>> welcome to mornings on two i'm andre senior. it's wednesday christmas day. thank you for joining us. roberto gonzalez she's up now with your christmas day forecast. good morning to you and merry christmas to you. >> hi. merry christmas up now i don't think i went to bed last night. good to be here with you, andre. and good morning everybody. merry christmas, happy hanukkah. we do have a frost advisory in place right now right here. but temperatures aren't too bad. 38 degrees currently in santa rosa as well as the tri valley. it is now 39 degrees in walnut creek, streaming into alamo and blackrock, 45 in san jose, and mid 40s at sfo. these temperatures are up to 13 and 16 degrees cooler than just 24 hours ago, so you're going to feel the chill in the air as you head on out to church this morning. i wanted to emphasize that yesterday we did see widespread heavy rainfall up to about an inch of rain in the santa cruz mountains. but take a look at livermore with approaching a half an inch. san jose over half an inch of rain. and the reason why i mentioned

this is because of the cold temperatures. you could be experiencing some black ice out there. please take note of that, especially on highway 17 making tracks towards santa cruz officials. sun up 723 boys at a glorious start. your christmas day forecast does have some peeks of sunshine throughout the day today with the increasing cloud deck, and that will lead to rain showers for your thursday. calm winds currently and winds will not be a factor today. they will be westerly up to five perhaps. maybe a gust up to ten, but that's about it. currently, a three mile per hour wind noted in the mountain view area. high surf advisory. this goes into place. it's no longer a warning, but advisory for thursday all the way through the weekend. sunday at 4 p.m, those swells will build up to 22ft. again, please be mindful of keeping your visitors, your family members visiting from out of town, away from the coastline, beginning tomorrow through sunday. temperatures today in the 50s. a much cooler day than what we experienced so

far this week. hey, andre, next time around, we'll include the tahoe forecast for people heading to the mountains. >> all right, roberto, we'll check in with you then. all right, now let's look at the roads this morning. as you would expect, not many cars on the roads. look here at interstate 880, right by the coliseum. traffic flowing smoothly in both directions on this christmas morning. the bay bridge toll plaza. right now, let's take a look at that live picture so we can see how the traffic is looking there. and a rare sight. nothing there. not a shock to anyone. and if you were driving through there, you're probably very happy. and some bay area folks went up to the mountains to celebrate the holidays. here's a live picture from a caltrans camera in tahoe city. rain and snow in the forecast. there's already plenty of snow as you see there on the ground, which will make for great skiing. but be careful if you're driving up there. our top breaking news right now a possible bird strike on a passenger plane led to a crash today in kazakhstan. in the city of aktau, at least 67 people were on board the plane. rescuers say at least 30 people are dead, and at least 28 others

to you, james. merry christmas andre. >> good morning to you and merry christmas to you. well behind me here we will soon see a line of cars getting ready to pick up a number of different meals. more than 4000 meals will be delivered just today, this morning, all thanks to the efforts put together by the salvation army and its volunteers. joining me to talk a lot more about that is major matthew madsen. we appreciate you being up this early and doing what you do and talking to us today. what is this all about? why are you guys doing this and why do you do this every year? >> well good morning and merry christmas. merry christmas. we do this every year because that's what the salvation army does. we serve those in need. and we know that times are tough. and these meals specifically go to seniors who are shut in and they're on fixed incomes. a lot of them are depending on on support and different services, and we're there to provide those services. >> you you say times are tough, tough for the salvation army, too. it was just earlier in the week where you had two car batteries stolen out of vans and trucks that you all drive. you had windows that were broken and shot out. you have your own

tough times you have to worry about. how do you and your volunteers kind of still keep the faith and be happy doing what you're doing this morning? >> well, this is christmas is the season of hope. we're celebrating the hope of the world today. and so if you can't have hope at christmas, when can you have it? and that's what we're doing. we're bringing hope to this community. and we know that people are going to come alongside us, help us with those little things. the batteries being stolen. it's we're making an impact on lives. that's the big difference. yeah. >> tell me, what does christmas mean to you? >> christmas for me, i'm a pastor, so i'm celebrating the birth of jesus christ. and i'm so thrilled to be able to be out here serving people, doing what he would do, serving the less fortunate, helping those in need. >> you mentioned before we came on the air that doing this drive through meal delivery, you guys really got a handle on how to make it efficient ever since covid. what are the things you've learned over the years that was maybe tough on the first year? >> well, we're relying on a lot of tech. we've actually reached out to a lot of different tech businesses and said, can you give us a hand with this? you know, we work with fedex and ups, help us figure out how to

