>> from ktvu, fox two news. [music] this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning to you and thank you for joining us. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark i'm gasia mikaelian. >> it is monday, december 23rd. let's get outside. the air feels clean after that good shower we all had yesterday. >> and did you notice a little bit more on the mild side? yeah a little i did. yeah. not as cold. so that gives us a good indication we have an atmospheric river setting up. hi everybody. good morning to you. heading out the door this morning. live weather camera featuring jack london square and all of its christmas and hanukkah glory. but as you notice, it's a bit on the hazy side. that's because we do have areas of fog as well. temperatures are currently in the 50s. across the board. it is 62 degrees. however, in san jose. that's nice. that's where we should be for afternoon high temperatures. notice the visibility obscured in concord buchanan field, one mile and a quarter. two and a half in

livermore. otherwise one and a half in santa rosa. and half moon bay is socked in where you see the green highlighted area. that is something you need to know. today we have a coastal flood warning in effect right now right there all the way through tuesday, high noon. because of this, we do have this area of low pressure that has been pushing through the bay area, producing over a half an inch of rain in the north bay this morning alone. that is out of here, but behind it, i like to call it backwash. so you'll have a scattered shower. but boy, that system is churning up the swells. dangerous waves up to 35ft. please stay away from the water. do not turn your back on an angry ocean. so basically, what you need to know. cloudy with a random shower today. the bulk of the activity arrives tonight through your tuesday, setting the stage for a dry christmas. we'll talk about your afternoon highs and how much rain you should expect in your area. and dave. yeah, that is just in a couple of minutes. >> all right, roberta, i look forward to it. let's take a live look at traffic right now. a

quick look at interstate 880 as we speak. you can see for yourself traffic is moving, but the roads are wet. little slippery. be careful as you travel around the bay area on this monday morning. well, the holiday travel rush continues today. passengers are taking off to visit family and friends just two days before christmas. >> and as we saw with thanksgiving recently, this year end travel period is also expected to break records. let's head out to our amanda quintana. she's live at oakland's airport to share the scene at this earl. >> yeah, well good morning. it's actually not too bad right now. so if you take a look at the tsa line, we've been watching people just kind of walk right up, get ready to show their ids and head right in, which is usually a good sign if you get to the airport and you can just walk up right up there to tsa. but of course, we are expecting a record number of travelers this holiday season. triple a predicts more than 119 million americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between this
5:03 am
past saturday and january 1st. that's narrowly beating out 2019 numbers. now, here at the oakland airport, they're projecting 500,000 passengers will pass through this airport between last friday and january 6th. but they say it's pretty similar to what they saw last year here. most passengers that we've been speaking to this weekend say they don't really mind traveling during a time that they know that the airports will be busy. they also say that all the holiday decor here really does make a difference for them. it helps them get in the holiday spirit. and there is really a lot here at the oakland airport. >> our terminal services team has done an awesome job this year of making our terminals very festive for passengers. one special thing that we have going on for this holiday season is our gift wrapping station. so that is located in our terminal connector between terminals one and terminal two. we also have live musical performances that are occurring throughout the
5:04 am
holiday season. >> now today is the last day of that gift wrapping station. it's pretty cool because you shouldn't really go through tsa with your gifts already wrapped. if they have to check something, they might have to unwrap it and mess up all your hard work. so if you go through tsa, there's a table right there, and it has volunteers of people who work here at okay who said, you know, maybe i'm kind of good at gift wrapping and they will just wrap it for you, put a little bow on it, make sure it looks nice. so when you get to your destination, it is all ready for the person that you are gifting it to. live at the oakland airport. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> amanda thank you. oakland police are investigating a number of burglaries after a group of thieves hit several businesses this weekend. mr. crispy professional barbershop was among those hit. thieves, drove a vehicle through the front window and took off with the store's atm. the owner, donald smith, says he is disappointed that police officers did not respond. says a client waved down an officer who

happened to be stopped at the intersection outside more than eight hours after he called 911. the officer said the department was busy because nine other businesses were hit that same morning, all using the same vehicle seen by their surveillance cameras. >> this was just super ridiculous that they just left all of us here stranded all these hours and, you know, just to talk about it, you know, it's just it hurts for that reason. like, what about us? we're paying taxes, you know, providing services for the community. >> police confirm one of the cars seen here on surveillance video also rammed into a chevron gas station, the east bay restaurant supply and a 76 station. in that case, an employee fired shots and scared off the thieves. >> our time now. 505. there's a new report out from antioch police about a countywide effort to stop vehicle thefts. last week, 12 law enforcement agencies came together for a joint operation hosted by antioch police. they say it led

