of a man who was one of a kind. the late rickey henderson. >> he played the game. just attracted you to him. you know, his look, his muscles, his speed, his everything about him. >> fans leaving flowers for the hall of famer outside the oakland coliseum tonight, a venue he called home for 14 seasons. good evening. i'm cristina rendon. henderson, who grew up in oakland, died at the age of 65. ktvu zac sos was out today speaking with fans. he joins us in studio with more on what everyone is saying. chizak. >> yeah, and many of those fans really still in disbelief over his death. this is a player who many remember cheering on as kids, perhaps the greatest to ever wear green and gold, and a player who really embodied what it meant to be an a. >> i just wanted to pay my respects to rickey. >> lifelong a's fan gabriel hernandez, arriving outside the coliseum saturday as news of rickey henderson's passing spread pins on his jacket and hat honoring the oakland great stolen base bandit.

>> may 1st, 1990 91 the hall of famer gracing the turf here. >> over 14 seasons beginning in 1979. >> 2024 is was already a tough year for oakland a's fans, and number 24 is getting taken away from us across town at george and waltz in rock ridge. >> i was here and kind of just like got caught by surprise. just kind of couldn't believe it. i've seen him around oakland in the last couple of months. >> ron bullard, junior, growing up watching the star left fielder in the 80s. >> i was there for the game where he got 130. >> a player known, perhaps just as well for his unique style as his skills on the field. >> the way that he played and the kind of way that he carried himself. he was, you know, kind of confident, kind of changed the game. and, you know, the way that it was with his crouching in the batter's box sitting nearby, another super fan, bartender dan rail. >> he was my favorite player growing up. i had all of his baseball cards. >> years later, his chance encounter at the bar with the slugger, one he'll never forget.

>> we played pool in that pool table after hours. i told my boss about this today because i was like, you know, it's rickey henderson. you got to let him play pool after hours. and i actually beat him on that pool table over there. he was really nice. i mean, you wouldn't assume that he was just a mega superstar. >> similar stories being told a few miles away in san leandro at rickey's sports lounge. >> it's sad. he's a legend. i mean, he was a legend. >> so the local watering hole one he was known to stop by. always modest, friendly, real low key, you know. >> and he used to come in all the time, and he'd sit right here all across the bay area. >> his fan base now almost at a loss for words. >> he played so hard. he played with so much heart. >> yeah. yet another fan there who had a chance to meet him in person, telling me he was the type of player who respected, who he respected for how he handled himself on the field and off of it to so many. just

absolutely heartbroken tonight. >> yeah, everywhere i went today, it just seems that people are reacting to this. you know, he's such an icon. so many people are going to miss him. zach thank you. now, it's important to note the family did not release the cause of death. but henderson's wife and daughters released this statement saying, quote, we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support and heartfelt memories from family, friends and fans, all of which have brought immense comfort. we also extend our sincere gratitude to the mlb. the oakland a's, and the incredible doctors and nurses at ucsf who cared for ricky with dedication and compassion. your prayers and kindness mean more than words can express. the former oakland a's organization, now known as the athletics, called henderson one of the greatest baseball players of all time, saying, quote, he was undoubtedly the most legendary player in oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of a's fans over his 14 seasons wearing the green and gold, the chairperson of the national baseball hall of fame released a statement saying rickey henderson was not only

the greatest base stealer of all time, but one of the most memorable personalities of his generation. the enthusiasm and energy he brought to cooperstown each year will truly be missed. our thoughts are with his wife, pamela, and their family. again, henderson was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in 2009. tributes have been pouring in for henderson, everyone from former teammates, major and minor league teams, companies to elected officials all weighing in on henderson's passing. henderson did spend a quarter of a century playing in the major leagues. in a career that spanned from the 1970s all the way into the 2000. ktvu bailey o'carroll takes a look back at henderson's upbringing in the east bay and his hall of fame career. no contest. >> steals third base, jerks the bag from its moorings. >> nobody stole more bases. nobody hit more leadoff home runs. nobody celebrated with more flair. and nobody was beloved in the bay area quite like rickey henderson.

