into the 40s and 50s out the door, and these temperatures are actually more mild than 24 hours ago by up to 11 degrees. visibility hampered in santa rosa at three miles due to areas of fog and rain showers. in fact, we do have a little bit of light precipitation just now pushing out of santa rosa. rain around mill valley and well into the golden gate bridge area. we do have rain showers in the east bay as well, and across the santa clara valley. these rain showers spotty this morning. breezy winds up to 13 in oakland. we do have the winds currently at nine miles per hour in mountain view and this area of low pressure. we're going to track it together and tell you just how much rain to expect and how long the rain is going to stick around. and gang, this is still to come. >> thank you roberta. enjoying the morning off? but of course we're staying on top of the morning commute if there is much of one to speak of. boy, this story really hasn't changed over the past few days. some drops there on the camera lens as we look live at the bay bridge toll plaza. the streets are a little

slick, but not too much in the way of congestion. we'll swing up north, take a peek at the golden gate once again. we see a lot of wet on the roadway and the camera lens. not too much in the way of traffic congestion, though. going between san francisco and marin counties. >> and back now to this story. a family in oakland is in grief after a deadly house fire on christmas morning. ktvu jesse gary tells us the family are simply in shock. their loved one is gone. >> family members say this burned out shell was the hallmark house for the holidays. now it's a painful reminder of the sacrifice of one man and how christmas will never be the same. >> steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out the house, broken by pain, grief and loss. >> ashanti mayo says she nicknamed her boyfriend steven weatherford gummy bear because he was such a sweet soul. >> he was the kind of guy that

any parent would want for their daughter. >> creative and humorous, career driven, but also a published author on the side, weatherford returned to his family home to celebrate the holidays with those closest to him. >> because this is a yearly celebration, this is not one, and this is when i say yearly. i mean going on for 4050 years. this is not one of those things that it's every other year. >> the family spent christmas eve cooking, and then around 615 christmas day, a fast moving fire started inside the home. the cause and origin are still under investigation by the oakland fire department. one neighbor, who doesn't want his face shown, says he heard the commotion and rushed to help. >> i heard screams, you know, people screaming saying the house is on fire. so i asked my neighbor, was he out of the home? and he said he was. but then i also heard someone else saying that someone was in there. >> oakland fire officials say weatherford alerted others, making sure his father, aunt and brother escaped.

>> he started yelling to the family, there's a fire, there's a fire! i guess he was just trying to save everybody, make sure everybody was out of the house. >> but relatives and officials say weatherford went back to search for the recently purchased engagement ring. he planned to give mayo new year's eve and never made it out. >> he was going to propose, yet you knew he was going to. i didn't know her. they told me this morning. >> instead of elation, there is anguish instead of a new phase in life. it's the marking of the end of a life and of a man many say embodied true love. >> i had given up on love until i met him in oakland. >> i'm jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. >> three people are without a home this morning after a fire damaged their apartment building in capitola. people who live in the area say they heard an explosion around six on christmas morning, just before a large fire broke out. there is a lot of damage to that complex on monterey avenue, and at least three families cannot return.

one woman from the community says seeing the building burned, especially on christmas, was a sad sight. >> well, as a child, my friends lived there and we all spent our summers here on long way. this is where i learned to ride my bike. this is where we all grew up as children. so it's very it's very nostalgic to see. and it's sad. it's really sad. >> no injuries have been reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> all right. coming up on now. 505 right now, taking a live look at the road conditions on interstate 80 heading toward the sierra. this is near donner summit. you could see that blanket of snow on the ground there. most of the sierra enjoyed a white christmas thanks to a storm that passed through the mountains, leaving snow on the ground. certainly good for skiing weather right now. it's kept caltrans busy as crews work through the night to clear those sierra passes. their efforts went a long way in helping people get into the mountains to spend time with family. >> it's crucial. this is this is

