their fourth game in a row. vancouver won 4 to 3. san jose is back in action on friday at home against the golden knights. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. >> deadly waves walloping the california coast, sending a piece of the santa cruz wharf plummeting into the ocean. the shocking sight caught the city off guard as authorities urged everyone to stay away from the water. oh my god. >> oh my god. all of a sudden, it literally it all fell into the water. a lot of construction workers. they were on the pier and it fell into the water. and it sounded like thunder. >> and late today, we learned those massive waves and floating debris claimed a man's life ong the santa cruz county coast. >> california state parks say a santa cruz county man died this morning after he was found under debris at sunset state beach. good evening. i'm ali rasmus. and i'm greg lee. >> the massive waves have made

for a dangerous and destructive day and night on the coast. we begin in capitola, where lamonica peters reports on the man's death and the evacuations in place. reporter. >> after the national weather service issued a high surf warning on monday, capitola police closed down part of the village closest to the water, including restaurants, stores and hotels. they also advised that residents and visitors stay away from esplanade park, the wharf and capitola beaches. resident nico garner says he often surfs there but will stay away for now. >> there could be debris also, you don't know if there's stuff from the wharf that's still trying to come down here, so i wouldn't do it. >> just south of capitola, california state parks also says they responded to a call around 1130 monday morning. a santa cruz county man had been trapped under debris due to the high surf. bystanders freed him, but he later died at the hospital and his identity has not been

released. castro, please come to the door, please evacuate and come to the door. >> please. reporter. >> as nightfall approached capitola, police evacuated the venetian hotel on wharf road. guest. didi vargas says she's in town for her mother's funeral, and had already decorated her room to bring in the christmas spirit. >> it's christmas, and i know, i know what that's about. and i know, i know, it's all going to be okay. >> then she was told she'd have to evacuate and find someplace else to stay. >> i was told at first that it was just going to be temporary. and now i'm told i've got to go find another place to stay tonight and who knows how long. >> now, again, there is no flooding in capitola right now, but the high surf warning is expected to remain until tuesday at noon. and so the evacuations and the closures will stay in place until it's lifted. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> just north of capitola in santa cruz, powerful waves took down part of the santa cruz

pier. emergency responders rescued eight people who fell into the ocean along with the debris. ktvu jesse gary spoke to several people who saw it happen. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> three teens fishing on the santa cruz wharf caught an eyeful around 1230 monday afternoon. the trio says large swells started shifting the supports of the century old tourist icon, and then a 150 foot section collapsing into the angry pacific ocean. >> we noticed that the pier was swaying a lot, and it was. we heard a lot of cracking, but we didn't think much of it. and then all of a sudden it literally it all fell into the water and like there was people on it as well. a lot of construction workers that were on the pier, and it fell into the water and it sounded like thunder. >> the boys ran for safety, then returned to see three men stranded on the partial platform as it slowly sank into the sea. >> pretty scary because we thought the pier was cracking like under us when we were

running, so we just thought like we were in a movie, like like running away from the cracks and stuff. >> santa cruz city officials say three people, one a city project manager and two contract engineers were checking that section of the wharf because it was undergoing a $4 million renovation. this due to damage sustained over the past two winter's worth of storms. >> our staff and our contractors had no no sense or indication that the wharf was going to give way again. they were out there doing inspections as part of our preparations to make sure that the wharf was safe. >> all three men went into the water but were rescued. the santa cruz fire chief says his department had personnel already pre-positioned because of forecasted large swells. >> we were proactively in the water patrolling the coastline with pwcs, and we also had lifeguards patrolling the cliff. >> those first responders rescued two of the victims. the third self rescued jenny marini, owner of marini's candies,

captured the moment when one of the victims was rescued by a lifeguard riding a jet ski on that wharf. >> almost, you know, weekly, because our business is there and it's just kind of you don't expect anything like that to happen. >> this was another example of how, despite our best predictions, talking with our weather experts, mother nature can surprise us. >> officials say the wharf is closed indefinitely due to the collapse. additionally, late monday afternoon, a public safety alert was issued asking people to stay out of the water at all beaches. >> we are anticipating that what is coming towards us is more serious than what was there this morning. this is going to be high tide at a time when we have king tides and all kinds of other activities out there in the pacific ocean. >> the main beach here in santa cruz is closed, as is cowell's beach. seabright also closing its beaches, and capitola

bracing for possible flooding monday evening in santa cruz. jesse gary ktvu, fox two news. >> an accident at a south lake tahoe ski resort sent five people to the hospital today. it happened when two chairs on a ski lift collided at heavenly resort. the collision sent several people on that lift tumbling to the ground. ktvu zac sos joins us live in the newsroom with the latest details on what happened. zach. >> well, all of that's happening during an extremely busy period for the resort, right in the middle of a holiday week. tahoe. jam packed with families. right now. the five people hurt. they were apparently heading up the mountain for another run when something went terribly wrong, causing two chairs to crash into each other. >> we could see about 15. quite a few emt or all the medics that were there surrounding someone. >> heidi schmidt on the phone, describing the chaotic scene she saw unfold beneath a ski lift at heavenly mountain resort in tahoe monday morning.

