>> yeah. right, right. because brother can't break with the new wife. no. right, right. oh, i wish them all luck and happiness. good luck to you. yeah. good luck to you. it's fun for us to discuss this kind of sit back and say. >> glad that's not me. exactly, exactly. >> let's take a trip a couple hours to the south here, where debris is still all over the beach near the santa cruz wharf. as you know, parts of that wharf broke off during storms earlier in the week after large waves kept crashing into it. >> the pier and the beach now closed to the public until further notice. ktvu james torres is there to show us how it looks now. good morning to you, james gasia andre. >> good morning to you. well, it is a cold, rainy morning still here in santa cruz county and here near the santa cruz pier. we are off of bluff. that's not too far from the santa cruz boardwalk. you see all the rides, all that is still there. it looks like the beach access is still closed at this point, which lines up with what the city kind of wants to see right now as they wait to figure out what to do next. the wharf, the pier there, not too far away from where we're standing. but what i think is drawing a lot of

attention to this area is the 150 foot piece that broke off. the pier is right here. it's right under us. it washed away into the ocean monday morning. i believe it's part of a bathroom that was on the pier, goes into the ocean and then washes up to shore. and now it's just stuck on this pier right under where we are. and it's brought in a lot of people who just want to take a look and see for themselves. we've heard from the city and some city leaders earlier in the week who say that they are closing off the pier, they're closing off the beaches as well. they are hoping to get some engineers and consultants out to check out the wharf to see how soon and how quickly and how safely they can reopen everything, just to make sure everyone is comfortable and not at risk of dealing with any debris or anything like that. but we have talked to some of those looky loos who have come out here, take the photos to say that they just wanted to keep an eye on it for themselves. >> we were surfing that morning and the waves just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger and unmanageable. >> when was the last time you saw a house or a structure in

the ocean floating around? >> a three men fell into the water. that's according to city leaders. when the wharf collapsed, two were rescued. one was able to swim to safety. officials say. all three have since recovered from minor injuries at this time. still no timeline for when the wharf could possibly reopen. the city says they're working on a damage report. they need to assess a lot of different things when it comes to that wharf, before they can finally answer that question. we're live this morning from santa cruz. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. we see the condition james dealing with right now. so let's get over to roberto gonzalez for a look at the forecast down in santa cruz here as well. >> yeah. let's take a look at the totals so far this morning. it began raining around 2:00 in the morning. and it's spotty and scattered in about a third of an inch of rain in santa rosa to less than a 10th of an inch of rain in the eastern portion of our bay area. our storm tracker. this is live data and we do have

the snow falling. it is on the fly in the mount shasta area. we're up to ten inches of snow is expected in the highest elevation over the next 24 hours. back at home, spotty scattered showers and that will all begin to taper off within the next hour. here, before we see this next plume of moisture, bring us more rain each and every day all the way through sunday. that means more snow in the greater lake tahoe area. winter weather advisory in place right now until high noon, and the greater lake tahoe area and the higher elevation. we're expecting another foot of snow and some very gusty winds. so far, we've picked up about a foot of snow in the kirkwood area. going to see another 16in over the next 24 hours. blowing snow, wind gusts over 8000ft, 120mph. definitely some lifts will be on hold. stay on top of the weather. if you're heading to the greater lake tahoe area, you can see the deterioration in the conditions right now over in the tahoe keys. this is a live weather camera and the

visibility is obscured. we have temperatures currently in the 50s. let's go ahead and track when the next batch of rain will arrive. here's lunchtime. dry skies, cloud cover. rain begins to enter the back door of the north bay by 4 or 5:00 in the afternoon. everybody is pretty much wet from 10:00 to 11:00 this evening, the heaviest rain overnight. so when you wake up for your morning commute, a lot of ponding on the roadways, a scattered shower through the morning hours, and the bulk of your friday will be dry. but between now and saturday morning, another inch of rain along the sea shore. so definitely the soil saturated with a bit of a breeze. there will be downed trees, high surf advisory in place, 22 foot swells about a mile off the coast, but very dangerous conditions at the sea shore do not go to the beaches. temperatures today in the 50s and 60s. and your extended forecast does call for each and every day at least a smattering of rain showers. the heaviest will be tonight and then full on

sunshine on monday. >> roberta. thank you. now to this story. a family in oakland grieving after a deadly house fire on christmas morning. ktvu jesse gary tells us the family simply in shock that their loved one is gone. >> family members say this burned out shell was the hallmark house for the holidays. now it's a painful reminder of the sacrifice of one man and how christmas will never be the same. >> steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out of the house, broken by pain, grief and loss. >> lashawn mayo says she nicknamed her boyfriend steven weatherford gummy bear because he was such a sweet soul. >> he was the kind of guy that any parent would want for their daughter. >> creative and humorous, career driven, but also a published author on the side, weatherford returned to his family home to celebrate the holidays with those closest to him. >> this is a yearly celebration.

