christien kafton that high surf warning extending through this weekend with dangerous waves that could reach three stories high. they're threatening the california coastline, especially here in the bay area. ktvu is joey jorda has more from first responders, whose message is clear. they say stay alert and stay away from the coast. >> some rough surf at times here at pacifica today, but the national weather service is predicting we could see wave heights reaching up to the height of a three story building. powerful waves churning off the bay area coastline. the national weather service predicting waves reaching 20 to 30ft high through sunday. >> that's horrifying. get to high ground. they look pretty rough. i've seen them pretty bad before, and it's just kind of stay away. >> a couple dozen surfers off pacifica taking advantage before the bigger waves roll in. >> pretty gnarly, but not i mean, i've been i've been out.

and worse, it's like smashing into a wall. you definitely feel the water. you feel the force out there. if you're fighting the ocean, you're duck diving. it's a lot of effort. >> experts warn dangerous waves can strike without warning. roman romero grew up here and takes in the views at pacifica pier every week. respecting the ocean by watching the waves from higher ground, they explode over the railing here. >> it's quite amazing. you don't want to play on the beach, that's for sure. because people, you know, get swept away every year. >> while the larger waves may be further off the coast, the churning can quickly hit the rocks and beaches, pulling people out to sea. first responders are warning never turn your back on the ocean. >> once you get in, it's like a sudden shock and chill to your body. >> the result, experts say, can be dramatic increases in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, accelerating the risk of drowning. >> people have died at this beach because of rip currents. people's unfamiliarity with the water and what it does.

>> the spectacle drawing in. curious beachgoers, admiring the view from a safe distance. >> mother nature's you know. she's trippy. >> i feel the power of nature. and when i feel that it, i feel humble. because i am looking at something so powerful, so dangerous, but so beautiful at the same time. >> in pacifica, joey hornick ktvu, fox two news that beach warning coming as there is still plenty of debris all over the beaches near the santa cruz wharf after waves battered that wharf, causing a 150 foot chunk of it to break off into the ocean on monday. >> the debris scattered all over the beach near the santa cruz boardwalk, the beach and wharf now closed. all that debris has lodged into a bluff right next to the boardwalk. residents there say it's a jarring sight.

>> we were surfing that morning and the waves just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger and unmanageable. it's really weird to see it just we don't have much control over nature. >> we really don't. and this is just something we've lived with for a long time. and yet there it is right there. so i can't imagine how they're going to get it cleaned up. >> city leaders are working to get engineers and consultants to the wharf to check out its structural integrity. they hope to create a damage report, which could help decide how long until that wharf and beach can reopen to the public. meantime, up in the sierra, there was snow for christmas and more is on the way for the ski resorts. light snow was falling at palisades tahoe resort this afternoon. they say the holidays are off to a great start, with nearly a foot of fresh snow in just the past week, and almost all of their lifts, they say, are open. earlier on the four, we talked live with palisades maddie condon, who said that conditions on the slopes are excellent,

with a 59 inch base of snow. >> i went skiing today and i didn't have to wait in any lines. it was fantastic. it was great. yeah, we have the most uphill lift capacity of any resort in north america, meaning we can move more people uphill than anywhere else. so that being said, even with people coming, we're expected to have, you know, be able to spread people out and have some really great skiing. >> there is a winter weather advisory still in place in the lake tahoe area until noon tomorrow. chains are required tonight on interstate 80 and highway 50. as always, caltrans warning drivers to make sure they head out the door prepared for snow along the coast. >> they've got snow. >> and back here in the bay area, that forecasted rain is starting to make its way through. let's take a look at san jose, where rain has started to come down a bit in the last hour or so. you can see some people there with rain jackets and umbrellas out, and those slow, those roads getting wet with rain. let's go now to our

chief meteorologist, bill martin. and bill, that is just the beginning. we've got more rain in the forecast. >> yeah, it's raining pretty hard out there right now. we've got some urban and small stream flood advisories in the north bay, around napa, around marin county north and towards santa rosa. it's raining hard on the golden gate bridge. nothing really unusual about this particular weather event, except maybe the warmer air moving in and creating a higher snow level. those snow levels are going to go all. it's going to be raining at the lake probably tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon it will be raining, perhaps at 6000ft. so it's a warmer system. that's what we're getting. all the rain, heavy rain falling right now. it will fall for the next few hours. then it goes away and tomorrow turns out to be a pretty nice day. for the most part. this is that urban and small stream flood advisory the areas and it makes sense. you're getting. we're expecting another inch of rain in these areas in blue tonight. and so they've already had a half inch of rain. so that's enough. it's wet. the ground is pretty much saturated right now this time of year. and