>> and all y'all beautiful fans for supporting me. >> he played 24 seasons in the major leagues for nine teams, many of those with the a's. rickey henderson was one of the greatest players to ever grace the baseball field. he had that rare combination of speed, power and swagger. >> grab the shirt. yeah. style. style. >> rickey henderson was born in 1958 on christmas day in chicago, illinois, in the back of an oldsmobile. on the way to the hospital when he was seven, he moved to oakland and as a kid learned to play baseball, batting right handed but throwing with his left. and when he couldn't afford tickets to a's games, he started sneaking into the coliseum. >> you know, we were going out there, maybe just to get a ball. you know, we didn't get a ball or something that they can give us. it was a joyful time for us. >> he graduated from oakland tech high school in 1976, where he played baseball and football, and he was good at both. in fact, he was an all-american running back and dreamed of playing pro football for the oakland raiders. but his mom

told him he'd have a longer career in baseball. so he turned down more dozen football scholarships to go pro, signing with the oakland a's right out of high school. >> follow your dream. believe in your dream because dreams do come true. >> henderson was an opposing pitchers nightmare. he could take one deep right field. >> is it going to fall? >> is it going to fall? there it is. there it is. number 3000 for rickey henderson. >> but you couldn't walk him because he'd happily steal second and third. in 1982, he didn't just break the single season record for stolen bases. he shattered it with 130. >> today, i am the greatest of all time. thank you. >> he also holds the mlb records for career stolen bases, runs, unintentional walks and leadoff home runs. he was the american league's mvp in 1990, a member of the 3000 hit club, a two time world series champion with the a's and blue jays, and ten time

all star. in 2009, he was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in his first year of eligibility. his plaque there reads rickey henderson used the ultimate combination of power and speed to break numerous records. he played in 3081 games and was known as the man of steel. and as rickey said, if my uniform doesn't get dirty, i haven't done anything in the baseball game. >> when you think of me, i would like you to remember that kid from the inner city that played the game with all his heart and never took the game for granted. >> the game, as illustrious as his career, was on the field. the stories about henderson off of it are equally as legendary, and while not all of them ring true, some shockingly are. one day, henderson got a call from the a's finance department asking why he hadn't cashed his $1 million signing bonus. his answer was simple it was framed on his wall, and he made a

childhood promise to himself that if he became a millionaire, he would frame the check. henderson was a man of his word. [music] even after his career with the a's came to an end, henderson continued to be involved with the franchise, stopping by on game days to meet with players and say hey to fans. before the a's played their final home game in oakland back in late september, it was rickey henderson and dave stewart tossing out the ceremonial first pitches. thank you rickey. just a few days earlier, henderson's daughter threw out the first pitch before a game against the yankees, and rickey was there behind home plate. and that ballpark that felt like home, surrounded by blood and baseball family to catch the pitch. henderson was 65 years old. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> rickey henderson was a fixture in bay area sports for decades. ktvu joe fonzi spent years covering him. joe says henderson found a unique level of satisfaction, electrifying

in a honda accord. no arrests have been reported. oakland police are investigating after two people were fatally shot. it happened at around 1115 last night at a home on fairmount avenue near garland avenue, north of lake merritt. police say two people were shot. both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. their identities have not been released. police are looking into reports that people got into an argument before the shooting. and that shooting is under investigation. and in san francisco, police say a person was stabbed near fifth and bryant streets around 130 this afternoon. few dails are being released about this cas but we're told the victim was treated by medics and taken to the hospital. their condition is unknown tonight. no arrests have been made. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. a crash in pleasanton is under investigation tonight. video shows the front of a car sticking out of hunan chef near santa rita road and valley avenue this afternoon. several firefighters and police officers

responded, though it is unknown what led up to this crash. firefighters say the driver and the people inside the restaurant were not hurt. a driver on the peninsula died after crashing into the back of a caltrans subcontractor truck. it happened in redwood city around 140 this morning on northbound highway 101, south of the whipple exit. the chp says it appears the driver moved into a closed lane and hit a couple of cones, and then crashed into the back of a parked ram truck that was doing work on the highway. the workers in the truck were not hurt. the lanes were temporarily closed while chp investigated. san jose police say several officers were struck by a suspected drunk driver last night. they say the driver collided with two parked patrol cars and three officers had minor injuries. police say this should serve as a good reminder that drunk or buzzed driving is never safe, and say it's best to choose a sober driver or use a rideshare to get home. more than a dozen children are killed by airstrikes on the

city. i did see trace amounts in san jose. here's the satellite and the radar as you can pick out a lot of cloud cover showing up over northern california and some green on the radar as well. not all this really translating to heavy rainfall, but maybe that mist or some drizzle. and that's what we have for tonight across parts of the bay area. as a closer look at the radar, showing you some of the moisture out there so you could be encountering a light shower or some drizzle out there. here's our live camera looking out toward oakland jack london square. it's actually fairly mild. remember a few days ago temperatures were stuck in the 40s with that persistent fog. but it's 10:00 and temperatures are still in the 50s. santa rosa 53, oakland 55 and san jose checking in 57 degrees. a big heads up if you are heading to the coast. we have a big swell heading toward our shoreline. in fact, it's already been out there. high surf advisories continue and the swell will continue to be around into next week. and this is extremely dangerous surf. you can see tomorrow 15 to 20ft could be approaching 30ft on monday. so

