having a high crime rate. good evening, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. oakland police say the suspects used a vehicle like a battering ram, smashing through the entrance of that lucky supermarket store and stealing an atm. ktvu is jesse gary live in montclair? in the neighborhood there tonight. and, jesse, people living there are pretty stunned by all of this. >> that's right. frank. i can tell you, in 20 years of reporting on the east side, maybe this is the second time i've been montclair clear for a crime. the contractors have spent the better part of this day boarding up one of two entrances to this lucky store here on mountain boulevard in montclair. this after this store was targeted for the second time this week in the predawn darkness thursday, a cleanup on aisle one and elsewhere inside and outside this montclair grocery store, there's usually a door with a ramp, an escalator ramp, and it was closed off.
5:01 pm
>> so i came in here and i saw it was closed off from in there, and i that's all i knew. >> oakland police say several suspects in multiple vehicles crashed through the glass doors. took items, including the atm, which is now empty and in the parking lot, then left. >> nothing ever happens here, so it's kind of a real unusual thing. but maybe people are desperate these days. >> contractors working to board up the damage say this is the second time this store has been targeted. the montclair village association says thieves did the same type of break-in christmas eve. experts say the season could be the reason for the perceived rise in crime. >> this is a crime of opportunity in that after hours holiday season, nobody's going to be there. and so there's now ample opportunity to be able to grab the atm machine, break it open, get the cash out of there and get out of the area quickly. >> closed businesses aren't the only ones targeted. also on christmas eve, two crash and
5:02 pm
grab type crimes in san leandro, with suspects telling employees at this restaurant to get out. >> it is a crime that is easy enough to carry out, and the likelihood of being arrested is low. >> it's terrible and i think we have to. we have to stop. what's all this? there's a lot of hate going on in the world. there's a lot of people doing negative things. >> back in montclair, the village association says security is increased during the holidays because many of its member businesses and patrons worry about such threats. >> it's hard to go shopping and spend your money in a place when you have to worry about crimes like this. >> you would think because this is a peaceful area, you know? but it doesn't matter where you are. it's not safe. nowhere. >> there are security cameras around the grocery store and along mountain boulevard here in montclair, which could provide clues to oakland police. if you have any information about this crime or any smash-and-grab during the holiday week, you're asked to call police. we're live in montclair this evening. jesse

gary, ktvu, fox two news. frank will go back across the city of oakland to you. >> all right. jesse. on christmas night, of all things, any leads whatsoever on this crime? >> well, i think once they get a chance to scroll through and really look at that video in a granular sense, they probably will come up with some leads as far as vehicle license plate number, etcetera. >> all right. jesse garrett live in the montclair neighborhood on this thursday night. thank you. jesse. tonight, we've learned san francisco police plan to hold a town hall next monday, where they will reveal some new details on that deadly police shooting. this was last friday when officers say they shot and killed an armed man at union square, who turned out to be a security guard at the dior boutique. there, police claim the man was wanted for hitting two pedestrians and a bicyclist with a vehicle hours earlier during a chase. new at five tonight, a san jose man is under arrest for operating a suspected

brothel in a residential neighborhood after receiving multiple tips from the community. police executed a search warrant at a home on south 24th street last week after a month long investigation. 44 year old zen wang was taken into custody and booked for pimping and pandering. two female human trafficking survivors were found and provided with resources, and deputies in sonoma county say they arrested a woman who lied during a traffic stop, claiming she was only 12 years old. this all happened last week near highway 37 and arnd drive. ficials say one deputy recogniz the vehicle from a cent theft, which also had broken headlights and expired registration, and inside the car s a 36 year old and a 29 year old who gave a fake name and said she was born in 2012. tur out she had an outstandi warrant for retail theft and contra costa county, and there were over $2,000 of stolen goods

