beloved san francisco institution, house of prime rib, served a full house on christmas eve. many diners made reservations a year in advance. on this night, there was a three hour wait for a table for walk ins. >> for the last seating at 10 p.m. this place has been the same since i was a kid, and i mean everything has stayed about the same. i can always count on the food being delicious, and i go home like a little too full, actually. >> san francisco native drew babcock continues his family tradition of dining at the house of prime rib every christmas eve. the restaurant said on christmas eve they will serve 1000 people, not including its to go orders. >> it's a family restaurant so we have people come in. i've been here 20 years from when they were young until they're old, you know? so we have multiple generations out here. >> in chinatown, the 32nd annual kung pao kosher comedy dinner show was a sellout. the three day run features four comedians and a multi-course meal every night at the imperial palace restaurant. >> it's amazing. and i've been doing this for 32 years, and i thought it was going to be a one off, and then it just got popular. i mean, for the first year it was popular and kept selling out, and i kept adding days and shows and it brings people together. it's community. you don't have to be jewish. >> proceeds will benefit the chinatown ymca food pantry and shalom bayit, an organization dedicated to domestic violence prevention in north beach. the pews were full at saints peter and paul church during mass in the evening. fourth generation san franciscan robert icardi brought his family, including his three children. >> i'm of italian and irish descent, and my family's been here since 1921, and saints peter and paul church and school has been part of our family. and so besides regularly going mass but just the family, 5 p.m. mass

you, merry, merry christmas. >> williams and wilmore are on board the international space station. they've been stuck there for eight months after what was supposed to be an eight day mission. nasa says the pair won't return until the end of march or even april, because of a delay in bringing in new astronauts to replace them. the famed notre dame cathedral celebrated christmas eve mass for the first time in five years. the cathedral was almost destroyed by a fire in 2019. the 12th century paris landmark held four different masses. today, about 2000 people attended each of the first two masses of the day, and there were hundreds of people still in line who were turned away. notre dame cathedral was rebuilt thanks to a massive fundraising effort. people around the world donated almost $1 billion to rebuild it after that fire. >> shoppers flocked to stores around the bay area today, buying last minute gifts for friends and relatives. one of the most popular spots was san francisco's union square. as ktvu christien kafton shows us,

officers. members of the oakland police union helped santa deliver toys and food to families in need. the union's christmas basket program is part of a 30 year old tradition. the families were picked by the officers themselves. they loaded their police vehicles with food and toys and delivered them across the city. >> new. at ten a group of burglars broke into a home early this morning in the east bay. surveillance video shows multiple people walking up to that home before making their way inside. moments later, the thieves could be seen leaving through the garage with several items in their hands. the homeowner tells ktvu that there were, quote, many items taken, although they didn't specify exactly what. oakland police say they are aware of the break-in, but no arrests have been reported. the california highway patrol says officers arrested more than 100 people and recovered more than 700 stolen items in a statewide bust on friday. the goal to target organized retail theft. the chp says officers also recovered three stolen vehicles and two illegal firearms in that operation. it spanned several cities in southern california

and the bay area, including walnut creek, livermore, and san ramon. it was carried out by the chp organized retail crime task force. >> three east bay business owners are cleaning up the mess and assessing the damage. burglars broke in and stole everything from money to crates of fresh eggs. surveillance video captured each of the break ins. ktvu. josé horta brings us the latest on the investigation now underway. >> a brazen start to christmas eve at elio's family restaurant, where surveillance video captures five suspects in three different vehicles. breaking in. >> pried the officer open and proceeded to cut into the safe. >> second generation owner james iliopoulos tells us the team of suspects surprises the cook and tells him to get out. they get away with $3,000 tequila and several cartons full of eggs, which are now hard to come by. >> it gets under my skin. no one, no one likes it. you feel violated. someone comes in, they break in your door. it's your house. basically. i grew up

place where i want people to come and share their passion that they have. >> the loss about $10,000 worth of damage and merchandise. it's not the first smash and grab here, and shoplifting is becoming common. >> it just makes it more difficult to keep going and keep running into things and support a family off of it. >> adding to the loss, he's missing out on last minute shoppers. now, one of those suspects ended up in the hospital after that car chase with police ended in a crash in san leandro. ktvu fox two news. >> a deadly shooting in vallejo is now under investigation. police were called to at shooting inside a building ar broadway and louisiatreets around one this morning. once on scene, they fnd a man who had been shot. officers say he died at thecene the victim has not yet been identified. it is unclear what led to the shooting, and no arrests have been reported. >> a federal judge has paved the way for a trial to move forward against the city of san jose. the judge ruled that a jury can consider the use of a san jose

police k-9 as deadly force. the incident happened back in 2020. anthony paredes was suspected of shoplifting. he hid in a trash can to avoid police. court records show the police dog bit paredes neck during the arrest, and did not release him for more than a minute. industry standards call for police dogs to release a bite within 10s. the same k-9 also failed to respond to 22 verbal commands by his police handler in the past. san jose police officer michael jeffrey had sworn in his court declaration that the dog had, quote, never failed to release a bite in the field. the judge's 31 page ruling suggested officer jeffrey wasn't being truthful about that claim. the lawyer representing paredes says there's never been a ruling quite like this because we have provided video evidence of prior deployments of the same canine, on the same canine team, with the same officers who swore that the dog had never released from a bite on command before. >> where the dog fails to release a total of 22 different times, it calls into question

