the oval office. >> time now is 746. a child's brain develops rather quickly 1 million neural connections per second from birth up to age three. by age three, most toddler brains are already hardwired, so it's vital to introduce them to information that will provide a strong building block for a successful, and of course, a happy life. doctor kendra mcneil is a pediatrician at kaiser east bay. i spoke to her about tablets and phones and how to ease electronics into a child's life, and some alternative holiday toys that will help promote creativity and an imagination. >> absolutely. so the toddler and infant stage are so important for child's brain growth and development, as well as their social and emotional development. and so those are times when you really want to make sure that you're maximizing interacting and engaging with young children just to really help them in those social and emotional brain development phases. >> how about the side effects to too much screen time? what are
7:48 am
they? >> so what we've seen, unfortunately, is that some of the side effects that are adverse to too much screen time include a delay in social development, as well as a delay in language, which is curious because a lot of times parents feel as though exposing children early to some of these shows and screens actually improves their language, but it does the opposite. so it delays language skills because of the lack of interaction and engagement. and then for older children, too much screen time can actually lead to social isolation and depression and impulsivity with their behavior. >> well, it's one thing to have a phone or a laptop or a computer, but how about gaming? is it the same with that? >> yes. so it's definitely the same with gaming in particular games that do have some violent content. and so those children who are exposed to games with violent content do exhibit more aggressive and violent behavior towards peers and towards others that they engage with. >> so while we're all shopping for the holidays and you want to
7:49 am
give a gift to a toddler or a young child that is going to, you know, open up their imagination, what do you recommend? >> yeah. so holiday time is a really great time to be able to give a young child something that is going to help to expand their horizons and something that's going to help them to engage with the environment that's around them, and the caregivers and parents and family members who are around them. so kind of going back to basics like books, puzzles, board games for younger children that are age appropriate balls, frisbees, all types of different things that children can actually, tangibly put their hands on and that they can engage with with you and play with these things with you. this is really an optimal gift for a young child or a toddler. >> i know as a kid it was all about building blocks, lincoln logs, tinker toys. i imagine those are good as well. >> absolutely, absolutely. because with those type of building blocks or toys that they can kind of make something on their own. the possibilities
7:50 am
are really limitless. >> and i bet their self-esteem comes up because you've created something as opposed to, you know, passively watch something. >> exactly, exactly. so positive impacts to the self-esteem come in when you help your child to build something or make something, and then they look towards you to see what your reaction is and what your response is to what it is that they've made. and then you're able to give them that positive reinforcement and tell them what a great job they did and help them to move along to build the next thing. so again, those are things that would be lost if a child was just looking at a screen and looking towards a character or looking towards the moderator on a show who's maybe pausing for engagement, but it's not going to be the same as that one on one. >> well, i think screen time things, computers, phones, they're here to stay. so how much is too much? screen time. take us through the ages up to maybe a 6 or 7 year old. >> yeah. so the american academy of pediatrics has actually modified the screen time guidelines because of the fact
7:51 am
that, as you mentioned, screens are here to stay. so we want to make sure that parents and caregivers have good tools and guidelines to utilize at different ages. so for children 18 months and younger, the american academy of pediatrics actually recommends no screen time whatsoever, with the exception of video chatting with family members or friends, because they can actually engage in real time. for children who are 18 months to about 2 to 3 years old, there's a minimum amount of screen time that is permitted or, you know, that is recommended. but we recommend co-watching with the child. so not just plopping them in front of the screen or the tablet, but watch with them. so then that way you can still continue to engage with them and then reteach those lessons that they're learning from from the show or from the game or whatever it is that they're doing for children once they hit preschool age. and, you know, let's say early school, kindergarten, first grade five and six year olds. so again, we recommend doing the co-watching with the children, continuing to engage with them with lessons that are being taught, and then also very carefully monitoring the content for violence for,
7:52 am
you know, things that are not appropriate, things that might be scary and interfere with sleep. the other important thing is making sure that children are not engaging with screens right before bedtime, because that can lead to nightmares that can lead to trouble with initiation of sleep and being able to stay asleep. and that's a really important part of their growth and development, is making sure that they have enough sleep through the evening. >> i think as big kids can learn from that too. yes. >> absolutely. >> well, doctor mcneil, with kaiser permanente in the east bay, thank you so much for your thoughts and have a great holiday. we appreciate it. >> thank you so much for having me. you have a great holiday to. >> these are the devil. >> as you hold yours. >> i know, don't you love that little app that comes up screen time for this week? 6.5 hours. like, really? >> yes. well, i think that's. >> i think that's why they have it. so that it just reminds us that we can put it down, put it away, and try to take some time

