death and several rescues. >> this is ktvu fox two news at 730. >> good evening. i'm christien kafton. the santa cruz county sheriff's office says one man died today at sunset state beach after a large wave trapped him beneath debris. the man was pronounced dead at a hospital. today's powerful waves also caused part of the santa cruz wharf to collapse into the ocean. three people who were on that pier had to be rescued from the water. first responders rescuing all three. but they are now being evaluated at a nearby hospital. three teens fishing on santa cruz wharf watched as a 150 50 foot section of the pier collapsed into the ocean. >> we noticed that the pier was swaying a lot and it was. we heard a lot of cracking, but we didn't think much of it. and then all of a sudden it literally it all fell into the water and like there was people on it as well. a lot of construction workers, they were on the pier and it fell into the

water and it sounded like thunder. >> santa cruz city officials say three people were checking that section of the wharf because it was undergoing a $4 million renovation due to damage sustained over the past two winters. officials now say the wharf is closed indefinitely due to that collapse. a public safety alert has been issued asking people to stay out of the water at all beaches. we will have more coverage of today's high surf tonight at the 10:00 news. now over to the sierra. the national weather service says it will issue a winter weather advisory for the greater lake tahoe area starting at four in the morning. taking a live look right now at i-80 near donner summit. conditions there on interstate 80 are clear right now. you can see light snow build up on the shoulders there, with more snow expected in the coming days. resorts in the area reporting a steady stream of visitors right now, and we are learning new details about a ski

lift accident that happened at heavenly mountain resort earlier today in tahoe. that accident sending several people to the hospital after it appears they fell from the lift to the ground. ktvu zac sos joining us now from the newsroom, after speaking with one of those witnesses on the phone. zach, what did that witness have to tell you? >> well, that witness telling me he was on a ski trail near the lift involved in today's accident when he saw what he described as a, quote, pile of bodies underneath two of the lifts chairs. he snapped these photos. this happened around 10:00 in the morning. the lift you're looking at is the comet express, a quad chairlift, which means it can carry four people at a time. the witness telling me he didn't see how this happened. he was only there for the aftermath. but you can see in one of those photos two of the chairs pressed up against each other, back to back on social media, several people described seeing this happen, one chair sliding right back into the other that apparently

sent several people falling to the ground. we also heard from a woman who says she was on the lift ten minutes before the accident. here's what she had to say over the phone. >> as we were getting up in the air, we could see about 15, quite a few emt or all the medics that were there surrounding someone, and my husband did notice the backpack hanging from the chair lift. we were just on that. so thankfully that wasn't us. so. and i said out loud, i'm like, i can't even think about that because that'll make me not want to ski anymore. >> so what caused this accident? unclear right now, but if you look closely at one of the photos, you can see someone inspecting the wheels on a lift pole that's known as a pylon. the tahoe douglas fire protection district says five people were taken to the hospital in reno. the witness i spoke to says he also saw at least one person transported by hospital. heavenly mountain resort also releasing a statement earlier today with

only limited details, saying in part, quote, the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident. we are, of course, working to learn more right now, including the conditions of those five people hurt today. christian. >> zac. incredible pictures there. thank you for sharing that with us. and a thief. >> perhaps after weather. after weather. all right. thank you christian. good evening everybody. we are looking at mostly cloudy skies at this point. we do have scattered showers starting to be a little bit more consistent after a bit of a lull earlier today, the next storm is already moving ashore. areas of northern california as well as the pacific northwest. here's a look at sfo, where we will continue to see the scattered showers ahead of a steady, heavy rain that moves in during the overnight hours, and the high surf warning that we have been talking about now continuing on into tomorrow afternoon with those large breaking waves to

about 40ft, even some wave sets reaching 60 at times. it's not just the bay area, it includes areas from washington all the way to southern california and the hawaiian islands. so a pretty big deal going on and very hazardous out there, as you have been hearing. meanwhile, the winter weather advisory that christine talked about a moment ago for the lake tahoe area will go until the evening hours tomorrow night. and for the west slope, we'll also be covering areas of i-80 highway 50. if you're thinking about heading up tomorrow, it's going to be a treacherous drive. maybe give yourself plenty of time, and if you can, wait until christmas day, hanukkah day, we are looking at better weather. here's a view of storm tracker two. there's a look at the system now again, beginning to come ashore. rainfall amounts for us with this next storm. anywhere from a quarter inch to an inch for most of our urban areas. we will have some additional in our hills as well, as the north bay could pick up a little bit more. and the timing on this, it's been fairly consistent coming in during the overnight hours between 2 to 3:00. lake county, the north