the honesty and integrity of the officers involved, and it certainly calls into question the judgment of the san jose top brass who are allowing such things as this to continue. >> paredes suffered permanent damage to his windpipe and thyroid after the incident. the san jose city attorney wouldn't comment on the specifics of the case, but said the jury isn't bound by the judge's ruling and can decide whatever it wants. a jury trial is now expected to start on february 4th. >> these pilings are really long. they're large, they're heavy. >> cleanup and recovery begins in santa cruz after the coast was battered by strong waves. the work underway to prevent further damage. >> and our holiday celebrations will be joined by high surf and frosty temps. we'll have a breakdown of what you can expect coming up. >> lottery fever hits on christmas eve. the jackpot? over $1 billion. i'l ve the

won at all. but it's christmas eve. it's my late father's birthday, so i bought my own tickets. i haven't checked the numbers yet. i could be that one california winner, but i'll let you know. >> don't forget it. don't forget about us if you are the winner, lamonica. we wish you all the best. thanks for that report. well, three people are safe tonight after they were rescued by members of the sonoma county fire district. they happened to be in the right place at the right time. the fire district posted this video of the rushing water at scott's creek near bodega bay on monday. a wave swept the three people off the edge, carrying two of them about 150 yards up that creek. a third person clung to a rock nearby. two deputy chiefs who were dropping dinners off at the bodega bay station, responded to the call and helped pull everyone out to safety. >> powerful waves along the santa cruz county coastline yesterday led to the death of a man on the shore, and the partial collapse of the santa cruz wharf. ktvu jesse gary shows us the cleanup efforts now underway and the challenges ahead.

>> for the work on the dock by the bay in santa cruz tuesday is salvaging vessels tossed like toys from the water by a strong storm surge. >> i don't think the damage was too bad. i think everything is mostly just scratches, you know, with the help of all the people from yesterday and all of sean's friends that came out and helped us, i think we dodged a bullet. >> those bullets are literally torpedo sized pieces of debris that are washing ashore. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> monday, a 150 foot section of the iconic santa cruz wharf sank into the pacific due to large swells. >> we are currently assessing and working towards understanding what structural integrity metrics need to be evaluated. as we work with our consultants and our contract engineering firms. >> debris from the wharf now floods surrounding waterways and has washed up onto some roadways. >> these pilings are really long. they're large, they're heavy. if we have another surge

or, you know, storm system that comes through, the surge can actually carry those pilings. and if they hit a boat the wrong way, that boat can sink and go down. >> harbormaster blake anderson says over a dozen boats now sit at the bottom, and 200 have sustained damage. so it's all hands on deck to clear debris and safeguard the roughly 900 remaining vessels. >> if we can get some of these pilings from the wharf that are that are floating around in the harbor out to prevent damage to other boats, we're we're prioritizing that right now. >> three men sent into the frigid water when the wharf collapsed have recovered from their minor injuries. their rescuers are said to be with family for the holiday. in an emailed statement, the santa cruz fire marine unit says two of its lifeguard lieutenants witnessed the wharf collapse from their patrol point, called it in and started to initiate rescue efforts. they removed the victims from harm's way and visually cleared the debris field. back at the harbor, boaters continue checking for damage. >> i won't know for sure until we pull it out of the water to

the company $100 million in taxes in the past five years. >> the chronicle reports the rideshare company says the city's tax calculations wrongly included driver compensation as part of its revenue. the complaint was filed friday. lyft says the city calculated its taxes from 2019 to 2023, based on the total amount of money that passengers paid for rides, which is not how the company says its business model works, the chronicle reports. the legal debate comes as a broader, years long controversy around how gig economy companies like lyft and uber should be taxed due to their reliance on independent contractors instead of traditional employees. in a statement, a lyft spokesperson says, quote, lyft doesn't take operating in san francisco for granted, and we love serving both riders and drivers in our hometown city. but we believe the city is incorrect with how it calculated our gross receipts tax for the years 2019 to 2023. we filed this lawsuit to help

correct this issue while we continue to serve riders and drivers in san francisco. the company is now seeking refunds for the amount it says it overpaid. the last group of striking san francisco hotel workers today voted to approve a new contract, ending a 93 day strike for hilton employees. >> the union says the new four year contract includes an immediate $3 an hour pay increase, with more raises throughout the life of the contract. it also added protections against understaffing and workload increases and preserves health insurance. we interviewed one worker who said she's thrilled that after more than three months on the picket lines, she and her colleagues can soon return to work. >> my husband worked in the same hotel, too, so. but we are on strike and we have to take a time to drop my kids to school and then pick it up. but we win. that's it for today. very excited. christmas eve now and

5 overtimes to south florida. >> what a game. well, some men incarcerated at solano state prison were given the gift of a second chance this holiday season. the golden state warriors launched a first of its kind partnership in the u-s. >> the unique program uses basketball and coaching fundamentals as a way to teach life skills and prepare the men for life. after release. i spent a day at the prison to see the program firsthand. the sun rises on a new day at california state prison solano, inside the general population facility in vacaville. nearly 4000 incarcerated men are serving sentences for a range of offenses under the watchful eye of officers from the california department of corrections and rehabilitation. >> hard missing your family trying to get home. >> it's tough having a lovely wife and daughter that supports me and that needs me dearly, and having to be in here. >> when you're incarcerated, you lose everything. >> but on this day, 16 men have found a new mindset.

sentenced to life without parole and says this program is a highlight and an escape from the norm. >> to get away from just. prison. everything the talking, the yard, dealing with everything inside the housing units, the program's primary focus may be basketball, but it's clear to everyone involved the lessons run far deeper than a game. we can take these skills to the street. we can take these skills and talk to at risk youth. talk to grown ups as well. >> it's very useful for when i want to coach the guys on the yard, and even when i want to teach my daughter some drills. >> in six weeks, the men will graduate, equipped with new skills to coach and lead clinics of their own. [applause] another byproduct teaching teamwork between a group of diverse men who may not always see eye to eye on the yard, may not talk to one another on the yard. >> but because of this, we're getting to know one another and building camaraderie. >> we might belong to different
