sent multiple people to the hospital. what we know about how it happened. and destructive waves tear apart the santa cruz wharf tonight. the warning from officials after part of the wooden structure came crashing down. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at six. >> it fell into the water and it sounded like thunder. and i've never been out anywhere close to this big, and i've never seen it this big. it's i've seen it one other time where it was breaking outside the wharf. but it's definitely bigger today. >> good evening. i'm ellie rasmus, three people who'd been working on part of the santa cruz wharf fell 20ft into the frigid water below. first responders rescued all of them, and they're now being evaluated at a nearby hospital. you can see here in the monitor the debris floating. it looks like an entire building floating on the waves here after it happened. the collapse of the santa cruz wharf stunned onlookers and people living in seaside communities as a more powerful storm is headed towards the area tonight. ktvu is jesse gary heard from some of the

people visiting the wharf who saw it unfold. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> three teens fishing on the santa cruz wharf caught an eyeful around 1230 monday afternoon. the trio says large swells started shifting the supports of the century old tourist icon, and then a 150 foot section collapsing into the angry pacific ocean. >> we noticed that the pier was swaying a lot, and it was. we heard a lot of cracking, but we didn't think much of it. and then all of a sudden it literally it all fell into the water and like there was people on it as well. a lot of construction workers that were on the pier, and it fell into the water and it sounded like thunder. >> the boys ran for safety, then returned to see three men stranded on the partial platform as it slowly sank into the sea. >> pretty scary because we thought the pier was cracking like under us when we were running, so we just thought like we were in a movie, like like running away from the cracks and

stuff. >> santa cruz city officials say three people, one a city project manager and two contract engineers were checking that section of the wharf because it was undergoing a $4 million renovation. this due to damage sustained over the past two winter's worth of storms. >> our staff and our contractors had no no sense or indication that the wharf was going to give way again. they were out there doing inspections as part of our preparations to make sure that the wharf was safe. >> all three men went into the water but were rescued. the santa cruz fire chief says his department had personnel already pre-positioned because of forecasted large swells. >> we were proactively in the water patrolling the coastline with pwcs, and we also had lifeguards patrolling the cliff. >> those first responders rescued two of the victims. the third self rescued jenny marini, owner of marini's candies, captured the moment when one of the victims was rescued by a lifeguard riding a jet ski on

that wharf. >> almost, you know, weekly, because our business is there and it's just kind of you don't expect anything like that to happen. >> this was another example of how, despite our best predictions, talking with our weather experts, mother nature can surprise us. >> officials say the wharf is closed indefinitely due to the collapse. additionally, late monday afternoon, a public safety alert was issued asking people to stay out of the water at all beaches. >> we are anticipating that what is coming towards us is more serious than what was there this morning. this is going to be high tide at a time when we have king tides and all kinds of other activities out there in the pacific ocean. >> the main beach here in santa cruz is closed, as well as cowell's beach and seabright also closing its beaches and capitola bracing for flooding. three. two one. >> now several people were

hospitalized following a chairlift accident today in south lake tahoe. this happened this morning at heavenly mountain resort. the tahoe douglas fire department says crews rushed five people to a hospital in reno. their conditions were not released. there are reports that two four person chairlifts collided with each other. a spokesperson for heavenly released a statement with no additional details or information. it says only quote, the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident, end quote. and we're monitoring what happened there in the sierra as well as the forecast up in the mountains as we take a live look out at lake tahoe. meteorologist rosemary oroczo standing by and will bring us a closer look in just a few minutes. well, millions of people are flying to see loved ones, and that means bay area airports are busy. here's a live look at sfo where they have. there have been nearly 200 flight delays and at least one cancellation, according to the website flightaware. inside the airport, the scene was bustling. 160,000 people are expected to pass through the airport today. most

people we talked to at sfo and other bay area airports said things were moving smoothly this morning. >> two years ago, we didn't make it because of all the southwest and every other airline. so we were at sfo till 3 a.m. when they finally said the flights weren't going through. so feeling better this year? yes. so far this is really nice. it's not too crowded. >> officials at sfo say they are seeing passenger numbers at 98% of pre-pandemic levels, with the crowds and delays due to wet weather. they are asking people to give themselves a little extra time. >> a lot of times when we do see delays, it is impacting those short haul flights along the west coast, just by nature of the fact that there's so much more frequency on those markets. the good news is airlines are starting to make up some of the time. earlier today we were seeing delays averaging 45 to 60 minutes. that's now down to 25 30 minutes. so they are managing to shave that off and get back to on time. >> and there's also good news

