truck responding. alameda fire says a single propeller airplane had to make an emergency landing around 1030 this morning at the abandoned naval base runway. the pilot reported engine issues and the pilot landed safely. there was one other person on board. no injuries reported. an investigation is underway across the bay. now, a san francisco police shot and killed a man suspected of a hit and run that injured three people. it began yesterday evening around 630 near post and grant, and ended with a shooting right in front of the dior store at that intersection. our allie rasmus recounts what police and people who live and work nearby had to say about the incident. >> we're on grant and post and behind us is the dior store. you can see several bullet holes in the windows as crews work to repair that storefront. this morning around 130. this is where san francisco police say officers shot and killed a man who they believe was involved in a hit and run collision. according to police, around 630 yesterday evening, they got a report about someone driving

recklessly onto the sidewalk near post and kearny. two people struck had non life threatening injuries. there was a cyclist also hit and police don't know the extent of that cyclist's injuries and have not been able to locate him to find out. but by 130 this morning, police say they used security video and other evidence to track down the suspect. they said they found him here working, possibly as a security guard outside the dior store. >> we are still trying to sort it out. we haven't confirmed it. we believe that he was a security guard, and we don't know for sure if he was hired by dior or not. >> police say they made a plan to arrest the man, but there was some sort of confrontation, and police ended up firing their weapons and killing him. >> we're still sorting out exactly what the suspect had and what the suspect did. upon my arrival this morning, there was a firearm on the ground at the scene that belonged. we believe that, i believe belong to the suspect. it's terrible. >> it's terrible. every time

getting on a plane. >> i'm excited for airport food. >> i'll never understand that one. >> a record number of travelers are expected to make a trip of at least 50 miles for the holidays. triple a predicts more than 119 million americans will travel from tomorrow to the first. narrowly beating out 2019 numbers. but passengers we spoke to don't mind how busy it is. >> i don't have a problem with it. i you know, i know there's going to be people it's going to get there's traffic. everyone's in a hurry. but i just take my time and just enjoy it. >> there are light displays, multiple christmas trees and even popcorn and a free gift wrapping station. once you get through security that is staffed by o k airport staff and they will fully wrap your presents for you. >> of course, tsa recommends not flying with wrapped packages just for security reasons in case they're searched. so this is a really a great opportunity so that you can still arrive at your destination with wrapped presents. >> those things make a difference for passengers like

bird flu. the health agencies will stress the risk to the general public remains low. there have been no human to human transmissions so far this year. 34 people in the state have tested positive. all were in close contact with either cattle or poultry. experts say the virus moves very quickly between dairies. >> since the initial introduction into california in august, we've established quarantines at 679 dairies. most of those are in the central valley, which is kind of our agricultural rich part of the state. but we have just recently detected a few infected dairies in southern california as well. >> according to the cdc, more than 60 people in eight states have been infected with bird flu. one person in louisiana is hospitalized with the nation's first known severe case. hundreds of bay area workers continue to walk the picket lines heading into the holidays. amazon. amazon. amazon. workers nationwide and in san francisco

walked off the job yesterday. the strike is expected to continue today. distribution warehouse workers are asking for pay increases and better benefits. they say they gave amazon a december 15th deadline and were ignored. amazon accused the teamsters union of coercing and threatening amazon employees to join the strike. >> i refuse to do that. they've refused all the other deadlines that we've set for them. so now they've left us with no choice but to strike. >> across town, workers at the marriott hotels began voting on a new contract offer. workers say it appears to be a good deal after examining the wages and medical benefits. hilton and hyatt workers continue to picket the alameda county firefighters annual holiday. toy drive is underway in san leandro. firefighters partnered with local businesses and organizations for the 15th year of this event. they've so far collected thousands of toys to give to children this holiday season. the alameda county fire chief tells us the firefighters who organized the toy drive have been laser focused on making sure they can give as many gifts as possible to the children,

here momentarily, giving you a live look at the golden gate bridge. started out with some fog out there this morning and today is a spare the air quality across the region at this time is moderate, so that's definitely something the rain is going to help us out with. going to improve our air quality as we do move forward. meanwhile, our visibility a much better than earlier this morning. most areas reporting at least two miles visibility and better. the winds are generally light. half moon bay reporting a breeze at about 12mph, coming in from the northwest north northeast in many spots and calm for many as well. into the hills we go. it's a little breezier here. oakland north and south reporting 15 to 25 mile per hour winds and areas to the north. mount saint helena reporting 16mph. getting into the temperatures. with the mostly cloudy skies in store for today, many are a little bit cooler, down by even nine degrees over san jose, down by five. half moon bay. santa rosa you're actually a few degrees warmer, although still cool.