do the routing. and i mean, this is tech capital of the world, right? so why not use what we have available. so we've got boots on the ground, great volunteers. but we also have businesses that are providing a lot of know how to make things better. >> we're about 25 minutes away from it all starting here. can you tell us what's going on behind the doors right now? how are volunteers prepping? what is happening before everything really starts to get chaotic? >> well, these folks just arrived. and there's a real method to the madness here with these 4300 meals that we're delivering today, they're split up into routes of 20 or 40 meals. and so they're getting ready to split up these boxes. they've got they've got two boxes for each, each car, one of perishables, one of non-perishables. and they're making sure everything matches the lists. and as people start coming in, it looks like we got a vehicle coming in right now. we're going to greet them, wish them a merry christmas. they'll pull on through. we'll we'll verify who they are and make sure that they're doing what they need to do. we're going to load them up and send them on their way. and they're going to go and deliver those meals to the folks in need.

oh. well. the group put on two performances last night at the great american music hall in san francisco. a packed house clapped along as they were serenaded with hymns and holiday favorites. this was the 35th year the choir has come together for christmas eve performances, and today is the first night of hanukkah, judaism's eight day festival of lights. hundreds of people are expected to attend this evening's ceremony to light the first candle of the giant menorah at san francisco's union square. this is the 49th year of the event. music will begin at 330, with the lighting at 5 p.m. legendary concert promoter bill graham built the menorah and headed up the tradition until his death in 1991. there have only been four times since 1900 that the first night of hanukkah and christmas day shared the same day. and if you need to get one last ingredient for your christmas meals today, or really a last minute gift to your list of stores, open today. and while

too bad. the temperatures are 38 degrees in santa rosa, 39 degrees in livermore and throughout the santa cruz mountains, also mid 30s. but what's notable about this, as you're driving highway 17 and some of those shaded spots, due to the redwood trees, we could have some black ice. very dangerous conditions. these temperatures are much colder than 24 hours ago due to the lack of the cloud cover. 13 degrees colder in santa rosa. sunrise at 723 this morning. and boy, is it glorious. after an inch of rain did accumulate across the bay area. winds are light. will remain light all christmas day. but one thing you will notice is increasing clouds and also increasing swells. right now, 11 to 14ft swells off the coast. no advisories in place right now, but beginning tomorrow morning at 10 a.m, all the way through sunday at 4 p.m, keep your visitors and yourself away from the coast. as these waves lap on shore, they could take you out to sea. another

having a rough time to the holidays. now, police are investigating break ins at three separate stores that happened right before christmas. surveillance video capturing each of the break ins. police are connecting two of the break ins to the same group early tuesday morning. one group broke into elias family restaurant in san leandro, stealing $3,000 food and alcohol. police believe that same group crashed their car into the gamestop at fashion fair place later that morning. officers arrested three suspects, but one got away. >> they knew what they were doing. they immediately went to the back and they used a handsaw to cut the lock off the doors. and then they grabbed whatever they could. all the a lot of ps5's nintendo switches. >> this gets under my skin. no one. no one likes this. you feel violated. someone comes in, they

break in your door. it's your house. basically. i grew up here in hayward. >> lego retailer brick by brick is undergoing repairs. after this, two different groups of thieves rammed their cars into the business on the same day. the losses totaled about $10,000 worth of damage and stolen merchandise. >> it just sucks. like, it just it makes me feel not less safe. and it's a place where i want people to come and feel safe, and a place where i want people to come and share their passion that they have. >> if convicted, the suspects could be looking at longer sentences due to prop 36 because they actually worked together to commit the crimes. all three businesses are looking at improving their security systems. a strain of bird flu has killed a large number of big cats that should have been living in a securedife on an animal sanctuary in washington state. in late november, there were 37 wild cats at the wild field advocacy center in washington. now there are only 17 left due to bird flu outbreaks. to stop the outbreak, the state department of agriculture is offering gloves,

