actually, both directions looking good. again, congestion not a problem. streets are still slick. we're beginning to see the sun come up. and of course, driving gets a lot easier when it's not dark outside, so we'll see some improvement. also here at the bay bridge toll plaza. a little bit of wet on the camera lens, but not a problem going through from oakland to san francisco right now. >> this story coming up at 702. a family in oakland grieving after a deadly house fire on christmas morning. steven weatherford was the first to realize something was burning and told everyone in the house on oak knoll boulevard, just west of 580, near the zoo. the fire department says he made sure his father, aunt and brother escaped. then he went back into the burning home, hoping to retrieve an engagement ring he was hoping to give his girlfriend on new year's eve. >> he was going to propose. yes, he was going. i didn't know, they told me this morning. steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out of the house. >> weatherford's girlfriend says his nickname was gummy bear because of his sweet soul. the

cause of the investigation is underway. >> three people are without a home this morning after a fire damaged their apartment building in capitola. people who live nearby say they heard an explosion around six on christmas morning, just before a large fire broke out. the apartment complex on monterey avenue has a lot of fire damage. at least three families cannot return. one woman from the community says seeing that building burned, especially on christmas day, was a sad sight. >> well, as a child, my friends lived there and we all spent our summers here on long way. this is where i learned to ride my bike. this is where we all grew up as children. so it's very it's very nostalgic to see. and it's sad. it's really sad. >> no injuries have been reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> the national weather service is warning swimmers, surfers and boaters about coastal waters this weekend. live picture from pacifica this morning. you can see waves splashing on the shore. the region is under a high surf advisory from 10:00

this morning to late sunday afternoon. large waves can sweep across beaches without warning and pull people into the ocean, and waves could reach 20 to 30ft, so be warned. city leaders in santa cruz say there is no timeline to reopen the city's wharf, after strong waves ripped it into two early this week. the section at the end of the wharf that collapsed has been closed for construction since earlier this year after being damaged in storms last year. while the city says it's still too soon to know what they will do to fix the wharf or make changes in the future. and with more high surf expected today, as we mentioned, the focus right now is making sure people do not get hurt from another round of strong waves or floating debris. >> safety and priority of asset protection is guiding those goals. when we start to talk about future plans for the wharf and what decisions will be made, we'll really be utilizing that data and also our engineering reports to have informed decisions as we meet with our local and regional partners.

obviously, lots of community outreach and lots of process to develop those answers. >> i think we have somewhat of a question mark as we move through time, whether it's the wharf, west cliff, and i don't think we're by ourselves. i think this is what coastal communities around the world are probably dealing with in that manifestation of climate change. >> the bathroom that collapsed off the wharf and into the ocean has become somewhat of a tourist attraction. it's now resting along a shoreline near the mouth of the san lorenzo river. >> time now is 705. the second night of hanukkah is tonight. last night, for the first time in nearly 20 years, people celebrated both hanukkah and christmas on the same day. the town. >> all right, let's get ready to light 15 million jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday. >> the last time it aligned with christmas was back in 2005. as ktvu joey hoard reports,

hundreds came together in san francisco to cheer the lighting of a large menorah. [applause] >> hanukkah is officially underway, with an enthusiastic kickoff in san francisco's union square drawing in several hundred to witness the lighting of a three ton menorah. >> we stand up as we stand up with light. we stand up with positivity. instead of engaging in the darkness and the negativity, you know it. >> it celebrates again another triumph of the jews over people trying to really get rid of us. >> organizers call this the first large public menorah outside of israel. >> it's really cool. it's giant. >> it's cool. now celebrating its 49th year, the 22 foot tall display is known as the mammoth menorah. after inspiring 15,000 oversize menorahs around the world. >> this is all about breaking down the barriers of humanity

union square, we've seen lots of tourists stopping by to take pictures of the menorah. hanukkah celebrations will continue through january 2nd in san francisco. josé horta ktvu fox two news. >> nonprofits usually can find volunteers on thanksgiving and christmas, but it's much more difficult in other times of the year. san francisco marin food bank is looking for volunteers to help during this week after christmas. the organization always sees a dramatic drop in assistance. during this time, the food bank offers programs to those in need, including weekly groceries, emergency food distribution, supplemental food for seniors, as well as home deliveries. while many stores were closed yesterday for the holiday, they were still a couple of businesses, services and restaurants that were open with people working on christmas. this includes hospitals and gas stations, as well as uber and lyft drivers. some people we talked to said they really didn't mind working the holiday just so they took the day off. >> so to work today, people are generally nice. >> gracious. some people don't celebrate christmas, they celebrate other holidays and they're just as festive. >> to me. this is how a holiday is. there are over 25 people behind the counter. everyone is

