[music] >> fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning and welcome back. >> i'm gasia mikaelian and good morning i'm dave clark. it's christmas eve. it's tuesday, december 24th. let's check in with roberta gonzalez. with our still constantly changing weather. roberta. >> the heaviest rain pushed through the bay area around one, two, three and 4:00. but since 4 a.m, we've been picking up copious amounts of precipitation, and therefore it's leading to a lot of water on the roadways that zero in on that right there that's developed around the cupertino, sunnyvale and santa clara area. in fact, we're seeing pockets of heavy rain now push into sonoma and lift into pleasanton will inundate the dublin and livermore area as well. and then as we march on over to the north bay, where you see those little bubbles, that's an indication that we're getting flooding on the roadways. daly city around the peninsula, san francisco as

well, and you're going to see more heavy rain from that system to the north as well, at least that cell to the north of us. our storm tracker does clearly illustrate we're in the rain this morning. it will gradually diminish this afternoon. our current air temperatures are cooler than yesterday in the 50s, climbing to seasonal highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. we will track this system together. i'm now seeing snowfall in the tahoe area, and we'll talk about that in just a couple of minutes. >> gasia roberta. thank you. let's take a peek at what's happening on the roads. we'll start here in the heart of oakland. you can see interstate 880 is looking great both north and southbound as we pass the coliseum. of course, as you would expect, this is the case just about everywhere. roads are wet, so keep that in mind. you might hit some standing water. we will help you through this morning commute. let's swing now down to the south bay. see what's happening on 280 in san jose near highway 87. again, some rain on the camera lens, but no traffic troubles to report congestion wise. also over at the bay bridge toll plaza. smooth sailing here. if you're making your way from oakland to san francisco, we'll

keep an eye on all the traffic issues that may pop up this christmas eve morning. meanwhile, there are long lines at sfo ahead of last minute christmas travel. this comes after the faa ordered what ended up being a brief ground stop for all american airlines flights. >> it was a big deal this morning. ktvu is james torres is at sfo to explain that ground stop that's now been lifted. good morning, james gasia dave. >> good morning to you. well, it really didn't stress too many passengers out. in fact, it got to a point where a lot of people didn't even realize that there was a ground stop to worry about in the first place, because it was so early this morning and it was so short lived. still, we're seeing some of those long lines here at sfo. they're a lot longer. just about an hour ago. we're starting to see some progress here. and we're just outside the american airlines check in area. that's where the ground stop was in effect for earlier today. but we want to show you what some of these lines look like about just a few hours ago this morning, that's when we really saw the peak of some of the airline traffic here inside sfo. and that was when we

saw that short window of time when the timing of flights was threatened. american airlines reporting that tech issue nationwide, calling for a grounding at every airport. some people in other places and other states all across the country, they say they were removed from planes, but it did not have that effect here at sfo. but some passengers we talked to getting ready to board their holiday flights say they did notice those long lines. >> this is a little surprising. i haven't seen sfo like this in a long time. but yeah, i mean so far so good. we're excited. >> just on the other side of me, i can see the flight boards that say, for the most part, almost all flights taking off from sfo will be taking off right on time. very few delays to report to you this morning. that ground stop was lifted just after 5:00 this morning. it did not affect any flights here in san francisco. live this morning from sfo. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you james. the main beaches of santa cruz county are

closed this morning after part of the santa cruz wharf collapsed into the ocean. there are concerns here. there could be even more major storm damage later today. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> this was the scene early yesterday afternoon as powerful ocean waves battered the santa cruz county coast. authorities say the two people had to be rescued after a 150 foot section of the wharf fell into the ocean. a third person was able to get out on their own. several people were fishing on the pier when it suddenly collapsed. >> we noticed that the pier was swaying a lot and it was. we heard a lot of cracking, but we didn't think much of it. and then all of a sudden it literally it all fell into the water and like there was people on it as well. a lot of construction workers that were on the pier, and it fell into the water, and it sounded like thunder. >> first responders say the construction workers who fell into the water after that wharf collapsed suffered minor injuries. the section of wharf was already closed to visitors due to earlier storm damage, now