inside the car. both suspects were arrested. turning now to bay area weather, we're looking live at pacifica where there is a high surf advisory in effect this evening as dangerous waves threaten our california coastline. the message from first responders tonight. stay out of the water. stay away from the water. we get now. get more now from ktvu joey horta, who is live on the ground in pacifica tonight. joey, how is it looking out there? >> well, frank, it's starting to rain now at this point, but we have seen some rough surf out here at times during the day. but the national weather service is telling us that we could see wave heights reach up to the level of a three story building. powerful waves churning off the bay area coastline. the national weather service predicting waves reaching 20 to 30ft high through sunday. >> that's horrifying. get to high ground.
5:06 pm
>> they look pretty rough. i've seen them pretty bad before, and it's good just to kind of stay away. >> a couple dozen surfers off pacifica taking advantage before the bigger waves roll in. >> pretty gnarly, but not i mean, i've been i've been out. and worse, it's like smashing into a wall. you definitely feel the water. you feel the force out there. if you're fighting the ocean, you're duck diving. it's a lot of effort. >> experts warn dangerous waves can strike without warning. roman romero grew up here and takes in the views at pacifica pier every week. respecting the ocean by watching the waves from higher ground, they explode over the railing here. >> it's quite amazing. you don't want to play on the beach, that's for sure. because people, you know, get swept away every year. >> while the larger waves may be further off the coast, the churning can quickly hit the rocks and beaches, pulling people out to sea. first responders are warning never turn your back on the ocean. >> once you get in, it's like a
5:07 pm
sudden shock and chill to your body. >> the result, experts say, can be dramatic increases in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, accelerating the risk of drowning. >> people have died at this beach because of rip currents. people's unfamiliarity with the water and what it does. >> the spectacle drawing in. curious beachgoers, admiring the view from a safe distance. >> mother nature's you know she's trippy. >> i feel the power of nature. and when i feel that it i feel humble. because i am looking at something so powerful, so dangerous, but so beautiful at the same time. >> now pacifica pier is closed. this high surf advisory continues through sunday afternoon, and we could see 30 foot waves up to that level between now and then. we're live in pacifica tonight. joey horng,
5:08 pm
ktvu, fox two news. >> all righty joey, thank you. with that and we now turn to our chief meteorologist, bill martin for a look at conditions out there. and i know you're a big surfer, but you probably stay out of the water, too, right? >> yeah. absolutely. frank. i mean, that's the watchword. and i've been talking about it a lot, literally the last month and prior to that, the three weeks before that. i mean, we've had big, large surf along the coast, dangerous surf. we were doing news stories in bodega bay. we had issues along the beaches we have had for the last month and a half or two months. it's big. this is that live picture. this is joey's joey horn's camera down there. that's the pier. so pacifica pier is about 20ft tall to the to the bottom of that thing. so it's not it's some of these waves i was watching earlier are cresting right and hitting the bottom of the pier. so it's 20ft of white water hitting the pier, but it's also not as big as it's going to be tomorrow. tomorrow is going to jack back up into 18 to 20 foot range. and the intervals are the different. the time between wavelengths, between the crest and crest is like 20 right now it's 15 seconds. it's going to go up to
5:09 pm
like 20s again. and that's when the waves really get big. and that's the day that the santa cruz pier got washed away. the intervals were somewhere. one of the boys showed up a 30 foot 30 foot wave at 20. was it 21 seconds? i think it was 21 seconds, which was just tweaked the buoy at that. and that's the biggest surf i've seen in a long time along the coast. so the aleutian islands are lit up. that's where these swells are coming from, and that's where the rain is coming from. joey also mentioned the rain, the scattered showers that are falling out there. we have had a few scattered showers, you know, over the last 24 hours. but as we go into the next 6 to 9, 6 to 8 hours, so between now and 3:00 in the morning it's going to go in pretty good. now you might get an inch and a half in marin county. you get a half an inch in san francisco, you'll get a quarter inch in san jose. roughed out numbers. the problem with this event is the snow levels run high. the snow levels. this is a warmer air mass coming in some tropical moisture. so the snow levels are going to go all the way up to
5:10 pm
pass level. they've been changing up all day on 50 and 80. that's going to change with rain showing up at those passes right at the pass level and certainly at lake tahoe by tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon. so kind of a sloppy day up there tomorrow. and then things cool off after that. so winter weather advisory in the mountains, high surf warning along the coast. we've got more rain coming. but the flooding concerns not really a concern as of now, because most of this stuff looks like it's going to be further north and not that extreme. >> all right, bill, thank you for that. meantime, there is still plenty of debris all over beaches near the santa cruz wharf and boardwalk. after a section of that pier collapsed into the ocean. that happened on monday, as ktvu james torres reports that wharf and the beach are now shut down to the public until further notice. >> monday morning, waves battered the santa cruz wharf enough that a 150 foot chunk of it broke off into the ocean. and now that piece is lodged into a bluff right under where we're standing. debris scattered all
5:11 pm
over the beach near the santa cruz boardwalk. it's now closed, along with the wharf full of caution tape and now missing a big piece. >> last year it was capitola, and i mean, it took the wharf down there. now this. >> a pair of surfers say they were here monday morning when a bathroom building washed off the santa cruz wharf. >> we were surfing that morning, and the waves just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger and unmanageable. >> those waves carried that building to a bluff right next to the boardwalk, entirely in one piece. it's very odd. >> it's really weird to see it just. we don't have much control over nature. we really don't. and this is just something we've lived with for a long time. and yet there it is, right there. so i can't imagine how they're going to get it cleaned up. >> it makes you think about how how powerful mother nature is. i mean, we just had a tornado in scotts valley. >> city leaders now working to get engineers and consultants to
5:12 pm
the wharf to check out its structural integrity. they hope to create a damage report that can help decide how long until the wharf and beach can reopen to the public. >> safety and priority of asset protection is guiding those goals. when we start to talk about future plans for the wharf and what decisions will be made, we'll really be utilizing that data and also our engineering reports to have informed decisions as we meet with our local and regional partners. obviously, lots of community outreach and lots of process to develop those answers. >> reporting in santa cruz i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> coming up here next on ktvu news at five. protecting californians from crippling medical debt. how a new law will help patients pay off their bills. plus, coming up at 530. a week long celebration of african american culture kicks off how cities across the bay area are ringing in the first night of kwanzaa. but first up, a day of