with the stories we're following for you this morning. there's a winter weather advisory in the lake tahoe area because of snowy conditions. and that means chain controls. most of the sierra enjoyed a white christmas thanks to a storm that passed through the mountains. caltrans has been busy clearing the passes and clearing crashes on highways. phoenix arizona's sky harbor airport temporarily shutting down overnight after reports of gunfire inside one of the terminals. police say a physical

altercation led to someone pulling out a gun at a restaurant outside the tsa checkpoint. three people were shot, one was stabbed, all four taken to the hospital, where one is in critical condition. one woman was also arrested. operations at the airport have returned to normal now. some major retailers are changing their strategies in the year to adapt to new consumer and shopping habits. macy's, walmart, starbucks, walgreens and dollar tree are among the brands shutting down stores. next year. 500 walgreens locations will shut down, while macy's will have 65 locations closed by the end of this year. businesses are attributing the shutdowns to changing industries, high operating costs and financial performance expectations. >> it was a big year for the entertainment industry, including a history making tour for the swifties. double the awards in hollywood and a whole lot of celebrity news. >> fox's ashley dvorkin takes us through the year of 2024. in entertainment. >> and those eyes on the right hollywood dished out double the awards in 2020 for a revamped

nominations this season, with 11 total for cowboy carter. i had some help. post malone released his first country album, f 1 trillion. the country debut was certified platinum by the recording industry association of america. his single i had some help, featuring morgan wallen, was certified five times platinum by the riaa, and his collaboration with blake shelton, pour me a drink, was certified platinum. in court cases, sean diddy combs remains behind bars since his arrest in september. he faces felony charges of racketeering, conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. the disgraced music mogul was denied bail three times since his arrest. combs pleaded not guilty. his trial date is set for may 5th. one lawsuit, previously filed by an anonymous accuser against combs, was amended in december to include shawn carter, jay-z accusing him and combs of raping a 13 year old girl in 2000 at an award show after party. jay-z

see there's a little bit of snow falling in the foreground there. the current air temperature in the greater lake tahoe area is 35 degrees. went through that quickly, didn't we? 40 degrees today as an afternoon high with an accumulation of an additional three inches of snow down to 6200ft. snow and wind in the forecast today and on friday. and this is why we have that winter weather advisory in effect until high noon tomorrow. and the highest elevations were anticipating another 15in of snow at kirkwood, where 11in did accumulate yesterday alone. now we go from the mountains to the sea shore, where we have an advisory also that we need to discuss. this is a high surf advisory in effect right now through sunday. and as garcia was alluding to earlier today, we have so many people in town visiting, they're just not aware of how dangerous this situation is. please stay away from the coast and do not climb on the jetties or even the piers. we saw what happened earlier this week. okay, temperatures on

723. the shrinking colorado river is threatening the nation's food supply. water from the river irrigates 15% of the farmland in the u.s, including thousands of acres around san diego. the colorado river is split among seven states and mexico. not only is the river shrinking, but an agreement to divvy the water expires in 2026. some farmers are actually paid to conserve water or not grow certain water guzzling crops. >> when you're in between november and march, a large majority of your lettuce, broccoli, carrots, all of your winter greens are coming from either imperial valley or just across the colorado river from us. yuma, arizona. >> the imperial irrigation district says it's working with farmers on different water

conservation efforts, including helping to buy drip and sprinkler systems, upgrade technologies, and use precision lasers to help maintain the fields. >> hyundai is planning to give free ev charging adapters to drivers of electric cars. the automaker says next year it will send free combined charging system adapters if you own or lease one of these cars. the ioniq five, ioniq six, kona electric, and genesis models. the adapter gives access to 20,000 of tesla's supercharger stations. the free adapter is available to those who receive their vehicles on or before january 31st of this coming year. the social security administration is planning on several changes in 2025, which means some people will get more money. the social security administration said the cost of living adjustment, or cola, will be 2.5% in 2025. this means more than 72 million people will see their monthly social security checks go up by 2.5%. it about matches the rate of inflation for 2024. still, many seniors will need to take a hard look at their finances. >> despite the underwhelming cola adjustment, it's important

