impact would not be significant enough in this area, and they wanted to avoid panic. people also talked about not knowing what low lying areas were during the evacuation. emergency management and mueller acknowledged that there was a lot of confusion and panic for people, and that's what they want to avoid when there's another warning. >> many people didn't know where the low lying areas were that they were supposed to leave, and what they saw around them were individuals leaving, which led to panic because they didn't have the information to know that where they were was safe. and so one of the things the county and part of that was caused because the state website crashed. >> now, again, one of the main takeaways from this meeting is that the messaging needed to be better and clearer, so that people can understand what they need to do. now, supervisor mueller says that they plan to work on having better outreach, as well as creating their own county website, which should be up and running by february.

taking a break from college to join us here at ktvu. thank you so much. tell us right now what is happening to the oceans. what's threatening them? >> yeah. so what we see in our oceans is a troubling shift due to rising carbon dioxide emissions, leading to a phenomenon called ocean acidification. so our waters is increasing in acidity, which weakens our coral reefs. and this is not just an environmental problem. it's an economic one. as tourism suffers due to shrinking coral reefs as well as aquaculture is threatened due to reduced marine life. >> okay, so we're really seeing the impact of all of this on the ocean. so. so tell us about your invention and how it addresses the problem. >> yes of course. so for our invention we created keto bio filters to break it up. keto stands for keto morphe, and it's the type of algae that we chemically modified, specifically altering two enzymes. we then engineered bio filters that implement this modified algae into the oceans, featuring a gps infiltration

system with our solution. it's low tech, so meaning it's sustainable, cost effective, and highly scalable compared to the highly intensive, pervasive coral propagation projects that we see today. >> okay, we're looking we're showing the audience now, this algae that you were talking about, how did you even come up with this idea? >> yeah. so a large part of our inspiration came from a trip that we went to australia for in 2017. we witnessed firsthand there the impacts of ocean acidification, specifically in the great barrier reef. but all that started when we were kids. we grew up around animals. we actually had a zoo. growing up, we owned exotic pets ranging from geckos to tortoises to even skinks. >> wow. >> that's amazing. so i understand you started though working on this project when you were sophomores in high school. yeah. now you're 19 at penn state. walk me through the process about getting to this point. >> yeah. >> so we're actually studying at the university of pennsylvania.

scalable specifically to developing countries where we can implement this solution in the ecosystems that really need it. >> okay. >> so what's next? and are you getting people interested in this? >> yeah. >> so as full time college students at upenn, we spent our free time continuing the research and development. but a big part of our time right now is continuing to pitch our ideas to investors, as well as entering in even more competitions so that we're able to secure the funding to continue doing our research, because this does require a lot of work. >> i mean, you have patents here, right? >> yes. yeah. so we got a patent from a competition that we won, and they were able to sponsor us through that process. and even with the ipo education foundation, they provided us with mentors and coaches to go through this process of pitching and working with these investors as well. >> well, it's just a real pleasure to meet both of you young people who are really trying to make the world a better place. i appreciate that. thanks again for coming in and good luck. you have to keep us
