with greg starts now. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. >> good evening i'm greg lee. we want to get you caught up on some of our top stories tonight. a government shutdown has been avoided. the u.s. senate forced to go into overtime, passing a continuing resolution at 12:38 a.m. saturday morning, d.c. time. the package will keep the government funded at current levels through mid-march and avoids a service stoppage, which would have affected at least nine federal agencies. this was congress's third attempt at getting a deal done. it does not include a provision to raise the debt ceiling that president elect donald trump had called for, although his adviser, elon musk, did express support for the bill online. an investigation is underway in san francisco after police shot and killed an armed man in union square during an overnight confrontation. the man, who was a security guard at the dior boutique, was wanted for hitting two pedestrians in a bicyclist with a vehicle hours earlier during a chase. the reason for

that chase is still unclear. police say they used surveillance video to identify the man, and that he allegedly confronted officers with a gun as they were trying to arrest him. a record number of travelers are expected to make a trip of at least 50 miles for the christmas holidays. triple a predicts more than 119 million americans will travel from tomorrow to the first. narrowly beating out 2019 numbers. more than 100 million are expected to travel by road, millions more by air. ktvu bailey o'carroll spoke with travelers at sfo and joins us in the newsroom with more tonight. bailey. >> hey, greg. yeah, i can tell you the airport tonight. we're at sfo, and when we were there, it was actually shockingly quiet. the lines at tsa, we never saw them have a wait longer than ten minutes. and that is something so many people that we talked to were pretty surprised about. holiday travel is expected to break records this year, but friday evening at sfo, travelers shocked at the lack of holiday crowds. >> honestly, i'm really surprised how empty it is.

>> some travelers, like steven france, his mom and sister, allowed extra time because of what they went through the last time they traveled through sfo a month ago. >> it was chaotic because of the rainstorm, and it was there was flooding on the freeways. it was very stressful to get here. >> this time around, it was a different story. >> tonight was great. it took us 50 minutes to get here, so it was perfect. and inside it's great. this is light right now. >> but at airports across the country, the lack of crowds likely won't be the case. >> what we are expecting, though, is an overall total record of 119 million travelers, and specifically the airline passengers. air travel. that's also a new record of 7.85 million. more people are flying. 2024 has been a record breaking year for air travel in general. tsa numbers also back that up. >> according to triple a, the weekend before christmas is expected to be the busiest. they say it's important to arrive extra early for your flight and to be patient. folks we spoke to

like this. mom was traveling to salinas from canada with her husband and three young kids. she says patience is key. >> it was a lot of work, honestly, but it was fun. i think at the point where they started to really look out the window when the plane was in the air. yeah. so it looks started to feel rewarding at that point. >> her advice to parents traveling with young ones this holiday. >> they have the headsets. so in-flight in-flight entertainment was really great. so they got to watch lots of movies, lots of kids entertainment. they played some games, then they had snacks as well. so i have snacks that i got for them as well. then sometimes i carry coloring books for them. >> again, experts expressing that people should get to the airport early just in case those lines do get longer, because triple a does expect this weekend to be two of the busiest days. greg, back to you. >> good advice during this season. carol in our newsroom. bailey. thank you. there will be extra chp officers on the road this christmas holiday. a two day maximum enforcement period

will begin at 6:01 a.m. christmas eve and end just before midnight christmas day. officers will be looking for drivers speeding, moving erratically and not wearing their seatbelts. the chp says last year, they arrested more than 900 people for driving under the influence over the three day christmas weekend. a man is now facing a misdemeanor charge in hayward for attacking a student at a school basketball game. video from the december 11th incident shows julius monroe running down a hallway at mlk junior middle school. then he punches a female student and runs off. a local mother says monroe is the uncle of one of the players, who had an ongoing feud with the sister of the attack victim. the 14 year old did get treated for minor injuries. the parent we spoke to, who wants to stay anonymous, says the attack was wildly inappropriate and is disappointed. the district has declined to comment. >> this was a child beat by an adult male. to know that this happened to a young lady by a

grown man, an adult, that that this is a problem. and of course there's no comment. but to not even have a comment to say that, well, we wish the best for the student or something that the student is. okay, that's that's unfortunate. >> monroe has posted bail and is now awaiting a court date. california food and health agencies have issued an update to california's state of emergency over the spread of bird flu. the health agency stressed the risk to the general public remains low. there have been no human to human transmissions so far this year. 34 people in the state have tested positive. all of them were in close contact with either cattle or poultry. experts say the virus moves very quickly between dairies. >> since the initial introduction into california in august, we've established quarantines at 679 dairies. most of those are in the central valley, which is kind of our agricultural rich part of the state. but we have just recently detected a few infected dairies in southern california as well.