in the studio now to tell us, andre, what we know so far. >> dave garcia, good morning to you both here, heavenly mountain resort. we heard from multiple witnesses to try and piece together what happened. the five people were heading up the mountain for another run when something caused two chairs to crash into each other. witnesses took these photos. they told us a chair on the comet express lift reportedly slid back into another. the impact causing several people to fall to the ground. >> we could see about 15. quite a few emt or all the medics that were there surrounding someone. >> another witness told us off camera he saw what looked like a pile of bodies beneath the chairs. witnesses say they saw around 15 to 30 ski patrollers rushed to help, and later at least one victim had to be taken to a hospital by helicopter. heavenly mountain resort said in a statement, in part, the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident. workers were seen inspecting the wheels of a lift pole after the accident, but the cause of the

accident remains unclear this morning. we'll update you as we learn more. dave. >> all right. andre. thank you. time now, 706. a new law makes california the first state in the country to ban school districts from outing lgbtq students. it's a response to a handful of school boards around the state that recently adopted new policies involving gender identification. they require teachers or school staff members to notify parents if a student identifies as a gender other than what's on their school records. the critics of the new law argue these notification policies actually strengthen the ties between students and parents. now, another new state law will require students to learn native american history in a way that includes the mistreatment and perspectives of tribal members. lawmakers say the goal of the law is to teach young people the true history of california, and also the resilience of the native american people. tribal leaders say they're happy with the

passage of the bill, but they hope students also learn more about native california history than just tragedies. >> happening today, the chp begins its maximum enforcement period at 6:00 this evening. it will end midnight on christmas day. officers on the road will be looking for signs of people who are driving under the influence. speeding or distracted. drivers could also be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt. the chp says last year, officers arrested more than 900 people for driving under the influence over the three day christmas weekend. >> our time now 708. california has new laws coming. the parking and renter protections taking effect in just a couple of days. >> also, a quick hospital stop for 49ers star christian mccaffrey. the emotional visit with young patients who are spending the holiday not at home. >> plus, wishing you a festive and fun filled holiday and new year rom discovery kingdom. happy

done too. here are some of the stories we're following this morning. american airlines is now in the ketchup phase of its christmas eve flight pattern. the airline tweeted about a nationwide ground stop because of a technical problem around 330 this morning. the faa implemented that ground stop. then, about 90 minutes later, the faa lifted the ground stop and american's flights resumed. american airlines says airline safety is its top priority. >> several people in oakland are

recovering after a brazen carjacking. this happened yesterday on east 12th street and third avenue, near the west end of lake merritt, around 430. officers tried to stop a suspected carjacker who drove away. the vehicle then hit another car, injuring several people inside that second vehicle. the driver tried to run away and was quickly taken into custody. the national weather service is warning beachgoers about dangerous conditions along the bay area coastline, as breaking waves up to 40ft are expected. rough seas and high surf are experiencing, or that is the experience at all pacific coast beaches. the high surf warning is in effect now until 6:00 tonight. >> and president biden getting praise from progressives after he commuted the prison sentence for death row inmates. but not everybody agrees with that. critics say the crimes they committed are inhumane. president biden is commuting the death sentences for 37 men and is reclassifying their sentences to life in prison, without the possibility of parole. the three inmates not included are robert

bowers. he's responsible for the 2018 shooting at tree of life synagogue. dylann roof, a white supremacist who killed nine black church members in charleston, south carolina, and zoha tsarnaev. he was responsible for the 2013 boston marathon bombing. >> this shows you that joe biden has no regard for the rule of law, and that there is such animosity in the biden administration. >> i have real concerns overall with the death penalty, but i also have concerns with the executive branch overturning cases that have been decided by courts across the country. >> now, president biden said that while he condemns the murderers crimes and grieves for their victims, he quote in good conscience, i cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that i halted. this move comes after president biden's mass day of clemency

