he grew up. >> but none of that made any difference to the killer who gunned him down while he rode his bike only three blocks from his home in miami, florida. on his way to do homework at a friend's house. he never made it. >> there isn't anyone that i've spoken to who knew brian, whether it's his friends or his family who wasn't able to immediately convey this profound sense of loss. you know, a uniquely kind soul that had been lost to us. it was an awful, awful case to pick up. >> we first heard of brian herrera thanks to an email sent by his heartbroken step mother, anabel. we are desperate and need help in solving this case, she wrote. our family needs help bringing brian the justice he deserves. the murder happened only days before christmas, in broad daylight in the middle of a residential neighborhood. and

yet, not a single witness has stepped forward to help find the killer. you asked us to look into this story. what do you think we can do for you? >> well, i'm hoping that someone who saw what happened that day is willing him to come forth and give information on what happened. we would like closure. brian deserves justice. >> anabel herrera became brian's stepmother when he was four years old, but she misses him today as only a mother can. and she will never forget the day she got the worst news of her life. >> this is something completely devastating. it's life changing, and it's something you never get over. >> brian's father, william herrera, was at work when he got a visit from police. >> they told me they found him laying on the street. and i was, like, crazy. i didn't know what to do, to say. and that's when i realized brian was not with us anymore. >> christmas for the herrera's

would never be the same. >> on christmas eve, my husband had to go identify his son's body. then christmas day, we were planning his funeral. >> while the police remain tight lipped about the details of brian herrera's murder, his parents have now taken on the role of playing detective, and they say that they found out some information. they believe that brian ran into someone right here. >> he was intercepted right here, right in front of this house. most likely, people tried to rob him. he tried to evade them with his bike, and he couldn't overrun them. >> you know, it's been so long now, and we still haven't, you know, obtained an arrest and all these, you know, the neighbors, unfortunately, they're scared to speak, but we know that they saw, you know, everyone knows pretty much who did this. and they're scared to come forward and give information. >> investigators need help. they say brian was in the allapattah neighborhood of miami just after

11 a.m. he was riding on north 11th avenue toward the expressway when he was accosted and shot near the intersection of northwest 39th street. sergeant diaz was one of the first to arrive at the crime scene, and remembers well what he found. >> i actually found brian's backpack. now what i was expecting to find was narcotics or firearms, because it's so typical for us to have cases that involve gang members. but when i looked through his bag, what i actually found was drawings of spider-man. i found science papers with a's on them. i found trading cards, you know, everything that would indicate that this was, in fact, a child who had been shot. and that is a that's a really tough thing to have to see. every night when i go to bed, i think about brian herrera. i think, you know, we

need to close that case. and as long as it's open, i'm going to feel that way. >> the challenge is getting witnesses to speak out. >> we drove by the area many times, and all the neighbors would come out to tell us what they saw that day, and then all of a sudden it stopped. nobody wanted to say anything. and if i would confront someone. hey, remember you told me? i don't know, i didn't say that. the people are scared. >> even in their new home. memories of brian are everywhere in this frame. a special way to honor brian for a high school graduation he would miss. >> i notice your son's high school diploma on the wall. >> it was a mixture of emotions that day. it was beautiful, but it was very sad not seeing him walk down that aisle. >> you said you were wearing his shoes yesterday. yeah. >> every once in a while. >> tell me about that. >> we had the same size shoes, you know, and like, when i wear them, i feel like i connected

you're going to tell us. >> oh, jesus christ. >> the screams of a young mother with a knife to her throat. oh! >> i thought that she was dying right there. >> what happened to leslie bassanelli? and who was the monster wielding the knife? >> she had a cut on her face. from her. from her lip, all the way almost to her ear. >> growing up in the sleepy hamlet of moscow, pennsylvania, leslie bassanelli gained a reputation for her blissful, carefree approach to life. >> she's such a kind soul. she'd do anything for you. >> leslie is a very kind hearted person and has, in fact, gotten awards at work for being the most liked person by customers in those kinds of things, so we're very proud of that. >> after high school, leslie began dating tim mcgoff.

