standing atop the debris calling for help. i want to go live now to ktvu. jesse gary, who's been talking with people who were there when the wharf collapsed. what are they saying? jesse? >> greg. they're saying they didn't believe their eyes, even though it happened right in front of them. we are on the coast here in santa cruz, on west cliff drive, and just over the past hour, the fog has moved in. so we're not able to show you the wharf and how it looks now about 150ft shorter than what it was when the day started. however, we have two people who were on the wharf at work when this event happened. we'll talk to jenny and marina. >> jenny and mila. >> mila. i'm sorry. jenny and mila. marina? yes. owners of marina. candy, right? yes, ma'am. all right, so you and your daughter are both there, right? your head slightly turned, but you are looking directly at the end of the wharf. and what did you see? >> so i saw the crane and the
5:01 pm
building on the wharf. it just it started going to the left, like sideways and down. and i didn't hear any sounds or like splash. and then it just fell and then it just kind of gone after a second. >> and do you look at each other and what do you say? >> i was paying at the window at stag narrows for crab and she said, mom, the end of the wharf just fell off. and i was like, what? and she said, yeah, look, the building's gone. so i looked over there and there's a construction fence you can't really see behind it, but the building and the crane were just not there anymore. >> is it is it more surreal or does it pop into your head? g? i need to move. get off the wharf. >> no, it was it was surreal. i was just like, stay here. and i walked over to the left, to the railing and saw the whole building. a bulldozer, a fishing boat, all the lampposts just floating. and there were two men on the platform. it was. it had
5:02 pm
all stayed together. it hadn't broken apart. it was just floating. >> there were the men saying anything or doing anything? >> i couldn't hear them. they seemed pretty calm. they, i'm sure, were talking back and forth. within maybe five minutes, a wave runner had gone out there and rescued one of them. i'm not sure how the other one, both of them, he he rescued both of them on a wave runner, and we just stood there and in shock, just watching it kind of float and wondering if it was going to sink. and people kept telling us, like the construction workers were telling us to move back. but, you know, of course, we're kind of just in disbelief. >> well, why wouldn't you move back and think, well, if that section can collapse, how safe is this section? >> right. well, we did move back where they told us to it. the whole part that had collapsed had been under construction. there was, like i said, construction fencing. and it was on the other side of that. i
5:03 pm
mean, i don't know, i'm on that wharf almost, you know, weekly because our business is there and it's just kind of you don't expect anything like that to happen. and i felt like if they were concerned about the rest of it, that they would like be a little more urgent about it. >> the city says 150 foot section of the wharf fell into the ocean. but it's a section, as you said, that was under construction or renovation because of previous storms and that the decking, the pavement, etcetera, that weights down the pylons and that portion was removed. and so that could be one of the contributing factors. whereas where you were standing, you still have the pavement, you still have the decking, it's still secure. and so maybe it's not as at risk. >> well, i mean, everybody was going about their business in the and, you know, everybody was just still doing their thing. and the businesses people were still over at the window paying and fishermen were still
5:04 pm
fishing. so it didn't seem like we needed to be concerned. once fire and rescue showed up, then they were like, can you guys please leave? and so of course, everybody started evacuating at that time. >> now, what happens going forward with your business? because you know, a business owner, you have to have income coming in. what's the story? can you get to your business? >> no, i'm not sure what's going to happen. yeah, i don't know. i know we want everybody to be safe. there's a lot of businesses out there and the majority of them are family owned, local families. so i don't know. we haven't heard. we have. we have one small location over on eagle street on the lower west side. so we're bringing a lot of our product to that store and hoping that people will come there. yeah. >> perfect. ladies, thank you so much. and i'm so relieved that you didn't go into the drink as well.
5:05 pm
>> oh, gosh. right i know. yeah. your daughter. >> thank you very much. great eyes. always watching. thank you very much. thank you. and just to be put a fine point on this, the city says that engineers are now surveying what is left of the wharf, which is most of it, just that 150 foot section is gone, but they are checking and doing structural analysis to see how safe it is and if and when it can open. for right now it is closed indefinitely. beaches are closed as well because the surf is getting a lot rougher. the mayor saying what came earlier today is not as bad as what's going to come tonight and into tuesday. there has been some flood watches and concerns in capitola, as well as all the beaches here in santa cruz have been closed because officials say there's still debris floating in the water. and if you are a surfer or a swimmer and a piling hits you, it can either hurt you severely or kill you. we'll have more coming up