for all those people hopping into their cars to head out for the holidays nationwide. and here in the bay area, gas prices are lower than they were at this time last year. now, this holiday season, the california highway patrol wants to make sure drivers celebrate safely. the chp will begin its maximum enforcement period. it starts tomorrow, christmas eve, 6:00 in the evening, and will go on through midnight on christmas day. now, officers out in the road will be looking out for signs of people driving under the influence. driving distracted drivers could also get tickets for not wearing their seatbelts or speeding. the chp says last year, they arrested more than 900 people for driving under the influence over the three day christmas weekend. well, people across the bay area continue to honor the great a's hall of famer rickey henderson, who died on friday. fans, loved ones and former teammates still grieving today and offering tributes to one of the town's greatest baseball players of all time. ktvu james torres live at the oakland coliseum as the community calls for a permanent memorial to the baseball legend. james.

>> ali. well, ever since we heard of that death earlier in the weekend, people have been coming in since the weekend, even since all day today, leaving all kinds of tributes. here you see the big 24 poster board, the yellow and green oakland a's flag, lots of different pictures, flowers, candles, anything you can think of that usually makes up a makeshift memorial. a lot of people here saying they're doing this to show a little bit of love and tribute to someone they say was taken way too soon. now, people i talked to today also say that rickey henderson deserves a more permanent tribute, a more permanent memorial here in the city of oakland. don ppe puts down a red flower on a wall dedicated to the late legend rickey henderson. >> i wanted to pay tribute to him as a human being who lost his life way too young. >> her favorite memory? henderson showing kindness to both her and her son at a meet and greet. >> we got up to the front of the line. he got rickey's autograph. rickey saw me with my camera and

[music] the former artistic director set this production in san francisco, inspired by the panama-pacific international exposition, a world's fair held in 1915, thomasen led the sf ballet for 37 years. the nutcracker is his tribute to san francisco. >> it means so much to the city and the audience. [music] how they bring their children and their grandchildren, and it has become a real tradition, and they have taken an ownership of this nutcracker. and i'm very proud of that. >> grace manuel holmes first danced in sf ballet's nutcracker

more nutcracker shows than ever. the final day of performances will be december 29th in san francisco. betty yu, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, firefighters in the south bay delivered toys today to children spending the holidays in the hospital. members of the santa clara county fire department arrived at valley medical center in san jose this morning with some special gifts for the young patients. one patient had just been rescued days ago from an apartment fire. his mother says she is grateful for the outpouring of support. >> it means a lot to me, and it's it makes me. it humbles me just with what the valley and the people of the valley are doing. and it restores my whole faith. and just people in general, you know, with all of this. and we've been getting a lot of help. >> all the gifts for the young patients were donated by the community. well, coming up, the safety of the cybertruck is being called into question. after a tragic crash in the east bay. it left three young people

a deadly vehicle collision lvg a pedestrian. it happen after 5:00 saturd morning on dakota road ar brookville drive, just a couple blocks from paseo padre parkway. the pedestrian, identified as a 31 year oldan died at the s. police say he was crossing dakota and was not in a crosswalk when he was struck. the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. police say it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in that collision. also new at six a warning to drivers in santa rosa. police will begin phasing in the state's new daylight parking law. the law goes into effect statewide january 1st. the goal behind the law to improve visibility at intersections and driveways. it creates a 20 foot no parking zone at certain parts of the crosswalk to help make them safer for pedestrians. santa rosa police will take a phased

in approach to that enforcement in the beginning. warning citations will be issued. full enforcement of the new law, including giving regular tickets, will start after that warning phase. the deaths of three young people in the crash of a tesla cybertruck in piedmont last month is raising questions about the safety features of the vehicle. ktvu greg lee here in the studio with a closer look and what one safety expert says about that truck. >> greg lee the deaths of those three college sophomores the morning before thanksgiving left the families in the piedmont community in shock. we're learning more about the truck's design and how difficult it can be for people inside to escape when seconds count. piedmont police chief said at the time of the crash that when emergency crews arrived, the truck was fully engulfed in flames. crews tried to put out the fire with extinguishers, but the fire was too hot. last year, dozens of bay area first responders received training on how to battle ev battery fires, which can require huge amounts of water to douse. people who drive teslas may not realize they could also have a hard time