what we're here for. we take pride in highway 50 and keeping it open and safe for the traveling public. >> skiers were treated to a perfect powder day on christmas. that's great news for businesses in the area, like donner ski ranch. some of your sierra resorts don't get enough snow. but this year, donna ski ranch donner ski ranch says it's opening every trail thanks to the recent snowfall. >> really a mellow place to ski. it's really accessible and a great place for kids to learn. >> and donner actually honestly gets some of the, i think some of the best snow snowmaking machines were added at its resort, but so far the owners say they haven't had to use them this year. >> all right, let's see what's happening up in the mountain and elsewhere by checking in with our meteorologist, roberta gonzalez. >> in the past 24 hours, anywhere between 6 and 9in of snow has fallen around the greater lake tahoe area. it was palisades that was at the top of the pack at nine full inches.

right now it's below freezing in blue canyon. we do have mixed precipitation around the greater lake tahoe area and truckee's at 34 degrees with a few snowflakes on the fly this morning. so here's what you can expect today through saturday, snow today, and additional up to three inches down to about 6500ft. it will be breezy to downright windy as well through your friday and periods of rain as that temperature climbs into the mid 40s on saturday. here's the deal. okay, we do have a winter weather advisory in place all the way until friday at high noon, an additional 5 to 10in of snow and expected live weather camera. we're looking out towards oakland. layers of clouds this morning. temperatures are in the 40s and 50s in oakland through alameda into piedmont. it's currently 48 degrees. it's 53 across the santa clara valley, and these temperatures are up to 12 degrees more mild than 24 hours ago, not as cold due to the increasing cloud deck. we do have some fog in the north bay at this hour. five mile

visibility at the sea shore. rain showers right now, pretty spotty across the north bay. and then we see that we do have some light precipitation right around the bolinas area, east bay. you're filling in with plenty of light rain showers from hayward through san ramon and fremont. i saw a pretty aggressive cell push over the vasco road area up to the altamont pass that has now moved in an easterly direction, and plenty of rain showers right now around the santa cruz mountains, san jose, sunnyvale and also into redwood shores. this is a big, beautiful area of low pressure. you can see the core right there. that's where the heaviest precip is. we will have the scattered showers this morning. very light. then a big break during the day before more rain showers move in this afternoon into the evening hours as we track it. here's high noon. you can see that we're dry, albeit cloudy with few sunny breaks. here comes the bulk of the activity, beginning about 4 or 5:00 in the north bay. everybody has plenty of rain showers at 10:00. i wanted to stop it at 2:00 tomorrow morning. this is moderate to

your step. they say on wet stairways when you're descending or coming out of the platform areas there. and also reduce ferry service. if you're taking the ferry service this morning or planning on it. they're operating at a reduced schedule right now because of the christmas holidays and so forth. here's a live look now at the richmond-san rafael bridge, and you can see not much traffic there and a lot of rain on the lens. we'll keep an eye on the roads for you this morning. all right. here are some of the top stories we're following for you. the bay area coastline expected to get battered by big waves over the next couple of days. the national weather service issuing a high surf advisory spanning from the north bay down to big sur. it goes into effect at 10:00 this morning and will remain until 4:00 sunday afternoon. parts of the coast may see waves as tall as 30ft. the u.s. food and drug administration is recalling some eyedrops over concern they could cause eye infections. the brand is calling some of. it's recalling some of its ultra eye drops. the fda says it received complaints regarding a possible fungal contamination in a sealed vial. they're sold nationwide.

so far, there have been no reports of customers having bad reactions from contaminated vials. phoenix, arizona sky harbor airport temporarily shut down overnight after reports of gunfire inside one of the terminals. police say a physical altercation led to someone pulling out a gun at a restaurant at the tsa outside the tsa checkpoint. three people were shot and one was stabbed. all four taken to the hospital, where one is in critical condition. one woman was arrested. police say everyone involved knew each other prior to the incident. operations at the airport have returned to normal now. >> a police investigation is underway after a body was found in the wheel well of a plane at an airport in hawaii. united airlines confirmed a body was found tuesday after a flight from chicago landed at maui's airport. united says the wheel well is only accessible from outside the plane. it's unclear how or when the person got inside. according to state officials, flight operations were not interrupted by the discovery. here at home and happening today, the city of san francisco is announcing its

