francisco police shoot and kill a hit and run suspect. we'll break down what we're learning about that chaotic scene that unfolded before the gunfire. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> hi, everyone, and happy friday. i'm frank mallicoat. police shot and killed an armed man in union square overnight, hours after he allegedly drove onto a sidewalk and hit two teenage girls while chasing someone. ktvu crime reporter henry lee explains the man who was killed is believed to be a security guard. >> bullet holes and a shattered glass storefront in an unlikely spot. the dior store in san francisco's union square. authorities say this is where police shot and killed a man at about 130 friday morning. the same man they say had hit two pedestrians and a bicyclist hours earlier during a chaotic chase on a sidewalk nearby. that suspect, who was killed by police, has a connection to dior. >> we believe he was employed as a security guard in front of the

dior store at grant and post. >> police say it all began at about 630 thursday night, when the guard began chasing a man on an e-bike while driving recklessly and erratically on the sidewalk on kearny, between post and sutter. the reason for the chase is unclear, but it continued near the chipotle restaurant while doing so. >> there were two young women that were coming out of chipotle. one aged 18, the other age 17. struck by the vehicle. thankfully, they have minor injuries, but even after hitting the teenagers, police say the guard continued his pursuit, hitting the back of the e-bike near sutter and kearny. >> the bicyclist jumped off and disappeared. police used surveillance footage to id the dior guard as the hit and run suspect, and were planning to arrest him at the store. but there was a confrontation in the middle of the night, and the guard was shot and killed by police. authorities say they recovered a gun belonging to the guard. the police activity was unnerving to many in union square. >> it is a little scary. i feel like the holiday season always brings out a little bit of

riffraff, but it's been a little bit chaotic. >> dior has been on edge after at least two crashing grabs, with burglars twice ramming cars into the store to steal handbags, including in october. but ktvu legal analyst michael cardoza says the guard's actions endanger the public. >> i mean, getting in a car, chasing and then driving on a sidewalk, my lord, what was he thinking? he probably wasn't thinking because the adrenaline was going. >> san francisco police plan to hold an online town hall within the next ten days to release videos of the incident, and more details as to what exactly led up to this deadly confrontation in san francisco. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> the alameda county district attorney has thrown out a case against another police officer involved in the death of mario gonzalez in alameda. the da's office tells ktvu it will throw out the case against officer eric mckinley, who pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary

manslaughter back in october. the judge has already dropped charges for two other officers after the da's office failed to charge them in an adequate time frame, and for most, today was their final day of work as americans hit the highways and the skyways for christmas week. a live look at san francisco international airport, where it's been busy all day. amanda quintana shows us how the holiday travel rush got started in oakland. >> okay is full of passengers and a lot of holiday cheer. >> for toys. >> with 500,000 people expected to pass through the airport between today and january 6th, the terminals are decked out in festive decor. today is actually expected to be the busiest day here. the stovin and hines families headed on a southern tour. >> we are flying into new orleans and then driving over to mississippi, then back to new orleans, then over to alabama and then atlanta. >> after usually driving for the holidays, they're excited to be getting on a plane.

>> i'm excited for airport food. >> i'll never understand that one. >> a record number of travelers are expected to make a trip of at least 50 miles for the holidays. triple a predicts more than 119 million americans will travel from tomorrow to the first. narrowly beating out 2019 numbers. but passengers we spoke to don't mind how busy it is. >> i don't have a problem with it. i you know, i know there's going to be people it's going to get there's traffic, everyone's in a hurry, but i just take my time and just enjoy it. >> there are light displays, multiple christmas trees and even popcorn and a free gift wrapping station. once you get through security that is staffed by okay airport staff and they will fully wrap your presents for you. >> of course, tsa recommends not flying with wrapped packages just for security reasons in case they're searched. so this is a really a great opportunity so that you can still arrive at your destination with wrapped presents. >> those things make a difference for passengers like

damon douglas, but it looks like it's starting to really dig things out and bring the holiday season in. he says, especially after the pandemic, he's happy to see people getting back to enjoying this special time. >> we have a little bit of a holiday spirit nowadays. it seems like it's starting to be more prominent, so it seems like we're starting to enjoy the holidays a little bit more. >> employees and passengers showing off their christmas cheer. >> i even have some glasses that i'm going to put on in a little bit that's got christmassy stuff on them. >> merry christmas. >> in oakland. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> nobody was hurt when a small plane made an emergency landing at the former alameda naval air force base this morning. alameda fire says the pilot of the single propeller airplane reported some engine issues and landed safely around 1030. there was another person on board the plane. neither person suffered any injuries. alameda fire crews responded to the scene. they say an investigation is now underway. antioch police are sharing these photos today from a retail arrest that would not