bay, those shades of oranges and reds indicating the risk of thunderstorms along with just the heavy downpour. by 3:00, it's in the central bay. 4:00 is entering the south bay, and then it looks just to be a heavy, steady rain throughout the course of the morning. quick moving though. take a look at our noontime already beginning to see the back end here. we'll call for scattered showers with those clouds and then drying out by the evening hours. if you do have plans, that will set the stage for a chillier start to the day on christmas as well as hanukkah, temperatures will range in the upper 30s to low 40s. to start the morning mostly cloudy and dry, with 50s in the forecast for the afternoon. temperatures across the bay area. right now, most of us are in the 50s at this time. after a mild day earlier on and for tomorrow morning, temperatures ranging from upper 40s to upper 50s, with the heavy rain and the risk of thunderstorms. afternoon highs upper 50s to low 60s for tomorrow. your extended forecast. hopefully you get a chance to get out and enjoy the dry weather on wednesday,

because showers return into the forecast on thursday. right now, friday looks wet. saturday sunday a bit soggy too. kristen. >> rosemary, thank you so much. now a thief caught on camera stealing mail from a community in the east bay. the security video showing that man pulling items out of a mailbox in the woodminster neighborhood in the oakland hills. now, we're told that that thief used a master key to gain access to those boxes. this is the second time this month that those mailboxes have been burglarized. also in the east bay, a person was arrested while trying to break into a school back on december 2nd. a person made their way into khan academy barber school in pittsburgh. as the suspected burglar was inside. police converged on the scene before arresting the intruder. thousands of meals will be delayed before christmas after the salvation army was hit by a shooting and a break-in in san francisco this morning. ktvu is joey jorda spoke with some of the members of the nonprofit,

and he has more on how they say they're planning on moving forward. >> as the salvation army gears up to spread the christmas spirit, it's dealing with a setback. >> i got a phone call early this morning. we got five bullet holes that are in our facility. one went through our entry door. >> the door is now boarded up at the charities bay view location across town. a burglar breaks through the fence at the central kitchen on harrison street the same day, stealing a battery from a food delivery truck. >> terrible timing. the grinch is at work while no one was hurt and the battery is replaceable, it's putting the team in a time crunch. >> they're loading up and shipping out over 4000 meals for seniors this christmas, prepared by students of the organization's culinary training academy, who are turning their lives around. >> they may have been incarcerated at one point, they may have been homeless at one point, and now they're doing the

360 where they're going back and helping other people. [music] >> the organization thrives on goodwill, from donors who drop off cash into the red kettles, which will help recover from monday's crime. >> i just think that it's just unfortunate that people would do something like that. i mean, you see that it's a, you know, a cause to help the less fortunate. and then you are just, you know, stealing from them or taking away from that. >> the charity reports a 30% decline in donations, despite a 10% increase in those asking for help while struggling with inflation. >> this is an opportunity for people to help make a christmas miracle, be a holiday hero and get out there and help us out. >> and you can donate to the red kettles here in san francisco through tuesday afternoon. they're hoping to raise $125,000. around the area. in san francisco, joey horta, ktvu, fox two news.

in the latest round of grant money from the city. the sf shines program offers up to $10,000 in funding for

businesses to improve their storefronts or buy new equipment. it has provided nearly $4 million so far. businesses say they have used that money to buy everything from tables and chairs to a new commercial freezer. the program will start accepting a new round of applications in january. it's a magical and beloved holiday tradition that's uniquely san francisco. the sf ballet's nutcracker and this year, the production is marking some major milestones. ktvu betty yu takes us behind the scenes at the war memorial opera house. >> the san francisco ballet performed the first nutcracker in the united states in 1944. this year, the company is celebrating its 80th anniversary. >> my family has this term called nerve side. it's a mix between nervous and excited, so i'm feeling nervous and. [applause] >> 12 year old stella seek performs as a butterfly in the nutcracker. dancers have been rehearsing for the production since october. this holiday

