fire started inside the home. the cause and origin are still under investigation by the oakland fire department. one neighbor, who doesn't want his face shown, says he heard the commotion and rushed to help. >> i heard screams, you know, people screaming saying the house is on fire. so i asked my neighbor, was he out of the home? and he said he was. but then i also heard someone else saying that someone was in there. >> oakland fire officials say weatherford alerted others, making sure his father, aunt and brother escaped. >> he started yelling to the family, there's a fire. there's a fire. i guess he was just trying to save everybody, make re everybody was out of the house. >> but relatives and officials say weatherford went back to search for the recently purchased engagement ring. he planned to give mayo new year's eve and never made it out. >> he was going to propose? yes. >> you knew he was going? >> i didn't know, they told me this morning. >> instead of elation, there is anguish. instead of a new phase

in life, it's the marking of the end of a life and of a man. many say embodied true love. >> i had given up on love until i met him. >> in oakland, i'm jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. >> a gofundme account has been established for the family. you can find it on our website ktvu.com. the red cross says it's helping this family with any immediate needs through the holiday. well, many people spent part of their christmas holiday helping those in need. the saint anthony foundation served over 1500 meals today in san francisco's tenderloin district. about 60 volunteers bused tables and served up hot meals, all with a smile. kitchen staff prepared more than 1,000 pounds of chicken, 900 pounds of potatoes and 1600 servings of bread and cookies. the, the chef behind today's service, explained why giving back to this event is such a personal experience. >> i dealt with addiction for a

very, very long time and i went into saint anthony's program, which is part of saint anthony's foundation. through them, i was able to go through the program, get a job here as a kitchen assistant, got promoted to a chef, and i get so much support here and so much love. it's awesome. >> saint anthony's has provided warm christmas day meals to the community for over 70 years. hundreds of people attended a christmas day mass this morning at san francisco's grace cathedral. it's located in the nob hill neighborhood and is one of the largest episcopalian churches in the united states. one alameda neighborhood brought lots of cheer to families tonight. christmas tree lane on thompson avenue goes all out with decorations during the holidays. in a tradition going back more than 85 years. dozens of houses take part in the festivities, decking out their

homes with seasonal lights and ornaments. one woman, who lives in the area says it's a tradition she never misses, in part because the houses change up their displays each year. >> just to see the community come out is so much fun, especially the kids, and to track on all the houses and they're so spectacular it's hard to keep moving on. that's why i walk. i don't drive, i have to just stop and stare. >> and if you want to see the dazzling displays in person, you still have time. christmas tree lane will continue to shine through new year's eve. well, today is not just christmas, but also the first night of hanukkah. 15 million jewish people around the world are celebrating this holiday, also known as the festival of lights. there's a ton. san francisco police are investigating a deadly and fiery crash near golden gate park. they say it happened just before 4:00 this afternoon in the area of park presidio and crossover drive. responding officers discovered a single vehicle involved in the collision that was engulfed in flames. one person was found dead inside. they have not been identified and no word yet on a cause of this crash. and authorities are also investigating after a vehicle crashed into the golden gate bridge toll plaza. this video from the citizen app. you can see the car wedged in the southbound lane there. this happened shortly before 2 p.m. the accident did slow traffic for drivers headed into the city. all lanes were back open by 230. officials reported minimum to no injuries. and happening now, the chp maximum enforcement period is still underway. we're looking live at 880 in oakland. there are extra officers on patrol looking for signs of people driving under the influence or otherwise

distracted. the heightened enforcement by chp will expire at midnight tonight, but will return next week for the new year's holiday. three people are displaced from their homes tonight in capitola village after an early morning fire damaged their apartment building. local residents say they heard an explosion around 6 a.m. just before a large fire broke out. now, the apartment complex on monterey avenue is mostly charred, and at least three people cannot return. one woman from the community says seeing the building burned, especially on christmas, is a sad sight. >> as a child, my friends lived there and we all spent our summers here on long way. this is where i learned to ride my bike. this is where we all grew up as children. so it's very it's very nostalgic to see. and it's sad. it's really sad. >> luckily, no injuries have been reported. the exact cause of the fire is still under

of people celebrated the christmas holiday by leaving their homes and heading to. the annual christmas in the park event, located in the heart of downtown san jose. that's where we find ktvu. lamonica peters joining us live from the plaza de cesar chavez, where the main event is being held. lamonica how's it looking there at this hour? >> betty. you know, there are still a lot of people out here, but christmas in the park is fun for the entire family. and the organizers say more and more people from all over are coming to san jose. three, three ice cold mist. mistletoe on christmas night in san jose. there's no better place to be

