interstate 880 and the bay bridge toll plaza. not a lot of traffic on the bridge right now, but triple a predicts nearly 120 million americans will travel at least 50 miles for the holidays. that would be 3 million more than last year. and triple a predicts this week will be one of the busiest travel periods ever. ktvu amanda quintana talked to both airline passengers and drivers heading out for the holidays. >> reporter passengers are boarding their last minute flights to see loved ones. this family headed to rochester, new york. >> i just like the snow. it's like i seen snow. and at least during christmas in such a long time. so it's just it's nice being back there with it being so close to christmas day that can make travelers a little nervous, especially if they've had a bad experience in the past. >> two years ago, we didn't make it because of all the southwest and every other airline, so we were at sfo till 3 a.m. when they finally set the flights weren't going through. so

feeling better this year? yes. so far this is really nice. it's not too crowded. >> while the morning rush wasn't too bad, we are expecting a record number of travelers this holiday season. triple a predicts more than 119 million americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between this past saturday and january 1st, narrowly beating out 2019 numbers. nearly 90% of those travelers are driving, many of them likely already on their way. >> the one good thing about the day before christmas eve is that hopefully traffic isn't going to be that heavy. >> most people we spoke to filling up their tank monday morning were happy to not be hitting the road this holiday season. although low gas prices make a getaway tempting this station in orinda under $4 a gallon nationally, prices are lower than last year. >> i think it depends on where you go, right? so here are the gas prices appear to be high, but there's other stations where they're actually below $4. so it really depends on where you where you go. you have to be

selective. >> on the other hand flights are more expensive. still, tsa says for the last three days they've had about 2.8 million people go through checkpoints each day. sonia williams is flying for the first time in about 50 years, after usually driving down to l.a. for the holidays. >> we're all kind of nervous because, like i said, my first time in years, i don't know what direction i'm going in, where i'm going to, so if anybody can help me, help me. >> her outlook. be grateful you have family to visit and enjoy the ride. >> just be happy and treat everybody good and you can't go wrong with that. >> yeah, and you got to be patient. you know you might have oh patience number one. >> in oakland amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> new at noon christmas is just two days away, and several bay area homeless shelters are gearing up to help people who are going through a difficult time of year in the city of richmond. today, the bay area rescue mission is distributing food for holiday meals to families in need. this is the

mission's love without limits annual christmas turkey and meal giveaway. organizers say there is a growing need for help. >> you can see there's a growing need. you can see through our line. we have all colors, all ages. we have families, we have seniors. so the need is definitely grown. and you can tell that people you know, it takes a lot to come in the rain and just pick up a turkey. so people really need it. and so we're serving people who are very grateful today for what they're being blessed with. >> the bay area rescue mission will also be serving christmas dinner with all the fixings through christmas night. the organization regularly serves 4000 meals a day to the homeless in richmond. the antioch police department saved christmas for a family who had their gifts stolen by thieves. police say they responded to a burglary last week. the suspects escaped with all the gifts. the victim had recently lost her job and was unable to replace the gifts for her family and young daughter. the officer who responded to the burglary rallied her patrol team and with the generosity of the community,

they were able to replace all the stolen gifts. the victim was incredibly grateful for the help from officers. she thanked them with a batch of cookies. well, none of this story. luigi mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a united health care ceo, brian thompson, made his first new york court appearance this morning. mangione was escorted into the courtroom, where he was arraigned on charges including multiple counts of murder and murder as an act of terrorism. he pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. mangione's attorney expressed concerns during the hearing about her client's ability to obtain a fair trial. she specifically mentioned new york mayor eric adams presence last week, when mangione was extradited to manhattan from pennsylvania. >> he has a right to a fair trial. and these and i just want to put on the record statements that the mayor made publicly about my client. nothing saying alleged, for example. and he said i wanted to send a strong message with the police commissioner that we're leading from the front. i'm not going to just allow him to come into our city. i wanted to look him in the eye and state you carried