masks and goggles for people who want to handle the animals. state vets say the wildcats possibly contracted the virus through infected meat. >> we usually go through most of all the meat and feed out 100 pounds per day. typically, we had to dump all that food out. 8,000 pounds. so we definitely need more funds to get our meat to stock up. >> according to the cdc, the bird flu virus is causing outbreaks in poultry, dairy cows and cats. even 65 confirmed reported cases among humans in the u.s. centuries, the bald eagle symbolized america. while president biden has now signed legislation designating the bald eagle the country's national bird, the bald eagle has appeared on the great seal since 1782, which is used on official documents of the united states. that same year, congress designated the eagle as the national emblem, but this new bill is the first time the bald eagle has been formally recognized as the national bird.

an update on that. all right. the chp maximum enforcement period. now in effect officers on the road are looking for signs of people driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving. drivers can also be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt. chp says last year, officers arrested more than 900 people for driving under the influence during the three day christmas weekend. the maximum enforcement period ends at midnight. the bay area's airports should not be as busy as the last couple of days. travel experts are predicting record breaking travel this holiday season, though. take a look at flights this morning so far, according to travel website flightaware, there are 15 delays and one cancellation right here at sfo. at the oakland airport, there are seven delays, no cancellations, and at san jose airport there are only two delays. no cancellations so far. so it's great news for travelers. a possible bird strike on a passenger plane led to a crash in the kazakhstan city of aktau. authorities say that jet crashed. today, at least 67 people on board the plane. rescuers say at least 30 people are dead and at least 28

others actually survived. looks like the plane broke in half here. some heavy damage. it was originally scheduled to travel to russia when a flock of birds reportedly hit the aircraft, causing this deadly crash. meantime, russia has attacked ukraine's energy grid. today, ukraine's president says explosions were reported across the country. officials say it's the 13th time russia has attacked ukraine's power grid. at least one person died, six others injured. this has left half a million houses without heating during low winter temperatures of below 40 degrees right now in the region. nasa astronauts are sending christmas greetings from space stranded astronauts suni williams and butch wilmore, along with nick hague and don pettit. pettit shared their holiday greeting with all of us back here on earth, you know, in christmas time, the holiday season, it's about spending time with friends and family and loved ones. >> you know this, this year we're going to be in orbit away

tons of these salvation army boxes. they're full of holiday meals. and what volunteers are doing here, they're taking meals, and they're usually about 20 to 40 per box. taking them, putting them in the trunks of cars. backseats of cars. and each one of these volunteers driving those meals to a number of different senior citizens throughout the city here, 4000 meals, more than 4000 meals will be delivered today, all thanks to more than 200 drivers here in the city. each of those meals going to senior citizens in san francisco who rely heavily on services and support of local programs like the salvation army. and ever since covid 19, the pandemic, the organizers of this event tell me that they've learned a lot on how to get it done right, and even recruited help from big businesses to make sure it's a smooth operation. >> we work with fedex and ups, help us figure out how to do the routing. and i mean, this is tech capital of the world, right? so why not use what we have available. so we've got boots on the ground, great volunteers. but we also have businesses that are providing a lot of know how to make things

everything is stayed about the same. i can always count on the food being delicious, and i go home like a little too full. >> actually a little too full. and in chinatown, one of san francisco's longest running annual comedy shows returned to bring laughs to people who don't traditionally celebrate christmas. the imperial palace restaurant hosted the 32nd kung pao kosher comedy dinner. the three day run features four comedians and a multi-course meal. >> it's amazing, and i've been doing this for 32 years, and i thought it was going to be a one off, and then it just got popular every i mean, from the first year it was popular and kept selling out, and i kept adding days and shows and it brings people together. it's community. >> proceeds from that event will benefit the chinatown ymca food pantry and shalom. but yet an organization dedicated to domestic violence prevention, san francisco based lyft is suing the city, accusing officials of overcharging the company. $100 million in taxes in the past five years, the