>> good morning to you. well, if you pull up to the santa cruz wharf this morning, you're going to see just all this caution tape, making it very clear to you that you should not be here. you should not be walking or driving here near the wharf. and city leaders say they are working on what to do next. debris from the broken wharf is still down in the ocean below, so that's why the beach access around here also closed for an indefinite amount of time. city leaders say engineers and consultants will work on checking out the wharf to see what they need to do to get it back open quickly and safely. >> we have somewhat of a question mark as we move through time, whether it's the wharf, westcliff and i don't think we're by ourselves. i think this is what coastal communities around the world are probably dealing with in that manifestation of climate change. >> all that was a result of a problem from monday, when the part of the wharf collapsed. three men fell into the water,

annual christmas in the park event, located in the heart of downtown san jose. our lamonica peters met with people at plaza de cesar chavez, who headed out with their families for christmas. he sees ice skates, cold mist, mistletoe on christmas night in san jose. >> there's no better place to be than at christmas in the park. >> it's been a tradition since i've been a kid. i've always been with my mom, my family, my dad, and now i'm bringing my wife. >> for over 40 years, the two acre park has transformed into a winter wonderland that people can walk through free of charge. bright lights, christmas trees, holiday displays, rides, food and even snow keep thousands of people from across the state coming back each year. >> and i'm born and raised in san jose, so we come back every holiday. and you know, i haven't been here since i was a kid. >> organizers say this year, christmas in the park is attracting more first time and out of town visitors. the nonprofit group also says donations continue to grow. one

story. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news. >> with most restaurants and stores closed for christmas, the few that were open yesterday did brisk business. one scott seafood location that stayed open was packed with reservations for christmas dinner. many said they were hoping to skip cooking a big holiday feast this year round. >> we've done this the last three years. my wife and i decided that after so many years of marriage, she's been cooking turkey for 50 years. this was a great way to pay her back that we go out for christmas every year. >> i like it. one server at a middle eastern restaurant said many diners were just happy to find something that was open on christmas day, after using their maps app to find one that wasn't closed. >> 736 live. look at the road conditions on interstate 80 heading to the sierra. right now. this is donner summit and the snow is on the ground. roads are slick. be careful if you're heading in that direction. there are chain restrictions in place right now. it kept caltrans busy as crews worked through the

night to clear those sierra passes. their efforts went a long way in helping people get into the mountains to spend the time with family. >> it's crucial. this is this is what we're here for. we take pride in highway 50 and keeping it open and safe for the traveling public. >> skiers were treated to a perfect powder day on christmas. that's great news for businesses in the area, like donner ski ranch. some years, sierra resorts don't get enough snow. but this year, donner ski ranch says it's opening every trail thanks to the recent snowfall. >> it's really a mellow place to ski. it's really accessible and a great place for kids to learn. >> and donner actually honestly gets some of the, i think some of the best snow snowmaking machines were added at its resort, but so far the owners say they haven't had to use them this year. >> all right. let's talk about what's happening up on the mountain. roberto gonzalez, have you headed up there yet? i don't think so. we would have talked

about this. >> yeah. no, we would have. right. yeah. no, i haven't been able to head on up there yet, but, boy, all the folks were the recipient of a white christmas in the greater lake tahoe area. lucky you. over the past 24 hours, nine inches of snow did accumulate at palisades. a little bit more than that at kirkwood. right now we have fog at blue canyon and truckee and south shore all reporting some very light snow. an additional three inches of snow is expected today with the windy conditions. same on friday. this is why we have a winter weather advisory in place for the greater lake tahoe area until high noon tomorrow. and one of my latest observations did report that we're forecasting tomorrow around the early morning hours. wind gusts above 8000ft at 120mph. that will definitely put your ski lifts on hold. be very mindful of the weather and do your homework. 15in of snow expected over the next 24 hours in kirkwood. so from the mountains to the beaches. now we

some of the stories we're following. the bay area coastline is expected to get battered by big waves again in the next couple of days. the national weather service is issuing a high surf advisory, spanning from the north bay all the way down to big sur. it goes into effect at 10:00 this morning, remains until 4:00 sunday afternoon. parts of the coast may see waves as tall as 30ft. let's swing out to sfo here and give you a live look this morning. there are minimal delays at all the bay area's major airports right now. 37

operations at phoenix, arizona. sky harbor airport have returned to normal after gunfire inside one of the terminals. police say a physical altercation led to someone pulling out a gun at a restaurant outside the tsa checkpoint. three people were shot and one was stabbed. all four taken to the hospital, where one is in critical condition. one woman was also arrested. police say everyone involved knew each other prior to the incident. operations, as we said at the airport, have returned to normal now.