nine days ago. that's where 1500 people were pardoned. times now 713. a new state law is expected to remove thousands of parking spots in san francisco. the daylight parking rule takes effect statewide january 1st, but drivers have been issued warnings over the past few months to get ready for the change. the goal is to improve visibility at intersections and in driveways. the law creates a 20 foot no parking zone at crosswalks to help make them safer for pedestrians. >> tenants rights groups suffered a major setback last month when california voters decided against expanding cities abilities to limit rent increases. a state law that takes effect next week will give renters facing eviction a little more breathing room. it doubles the time tenants have to respond after receiving an eviction notice. from five business days to now ten. tenants rights groups say this may seem like a minor victory for california renters, but they think the new law could make a big difference when it comes to allowing people to stay in their homes. 49ers

superstar christian mccaffrey made the holiday season a little brighter for some children who are spending this christmas in the hospital. the all-pro running back recently paid a visit to lucile packard children's hospital in palo alto. mccaffrey handed out footballs and other holiday gifts to children. the hospital later posted video on social media of the visit. mccaffrey said it's an emotional day for him. >> it's really humbling coming over here because, you know, you realize how many of these kids and young adults are fighting so hard and especially over the holiday, and to see them to see their families all together with them and just to be able to spend a little time with them is really inspiring. >> this holiday visit to the hospital is part of the good work done by the christian mccaffrey foundation. he founded a group that works year round to bring smiles to children who are undergoing medical treatment. >> that is a great story. way to go, christian. yeah, time is up. in 15 we get to talk about christmas eve weather. a lot has been happening. roberta. >> yeah. the good news is that the thunderstorm activity that was heading towards the greater lake tahoe area and truckee has now subsided, and the rain has

traversed on over to snow. so we do have a winter weather advisory in effect for the greater lake tahoe area. up to ten inches of snow expected at lake level. 18in above 8000ft. and how about our own storm totals since 4:00 this morning? how about this one? have you seen milpitas receive more rain than the santa cruz mountains or the wailea of the north bay? kentfield? yeah, approaching 7/10 of an inch of rain in milpitas. that's what one little cell over an area dumping will cause. san jose over 3/10 of an inch of rain. nearly a half inch in fremont and san francisco. also over 3/10 of an inch of rain. so we're seeing a lot of rain now. we will continue to see a lot of rain through the morning hours. this is where the heaviest precipitation is right now. san leandro in through castro valley and also hayward. and look at that bigger cluster of activity that is lifting out of the fremont area and taking a

nosedive now towards the diablo mountain range of the santa clara valley. there you have also the heavy precipitation lifting from livermore over the altamont pass heading towards tracy, and where you see these bubbles. that's where we're seeing flooding on the roadways from the rain that is gathering. it's just a lot of rain in a short amount of time. and you also see a swath of precipitation now pounding the pavement from san francisco through daly city into la honda and pescadero. and boy, this is going to continue before gradually tapering off during the afternoon hours. it's cooler this morning into the 50s because now we're getting that cold shot of air with the passage of this atmospheric river. so therefore the winds are up to ten. we have seen gusts up to 35mph this morning. westerlies will blow 10 to 20 during the day. high surf warning still in effect until 6:00 tonight. we have picked up some of these sets 40 to 60ft. now they will continue to

subside and decrease as the day progresses. thus the warning expiration and then the coastal flood warning will allow to expire at high noon. but keep in mind these waves are lapping on shore and the rain is falling. so yep, we have some coastal flooding there. you have our futurecast by 1:00. see, we have a pop up shower here and there and then it diminishes, setting the stage for clear skies for santa arrival overnight tonight. so today diminishing showers tomorrow. dry for christmas and hanukkah, albeit partly cloudy. and thursday more rain arrives. today's highs 50s and 60s a bit cooler than yesterday, but seasonal. here's your extended forecast. we have showers in the forecast each and every day. dave, except tomorrow, which is my gift to you and garcia. >> that is a great gift, roberta. thank you. time now 718. the sonoma county fire department had to rescue three people after a big wave swept them off the edge of scottie's creek. you can see for yourself how strong that rush of water is

