[music] >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning and thank you for joining us. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cook. it's friday december 20th. let's check in with steve paulson for the weather today. and when the rain is moving in. >> i'm thawing out after yesterday. cold temp was very cold. 48 degrees yesterday. amazingly cold. now some locations hit the 60s. it will be that way again today. there's some fog. most of it, though, looks to be east. but if you're on the peninsula or south south bay, there could be some patchy fog, but the bulk of it looks to be east here. 30s and 40s on the temps if you're stuck in that fog. man oh man. but clouds are increasing, so we'll have a mostly cloudy day. then get ready for rain. it's on its way starting saturday and there will be multiple systems taking us in probably the rest of the month.

joins us now live with the details. ali. pam. >> the spread of bird flu among dairy cows in california is what the governor's office says prompted that emergency declaration this week. now, this morning, representatives from the california department of health are expected to give more details about what exactly that emergency declaration means and what they plan to do to help dairy farmers curb the spread of the virus. there are about 645 dairy cow herds in california that have had positive cases of bird flu, one of the highest infection rates among cattle of any state in the u.s. and so far, 34 people in california have tested positive for bird flu this year. all of them were in close contact with either cattle or poultry. >> the dairy outbreak started from wild waterfowl, interfacing with with domesticated dairy cows in texas and spread from there. so we are in the thick of it right now. there are 6 million waterfowl in the central valley of california, and there's a lot of birds that are

carrying this virus. >> maurice pitesky is a veterinarian and epidemiologist at uc davis. he says there is growing concern about the virus making the leap to other types of domestic animals and possibly mutating. just this week, the los angeles health department announced that three domestic cats tested positive for bird flu. two of them died. veterinarians also say people who have backyard chickens could also be at risk of contracting the virus. they should wear rubber gloves, boots and take other precautions, even surgical masks, when they handle their backyard flock. earlier this week, a 65 year old man in louisiana became the first known severe case of bird flu in the u.s. this year, he was hospitalized in critical condition. authorities say they believe he was exposed after coming into contact with some infected chickens in his backyard flock. pam, back to you. >> thank you. ali. well, egg prices here in the u.s. are rising again, thanks in part to the bird flu. industry analysts are blaming the strong demand for eggs during the holidays and

reduced supply due to the bird flu for the higher cost. the manager of one bakery tells us nearly all of the products he sells has eggs, from cakes to pastries and even some of the frosting. he recently found a new egg distributor to try to get some better deals. >> you know, doing, going over the orders and everything and inventory. and then all of a sudden it just seemed very drastic. the changes in pricing and everything. and then, you know, trying to, you know, communicate to the customers, you know, why we were having to raise prices. >> shoppers are feeling it at the grocery store as well. overall, grocery prices increased about a half a percentage point last month, but eggs were up more than 8%, according to federal data. on average, a dozen large eggs cost about $3.65. that's up from $2.14 last year. >> time now 504. there may be a partial government shutdown tonight, after lawmakers in the house rejected the new plan proposed by president elect

donald trump to fund the federal government. the spending package that was voted down by the house would have raised the nation's debt ceiling for the next two years. democrats rejected that part of the bill. they say trump wanted to extend tax cuts for the richest americans. democrats also blamed elon musk, an ally of trump, for killing an earlier bipartisan bill. >> the musk, johnson proposal is not serious. it's laughable. extreme maga republicans are driving us to a government shutdown. >> this keeps the government open. what my friends want to do by voting no is effectively to shut it down. >> now, 38 republicans joined democrats in rejecting this latest bill. many republicans did not want to raise the government's borrowing limit. >> dozens of people packed a town hall meeting in half moon bay to discuss the tsunami warning that was issued earlier this month. now, the warning

