[music] let's check the conditions at this noon hour. live pictures. interstate 880, in oakland. interstate 80 at soda springs and sfo. today. travel is expected to be light tomorrow, though christmas day and hanukkah. folks heading home or to a loved ones place before the holiday? well, crisis averted. holiday travel was slightly disrupted this morning, almost causing problems for people flying in and out of sfo. ktvu james torres talked with weary travelers happy they had one fewer flight issue to deal with. >> but one perk of living on the west coast is when we have these early morning ground stops, something that might affect flights nationwide. it happens early enough that it doesn't affect too many flights here in the san francisco bay area, fliers antsy to get on their flights. it's the morning of christmas eve, so lines and wait times may be unpredictable. >> this is a little surprising. i haven't seen sfo like this in a long time. >> yeah, some did expect those massive lines and overly planned

ahead. >> yes, that's why we are like two hours early here, but it seems like it's not that bad right now. >> a short scare for american airlines passengers. the airline experiencing a system wide tech problem. the faa called for a nationwide grounding at other airports across the country in different time zones. passengers reported deplaning flights or canceled trips. thankfully, none of that happened at sfo. >> i mean, it would have been a bummer for sure because we're traveling so last minute. so tonight's christmas eve, it would have definitely been a bummer if we would have missed our flight, but thank goodness we didn't. >> operations at the airport, american airlines and beyond continued business as usual as everyone hoped for. no more disruptions this holiday travel season. reporting from sfo, i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, now to the weather forecast here locally, giving you a live look across the oakland estuary. much better conditions right now with the sun peeking out just a tad.

let's check in with meteorologist roberto gonzalez to find out if the worst is behind us yet. >> pretty much. but because of the heavy rain that did fall and accumulate early this morning, this just in. we do have a flood advisory until 115 this afternoon. just in about an hour from now for this area. this is around the novato area and then also until about 130, the napa sonoma region, and also just in portions of alameda county, primarily around oakland, where we have seen over three quarters of an inch of rain between 4:00 this morning and 9:00 this morning. so it's causing some urban and small stream flooding around the vicinity. now, just how much rain has accumulated? take a look. this is just since 4:00 this morning over an inch in mount veeder, which is on the eastern slope of napa county in the mayacamas mountain range. ben lomas, santa cruz, la honda. there you have over 8/10 of an inch of rain. same story in milpitas and at 3600ft, mount

diablo, oakland. there you have the precipitation totals san jose with over half an inch of rainfall, and san francisco with over 4/10. when is the last time you have seen just such widespread, impressive totals all at once? this was certainly not just a north bay event. and here is that cold front that is clashing with the atmospheric river conditions. we had the warm air mass over the greater lake tahoe area, and then the colder air mass filtering in. and the end result is at 5:00 this morning, lightning was sparked and then the rain transitioned into snow, where we have a winter weather advisory in effect until 7 p.m. tonight. ten inches of snow anticipated down to 6000ft. and then it's still raining here. locally, we have precipitation lining around the central bay. there you have the heavier rainfall from hayward all the way into the livermore area. doppler radar does suggest that we have precipitation in earnest around richmond. and if you're traveling for this christmas eve, anything to the north and to the east, you've got rain showers, anything across

[music] hold your. traditionally, the service starts around midnight, but due to the pontiff's age, today's ceremony began at 7 p.m. rome time. that's 10 p.m. pacific time. the pope turned 88 a week ago. the service also launches jubilee 2025, a year of catholic celebrations set to draw more than 30 million pilgrims to the vatican. he's expected to call for peace worldwide, particularly in the middle east. after this mass. pope francis will deliver his christmas day blessing tomorrow. churches in the bay area are holding special holiday masses