out this terrorist act in my city. >> mangione's next court date has been set for february 21st. he's also facing a murder charge which carries his death penalty if found guilty. just days before christmas, president biden commuted the death sentences of nearly every inmate on federal death row. as fox's mike emanuel reports, the move comes ahead of president elect donald trump's expected plan to resume federal capital punishment, with his time in office coming to a close, president joe biden is using his executive power to shape his judicial legacy. >> announcing monday he's commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 prisoners currently sitting on federal death row. the inmates, all men convicted of murder, will now serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. >> he didn't give commutations on the death penalty to the three death penalty or death row inmates who were dealt with by the biden justice department and

the obama biden justice department. >> in a statement, the president said he condemns these murders and grieves for the victims and their families, but added, quote, in good conscience, i cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that i halted. the president placed a moratorium on federal executions in 2021. president elect donald trump has promised to reinstate the death penalty, prompting many, including pope francis, to urge biden to commute the sentences. >> there are some real questions about the fairness and the process of the death penalty in the united states. >> there is no legacy a president should seek. >> three men will remain on federal death row robert bowers, who killed 11 people at the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. dylann roof, the white supremacist who killed nine black parishioners at a charleston, south carolina, church. and dzhokhar tsarnaev, one of the two boston marathon bombers. 13 federal executions were carried out during donald trump's first term in office,

ending a nearly 20 year pause on capital punishment. in washington, mike emanuel, ktvu, fox two news. >> the house ethics committee is formally accusing former congressman matt gaetz of regularly paying women for sex. those payments included money that went to a teenage girl back in 2017. the house panel released this long awaited bipartisan report earlier this morning. it includes explicit details of alleged sex filled parties at gaetz is said to have taken part in during his days as a florida lawmaker. gaetz withdrew himself from consideration as president elect trump's nominee for attorney general last month due to the scandal. gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. he has never been charged with a crime. no official word yet on whether a nationwide starbucks strike is coming to the bay area. starbucks workers united says its strike has grown to 12 cities such as boston, dallas and portland, oregon. they say follow baristas who walked off their jobs late last week in los

angeles, seattle and chicago. the union accuses the coffeehouse giant of failing to meet its demands for immediate and future pay raises. the union is asking for a 77% raise over the life of a new three year contract proposal. >> out here, just fighting for ourselves. we're fighting for baristas nationwide, and we're fighting for low paid work to no longer be considered low paid work. we want to be able to live and be in the cities that we work in. >> starbucks says it's focused on making the employee experience better while offering a competitive average pay of $18 an hour with benefits. the company also says there hasn't been any significant impacts to their store operations since the start of the strike. the two new board members in the west contra costa unified school district have now been sworn into office, along with a reelected incumbent. that swearing in ceremony took place last week during the final board meeting of the year. the board faces a very busy year in 2025, as members deal with the many problems facing the school district. but their top

priority, they say, will be hiring a permanent superintendent following the retirement of school chief chris hurst in october. a big deal in the automobile world. the proposed merger that would lead to the third largest automaker on the planet and a wide range of emotions, can come out during the holiday season. a local therapist on dealing with the pressures of this time of the year, and we'll give you a rundown on the rain soaking the bay area right now. but it doesn't compare to what's coming late tonight and tomorrow morning. roberto onzalez will join us

largest car company. both carmakers say they signed a memorandum of understanding today and that smaller nissan alliance member mitsubishi motors also agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses. honda will initially lead the new management, retaining the principals and brands of each company. japanese car companies are facing increasing competition from japanese automakers, especially in the global ev market. the container store is now filing for bankruptcy. the popular organization store has locations throughout the bay area, but the company says it is not planning to close any location or stop sales on its website during the bankruptcy filing process, which is expected to take a little over a month. court documents show the chain has about $230

million in debt, but is set to receive a $40 million cash injection. one of america's best, biggest and best known retail chains is going out of business after 40 years. party city reportedly plans to close down more than 700 stores across the country in late february. dozens of them are here in the bay area. the news stunned many local party city customers who were stocking up on supplies for the holidays. >> surprised when i walked in here that there was like, there's not many aisles of anything. >> i think it kind of sucks because it's kind of cool. you come here one stop shop, get all the stuff you need, and you're out of there. >> news of these closures comes nearly two years after party city first filed for bankruptcy. the company has been struggling to stay in business as more customers shop online. party city was also facing financial challenges due to debt and inflation. still, some scattered showers in parts of the bay are. as you look live at the oakland estuary this evening or this afternoon, rather, more rainfall is going to be expected tonight