christmas tree collection schedule. the event includes chipping trees for recycling. the 2025 recycling schedule goes from january 2nd to january 17th. collected trees will be taken to a recycling center, where they'll be ground into mulch. a reminder here to remove all tinsel, decorations, tree stands and lights. >> well, today is the first day of kwanzaa, the annual celebration of african american culture. the celebration lasts seven days until january 1st. each day is dedicated to a principle, and today's principle is umoja, which is a swahili word for unity. tonight, san francisco city hall will light up in red, green and black. black representing the people. red for the struggle and green for the future. and hope that comes from their struggle. city leaders in hayward are hosting their own celebration at city hall on sunday. >> tonight marks the second night of hanukkah. 15 million jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday, also known as the festival of lights. ktvu joey hortis shows us how people in san francisco are

morning. we're currently at 48 degrees, also 40s and 50s coming across the northern portion of our bay area. it is now 54 and half moon bay. and good morning to all of you in the santa clara valley, where currently the temperatures are in the 50s, we have temperatures up to at this hour, 12 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. we do have visibility hampered in throughout santa rosa and in napa. no problems in livermore this morning, but we will see some patchy fog today. now, live doppler radar does suggest that this particular time we have light rain skirting across santa rosa. also across the santa cruz mountains, as we zero in a bit of a break across the north bay, it's the east bay. the recipient of most of the precipitation at this momen. from fremont on 680 south, all the way into milpitas and in fremont, light rain showers. you do need your windshield wipers. also, around the rose garden district of san jose, backing through sunnyvale into cupertino and campbell, and more rain showers this morning in scotts valley, backing through santa

cruz and ben lomond as well, where we have been the recipient of over an inch of rain in the past 24 to 48 hours. this is our storm tracker and we have the core of the center of the area, low pressure, producing the heaviest precip right now. seattle into portland. nikki, that northwestern quadrant of eureka. look how far out this trail is back. that's why we have the warmer air mass this morning. and this is going to be showery activity hit and miss this morning. a bit of a break today. noon until about 4 or 5:00 in the afternoon. light rain begins in earnest across the northern half of the bay area into mendocino county. ukiah is getting nailed at 10:00 tonight with moderate to heavy rain showers all the way along the mendocino coastline. then overnight tonight, you'll hear those heavier raindrops on your rooftops about 2:00 in the morning. that's the line passing through. and then instability during the morning commute tomorrow morning. and then we buy a bit of a break. but between friday through sunday.

for providing us this live weather camera. official set up is at 723. so it's mighty dark outside. and also we have layers of clouds out there. those clouds are squeezing out some raindrops with our temperatures in the 40s and 50s. it's currently 49 degrees in hayward. backing through castro valley, it is 53 degrees in sunnyvale. winds are light to the north. we have picked up some breezy winds around the central bay, but right now, under ten. except for mineta. winds will blow today out of the south up to 15mph. dangerous surf today through sunday. we do have a high surf advisory in place. we will have the swells up to 22ft. stay away from the coast side. do not climb on any jetties. these waves are crashing on shore. radar indicates if you're commuting in or out of 680 north or south, primarily from fremont all the way to san jose. definitely slippery when wet. we will have a spotty shower this morning. the bulk of the

activity after 5:00, especially overnight tonight with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. full forecast featuring that five day outlook. andre. just minutes away. >> roberta. thank you. taking a live look now at how traffic is doing this morning on our freeways. you're looking at interstate 880 in oakland. and you can see traffic is flowing normally at this hour. much more traffic than of course we saw on christmas day. and the roads are wet because you can see the reflection of the headlights coming off of the pavement. here's another live look now, this one at the macarthur maze. similar situation here. it is still only. 533 in the morning, so traffic is a little lighter, but could pick up a little later on. we'll keep an eye on it for you. all right. now to this. san francisco police are investigating a deadly and fiery crash near the golden gate park. video from the citizen app. now, they say it happened just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon in the area of park presidio and crossover drive. responding officers discovered a single vehicle involved in that collision that was engulfed in flames. one person found dead inside. they have not been