from the oregon border to santa cruz county followed a 7.0 earthquake that hit off the coast of humboldt county. san mateo county ordered people living near the coast to move to higher ground immediately. county leaders say that order led to confusion among many people living in low lying areas of half moon bay and pacifica. >> many people didn't know where the low lying areas were that they were supposed to leave, and what they saw around them were individuals leaving, which led to panic because they didn't have the information to know that where they were was safe. and so one of the things the county and part of that was caused because the state website crashed, the tsunami warning was canceled just about an hour after it was issued. >> but county leaders say it highlighted the need to be better prepared. there could soon be tsunami drills in addition to earthquake drills. >> time now 506. the port of oakland is being sued by an environmental group over plans to expand at the oakland airport. the plans include a new terminal and improvements to parking areas and international

arrivals. the lawsuit, filed by communities for a better environment, claims the environmental impact report understates the true impact of the expansion on air quality, noise and traffic. and it calls for a new environmental study. the port of oakland released a statement about this, saying the project will modernize the airport's facilities to meet the region's travel needs. and that, quote, the final environmental impact report, was certified by a unanimous vote by the oakland board of port commissioners on november 21st of this year. the eir is a product of years of careful study, community outreach, and careful deliberation preceding the november vote. >> all right. dense fog for some, but most of it is east. if you're solano county, contra costa county, also around the delta, carquinez strait. some of the bridges. there are some roaring wind over some of the bridges. so just keep that in mind. that goes until 11:00. it

does not include peninsula or south bay, although they are reduced visibility today much more so than yesterday. so we'll keep an eye on that. but a lot of the bases have lifted a little bit. so there's more just pockets of it, but something to watch. again if you if you're in that fog. man oh man. it's just tough to warm up. even the santa clara valley san martin reporting three quarters of a mile visibility. so i think there'll be a little bit more today, but not widespread. look at the east wind. davis point east at 25mph. east in the oakland berkeley hills, east in the city. and the napa airport is just rocking and rolling here east almost to 30mph. so american canyon, probably cordelia hiddenbrooke red top road around there, jamison canyon. if you're like, is that the wind? probably, yeah. 40s on the temps, a few 30s, but a lot of 40s here. and clouds are beginning to make a move. 40s, 30s, 40s and 50s. 53 point reyes, bolinas 51, middletown 37. but cloud cover is beginning

to come in, so i don't think these lows will get that much colder. 19 and 25 for truckee and south lake tahoe. 25 also in reno. high clouds are knocking on the door. come on in. well, they'll get there throughout the morning and into the afternoon. that will be more show than go than the next system is on the way for tomorrow. this will be the first of probably many taking us out to, i think, the new year and nothing new here. most of it again about marin county. san pablo bay north looks to be the line not only tomorrow, but again most of next week. there could be some hefty totals, especially sonoma county north. over the next. i'd say 10 to 14 days with friday on my mind. if you're in the fog, it's cold, clear for some, but cold sun then clouds. there is an east wind anywhere from upper 40s to near 50 to around 6364 icu. >> thank you. time is 509. the suspect in the killing of the ceo of unitedhealthcare, brian thompson, is now in new york. you have the details on his first appearance in federal court.

the ceo of united health care, is facing four new federal charges, including murder. mangione was flown from pennsylvania to new york to make his first appearance in federal court. he was surrounded by dozens of heavily armed law enforcement officers. now, the federal indictment included a new photo of the gun mangione allegedly used in the killing of brian thompson. >> we're going to respectfully decline to make any comment at this time, but mr. mangione appreciates everyone's support. thank you so much. >> now, the murder charge against mangione carries the possibility of the death penalty if he's convicted. federal prosecutors haven't said if they will seek that punishment. well, a man in alameda has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a two year old boy in washington state. that shooting occurred in april at an ihop restaurant parking lot south of seattle. 31 year old jerome lewis was arrested. he

was living in housing for the homeless owned by the city of alameda. investigators say lewis drove the getaway car after the shooting. authorities say the suspected gunman, who was 16 years old at the time, was going after the child's father but shot his son instead. well, san francisco zoo demanding a retraction of a city report that criticized the zoo's conditions. according to the chronicle, the zoo's directors responded to the report at a joint zoo committee hearing yesterday. officials said their zoo is safe when all of the guidelines are followed. they added that all zoos and animal sanctuaries have accidents because of human error. the zoo says donations, attendance and the zoo's image have taken hits since that report came out in october. >> well, detroit has been known as motor city, but california has become the hub for the new motor, the ev. and one company