21 year old gabriel delara from san martin. his body was found sunday in an unincorporated part of santa clara county. his family reported him missing back on december 1st. the cause of death is unknown. well, tonight, blake lively is taking legal action against justin baldoni, her costar and director, in the recent film it ends with us. the complaint was filed friday with the california civil rights department. lively is charging the actor director with sexual harassment on the set of their movie. she's also accusing baldoni and his studio of embarking on a, quote, multi-tiered plan to damage her reputation. his attorney is calling the allegations completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious. a film set in the bay area is getting praises from former president barack obama. the coming of age film won two sundance awards, and today the film is being recognized as obama's favorite movie of 2024. the film, directed by shaun wang, tells the story of deedee, a taiwanese

unite here local two says the new four year contract, approved late last night, applies to around 600 workers, including 250 who had been on strike at the grand hyatt. this is the same deal marriott workers agreed to on thursday. the agreement keeps the current union health insurance plan, increases wages and creates new protections against understaffing. amazon workers are striking at delivery hubs across the nation, as many americans are scrambling to finish their christmas shopping. fox's max gordon spoke with the teamsters and heard what amazon has to say about the timely demonstration. >> amazon delivery drivers are looking for better working conditions as well as higher pay, and this is the way that they're making their voices heard. by slowing down operations at amazon, delivery facilities like this one in the city of industry, california. essentially, they're slowing down operations by stopping vans at exits, talking to drivers about the strike and about the teamsters union. on friday,

teamsters union president sean o'brien walked the picket line with workers, and he said that if packages arrive late for the holidays, it's not the teamsters fault, it's amazon's. >> they chose to cause this disruption. and, you know, the narrative is great how you know they care about the consumers. this has nothing to do with the consumers. this has nothing to do with time. and we have leverage. this is our leverage right now to show how valuable these workers are, both inside and outside. and amazon chose this timing, not us. >> thousands of drivers for firms that contract with amazon walked off the job across the country thursday morning. the strike is growing with an additional warehouse on staten island joining on saturday, organized by the teamsters union. the workers say they're demanding a fair union contract that guarantees wages, health care and safety. amazon says that their operations are largely unaffected amid the last minute rush to deliver holiday packages. they also say that the teamsters have been bullying workers into joining, and that since the workers striking aren't amazon employees just contractors, they have no reason

from the u.s. under president elect donald trump's administration. new at ten, president elect trump's daughter in law will not be florida's next u.s. senator. lara trump announced on social media today she is taking herself out of consideration to replace marco rubio, who has been tapped to be the next secretary of state. lara trump stepped down as the rnc co-chair several weeks ago, leading many to speculate she might run for office. instead, she promised a big announcement to share in january. crisis averted. in washington, at least for now. the latest stopgap interim spending measure passed in the house late friday and in the middle of the night for the senate. this move averted a government shutdown right before the holidays. fox's madeline rivera has more from washington. >> after remaining largely silent about the spending fight, something the white house says was intentional, president biden released a statement about the bill. he says, in part, this agreement represents a compromise, which means neither side got everything it wanted.

department of public health, which says respiratory virus activity is on the rise. according to the department's latest weekly report, data from december 8th to december 14th. positive flu tests were up 13%. rsv up nearly 8%. some good news though covid activity is relatively low. only 2% higher than the week before. the department also said many californians who should receive a flu vaccine have not gotten one yet. the next weekly reporting will resume january 1st. california food and health agencies have issued an update to california's state of emergency over the spread of bird flu. the health agency stressed the risk to the general public remains low. there have been no human to human transmissions so far this year. 34 people in the state have

away food on the saturday before christmas. the fire chief says this is all in an effort to make sure that the community is fed for the holidays. >> we give out chickens, turkeys, rice, canned goods, all the things that are needed to have a good holiday christmas meal. >> today's helping hands were active firefighters and community members, along with volunteers from the event partner, the oakland housing authority. volunteers today helped hundreds of families facing food insecurity in santa clara county. more than 300 families received meals, groceries and toys for children at the hunger at home event. it was held at lincoln glen church in san jose. organizers say roughly one in every four people in silicon valley is currently experiencing food insecurity. >> today is our 51st distribution of the year. getting ready for 2025. last year we did at the lincoln glen church about 350 families. this year we expect to do about 450. we see the need continue to grow. and again, as we continue

