tonight, the shelter they've been helping homeless and others who are hurting since 1965. a safe space for men, women and children when they have nowhere else to turn. as shelters gear up for a busy holiday week inside the bustling kitchen of the bay area rescue mission in richmond, it's just as busy as ever. it's where you'll find comfort. that's her name, and she's here to make comfort food. the secret ingredient a lot of love. the domestic violence survivor once turned to the bay area rescue mission for help. >> they have changed my life, you know, coming here as an abused relationship and joining the program, going to school. >> comfort would enroll in the shelter's vocational program, go on to get a scholarship to italy to study culinary arts and bring those skills right back to the place that gave her a clean slate. according to the organization, more than 34,000 people in the bay area are

>> the 49ers quest for a sixth super bowl trophy will have to wait another season. the niners were eliminated from playoff contention after the washington commanders and the division rival la rams won their games this afternoon. the niners postseason hopes were dashed before this evening's matchup against the miami dolphins even before kickoff. the niners went on to lose 29 to 17. we'll have more highlights from the game coming up later in sports. >> new at ten. three people were killed in two separate crashes today in santa clara cnty. police in morgan hill were called to a crash near the intersection of third street and monterey road around three this morning. once there, officers learned a driver lost control of their vehicle before hitting multiple trees and fe hydrant in the center median and rolling over. t driver did not survive. it's unclear what led to this iident. in the second crash, police were called t monterey road and middle anue

around 840 this morning. that's about two and a half miles from the first crash. once there, police learned a driver was speeding southbound on monterey road when they lost control of their vehicle and hit another car going in the same direction. both drivers died in the crash. so far, neither of them have been identified. >> in the east bay, multiple businesses were burglarized this weekend in oakland. criminals used cars to ram into them in order to steal things like atms. as ktvu amanda quintana shows us, the burglaries are reportedly all linked to the same group of thieves. >> surveillance cameras caught the moment a van backed up right into mr. crosby's barbershop. >> they rammed it and came right in. >> the criminals go straight for the atm in the back corner, push it outside, load it into the trunk of a second car and take off. it all took less than two minutes. >> near the vehicle. the vehicle had license plates. they had masks and was covered up.

>> reporter. the owner, donald smith, known as mr. crispy, showed up for work soon after. >> when i pulled up, i saw the whole front of this was wide open and it was unbelievable. >> despite the damage to the window equipment and a hole that looks right into the nail shop next door, he's most disappointed in the police response. >> you know, people got families to feed, so it's just very depressing that they could've at least showed up. and, you know, something sent somebody. >> eventually a client was able to wave down an officer who just happened to be stopped at the intersection outside. but that was more than eight hours after they called 911. >> this was just super ridiculous that they just left all of us here stranded all these hours. and, you know, just to talk about it, you know, it's just it hurts for that reason. like, what about us? we're pay taxes, you know, providing services for the community. >> the officer told smith they were busy because nine other

businesses were also hit that morning, all using the same vehicles seen by their cameras. oakland police confirmed a car rammed into a chevron gas station a few minutes later. then. east bay restaurant supply and a 76 station where an employee fired shots, scaring off the suspects. smith believes these criminals are coming from outside of the city, targeting oakland because they know police won't chase them as soon as they see you break a law or something and you get in a car and run, they just they act like they don't see you and go the other way. he hopes the city and the police department can make some changes, so no other businesses have to go through this. >> i don't look forward to going anywhere. i love my city, but we just need the people to get rid of the criminals. >> in oakland, amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> san jose police shared these photos today from a retail theft bust. several suspects entered two stores at a mall in west san jose yesterday. they were carrying this equipment, which is used to bypass retail theft

one of its most unique and beloved figures this weekend, hall of fame baseball player and longtime oakland resident rickey henderson died friday at the age of 65. henderson, who graduated from oakland tech, played 24 seasons in the major leagues for nine teams. he spent most of his career with the a's. in 2009, he was inducted to the baseball hall of fame. in his first year of eligibility, and warriors head coach steve kerr said he was stunned by the news yesterday of rickey henderson's