is bringing vintage and nostalgia to the electric cars. and they are made in the bay. kindred motor works is taking something old and turning it into something new. >> one of the things about these cars, they're these classic cars are beautiful, but they're unreliable. and the result is they're in the garage all the time. you know, they're not driven. >> so he set out to not just restore the car in a traditional sense, but to rebuild and reimagine a better car. >> to do that, you need to modernize it, right? so that's adding disc brakes so that it stops safely adding seatbelts, you know, adding headrests, a great sound system, even simple things like cup holders, things these old cars didn't have when they were new. >> things we take for granted. >> it's a fun part of the job. probably the best job here is design, which is curating. what do we keep and what do we modernize? >> they have an entire design team dedicated to blending

nostalgia with new technology. >> it looks like an analog knob, but really it changes the digital sound of our our stereo or our infotainment center, or where it's our stick shift that once used to control a manual gearbox, now controls just the drive state of our electric motors. i really enjoy being able to give that feedback to the engineers and to the design team. what's working and what's not working. >> he may call it feedback, but it also means he gets to drive around in some pretty cool cars. >> we'll take them on a weekend trip. i'll put the dogs in the back, we'll go to the beach. and, you know, not only do i get to validate the physical or technical components of the vehicle, but you get to validate the way that people look at it. when you're out driving around, going through town, people always come up and ask you, you know, what the vehicle is, and you tell them it's a restoration. but then again, you tell them it's an electric restoration and that really just blows their mind.

>> why electric? >> there's a long history of putting new engines in old cars, and the newest engine is electric. the reality is, it's these actually are lower maintenance. electric cars are lower maintenance. they're more reliable, they're better performing. and oh, by the way, they're sustainable as well. >> production started at the beginning of 2024, building just one car a month. they've expanded to six a month. they have four models the bronco, electric bronco, the electric pickup truck. and soon the vw bus. >> that vehicle just puts a smile on people's faces, no matter if it's an ev conversion or not. >> he says there's a strong connection between the people who love these cars, and it's all in the name. >> kindred is really about a lot of stories, you know? and that word kindred is a it's an underused but positive word, and it harkens back to what we do, which is the modern day version of this older car. it's like a

kindred spirit of those older cars. >> that kindred spirit extends to the customers who can actually come in and help build their car. >> what we offer is the build days with the customer, customer workdays. and you can come in and you can get on to the general assembly line and jump right into the stage of what your car is being built, and actually get in there and turn wrenches and work with the general assembly technicians on that specific part of the build that day. >> the rebuilding and modernizing of these classic cars is not cheap and reflected in the price. just about $200,000. >> the price tag of the vehicle is a little unattainable for most, but when you see the legwork in the development, the design, the engineering, and then you know when you're actually putting the components on the cars, you're testing new items, you're making sure that they work, you're making sure that they're safe. the hours is just countless, countless numbers of hours. and when it's all said and done, i think we're

actually offering a really competitive price and something that isn't even out there. >> it's a lot of effort for every model. we bring in one model, and we spend a couple million dollars tearing it down, building it up, tearing it down until it's perfect. >> do you envision yourself like a tesla factory and really mass producing? >> never. we really could not be more different than that. tesla and the other manufacturers are robots. there's no craftsmanship. this is much more about really working on that car as an individual car with your hands. >> the work and craftsmanship actually started with restoring the vintage building they use on mare island. >> we're just happy to be here and just be part of such a growing company, be part of the bay area culture, and we're here for the long run. >> absolutely gorgeous cars. so fun. and he said one of the things that's down the road is the car that will be very popular in california. it's the wagoneer, also known in surf