than at christmas in the park. >> it's been a tradition since i've been a kid. i've always been with my mom, my family, my dad, and now i'm bringing my wife. >> for over 40 years, the two acre park has transformed into a winter wonderland that people can walk through free of charge. bright lights, christmas trees, holiday displays, rides, food and even snow keep thousands of people from across the state coming back each year. >> and i'm born and raised in san jose, so we come back every holiday. and you know, i haven't been here since i was a kid. >> organizers say this year, christmas in the park is attracting more first time and out of town visitors. the nonprofit group also says donations continue to grow. one of the most popular attractions is sleigh ride portraits, where people can capture the christmas spirit and create memories. >> we've been doing it since like 2008, i believe. my mom likes to do it, so it's a tradition for us, but we've had additions to the family, so the

fire this week at the humane society in silicon valley, their staff was still determined to bring holiday cheer with some special christmas day puppy deliveries. volunteers vanessa and kathy made some special holiday magic happen today, wearing santa hats as they hand delivered a puppy to a family in san mateo. the mother tells us her three kids had no idea they'd be getting a puppy for christmas, and explained how they planned this surprise. >> okay, let's go check the mail. i think there's something else that's really big. like, we need your guys's help, and they're like, okay, so then they all just came down to see the new puppy. they didn't think it was a puppy. >> well, the children say they are still trying to pick a name for their new forever friend. >> well, great chance to get outside today. still lots of clouds, but in terms of the active weather pattern we have been tracking, it's nice to have a break, to enjoy, to just enjoy those new bikes or something like that, or get outside for a

hike or a walk for tomorrow. we are expecting this some showers first thing tomorrow morning. lots of cloud cover, and then we're going to bump up those rain chances, especially by thursday evening. across the bay area, temperatures will be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. and in terms of rain over the next couple of days, here's what this particular forecast model thinks. and as you can see here, we're showing you maybe a quarter of an inch to over over an inch up in the north bay for san rafael, an inch and a half, maybe close to that point up in santa rosa. so the rainfall will be back in the picture. right now, though, the clouds have been drifting into northern california. as you can see right now, some rain showers approaching the north coast of california, and that rain line will gradually move to the south over the next few hours overnight. but here's at least the widespread rain from eureka down toward garberville, approaching parts of mendocino county as well. outside right now, as you can see our live camera above san francisco, we have cooled off into the upper 40s and lower 50s. no frost advisories, but still somewhat of a chill in the air for tonight. and just a heads up, you know, a lot of people like

to head to the coast during these holiday weeks. we've been talking so much about the extreme surf and the high surf advisory that continues for thursday, friday and into saturday. so just a into sunday actually as well. so just be extra careful right near the immediate coastline over the next few days, that high surf continues to be a big threat out there. overnight temperatures will be in the 40s to right around 50 degrees, and we do bump up the shower activity. here's the forecast model. this is early tomorrow morning. this is 4 a.m. thursday and then 8:00 throughout the day. there's still a chance of some scattered showers, but you can see plenty of breaks in the action throughout the afternoon hours. but then look what wants to move in here by thursday late afternoon into the evening hours. another system. so it looks like this active weather stretch will continue for tomorrow and possibly into the weekend. we'll have more on that coming up with your full update in a few minutes. >> all right. thank you mark. well, the santa cruz wharf is closed indefinitely. two days after powerful waves sent a portion of the pier into the pacific ocean. debris from the collapsed wharf is still lying

a police investigation is now underway after a dead body was found in the wheel well of a plane at a hawaii airport. united airlines confirmed a body was found tuesday at maui's kahului airport. it was found after a flight arrived from chicago. united says the wheel well is only accessible from outside the plane, and it's unclear how or when the person accessed the wheel well. according to state officials, flight operations were not interrupted due to this discovery. well, an alaska airlines flight suffered a mechanical issue less than an hour after taking off from san jose mineta airport this morning. the airline tells ktvu the boeing aircraft departed for seattle at 10 a.m. 40 minutes later, there was a mechanical issue indicating indicated in the flight's flight in the plane's flight deck, rather. the

nonprofits and the countless volunteers who began their days early this morning. ktvu james torres shows us the efforts to make sure people are fed and cared for in san francisco. >> right at sunrise. 200 cars passed by the salvation army's warehouse in san francisco, loading up boxes of meals for delivery. more than 4000 meals went out into the city. >> these meals specifically go to seniors who are shut in and they're on fixed incomes. a lot of them are depending on on support and different services, and we're there to provide those services. >> the organization bouncing back after a recent robbery at its headquarters. but leaders say it did not affect their mission to make someone else's christmas. similar sentiment across town at glide memorial church. >> i spend my time here working with the volunteers to make sure the people out there who are less fortunate people out there with, with, in need, have a meal or two.