today. for example, grace cathedral in san francisco will hold a service beginning at 1030 tonight. it starts with a musical prelude featuring the cathedral choir of men and boys and a full orchestra. the actual service will go from 11 p.m. to 1230 wednesday morning, and will be simulcast on grace cathedral's web page. new at noon, glide foundation and san francisco's house of prime rib right now holding their special christmas eve brunch. 3,000 pounds of prime rib and side dishes are expected to be served this afternoon in glide's dining room. volunteers are also delivering 200 meals to encampments across the city to serve 1800 meals inside this building and serving out to people who are in need. >> we're so excited about it. >> line volunteers also serving 2400 meals tomorrow on christmas day, some folks and some families in oakland. special holiday visit this morning from oakland police officers. members of the oakland police union helped santa deliver toys and food to families in need. the

union's christmas basket program is part of a 30 year old tradition. the families were picked by the officers themselves. they loaded their police vehicles with food and toys and are delivering them across the city. happening today chp begins its maximum enforcement period at 6 p.m. officers on the road will look out for signs of people driving under the influence, speeding or distracted driving. drivers could also be ticketed for not wearing seatbelts, chp says. last year, officers arrested more than 900 people for driving under the influence over the three day christmas weekend. heightened enforcement ends midnight on christmas day. right now, santa cruz officials are holding a zoom call to discuss how to recover from the damage caused by monday's storm. the main beaches of santa cruz county remain closed this noon, after a 150 foot section of the municipal wharf collapsed into the ocean. and right now, there's concern about the potential for even more major damage. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> this was the scene early yesterday afternoon as a powerful ocean wave battered the

santa cruz county coast. authorities say two people who fell into the water from that 150 foot section of the wharf, a third person got out on their own. several people were fishing on the pier when they suddenly collapsed. >> we noticed that the pier was swaying a lot and it was. we heard a lot of cracking, but we didn't think much of it. and then all of a sudden it literally it all fell into the water and like there was people on it as well. a lot of construction workers, they were on the pier and it fell into the water and it sounded like thunder. >> first responders say the construction workers who fell into the water suffered minor injuries. that section of the wharf was already closed to visitors due to earlier storm damage. south of santa cruz, one man died after being trapped under debris caused by yesterday's high surf. an evacuation order was in effect all along the santa cruz coast. one woman was staying at a hotel in capitola for her mother's funeral. when she got the order to pack up and leave. >> i was told at first that it

was just going to be temporary, and now i'm told i've got to go find another place to stay tonight and who knows how long. >> an evacuation order for the affected area was lifted earlier this morning. this afternoon? still no word on what caused the accident. on a ski lift that injured five people at heavenly mountain resort in south lake tahoe. the victims were heading up the mountain for another run when something caused two chairs to collide. witnesses took these photos. they told us a chair on the comet express lift reportedly slid back into another. >> we could see about 15. quite a few emt are all the medics that were there surrounding someone. >> another witness told us off camera he saw what looked like a pile of bodies beneath the chair. witnesses say they saw around 15 to 30 ski patrollers rushed to help, and later at least one victim had to be taken to a hospital by helicopter. now, heavenly mountain resort said in a statement, in part, quote, the safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident. workers were seen inspecting the wheels on a lift

deal with hilton hotels in san francisco. this is the last of the labor disputes involving some of the city's largest hotels. workers at hyatt and marriott recently agreed to new contracts calling for salary raises, keeping their health plans and adding protections against understaffing and workload increases. we interviewed one worker who says she's thrilled that after more than three months on the picket lines, she and her colleagues could soon return to work. >> my husband worked in the same hotel, too, so both we are on strike and we have to take a time to drop my kids to school and then pick it up. but we win. that's it for today. very excited. christmas eve now. and that's the best gift for everybody. >> the hilton union vote goes until 3:00 this afternoon. a yes vote would end the 93 day

