4:00 pm
packing bay area airports today and getting on the roads to visit family and friends. we're live with an update on the situation at sfo. [music] >> plus a stunning sight in santa cruz where part of the city's wharf collapsed into the ocean this afternoon during high surf. several people who were on the pier had to be rescued from the water. [music] >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is the four. >> the whole front just fell off. >> onlookers in disbelief after powerful waves slammed the santa cruz municipal wharf today, causing a portion of it to give way. that 150 foot section had already been closed as crews were repairing previous storm damage. welcome everyone to the four this afternoon. >> i'm alex savage and i'm christien kafton. first responders rescued two people from the water who were on that collapsed portion of the wharf.
4:01 pm
authorities say fortunately, there were no serious injuries. jesse gary joining us now live. jesse, what can you tell us about this incident? >> christian, good evening to you. and as the sun is beginning to set here, there are fears that the wharf behind me, which is now 150ft shorter, could sustain more damage with the next storm that is already on its way. this, after large, strong swells today, did major damage. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> around 1230 this afternoon. witnesses say they saw the end of the iconic santa cruz wharf swaying with each large wave. then the sound of wood crackling, followed by a 150 foot section that was already closed, collapsing into the pacific ocean. >> we noticed that the pier was swaying a lot, and it was. we heard a lot of cracking, but we didn't think much of it. and then all of a sudden it
4:02 pm
literally it all fell into the water and like there was people on it as well. a lot of construction workers, they were on the pier and it fell into the water and it sounded like thunder. pretty scary because we thought the pier was cracking like under us when we were running. so we just thought like we were in a movie, like like running away from the cracks and stuff. >> santa cruz city officials say three people, one city project manager and two contract engineers were checking that section of wharf because it was being renovated due to damage sustained over the past two winters worth of storms. all three men went into the water. however, the fire chief says his department had personnel already pre-positioned because of large swells and the number of surfers who were out in the water earlier in the day. those first responders rescued two of the victims, the third self rescued. >> given the circumstances, we had our engineer, our engineering team and our wharf crew on site monitoring minute
4:03 pm
by minute, we made the decision that based on our forecasting models, it would be safe to do so today with constant monitoring. but again, this was another example of how, despite our best predictions, talking with our weather experts, mother nature can surprise us. >> we are anticipating that what is coming towards us is more serious than what was there this morning. this is going to be high tide at a time when we have king tides and all kinds of other activities out there in the pacific ocean. >> the santa cruz wharf closed indefinitely due to the collapse, and city officials warn people to stay out of the ocean due to debris that still floating in the water. we're talking about large pilings that can injure or possibly kill if they hit a person. the main beach, cowell's beach, both closed. also seabright getting word that that town closing its beaches and capitola bracing for possible flooding this evening as high tide moves in. we're
4:04 pm
live in santa cruz this afternoon. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. kristen, back to you in oakland. >> jesse, you were talking about the debris there, wondering if that debris field is expanding. right. it's not going to all stay in one space. presumably it's going to expand out and pose a wider risk. >> so it's a great question, kristen. so there was a bathroom on that portion that fell into the ocean that the construction workers and other people would use. also, dolphin, the dolphin restaurant that also was in that section that all went into the ocean. and we saw the bathroom pushed by the waves, maybe, i don't know, a quarter mile or so down the coast, closer to where the amusement park is. so the waves are pushing all of that debris out in the ocean. and that's why officials say, do not go into the water. you know, you have a lot of surfers that happened this morning because the swells are so large. the surfers like moth to a flame. they come immediately and want to get in the water. they don't
4:05 pm
want you to do that because these pylons, pilings could hit you and possibly kill you because they're so large and the water is so rough. >> yeah. all that debris really posing a threat to anyone who is anywhere near the water. a remarkable scene in santa cruz today. jesse gary, live on the scene for us. jesse. thank you. obviously, all of this a result of the series of storms that we are seeing hitting the coast this week, and that's leading to dangerously high surf, high surf warnings in place here. this is a live look at the scene just up the coast from santa cruz there in pacifica. and you can see we have seen some large swells in this area as well as you would imagine. absolutely. >> you can see those waves crashing right there. let's bring in meteorologist rosemary oroczo. rosemary, you said that this is just the beginning or we're somewhere in the middle of the story. this is nowhere near the end. >> you're right. we do have this to go. one more day. still, guys. and those colossal waves. obviously very powerful, not only in the water, but on the shore as well. those large breaking waves could easily pull
4:06 pm
someone out to sea. so definitely something to be aware of. today is going to be worse than what we're expecting for tomorrow. in any event, some of those larger sets this afternoon could reach 60ft. so it is definitely worth noting, as we have been talking about it now for more than 24 hours or so as the advisory began over the weekend. here is a look at a little bit of sunshine as we await the next storm. that is actually a beautiful view. scattered showers reported over the bay area this afternoon, but the brunt of the storm still offshore. here's a look at storm tracker two. some of the drizzle, the few sprinkles falling below the radar beam. a little tough to tell exactly where it is, but it's out there. and as we head over towards the sierra, this winter weather advisory begins tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. and will go until 7 p.m. over the weekend. no advisories. the snow levels were way too high. this system is going to drop snow levels down to about 6000ft, so it will impact i-80 as well as highway 50. if you're traveling up just
4:07 pm