lajeunesse takes us to a recycling plant in southern california, where experts share some of the efforts they're doing to help reduce the waste. >> it goes back to education and enforcement. we have to get people to recycle and do a better job at it. >> some states are better than others. maine and vermont ranked near the top, but the national recycling rate is only 32%. >> americans consume a lot more material between thanksgiving and new years, as much as 25% more than average paper is recycled, the most followed by aluminum, glass and cardboard, but plastic the least. >> according to the epa, just 13% is recycled. the rest ends in a landfill. so this is part of recycling that you never see. all that stuff you put into the blue or the green bin. this is where it ends up for sorting. now consider we've been recycling for some 40 years. 70% still ends up in a landfill. that is not a record of success. >> there is a huge number of

a cab plowed into a group of pedestrians in new york city, injuring at least six people. it happened just after 4 p.m. local time at the famous herald square, outside the manhattan macy's on 34th street and sixth avenue. the victims include a nine year old boy whose leg was badly hurt. the driver is only being identified as a 58 year old man. an investigation is

ongoing. authorities in azerbaijan say 38 people were killed when a plane crashed in kazakhstan this morning. there were reportedly 67 people on board the azerbaijani airliner when it went down. the plane was en route from the azerbaijani capital of baku to the russian city of grozny, when it was diverted and attempted an emergency landing. the azerbaijani president said that it was too soon to speculate on the reasons behind the crash, but did say the weather had forced the plane to change from its planned course. after nearly three years of heavy battles and mass strikes, russia's full scale war against ukraine continues. fox's aishah hosni reports the latest attack came on christmas day. >> ukrainian soldiers on the front lines firing back christmas day, hitting the russian town of lgov in the kursk region. this after russia attacked ukraine's energy system with cruise and ballistic

san francisco city hall is shining bright in blue colors to mark the first night of hanukkah. meteorologist mark tamayo joins us with a look at the forecast. really was pretty pleasant all around the bay area today. >> yeah, kind of had that that cloudy sky thinking, okay, is it going to rain out there? and then thankfully we had that break. so a good chance to get outside today. but we do have some more rain clouds coming up in our forecast over the next several days. looks like an active weather pattern. no real major extreme storms, but still we will have some steady to heavy rain back in our forecast at times, especially up in the north bay. so here's a look at the forecast model. this is right on through friday night

into early saturday morning. and then we'll add to these numbers especially on sunday. so it looks like another system wants to come on board. that will be on sunday across the bay area also in the sierra of course a very popular destination for this for this time of year. and they do have a winter weather advisory. snow levels around 6500ft. and you can see that advisory is in place until 12 p.m. friday, and snowfall projections around 5 to 10in up in the mountains. so here's the satellite and you can pick out the circulation out here. so lots of clouds still streaming into northern california and some green showing up on the radar as well, primarily up to the north of the bay area. but here's some of the coverage right now. as you can see closer to eureka, right around cape mendocino, a little bit of action trying to move into parts of mendocino county. and we are expecting some more activity as we do head into the overnight hours into your thursday morning. current numbers. no frost advisories out there, but still a bit of a chill in santa rosa, 48 degrees. concord is 50 and san jose right now 53. now

here's the plan. tomorrow we'll have some scattered showers. first thing tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies. and then we'll bump up those rain chances, especially by thursday evening. so there is a chance we could have a somewhat of a dry window into your thursday afternoon. but we still have to keep that shower chance in the forecast. but overall it's an unsettled weather pattern thursday morning and then once again thursday night into friday morning and then once again on sunday. we could be tracking some steady rain, and those amounts could be ranging between about a half an inch in some of the inland valleys to possibly a four inches for the north bay coastal hills. so here's the next system out here in the pacific. this wants to come on board for tonight into tomorrow. and as you can see here, here's the overall weather pattern. it's an active flow here. so that will send more rain chances headed our way over the next few days. it's not a washout for, you know, the next five days, but still off and on. rain clouds pushing through the bay area. here's your thursday morning, 5 a.m, and then you'll notice there's a chance of a shower throughout the day. but this model scales back on the