>> experts say it's important to sound the alarm before the virus becomes an even bigger problem with animals and humans. the oakland zoo is vaccinating condors to take action amid bird flu concerns. zoo officials say due to the endangered status of condors and the threat to their survival, they are vaccinating the birds against bird flu. the virus, as we said, is highly contagious and can wipe out entire flocks in a matter of days. the california condor has been protected as an endangered species by federal law since 1967. new at 11 longtime san francisco giants public address announcer renel brooks-moon received a key to the city today. mayor london breed made the presentation at city hall this afternoon. brooks-moon was a longtime host on kmel radio. then she made history as the first black woman to be a public address announcer in major league baseball. the san francisco native says she hopes many others will follow in her footsteps. >> i could just only hope and pray that my time in the studio

and in the booth has inspired particularly young people of color, young women of color to go for it, to go for your dreams, even if they seem to be the impossible dream. yes, impossible dreams. can come true. yes. >> the mayor also praised brooks-moon for her tireless charitable work. christmas came early for one man in benicia, who has made it his mission to rebuild bicycles and give them away to children and teens. every year he's donated bikes would be picked up by a representative from a church, nonprofit or the fire department to be distributed. ktvu is amber lee was there this evening when he received a holiday surprise. >> dozens of bicycles loaded onto a truck in preparation for a toy giveaway this weekend, hosted by solano aids coalition in vallejo. bikes that were repaired and donated by tom delago of benicia.

>> i think when you were a kid and just, you know, pay it forward, do what you can do. >> this is the fourth year the 77 year old has taken on this labor of love. >> this style here, that's that's probably the most popular one for kids. >> he tells me each year, the number of bikes he's able to donate has grown. this year, tom's own wish came true. >> this is santa claus. >> hi. how are you? >> for the first time, tom met with a family who will be receiving four bicycles from him. each child got to select a bike to take home and ring, ring, ring and a bike. the founder of solano aids coalition brought the family to tom. the nonprofit will be adding these bicycles to its toy giveaway to low income families on sunday. >> i've been doing the toy drive for 20 years. every kid, as soon as they see a bike, like they get a bike, they get so excited. >> this mother of four says tom's gift of bicycles brightens the holiday season during difficult times. >> this year is pretty hard for our family, and so it's amazing

that mr. tom can donate these beautiful, wonderful bikes to my kids and all the other kids in the community, so it's priceless. >> it means a lot to me. >> when you saw all the bicycles you can choose from, what was your reaction? >> i was surprised. >> tom says this project is year round. he's already working on bikes for next year's giveaway. >> i just love it to know that i put that smile on their face. >> tom tells me he was able to repair and donate 70 bicycles this year. that's nearly double from last year. the solano aids coalition toy giveaway will be held at the vallejo naval museum this sunday. it starts at noon. the bicycles will be given to families who have already registered, but the event organizer tells me there will be other toys available on a first come, first serve basis. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> coming up, starbucks workers across the country are walking off the job this weekend. what they're demanding and will the

sacramento deputies have arrested a 28 year old father for allegedly murdering his one

year old child. deputies got a call for a domestic disturbance around 415 this morning. they say they tried to go inside the home, but the father refused to let them in. they had to force themselves inside. that's when they found the child's body. the discovery shocking the community. >> there's no rationale. there's nothing i can say. i have three kids. i know the deputies here are all parents themselves. it's. it's evil. >> deputies say this appears to have started as a dispute between the man's wife and his mother in law. investigators believe when the two women left the house, the man killed the child. right now, they are trying to determine what led up to the dispute and how the child died. in colorado, no criminal charges will be filed after voting system passwords more mistakenly listed on the secretary of state's website. the denver district attorney's office says an investigation found the passwords were posted by mistake in june, and were not removed until late october. a former employee who resigned before the incident apparently kept a spreadsheet with the

passwords in a hidden tab, which officials say is not standard protocol. the passwords have since been updated and there was reportedly no threat to colorado's election security as a result of the leak. the education department says it has reached an agreement with the uc system over complaints by jewish and muslim students of discrimination and harassment during protests over the war in gaza. the office for civil rights said it investigated nine complaints against four campuses, including santa cruz, davis, ucla and san diego. they concluded that the schools failed to respond effectively to both antisemitic and anti-arab harassment. the schools must step up reporting of complaints and provide training for university employees and campus police officers. you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast wrap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday through friday, or around the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. officials in santa clara county are mourning the nearly 200 unhoused people who

lost their lives this year. ktvu mark sayer shows us how the county is honoring their memories and pledging to help solve the problem. >> when i first fell into homelessness. my daughter was six months old. >> as jackie escobar tried to tell her story of life on the streets, the words would not come. the emotions just too raw. >> during that time, the hardest thing was going to work all day and ending my shift by sitting on a bench. i would watch my coworkers drag their feet. >> escobar spent four years unhoused, living mostly in her car, so marking the passings of so many whose lives she understands is very difficult. >> 187 people who did not make it out of homelessness, and people whose experiences i could relate to. >> baby girl. sol. daniel. baby boy. santo. >> san jose mayor matt mehan and others. read all 197 names

