocates say the plant is just too

dangerous as diablo canyon. >> dangerous. it's also all it's really doing is providing continued power for pg and e to make more and more profits. we, as the working class people who are already paying so much for our utilities, shouldn't have to pay for the operation of a power plant that none of us want, and that is actually actively dangerous to our health here in california. >> the groups pointed out that pg and e has already raised rates four times this year. the cpuc has not yet taken a vote on the proposal. >> law enforcement agencies are reminding everyone to celebrate the holiday season responsibly, and warning that officers will be out in force looking for impaired drivers. the national drive sober or get pulled over campaign is now underway through january 1st. law enforcement agencies around the bay area and across the country are stepping up enforcement and holding dui checkpoints. traffic safety figures show dui related crashes are more common in december than in any other month of the year. new at four a federal lawsuit has now been filed against the

state department, accusing it of abandoning palestinian americans in gaza. the sacramento valley, central california office of the council on american islamic relations, or care filed this suit in conjunction with care new jersey and care chicago. they say the state department failed to promptly evacuate americans and palestinian americans from gaza during the israeli bombardment. while it did evacuate americans, including israeli americans, from other conflict zones. the state department has not yet commented on that lawsuit. >> the man accused of killing united health care ceo was flown from pennsylvania to new york today. 26 year old luigi mangione faces charges, including stalking and a murder count that could result in the death penalty. as fox's connor hansen reports, prosecutors are now trying to brand the suspect as a terrorist. >> accused killer luigi mangione returned to new york in dramatic fashion. mangione was walked

cooler around san carlos, sfo, san bruno, also san mateo into redwood shores. now again, it's a series of storms that are stacking up. this is the first system here impacting your friday in the form of some clouds. the second one is right there behind me. and then this third system here between these two possible flooding will be experienced here in the bay area. let's go ahead and track it together with our futurecast. you see the clouds on the increase around santa rosa. we're talking sonoma and napa counties into lake county all the way into mendocino county. your friday will be mostly cloudy with areas of stubborn fog before that system. you can see the line there pushes to the south and digs its way to the east. the rain showers from the secondary system right here. 7:00 in the morning. by lunchtime, 1:00 in the afternoon. we will be rid of this system. maybe a little backwash in the form of some drizzle here and there, but that's it. now, this third system is queued up, ready to push in by sunday night into

your monday. and that is going to start to tip the buckets. as far as precipitation totals are concerned. so high pressure is breaking down. now with the advancement of these systems out of here. but mostly cloudy for your friday. rain arrives for your saturday and then again sunday night. how much rain from the first system here? not much. we're talking about 2/10 in the redding area, about 13/100 in san francisco. it's the second and the third system here that will bring us copious amounts of precipitation, not just in the north bay, but throughout the bay area. so as we take a big look at all of this, this does churn up your surf as well. and it will bring some snow to the greater lake tahoe area. the secondary system that does come in by sunday night into your monday will leave a little bit more of a mark. up to an inch of precipitation in san francisco. but then we still have tuesday to go with lots of rain showers. we won't see the big snowflakes until about tuesday and the high sierra. we have a high surf advisory that's now in place

found guilty today in a mass rape trial. the victim, giselle pellico, has become an international advocate for abuse victims. today, she expressed support for her fellow victims, whose cases do not get as much attention. her ex-husband, 72 year old dominique pellico, received a 20 year sentence, which is the maximum under french law. over the course of nearly a decade, he drugged his then wife, then allowed 50 other men to rape her while she was unconscious. those men all received sentences ranging

i'm heather holmes. we just received that sad update from officials who spoke tonight with heavy hearts. our crime reporter, henry lee live for us tonight in milpitas with the new information. henry. >> yeah. heather, this is a tragic situation that milpitas police indeed believes was a murder suicide involving a married couple and their two children. now, a request for a welfare check led to the grim discovery of four bodies at the touring apartment complex on mccandless drive at about nine tuesday night. milpitas police today identified the dead as 36 year old vin quang nguyen. his wife, chao bao pham, known as becky, who was also 36, their nine year old son and their four year old daughter. the names of the kids were not released. police say wynn used a legally registered handgun to kill his wife and children before turning the gun on himself. each family member died from a single gunshot wound. family members had reported they hadn't spoken to them for several days. police believe the killings happened between saturday night