have happened if not for california voters passing prop 36. police say an employee at target called 911 on a man who was shoplifting yesterday. officers responded in two minutes and found the man placing those stolen items in a white escalade. prop 36. he would have been cited with a misdemeanor for if it weren't for that. but now he is booked in jail for a felony charge. the car he arrived in was towed due to its role in that crime. well, london breed's tenure as san francisco mayor is coming to an end. she became mayor at the end of 2017 and has led the city through numerous highs and lows. ktvu christien kafton sat down with the mayor, who reflected on her years in office. >> san francisco mayor london breed is spending the last weeks of her administration much the same way she has the last six years serving as the city's biggest advocate. now, reflecting on her time in office, mayor breed served san francisco through the covid 19 pandemic, taking decisive action

early on to shut down the city, a move she said saved lives. >> absolutely. san francisco is one of the densest cities anywhere in the country. we had one of the lowest death rates of any major city. we didn't have our hospitals overflowing. we weren't, you know, our our morgue wasn't overflowing out of the pandemic. >> mayor breed said she grappled with a new economic reality trying to reshape the city in the post pandemic era. mayor breed said among her proudest accomplishments is cutting the red tape, transforming a city that was slow to change to a city of yes. >> so getting to yes, providing more flexible uses, and making downtown a 24 over seven neighborhood. that's what's starting to happen now. removing the restrictions is important. >> that post-pandemic period also saw a marked increase in crime. mayor breed also said she's worked to change the sometimes distorted image of san francisco to make it a destination for police officer recruitment, and helped usher in new technology, all of which she

says are responsible for the city's declining crime rate. >> we have the tools, we've changed the laws. we've built the capacity to address it a lot differently than we did when we came out of the pandemic. that is what led to these remarkable results that we're starting to see, and it's only going to get better. >> the mayor said she also worked hard to find a solution to the homelessness crisis that spilled out onto the streets. >> i really focused in on the issues that now have changed for the better. more to do, of course not where they need to be, but we have helped over 20,000 people exit homelessness permanently. >> as for her plans going forward, mayor breed is not offering a lot of details and i'm looking forward to what the future holds. >> but i got to say, just being mayor of san francisco has been a just really the honor of my life. it's been a joy. >> and while the mayor did not

churches in hayward for attacking a student at a school basketball game. video from december the 11th incident shows julius moore monroe running down a hallway at mlk junior middle school. he then punches a female student and runs off. a local mother says he is the uncle of one of the players who had an ongoing feud with the attack. victim's sister, 14 year old did get treated for minor injuries. the parent we spoke with wants to stay anonymous, says it appears monroe was trying to take matters into his own hands. >> this is bizarre that adults got involved in something to this magnitude to assault a student, and it just sounds like retaliation or something. or they've had a vendetta all this time because this is ridiculous. no matter what the cause was, this is a student and he's an

adult. >> monroe has already posted bail and is now awaiting a court date. the hayward unified school district declined to comment on the story. well, dozens of homemade guns are now off the streets after an arrest in the south bay. police in san jose were called to the area of clayton and story around six last night. once on the scene, they learned there had been a domestic violence dispute that included an assault with a deadly weapon. police say they soon arrested a male suspect seen leaving the area in a vehicle. officers were able to get a warrant to the suspect's home, where they say they found 17 privately made guns and gun parts. and some drivers getting a jump start on holiday road trips tonight are running into a little bit of patchy fog out there. a live look at conditions. interstate 80 in emeryville. and i would imagine about 3 or 4 hours ago that was packed with cars. still a little hustle and bustle out there, but not all that bad. on a getaway friday before santa flies on

has been due to the overhead clouds acting like a blanket and keeping a cap so the temperatures do not get too far out of hand. tomorrow morning when you wake up, it will be the first day of winter as the sun enters the tropic of capricorn, and therefore it's going to be the shortest day and the longest night. we do have an area of low pressure. it's banging up against the pacific northwest and also that northwestern quadrant of the state of california, providing a little bit of light rain showers. not here, although we had a smattering of some light rain around montara. meanwhile, we do have the rain upstream. we go up towards ukiah, more likely the mendocino coastline from fort bragg all the way into the point arena area. this system is rather anemic and it's a warm system, so don't look for a lot of snow in the tahoe area. this system will provide some rain showers by 5 a.m, and look how rapidly it pushes out of the area by the afternoon hours. maybe a smattering of a raindrop here or there during your

condors to take action amid bird flu concerns, zoo officials say due to the endangered status of condors and the threat to their survival, they are vaccinating all the birds against the bird flu virus, highly contagious and can wipe out entire flocks in a matter of days. california condor has been protected as an endangered species by federal law since 1967. well, today, california health officials offered an update to california's state emergency over the spread of the bird flu. the health agency stressed the risk to the general public remains low. there have been no human to human transmission so far this year. 34 people in the state have tested positive. all of them were in close contact with either cattle or poultry. experts say the virus moves very quickly between dairies and just hours before a potential