5:47 pm
exactly which mugs to grab, depending on who walks in, like the mayor. >> so they got me a little little mirror matte one. so when i come in and it's a nice, it's a good little extra touch that i love this mug. it's been through everything with me. and then my wife ten years ago when i first brought her here, i had her a mug. >> but perhaps the main reason people keep coming back is the man who cooks all the classic dishes for them. it's phenomenal to watch jesus in action. owner jesus diaz know how to make it just right. how do you do that? >> i guess from my experience, from being here 27 years, jesus came to the u.s. from michoacan, mexico, as a teenager at age 23. >> he became a cook here thanks to his dad, who was a longtime dishwasher and busboy. soon it was a family affair. >> that's how my brother got the job here. and that's how i got the job here. and then that's how my sister got the job here. this and right here. >> the restaurant was previously
5:48 pm
called ann's sunshine cafe, run by a woman named ann schofield. and she was looking for someone to eventually take over when she retired. >> she told me once the first day i started working here, she told me that she was going to give it to me. >> ann was here every single day at that at that grill, and her sister was running up and down taking orders. i watched jesus grow up doing this work. i watched his daddy in the back washing dishes, and i watched his sister manage everybody. >> ann watched it too. she saw jesus put in the work behind that bar every day, cooking for her customers. the families grew close over the years, and when jesus became a naturalized u.s. citizen in 2002 and made sure to celebrate. >> she threw me a party here, which that was a surprise because i had no idea after working here, like at the end of my shift at 3:00, then all the people start coming here and yeah, it feels great. >> in 2014, ann followed through
5:49 pm
on her promise. jesus became the owner of sunshine cafe, and during the pandemic, he opened a mexican restaurant next door, sol y luna. as well as building this outdoor patio for even more customers to come in. it's our go to place now. >> they have takeout right next door, mexican food, and sometimes we cater stuff for special occasions. >> ann passed away in august of 2023. jesus will always remember she helped him accomplish the american dream. >> i'm very thankful for her, you know, for giving me this opportunity and giving me this opportunity to continue what she started back in 1980. and i like the support of all the community here. yeah, and i'm very thankful for all. pleasant hill and the surrounding areas. yeah, that they've been here with me for a long, long time. i'm so proud of them. >> and the customers say he is the reason they keep coming back. >> i've never seen anybody work as hard as that young man. and for him to take over was a blessing, because there's very few places you go that you walk
5:50 pm
in and somebody says your name and says, hello. you know, we check in on each other's families. >> so it's become like a family to me here, to the years of success. >> boiled down to sunshine cafe's simple recipe. >> you're always greeted kindly, you're treated nicely, and the service is prompt. you don't have to wait a long time. >> good food, good service and good people. >> i'm 91 now and i've been coming here for, i don't know how many thousand years. >> in pleasant hill, cristina rendon, ktvu, fox two news. >> all righty then. we're going to start off with the long range model. and then we'll end up with the five day forecast, which will pretty much do duplicate or at least give you the reasoning behind what i'm thinking here. here's where we are now. scattered showers are falling throughout the bay area. this is going to be tonight. this is an evening event basically. and now we take it to midnight. that's when the front starts to pass through. right there you can see the bay area. i know it's kind of hard to see san francisco. the yellows and reds up in northern cal, up in
5:51 pm
northern bay area, up towards marin county. and then you see it kick through pretty quick. so by 8 a.m. friday morning see ya. so i think tomorrow it's raining overnight. it's raining now. it's the best time to get rain right overnight. you wake up tomorrow, i think you're getting your stuff done. and then here we go into friday evening. looks nice as well. and then we go into saturday. we get another drive by system. that one's a little further north this time. that's 7 a.m, but that will provide a little drizzle in the marin county watershed. and then it pulls north again. so you get a little bit of shower activity possible on saturday. but i'm not i think that's going to be just nothing. and so saturday looks fine. and then sunday this is kind of a recent development sunday about 7 a.m. we do get this area which is going to be further north, but now it looks like the model pushed it further south. so sunday morning looks like it might be a little something. and then it kind of kind of lingers in the day and the mountains. of course, all this means continued snow starts off as a high snow level tonigh. works its way down as we go through the next couple of days, but it's just going to be on and
5:52 pm
off chains up there for the next few days. and based on what i just showed you, a lot of that stuff's going to stick up in the mountains. so we've got golden gate bridge busy. you can see the traffic, you can see a little bit of rain on the roadways too. so it's raining there. the current rainfall, the yellows represent a little bit heavier rainfall. you can see it's not a classic front. it's just very moist air. warmer air pushing inland, hits the hills, hits the montara mountain, hits marin county watershed, goes up, expands, cools and condenses and you get rain. orographic lifting essentially is what that is. so here's that moisture plume that would be a part of an atmospheric river, or it is an atmospheric river, if you want to call it that. but it's really just some tropical moisture that's now been entrained. and it's in it's in a fair, kind of a fair weather zone. there's not a lot of dynamics here except a lot of moisture. and we are going to see a bunch of rain, not, you know, some rain. we're going to see up to an inch of rain in the marin county. inch and a half. but we're going to see a bunch of wind, especially in the lake tahoe area. so the windy conditions overnight tonight. so what i'm showing you
5:53 pm
and what i've just shown you is all kind of low grade stuff, right? way different than what was being forecast last week where it was like, okay, ares and this and that. and the other thing, they're still out there. there's components of ares but atmospheric rivers. but they're really kind of missing us for the most part. at least that's how it looks. so there you go. there's the five day forecast, frank. we'll see you back here at six. >> we'll see at six. bill, thank you for that. coming up next at five. a story of survival in utah as a man races to rescue his own brother from being buried alive by an avalanche. also ahead, chewed up and spit out. see the moments a pro rfer sur

