performing their hits with beyonce from her cowboy carter album the 11:00 news on ktvu. >> fox two starts now. >> hello again everyone, i'm betty yu. let's get you caught up on some of the top stories we're following tonight. san francisco police are investigating a deadly and fiery crash near golden gate park. they say it happened just before 4:00 this afternoon in the area of park presidio and crossover drive. responding officers discovered a single vehicle involved in this collision that was engulfed in flames. one person was found dead inside. no word tonight on the cause of this crash. an explosion triggered a large fire in the capitola village, leaving three people without a place to call home tonight. it happened about 6 a.m. thankfully, no one was hurt. the exact cause of this fire is still under investigation. [music] and hundreds gathered in san francisco to kick off the start of hanukkah, the eight day jewish festival of lights

commemorated the rededication of the second temple in jerusalem and is celebrated with nightly lighting of candles on the menorah. ktvu is joey horta was at tonight's ceremony and has the story from union square. >> hanukkah is officially underway, with an enthusiastic kickoff in san francisco's union square drawing in several hundred to witness the lighting of a three ton menorah. >> we stand up as we stand up with light. we stand up with positivity. instead of engaging in the darkness and the negativity, you know it. >> it celebrates again another triumph of the jews over people trying to really get rid of us. >> organizers call this the first large public menorah outside of israel. >> it's really cool. it's giant. >> it's cool. now celebrating its 49th year, the 22 foot tall display is known as the mammoth menorah. after inspiring 15,000

oversize menorahs around the world. >> this is all about breaking down the barriers of humanity and climbing into each other's heart. >> in a sign of unity, the celebration takes place under the union square christmas tree. but for the second year in a row, a shadow hangs over the glowing celebration. hostages still being held captive by hamas. >> we just want that war to be over. and we want peace, and we want to be able to just have positive energy as a community with the jewish people. >> persevere through dancing, games and traditional jewish food. >> i'm eating a chocolate sufganiyah. it's kind of a donut. >> what does this remind you of? >> my childhood. >> singing the songs and playing the dreidel. the top spin tops. it's really fun. >> the festival of lights will continue with another candle lit eight nights in a row.

>> bring that hanukkah light into into yourself, into your home. and spread that light outward. right. spread that light to you know, meet someone on the street and be a light for them. >> and because it's here in union square, we've seen lots of tourists stopping by to take pictures of the menorah. hanukkah celebrations will continue through january 2nd in san francisco. joey hornig ktvu, fox two news. >> well, many people spend part of their christmas holiday helping those in need. the saint anthony foundation served over 1500 meals today in san francisco's tenderloin district. about 60 volunteers bused tables and served up hot meals, all with a smile. kitchen staff prepared more than 1,000 pounds of chicken, 900 pounds of potatoes and 1600 servings of bread and cookies. the chef behind today's service explained why giving back to this event is such a personal experience. >> i dealt with addiction for a very, very long time and i went into saint anthony's program, which is part of saint anthony's

foundation. through them, i was able to go through the program, get a job here as a kitchen assistant, got promoted to a chef, and i get so much support here and so much love. it's awesome. >> saint anthony's has provided warm christmas day meals to the community for over 70 years. hundreds of people attended a christmas day mass this morning at san francisco's grace cathedral. it's located in the nob hill neighborhood and is one of the largest episcopalian churches in the united states. one alameda neighborhood brought lots of cheer to families tonight. christmas tree lane on thompson avenue goes all out with decorations during the holidays. in a tradition going back more than 85 years. dozens of houses take part in the festivities, decking out their homes with seasonal lights and ornaments. one woman, who lives in the area says it's a tradition she never misses, in part because the houses change

up their displays each year. >> to see the community come out is so much fun, especially the kids, and to track on all the houses and they're so spectacular it's hard to keep moving on. that's why i walk. i don't drive, i have to just stop and stare. >> and if you want to see the dazzling displays in person, you still have time for christmas. tree lane will continue to shine through new year's eve. one oakland family is in mourning this christmas after a deadly house fire. oaknd firefighters say it broke out shortly after 6:00 this morning on oak knoll boulevard inast oakland. no word y on a cause, but famy members tell ktvu jesse gary there are. they are simply in shock that their loved one is gone. >> family members say this burned out shell was the hallmark house for the holidays. now it's a painful reminder of the sacrifice of one man and how christmas will never be the