hassan, neda, kimberly mccarville, jose platero. candles were lit and faces were somber. the mayor says the city expects to open at least 1000 safe, managed spaces for the unhoused next year. >> because we know it doesn't have to be this way, and we know that the longer we let our neighbors languish on the streets, the harder it is to ever help them turn their lives around and achieve the self-sufficiency and dignity they so deserve. >> representative elect sam liccardo says at least 44 cities nationwide have more than 1000 people sleeping on the streets each night. >> yes, we have our own brand of this crisis, but this is a crisis that is national and requires a federal response. >> we could always do better. at san jose city hall, individual tombstones were set for those unhoused residents who passed in 2024. organizers here say they believe the city and the county can do more. >> we keep setting records every

a rare shelby cobra appears to have been involved in a wreck on highway 50 east of sacramento. chp shared these images of the muscle car on social media. they say the crash happened last weekend after the driver lost control over a wet patch of the freeway. no one was injured. it is not clear from the pictures whether it's an original cobra or a replica. according to the dupont registry, these cars can range from several thousand dollars to more than a million. >> while this is the last night of autumn, i hope you've enjoyed your autumn season and we will welcome the first day of winter as you go to bed tonight. that's right. that is when the sun enters the tropic of capricorn and winter officially begins. and with it, we have our first winter storm of the season. it will arrive on cue overnight tonight into your saturday morning. and that is it. it doesn't look that ominous because it's kind of falling apart at the seams there. but we

are seeing the precipitation now lift more to the north, and with it we're seeing a lot of instability. and with the dynamics, we were putting a chance of thunderstorms in the saturday morning forecast. we're taking that out of it now. now we have the secondary chunk that's going to come in on sunday night into your early monday morning. this is that one i really want to focus in on. look how much real estate really this area of low pressure is encompassing at this hour. and that's going to provide a big punch on christmas eve. until then, here's your future cast. and we have the rain showers early on saturday morning departing early in the afternoon hours. just a hit and miss scattered backwash shower during the day. that's about it. your sunday starts off mostly cloudy and watch the clock tick on by. there you have the rain showers. a little bit more ominous for your sunday evening. then it rapidly moves out before monday morning commute, leaving us with mostly cloudy skies. but meanwhile, each day will have a

>> i hope they change their mind. >> unlikely. according to the report, the new jersey based company plans to begin a, quote, winding down process immediately. the fremont location among more than a dozen party cities in the bay area. >> i was surprised when i walked in here that there was like, there's not many aisles of anything. >> the news comes 14 months after the company exited bankruptcy. for keita craft, it's just a sign of the times. as consumer preferences continue to shift online. but that doesn't mean she likes it. >> it's more impersonal. everything is online. everything is now more so. you have to order it online. you don't get to touch and feel in person. it's more distant. and i think that's the. that seems like the way things are going. and that's why you see retail closing. >> the ceo of party city, barry litwin, reportedly delivering the news to corporate employees during a conference call on friday. in that call, employees were apparently told they would not receive severance, the ceo also blaming the closure on

financial challenges, in part created by company debt and inflation. >> i think it kind of sucks because it's kind of cool. you come here one stop shop, get all the stuff you need, and you're out of there. >> now the question of where to shop come march. >> i don't know, online is cool, but then what if you have to send it back? what if it's not as big as you thought? you know, that happens in fremont, zac sos, ktvu, fox two news. >> dozens of starbucks workers are officially on strike. demonstrations began today in los angeles, chicago and seattle and could spread to hundreds of stores across the country by christmas eve. workers at about 500 company owned starbucks stores in the u.s. have voted to unionize. the striking workers claim the coffee giant has failed to honor an agreement made in february to reach a labor agreement. this year, starbucks accuses the union of prematurely leaving the bargaining table in the amazon strike is still ongoing, with no end in sight. workers at delivery hubs in cities including san francisco, new york and atlanta walked off the job thursday. they're calling

his annual holiday toy drive is underway in san leandro. firefighters partnered with local businesses and organizations for the 15th year of the event, and have so far collected thousands of toys to give to kids for the holidays. the alameda county fire chief tells us the firefighters who organized the toy drive have been focused on making sure they can give gifts to as many kids as they can on christmas, come from members of the community that have wanted to make sure that someone has a christmas, and they've really been the focus of marcus here, who is our toy drive program coordinator, and he has been doing outreach and making sure that people know that we're here and what we're trying to do for the community. organizers say they get a lot of emails from families asking for help, and it's rewarding to be able to give back during the holidays. new at 11, the beloved world war two veteran in the east bay. known as papa jake, turned 102 years old today. jake larson is a tiktok star with more than 842,000 followers. and

today, the endearing centenarian celebrated his birthday at the fuddruckers in concord. papa jake tells ktvu he's grateful to be here today, but even more grateful for all the men who died storming omaha beach with him. >> i can't believe it. i feel like i should be about 6065. those guys gave their life for me. they're up there. they're up there and looking down right now. so i got to make a good impression. >> happy birthday, papa jake. we asked him what his birthday wish is this year. he said he can't ask for any more than he's already been blessed with. all right. there was no jackpot winner tonight for the mega millions lottery draw. as the top prize nears $1 billion. the jackpot, now $944 million. five people did match five of the numbers, claiming $1 million each. i was not one of those. those were in arkansas, illinois, pennsylvania and two