all because of that low cloud deck. so everyone's really close. not only is it low clouds, but we'll start to get high clouds as well. so it will be a mostly cloudy day. you know i mentioned maybe it could be a few sprinkles or light showers, but really we're waiting for the system to come in late tonight. tomorrow. and there it is. and without a doubt it favors marin county, san pablo bay north. but everybody should get in on some rain. the key is for next week. i mean, there'll be some late sunday, monday, tuesday, next thursday could be a big system. and again, if santa rosa gets, you know, almost three, that's six in the russian river. so we'll need to keep an eye on things going forward here over the next ten days or so. friday on my mind, if you're in the fog, it's cold. clear for some, but still cold sun. very briefly, then clouds. so mostly cloudy day. mid upper 40s 50s for some, especially eastern solano, contra costa county. if you can get enough sun you get about 6263. but it looks like a wet pattern starts tomorrow for many day. >> all right steve, thank you. time is 521. during the holidays, some people think about changing their weight loss

all, but it is very festive here in the airport. they have a bunch of decorations, you know, outside when you drive up, it's all red and green lights. and then they've got this tree here with a grinch theme. there's a sign next to it that says there's a bunch of trees here at okay. and you can kind of vote on which one you like the best, but they're definitely feeling festive here. they're getting ready to welcome a lot of people coming through the terminals here. so we are expecting a record number of travelers to go at least 50 miles over the holidays. so triple a predicts more than 119 million americans will travel from tomorrow to the first. narrowly beating out 2019 numbers now here at okay. they're projecting 500,000 passengers will pass through the airport between today and january 6th. they say today is actually expected to be the busiest of those days. we're

expecting it to really ramp up here this morning. but again, it is pretty light right now. you know, a bunch of the employees just kind of hanging out right now. there are a handful of delays, cancellations, about three cancellations, some delays, but they're not really anything big. so if you're coming out here, you know, still think ahead. still prepare for long lines. even though you see this on tv and you see that it's not that bad, i would be prepared just in case. live at okay. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thank you, amanda, for keeping an eye on the airports. police in milpitas have confirmed the bodies of four people found tuesday night in an apartment where members of the same family. investigators say it was a murder suicide. police say a 36 year old man shot and killed his wife and two young children, ages nine and four, then shot himself. >> this tragedy is a very difficult reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and gun

violence. the loss of their lives was preventable. >> milpitas police say there were no previous reports of domestic violence involving the family, and they say the motive for the killings is still under investigation. now, we'd like to remind you that there is help available if you or anyone else is dealing with mental health issues that could lead to violence, just dial 988. that is the number for the national mental health hotline and it is available 24 over seven. >> our time now 533. the alameda county district attorney plans to throw out a case against a police officer involved in the death of mario gonzalez in alameda. the da's office told ktvu it will throw out the case against officer eric mckinley, who pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter back in october. a judge has already dropped charges for two other police officers after the district attorney's office failed to charge them in an adequate time frame.

>> president biden heads to italy next month to see the pope in what likely will be his final international trip as commander in chief. pope francis invited president biden during a phone call. the president thanked the pontiff for his ongoing work for human rights and religious freedoms. their meeting next month will include advancing peace efforts worldwide. the trip is set for january 9th to the 12th. >> well, we're now learning more about the people who may be trying to become oakland's next mayor. the city clerk released the names of 11 people interested in running for mayor, and support is already growing. for one familiar face who's not on the list. a group posted a public letter that was signed by 25 community leaders and organizations saying, quote, oakland is a city that's facing a crisis of leadership, and barbara lee is the person they think would best bring people together effectively. now, the current interim mayor, nikki fortunato bass, was also among those who signed that letter. >> this was an effort totally

outside of her. she brought together people that would normally not even sit in the room together. that's what oakland needs right now. we need no more divisiveness. >> now, supervisor lauren taylor has also thrown his hat into the ring. he narrowly lost in the last mayoral election to xiang tao. the oakland city clerk says the last day to file paperwork to get into the race is january 17th. >> hundreds of bay area workers are on picket lines heading into the holidays. amazon. amazon. >> amazon. amazon. >> amazon. workers nationwide, including san francisco, walked off the job and the strike is expected to continue today. distribution warehouse workers are asking for pay raises and better benefits. they say they gave amazon a december 15th deadline but were ignored. amazon accuses the union of coercing and threatening amazon employees to join the strike. >> they refuse to do that. they've refused all the other deadlines that we've set for them. so now they've left us