>> i do believe that this was a family dispute that escalated. >> i didn't even hear the shots. i didn't even know there was a shot until the police said. they said that there was. it was a shooting. >> the terminal where the shooting occurred is the main hub for southwest and american airlines. san francisco police say a body was found inside of a vehicle involved in a fiery crash near golden gate park. video from the citizen app showing the scene here. it happened before 4:00 yesterday afternoon in the area of park presidio and crossover drive. officers say they arrived on scene to find a single vehicle involved in a collision, and that is when they found the body inside. they have not been able to identify the person, and there is no word yet on the cause of the crash. the head of in-n-out burger is explaining the decision to close its only restaurant in oakland. the company shut down that restaurant near oakland international airport last january. in-n-out president lynsi snyder recently appeared on a show by the conservative video network prageru. she told the host of the show that crime forced the restaurant chain to close that site, even though it was profitable.

coliseum over the bay bridge toll plaza. up. nope. this is 280 down in the south bay and the downtown area again, no problem here with congestion. roads might be just a little bit wet. and now to the bay bridge toll plaza. this picture really doesn't tell the story of what's happening just a handful of miles away from here. so first, when you're going through to pay the toll, you might see a little bit of wet on the road. a couple sprinkles you can see here on the camera lens farther over in daly city. we know on southbound 280 near serramonte there is a crash there, but again, with traffic volumes so light on a day like today, thankfully it's not going to cause anything close to what we would expect on a typical thursday. >> well, now to this story. a family in oakland grieving after a deadly house fire on christmas morning. steven weatherford was the first to realize something was burning and told everyone in the house on oak knoll boulevard, just west of 580, near the zoo. the fire department says he made sure his father, his aunt, his brother all escaped. then he went back into the burning home, hoping to retrieve an engagement ring he was going to give his girlfriend on new year's eve. >> he was going to propose? yes.

you knew he was going to. i didn't know her. they told me this morning. steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out of the house. >> weatherford's girlfriend says his nickname was gummy bear because of his sweet soul. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> three people are without a home this morning after a fire damaged their apartment building in capitola. people who live nearby say they heard an explosion around six on christmas morning, just before a large fire broke out. the apartment complex on monterey avenue has a lot of fire damage. at least three families cannot return. one woman from the community says seeing the building burn, especially on christmas day, was very difficult. >> well, as a child, my friends lived there and we all spent our summers here on long way. this is where i learned to ride my bike. this is where we all grew up as children. so it's very it's very nostalgic to see. and it's sad. it's really sad. >> no injuries have been

reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> the national weather service is warning swimmers, surfers and motorists about coastal waters this weekend. this is a live picture you're looking at here at pacifica, and you can see waves crashing ashore. the region, in fact, is under a high surf advisory from 10:00 this morning to late sunday afternoon. large waves can sweep across beaches without warning and pull people into the ocean, so be careful. waves can reach 20 to 30ft high, and city leaders in santa cruz say there is no timeline to reopen the city's wharf after strong waves ripped it in two earlier this week. the section at the end of the wharf that collapsed had been closed for construction since earlier this year after being damaged in storms last year. the city says it's still too soon to know what they'll do to fix the wharf or make changes in the future. and with more high surf expected today, the focus right now is making sure people do not get hurt from another round of strong waves or floating debris. >> safety and priority of asset protection is guiding those goals. when we start to talk

will they first sell on the news early in the new year before new policies can take effect? maria bartiromo, fox business news, new york. >> it's time this morning. the weather is a big story. roberto gonzalez is on top of it. high surf advisory. we got rain. all that stuff. >> we have it all going on today. we have had it all going on for the past couple of months, to be perfectly honest. i mean, do you remember a few weeks ago that tsunami warning, then the tornado warning? and today we kick started with some more rain showers here in the bay area while you slept. about a third of an inch of rain in the north bay, and about a 10th of an inch of rain in some portions of the east bay this morning. a deck of clouds. also, santa rosa is reporting some visibility issues now with fog. temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. and here you have your visibility report four mile visibility now in half moon bay and two and a half around penngrove and cotati. here's your storm tracker. and you can see that we have some light rain showers around the ukiah area.