and tomorrow. here's roberto gonzalez with more on that. >> did you hear the raindrops on the rooftops? we had measurable precipitation in the overnight hours. in fact, this system really did overachieve with anywhere from a quarter of an inch of rainfall in the eastern portion of our bay area to nearly three quarters of an inch in the wailea of the north bay. that would be kentfield. look at concord. that's measurable. precip over a quarter of an inch. san francisco approaching 4/10 of an inch of rain. meanwhile, dense fog patchy across the bay area. mostly cloudy skies. hints of sunshine today, with heavier rain arriving later tonight after midnight. that will lead to a dicey tuesday. we're talking about christmas eve with rain, the potential of thunderstorm activity, gusty winds as well that will take down some trees and that is notable. do not park under any trees all week long. trees will be coming down and then on christmas day all is calm, all is somewhat bright. we will have hints of sunshine

under a partly cloudy sky with increasing clouds during the late afternoon. high surf anywhere from hawaii all the way to the west coast. we're talking about a high surf warning in effect 35 to 40ft swells. yes, 40ft at mavericks. this is extremely dangerous. please do not hang out at the beaches today, tomorrow or even into your wednesday with these waves lapping on shore and with the impending rain showers, the national weather service has issued a coastal flood warning, so we do anticipate some flooding near local piers, the beaches and parkways as well. now, meanwhile, we have a series of storms. it's a parade of storms, one right after another. this is your only break right about here. that's your christmas day, your hanukkah day before this next system rolls in for your thursday and friday. and boy, is that taking form and looking pretty mighty. futurecast. let's go ahead and track this storm together. just a couple of hit and miss showers throughout the day today. nothing really measurable and

pretty much north of the golden gate bridge or along the immediate seashore. and then watch the clock. look at this. that's the frontal boundary. and as it digs to the south and then gradually lifts to the east, we will have plentiful rain showers in the overnight hours. and then for your morning commute. now watch the clock tick on by and by the early afternoon hours. in the mid afternoon hours we begin to see some clearing as far as the precipitation is concerned. but there's a lot of instability and with the unsettled air mass, that's when we could see a thunderstorm pop at any point of the day. and some of these thunderstorms could be severe. again with those gusty winds. here you are with sunup on wednesday morning, 722 partly cloudy conditions. clouds thicken late day into the evening hours, but it's going to be dry for christmas and on hanukkah. okay, with this first system, we're expecting another at least half inch of rain in san francisco and across the santa clara valley. livermore. same drill and heavier amounts

to the north. again, these numbers could change, and probably will. it's been just too warm for the snow in tahoe, but that's going to change tomorrow. we have a winter weather watch in effect for the greater lake tahoe area. we're expecting 5 to 10in of snow down to 6000ft, about 18in of snow above 8000ft. and look at that overnight low temperature on christmas eve. very cold. bitterly cold for santa's arrival. if you're traveling out of town, we've got rain. to the north. we have sunshine to the south in southern california, and a wind advisory in place for the palm springs area. but 80 degrees. wow. our temperatures above average 71 degrees in san jose, when typically we should be right around 60 degrees this time of the year. low 60s around vallejo, benicia, martinez, and american canyon, mid 60s. peninsula. mighty warm until this system rolls in and the temperatures begin to drop throughout midweek christmas day

spent most of his career with the a's. he's the only player in history with more than 1000 stolen bases. henderson was inducted into baseball's hall of fame back in 2009, in his first year of eligibility. this fall, i had the opportunity to sit down with henderson ahead of the a's final game in oakland. we talked about several topics, including the team's future and his humble beginnings, sneaking into the coliseum as a kid to catch ball games. >> you know, we was going out there maybe just to get a ball. you know, we didn't get a ball or something that they can give us. it was a joyful time for us. it was so wonderful that i got the opportunity to get drafted by the a's and then became the a's player and played in that stadium, and. >> we are awaiting official word on how the a's and major league baseball will honor henderson next season. his greatness transcended sports, too. steph curry said, quote, growing up as an adult in the bay area, especially what he did in oakland, it resonates for me in terms of representing the bay at