leading the laughs. her name is lisa. oleg. good duldig excuse me, about the origins of the unique holiday show. >> it came about in 1993 when i went to perform in massachusetts at a women's comedy night, at what i thought was going to be a comedy club called the peking garden club. i got there and it was a chinese restaurant, and a conversation with a friend after that led to the idea of doing jewish comedy on christmas in a chinese restaurant. >> tickets are still available online. there are two shows a night on christmas eve, christmas day and the 26th. this is happening at the imperial palace in chinatown. >> well, the weekend starting off with lots of cloud cover and some scattered rain across parts of the bay area. today's system not a major storm, but it's going to open up the door for more significant rain over the next few days. so for your sunday, mostly cloudy skies, we're going to bump up the rain chances tomorrow evening. a bit of a breeze with winds out of the southeast, maybe 10 to 15

miles an hour and temperatures. it's a warmer pattern. temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. so here's kind of the bigger model here, showing you the big view in the pacific. and we're showing you multiple systems. first one is tomorrow night, and then another one will be monday night and into tuesday. and this of course, christmas eve. this is the one that definitely we'll keep an eye on. this will produce some heavy rain, some strong winds and maybe some thunderstorms in the day. the pattern could remain active later in the week after christmas, so we'll watch out for more potential rainfall. as you can see, this particular update wants to bring in some more rainfall by friday, so it's not going to be a long stretch of dry days, but we will have those breaks. so multiple storms on the way sunday evening rainfall develops tuesday rain and wind, the possibility of some thunderstorms. and then after christmas, we're tracking multiple rain chances as well. over the next seven days, those rainfall totals could really be adding up, possibly maybe around an inch in the south bay up in san francisco could be approaching two inches and the north bay hills maybe 5 to 6in.

so this is over the next seven days. this rainfall forecast with multiple systems developing offshore. right now, though, you can see the system that moved moved into northern california today, a lot of cloud cover. nothing really too organized here, but still some green showing up on the radar. a lot of this in the form of some mist or some drizzle. livermore right now reporting some light rain in the sierra. they're reporting some light rain in south lake tahoe. so it's a warmer system. so as a result you have higher snow levels, but no winter storm warnings posted right now as we check out the bay area radar view. once again, lots of clouds, some mist or some drizzle and temperatures in the 50s, so it's still fairly mild across the bay area for tonight. overnight temperatures will be in the upper 40s to the 50s. lots of clouds. there's the chance of some mist or some drizzle or light shower, especially early tomorrow morning around 5 or 6:00. but here's the overall weather pattern. here's our next system coming up offshore. and then as we kind of widen the view, there's more development here. and that will be a stronger

storm, especially by tuesday that will be racing toward our coastline. that will have more dynamics, more support to produce those heavy downpours first thing tuesday morning. so here's the forecast model. here we are tomorrow morning. lots of clouds once again. maybe some mist or some drizzle. and then this is the afternoon hours. picking up the afternoon hours here 3:00 and then into sunday evening. so this will be a burst of some steady rainfall sunday evening across the bay area. that band, that band tries to move to the south. and then as you can see into monday, there's the chance of some scattered rain showers in the monday forecast. but the main core of the next system wants to come on board late monday night and into tuesday, so there'll be a heavy rain producer that will impact travel here in northern california, in the bay area. and then on wednesday for christmas day, it looks like most of the day should be dry. highs for tomorrow will be in the upper 50s to the 60s. and here's a look ahead. your five day forecast. there's that shower chance for monday. this is the storm we really have to watch on tuesday. and then on wednesday. partly to mostly cloudy skies

of mlb hall of famer and oakland a's legend rickey henderson, who died on friday. henderson was known as the man of steel because of his incredible ability to steal bases. he earned multiple awards during his career, including mvp, ten all-star selections, two world series titles, and a gold glove award. dave stewart grew up with rickey in oakland and was his teammate on the a's. he reflected on his passing. >> rickey is the person that you think is going to live forever. you can never imagine a day like yesterday happening where he's gone. and so i think to a man, to a t, all of his teammates are shocked at the news. no one thought that this would be the fate of rickey henderson. no one