you can see this subtropical moisture just coming streaming in off the pacific. it's a warmer air mass. so we're getting a lot of rain all the way up into portland and seattle. here's the model. this is at midnight. the rain starts to move through. that's the back end. and look how quickly it's gone. it's 7 a.m. friday morning. it's i mean, it's damp, but it's not heavy rain. and then friday there's your friday just went right by. not too bad. i mean it's going to be cloudy. it might be a little drizzle here and there, but friday you're going to get it done. here we go into saturday morning a few sprinkles in the north bay. most of the activity is further north there saturday afternoon. and then we look at sunday and then we get this little tweak comes through sunday morning. that'll be interesting. models are sort of still not certain on that one. but then it sort of clears up sunday late afternoon. so we'll see how it works out. let's just go, you know, 24, 36 hours at a time. and right now that sets us up with rain overnight tonight. and then we get ourselves into a situation where we'll get a nice

day tomorrow. and then as we go into tomorrow night and saturday morning, maybe a sprinkle and then saturday night into sunday, maybe a little more rain than that. so it's kind of one of these on again off again things. i'll take it. the five day forecast i'll see you tonight at ten christian. >> all righty bill, thank you very much. a lucky supermarket in oakland's montclair neighborhood cleaning up today after a second overnight smash and grab. police say several suspects used multiple cars to crash through the entrance and steal merchandise before driving off. that includes the atm now empty that atm left in the parking lot. the montclair village association says the thieves did the same type of break in at the same location on christmas eve. according to experts, the holiday season could be the reason for the perceived rise in crime in a typically low crime area. >> this is a crime of opportunity in that after hours holiday season, nobody's going to be there. and so there's an

playoffs. the team has struggled all season long in just about every aspect of the game, including the special teams and kicker jake moody, who has slumped in the second half of the season, missing a number of big field goals in total. he's missed seven of his 30 attempts this year, but he also missed a number of weeks with a high ankle sprain and is kicking foot now. we heard from moody, who says he is keeping his head up and his eyes on the future. >> that's the great thing about kicking is, you know, you can be as talented as, you know, whoever and you can you can struggle. and, you know, i feel like this year i've struggled. it doesn't really waver like my confidence or anything. i feel like, you know, throughout my entire life, i've gone through struggles. i've gone through high points. you got to be consistent and you can't be changing too many things. otherwise, you'll kind of just overwhelmed by everything you're trying to.

>> head coach kyle shanahan says he's still optimistic about moody's future in the niners franchise. shanahan noted it's important to remember that moody was 12 for 13 prior to suffering that high ankle sprain. coach, though, says he's hopeful that moody can head into the off season with a clean slate. and despite the rough season for the red and gold, the team is looking to boost fans spirits with a rally this weekend. they will be hosting the detroit lions at levi's on monday night football. the rally is set from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. this sunday, december 29th at big al's in milpitas. the event that's free and you can watch for more information on the 49ers website. well, steph curry and lebron james delivered another christmas day classic, even if the result wasn't exactly what us dubs fans were hoping for. the nba is certainly celebrating today, though the league says yesterday's games were the most watched on christmas day since

make it just right. >> how do you do that? >> i guess from my experience from being here 27 years, jesus came to the u.s. from michoacan, mexico, as a teenager at age 23. >> he became a cook here thanks to his dad, who was a long time dishwasher and busboy. soon it was a family affair. >> that's how my brother got the job here. and that's how i got the job here. and then that's how my sister got the job here. this and right here. >> the restaurant was previously called ann's sunshine cafe, run by a woman named ann schofield. and she was looking for someone to eventually take over when she retired. >> she told me once the first day i started working here, she told me that she was going to give it to me. >> ann was here every single day at that at that grill, and her sister was running up and down taking orders. i watched jesus grow up doing this work. i watched his daddy in the back washing dishes, and i watched his sister manage everybody.

>> ann watched it too. she saw jesus put in the work behind that bar every day, cooking for her customers. the families grew close over the years, and when jesus became a naturalized u.s. citizen in 2002 and made sure to celebrate. >> she threw me a party here, which that was a surprise because i had no idea after working here, like at the end of my shift at 3:00, then all the people start coming here and yeah, it feels great. >> in 2014, ann followed through on her promise. jesus became the owner of sunshine cafe, and during the pandemic, he opened a mexican restaurant next door, sol y luna. as well as building this outdoor patio for even more customers to come in. it's our go to place now. >> they have takeout right next door, mexican food, and sometimes we cater stuff for special occasions and passed away in august of 2023. >> jesus will always remember she helped him accomplish the american dream. >> i'm very thankful for her, you know, for giving me this

works and recycling officials announced the city's christmas tree recycling schedule at an event at civic center plaza this morning. the 2025 recycling schedule runs from january 2nd to january 17th. and a reminder crews ask that you remove all the tinsel, decorations, tree stands and lights from your trees before putting them out on the curb so they can be turned into compost. >> this is almost 300 tons of trees. it's a tremendous amount of material, and we want to keep them all out of the landfill. trees come from the earth, and we need to turn them into compost so we can get them back to the earth. >> recology crews will pick up christmas trees on your regular pickup day. just put them next to your trash and recycling bins. this is a service that you've already paid for city customers, and it's an annual celebration of african culture. tonight kicks off the first day of kwanzaa. we're taking a live look right now at san francisco's city hall. you can see it lit up brightly for the