as it came up the creek. the force of it carried two people about 150 yards up the creek. we don't know if the three people were hurt. sonoma county firefighters are advising everybody. don't turn your back on the ocean or water. well, the salvation army is scrambling to help people in need in time for the holidays. after a shooting and a break-in at two separate locations in san francisco. the shooting happened at the bayview location. the doors, as you can see, are boarded up now. across town on the same day, the battery from a salvation army food delivery truck was stolen. now, while no one was hurt and the battery you can replace that. it's putting the team in a time crunch. local volunteers are loading up and shipping out more than 4000 meals for senior citizens this christmas. all of them prepared by students of the organization's culinary training academy. it's coming at a hard time, as the charity reports, a

30% drop in donations this year. so far, san francisco police have no leads in either of the crime cases. >> coming up, a long-time friendly rivalry lights up san francisco. a fire stations across the city are competing for holiday bragging rights, and how sal castaneda was involved. >> plus, merry christmas. merry christmas. oh, great. yeah. >> great. a group of caregivers springing into action to offer more than medical care. how? they're bringing holiday cheer to senior citizens who can't

some caregivers went way beyond their usual duties to make sure senior citizens they work with get more than their needed medical care. >> it's beautiful. ktvu is an rubin tells us how they're putting on their santa hats and giving help and holiday cheer to the senior citizens. >> the lights, the decorations around the holiday. steve lawrence used to do it all at his home in san jose. >> oh, yeah, i used to, really. i used to get into it when i was able bodied. >> but a stroke left the marine corps veteran with left side paralysis and his wife ella passed away. now, trimming a tree just isn't in the cards for the 81 year old. that's where the organization senior helpers comes in. >> we're always trying to figure out where we can help out, what we can do to put in a little extra effort with people. >> and while they provide non-medical in-home care year round, they realized during the

holidays their clients were really missing something. >> and during the holidays, that gap gets really big. >> like, you know, the seniors don't get out to shopping or, you know, wrapping up presents or or, you know, sometimes they have dementia. >> i wonder if i threw it away. >> no, i don't think you did. >> so the senior helpers will be santa's helpers for a few weeks. they'll be dealing with decorations, holiday cards, gifts and more and hopefully spreading a little cheer to the seniors too. >> it's like they're little kids. >> little kids again, you know? oh, wow. look at all this. >> merry christmas. oh, gee. christmas. >> oh, great. >> steve couldn't believe what the crew did in just a few short hours of decorating. it's been a while since his home looked this festive. >> that's awesome. great. it gives me a real warm feeling inside. >> it's sort of healthy. >> he says the gifts and treats they brought were just a bonus, but that the best part of the whole experience was sharing it with sarah, his regular caregiver, a woman he calls his

protector and problem solver. >> sarah makes my day just by walking through the door. >> the senior helpers hope this might inspire others to spread a little holiday joy too, and perhaps offer to help a neighbor in need in san jose. ann rubin ktvu, fox two news. >> meanwhile, the san francisco fire department is celebrating the holidays in a vibrant way. firehouses all across the city were decked out in lights and decorations. san francisco's mayor elect, daniel lowry, was there as the fire crew showed off their handiwork. our own sal castaneda was the grand judge of the holiday event, a difficult task, to say the least. the winner was station 18 on 32nd avenue. this is the festive scene. there are lots of lights, christmas trees, even a flurry of snow. you'll see in a minute. station 39 on portola drive took second place. station seven on folsom came in third. >> our time now, 725. well, baseball fans across the bay area and all over the country are mourning the death of oakland a's great rickey henderson, who died on friday. over the past few days, memorials have been placed at the gates of the oakland