take a look at the numbers right now. 50 degrees in santa rosa, 54 in san francisco, upper 40s to low 50s in and around walnut creek. so expect a cool day with mostly cloudy skies and mainly dry conditions. storm tracker two here a bit of a southerly flow beginning to set up, and we will see a breezy at times. in addition to the wet weather for the weekend, this is going to be the first in a number of rounds coming our way. between now and christmas eve. we'll take you through at least the weekend here. when it comes to rainfall amounts. by tomorrow night, we're looking at anywhere from a few 107 inch for areas of the south bay to almost half an inch for the north bay. now we'll push forward into midnight sunday night into monday and notice more accumulation there, with the north bay receiving up to about an inch or so. san francisco could have about half an inch with less for the inner east bay as well as the south bay. now, when it comes to the timing, we're mostly cloudy and dry today. by tomorrow morning

christmas, but it's looking increasingly unlikely, with fighting picking up once again in the gaza strip. fox's alex hogan has more from london. >> israeli forces are still taking the fight to hamas in gaza, and u.s. and arab mediators work around the clock to hammer out a ceasefire that would include the return of the remaining hostages. earlier this week, president biden sounded optimistic that a deal was imminent, but sources close to the talks say negotiators are stuck on several key points, including the fate of postwar gaza. >> gaza has to be translated into something different that ensures that hamas is not in any way in charge, that israel doesn't have to be, and that there's something coherent that follows. >> the talks are also complicated by a renewed israeli offensive in gaza. the idf says it's helping put israel in a stronger bargaining position, and it will keep the fight until a deal is made. >> we are exerting pressure on hamas daily, driving it into greater distress to ensure the

officers. the federal indictment revealed a new photo of the gun. police say mangione used to kill brian thompson. >> we're going to respectfully decline to make any comment at this time. but mr. mangione appreciates everyone's support. thank you so much. >> if found guilty of murder, mangione could face the death penalty. federal prosecutors have not said if they plan to seek that punishment. police in milpitas have now confirmed the four people who were found dead tuesday night in an apartment were all members of the same family. investigators say it was a murder suicide. police say a 36 year old man shot and killed his wife and two young children, ages nine and four, then shot himself. >> tragedy is a very difficult reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and gun violence. the loss of their lives was preventable. >> milpitas police say there were no previous reports of domestic violence involving the family, and say they're still looking for a motive. domestic violence organizations stand ready to help anyone who is

experiencing or concerned about the possibility of domestic violence. the national domestic violence hotline is on your screen now. it's free, confidential and available 24 hours a day. the alameda county da has thrown out a case against a police officer involved in the death of mario gonzalez in alameda. the district attorney's office tells ktvu it will throw out the case against officer eric mckinley, who pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in october. a judge has already dropped charges for two other officers after the da's office failed to charge them in an adequate time frame. tesla, recalling almost 700,000 vehicles due to a tire pressure monitoring system issue. the problem was with the monitoring systems warning light. tesla says it may not remain illuminated and fail to warn the driver about low tire pressure. driving with improperly inflated tires, of course, can increase in the risk of a crash. according to the national highway traffic safety administration, the recall includes the 2024 cybertruck,

people flocking to airports here in the bay and all across the country as they head to their holiday destinations. tsa is warning people to build in extra time today and through the weekend for your travel. there have already been some problems elsewhere. earlier, a ground stop was issued in chicago due to ice and snow. the tsa expects to screen more than 40 million people over the next week or so. that would be about a 6% increase from last year. already today, there have been long lines at bay area airports and today is busy. of course, next friday also expected to be busy as well. travel experts say we are still in a post pandemic travel bump. people are making it happen and i think it has to do a lot with, i think, sort of a psychological shift in in the view of travel. post pandemic, i

think people value it a lot more than they did before. and i think the numbers tell us that because we're surpassing those pre-pandemic numbers, numbers which were already very high to begin with. expect a lot of company on the roads as well. triple a expects nearly 120 million people to travel this coming week. 90% will be driving. so if you're heading out of the bay this weekend, do plan for some delays. the port of oakland is being sued by an environmental group over plans to expand at the oakland airport. the proposals include a new terminal, some improvements to the parking areas, and international arrivals. the lawsuit, filed by communities for a better environment, claims the environmental impact report understates the true impacts of the expansion on air quality, noise and traffic. it calls for a new environmental study. now, port of oakland issued a statement saying the project would modernize the airport's facilities and meet the region's travel needs, adding the final environmental impact report was certified by a unanimous vote by the oakland board of port commissioners on november 21st of this year. the eir is a product of years of careful