getting out when the battery power is lost. people have to use a manual release to open the doors. and many evs. a double pull of the latch will open the door. but in the cybertruck, tesla's website shows the front door release is in front of the window switches. the back door release is inside the side door pocket under a panel. michael brooks of the center for auto safety in washington, dc told us there are no federal standards for where those emergency releases are located. >> there should be a federal safety standard in place that dictates the type of markings that that these systems should have that dictate their location, so that when you rent a car or when you hop into someone else's vehicle or a rideshare, it's fairly obvious to you as a passenger how you can escape that vehicle in seconds if you need to. >> other methods of escape may also pose a problem. a viral video posted by all set collision of florida showed it took a person inside more than 12 seconds to break the cybertruck's reinforced glass

and escape using the type of hammer that many people carry in their cars for emergency. the chp currently has custody of the cybertruck and the piedmont crash. at the time, authorities said speed was likely a factor. state and federal authorities are investigating. we've reached out to tesla for comment, but they have not responded to our questions. allie. greg, such a tragedy. >> investigators say when they conclude their reports. thank you greg. moving to our bay area weather. taking a live look now at the bay bridge toll plaza. some drivers on the road, a little bit of slowing there. you can see the pavement is wet and from the lights on the two sides of the screen there you can see a pretty consistent drizzle coming down. that's been the case throughout much of the bay area today. to take a closer look at it all. let's bring in meteorologist rosemary oroczo with the forecast. rosemary. yes, ali. >> the scattered showers will continue this evening before it picks up during the overnight hours. giving you a look here over the golden gate bridge. little breezy, relatively mild out there today. temperatures ranging in the low to mid to

upper 60s for most even a few low 70s right now. santa rosa and san francisco reporting 58 as well as palo alto. so we are beginning to cool off. just some. and a look here over storm tracker two, where it seems fairly quiet out there. we do have a little bit of drizzle sprinkles below the radar beam, and that is going to continue to be the case. we also continue with the high surf warning until tomorrow afternoon for those large breaking waves, a high tide occurring at this time. some of those large wave sets could reach up to 60ft tall, so those colossal waves again helping to create those dangerous conditions not only in the water but along our beaches as well. meanwhile, another advisory, this one begins at 7:00 tomorrow morning and will go until the evening hours. a winter weather advisory for the west slope, as well as the greater lake tahoe area above 6000ft. we do expect a good amount of snow for tuesday. storm tracker two here showing you where the storm is. do expect it to come ashore. it

new at six. santa claus was spotted in san francisco today on his way to the california pacific medical center on van ness. san francisco fire crews took this video of santa making his way through the hospital to visit the children there to make sure they got their christmas toys just a couple of days ahead of christmas. the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units helped escort santa, along with some of the firefighters, to deliver those gifts to children and their families. you can see santa get prepped by some of the staff to ensure he follows all the safety protocols. he even went down to the emergency department, visiting the kids and families there. well, thousands of meals will be delayed before christmas. after the salvation army was hit by a

shooting and a break-in at their san francisco location this morning. ktvu is joey jorda spoke with some of the members of the nonprofit and how they're working to move forward. >> as the salvation army gears up to spread the christmas spirit. it's dealing with a setback. >> i got a phone call early this morning. we got five bullet holes that are in our facility. one went through our entry door. >> the door is now boarded up at the charity's bayview location across town. a burglar breaks through the fence at the central kitchen on harrison street the same day, stealing a battery from a food delivery truck. >> terrible timing. the grinch is at work while no one was hurt and the battery is replaceable, it's putting the team in a time crunch. >> they're loading up and shipping out over 4000 meals for seniors this christmas, prepared by students of the organization's culinary training academy, who are turning their lives around.