identified, and there is no word yet on a cause of the crash. >> authorities are also investigating after a vehicle crashed into the golden gate bridge toll plaza. video here from citizen app. we are about to see a car just wedged right there in the toll lanes in the southbound lane. this happened just before 2 p.m. yesterday. this accident slowed traffic for drivers heading into the city. all lanes, though, were back open by 230. officials reported minimum to no injuries. san jose's police chief, paul joseph, worked the midnight christmas eve shift with assistant chief brian schaub, and the two arrested the person seen in this photo for pulling a pistol on a motorist during their shift. chief joseph said this happened in san jose's busiest patrol district. the gun has been recovered. that person is now in jail. >> well, not just the holiday season, but year round. bay area charities are helping the underserved within their communities. the salvation army assists 30 million americans each year. nationwide, the san francisco division delivered christmas meals to more than 4000 homebound seniors and

disabled adults. organization leaders say a recent robbery at its headquarters is not stopping its mission to provide care to those in need. >> these meals specifically go to seniors who are shut in and they're on fixed incomes. a lot of them are depending on on support and different services, and we're there to provide those services. >> well, across the city at glide memorial church, volunteers prepared, cooked and served more than 200 turkeys and hams to people, many of whom live on the streets in the tenderloin district. >> it's been my time here, working with the volunteers to make sure the people out there who are less fortunate people out there with in need, have a meal or two. it's a great opportunity. >> it's a joyful time. it's very rewarding to both give and receive. >> saint anthony foundation served thousands of pounds of chicken and potatoes as part of its holiday feast in the tenderloin. this organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year. >> the santa cruz wharf is closed indefinitely, a few days

slick roadways. headlights on, of course. it's pitch black out there right now, but that should be the case any time your windshield wipers are going. some of the stories we're following this morning. phoenix, arizona sky harbor airport temporarily shut down overnight after reports of gunfire inside one of the terminals. police say a physical altercation led to someone pulling out a gun at a restaurant outside the tsa checkpoint. three people were shot. one was stabbed. all four were taken to the hospital. one is in critical condition. one woman was arrested. police say everyone involved knew each other prior to the incident. operations at the airport have returned to normal. a family in oakland is grieving after a deadly house fire on christmas morning. steven weatherford was the first to detect the fire and alerted everyone in the home on oak knoll boulevard, near the zoo to get out. the fire department says he made sure that his father, aunt and brother escaped, then went back into the burning home hoping to retrieve an engagement ring he was going to give his girlfriend on new year's eve. the cause of the fire is under investigation.

the next peak, which is, of course, the golden gate bridge. it's not a problem going from san francisco to marin counties, but the story of slick roads remains the same here as well. let's go south by about two hours. here. up? no, not quite that far. we of course, we would drive on 880 south through oakland to get to santa cruz, which is where we're headed. but first, a quick peek at traffic in the heart of oakland. not a problem. 880 north and southbound flowing freely. now to santa cruz, where the wharf is closed indefinitely. a few days after powerful waves sent a portion of the pier into the pacific ocean. debris from the collapsed wharf is still in the surrounding water. some has washed up on nearby beaches and roads. city officials say. the three men who fell into the water when the wharf collapsed have recovered from minor injuries. officials also say they're still working with consultants and engineering firms to evaluate their next steps. >> three people are without a home this morning after a fire damaged their apartment building in capitola. residents say they heard an explosion around six christmas morning just before a large fire broke out. the apartment complex on monterey avenue is mostly charred, and at least three families cannot

snow on the ground. there is more snow expected up there today, so you're going to want to be careful if you're heading to the mountain today. do a little skiing up in that area. all right. let's take a look now at closer to home here it's caltrans busy as crews work through the night to clear those sierra passes. their efforts went a long way in helping people get into the mountains to spend time with family. >> it's crucial. this is. this is what we're here for. we take pride in highway 50 and keeping it open and safe for the traveling public. >> skiers in the sierra were treated to a perfect powder day on christmas. that's great news for businesses in the area, like donner ski ranch. some years, sierra resorts don't get enough snow, as we've reported in the past. but this year, donner ski ranch says it is opening every trail thanks to the recent snowfall. >> really a mellow place to ski. it's really accessible. a great place for kids to learn. >> and donner actually honestly gets some of the, i think, some of the best snow.