>> other witnesses snapping these photos after a chair on the comet express lift reportedly slid right back into another, sending several people falling to the ground. >> my husband did notice the backpack hanging from the chair lift. >> another witness telling ktvu off camera that he saw what appeared to be, quote, a pile of bodies beneath the chair. he says he saw around 30 ski patrollers rush in to help, and later, at least one victim flown away by helicopter. the tahoe douglas fire protection district says a total of five people were taken to the hospital in reno heavenly mountain, closing the four person chairlift known as a quad, for the day. what caused the accident is still unclear, but at least one photo taken by a witness appears to show someone afterwards inspecting the wheels on a lift pole known as a pylon. >> we were just on that, so thankfully that wasn't us. so. and i said out loud, i'm like, i can't even think about that

because that'll make me not want to ski anymore. >> and heavenly mountain resort also releasing a statement earlier today with only limited details, saying in part, quote, the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident. end quote. we are, of course, working to learn more right now and the conditions of those five people injured today. ali. >> thank you. zac sos for that report. we'll wait to learn more. >> the salvation army says it is scrambling to catch up this holiday after gunfire that hit one facility and a break-in at another, both in san francisco this morning. ktvu joey horta spoke with some of the members of the nonprofit and how they're working to move forward. >> as the salvation army gears up to spread the christmas spirit. it's dealing with a setback. >> i got a phone call early this morning. we got five bullet holes that are in our facility. one went through our entry door. >> the door is now boarded up at the charities bay view. location

across town. a burglar breaks through the fence at the central kitchen on harrison street the same day, stealing a battery from a food delivery truck. >> terrible timing. the grinch is at work while no one was hurt and the battery is replaceable, it's putting the team in a time crunch. >> they're loading up and shipping out over 4000 meals for seniors this christmas, prepared by students of the organization's culinary training academy, who are turning their lives around. >> they may have been incarcerated at one point, they may have been homeless at one point, and now they're doing the 360 where they're going back and helping other people. [music] >> the organization thrives on goodwill, from donors who drop off cash into the red kettles, which will help recover from monday's crime. the crash of a tesla cybertruck in piedmont last month that killed three young people is raising questions about the safety features of the vehicle. experts say people who drive or ride in teslas may not realize how difficult it could be to escape if their vehicle catches fire. when battery power is lost, people have to use a manual release to open the doors. in some evs, a double pull of the latch will open the door. but in the cybertruck, as

tesla's website shows, the front door release is in front of the window switches and the back door release is in a side pocket underneath a panel. >> really absurd to expect humans in situations where there is a fire and seconds matter, to be able to look in their owner's manual and figure out how they're going to open a manual door release that's hidden. >> a video posted by all set collision of florida showed it took a person inside more than 12 seconds to break the cybertruck's reinforced glass and escape using a type of hammer that people carry in their cars for emergencies. the piedmont crash is under investigation by the chp and ntsb. [music] in arizona, a man's body was recovered from a frozen lake today after authorities say he fell through the ice. >> this story begins tonight's west coast rap. the coconino county sheriff's office says the 26 year old man fell into the woods canyon lake yesterday.

>> authorities say he was one of three people who walked out onto the ice. the other two people made it to safety. the victim's identity has not been released, but he was a student at arizona state university. in seattle, man is in custody in the deadly stabbing of a city bus driver. police say they arrested the suspect, richard sisolak, saturday morning as he was sleeping on a bus. this is video of that arrest. investigators say sisolak stabbed driver shaun yim last week. tonight, his fellow drivers held a vigil. they say this attack should serve as a wake up call to improve safety on the city's transit system. a strike by starbucks workers has now expanded to nine states. starbucks workers united says members in new york, new jersey and missouri joined the strike on sunday. locations in colorado, ohio and pennsylvania began their strike saturday. this comes after the initial walkouts in the cities of los angeles, chicago and seattle last friday. the union says starbucks has failed to meet its