coastline and our beaches as well. meanwhile, outside of that, it's been a little bit of a soggy day. we have fog out there, scattered showers as we await the next storm. here's another view over san francisco, and from this vantage point, it looks fairly quiet. as we pull back, we are looking at the storm still offshore, and there is an advisory for travel with this next system. that will be until tomorrow evening. as for our west slope, as well as areas over lake tahoe, could see wind gusts to 45mph and above 6000ft, 5 to 10in, maybe even a little bit more. over the weekend, the storms provided a lot of rain to the lake tahoe area. this is going to be the first system that brings in with it a good amount of snow, and it will impact the passes. here's a look at the storm talking about it there. and as we roll into the overnight hours, it is going to come ashore by 2 or 3:00. it is pouring over the north bay between 3 and 5:00 it's to the central and south bay. risk of thunderstorms with this as well. tomorrow morning is going to be

last week and a half of december. ktvu sally rasmus joins us in studio with a look at the conditions right now and what's expected over the next 10 to 12 days. allie. >> well, greg, more than 119 million people expected to travel long distances this holiday, and triple a says the vast majority, about 90%, will be driving with fewer than 48 hours until christmas day. many of them are likely already on the road now. taking a live look at the east shore freeway here behind us, you can see some slow traffic in both the east and westbound directions, the drizzly, rainy conditions likely adding to the slow drive there right now. but one possible reason for the increased holiday travel on the road. gas prices nationwide are lower than they were one year ago. the cost of a flight, in contrast, is more expensive than a year ago. even so, this morning at bay area airports, there were plenty of people preparing to board a flight to their holiday destination, and they seem to be in good spirits. >> just be happy and treat everybody good and you can't go wrong with that. >> yeah, and you got to be

patient. you know, you might have. >> oh patience number one. >> two years ago we didn't make it because of all the southwest and every other airline. so we were at sfo till 3 a.m. when they finally said the flights weren't going through. >> so feeling better this year? >> yes. so far this is really nice. it's not too crowded. >> triple a says an estimated 3 million more people are expected to travel by air and by road this holiday compared to last year. another reason for that overall increase the fact that christmas falls on a wednesday this year, the middle of the week. that's had the effect of stretching out the peak travel period over a longer span from december 21st through january 1st, which is about 12 days now. if triple a's projections prove correct, 119 million travelers this holiday season would set a new record, surpassing the previous holiday travel record set back in 2019. >> greg, hopefully those good attitudes continue. ali. thank you. some drivers in the east bay hit more than just holiday traffic after van caught fire inside the caldecott tunnel. you

>> greg. good evening. well, since hearing of rickey henderson's passing, we have seen people from all over oakland coming out here and showing a little bit of love. you see them coming out, bringing in flowers. we see some candles that have been left over to the 24 poster board that's showing the year of his birth and his death. the yellow and orange oakland a's flag hanging on the fence as well. all of this just outside of the oakland coliseum itself. many of the folks here saying that they are just paying some respect, paying a little bit of love to a person they say has been gone, taken away much too soon, and now they are telling me all the fans i've talked to all day today say that rickey henderson is deserving of a more permanent memorial here in the city of oakland. don ppe puts down a red flower on a wall dedicated to the late legend rickey henderson. >> i wanted to pay tribute to him as a human being who lost his life way too young. >> her favorite memory? henderson showing kindness to both her and her son at a meet and greet. >> we got up to the front of the

inside to escape when seconds count. piedmont police chief said that when emergency crews arrived, the truck was fully engulfed in flames. when that vehicle crashed, police officers tried to put out the fire with extinguishers, but it was too hot. last year, dozens of bay area first responders received special training on how to tackle electric vehicle battery fires, which can require huge amounts of water to put out. people who drive or ride in teslas may not realize they could have a hard time getting out of their vehicle if it catches fire. that's because when the battery power is lost, people have to use a manual release to open those doors. now, in many evs, a double pull of the latch will open the door. but in the cybertruck, tesla's website shows the front door release is in front of the window switches. the back door release is in the side door pocket underneath a panel. michael brooks of the center for auto safety in washington, dc told us there are currently no federal standards for where those emergency releases have to be located.