the world is in mourning tonight after oakland a's legend rickey henderson died this weekend. tonight, a memorial continues to grow outside the coliseum as fans call for a permanent spot to honor the baseball legend. community members are in shock after a piece of the santa cruz wharf breaks off and plummets into the ocean. three people were sent to the hospital, but they're expected to be okay. authorities are now urging people to stay far away from the coastline and in lake tahoe. multiple people were hospitalized after an incident on a ski lift at the heavenly resort. reports indicate two four person chair lifts collided. no word on the conditions of the two people hospitalized. the resort is investigating what happened. you're watching ktvu fox two news at 630. tonight, the house ethics committee released a scathing report that accuses former florida congressman matt gaetz of abusing drugs and of sexual misconduct. gaetz tried

to get a restraining order today in an effort to stop the report from being released. he wasn't successful. let's bring in ktvu greg lee in studio to break down the report. >> greg, this report is the result of a years long investigation that became a central focus during gaetz's consideration for attorney general. the committee says they found evidence of a pattern of gaetz paying women for sex. illegal drug use and trying to obstruct the investigation was indeed the honor of my professional life. former florida congressman matt gaetz, looking back fondly over the weekend on his nomination to be president elect donald trump's attorney general. >> but some things don't go according to plan. >> gaetz's nomination was derailed by allegations of misconduct claims now supported by the house ethics committee. in a report released monday, the panel accuses gates of, quote, regularly paying for sex, including with a 17 year old girl, along with buying and using illegal drugs, all while serving in congress. >> the house has to hold itself to a higher ethical standard. >> gaetz, who's continually denied the allegations, blasted

the report on social media, saying there's a reason they did this to me in a christmas eve eve report and not in a courtroom of any kind, where i could present evidence and challenge witnesses. >> you can see a vindictive tone to this whole thing. >> gaetz resigned from congress immediately after trump nominated him for attorney general, effectively ending the ethics probe since he was no longer a member of the house. >> they've been going great. senators been giving me a lot of good advice. i'm looking forward to a hearing. >> while initially optimistic, gaetz ended his run for ag eight days after being nominated, saying he was becoming too big of a distraction. now, some lawmakers feel the release of this report could have unwanted consequences. >> this will probably now start a war of other reports that are going on, on members to get to get leaked, or votes to be called. >> now, the justice department also investigated sexual misconduct allegations against gaetz but declined to press charges. the report did not find conclusive evidence gaetz

violated any federal sex trafficking laws. ali. >> greg lee, thank you for that report. now to the latest on the accused killer of united health care. ceo 26 year old luigi mangione appeared in court for the first time today where he pled not guilty to murder charges. mangione is accused of shooting ceo brian thompson outside a hilton hotel in new york city on december 4th. his charges include multiple counts of murder and murder as an act of terrorism. mangione's next court hearing is set for february 21st. he will remain in federal custody without bail until then. health care now inside the new york state courtroom, supporters of luigi mangione gathered to protest his arraignment. some protesters were heard shouting, quote, free luigi, and held signs that opposed privatized health care. it comes as some americans against private health care and insurance companies are hailing mangione as a hero. in arizona, a wildfire has grown to almost 900 acres in the tonto national forest with no sign of

containment. several small communities are set on evacuation status. crews say the fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain, which makes it very difficult to access. the fire has been burning since december 14th. it is said to be caused by humans, although the exact details on how it happened aren't known, and it's been made worse by the warm and dry weather in arizona. >> overall trending nationally, our fire seasons are longer. i think we've all seen that the dryness right now, you know, the lack of rain and the windy conditions certainly led to, you know, this human caused fire quickly getting to a size and a location, you know, on the mogollon rim where it's extremely difficult to safely suppress. >> firefighters are hoping that a shift in the weather, with cooler temperatures coming in the next few days, will help them with that fire fight. well, coming up, more starbucks workers join a nationwide strike with no signs of slowing down

strike that has now expanded to nine states. there's no word yet on whether baristas here in the bay area will join that strike. reporter. hello? >> hey, hey ho ho. >> starbucks workers united says members in new york, new jersey and missouri joined the strike yesterday. workers at starbucks stores in colorado, ohio and pennsylvania began the strike on saturday. that followed walkouts in los angeles, chicago and seattle on friday. now, the union says starbucks has failed to meet its demands for immediate and future pay raises. they're calling for an immediate increase to the minimum wage of hourly workers by 64% and 77%

over the life of a three year contract. >> i got out here just fighting for ourselves. we're fighting for baristas nationwide, and we're fighting for low paid work to no longer be considered low paid work. we want to be able to live and be in the cities that we work in. >> a union representative says the strike could reach hundreds of stores by christmas eve. starbucks says it is focused on maintaining service at its stores, while offering an average pay of $18 an hour with benefits. the company says there hasn't been any significant impact to their store operations since the start of the strike. meantime, thousands of amazon delivery drivers remain on strike today. this holiday labor dispute is affecting amazon's delivery hubs at more than a dozen major cities, including san francisco. the workers on the picket lines are demanding better pay and benefits. amazon says, because the striking workers are contractors, not amazon employees, they believe there's no reason to meet with them at the bargaining table. amazon is telling its customers