coliseum. there are candles and signs and flowers. they withstood the wind and the rain through the weekend, but the fans of the team and of rickey henderson added even more to the small memorials. fans were already sad about losing. the a's are now heartbroken about the death of one of the greatest players in baseball's history. >> you almost can't believe it's true. you almost can't believe your team left, and you almost can't believe that the greatest person to ever play on that team also left, you know, way too young. >> he meant a lot to my team, and i look up to that. and it just it's a sad thing, you know? seeing the a's leave and now someone who meant so much to that franchise also leave. >> and some of those fans expect the oakland city council to do something soon to permanently honor rickey henderson. what changes are coming to san francisco's ferry building? we'll tell you about the businesses that are closing to make way for a new restaurant. >> also back in full force,

up today. heavy rain now falling around the peninsula where you see those bubbles. that's where we're having the flooding taking place from oakland across the bay into south san francisco, san mateo. you hear those heavy raindrops on your rooftops. and i wanted to share this with you. look, as this slices through the northern half of the state of california. look how wide it extends all the way into almost the santa barbara area. but we have a lot more moisture this morning. temperatures are in the 50s and diminishing showers this afternoon, going up to about 63in the warmest locations. we will have your santa's arrival forecast. that's coming up in a matter of minutes. garcia. >> well, thank you, roberta. let's see what traffic is doing out there. and really, it's a combination story here of weather and traffic, as it almost always is. lots of gray here at the golden gate between san francisco and marin counties. no slowdown on the roads, though, due to congestion. but of course, take it easy because the roads are wet across to the richmond-san rafael bridge. it's a similar story. headlights on windshield wipers may be going on

intermittent wet roads. still, keep that in mind if this is your passageway today. finally, the bay bridge toll plaza. things are looking a little lighter and brighter. congestion not a factor here. but again, you know the drill. take it slow because there could be some standing water there on the road. >> good advice. gasia time. 732. now to a developing story we're following. american airlines lifted its ground stop this morning, right before the huge christmas eve travel rush began. about 330 this morning, all american flights in the country were grounded because of a technical problem. let's take a live look at sfo right now. it's busy out there. a lot of people heading out there. american has fixed the problems it had. again, these are live pictures. american airlines says everything should be fixed now. flights will continue as normal for the rest of the day. now let's look at some of the other airlines flying in and out of the bay area today, right now at sfo. delays of flights are slowly picking up now. 36 flight

investigating. we don't know what caused the accident. workers, though, were seen inspecting the wheels on a lift pole afterward. let's talk about the risks that come up with a trip to the mountain by welcoming to mornings on two. avalanche and ski safety consultant jimmy tarte here with the. trying to help us focus on staying safe and of course, having fun. thanks for being with us. >> happy to be here. >> when you heard of the incident yesterday, what was your first immediate thought? >> well, it you know, they the incidents like this, they may be alarming, but that's only because they really don't happen very often. i, you know, in fact, the ski industry in the us can go hundreds of millions of user days without these happening. that said, though, it is a bad thing and something that can happen on chairlifts. despite the best efforts of the resorts and the highly professional lift mechanics that maintain the ski lifts, and i assume you know, they're regulated and they're checked and they're maintained. >> we're going to talk about a number of safety things that really are in our hands. but when you get on a chairlift, you're just trusting that the

resort is doing the right thing. >> yeah, there is that that amount of trust. but like you said, that trust isn't misplaced. i mean, i get on chairlifts all the time. i've done it professionally and for a living, you know, hundreds and hundreds of times a year. and it's just not something that i really spend a whole lot of time worrying about. so for most of your viewers, it's just not it's not good that these incidents happen, but it's not a huge thing to worry about. >> what is the number one thing you see on the slopes as an expert that makes you think, man, i wish they wouldn't do x. >> lack of situational awareness. the national ski area association actually has a list of rules that all skiers and boarders are supposed to abide by, to help keep themselves and others safe, and familiarizing yourself with those. the skiers responsibility code is probably the number one thing people could do to help keep themselves and others safe, and run down some of the most important points in that code. oh, just