>> in the beginning, the things she was happy and things seemed to be going great for them, but her parents saw a different side of tim. >> he was a controller, and he liked to punish her. >> then mother nature dropped a bombshell. a baby boy named colin. >> the pregnancy was unexpected. neither one of them had the funds to establish a home. and so my wife and i talked about it and decided that we would make our home their home. >> leslie noticed that tim began to drink more and work less. their refrigerator filled top to bottom with beer. >> he spent most of his time in the back room in the lower level of our house, watching tv and drinking, and leslie told family and friends the heavy drinking turned her lover into a monster, and when she became pregnant a second time, things got even worse.

>> he's choked her. at one time, she told me and pushed her while she was pregnant. >> at this point, it was the yelling, the like towards colin and then towards her, and you could just see, like the little boy that colin was, was starting to change. and she noticed it too, because she was she changed too. she was more quiet and walked on eggshells, and she was just a different person. >> leslie found the abuse too much and then found the courage to finally leave her boyfriend. leslie reconnected with a childhood sweetheart, craig hoover. hoover was recently separated and had two young children of his own. >> our relationship seemed pretty perfect. we were. we had a lot of good times, a lot of laughs. >> but there was someone who thought it wasn't so perfect. tim mcgoff that's the highest risk for any victim of domestic

violence is when they're leaving or when they have left. >> i don't think she realized how significant the hatred that he had for her, that hatred reached its boiling point on a weekend when mcgough was scheduled to have a visit with his suns, but the boys decided they would rather stay home to play with craig's kids. craig had surprised leslie with his two girls coming in for the weekend. you know, it's not unusual for kids wanting to be with other kids. and in this particular case, young colin wanted to spend time with leslie and craig and his two daughters. >> that evening, leslie and craig left the kids with her parents. leslie put on a thick scarf to keep the winter cold at bay, but a cold snap would be the least of her concerns. immediately after they pulled out of the driveway, craig knew something was wrong. >> a car had pulled out right behind us, and i had asked

leslie if he had noticed any headlights when we pulled out of her driveway, and she said no. and i'm like, well, you know, this car came out of nowhere and the car had disappeared, and we pulled out, and then we traveled a couple more miles. there was a car on the side of the road and we pulled up and i'm like, there's the same car on the side of the road. i said, you know, it's kind of strange. and she kind of brushed it off. >> was craig being paranoid or did leslie have a fuming ex on her trail? on their way home, the mysterious car reappears and the hair on the back of craig's neck is standing at full attention. >> i pulled up to the stop sign and i looked over and i'm like, there's that same car. i said, i think we're being followed. >> leslie calls 911. >> okay, where are they now? >> right now we're going to be passing by north pocono bagel. all right. almost at 307. >> now passing north pocono bagel and finding that anytime we try to, you know, kind of

>> leslie! leslie! >> leslie! come on. leslie! leslie! ma'am. ma'am, where are you? >> i could see him standing in the middle of the road, holding her ponytail and a knife in his hand. i was too far away to do anything else, and i just looked at him and i said. i said, tim, you got two kids at home and. and he just looked at me and he said, i'll kill both of you. and then he grabbed ahold of her ponytail, and then he tried to slice her throat. and then she grabbed ahold of her throat, and i thought that she was dying right there. >> the brutal knife attack was savage, but despite a deep and violent stab, a miraculous moment, leslie's life was

spared. >> that was the most horrific moment of my life. because i thought i was going to die. i started to run. i saw tim standing in the middle of the roadway with a knife like this, it just this awful. evil glare. he put the knife in my mouth and sliced. >> this is actually the item of property that saved her life. >> remember when leslie left the house and she put on a winter scarf? miraculously, that scarf saved her. mcguff's knife didn't pierce the thick material. >> so if i didn't have that on, i really wouldn't be here today. craig would have watched me die in front of him. >> turns out the car mcgoff turned into a tank had been

stolen earlier that day, and looking inside, cops make a disturbing discovery. >> they found a loaded 22 three two liter bottles of gasoline soda bottles in a backpack. they said that he had about 70 bullets in his pocket and a bic lighter. >> cops believe leslie and her boyfriend weren't all he was after. >> our speculation was, well, he had three bottles of gasoline. and there's three ways in and out of leslie's parents house. so, i mean, our speculation was that maybe he was going to torch the house. and as they were running out of the house, shoot them. >> it took a jury less than three hours to find tim mcgoff guilty of 15 counts, including attempted murder, with a judge's sentence of a minimum of 21 years behind bars. >> we got 21 years minimum, which was which was tremendous, and it was certainly brought justice to the family.