and that is snow falling at mount shasta at 33 degrees. we have a winter weather advisory issued there until tomorrow at high noon, and we're expecting about ten more inches of snowfall in that particular area. back at home, some light rain showers around the san mateo coastline here around edgemoor into pacifica. and then now we have a cluster of some activity just around the rose garden district of san jose, back in through milpitas into berryessa. this is a beautiful area of low pressure. the core is way up here in the pacific northwest. this is the frontal boundary that slides through the bay area beginning about 2:00 this morning. behind it, a plume of moisture. so let's track it together. here you have that cloud deck at high noon. so about from 10:00 this morning until about 4:00. completely dry, but cloudy. then here comes the rain at 4:00 in the north bay. the far reaches around the penngrove area, and then it slices through the bay area throughout the evening hours 11:00. oh, look at that right

>> garcia, good morning to you. it's still a cold, rainy morning this morning in the santa cruz county coast. and we'll show you exactly what we're seeing, what's bringing a lot of people out here and what's brought them out here over the last few days, just to take a look for themselves. that is part of a bathroom that was once connected to the pier. that is what broke off that 150 foot section of the pier, washing into the ocean, washing up to the shore. and now it's just sitting there. we talked to some people who are out here that monday morning who said they were surfing. they noticed the waves were getting a little out of hand. they're veteran surfers too. they've been here, been here doing it for decades. and at one point the waves just became too much for them. so they decided to stop. they went home. 20 minutes later, they saw the reports that the wharf had broken off here. now the wharf is entirely closed to the public. so are parts of the beach to buy. if you see on the beach, there's a lot of debris there. there's a lot of some leftover, i guess, destruction that came from the boardwalk. and now city leaders say that they are going to have engineers and consultants

checking out the pier and the wharf to see what they need to do next to open it safely and quickly. >> we have somewhat of a question mark as we move through time, whether it's the wharf, west cliff, and i don't think we're by ourselves. i think this is what coastal communities around the world are probably dealing with in that manifestation of climate change. >> that morning, we know three men fell into the water when the wharf collapsed. two were rescued by rescue. during the day, one was able to swim to safety. officials tell us all three have now recovered from minor injuries. the city, now working on a damage report to try to help answer the question when can this pier, this wharf, this beach finally reopen to the public? that is something that we have not anywhere close to an answer to just yet. but of course, once we get updates from those city leaders and their reports, we will let you know.

meanwhile, we're bringing back closer to home with the spotty scattered showers after a line of frontal system ran through the area earlier today. so that's it right there, and you can see it digging towards southern california, but behind it, plenty of moisture from today through sunday. we're tracking it with our futurecast. the bulk of your day will be dry, mostly cloudy, maybe a hint of some sunshine. rain arrives again in the north bay by 4:00 in the afternoon. spreads across the entire area, with some cells containing moderate to heavy downpours. i haven't seen on our observations any chance of a thunderstorm, but you can see that we do have that heavy rain in the north bay overnight, leaving us with a spotty scattered shower tomorrow morning. we do have that high surf advisory in effect with some of these swells up to 22ft through sunday. stay away from the sea shore temperatures today, 50 to 60 extended forecast in and out of the rain until monday. >> roberta. thank you. warriors

the bay area coastline is expected to get battered by big waves again over the next couple of days. the national weather service has issued a high surf advisory, spanning from the north bay down to big sur, goes into effect at 10:00 this morning and stays in place until 4:00 sunday afternoon. parts of the coast could see waves as high as 30ft. >> authorities in azerbaijan say 38 people were killed when a plane crashed in kazakhstan. the plane was en route from azerbaijan's capital city to the russian city of grozny, when it was diverted and attempted an emergency landing. the azerbaijani president said it was too soon to speculate on the reasons behind the crash. he did say, however, the weather had forced the plane to change from its planned course. around 30 people survived the crash. >> live look now at sfo as we're

seeing the number of delays increased slightly as the morning rolls on in just the past hour or so. the number of delayed flights at sfo doubled to now 73. the number of flights canceled also doubled to nine. those really aren't major problems, though, in the grand scheme of things. oakland airport has seen 20 delays to cancellations so far. san jose reporting 24 delays to cancellations. more than half the delays at all three airports are arrivals, though not departures. >> speaking of travel. travel through american airports hit new records this year, with the tsa reporting several record days for screening. we don't have total numbers for the year yet, but it's expected to push the all time record and 2025 could be just as busy. fox's connor hansen has a look at travel trends for the new year that you may want to consider before making your plans. >> the holidays are among the busiest for travel, but what happens once we flip the calendar to 2025? >> we are seeing four key trends that we anticipate will define travel. >> research by airbnb revealing four trends taking off as we head into the new year. with the