families up to their rooms at ucsf benioff children's hospital. the san francisco police department collected about 900 toys that were delivered to kids last week. today, they also spread cheer at family house, a nonprofit that provides housing and services for families with children who are dealing with life threatening illnesses. >> a sibling that's in the hospital right now. so we're kind of separated. but i'm glad she's not missing out. it is kind of hard being separated from both the kids and having to manage the time. but but yeah, this means the world to us that she's able to see this and the excitement on her face to see santa and the pd doing this for all the kids. >> families say it is not easy spending the holidays in the hospital. so for the children to get to see santa and feel the love from the community is a treat. >> it is a magical and beloved holiday tradition that's uniquely san francisco. the sf ballet's nutcracker and this year the production is marking big milestones. ktvu betty yu

takes us behind the scenes at the war memorial opera house. >> the san francisco ballet performed the first nutcracker in the united states in 1944. this year, the company is celebrating its 80th anniversary. >> my family has this term called nerve side, and it's a mix between nervous and excited. so i'm feeling nervous. excited. [applause] >> 12 year old stella sik performs as a butterfly in the nutcracker. dancers have been rehearsing for the production since october. this holiday season, the company is marking its 20th year of helgi thomason's nutcracker. [music] the former artistic director set this production in san francisco, inspired by the panama-pacific international exposition, a world's fair held in 1915, thomasen led the sf ballet for 37 years. the nutcracker is his tribute to san francisco. >> it means so much to the city

and the audience. [music] how they bring their children and their grandchildren, and it has become a real tradition, and they have taken an ownership of this nutcracker. and i'm very proud of that. >> grace manuel holmes first danced in sf ballet's nutcracker in 1979, performing in upwards of 350 shows. today, she's the sf ballet's school director. >> i hope that they're not just enjoying their time on the stage as performers, but also having a look at the teamwork that it takes to put on a production of this professional level. i think it's so important for these students to see that it's not just about class, it's not just about performance, but it is a huge group of people. it takes a huge group of people to put something on like this. >> we were with stella as she prepared to go on stage. >> i start like this. >> she normally trains 6 to 7 days a week throughout the year, and hopes to join the company one day. >> it's such an honor and i'm so

forecast. not just there at the airports and the rain that we had today, but there's more on the way. yes, for folks that are going to be on the highways tomorrow morning, it's going to be a soaking coming our way. >> this is going to be the strongest in the series of systems that we have seen since the weekend. giving you a live look here at the golden gate bridge, where it still looks mainly dry. there on the pavement, a little bit of drizzle, a few sprinkles, a lot of fog today and temperatures still on the mild side. 60 degrees reported in santa rosa. we have 64 in san jose. and we continue with the advisory for large breaking waves and a high surf warning until tomorrow afternoon, 6 p.m. for the entire coastline. not only the bay area stretches from washington all the way down to socal and over towards the hawaiian islands. here's a look at storm tracker two. beginning to see some green on the screen just on the north edge of sonoma county, the brunt of the moisture still on its way. looks like we are going to get even the risk of thunderstorms as we roll through

the overnight hours. and a winter weather advisory for the sierra, as snow levels are expected to drop down to about 6000ft and could see anywhere from 6 to 12in over the sierra. as we roll through our tuesday. it starts early tuesday morning and will not expire until tuesday evening. for folks that are traveling over the west slope, for us here at home, anywhere from a quarter inch to an inch of rainfall expected over most of our urban areas, a bit more in our hills, a little bit more possibility in the north bay. and here's the timing on this. there's a look at 2 a.m, three, 4:00 in the morning. it's beginning to shift, 5:00 rolling through the south bay and then behind it, steady rain for the morning commute there. seven. there's ten. there's noon. and we will continue to dry out. so a fairly quick moving system, but in any case it's going to bring us a good amount of rain in a short amount of time. tomorrow morning. temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. and then for the afternoon upper 50s to low 60s.

his home in san jose. >> oh, yeah, i used to, really. i used to get into it when i was able bodied. >> but a stroke left the marine corps veteran with left side paralysis and his wife ella passed away. now, trimming a tree just isn't in the cards for the 81 year old. that's where the organization senior helpers comes in. >> we're always trying to figure out where we can help out, what we can do to put in a little extra effort with people. >> and while they provide non-medical in-home care year round. they realized during the holidays their clients were really missing something. >> and during the holidays, that gap gets really big. >> like, you know, the seniors don't get out to shopping or, you know, wrapping up presents or or, you know, sometimes they have dementia. >> i wonder if i threw it away. >> no, i don't think you did. >> so the senior helpers will be santa's helpers for a few weeks. they'll be dealing with decorations, holiday cards, gifts and more and hopefully spreading a little cheer to the seniors too. >> it's like their little kids. >> little kids again, you know.