passing. >> one of the all time great athletes in the history of our country, just stunning athleticism and fun baseball player to watch and beloved in the bay area. >> henderson's family released a statement thanking fans for the outpouring of love, but did not release his cause of death. he would have turned 66 on christmas day and tributes to henderson have been pouring in everywhere, from former teammates to major and minor league teams, companies and elected officials are all weighing in on henderson's passing. >> earlier this evening, we spoke with former oakland a's executive andy dolich. he worked with rickey henderson during the player's two stints with the a's. doordash says it was a gut punch hearing the legendary baseball player had died. doordash says the hall of famer will always be a part of oakland. >> people identified rickey because of his oakland roots.

stolen more, holding the mlb record for career stolen bases, runs and unintentional walks and leadoff home runs, rickey henderson is undoubtedly an indelible part of the oakland a's, and while he's no longer on the field, he continues to be a major part of the franchise, greeting fans and stopping by the stadium on game days to meet with players keeping ever close to the team that he loves. >> it was so wonderful that i got the opportunity to get drafted by the a's and then became the a's players and played in the stadium. >> the 1990 american league mvp's love for the game was sown and grown. when the oakland coliseum opened back in 1968. henderson was just ten years old. his family would take him to games there, and when he couldn't afford to pay to see the game, he and his friends would sneak inside. >> you know, we were going out there, maybe just to get a ball, you know, we didn't get a ball or something that they can give us. it was a joyful time for us. >> the oakland tech grads love

for the game, and the team only grew when he watched them clinch three consecutive world series championships in 1972, 73 and 74, all while marveling at his favorite player, reggie jackson. >> it seemed like it was a unity as a family thing. it was something that, you know, the kids can get away and enjoy the ballpark, enjoy the things that was going around us. so, you know, i had a lot of fun doing that. >> of course, henderson was a fan long before he was a player. so when he talks about the team leaving oakland, he looks at the loss from their perspective too. >> it's so sad about for the fans to me about, you know, the joy that these sports teams gave us and now we don't have nothing. and what are we going to do? what is the city going to do for us? the entertainment. >> and while many blame the team's owner, he says the city of oakland shares responsibility for not doing enough to keep the institution rooted in a place it's called home for decades. >> there's such a so sad feeling between the oakland a's and the city, and i blame both of them.

ktvu, fox two news. >> now to our weather and high surf warning in effect for pacific coast beaches. this is what it looked like this afternoon in pacifica. that warning runs through tuesday and includes beaches from cloverdale to monterey. officials are warning people if in doubt, stay out. the wet weather system headed toward the bay area has prompted marin county to open an emergency shelter this week. the marin health and wellness campus in san rafael on kerner road, is set to open tomorrow at 5 p.m. through tuesday at 6 a.m. ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin is here now. and, bill, we're seeing some rain out there tonight. >> yeah, a little bit of light rain out there now. amber. it kind of goes away tomorrow and then it turns back on on tuesday. tuesday is probably going to be the wettest day of this week. at least that's how it looks now. here's the long range model. we're just going to click through it. and you're hearing about atmospheric rivers. there's some components of atmospheric rivers involved in all these systems. but the first thing i'll tell you before we go through this model, just

take it every 24 hours at a time, every 36 hours, because the models have a real tough time with this type of weather pattern, in that this entire week is going to be unsettled to some extent. rain further north, maybe it drifts south, maybe it doesn't. maybe we get real wet. maybe we just get kind of wet. maybe we don't get a lot at all. maybe san jose doesn't get anything. i mean, that's the kind of thing we're up against. so tuesday will be our first opportunity for real rainfall. this is tonight. and then here goes tuesday right here. and then this is not a granular model. so it's really just broad brush. but that's. tuesday is a wet day for sure. from front to back. and then here we go into wednesday. something to the north right. then it breaks off. maybe something thursday morning maybe some drizzle and then something more on thursday evening. maybe a little more than drizzle, but not much according to that. and then a flow. that's a zonal flow there. that's sort of an atmospheric river flow. but it's mainly to the north. if you look at where the rain ends up. so it's not going to take much for these