remember, like the big one is people in front of you have the right of way. you know, you have no dedicated space in front of you. so just slow down and take it easy, especially in the, you know, when the slopes get crowded during the holiday season, sometimes it's better to just stop for a second and look around and enjoy where you are. >> you know more and more over the years. i see people, especially children, but also adults wearing helmets. yeah. can you talk about the importance of protecting the noggin? >> yeah. helmets have got man. when i, when i started out in the industry. helmets were heavy and uncomfortable and hot and didn't fit well. but these days they're really great. they've made huge strides. they don't weigh much. they're well ventilated. there's kind of no real good reason to not wear one. but again, that said, the best thing you can do to keep yourself safe is just know. the national ski area association skier responsibility code and keep your situational awareness up and maybe keep the speeds reeled in a little bit, too. when you're skiing at the resort. >> i know a lot of people like to go skiing with family and

we're following for you this morning. american airlines and the ketchup phase of its christmas eve flight pattern. the airline tweeted about a nationwide ground stop early this morning because of a technical problem. the faa implemented that ground stop. then, about 90 minutes later, the faa lifted the ground stop and flights resume. american airlines says airline safety is its top priority. there were no impacts to flight schedules at sfo because of this problem.

colder shot of air with the passage of the front. and that's why we had that thunderstorm activity in the high sierra. those two air masses were colliding between the warm and the cold and then offshore. we're monitoring the boys. and, you know, it was the scripps point sur boy that reported a nearly 30 foot wave earlier this morning, only the fourth time that has ever happened there. high surf warning will allow to expire at 6:00 tonight, and that's after seeing some sets out way out over the pacific, 40 to 60ft. wow. coastal flood warning will expire at high noon. keep in mind you have those waves. they're lapping on shore. they're clashing with the rain that's falling right now. and that's what causes the flooding along the san mateo coastline. this area of low pressure. although the front is traversing to the east and digging to the south, we have a lot of instability in its atmosphere. there you have right

didn't last long and many people are grateful. >> no doubt about that. garcia and andre, good morning to you here. it's not too long ago that you may remember some winter storms really ruined christmas and holiday plans for a lot of those folks. and when you say something could delay, could cancel their flights, of course can make them nervous. but thankfully, that was a very short lived ground stop that we experienced early this morning. and it didn't lead to any trouble here at sfo. the lines were long at the start of the morning today, but as you can see behind me, just outside the american airlines check in area, the first terminal here at the airport, not too much going on. and that's exactly how we want to see it. just a few minutes after 8:00 on christmas eve morning. now, there was a short window where the timing of the flights was threatened. it was american airlines reporting a tech issue nationwide, calling for a grounding at every airport. and some people in other places reported being removed from planes deemed deplaned from their planes as they were just getting ready to take off. but that's somewhat

rushed to help, and later at least one victim had to be taken to a hospital by helicopter. heavenly mountain resort said in a statement, in part, quote, the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident. what caused the accident is still unclear right now. workers were seen inspecting the wheels on a lift pole after the accident, but it's unknown if this was part of the cause. we'll update you as we learn more. >> the san joaquin county sheriff's department says someone in a stolen car managed to survive a violent crash with only minor injuries. the car he was driving smashed into a pole, split in two following a high-speed chase. the sheriff's office released these photos of the crash in manteca sunday afternoon. deputies say the driver refused to stop after they saw him driving that stolen car. the driver lost control and crashed while trying to evade authorities. let's hope there's nothing like that happening on our bay area roadways. let's take a peek at 880 in the heart of oakland here, just past the oakland coliseum, north and southbound. flowing well, of course. wet roads. of course, your windshield wipers might be going on intermittent. we had some very, very heavy rain in

the overnight hours, which means you might see some standing water and not just in the east bay, possibly in the south bay as well. here's what's happening on 280, in san jose near highway 87. again, you can see a bit of a blur thanks to rain on the camera lens, but very much similar story here. and then finally, everybody wants to know what's happening at the bay bridge, right? this sort of tells the story of the morning commute. and that's the case. a similar scene, cars making it through. no concern with congestion, but again, possibly standing water. some water kicking up in front of you thanks to the guy in front of you. just take it slow if you can. but boy, people are still talking about that mess we had on highway 24 yesterday morning. a van caught fire in the right eastbound bore of the caldecott tunnel. you can actually see an awful lot of thick black smoke. there was a bit of flame in that video there from citizen app a moment ago. it happened around 10:00 in the right of the tunnel, and that fire shut down east bay highway 24 between oakland and orinda for about two hours. thank goodness no one was hurt. we are still working to learn exactly what caused that fire. >> 809 happening today, chp begins its maximum enforcement