there to get that latest information for you. >> and there may be a partial government shutdown tonight after lawmakers in the house rejected the new plan proposed by president elect donald trump to fund the federal government. the spending package that was voted down by the house would have raised the nation's debt ceiling for the next two years. democrats rejected that part of the bill, saying trump wanted to extend tax cuts for the richest americans. time is now 544. the federal aviation administration issued a ban on drones over parts of new jersey after a recent increase in drone activities in those areas. and that gives the government the right to use, quote, deadly force against the drones if they pose a threat. the ban will continue at least through january 17th. still not clear where these drones over new jersey are coming from. >> a facility in the south bay that feeds people in need is running into some roadblocks in its expansion. martha's kitchen, located in the alma neighborhood

of san jose, used to serve half a million meals to those in need each year. that number has now jumped to 2.5 million people. the number of volunteers also went from 30 a week to 300. leaders of the organization are now looking to move into a warehouse with double the space. >> because we serve the poor, we need to, you know, we need to remain in central san jose, where the poor can walk to our door and where we're accessible to volunteers from the greater part of the valley. >> the organization requires space for an oversize kitchen equipment, extra venting, and more. but donors don't want to fund the move until a purchase agreement is signed, which requires money up front. it is hoping a business will step up to make a charitable donation by the end of the year, so it can expand. well, the new california law increasing the punishment for certain drug and theft crimes is now on the books. proposition 36 took effect yesterday after voters passed the measure last month. the new

law increases penalties for some drug crimes, including for people who deal fentanyl. the new law has already prompted one police department in orange county to launch an undercover operation targeting shoplifters. >> we pose as a potential buyer and then make sure that we have the right suspect in mind, and then when they make the deal, then if it's possession of stolen property, we'll arrest them for a felony. >> a new law makes shoplifting a felony for people who have been convicted several times. >> our time is now 547. big lot says it plans to close all of its remaining stores as it's going through bankruptcy. the company has already closed more than 400 stores. now it plans going out of business sales at the remaining stores. the company is still trying to find a buyer, but it has already had one sale fall through this year. by the way, there are 21 big lot stores left in california. none here in the bay area.

[applause] amazon. workers at some of the big warehouses across the country, including san francisco, hit the picket lines. the distribution warehouse workers are asking for pay raises and better benefits. employees at hilton and hyatt hotels are also in a labor dispute, but a deal may be reached between marriott and its workers soon. union members are voting on a new contract offer, and they seem to like the wage increase and the medical benefits offered. but starbucks workers are now planning to go on a five day strike in several big u.s. cities, and they say it could spread to hundreds of other stores by christmas eve. they are protesting the lack of progress in contract negotiations this year, the baristas union says the company proposed a deal with no new wage increases now and a 1.5% increase in future years. no stores in the bay area are involved in the strike at this

government's borrowing limit. >> today, california health officials will update the public on what they plan to do about bird flu. it comes just days after the governor declared a state of emergency. ktvu sally rasmus joins us now to talk about why some veterinarians now say people who live far away from farms could still be at risk. allie. >> yeah. pam. the spread of bird flu among dairy cows in california is what the governor's office says prompted that emergency declaration this week. california is one of the nation's largest milk producing states. and now, this morning, representatives from the california department of health will give more details about what that emergency declaration means and what they will be able to do to help dairy farmers curb the spread of the virus. there are about 645 dairy cow herds in california that have had cases of bird flu. 34 people in california have tested positive for the virus this year. all of them had been in close contact with either cattle or poultry. we spoke to a veterinarian and epidemiologist at uc davis. he explained why the bird flu is