a legendary, iconic level. nobody like him. long time san francisco giants public address announcer and radio show host renel brooks-moon received a key to the city for her accomplishments. mayor london breed made that presentation at city hall. brooks-moon was a familiar voice on kmel radio. she also made history as the first black woman to be a public address announcer in major league baseball. the san francisco native says she hopes many others will follow in her footsteps. >> it is only hope and pray that my time in the studio and in the booth has inspired particularly young people of color, young women of color to go for it, to go for your dreams, even if they seem to be the impossible dream. yes. impossible dreams can come true. >> the mayor also praised brooks-moon for her tireless charitable work with the furry

to pass through between last friday and january 6th, which is pretty similar to what it saw last year. san jose police are releasing new details about a recent retail theft bust. they shared these photos from that bust, where several people went into two stores at a mall in west san jose over the weekend. and they were carrying this equipment, which is used to bypass retail theft sensors. police arrested three people when they arrived. this unregistered gun was found on one of the suspects. a 15 year old girl. the teen was booked at juvenile hall and two adults were booked into jail for the incident. oakland police are investigating several burglaries after thieves hit several businesses over the weekend. one of the businesses hit was mister crispy professional barbershop, where thieves drove a car right through the front window, stole an atm, then took off. donald smith, the owner of the barbershop, says he is disappointed that oakland police did not respond for more than eight hours. authorities said they were busy investigating nine other burglaries that same morning, all using the same

vehicles seen by surveillance cameras. >> this was just super ridiculous that they just left all of us here stranded all these hours and, you know, just to talk about it, you know, it's just it hurts for that reason. like, what about us? we're paying taxes, you know, providing services for the community. >> police confirmed that a car also rammed into a chevron gas station and east bay restaurant supply store and a 76 gas station where an employee fired shots, scaring off the thieves. a beloved family run donut shop in the east bay has closed for good after nearly 40 years in business. longtime customers lined up early sunday morning outside rudy's donut house in castro valley. everyone there waiting to say their final goodbye to the shop's owners, sisters, angela decoteau and gina alfaro, have been working at the shop since they were teens, and their father, rudy, was in charge. >> i just got emotional. she

told me not to cry. it just. it's bittersweet. of course, we've been around for so long and we're going to miss not the work. definitely the community. >> rudy's is always been special for us. i grew up going here. we used to walk here every sunday. >> on its final sunday, donuts sold out within three hours. but people stayed for the conversation and even signed a memory book. as the holidays approach, domestic violence shelters and hotlines are bracing for an annual surge in calls. experts say their calls increased 20% in december. earlier on mornings on two, we spoke with a psychotherapist who says the holidays bring additional stressors that don't excuse domestic violence but can contribute to it. >> the stress level is so high it is unbelievable. you have people who are having economic challenges. you have people who are fired from jobs. you have people who are at the end of their rope. >> the rate of domestic violence is highest among women who are

black, asian, minority and immigrants too. but happens among people across all ethnic and economic backgrounds. >> domestic violence occurs in all socioeconomic levels upper class, upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class, poverty level. it has no specific area that it specializes in. and so the pandemic of domestic violence during the holidays is huge. >> according to experts, more than 12 million people a year experience abuse in the united states. well, police in new york city have arrested a man accused of a terrible attack being described as, quote, depraved behavior. investigators say the 33 year old from guatemala, for unknown reasons, intentionally set a woman passenger on fire on board of a subway train at a station in coney island. that's the suspect there. the victim was engulfed in flames in seconds. police were patrolling the station when they smelled smoke and arrived shortly afterwards, but could not save that woman. transit officers