to more than 170 enforcement stops for recovered abandoned cars, seven felony arrests and eight misdemeanor arrests, as well as three recovered firearms. well, the age for getting a full retirement benefit from social security will be going up in the new year. next year, the full retirement age will jump to 66 years and ten months for people who were born in the year 1959. that's up two months from the previous requirement. the higher age requirement begins next november, and the age requirement will go up again to 67 years old in 2027. also next year, social security benefits will be going up. current recipients will get a 2.5% cost of living adjustment to account for inflation. all right. time is 506. i don't have to tell you. christmas is just two days away. several homeless shelters are gearing up to help people who are going through a very difficult time of the year.
5:07 am
>> today in richmond, the bay area rescue mission is giving meals to anyone who needs one. every night, more than 34,000 people in the bay area experience homelessness. with the help of the bay area rescue mission, comfort mensah escaped a domestic abuse situation, went on to earn a scholarship to travel to italy to study culinary arts. afterward, she brought those skills back to the place that gave her a fresh start. >> they have changed my life. you know, coming here as an abused relationship and join the program, going to school. it's a good place to be to get your life on track. >> the shelter has been helping people who are homeless and others since 1965. the turkey meal giveaway starts at nine this morning. the shelter also runs a daily food bank serving hundreds of food baskets every week out east. now, the antioch police department saved christmas for one family after thieves stole gifts from right under the tree last week. >> the police responded to a burglary where the suspects got away with all of the christmas gifts. the victim recently lost
5:08 am
her job. she couldn't replace the gifts for her family and young daughter. well, the police officer who responded to the burglary rallied her patrol team and with the generosity of the community, they replaced all of the stolen gifts. that victim was so happy. she thanked the police by giving them a great big batch of cookies. >> nice to see good work rewarded. let's turn things over to our meteorologist, roberto gonzalez. i have to say, you made such a great point. in the 4:00 hour, we might have a lot of out of town visitors who don't understand, you know, maybe how ocean beach works. or let's go see the big waves, and it could be dangerous. >> we're talking about 35 foot waves. how about that? and this extends all the way back to hawaii, where they are anticipating 50 foot waves. so stay away from the water. we're going to talk more about those advisories. but i was kind of getting in the holiday mood with that wonderful story from antioch. so i wanted to give you a christmas peek. look ahead at your weather. in fact, i believe

that on christmas and hanukkah we are going to have the abundance of dry conditions for the full day until the next system rolls in overnight into your thursday. until then, we do have a little bit of light rain out there, a sprinkle here and there. temperatures are very mild into the 50s. visibility is an issue at this hour due to fog and then the winds are slight. they only will pick up to about ten miles per hour today. we want a good breeze to kick out the fog. not going to happen really. so a hazy cloudy day today with a random shower. temperatures basically into the 60s across the board. we're going to talk about that coastal flood warning, the high surf and how much rain you can expect tonight through your tuesday. a lot to talk about is still ahead. garcia. thank you. >> roberta. 509 here at the 49ers quest for a sixth super bowl trophy. we'll have to wait another season. the defending nfc champs were officially eliminated from playoff contention yesterday, even before their 29 to 17 loss to the dolphins in miami. the l.a. rams and washington commanders won earlier in the day, ending san francisco's long shot of

making it to the postseason. quarterback brock purdy reflected on a disappointing year. >> just overall, just you start thinking about the plays that could have changed the game. you know, get some points up on the board, get some momentum. and so when you walk off the field, it's like, dang it. you know we had plenty of opportunities and we didn't finish. so yeah it hurt on third down. >> the niners now return home to take on the tough and talented detroit lions. one week from tonight. the lions are led by marin county native and former costar jared goff. 510 every year, it's the busiest travel week of the year as millions of people fly for the holidays. next, we have updates on delays and cancellations at the major bay area airports. >> plus, i'm the greatest of all time. >> indeed, sports fans still in shock, mourning the death of rickey henderson, a baseball hall of fame legend. we'll look back at rickey's life and

table. >> first of all, there is no strike because there are no amazon employees or drivers who are involved in this activity. what we have is a protest that has been created and manufactured by the teamsters to make a point. >> amazon is telling its customers they can still expect their packages to arrive on time, but many shipping experts warn there are certain to be at least minor delays in the deliveries as thousands of workers are on strike. and if you are still shopping for your holiday presents, you are you. are you. seriously, i feel like every year, every year. >> every year. >> yeah, at least you're consistent, dave. we know what to expect. dave is not alone by any means. the national retail federation says a majority of americans plan to do at least some christmas shopping in these days, just before the holidays. >> christmas eve night. >> always. >> ktvu is lamonica peters talked to shoppers in the south bay about their last minute rush to get gifts, skincare, body