strike. terms of the proposal are the same as those ratified by hyatt and marriott workers. the salvation army says it's now scrambling to help people in time for the holidays. that's because of a shooting and break-in at two separate locations in san francisco. it's thrown them off schedule. the shooting happened at the bayview location. the door is now boarded up there across town, and on the same day, the battery from a salvation army food delivery truck was stolen. while no one was hurt and the battery is replaceable, it's putting the team in a time crunch. >> it's unfortunate that people would do something like that. i mean, you see that it's a, you know, a cause to help the less fortunate. [music] and then you are just, you know, stealing from them or taking away from that. >> local volunteers are loading up and shipping out over 4000 meals for seniors this christmas, all prepared by students of the organization's culinary training academy. this comes at a hard time, as the charity reports a 30% decline in donations this year so far. sf police say they have no leads in either case. on this christmas eve, some caregivers are going beyond their usual duties to make sure the senior citizens they work with receive more than their needed medical care. ktvu is an rubin has more on how they're putting on their santa hats and offering help and holiday cheer. >> the lights, the decorations around the holiday. steve lawrence used to do it all at his home in san jose. >> oh, yeah, i used to, really. i used to get into it when i was able bodied, but a stroke left the marine corps veteran with left side paralysis and his wife ella passed away. >> now, trimming a tree just isn't in the cards for the 81 year old. that's where the organization senior helpers comes in. >> we're always trying to figure out where we can help out, what we can do to put in a little extra effort with people. >> and while they provide non-medical in-home care year round, they realized during the holidays their clients were really missing something. >> and during the holidays, that gap gets really big. >> like, you know, the seniors

perhaps offer to help a neighbor in need in san jose. ann rubin ktvu, fox two news. >> live outside right now to look at the golden gate bridge. you can see traffic is flowing smoothly there. the weather is looking a lot different to what we woke up to earlier today. let's check in with roberto gonzalez who's tracking santa, who's going to be making a move into the bay area later tonight when it gets dark out. >> yes. and a lot of the kids have been very concerned because of today's very ominous rain. and also a lot of parents have been trying to keep up with the forecast as well. well, as we venture into christmas day, waking up to mostly cloudy conditions, but then we will have a break. we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy with peeks of sunshine during christmas day and also for hanukkah, then turning mostly cloudy by nightfall as another system comes up and gets ready to move into the bay area. live weather camera. boy, we have plenty of cloud cover and we still have some rain showers. and because of that flood advisory until 115 right here

for the novato area, over here for napa and sonoma until 130 and 145 for the oakland area, with some urban and small stream flooding taking place right now. so here's the area of low pressure. it cut through the bay area early this morning between about one and 4:00, and then it just kept ramping up and raining as it traversed and moved into the greater lake tahoe area. it started off as rain, then as the cooler air spilled over the warmer air mass, we saw several lightning strikes and then the rain transitioned on over to snow. and that's why we have a winter weather advisory in place for the greater lake tahoe area. down to 6000ft. we're talking about ten inches of snow today and about 18in of snow above 8000ft. more snow after christmas on thursday. so here's the deal. here's your storm tracker, where we have spotty hit and miss scattered showers right now around portola valley and portions of the peninsula backing through west menlo park. as we go upstream to the north bay again, scattered precipitation from santa rosa through petaluma all the way

into novato and san rafael, then over in the eastern portion of our bay area, some pretty big cells have been developing over the tri-valley, primarily around that nasty five 8680 corridor. that's always very dangerous when wet. bottom line is we will have the rain showers tapering off to gradual clearing. and i'm not saying clearing of the skies, just clearing out of the rain tomorrow dry christmas and it will be dry for hanukkah. clouding back up again with rain developing on thursday. currently we are into the 50s across the board. novato is picking up a wind gusts up to 22mph. the winds will remain with us throughout the day today. waves up to 14ft off the coast. very dangerous. and this is why we have the high surf warning in effect until 6:00 tonight. and that's for the entire northern california coastline. so please be very mindful and stay away from the coast. area of low pressure behind it here where you see this clearing slot. that's your christmas day and hanukkah and this is your thursday storm

the eggs have not been sold on the west coast, just in some southern states. california's public health agencies are alerting residents about the threat of bird flu during the holiday season. this comes after the first reported human case in los angeles county. health officers say the infected person was an adult who was exposed to infected livestock at a work site, and that the person is now recovering at a home with mild symptoms. public health experts stress the public threat to the public is generally low right now. there are some things to keep in mind, though, especially during the holidays. >> general precautions like staying away from any kind of, you know, birds that look infected or just being very careful around relatives that have exposure to livestock. >> this is the 36th human bird flu case in california this year. those cases include a child in alameda county who was infected by an unknown source. governor newsom declared a state of emergency because of the bird flu. last week on this christmas eve, you may want to get your last minute errands done early because many businesses have