eventually tracked down the suspect. new york city's mayor called the incident, quote, heinous senseless killing. president elect trump has major political rallies since his victory in the november election. nearly seven weeks ago. mr. trump spoke for more than an hour before thousands of supporters in phoenix last night. the president elect says his victory on november 5th was also a big win for the republican party. >> not only did we reclaim the white house, we also took back the u.s. senate and we won the largest popular vote majority for house republicans in a presidential year since 1928. that's a pretty good thing. >> the president elect also lavished praise on his cabinet picks and predicted they will all win senate confirmation. the president elect says he'd like to keep tiktok available for use in the country, at least for a little while longer. that's after he says he received billions of views on tiktok during his presidential campaign. a law passed by the

senate in april requires tiktok's china based parent company, bytedance, to sell the app to an american company or face a ban next month. tiktok has challenged the law, saying it violates free speech rights. the supreme court will hear tiktok's case on january 10th, just nine days before it is set to be banned across the country. president elect trump says he wants to regain control of the panama canal. fox's grady trimble has more on that. and what other diplomatic changes the incoming president says he wants to make when he takes office. >> we're being ripped off at the panama canal like we're being ripped off everywhere else. >> president elect donald trump doubling down on threats to regain control of the panama canal, telling supporters during a rally in arizona sunday the united states, quote, foolishly ceded control to its central american ally. trump maintains the 51 mile waterway that former president jimmy carter agreed to gradually hand over to panama in the late 70s is vital to the united states economic and security interests. adding on truth social, the fees being

charged by panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to panama by the u.s. if the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the panama canal be returned to the united states of america in full, quickly and without question. >> i'm not going to stand for it. >> trump's threats underscoring a shift in u.s. diplomacy as the president elect is also signaling he wants to make another play to control greenland. and in recent weeks, trump has repeatedly mused about turning canada into a u.s. state. >> the reality is, we're going to continue to work constructively with the incoming administration. >> l canal no tiene control. >> meanwhile, panama's president, in a video statement responded to trump's latest threat, saying, quote, every square meter of the panama canal and its adjacent areas belong to panama and will continue

belonging to panama. president elect responded on truth social, saying, quote, we'll see about that. the inauguration is just 28 days away at the white house. grady trimble ktvu, fox two news. >> a new report finds more high school students nationwide are graduating as multilingual. according to data gathered by education week, all 50 states and the district of columbia now award seals of biliteracy for students who've mastered more than one language. the number of high school seniors graduating with the seal grew from nearly 148,000 in the 20 2122 school year to about 159,000 the next school year. the number of languages mastered along english grew from 127 to 143. the state of california is moving another step closer toward requiring basic reading tests for young children. a panel of literacy experts have come up with a test that is designed to detect reading difficulties among students from kindergarten to second grade. that's in

is reporting an alarming rise in the number of valley fever cases across the state. the potentially deadly respiratory infection is caused by inhaling fungal spores found in soil. the symptoms include cough, fever and severe chest pain. the agency found there was a dramatic increase in cases in six bay area counties during the past year. the largest increase was in monterey county, where there was an increase of roughly 200% due to the large number of farm workers in the region. some relief could be coming for those who suffer from sleep apnea. the fda has expanded its approval of weight loss drug ssep bound to help treat obstructive sleep apnea in obese adults. this move makes it the first medication for the disorder, which affects about 39 million people nationwide. the approval could also prompt insurance companies to cover the cost of the drug, as many have been reluctant to cover the expense in the past. a new study shows that weight loss drugs such as ozempic and wegovy aren't just causing people to lose weight. research from the

over a quarter of an inch of rain. and look at san francisco coming in at nearly 4/10 of an inch of rain around the peninsula and santa clara valley, we saw less than a 10th of an inch. now, what's in your forecast? we do have areas of patchy, dense fog today under mostly cloudy skies and few sunny breaks. and tonight, heavier rain showers push into the bay area with gusty winds as well, and that will lead to the potential of a thunderstorm tomorrow for your tuesday. it's going to be a dicey day tomorrow. a rain out during the morning, but then improving conditions during the mid-afternoon hours, and then on your christmas day and hanukkah. partly cloudy with increasing cloud cover. boy, have you heard the news about the coastline? please stay away from the beaches. we have a high surf warning. in effect, some of these waves, these swells are building up to 35 and 40ft. 40ft at mavericks. so surely with this kind of dangerous condition along the seashore, these waves are lapping on shore. and that is why the national weather service has issued a coastal