study, community outreach, and careful deliberation preceding the november vote. new at noon an east bay family is considering filing a lawsuit after being injured in a tour boat accident in the florida everglades. they were visiting naples, florida, last week, along with a group of children and parents from an east bay youth football team. they were injured when two airboats giving tours collided. the family held a news briefing this morning with their attorneys. david tolson, of antioch, was seriously injured along with his wife and children. >> i am in a great deal of pain working through a lot of the nuances that come with an accident like this. obviously, not only was i injured, my wife was severely injured as well. my children sustained injuries, so i am working through it slowly but surely. >> the cause of the boat crash is under investigation. people attended a town hall in half moon bay focused on a recent tsunami warning following the major earthquake in northern

california. community members. in san mateo county, first responders discussed the decisions made on that day. ktvu lamonica peters has the story. >> but the one thing i wanted to let you know up front. >> san mateo county supervisor ray mueller from district three led the discussion about the tsunami warning, along with other stakeholders, including emergency management and first responders. residents asked questions and voiced their frustrations. >> we had the sheriff come through our neighborhood, which is outside the tsunami zone, and told people to evacuate, and that created a great deal of confusion because we all thought we were okay. >> emergency management first talked about why there was a tsunami warning, explaining that there had been a 7.0 earthquake. they then explained why the sirens didn't go off. the director of san mateo county emergency management said it was a collective decision made by multiple counties and agencies to not sound the sirens, because the impact would not be significant enough in the area. people also talked about not

knowing which low lying areas should be evacuated. >> many people didn't know where the low lying areas were that they were supposed to leave, and what they saw around them were individuals leaving, which led to panic because they didn't have the information to know that where they were was safe. and so one of the things the county and part of that was caused because the state website crashed. >> mueller also said the county plans to improve outreach through text messaging, signage and evacuation maps, and updating the county's website with tsunami preparedness by february. emergency management said they're learning from community feedback and have already begun implementing ways to improve. >> i think we've done 3 or 4 assemblies already, so we are. we are working with the school districts to make sure they shore up their plans. and then there's also an education campaign from the schools to the parents as well. >> now, again, one of the main takeaways from this meeting was that messaging needed to be better and clearer. they also mentioned that tsunami drills

may become just as important as earthquake drills to be prepared. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news martha's kitchen in the south bay serves more than 2 million meals a year, but it says all the success has created a problem. >> the kitchen is now too large for its current location, and officials say they want to move it to a larger space. our jesse gary shows us what stands in the way. >> trying to move a nonprofit is not easy. >> this herculean task lies at the feet of executive director bill lee. he says martha's kitchen, located in the almond neighborhood of san jose, once served half a million meals to the hungry each year. it now serves 2.5 million a year, highlighted by thanksgiving and christmas dinners. the number of volunteers has also swelled from 30 a week to 300. >> we have grown to a point that we don't fit the facility that we're in anymore. >> lee says he's looking to spend $10 million or more on a warehouse site, up to double the current 10,000ft!s he's renting from sacred heart of jesus

church. the target area is in south central san jose, north of curtner avenue, east of san jose state, and west to highway 87. realtors say it's challenging given the lack of inventory and financing requirements. >> there's very few of them out there, and this is a very specialized need that, that, that they're looking for. and so you've got to find the right opportunities that fit that need. >> those needs include space for oversize kitchen equipment and extra venting and electrical. lee says martha's kitchen must remain accessible to those in need. >> because we serve the poor. we need to, you know, we need to remain in central san jose, where the poor can walk to our door and where we're accessible to volunteers from the greater part of the valley. >> there's a catch 22. the kitchen needs money to buy a building, but donors aren't likely to fork over cash until a purchase agreement is signed, which requires money first, experts say. in this season of

congressmember barbara lee would be the best person to bring the city together. current interim mayor nikki fortunato bass is among those who signed the letter. >> it was an effort totally outside of her. she brought together people that would normally not even sit in the room together. that's what oakland needs right now. we need no more divisiveness. >> former city council member lauren taylor has also thrown his hat into the ring. he narrowly lost in the last mayoral election to shengtao. the oakland city clerk says the last day to file paperwork to run is january 17th. another bay area school district is facing a massive budget deficit and considering some big cuts, the san ramon valley unified board of education met this week for its annual organizational meeting. the superintendent said the district has to cut more than $30 million. at a meeting last night, board members discussed the proposed spending cuts and opened the floor to questions, comments and concerns. >> please consider looking at some of the alternative funding sources for counseling services for students. there are funding sources that this district is not utilizing, that other