no playoffs, you know. we're playing three good teams to finish this year off. and honestly i want to finish strong heading into next season. you know because that carry over is real is the fact that it is 49ers playing out string. >> they sit at six and eight and said rock bottom last in the nfc west. far cry from a so-called super bowl favorite. the niners will face miami today in week 16. three more games to play. so what lies ahead for this injury riddled team that has a huge contract looming with their quarterback brock purdy? let's climb inside the huddle on this sunday and get the scoop from rob stats. guerrera with the gold standard podcast. how are you? rob, you got your voice back. >> oh, it's coming back just in time for the final three games. >> that a baby? okay. good news. well, let's start with purdy and that contract. his agent floating some rather big numbers out there. honestly, can the niners afford to pay brock 50 to 60 million bucks a season and still be able to field a super bowl contender, that they can

find ways to fit it under the salary cap. >> but once you do that, you're playing the game on difficult mode. essentially, you have to really crush your drafts, because what that does is it makes it harder to acquire talent, and the draft is the way to acquire cheap talent. so you really have to start nailing your draft classes. once you pay your quarterback top dollar. last year's draft class was excellent. the niners are going to need more of that if they do end up paying brock purdy 50 to $60 million a year, which i believe they will. >> speaking of contracts, dre greenlaw is a free agent this year. will we see him play the final three games much coming off that achilles injury? is he worth the big dollar deal? >> well, that's the big question. we don't know how much he's going to physically be able to do. he took himself out of the rams game in the second half essentially because he didn't feel quite right. he really kind of has to prove it to himself, prove it to the niners and really the rest of the league because he's a free agent, that he's going to be healthy enough to go in 2025. if he is, the 40

niners should definitely resign dre greenlaw. not only is he an incredible linebacker who really improves their defense, but he's also the heart and soul of this defense. he's the physical presence in the middle of the field. not really fred warner. it's more dre greenlaw who brings that attitude to this defense. so i would love to see greenlaw back with san francisco next year. >> yeah i know he missed the whole season. plays one half of football and leads them in tackles. and that seattle game. how about christian mccaffrey tendonitis in his achilles. he's done for the year. and that's got to be a huge concern for next year. he only played in four games this year not a touchdown in the bunch. >> yeah. if you had told me that that's what was going to happen with christian mccaffrey, i never would have believed you. but that's the situation right now. and look, he's an older running back. he keeps himself in phenomenal shape. obviously the injury that he had against the bills was not related to his achilles in any way. so that is good. but i think the question is can christian mccaffrey find a way to train in the off

season, but not overtrain? because i think that's where he got himself into trouble this year. by his own admission, he did too much. so he needs to find a way to throttle back, but also keep himself in good enough shape to be able to hold up throughout an entire season. >> and let's talk deebo and brandon aiyuk. throw in mccaffrey again. those three scored 40 touchdowns combined last year. this year two in the entire bunch. do they need another wide receiver. >> well it'd be nice to know if ricky pearsall and jacob cowing could play. i mean that's definitely something i'm keeping my eye on in these last three games because in theory, they shouldn't need another wide receiver, or at least the receiver that they need should already be on the roster between ricky pearsall and jacob cowing. the problem is, ricky pearsall hasn't caught more than one pass in a game since november, and poor jacob cowing hasn't even gotten a single target since his 50 yard reception against the chiefs earlier this year. so i think job one for the 49ers in these last three games is get 14