affecting cattle at so many dairy farms, and he says it comes from wild birds. >> california has lost 95% of its natural wetlands. so you have all these waterfowl that are using what i call suboptimal habitat, like dairy lagoons, for example, to spend 10 to 14 hours a day roosting there, shedding virus. we can't predict what's going to happen next, but we do know the more virus that's out there, the more potential for the virus to continue to evolve and mutate. >> now, so far, there have been no known cases of person to person spread of bird flu, but there is growing concern that the virus may be changing and could spread more easily. just this week, the los angeles health department announced three domestic cats tested positive for bird flu after drinking raw milk from an infected cow. two of them died. veterinarians also say people who have backyard chickens may be at risk that they should take precautions like wearing rubber gloves, boots, even surgical masks any time they're around their backyard chicken coop. earlier this week, a 65 year old

man in louisiana became the first known severe case of bird flu in the u.s. he was hospitalized in critical condition. authorities believe he was exposed after coming into contact with infected chickens in his backyard flock. dave, back to you. >> okay, ali. thank you. time now, 608. an environmental group is suing the port of oakland over its proposed expansion plans at the oakland airport. the plans include a new terminal and improvements to parking and international arrivals. the lawsuit, filed by communities for a better environment, claims the environmental impact report understates the true impact of expansion on air quality, noise and traffic. and it's calling for a new environmental study. well, the port of oakland issued a statement about this, saying the project will modernize the airport's facilities to meet the needs of the region and its travel. and that, quote, the final environmental impact report was certified by a unanimous vote by the oakland

on two. time now 613. here are some of the stories we are following for you this morning. a convicted murderer who is already serving a life sentence for a homicide in 1989, has been found guilty of two other killings. the bay area news group reports 63 year old david misch has been convicted of killing two young women in 1986. evidence against him included his dna, which was found under the fingernails of one of the victims. misch is still awaiting trial on charges of kidnaping and killing nine year old girl from hayward two years ago. 240 years ago police in milpitas say the deaths of four family members whose bodies were found this week was a murder suicide. >> the four bodies were found tuesday night in an apartment. investigators say a 36 year old man shot and killed his wife and their two small children, ages nine and four, before he killed himself.

carquinez strait, the delta, solano county. i don't make this decision, but i'm going to mention eastern contra costa county. and if you are any of those areas. yesterday it was freezing. the high temperature yesterday in vallejo was 47. the high was 47. cordelia was 48, fairfield 49. livermore was 48. high temp. i mean, so i get even, ali said. she was on the edge of that fog in fremont yesterday. she goes, i was freezing and i'm like, i get it. believe me, there's better visibility today. so. but i mean, there's still plenty of low clouds out there. there's not as much. look at sfo though. three miles visibility, san jose, san carlos down to four. yesterday they had ten. so it's a little bit of haze a little bit of fog. i think santa clara valley as well. san martin says zero visibility. so we have a little bit more today than yesterday. east wind or a breeze. i mean it is roaring out towards the napa airport. it's been up to 33 miles an hour now. it's only 23, but east wind, east wind or a north wind, all that's in play. so mainly 40s.

there's a couple of 30s showing up. but look at that. all 40s now, except for up in middletown. they're 53 point reyes, bolinas, 50 sonoma, napa 42 degrees and occidental. good old oxy there at 42 as well. higher clouds are on the way. so not much sun today. i mean, just a little bit. could be a few little splash and dash sprinkles or showers. but the main system is taking aim at us late tonight. tomorrow, more likely saturday and everything. the line is drawn from about golden gate bridge, san pablo bay north as far as amounts go. well, you can say san francisco, oakland, but san rafael north is going to be. we'll have to keep an eye on some of these totals going forward. there could be some excessive rainfall, especially over the next 7 to 10 days just to, you know, no doubt about it, santa rosa north. so friday on my mind if you're in the fog, it's cold. might be a little better today if the wind turns southerly. brief sun, but then increasing clouds upper 40s 50s to a few at best. 6364 pam.

on two time now. 625 the fda has now changed the requirements that food must meet before using the label healthy on the packaging. now that includes limits on saturated fats and sodium and added sugar. foods labeled healthy must also have a certain amount of fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy. that means white bread, heavily sweetened cereal, and yogurt no longer qualifies. this is the first significant change to food labels in america in 30 years. a gas station in fremont is giving back to the community in the form of free coffee and hot chocolate. for the next four weeks, the valero gas station at fremont boulevard and mowry avenue is offering free drinks to the homeless. and anyone who's in need of a pick me up. all this, even though the family run gas station has repeatedly been the victim of crime, including theft and vandalism.