this is not one, and this is when i say yearly. i mean going on for 4050 years. this is not one of those things that it's every other year. >> the family spent christmas eve cooking and then around 615 christmas day, a fast moving fire started inside the home. the cause and origin are still under investigation by the oakland fire department. one neighbor, who doesn't want his face shown, says he heard the commotion and rushed to help. >> i heard screams, you know, people screaming saying the house is on fire. so i asked my neighbor, was he out of the home? and he said he was. but then i also heard someone else saying that someone was in there. >> oakland fire officials say weatherford alerted others, making sure his father, aunt and brother escaped. >> he started yelling to the family, there's a fire! there's a fire! i guess he was just trying to save everybody, make sure everybody was out of the house. >> but relatives and officials say weatherford went back to search for the recently purchased engagement ring. he planned to give mayo new year's

and was able to dig him out. >> village center officials say the man who was buried got just minor injuries in the end. officials remind everyone to remember to note the forecast here before you make a trip to hopefully avoid dangerous conditions. >> all right, here's a heartwarming story for the holidays. a dog owner reunites with his four legged friend after 11 years apart. tito barocio got his dog back. gallo at a southern california animal care and control center. his wife gave him the dog as a birthday present, but two girls wandering by the home back in 2013 snatched the canine. he thought he would never see his pet again, but last weekend he received a call from an animal patrol officer. the dog was found wandering the streets in the city of norwalk and was tracked through a microchip implanted. >> been gone 11 years and two months. >> you've been counting. >> oh, yeah. every day you've missed him. i miss him a lot. >> the dog needs plenty of care,

and he walks with a limp and doesn't seem to recognize his old owner actually snapping at him when he got close. but barocio is just thrilled that he has goya back. especially for the holidays. >> all right. later tonight will mark the second night of hanukkah. 15 million jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday known as the festival of lights. hundreds of people came together last night in san francisco's union square, lighting the first candle on a three ton menorah. for the second year in a row, a shadow hangs over the glowing celebration as hamas is still holding jewish jewish hostages in israel. >> just want that were to be over. and we want peace, and we want to be able to just have positive energy as a community. >> members of the jewish community say they'll still celebrate in honor of those who can't. organizers say this is the first large public menorah outside of israel. the festival of lights continues with another candle lit eight nights in a row. thousands gathered at the nation's capital to kick off the holiday with the annual lighting of the national hanukkah memorial. excuse me. menorah.

returning to the nation's food supply. water from the river irrigates 15% of the farmland in the u.s, including thousands of acres around san diego. the colorado river split among seven states and mexico. not only is the river shrinking, but an agreement to divvy the water expires in 2026. some farmers are actually paid to conserve water or not grow certain water guzzling crops.

>> when you're in between november and march, a large majority of your lettuce, broccoli, carrots, all of your winter greens are coming from either imperial valley or just across the colorado river from us. yuma, arizona. >> the imperial irrigation district says it's working with farmers on different water conservation efforts, including helping to buy drip and sprinkler systems, upgrade technologies, and use precision lasers to help maintain fields. >> happening today, the city of san francisco is announcing its christmas tree collection schedule. the event includes chipping trees for recycling. the 2025 recycling schedule goes from january 2nd to january 17th. the collected trees will be taken to a recycling center where they'll be ground into mulch. a reminder here, of course. remove all the tinsel, decorations, lights and take off the tree stand. let's take a peek again at the old question of when does the christmas tree come down? 71% of you say you keep it up through new year's and then that's it. next largest group is pretty small by comparison. 18% say you take it down right after christmas, so maybe you're busy today. only

it's still too soon to know what they will do to fix the wharf or make changes in the future. and with more high surf expected today, the focus right now is making sure people do not get hurt from another round of strong waves or floating debris. >> safety and priority of asset protection is guiding those goals. when we start to talk about future plans for the wharf and what decisions will be made, we'll really be utilizing that data and also our engineering reports to have informed decisions as we meet with our local and regional partners. obviously, lots of community outreach and lots of process to develop those answers. >> i think we have somewhat of a question mark as we move through time, whether it's the wharf, westcliff, and i don't think we're by ourselves. i think this is what coastal communities around the world are probably dealing with in that manifestation of climate change, through the bathroom that collapsed off of the wharf and into the ocean has become somewhat of a tourist

attraction. >> it's now resting along the shoreline near the mouth of the san lorenzo river. >> the bay area coastline is expected to get battered by big waves again over the next couple of days. the national weather service is issuing a high surf advisory, spanning from the north bay all the way down to big sur. goes into effect at 10:00 here remains in place until 4:00 sunday afternoon. parts of the coast may see waves as high as 30ft. today, people in indonesia visited mass graves to remember those who died in the massive indian ocean tsunami 20 years ago. in one village, more than 14,000 unidentified victims are buried. the capital of indonesia's northern region was hit by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake, triggering the massive tsunami. it killed some 230,000 people across a dozen countries, was one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded. >> president elect donald trump announced today his pick for ambassador to panama. the selection is important since trump is threatening to gain control of the panama canal. reporter grady trimble on the

at phoenix, arizona sky harbor airport. returning to normal now after gunfire inside one of the terminals. police say a physical altercation led to someone pulling out a gun at a restaurant outside of the tsa checkpoint. three people were shot, one stabbed, all four taken to the hospital, one in critical. we're told one woman also arrested. police say everyone involved knew each other prior to the incident. as we said before, operations have now returned to normal. >> i do believe that this was a family dispute that escalated. >> i didn't even hear the shots. i didn't even know there was a shot until the police said that there was. it was a shooting. >> the terminal where the shooting occurred is the main hub for southwest and american airlines to san francisco. >> police are investigating a deadly and fiery crash near golden gate park. we have video here from citizen app. it