50 year old psychiatrist who immigrated from saudi arabia nearly 20 years ago. investigators are looking for a motive, including the possibility that the suspect was angry over the treatment of saudi refugees in germany. >> london breed's tenure as san francisco mayor is coming to an end. she became mayor at the end of 2017, and has led the city through numerous highs and lows. ktvu christien kafton sat down with the mayor, who reflected on her years in office. >> san francisco mayor london breed is spending the last weeks of her administration much the same way she has the last six years serving as the city's biggest advocate. now, reflecting on her time in office, a term that started in the turmoil following the death of her predecessor, ed lee, then president of the board of supervisors, breed briefly served as acting mayor and was elected to serve the remainder of lee's term, guiding the city through its grief. >> along with trying to process it myself, i had to roll up my sleeves and just reassure the

and so i believe that during my time in doing all of this work, we have set san francisco up for what is possible. >> that post-pandemic period also saw a marked increase in crime. mayor breed said she brought on a new district attorney to make sure there was accountability and consequences for those who break the law, including drug dealers and drug users. as the city struggled with a surge in fentanyl use. mayor breed also said she's worked to change the sometimes distorted image of san francisco to make it a destination for police officer recruitment, and helped usher in new technology, all of which she says are responsible for the city's declining crime rate. >> we have the tools, we've changed the laws. we built the capacity to address it a lot differently than we did when we came out of the pandemic. that is what led to these remarkable results that we're starting to see, and it's only going to get better. >> the mayor said she also worked hard to find a solution

coin is worth thousands of dollars. the salvation army says the money from the donation will directly support programs in napa. >> sneakercon made its way to the bay area this weekend, bringing thousands of shoes for people to buy, sell or trade. thousands of people came out to the santa clara convention center to shop 300 shoe vendors, most of them independent brands and sellers. sneaker con brands itself as the world's largest sneaker store under one roof, where sneaker fans can connect with content creators, trade, buy and sell, and have sneakers authenticated. some of the sellers have been in the business for years, like darien thomas of sneaker max, who sells shoes on social media. organizers say their goal is to put these small business owners in front of their customer base just hustling, selling shoes, sneakers, clothing anywhere from expensive high luxury brands to nike's from the store. >> at one point, all of these brands started off as, you know, people that just come and vend at certain shows or have an

social security payments when retiring, will have to be 66 and ten months to qualify. the higher age requirement takes effect in november. some good news for current recipients they will receive a 2.5% cost of living adjustment next year to account for inflation. >> skiers were caught on camera this weekend escaping ski lift chairs at a resort in colorado. the gondola lift at winter park resort crashed saturday, forcing the evacuation of more than 170 skiers and snowboarders. a spokesperson from the resort says people riding in the gondolas were lowered down by ropes over the course of roughly five hours. no injuries were reported. it's unclear what caused the crack in the lift. >> so fingers crossed. for those of you planning to spend your holidays on the slopes this year. if the forecast holds true, mother nature could be delivering a white christmas to tahoe. this is a look at the recent conditions at heavenly mountain resort, which picked up more than two feet of fresh snow

in the mountains. a winter weather advisory there. snow levels though above 6000ft. they'll maybe get a foot of snow above 6000ft, but it's going to be wet at the pass level. blue canyon will be rain. here are the temperatures from today. so pretty nice day. cooler around in the inland valleys. there's a lot of fog. little patchy fog out there. now it's valley fog, right. so it's not it's not going to stick around much longer because as that low pressure comes in tonight and then again on tuesday that will break up the inversion. so it is foggy along the coast right now. everybody's cloudy for the most part golden gate bridge. and you can tell it's a little damp out there. there's still some mist and drizzle system that we're experiencing now. and then system two, which is tuesday, sits back here and we're seeing that atmospheric river. it's here. all that moisture 1000 miles worth of it. easy, maybe 1800 miles all the way past the dateline. but it doesn't look, at least the models are keeping it pointed away from us with any kind of duration. which means