flood warning for just about the entire northern california coastline. and this means that we will see some ponding and some flooding near our piers and also our parkways. so we have a number of storms. we had the one that rolled through last night, the secondary one right here, right now, pushing up against that northwestern quadrant of the state of california. this is the only break we have, but we still have that fetch of moisture. this is your christmas day. and then behind me here is the third system. and that third one, this big one is going to roll in again on thursday and on friday. so let's track tonight's storm. here we are during our afternoon hours. just a hit and miss. scattered light shower, primarily coastside and north bay. nothing really measurable. it's this. this is the frontal boundary associated with this incoming system. it's going to override the warm air mass we have in place right now with some cooler air mass. and that's why i'm concerned with that potential of thunderstorms containing small hail and lightning. so that blows through

the north bay at 2:00 in the morning. it quickly dives in throughout the central portion of our bay area by the morning commute, and digs across the santa clara valley towards morgan hill and gilroy before lifting in an easterly direction. notice we begin to clear out during the afternoon hours, but remember, there's a lot of instability in the atmosphere, so that's what could trigger a thunderstorm at any point of the day. we begin to clear out on tuesday night, and that's going to lead to a cold tuesday evening, tuesday, overnight, christmas eve into your christmas day due to the passage of that cold front. now, meanwhile, check this out. here's your christmas. partly to mostly cloudy skies, increasing clouds, late day. now. meanwhile, this next system overnight. over a half an inch of rain expected. how does that shape up for the tahoe area? we have a winter weather watch in effect for christmas eve. we're talking about up to ten inches of snow down to 6200ft. we're talking about 18in of snow above 8000ft. and then that will set

chairlift today, monday, december 23rd, 2020. for the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident. the chronicle is reporting that several skiers posted on social media about two quad chairs stacked together, caused passengers to fall. one person on reddit said the chair slid backward, causing those in the front to fall off. we're checking the story. we'll have more updates on ktvu.com and in our newscast a little later on. well, the kilauea volcano on hawaii's big island has roared back to life. the eruption began early this morning at about 4 a.m. our time. the u.s. geological service says the molten activity is limited to within the volcano's caldera, but there is concern about gases to people living downwind of the volcano. kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and most recently erupted back in september. scientists and astronomers are hoping santa claus comes a day early this year. that's because on christmas eve, a nasa spacecraft will pass closer to the center

of our solar system than any human made object ever has. fox's rebecca castor tells us more about this mission to touch the sun. three. two. >> one. >> hurtling towards earth's closest star at an astonishing 430,000mph, nasa's parker solar probe is on a mission to better understand the mysteries of the sun. >> everything that our sun does affects us here on earth. >> launched back in 2018, parker's journey is taking it about 90 million miles from earth and will come within 4 million miles of the sun's surface. that sounds pretty far, but if you think about a football field, if you put the earth at one end zone and the sun at the other end zone, it's going to make it to the four yard line of the sun. parker is equipped with a state of the art heat shield that will somehow keep its scientific equipment at room temperature, even though it will endure temperatures exceeding 1 million degrees as it approaches the sun's outermost atmosphere, or corona.

organization says someone donated a south african krugerrand gold coin to one of its red kettles outside of a grocery store on saturday. the salvation army says the coins are prized for their purity and value. that one ounce coin is worth thousands of dollars. the folks at the north american aerospace defense command are getting ready for santa's annual trek around the globe. norad first started tracking the jolly old saint nick, thanks to a mistake in a newspaper ad back in 1955. volunteers helped man the phones every year on christmas eve, letting kids know where santa is. and the kids asked them to check the list to see if they're naughty or nice. >> i'll tell them where santa is, and then you may get a little question from someone that is saying, well, when's santa going to go to my house? and, you know, and or am i on the naughty list or the, the nice list and all the kids i've ever had have always been on the nice list.