with the utah avalanche center. he's describing an incident that took place late tuesday morning. >> it was a party of two brothers, and they went out for a ride into the steep hollow area. one of them was riding across the slope or side, hilling across a fairly large bowl when he triggered the avalanche. >> reed says that avalanche came down and caught one of the brothers was carried about 150 yards by the snow before he was buried. down below, he says, luckily, both men had all of the equipment necessary for backcountry travel. >> the brother, who was not buried, used his transceiver to find the brother who was buried, and it got him pretty close. and when he got close enough, he could see a couple fingers sticking out of the snow of his brother and was able to dig him out. >> wade says the man who was buried had minor injuries. both men were able to ride out of the

backcountry. a much different outcome compared to another avalanche that happened in cache county 16 years ago on christmas eve with a party of four young men rode up providence canyon and only about maybe 15 minutes from logan, when somebody, one of the party or two of the party of four triggered the avalanche. two of the riders, 22 year old eric jorgensen and 23 year old jesse johnson, both from utah, were killed. we spoke about some things that can be done to avoid those scenarios. >> number one, always access and read the forecast. the forecast that day, it was a considerable avalanche. as it is avalanche danger. and that's actually the same danger that it is here in logan today. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at six. >> it has been days of dangerous, deadly and destructive waves. and it's not over yet. the warnings about the

dangerous conditions will be in effect through the weekend, all the way to sunday. good evening. i'm christien kafton a message from first responders tonight. stay away from the water. some spots. seeing as many as 20 or 30 foot waves. ktvu joey hord spent the day on the coast. >> some rough surf at times here at pacifica today, but the national weather service is predicting we could see wave heights reaching up to the height of a three story building. powerful waves churning off the bay area coastline. the national weather service predicting waves reaching 20 to 30ft high through sunday. >> that's horrifying. get to high ground. >> they look pretty rough. i've seen them pretty bad before, and it's just kind of stay away. >> a couple dozen surfers off pacifica taking advantage before the bigger waves roll in. >> pretty gnarly, but not i mean, i've been i've been out in