season, the company is marking its 20th year of helgi thomason's nutcracker. [music] the former artistic director set this production in san francisco, inspired by the panama-pacific international exposition, a world's fair held in 1915, thomasen led the sf ballet for 37 years. the nutcracker is his tribute to san francisco. >> it means so much to the city and the audience. [music] how they bring their children and their grandchildren, and it has become a real tradition, and they have taken an ownership of this nutcracker. and i'm very proud of that. >> grace manuel holmes first danced in sf ballet's nutcracker in 1979, performing in upwards of 350 shows. today, she's the sf ballet school director. >> i hope that they're not just enjoying their time on the stage as performers, but also having a look at the teamwork that it

takes to put on a production of this professional level. i think it's so important for these students to see that it's not just about class, it's not just about performance, but it is a huge group of people that takes a huge group of people to put something on like this. >> we were with stella as she prepared to go on stage. >> i start like this. >> she normally trains 6 to 7 days a week throughout the year, and hopes to join the company one day. >> it's such an honor and i'm so grateful to be in a production like this one. and there are so many amazing dancers like, i'm standing here, an incredible dancer stood here before me. we make people happy, so i love making people happy because i know when i dance, i'm bringing joy to other people. trophy will have to wait for another season. the defending nfc champs were officially eliminated from playoff contention yesterday, even before their 29 to 17 loss to the dolphins in miami. coach kyle shanahan confirming today that the season is over. also for left tackle trent williams, whose ankle injury is apparently too much to overcome. >> he won't be playing in these next two games, so i guess that doesn't update. i don't think i said that, but hasn't been able to improve enough to get him out there, and we don't see that

happening enough in these two weeks, especially the situation we're in. >> up next for the niners, the detroit lions coming to levi's stadium for a monday night football rematch of last year's nfc championship game. the niners won't have left guard aaron banks or left tackle jalen moore in that game. coach shanahan saying linebacker dre greenlaw could also be shut down for the season as well. and people across the bay area continue to honor the great a's. hall of famer rickey henderson, who died on friday. fans, loved ones and former teammates all still grieving today and offering tributes to one of oakland's greatest baseball players. many fans saying the hall of famer deserves the honor of something more permanent. oakland councilman dan kalb explains, expects that to happen soon. >> i think there's no doubt that we should name, if not, you know, 1 or 2 things after rickey henderson. you know, someone

tomorrow, and a lot of families will be keeping tabs on santa as he begins his global journey. earlier today, we heard details on how the onstar navigation system in gm vehicles is partnering with norad to track santa's trip. >> all you have to do is press your gm onstar button and connect with an advisor and see what he's up to. so we have real time updates on what he's doing in the north pole. you can also talk to him yourself. so all of that's available right now. but on the 24th you can call in and we'll give you real time updates on where he is on his trip to boston. >> and for every call. onstar will be donating $1 to the red cross up to $30,000. this is the 16th year onstar has offered this santa service. the holidays. it can be a struggle for some seniors, and there are many physical and emotional

challenges that come with this time of year. but as ktvu and rubin found out, one local business is stepping up by putting on their santa hats and offering seniors both help and holiday cheer. [music] >> the lights, the decorations around the holiday. steve lawrence used to do it all at his home in san jose. >> oh yeah, i used to, really. i used to get into it when i was able bodied, but a stroke left the marine corps veteran with left side paralysis and his wife ella passed away. >> now, trimming a tree just isn't in the cards for the 81 year old. that's where the organization senior helpers comes in. >> we're always trying to figure out where we can help out, what we can do to put in a little extra effort with people. >> and while they provide non-medical in-home care year round, they realized during the holidays their clients were really missing something. >> and during the holidays, that gap gets really big. >> like, you know, the seniors don't get out to shopping or, you know, wrapping up presents

or or, you know, sometimes they have dementia. >> i wonder if i threw it away. >> no, i don't think you did. >> so the senior helpers will be santa's helpers for a few weeks. they'll be dealing with decorations, holiday cards, gifts and more and hopefully spreading a little cheer to the seniors too. >> it's like they're little kids. >> little kids again, you know? oh, wow. look at all this. >> merry christmas. oh, gee. christmas. >> oh, great. >> steve couldn't believe what the crew did in just a few short hours of decorating. it's been a while since his home looked this festive. >> that's awesome. great. it gives me a real warm feeling inside. >> it's sort of healthy. he says the gifts and treats they brought were just a bonus, but that the best part of the whole experience was sharing it with sarah, his regular caregiver, a woman he calls his protector and problem solver. >> sarah makes my day just by walking through the door. >> the senior helpers hope this might inspire others to spread a little holiday joy too, and perhaps offer to help a neighbor in need in san jose. ann rubin