same. >> steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out of the house. >> broken by pain, grief and loss, mayo says she nicknamed her boyfriend steven weatherford gummy bear because he was such a sweet soul. >> he was the kind of guy that any parent would want for their daughter. >> creative and humorous, career driven, but also a published author on the side, weatherford returned to his family home to celebrate the holidays with those closest to him. >> because this is a yearly celebration, this is not one. and this is when i say yearly. i mean going on for 4050 years. this is not one of those things that it's every other year. >> the family spent christmas eve cooking and then around 615 christmas day, a fast moving fire started inside the home. the cause and origin are still under investigation by the oakland fire department. one neighbor, who doesn't want his face shown, says he heard the commotion and rushed to help. >> i heard screams, you know,

people screaming saying the house is on fire. so i asked my neighbor, was he out of the home? and he said he was. but then i also heard someone else saying that someone was in there. >> oakland fire officials say weatherford alerted others, making sure his father, aunt and brother escaped. >> he started yelling to the family, there's a fire, there's a fire! i guess he was just trying to save everybody, make sure everybody was out of the house. >> but relatives and officials say weatherford went back to search for the recently purchased engagement ring. he planned to give mayo new year's eve and never made it out. >> he was going to propose? yes. >> you knew he was going to. >> i didn't know, they told me this morning. >> instead of elation, there is anguish. instead of a new phase in life, it's the marking of the end of a life and of a man. many say embodied true love. >> i had given up on loving him. >> in oakland, i'm jesse gary,

ktvu, fox two news. >> new at 11. a man is in custody tonight after he tried swinging at police officers with a chain during a chase down. uth el camino roadround 445n tuday evening. officers tracked him down around the corn using an employees scription. that's when police say he grabbed a metal chain and ung at them before running off again. officers tased him and eventually arrested him for felony theft and resisting arrest. also new at 11, san jose police chief paul joseph posted this photo to x today. he says he and assistant chief brian shaw arrested this person in the photo. and for pulling this pistol out on a motorist during their midnight christmas eve shift. chief joseph says this happened in san jose's busiest patrol district. the gun has been recovered and the suspect is now in jail. well, coming up

the los angeles county department of public health has a warning about a brand of cat food that's tested positive for bird flu. this story begins tonight's west coast rap. health officials say one cat died after eating it in oregon. northwest natural naturals has voluntarily recalled the 2 pound packs of turkey recipe raw and frozen food. if you have these products with use by dates of may 20th 1st or june 23rd, 2026, officials urge you to throw it out immediately. deputies in denver say they've arrested a couple who allegedly abandoned their one month old baby boy in a road median. the adams county sheriff's office shared these images of the baby's car seat. they say they got a call about the infant around 930 this morning, and he was only wearing a diaper, but he was otherwise said to be okay. deputies initially said they were only seeking to reunite the baby with his family, but hours later, they announced that they arrested the child's biological

parents and they're seeking to charge them with felony child abuse. in this case. well, some soldiers in utah got to reunite with their family and friends just in time for the holidays. 130 soldiers returned from a long deployment to africa. one mother and father waited nearly a year to see their youngest daughter, who had been deployed since march. >> we got to talk to her over video while she was gone, and so every now and then, you know, we'd talk and stuff and share things and she sent me a video of, of a mom and a daughter seeing each other and hugging. and she's like, this is going to be us. and i'm like, i can't wait. >> well, the soldiers who are part of the utah national guard were set to arrive shortly after christmas, but they were able to return just in time for the holidays. well, you can hear about all of the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday

through friday, or find round the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. a christmas eve storm in the sierra kept caltrans busy, as crews work through the night to clear those sierra passes. reporter michelle bander explains their efforts went a long way in helping people get into the mountains to spend time with family. >> families hoping for a white christmas got their wish in the sierra. >> the only white we have in our christmas is at the beach, so to have a white snow christmas is pretty magical for us. >> the wongs are from australia and came to visit their sacramento uncle for christmas. >> it's not slippery at all. you know. the drive is very, very good. thanks to caltrans, caltrans didn't stop plowing until the snow stopped falling. >> you know, it came in hard and fast. actually, we had a lot of holiday traffic. of course, this is one of our busiest times of