it's trapping everything. and there's an east breeze or a wind. temperatures. brutal forecast on the highs. the models don't handle the fog well. so 50 to 60. all right. sal is here. >> he's beginning with starting the east bay. steve, we had a couple of things that happened, but they cleared up. and now things are better. for example, on interstate 80, a 24 minute drive from the carquinez bridge to the mac may just a little while ago, it was much higher because of a cthat cra is cleared. bay bridge it's getting a little more crowded, but we still don't have a big crowd at 632. let's get back to the headlines. >> thank you. sal. new. this morning san francisco police say officers shot and killed someone early this morning. police tell us it all started when two people were hit by a car on a sidewalk near union square last night. police say the driver then drove off and hit a cyclist. officers say they found the suspect and they were armed. officers opened fire. the suspect died at the hospital. the pedestrians were sent to the

hospital with non-life threatening injuries. police could not find the cyclist who was hit. we are working to find out more on what happened immediately before the officers fired their weapons. we will continue to update this story throughout the morning. >> all right. pam. time is 632. the holiday travel rush starting all over again. just like during thanksgiving, the year end travel is expected to break records as well. ktvu is amanda quintana is at oakland airport now to show us what it's like there now. amanda good morning. >> good morning. well it's been pretty quiet here. it actually just picked up in the last ten minutes. we're starting to see a line here at tsa, which ten minutes ago there was no line. people could just walk right up, get their ids checked and get through that security line. so, you know, it's starting to pick up. we're starting to see that rush now. and we are expecting a record number of travelers to go at least 50 miles over the

holidays. so triple a is predicting more than 119 million americans will travel from tomorrow to the first. that's narrowly beating out 2019 numbers now here at okay. they're projecting 500,000 passengers will pass through the airport between today and january 6th. they say today is actually expected to be the busiest of those days. we spoke to a family heading off on a southern tour for the end of the year. >> we are flying into new orleans and then driving over to mississippi, then back to new orleans, then over to alabama and then atlanta. i don't usually fly during this time. no. we usually take a trip somewhere every christmas, but we drive. >> now. while the kids in that group were surprised that so many people woke up at four in the morning, they were really shocked by that. the adults said, you know, it's really not that bad. they were looking at the line saying, we're surprised that it is not as bad as we

expected it to be. they got here early. a lot of people, you know, that's just in their minds when you're traveling during the holidays, you're thinking, i got to get there really early. i got to make sure that i'm waiting in line at the perfect time to, you know, sit down, get a coffee, whatever. but it's looking pretty good here. the lines are looking pretty good. and also it's pretty festive here in the airport. you know, they have christmas trees. some of the employees, they have santa hats and little elf socks. so it's pretty cute to see. live at okay. amanda quintana ktvu fox two news. >> thank you amanda. an accused child killer has been convicted of two east bay homicides from nearly 40 years ago. the bay area news group reports. dna evidence led to the conviction of 63 year old david misch for killing two women in fremont back in 1986. prosecutors say the two victims were killed when they fought back during an attempted sexual assault in the fremont hills. misch is still awaiting trial on charges of

kidnaping and killing nine year old mikaela garrett from hayward. police in milpitas have now confirmed the bodies of four people found tuesday night in an apartment were members of the same family. investigators say it was a murder suicide. police say a 36 year old man shot and killed his wife and two young children, ages nine and four, then shot himself. >> tragedy is a very difficult reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and gun violence. the loss of their lives was preventable. >> milpitas police say there were no previous reports of domestic violence involving the family, and they say the motive for the killings is still under investigation. now, if you or anyone you know are experiencing domestic violence issues, that is there is help available. we have that number on the screen for a free around the clock hotline for you to call. >> our time now 636. the alameda county district attorney intends to throw out a case against a