chicago landed in maui. united says the wheel well is only accessible from the outside of the plane, and it's unclear how or when the person accessed the wheel well. according to the state official, flight operations were not interrupted due to the discovery. >> the taxi cab plowed into a group of pedestrians in new york city, injuring at least six people. this happened just after four in the afternoon at the famous herald square outside the manhattan macy's there at 34th street. the victims include a nine year old boy whose leg was badly hurt. the driver has only been identified as a 58 year old man. the investigation is ongoing. >> well the netflix. the nfl made its netflix debut, and there were some major minor hiccups there, but overall, the streaming giant did not suffer the same issues it did during the infamous jake paul mike tyson fight. the early matchups saw the steelers hosting the chiefs. this one was all kansas city, who relied on a big game from their star quarterback and tight end patrick mahomes and travis kelce. then the two celebrated in the locker room in crisp style, and they were also joined by santa claus, who was

packs of turkey recipe raw and frozen food. if you have the product with the use by date of may 20th 1st or june 23rd of 2026. officials urge to urge that you throw it out immediately. cases of whooping cough have been surging in the u.s. for months, and there's no sign of a slowdown. more than 32,000 cases have been reported so far this year, according to the centers for disease control. that's six times higher than what was reported last year, the highest number since 2014. whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that starts as a runny nose, fever and cough then later develops into a painful full body cough after a week or two. the saint anthony foundation says it served more than 1500 meals on christmas in san francisco's tenderloin. some 60 volunteers bused tables and served up the hot meals. kitchen staff prepared more than 1,000 pounds of chicken, 900 pounds of potatoes, 1600 servings of bread and cookies. the chef behind the service explained why giving back to this event is such a

>> okay, roberta, thank you. for those who are working or heading out to see family and friends. we'll take a peek at what is happening over at the richmond-san rafael bridge. it's a story that's very similar all across the bay. you have wet roadways, drivers going with their headlights on. of course, it's still dark out there, but that should still be the case if your windshield wipers are going. and that's a 24 over seven rule. not much in the way of traffic congestion, however. going there from richmond to san rafael. we'll swing over to interstate 280 and give you a peek at what's happening there in the south bay. it's a little fuzzy here, thanks to maybe a little bit of moisture on the camera lens, but again, somewhat slick streets. not a ton of standing water, but just do keep in mind that we're sort of in this rain again, off and on again pattern. and that should help, you know, get you out the door just a little bit earlier rather than later. let's bring things back to the heart of the bay area. take a peek at the macarthur maze and we see no problem here. smooth sailing. thankfully, traffic congestion not an issue. >> 632. san francisco police investigating a deadly and fiery crash near golden gate park. they say it happened just before

4:00 yesterday afternoon in the area of park presidio and crossover drive. responding officers found a single vehicle involved in the collision engulfed in flames. a person was found dead inside. they have not been identified, and there is no word yet on a cause of the crash. >> authorities are also investigating after a vehicle crashed into the golden gate bridge toll plaza. we have video from citizen app that basically tells the whole story here. one car wedged there right between the toll plaza pillars in the southbound lane. this happened just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon. things did slow down for drivers who were heading into the city. all lanes, though, were back open by 230 ish. officials reported really? no minor injuries at all. >> and a man is in custody this morning after he tried swinging at police officers with a chain during a chase down. police say the man is accused of stealing from the safeway on south el camino road in san mateo around 445 tuesday evening. officers tracked him down using an employee's description, and that is when police say he grabbed a metal chain and swung it at them before running off again.