reduced their hours. the u.s. postal service will open during its regular hours. some grocery stores, pharmacies and banks are open today, but with modified hours. double check with your local store for location specific changes or updates. apple is poised to become the first company to cross the $4 trillion threshold. the cupertino based company has pulled ahead of nvidia and microsoft in the race for this milestone. analysts say it's due to a nearly 16% jump in apple shares since early november. that added more than $500 billion to its market capitalization. today, apple closed at just over $258 a share. the san francisco ferry building is preparing for a new restaurant, according to the san francisco chronicle. the building is preparing to undergo some renovations to accommodate for a full service dining option. reims bakery and red bay coffee announced they'd be closing at the end of january. the two spaces will be combined to build a kitchen and extra seating. the ferry building says construction will take about a year. a tenant has not been named for the space. in recent

it's been quite a scene this morning at san francisco international airport. here's a live look at the airport right now. a lot of hustling and bustling on christmas eve. we just checked flightaware and it reports that there are currently 77 delays and one cancellation at the airport right now. the situation is much better at the other two major airports here in the bay area. according to flightaware, oakland international airport has 11 delays and no cancellations, while san jose mineta has 18 delays and no cancellations. tonight's christmas eve, it would have definitely been a bummer if we would have missed our flight, but thank goodness we didn't. >> the american airlines ground stoppage was resolved in about an hour and flights continued normally. the sonoma county fire department had to rescue three people after a big wave swept them off the edge of scottsdale scotties creek. you can see just how strong that rush of water is as it came up to the creek there. the force of it carried two people about 150 yards up the creek. we don't know if the three people were injured. sonoma county firefighters are urging people to remember to never turn their back on water or ocean. five people were injured in a ski lift accident in south lake tahoe in this noon. experts are urging people to be careful and prepare before heading out to the mountains. accidents like the one we saw yesterday can be alarming, but experts say chairlift malfunctions don't happen very often. earlier on mornings on two, we spoke with a snow and mountain safety advocate, jamie tartt, who, about how to be aware while out on the slopes. >> what is the number one thing

you see on the slopes? >> a lack of situational awareness. the big one is people in front of you have the right of way. you know you have no dedicated space in front of you, so just slow down and take it easy, especially in the you know, when the slopes get crowded during the holiday season, sometimes it's better to just stop for a second and look around and enjoy where you are. >> tartt also says it's crucial to wear a helmet, and that ski and snowboard helmets have come a long way. they're not designed now to be much more lighter and less bulky. he also says use the buddy system just in case cell phone service is bad during an emergency, so you'll have someone who can go and get help from a ski patrol. well, people in oakland are recovering from a brazen carjacking. it happened yesterday on east 12th street and third avenue around 4:30 p.m. officer tries to stop the suspect who drove off that vehicle, then hit another car, injuring several people inside the second vehicle. the suspect tried to run away but was quickly captured. the crash of a tesla cybertruck in piedmont last month that killed three young people, raising questions

about the unique vehicle's safety features, experts say. many people who drive or ride in teslas may not realize how difficult it could be to escape if their vehicle catches fire. when battery power is lost, they'd have to use a manual release to open the doors and some evs. a double pull of the latch will open the door. but in the cybertruck, as tesla's website shows, the front door release is in front of the window switches. the back door release is in a side pocket underneath the panel. >> really absurd to expect humans in situations where there is a fire and seconds matter, to be able to look in their owner's manual and figure out how they're going to open a manual door release that's hidden. >> a video posted by all set collision of florida showed it took a person inside more than 12 seconds to break the cybertruck's reinforced glass and escape using a type of hammer that people carry in their cars for emergencies. chp