police officer involved in the death of mario gonzalez in alameda. the da's office told ktvu it will throw out the case against officer eric mckinley, who pleaded not guilty in october to charges of involuntary manslaughter. a judge already dropped charges for two other police officers after the district attorney's office failed to charge them in the proper time frame. >> the berryessa union school district has decided which three elementary schools will close next year, as the district faces a budget deficit. they are toyon, cherrywood and lane view. the san jose spotlight reports the vote was 4 to 1 in favor of the closures. families have been rallying against shutting down those schools, but the district reports a sharp decline in enrollment the last ten years means less state funding. the district says it hopes to save $2.5 million a year. with those school closures. well, today is the last day of commencement

one. all right. we'll get to it. sal is right. there is a little bit more fog, although nothing severe or critical. but yesterday was all clear in san jose and the peninsula was clear today. sfo, three miles visibility san carlos four, san jose five. so not bad, but a little different than yesterday. and thankfully, hopefully the fog bases are lifting. but there's still a fog advisory. parts of solano county and carquinez strait out to the delta. i can't say that for san martin, the santa clara valley, some fog down there, a few pockets of it. so we're not done with it yet. just incredible. east breeze or wind. there's been some gusts about 30mph at the napa airport now. looks like it's coming down a little bit, but due east at fairfield, concord, oakland. and if you're anywhere near those locations the last couple of days, you're like, well, global cooling. my gosh, it's cold. and it was. mountain view and hayward have something in common. they're both 39, a lot of 40s on the temps. i just think there's too much in the way of fog. east wind. same for the east bay temps. i mean north dublin 41. after that though, this is about as close as i've seen all these.

convicted. federal prosecutors haven't said if they plan to seek that punishment. >> president biden heads to italy next month to see the pope in what likely will be his final international trip as commander in chief. pope francis invited president biden during a phone call between the two men recently. the president thanked the pontiff for his ongoing work for human rights and religious freedoms. their meeting next month will include advancing peace efforts worldwide. the trip is set for january 9th to the 12th. >> well, we're now learning a lot more about the people who may want to become the next mayor of the city of oakland. the city clerk released the names of 11 people interested in running for mayor. support is already growing for one familiar face. not on the list. a group posted a public letter. it was signed by 25 community leaders and organizations, saying oakland is a city that is facing a crisis of leadership, and barbara lee is the person they think would best bring people

together effectively. now, the current interim mayor, nikki fortunato bass, was also among those who signed that letter. >> that effort totally outside of her. she brought together people that would normally not even sit in the room together. that's what oakland needs right now. we need no more divisiveness. >> now, lauren taylor has also thrown his name into that ring. he narrowly lost in the last mayoral election to shang tao. the oakland city clerk says the last day to file paperwork to get into the race is january 17th. the beloved rose parade in southern california is one of the best ways to ring in a new year. it will span a five and a half mile route in pasadena. it's beautiful, and it features floats covered in flowers, horses, and marching bands, and a lot more. honoring the traditions dating back to 1890. the floats also honored the people who make their community special and the loved ones they've lost. the one legacy

carquinez strait, and also out toward. i'm going to i'm going to mention eastern contra costa county just because it's been so brutal. and if you were anywhere north and east yesterday, high temps sometimes did not get out of the upper 40s. it was that cold. tracy's having a little bit of a fog, but after that i mean a little bit more. sfo, san carlos compared to yesterday, but still nothing critical seeing three, four, five miles. so we'll take that. although san martin, santa clara valley is down to a quarter. so there are some pockets where there's still some reduced visibility and east breeze. some of the gusts have been up to about 2530. the napa airport has gone way down. there were 33 miles an hour out of the east at about, i think 4:00 or 5:00. it's still an east or north wind, including petaluma, north to 13. so that's a cold breeze if you're stuck in that cloud cover and that breeze a few 30s. mountain view, hayward a lot of 40s here, mostly 40s, although look at pillar point, half moon bay or 5350 woodside, atherton, 39, palo alto, los altos, 39. and a lot just