child and an adult were injured during a shootout on the roads tied to a custody battle. it happened yesterday afternoon, just before noon, just right near contra costa boulevard and vivian drive. police say a seven year old suffered minor injuries during what officers describe as a rolling gun battle between the child's parents. the adult was wounded in the shootout, is expected to recover. both parents arrested are now facing multiple charges. >> the salvation army says it's now scrambling to help people in time for the holidays because of a shooting and break-in at two separate locations in san francisco. it's thrown them off schedule a bit. the shooting happened at the bayview location. the door is now boarded up. across town on the same day, the battery from a salvation army food delivery truck was stolen. while no one was hurt and the battery is replaceable, it's putting the team in a time crunch. >> it's just unfortunate that people would do something like that. i mean, you see that it's a, you know, a cause to help the less fortunate. and then you are just, you know, stealing from them or taking away from that. >> local volunteers are loading up and shipping out about 4000

bummer if we would have missed our flight, but thank goodness we didn't. >> anyone heading to the airport this morning is being urged to contact the airline due to the christmas eve rush. let's get a look now at other airlines flying in and out of the bay area right now. sfo there are 56 flight delays and one cancellation, according to flightaware. the oakland airport showed eight delays and no cancellations in san jose. mineta has 12 delays and no cancellations. we'll have live updates looking at just how busy sfo is all morning. >> five people were injured in a ski lift accident in south lake tahoe yesterday afternoon. now, experts are urging people to be careful and prepared before they head out to the mountains. accidents like the one we saw yesterday can be alarming, of course, but experts say chairlift malfunctions don't happen that often. i talked with a snow and mountain safety advocate in the past hour of mornings on two. jamie tartt said we all need to be aware when we're out on the slopes. what is the number one thing you see on the slopes? >> a lack of situational awareness. the big one is people in front of you have the right of way. you know you have no

people in oakland are recovering from a brazen carjacking. it happened on east 12th street on third avenue around 4:30 p.m. officers tried to stop the suspected carjacker who drove off. that vehicle then hit another car, injuring several people inside the second vehicle. the suspect tried to run away but was quickly captured. the main beaches in santa cruz county remain closed this morning after part of the santa cruz municipal wharf collapsed into the ocean. there are concerns about the potential for even more major storm damage later today. three people working on the wharf fell into the monterey bay when the portion collapsed. lifeguards rescued two, while the third was able to get out on his own. >> the crash of a tesla cybertruck in piedmont last month that killed three young people is raising questions about the unique vehicle safety features. experts say many people who drive or ride in teslas may not know how difficult it can be to escape one if the vehicle catches fire. when battery power is lost, they have to use a manual release to open the doors in some evs. a double pull of the latch will open the door. but in the

the sun's surface. it was launched back in 2018 and has traveled about 90 million miles to reach the sun's outermost atmosphere, also known as the corona. solar storms and the corona release huge amounts of electromagnetic radiation into space, which can affect satellites, gps, and other technology here on earth. scientists hope the data collected by parker will help them better understand these events. >> being able to understand the physics is the next step to being able to eventually predict when one of these things is going to get to us, how strong is it going to be and what's the impact going to be? >> parker is a state of the art heat shield that protects scientific equipment from temperatures exceeding 1 million degrees. nasa says if things go as planned, the spacecraft will continue to gather data on the sun for several more years. >> baseball fans across the bay area and beyond are reflecting on the life and legacy of oakland a's great rickey henderson. henderson died on friday. since then, people have been creating an impromptu memorial at the gates of the oakland coliseum. candles, signs