before the holiday, you will have that winter travel to deal with. meanwhile, here's a view of the next system that is bringing wet weather to the pacific northwest. northern california. the front back in here is expected to roll ashore during the overnight hours for us. here's a look at the timing expected for tonight into tomorrow morning. notice by two 3:00 in the morning. it is really coming down over lake county as well as the north bay. we could see thunderstorms rolling through here, as well as those oranges and reds, indicating that then by about 3 or 4:00 in the morning, it's stretching into the central bay. and by 5:00 in the morning or so, it's stretching into the south bay. this is going to be a slick, hectic, hazardous morning commute tomorrow. the rain is expected to remain steady and heavy through the morning hours, but it is a quick moving storm. here's a look at 11 a.m, and we are beginning to see the back end of this and for the rest of christmas eve, as well as christmas day and hanukkah, we are looking at dry weather, a better look at the rainfall
4:08 pm
amounts expected with this, as well as the snow and what we can expect in through the holiday and beyond. coming up. >> all right, rosemary, we will catch up with you in just a little bit. the wet weather this week could affect your holiday travel plans. millions of people are flying to see loved ones, and that means bay area airports, as you might imagine, are very busy. taking a live look right now at sfo, where there have been dozens of delays and at least one cancellation today, according to flightaware. we will have more on that coming up, and many people are packing up the car and driving to their holiday destinations. >> let's give you a live look here at the eastshore freeway coming through emeryville and the berkeley area here, and you can see things really stacked up in both directions, especially for folks who are traveling eastbound this afternoon. well, holiday travel this year is expected to break records, but those who are driving will likely get a break when they fill up. >> as fox's brooke taylor reports from dallas, gas prices are actually lower than they were a year ago. >> the travel rush is officially
4:09 pm
on. with christmas just two days away, millions of americans are heading to the roads and the skies, making their way home for the holidays. >> i remember last christmas waiting in the line to get through through tsa. it was two hours and it was at four in the morning. so i decided that i would come very early. >> major metro areas throughout the state will have extra congestion, holiday travelers hitting the road, trying to get to their destination. >> travel experts at triple a expect a record breaking number of americans to travel this holiday break. >> it was a lot going on, and it didn't help that we were a little bit behind because of delays, but we're here. it was a great vacation. >> an estimated 119 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the 12 day stretch before christmas and after new year's. that's more than 3 million more travelers than last year, topping the previous record high set five years ago. >> pre-pandemic come early,
4:10 pm
super early, and monday, december 23rd could be the busiest of all. >> i usually like to get here like, you know, pretty decently early, but with added crowds come added risks, insurance companies nationwide warn it's also the most dangerous day to drive. >> don't risk it. don't push it because you just have this mind that i have to get there no matter what. >> and if you're planning on driving this holiday season, a little bit of good news for you. the national average for gas is some of its lowest since the pre pandemic numbers in dallas. i'm brooke taylor, fox news. >> all right let's talk more about the holiday travel rush. and to do that we bring in doug yakel spokesperson for sfo. doug thank you for the time today. i know obviously, a busy day for you and your colleagues at the airport. we talked in the lead in here that we have storms in this part of the country, storms elsewhere in the country, all of that leading to some delays and cancellations. what is the situation this afternoon at sfo for folks who may have flights later in the day or tomorrow? >> hi alex, thanks for having
4:11 pm
me. we are seeing a bit of recovery, obviously. earlier today we started with some low clouds and fog that led to a delay program really from chicago west. flights were affected. transcon international not affected. still some residual delays. right now a total of 180 flights experiencing a delay, averaging about 30 minutes. that's about 20% of our flights today. so starting to get into a bit of a recovery. but as you alluded to, wet weather back tomorrow morning. so we might see a repeat of this tomorrow morning. >> and doug, as we can expect, today is one of those big travel days. are we at the peak already or is the peak tomorrow? where are we in terms of that peak that people want to try to avoid? >> yeah, we're we're at about the peak right now pushing 160,000 in and out today at sfo. we will probably see those numbers taper off just a little bit tomorrow. real busy tomorrow morning from about 6 a.m. to noon. but then as we get into the afternoon hours, we'll start
4:12 pm
to see a tapering off a little bit, and then it'll get quiet as we go into the holiday. >> all right. i was reading that you're forecasting to have what would be a huge increase in the number of holiday travelers between thanksgiving and new year's this year. are you are we on track to see a significant increase in air travel coming through sfo this holiday season compared to last year? >> yeah, we're we're up about 15% compared to last year. we're at about 98% of pre-pandemic levels. so we're getting ever so close to what we saw back in 2019 and the last couple of days here at sfo. among the top ten busiest days we've seen in all of 2024. so we do recommend allowing that extra time. get here at least two hours prior for domestic flight, three hours for international. the ultimate luxury is time today. >> yeah. and doug one one last area here. you talked about those delays. about 180 or so, if i remember correctly. but if i, if i read flightaware
4:13 pm
correctly, it looks like 75 of those were at sfo. so given the nature of air travel, how many airports are reliant on getting crews and personnel and everything everywhere? wondering what your forecast is for our west coast looking? because a lot of the travel that we're going to see are people traveling to los angeles or up to seattle or portland, a lot of that west coast travel. how is that looking at this hour? >> yeah, so that's really the sector that is seeing that residual delays from the earlier low clouds and fog. and you're right, about 30% of all of our flying is between here and the los angeles basin. a lot of times when we do see delays, it is impacting those short haul flights along the west coast, just by nature of the fact that there's so much more frequency on those markets. the good news is airlines are starting to make up some of the time. earlier today we were seeing delays averaging 45 to 60 minutes. that's now down to 25 30 minutes. so they are managing to shave that off and get back to on time. >> all right. that's good to
4:14 pm
hear that. there is a recovery underway at sfo after some delays earlier in the day. obviously still a busy, busy week ahead here for all of you, doug yakel from sfo. we appreciate the time. happy holidays. >> same to you. thank you. >> all right. coming up this afternoon here on the for the bay area. joining with the baseball world in mourning the death of one of the greats. >> yeah. we will have the very latest on how hall of famer and gendary base stealer rickey he erson