and ntsb are investigating the piedmont crash now. police in pleasant hill say a child and an adult were injured during a shootout on the roads tied to a custody battle. it happened yesterday afternoon, just before noon near contra costa boulevard and vivian drive. police say a seven year old suffered minor injuries during what officers are describing as a rolling car battle between the children's parents. an adult was wounded in the shootout and is expected to recover. both parents were arrested and are facing multiple charges. the legal battle involving alec baldwin's role in the death of a cinematographer on a movie set is officially over. a new mexico prosecutor dropped the effort to appeal the dismissal of involuntary manslaughter charges against the actor. the case initially fell apart in july, when a judge ruled prosecutors hid evidence important to the case. in a statement, prosecutors said the attorney general's office was not interested in taking the case any further. baldwin's lawyers say the dropped case is final proof that he did not commit a crime. former president

bill clinton is back home this afternoon after he was briefly admitted to a washington, d.c, hospital for fever. a family spokesperson says the 78 year old former president was discharged this morning, and that both he and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the medical team at georgetown university hospital. mr. trump was hospitalized yesterday, or clinton was hospitalized yesterday after testing an observation here in 2021. he spent six days in a california hospital after an infection spread to his bloodstream. u.s. lawmakers are pushing to ban two of china's top drone makers from selling drones in the us. the ban would apply to all new drones sold by china based dji technology and autel robotics. lawmakers say the two companies have no ties to the chinese communist party and pose a security threat to americans. dji is the largest drone manufacturer in the world. lawmakers also say the low cost chinese devices are hurting the u.s. drone industry. people who use these drones say lawmakers need to be more transparent about why they are proposing a

way. the irs announcing a plan to issue a total of $2.4 billion in special payments to nearly 1 million taxpayers. but there are limits. the plan calls for payouts to those who did not claim federal stimulus checks on their tax returns. for 2021, you're still eligible for now. in a recent interview, treasury secretary janet yellen explained the rationale for initiating the economic relief started during the peak of the covid pandemic. >> we saw cars lined up in parking lots at food banks. >> people were really hurting despite higher prices and inflation. yellen maintains the economy is churning. she credits the continuing covid relief efforts, including the recovery rebate credits, for still helping taxpayers today. >> we acted very quickly to alleviate the suffering the pandemic had caused and to support the economy, and the consequence was that we enjoyed the fastest and strongest

>> hyundai is helping owners of its electric cars get more access to chargers. the company says it will send customers who have bought or leased an ev before january 31st, a free charging adapter that would let them access tesla's supercharger network. the adapter will enable hyundais to access more than 20,000 tesla superchargers in the u.s. the free adapters will be available to eligible owners of the 2024 models, as well as earlier models of the kona electric iconic hatchback and ioniq five and ioniq six two. some 2025 models are also eligible. a warning to drivers in santa rosa police will begin phasing in the state's new daylight parking lot. the law goes into effect statewide january 1st. the goal is to improve visibility at intersections and driveways. it creates a 20 foot no parking zone at crosswalks to help make them easier and safer for pedestrians. santa rosa police will take a phased approach to enforcement. in the beginning, warnings will be issued. full enforcement, including giving regular citations, will begin

[applause] >> 12 year old stella seek performs as a butterfly in the nutcracker. dancers have been rehearsing for the production since october. this holiday season, the company is marking its 20th year of helgi thomason's nutcracker. [music] the former artistic director set this production in san francisco, inspired by the panama-pacific international exposition, a world's fair held

in 1915, thomasen led the sf ballet for 37 years. the nutcracker is his tribute to san francisco. >> it means so much to the city and the audience. bay area, clipping through, producing a flood advisory. now it expires at 115 right around this area, the novato area, the napa and sonoma area at 130 and 145. and portions of alameda county, basically around the oakland area, approaching three quarters of an inch of rain this morning alone. so here is the front. and as it carved its path through the bay area this morning and made tracks at 5:00 this morning, and the greater lake tahoe area producing thunderstorm activity. and then as the colder air mass overran that colder, that warmer air mass in place, it did start to transition into snow. and that's where we're at now. rain showers still in earnest around the peninsula and moving out of the santa cruz mountain area. we do have the rain showers from san mateo through woodside into east palo alto and palo alto as well heading to the north bay. random scattered showers. and then i was noticing a cell just sitting over the pleasanton livermore area closer to right there, the