christmas night in san jose. >> there's no better place to be than at christmas in the park. >> it's been a tradition since i've been a kid. i've always been with my mom, my family, my dad, and now i'm bringing my wife. >> for over 40 years, the two acre park has transformed into a winter wonderland that people can walk through free of charge. bright lights, christmas trees, holiday displays, rides, food and even snow keep thousands of people from across the state coming back each year. >> and i'm born and raised in san jose, so we come back every holiday. and you know, i haven't been here since i was a kid. >> organizers say this year, christmas in the park is attracting more first time and out of town visitors. the nonprofit group also says donations continue to grow. one of the most popular attractions is sleigh ride portraits, where people can capture the christmas spirit and create memories. >> we've been doing it since like 2008, i believe. my mom likes to do it, so it's a

tradition for us, but we've had additions to the family, so the picture keeps getting bigger and bigger. >> joseph williams says he's been carving signs at christmas in the park for the last ten years, and says people buy the customized signs as gifts. >> most of the time, it's the family name with a cute little design that represents the family, but sometimes it's the custom logo for their store at home, or even for the family bar in the backyard. >> now, if you haven't already been to christmas in the park, you have until january 1st. it starts at noon and ends at p. you can also drive through history park for light displays, but there is a fee for that event. if you want more information about christmas in the park, just go to ktvu.com and click the link for this story. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> and now let's go to meteorologist mark tamayo for one final look at the forecast. we had fake snow in san jose. but i think a lot of people are

thinking about headed up, heading up to tahoe or the mountains this weekend. >> a popular time of year to head to the mountains. and they do have a winter weather advisory that just started. so yeah, we have more rain and some more snow in the sierra forecast as we do head into approach the weekend for your thursday. some showers in the morning. in fact, the showers are coming on board right now up in parts of the north bay, mostly cloudy skies. i'm going to bump up those rain chances later in the day on thursday, especially thursday evening. highs tomorrow will be close to 60 degrees. and here's one of the forecast models that does bring in some rainfall. take this right on through friday. you can see the amounts ranging from about a half an inch to possibly close to an inch and a half up in parts of the north bay. and then there's another system on sunday that wants to bring in some more rain and some more sierra snowfall in the sierra. the winter weather advisory is in place right now. it starts at 10:00 tonight, and it's in place until 12 p.m. on friday. snowfall could be right around 5 to 10in, so if you are heading up, this could impact travel over the passes for both 80 and 50. once again, as an active pattern out here in the pacific. a little bit more

action on the radar right now. we do have some light rain moving into portions of the north bay santa rosa right now, reporting some light rain and some more coverage. as you can see, drifting in from the north. current numbers santa rosa 48 degrees. concord is checking in 50 and san jose lower 50s. of course, we've been talking a lot about the big surf out toward the immediate coastline, and we have another high surf advisory. so it's kind of just been relentless. and if you are heading to the coast, just be extra careful, be extra safe and watch the waves from a safe distance. high surf advisory. you can see the projected wave heights and that's in place right on through sunday. overnight temperatures will be in the 40s to right around 50 degrees. scattered showers, especially early tomorrow morning because this system is moving in from the north. and as we widen out the view in the pacific, it's an active weather pattern. so multiple rain clouds as we do, head toward the weekend. it's not steady rain every hour of the day, but we are tracking multiple days of rain chances. here we are tomorrow morning, 5 a.m. the chance of some scattered rain showers, maybe some breaks in

from certain cancers. researchers compiled data from 14 previous studies on more than 9500 cancer patients and nearly 16,000 healthy people. they found drinking more than four cups of coffee a day, or one cup of tea a day lowered the cancer risk in the head, neck, mouth and throat areas by anywhere from 9 to 30%. well, if you're documenting your holidays on tiktok, use it while you can. the social media app could be forced to shut down next month, but as doug luzader reports, tiktok is hoping for a last minute gift from the supreme court. >> rest assured, we aren't going anywhere. >> a big promise from the ceo of tiktok. it's one of the most popular social media apps in the