4:17 pm
people come out here leaving so many tributes behind. you see the number of bouquets of flowers, the 24 balloons. here, we see candles on the ground and a lot more over there, right on the fence, actually, up to the coliseum. everyone here says that they are just trying to show a little bit of a tribute, a little bit of love for someone they say has gone way too soon, and now they are asking for a more permanent memorial to be placed somewhere in the city of oakland. don pepper puts down a red flower on a wall dedicated to the late legend rickey henderson. >> i wanted to pay tribute to him as a human being who lost his life way too young. >> her favorite memory? henderson showing kindness to both her and her son at a meet and greet. >> we got up to the front of the line. he got rickey's autograph. rickey saw me with my camera and he said, come over here, son. let's get a photo for mom. so he gave us both. that's the kind of man he was. >> the man of steel, known for being the best at stealing bases, also stole the hearts of
4:18 pm
people in oakland who are already heartbroken about losing the a's to sacramento and las vegas. >> you almost can't believe it's true. you almost can't believe your team left, and you almost can't believe that the greatest person that ever played on that team also left. you know, way too young. >> he meant a lot to my team, and i look up to that. and it just it's a sad thing, you know? seeing the a's leave and now someone who meant so much to that franchise also leave. >> fans talk to one another, sharing memories and memorabilia. >> well, this year, 40 years old man. look at the clean jersey for him. 40 years old, you know. and i wear it every once in a while because i want to keep it clean. >> it's why they expect oakland city council members to do something to honor henderson's memory permanently. councilman dan cobb expects that to happen soon. >> i think there's no doubt that we should name. if not, you know, 1 or 2 things after rickey henderson. you know, someone someone needs to, you know, put
4:19 pm
together a small working group of people to figure out what are those best things. >> i'd love to see a statue out in front of here or city hall. >> name a street. at least you know rickey henderson boulevard. >> i know there's a lot of talk about what to call the oakland international airport. oakland. you know, rh airport, you know. >> and many of the fans i talked to today say they're so shocked by this death, not just because death is unpredictable and naturally something that is bound to happen, but more so because they just saw rickey henderson here at the coliseum two months ago playing in a softball charity games, throwing out the first pitch for the oakland a's last home game here at the coliseum. he died 65 years old. his 66th birthday is coming up this christmas. live at the oakland coliseum. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, james definitely gone way too soon. i remember watching him. you never forget watching rickey henderson play. he was so fast and such an amazing player. real team