chronicle reports. the rideshare company says the city's tax calculations wrongly included driver compensation as part of its revenue. lyft says the city calculated taxes from 2019 to 2023 based on the total amount of money passengers paid for rides, which is not how the company says its business model works, the chronicle reports. the lawsuit comes as a broader, years long controversy around how gig economy companies like lyft and uber should be taxed due to their reliance on independent contractors instead of traditional employees. the spokesperson issued the statement saying, quote, lyft doesn't take operating in san francisco for granted, and we love serving both riders and drivers in our hometown city. but we believe the city is incorrect with how it calculated our gross receipts tax for the year 2019 to 2023. we filed this lawsuit to help correct this issue. while we continue to serve riders and drivers in san francisco, the company is now seeking refunds for the amount it says it's overpaid. the last

group of striking san francisco hotel workers is returning to the job. union members ratified a new four year contract, which includes an immediate $3 an hour pay raise with more raises throughout the life of the deal. it also added protections against understaffing, workload increases and health care insurance as well. a spokesperson for the hilton released a statement reading in part, quote, we believe this agreement is beneficial to both our team members and our hotels. we look forward to welcoming our team's member team members back to work and continuing to provide our guests with our signature hospitality. well, powerful waves along the santa cruz coastline led to the death of a man on the shore and the partial collapse of the santa cruz wharf. ktvu jesse gary shows us the cleanup efforts now underway and the challenges that are now ahead for the work on the dock by the bay in santa cruz tuesday is salvaging vessels tossed like toys from the water by a strong storm surge. >> i don't think the damage was

too bad. i think everything is mostly just scratches, you know, with the help of all the people from yesterday and all of sean's friends that came out and helped us, i think we dodged a bullet. >> those bullets are literally torpedo sized pieces of debris that are washing ashore. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> monday, a 150 foot section of the iconic santa cruz wharf sank into the pacific due to large swells. >> we are currently assessing and working towards understanding what structural integrity metrics need to be evaluated. as we work with our consultants and our contract engineering firms. >> debris from the wharf now floods surrounding waterways and has washed up onto some roadways. >> these pilings are really long. they're large, they're heavy. if we have another surge or, you know, storm system that comes through, the surge can actually carry those pilings. and if they hit a boat the wrong way, that boat can sink and go down. >> harbormaster blake anderson says over a dozen boats now sit

at the bottom, and 200 have sustained damage, so it's all hands on deck to clear debris and safeguard the roughly 900 remaining vessels. >> if we can get some of these pilings from the wharf that are that are floating around in the harbor out to prevent damage to other boats, we're we're prioritizing that right now. >> three men sent into the frigid water when the wharf collapsed have recovered from their minor injuries. their rescuers are said to be with family for the holiday. in an emailed statement, the santa cruz fire marine unit says two of its lifeguard lieutenants witnessed the wharf collapse from their patrol point, called it in and started to initiate rescue efforts. they removed the victims from harm's way and visually cleared the debris field. back at the harbor, boaters continue checking for damage. >> i won't know for sure until we pull it out of the water to make sure there isn't any damage under the hull. >> it's a race against time, as the next surge could send more obstacles their way and more boats to the bottom. >> we're resilient. humans are

now for massachusetts. flames bursting out on a front door. well, now two families do not have a home to sleep in tonight. this massive fire destroying everything inside one home, even turning the porch into tinder. another house was also badly damaged by fire on sunday. firefighters say they had to dodge exploding fireworks, even propane tanks too. amazingly, though, nobody was hurt. a deadly shooting in vallejo and police are busy trying to piece together how it happened. police were called to a shooting inside of a building near broadway and louisiana streets around one yesterday morning. once on the ground, they found a man who had been shot. officers say he died at the scene. the victim has not been identified, and it's unclear what led to the shooting. no arrests have been reported. the california highway patrol says officers arrested more than 100 people and recovered more than 700 stolen items in a statewide bust on friday. the goal to target organized retail theft. chp organized retail crime task