districts have begun using. >> like many districts, san ramon valley unified is struggling due in large part to declining enrollment. about $4.5 million in cuts have been proposed for programs throughout the district. it's more than 15% of the overall reductions in the proposed plan. there could be millions of dollars in cuts to staff. plans for a housing project in oakland, at the former site of the california college of the arts, are moving forward. the historic campus dates back to 1922, has been mostly vacant since the school moved fully to san francisco two years ago. now, the city council has signed off on a plan to build a 448 unit housing development that's also expected to have retail as well. but it could be a while before it gets built. the developer says they're waiting for better economic conditions before starting the project. the u.s. census bureau says california's population has increased slightly. our state's population went up by about 232,000 people from 2023 to 24. it's a turnaround from the drop we've seen over the past few years.

the overall population, though, is still down from pre-pandemic numbers. nationally, the population grew by 1%, surpassing 340 million. much of that credited to an increase in international migration. san francisco zoo demanding a retraction of a city report critical of the zoo's conditions. according to the chronicle, the zoo's directors responded yesterday to the report at a hearing of the joint zoo committee. officials said the zoo is safe when all guidelines are followed. also said all zoos and animal sanctuaries have accidents because of human error. zoo officials say donations, attendance and the zoo's image have suffered since the report was issued in october. coming up, big lots plans to close all of its remaining stores as it goes through bankruptcy. the company has already closed more than 400 stores. now, big lots is planning on going out of business sales at the remaining stores. the company is still trying to find a buyer, but has already had one sale fall through this year. there are 21 big lot stores left in our state, none in the bay area.

is steering the future of electric vehicles. our pam cook shows us some evs that are made in the bay by blending vintage style with cutting edge technology. >> kindred motorworks is taking something old and turning it into something new. >> one of the things about these cars, they're these classic cars are beautiful, but they're unreliable. and the result is they're in the garage all the time. you know, they're not driven. >> so he set out to not just restore the car in a traditional sense, but to rebuild and reimagine a better car. >> to do that, you need to modernize it, right? so that's adding disc brakes so that it stops safely adding seatbelts, you know, adding headrests, a great sound system, even simple things like cup holders, things these old cars didn't have when they were new. >> things we take for granted. >> it's a fun part of the job.

probably the best job here is design, which is curating. what do we keep and what do we modernize? >> they have an entire design team dedicated to blending nostalgia with new technology. >> it looks like an analog knob, but really it changes the digital sound of our our stereo or our infotainment center, or where it's our stick shift that once used to control a manual gearbox, now controls just the drive state of our electric motors. i really enjoy being able to give that feedback to the engineers and to the design team. what's working and what's not working. >> he may call it feedback, but it also means he gets to drive around in some pretty cool cars. >> we'll take them on a weekend trip. i'll put the dogs in the back, we'll go to the beach. and, you know, not only do i get to validate the physical or technical components of the vehicle, but you get to validate the way that people look at it when you're out driving around, going through town, people always come up and ask you, you know, what the vehicle is, and

you tell them it's a restoration. but then again, you tell them it's an electric restoration and that really just blows their mind. >> why electric? >> there's a long history of putting new engines in old cars, and the newest engine is electric. the reality is it's these actually are lower maintenance. electric cars are lower maintenance. they're more reliable, they're better performing. and oh, by the way, they're sustainable as well. >> production started at the beginning of 2024, building just one car a month. they've expanded to six a month. they have four models the bronco, electric bronco, the electric pickup truck, and soon the vw bus. >> that vehicle just puts a smile on people's faces, no matter if it's an ev conversion or not. >> he says there's a strong connection between the people who love these cars, and it's all in the name. >> kindred is really about a lot of stories, you know? and that

word kindred is a it's an underused but positive word. and it harkens back to what we do, which is the modern day version of this older car. it's like a kindred spirit of those older cars. >> that kindred spirit extends to the customers who can actually come in and help build their car. >> what we offer is the build days with the customer, customer workdays, and you can come in and you can get on to the general assembly line and jump right into the stage of what your car is being built, and actually get in there and turn wrenches and work with the general assembly technicians on that specific part of the build that day. >> the rebuilding and modernizing of these classic cars is not cheap and reflected in the price. just about $200,000. >> the price tag of the vehicle is a little unattainable for most, but when you see the legwork in the development, the design, the engineering, and then you know when you're actually putting the components on the cars, you're testing new