charitable work. >> the 49ers quest for a sixth super bowl trophy will have to wait for another season. the defending nfc champs were officially eliminated from playoff contention yesterday, even before their 29 to 17 loss to the miami dolphins. the la rams and washington commanders won earlier in the day, which ended san francisco's long shot hopes of making it to the postseason. quarterback brock purdy reflected on what happened. >> overall, just you start thinking about the plays that could have changed the game. you know, get some points up on the board, get some momentum. and so when you walk off the field, it's like, dang it. you know we had plenty of opportunities and we didn't finish. so yeah it hurt. >> despite the down year, many fans on social media are saying they are hopeful for next year when more key players return from their injuries. the niners now return home to take on the tough and talented detroit

in an orange jumpsuit and shackles. his legal team says this is just one example of why they don't think he's going to get a fair trial in new york city. >> he was on display for everyone to see in the biggest staged perp walk i've ever seen in my career. it was absolutely unnecessary. >> so that's just on the state charges. but mangione could be back in federal court again in the coming days once we get an indictment there. investigators say if he's found guilty in that case, he could face the death penalty. reporting in new york city. i'm alexis mcadams, fox news. >> death penalty opponents and victims relatives are reacting to president biden's death row commutations. the president today converted the sentences of 37 of 40 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment, without the possibility of parole. some victims families are angry, saying the move undermines the federal justice system. the decision is meant to stop president elect trump from restarting stalled executions once he takes office. 13 were

allegations and tried unsuccessfully this morning in court to get a restraining order to stop the release of that report. it summarizes the committee's investigation. the panel accuses gates of regularly paying for sex, including with a 17 year old girl, along with buying and using illegal drugs. some lawmakers say the release of this report could have unwanted consequences. >> house has to hold itself to a higher ethical standard. >> this will probably now start a war of other reports that are going on, on members to get to get leaked, or votes to be called. >> gates resigned from congress immediately after trump nominated him for attorney general, effectively ending the ethics probe. since he was no longer a member of the house. he has blasted the report on social media, saying, quote, there is a reason they did this to me in a christmas eve eve report and not in a courtroom of any kind, where i could present evidence and challenge witnesses coming up this afternoon on the four, with just days to go until

eve elsewhere around the globe. so alexandra, let's get a real time update on where santa is now and what's he up to? >> yeah. so this is onstar, 16th year of following santa, which we're so excited about. so you can actually see what santa is up to right now, even if it's not the 24th in your area. so all you have to do is press your gm onstar button and connect with an advisor and see what he's up to. so we have real time updates on what he's doing in the north pole. you can also talk to him yourself. so all of that's available right now. but on the 24th you can call in and we'll give you real time updates on where he is on his trip. so we know he's a busy guy. he's traveling all around the world, and we'll make sure we'll give you the latest and greatest. and every time we do, we'll make a donation to the american red cross. so really fun way to engage with onstar during the holidays. >> yeah, it's all for a good cause. and i'm sure you're going to be quite busy tomorrow. i'm curious. you've been doing this. you've had this partnership in place now for 16 years. what have you seen in terms of the

number of people who are who are pushing that, that onstar button and actually taking part and checking in on where santa is? >> yeah. so we've done this for quite a long time, and we're amazed each year how many people engage with this program and how many people interact with onstar to see where santa is at. our advisors take great joy in doing this every year, and we love adding new elements to the campaign, new social media efforts and youtube videos, etc. so we just see year over year growth with this program, and we're so excited to see results look like this year. so encourage everyone to push the blue button and participate. >> and you know, you alluded to this earlier. you said that it's all for a good cause, that if people press that button, there is also a donation. how does that work and where does the money go? >> absolutely. so we have a great partnership with the american red cross. so every time you push that blue button to talk to santa or follow him, or use our onstar guardian app to follow santa, which has all the same functionality, onstar will make a $1 donation to the american red cross for up to a maximum donation of $30,000. so every time you're pushing that blue button, you're having some fun and also giving to a great

>> yes. so we have our onstar guardian app. so if you don't have a gm vehicle, don't worry, you can still engage with the program. so in the guardian app you'll see an onstar santa hat. test that button. you can follow santa and you can call him straight from the app. so on the 24th, the little hat will start moving around the globe. so you'll see where he is in real time. and so a great way to engage. and every time you do that as well we'll donate another dollar. so really fun easy ways to participate over this holiday season. and hopefully everyone gets a good update on where santa is at. >> all right i know you're going to be busy tomorrow getting a lot of calls. >> absolutely. >> sounds like a lot of fun. alexandra, thank you so much for joining us from monster. >> thank you for having me. have a good one. >> yeah. >> happy holidays. all right. let's talk about our weather here in the bay area because obviously we have a series of storms visiting us here during the holiday week. but giving you this live look here over the south bay, i believe. and it looks like we have obviously a little bit of a break in the, in the wet weather, at least for right now. let's bring rosemary back into the picture here. more