coming up shortly. andre. >> roberto. thanks. we'll check in with you then. in san francisco today, the salvation army holding its annual drive-thru christmas meal delivery event. ktvu. james torres is there now showing us how they're helping the community this morning. >> well, take a look at the operation behind me here. you see what looks like a garage warehouse type of setup. it's full of boxes. and those boxes are full of meals, about 20 to 40 package per box. volunteers are taking those boxes and putting them into the cars. and these drivers are all volunteers this morning, are taking out more than 4000 meals and delivering them to seniors all across the city of san francisco. those senior citizens who rely heavily on services and support of local programs. and since covid 19, the organizers of this event tell me that they've learned a lot on how to get this all done right. and they've even recruited help from big businesses to make sure it's a smooth operation. >> we worked with fedex and ups help us figure out how to do the routing. and i mean, this is tech capital of the world,

or two on this day. >> mr. maxwell, i'm talking to you because you're the expert on kind of how these operations go down. so what exactly is happening behind us here and what what's happening kind of throughout the building? >> well, the building is feeding the people, but we're the ones who are prepping the food for the people. so in this room here, the carving room, as you can see around here, we have stations with different people. this this section here is taking care of turkeys. the next section back there is taking care of hams. [music] so basically what we do is get a volunteer in, they get to a cutting station and they proceed to as cleanly and as as well as they can take, take the ham or the turkey apart. >> you've been part of this organization, a volunteer for about 20 years now. what about it makes you stay with it? >> you know, it's a lot of fun. that's the thing that makes it fun. we're serving your purpose, main thing, but it's also a lot of fun. the volunteers that come here are just a blast to work with. many of them are multi,

man on the shore, and the partial collapse of the santa cruz wharf. ktvu jesse gary shows us the cleanup efforts now underway and the challenges that are ahead for the work on the dock by the bay in santa cruz tuesday is salvaging vessels tossed like toys from the water by a strong storm surge. >> i don't think the damage was too bad. i think everything is mostly just scratches, you know, with the help of all the people from yesterday and all of sean's friends that came out and helped us, i think we dodged a bullet. >> those bullets are literally torpedo sized pieces of debris that are washing ashore. >> the whole front just fell off. there's somebody on it. >> monday, a 150 foot section of the iconic santa cruz wharf sank into the pacific due to large swells. >> we are currently assessing and working towards understanding what structural integrity metrics need to be evaluated. as we work with our consultants and our contract engineering firms.

>> debris from the wharf now floods surrounding waterways and has washed up onto some roadways. >> these pilings are really long. they're large, they're heavy. if we have another surge or, you know, storm system that comes through, the surge can actually carry those pilings. and if they hit a boat the wrong way, that boat can sink and go down. >> harbormaster blake, over a dozen boats now sit at the bottom, and 200 have sustained damage. so it's all hands on deck to clear debris and safeguard the roughly 900 remaining vessels. >> if we can get some of these pilings from the wharf that are that are floating around in the harbor out to prevent damage to other boats, we're we're prioritizing that right now. >> three men sent into the frigid water when the wharf collapsed have recovered from their minor injuries. their rescuers are said to be with family for the holiday. in an emailed statement, the santa cruz fire marine unit says two of its lifeguard lieutenants witnessed the wharf collapse from their patrol point, called it in and started to initiate rescue efforts. they removed the

over the world. >> union square officials say next year they're already planning on hosting at least 200 events, a new study reveals. one bay area city is among the top places in the u.s. to celebrate christmas. according to wallethub, san francisco is the sixth best city to be for the holiday, while wallethub also created a list of ten cities based on their holiday traditions, generosity, shopping, and affordability. the other top cities include atlanta, georgia at number one, followed by pittsburgh, pennsylvania. seattle, washington, las vegas, nevada. and orlando, florida. christmas trees are up to date, but not for long in san francisco. the city will announce tomorrow its christmas tree collection schedule. the event includes chipping trees for recycling. a 2025 recycling schedule goes out january 2nd to january 17th. collected trees will be taken to a recycling center, where they'll be grounded into mulch. a reminder you need to remo al tinsel, decorations and tree stands along with the lights