items, you're making sure that they work, you're making sure that they're safe, the hours, it's just countless, countless numbers of hours. and when it's all said and done, i think we're actually offering a really competitive price and something that isn't even out there. >> it's a lot of effort for every model. we bring in one model, and we spend a couple million dollars tearing it down, building it up, tearing it down until it's perfect. >> do you envision yourself like a tesla factory and really mass producing? >> never. we really could not be more different than that. tesla and the other manufacturers are robots. there's no craftsmanship. this is much more about really working on that car as an individual car with your hands. >> the work and craftsmanship actually started with restoring the vintage building they use on mare island. >> we're just happy to be here and just be part of such a growing company, be part of the bay area culture, and we're here for the long run. >> pam cook, ktvu, fox two news it'd be a shame to get those

vehicles wet with raindrops. >> i mean, those are museum pieces, but still. boy, what a trip across the golden gate that would be in that vintage bus. let's get outside this weather. gray skies, preparing for rain. rosemary oroczo. this is not the final weekend before christmas kind of weather we were hoping for. >> yes, garcia, it would be nice to have one more dry weekend so we could all take care of everything we need to do before the big holiday. i'm going to say pack the umbrella. we have rounds of showers and rain coming between saturday and sunday, with another one expected on christmas eve. how about outside our doors right now? well, if you do have a place to be, we are dealing with cloudy, cool conditions and it is a spare the air day with air quality moderate at this hour, but really it's going to be tomorrow morning and moving forward when we see the wet weather. here is a view of what is going on outside right now. a lot of gray sky and the first already approaching. you can see areas of washington, oregon, northern california. we have a parade of storms that we are expecting over the next few

days, and the futurecast model will show you tomorrow morning. we are looking at scattered showers and wet weather arriving early on. it will be hit or miss. scattered showers for most of the day. sunday looks mostly cloudy, could be mainly dry, but you know, as long as those clouds are hanging overhead, we have to call for at least scattered showers. so for sunday we're looking at off and on rain. with the bulk of the system right now arriving sunday afternoon. monday right now looks like it could be mainly dry before the wetter storm arrives on christmas eve. snow levels are expected to remain high throughout the weekend, but come christmas eve, those snow levels are expected to drop and could definitely impact the passes i-80 as well as highway 50. we're now into christmas day and christmas day. at the moment, looks like it is going to be dry when it comes to the accumulation through the weekend. anywhere from an inch or less expected for the north

bay, so we can handle that, right? take a look at the sierra though. high elevation snow. we're talking seven 8000ft. the rest is going to be rain. not good news for our skiers that are planning on going up this weekend. and then as we get into tuesday night, the third storm is moving through, and we could definitely see more in the way of that possibility of flooding and standing water, as we could see anywhere from 2 to 3in for our north bay and snow expected at the sierra, with the snow levels dropping around a foot or so. no advisory for travel over the sierra for the weekend, but there is a wind advisory that begins tomorrow morning with wind gusts expected to 50mph or so on the lake. and we have a high surf advisory that will start tomorrow morning as well and go through most of the weekend. so something to consider if you're going to be out closer to the water for the weekend. meanwhile, our temperatures this hour a bit cool, upper 40s to upper 50s. and for the second part of the day, not much change. we're going to remain with the cool weather. seasonal though. i

people back in the day did, so that was the biggest challenge. >> it takes a little to get used to. it's very, very manual. so it's not it's you can tell that you are in something historic. >> only one of the eight historic trolleys is running the holiday route. the hope is to get more of them back up and running next holiday season. well, challenging year for california winemakers is wrapping up. over the past year, growers have seen sales decline. earlier this year, some lodi grape growers were removing vineyards in response to a surplus of wine grapes and little to no sales. some growers will leave the fruit on the vine instead of harvesting it when sales are low. >> when we speak to the challenges this year, we didn't sell all of our syrah, so. so this year we have to do a term called drop fruit where we'll we'll cut it off the vine because it's not sold. >> california's wine industry supports more than 420,000 jobs in the state. slow sales could eventually lead to jeopardizing those jobs. wineries in lodi, though, are hopeful for a comeback. they urge people to visit during the winter and the holiday season if you want to enjoy quieter, less packed time