died. we're monitoring the developments of this story and we'll bring you the latest as we get them. christmas is just two days away, and several bay area homeless shelters are gearing up to help people who may be going through a difficult time of year. and the city of richmond today, the bay area rescue mission is distributing food for holiday meals to families in need. this is the mission's love without limits christmas turkey and meal giveaway that they do every year. organizers say the need for this food is growing. >> you can see there's a growing need. you can see through our line. we have all colors, all ages. we have families, we have seniors. so the need is definitely grown. and you can tell that people, you know, it takes a lot to come in the rain and just pick up a turkey. so people really need it. and so we're serving people who are very grateful today for what they're being blessed with. >> bay area rescue mission will also be serving christmas dinner with all the fixings through christmas night. the organization regularly serves about 4000 meals a day to people in need in richmond. with

christmas and hanukkah just days away, the holiday home decorations are in full swing neighborhoods across the u.s, decking out to show their holiday spirit. this video is from mesa, arizona, where 14 homeowners have been getting people into the holiday spirit with christmas lights for 30 years. homeowners who buy houses there often find christmas lights left behind from previous owners. and then, in one las vegas neighborhood, christmas lights started as a way to escape some of the fears and stress from the pandemic. just to have something meaningful and positive to see. since then, the joy hasn't died down. >> people were looking for someplace to go and to get out and still have a sense of community when we were not supposed to be gathering. it's been a labor of love, for sure. and it is crazy when you have 2 or 300 people standing in front of your house. >> and in santa clarita. the disastrous earthquake back in 1994 became the start of a new holiday tradition to show that spirits there weren't defeated. some homeowners banded together

to say, the lights don't go out when hard times come. and the tradition has gone on ever since. >> it is over the top. the neighborhood started it many years ago, after the northridge earthquake, to give back to the community, to bring some joy. >> one homeowner explained that he will spend four weekends of eight hour days to put up christmas lights in his neighborhood. back now to our weather. some dense fog across the bay area right now, and we have rosemary oroczo with that view of the golden gate bridge, i think it is right behind you. that's where the fog would be. >> yes, we do still have some fog out there. ali, after starting out with fog this morning, scattered showers over the bay area. and as we've been talking about high surf warning that will continue for our coastline through tomorrow afternoon, here's a live look at the dark one out there at this hour. we do have a few scattered showers continuing to fall, but again, it won't be until the overnight hours when the front moves through and brings us not only the risk of thunderstorms,

but continuing with the high surf, not only for the bay area, that high surf is pretty much for the entire west coast there, and does include the hawaiian islands as well. so the storms that have been parading over us over the last several days, again creating that very large west swell. here's a look at some of the rainfall amounts with this next system, anywhere from a quarter inch to an inch expected for most of our urban areas, could see more than that in our hills, and more rain on the way. as we get down the road, i'll show you that here in the extended forecast. the sierra over the weekend had a lot of rain. finally going to see snow return to the west slope, as well as the greater lake tahoe area. anywhere from 6 to 12in will be a possibility at some of the higher peaks, and there is an advisory for travel this time around. it begins tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. the timing on this coming ashore during the overnight hours between 3 and 5:00, it is pouring over the bay area. the risk of thunderstorms also

included with this next storm. here's a look at 6 a.m. if you have work to do tomorrow. if you have to be on the highways. if you're traveling, be prepared for this. it's going to be very hazardous out there. it's going to be slick ponding on the roadways, definitely expected there and then into the afternoon. it quickly moves out. we begin drying out by the second part of the day. the sierra is going to take a little bit longer. the winter storm warning goes until 7 p.m, and then we're dry for christmas and hanukkah on wednesday. by wednesday night, where this is midnight into thursday morning, notice rain and showers returning to northern california. so it looks like we're going to get one dry day. and with that, the drier air in place. it will be a chillier start to the morning. come christmas morning, you're looking at mostly cloudy skies, temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s, and for the afternoon, mostly cloudy conditions expected with temperatures in the 50s. relatively mild today. still 64 degrees in san jose for the east bay, 61 in oakland