government shutdown, the house of representatives approved a stopgap spending bill. that package will fund the government through mid-march. it provides $100 billion in disaster aid, 10 billion in farm assistance. the first bipartisan bill was withdrawn by house speaker mike johnson after trump and musk campaigned against it. a second bill eliminated a provision to raise the debt ceiling that trump wanted. republicans pledged to raise it in the next congress in january. >> in january, we will make a sea change in washington. president trump will return to d.c. and to the white house, and we will have republican control of the senate and the house. things are going to be very different around here. >> the bill has headed to the senate. it is expected to pass late tonight without any difficulties, allowing members of congress to head home for the holiday break. well, union square is ringing in the holidays. a little history lesson on the salvation army's red kettle holiday drive w n

dungeness crab will soon begin in california in a limited capacity. california department of fish and wildlife announced today. commercial fishers can begin harvesting the crab starting january the 5th from the sonoma mendocino county line to the u.s. mexican border.

crabbers will only be able to put in half the number of traps they normally put in in an effort to protect humpback whales. crab season north of sonoma mendocino county line will begin january the 15th. fishers in that area will only be allowed to put in 25% of the traps they normally use. governor gavin newsom and first partner jennifer siebel newsom held a virtual ceremony to induct the first all female class into the california hall of fame. historic night saw each new member honored for their contributions to the state. many of the women inducted have bay area ties. governor newsom said their stories remind us that in california, anything is possible. >> each of these honorees represented the spirit of california, embodying values like innovation, justice, and- [music] resilience. they pushed boundaries, transcended societal norms, and inspired progress in ways that continue to resonate with people everywhere. >> the california hall of fame's

18th class featured the late tina turner, julia child, alice piper, dian fossey, mitsuyo endo, vicki draves, and ina coolbrith. draves was born and raised in san francisco, and coolbrith was the first librarian in the city of oakland. well, is the season for giving. and what better way to give than the salvation army red kettle drive? merry christmas. >> merry christmas, happy holidays. >> who were those guys? in union square today, i had a chance to do a little bell ringing along with ktvu sal castaneda red kettle holiday drive started in san francisco. if you didn't know, back in 1891. well, salvation army captain joseph mcphee trying to help feed the poor at christmas. disturbing crimes that have rocked the bay area, leaving victims feeling helpless. >> i feel like the criminal justice system is failing in california, and it's this is a symptom of it. >> many of the crimes caught on camera, with law enforcement working to find justice. >> the person who did this should be held accountable. >> this is crime files with henry lee. hello, i'm henry lee, and welcome to crime files. here in the bay area, there's been no shortage of crime, which has had devastating effects on victims. over the next half hour, we'll take a look at some of the cases that have made headlines here on ktvu. many were heartbreaking and captured on video. we begin with a wild sideshow in vallejo, but this was no ordinary sideshow involving just reckless drivers and others egging them on. this time, an innocent motorist trying to pass through a sideshow in february ended up getting attacked. video shows this white gmc pickup truck crashing into a ford mustang while trying to get through a sideshow in vallejo. that's when

things get ugly. the crowd gets angry and surrounds the truck, beating the driver, shooting at him, and stomping on his windshield near springs and rollingwood. in this video, you can see the driver wearing an orange shirt running from his truck, but it wasn't over yet. the man in orange runs into the 7-eleven at the corner and is chased by the crowd, and again attacked inside the store. some in the crowd then loot the 7-eleven of everything from cigarettes and candy to lotto scratchers and beer. >> hey. what's up? let me get my cheetos. >> at one point, someone set the victim's truck on fire. vallejo police arrived and saw many sideshow participants taking off and running red lights. the truck continued to burn. big t works at a pawn shop at the corner, which was covered with tire marks. >> yeah, he's just an innocent person trying to get to wherever he's going, and then he gets victimized and sideshows are. all they do is just, you know, disrupt everybody and they're dangerous and people get hurt. >> tom davis lives nearby. >> of course we're frustrated. we're angry. you don't see the police. you never see the police. the only time you see

the police is 30, 40 minutes later, after. after whatever happens. >> vallejo mayor robert mcconnell says those caught spinning donuts should have their licenses revoked and face stiffer penalties beyond having their cars impounded for 30 days. >> i believe it should be much longer. i would like to see 90 days, so they're just making a mockery of everybody else. >> no arrests have been reported in the attack after other sideshows. vallejo police and other law enforcement have made arrests and seized cars after the fact, sometimes months later, with registered owners on the hook for storage and tow fees. home invasions have also been a regional issue, especially with armed suspects following victims home from one city to another. that was the case in march, when a woman was confronted on her driveway in alamo. surveillance video shows a 61 year old woman pulling her mercedes g-wagon into her garage in alamo. about a minute later, this lexus is350 slowly backs into her driveway. the woman thought she knew them at first, and when i realized i didn't recognize