wharf is now closed indefinitely. we've reported a part of the wharf broke off during storms earlier this week after large waves crashed into it. ktvu james torres is there to show us how it looks now. good morning to you, james. >> andre, good morning to you. if you pull up to the wharf this morning, you'll see nothing but caution tape all over the place, making it very clear to you that you cannot be here. you cannot walk or drive anywhere near the wharf. and now city officials are trying to work on buying some time to figure out what it is they need to do next to make sure this opens safely. debris from the broken wharf still in the ocean below. and so the beach access around here is pretty limited. the main beach here is closed until further notice. city leaders say engineers, consultants. they will work on checking out the wharf to see what they need to do to make sure it gets back open to the public safely and quickly. >> safety and priority of asset protection is guiding those goals. when we start to talk about future plans for the wharf, and what decisions will

42. the santa cruz wharf is closed indefinitely. a few days after powerful waves and a portion of the pier into the pacific ocean, debris from the collapsed wharf is still in the surrounding water. some has washed up on nearby beaches and roads. city leaders say the three men who fell into the water when the wharf collapsed have recovered from minor injuries. officials also say they're still working with consultants and engineering firms to evaluate their next steps. >> a man was reportedly able to save his family from a burning home, which sadly took his life. steven weatherford was the first to detect the fire. he alerted everyone inside the house on oak knoll boulevard in oakland. the fire department says he made

charity is helping the underserved within their communities. the salvation army assists 30 million americans each year. nationwide, the san francisco division delivered christmas meals to more than 4000 homebound seniors and disabled adults. organization leaders say a recent robbery at its headquarters is not stopping its mission to provide care to those in need. >> these meals specifically go to seniors who are shut in and they're on fixed incomes. a lot of them are depending on on support and different services, and we're there to provide those services.

>> well, across the city, a glide memorial church volunteers prepared, cooked and served more than 200 turkeys and hams to people, many of whom live on the streets in the tenderloin district. >> i spend my time here working with the volunteers to make sure the people out there who are less fortunate people out there with in need, have a meal or two. >> it's a great opportunity. it's a joyful time. it's very rewarding to both give and receive. >> saint anthony's foundation served thousands of pounds of chicken and potatoes as part of its holiday feast in the tenderloin. this organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year. christmas may be over, but one east bay neighborhood is planning to keep the holiday lights on a little while longer. christmas tree lane on thompson avenue in alameda goes all out with decorations during the holidays. it's a tradition going back more than 85 years. dozens of houses take part in the festivities, decking out their homes with seasonal lights and ornaments. one woman, who lives in the area

says it's a tradition she never misses. >> to see the community come out is so much fun, especially the kids, and to track on all the houses and they're so spectacular it's hard to keep moving on. that's why i walk. i don't drive, i have to just stop and stare. >> if you want to see the dazzling displays in person, you still have time. christmas tree lane will continue to shine through new year's eve. well, thousands of people celebrated christmas holiday at the annual christmas in the park event. located in the heart of downtown san jose. for the last four decades, the two acre park has transformed into a winter wonderland. people can walk through for free. it features bright lights, beautifully decorated christmas trees, rides, food and more. each year, thousands of people across california make the drive to san jose to take in the sights. >> and i'm born and raised in san jose, so we come back every holiday. and you know, i haven't been here since i was a kid. >> we've been doing it since

like 2008, i believe. my mom likes to do it, so it's a tradition for us. but we've had additions to the family, so the picture keeps getting bigger and bigger. >> organizers say this year the event is attracting more first time out of town visitors. christmas in the park in san jose is open until january 1st. it starts at noon and ends at 10 p.m. every day. but hours may change for new year's eve and new year's day. the oakland roots and soul soccer club is honoring the late baseball legend rickey henderson. both clubs posted a tribute to henderson on social media and revealed they are retiring the number 24 in his honor. that number had previously been reserved for players born and raised in oakland. in honor of both rickey henderson and roots co-owner marshawn lynch. christmas day would have been henderson's 66th birthy. the baseball legend died last friday after battling pneumonia. >> he started yelling to the family, there's a fire. there's a fire. i guess he was just trying to save everybody. make sure everybody was out of the
