significant transition, and we sincerely thank him for his unwavering commitment to the team. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. >> hello again. >> i'm christien kafton and i'm jana katsuyama. let's get you caught up on some of our top stories tonight. there is a winner in tonight's mega millions drawing. let's see. after three months without a grand prize winner, a winning ticket finally worth $1.22 billion was sold for the drawing in northern california. according to the state lottery website, that ticket was sold at a sunshine, food and gas station in cottonwood, california, which is a census designated place in shasta county with a population of about 6200 people. >> the winning numbers were three, seven, 37, 49, 55, with six as the mega ball number. this is the fifth largest jackpot in mega million history. and caltrans is preparing for

the possibility of more rain this weekend, and that could be trouble for the already saturated north bay. ktvu is joey horta reports from sonoma county, where flooding closed multiple roads throughout the day. >> caltrans is preparing for more rain to soak the north bay after up to three inches fell over parts of sonoma county friday, according to the national weather service. steady runoff forcing several road closures west of 101. >> we had constant for days, and so that's just slowly accumulating. >> california highway patrol stopping multiple drivers from ignoring road closures due to flooding and schellville shutting down highways 12 and 121 in both directions. caltrans is on standby for more rain over already saturated soil. >> we get a lot of runoff, and so a creek like sonoma creek,

be. late november, flooding in guerneville turned deadly along the russian river. if you see flood water in a roadway, you can't tell how deep it is. so turn around, don't drown, and you can call 511 for road conditions before you hit the road. in schellville joey jorda, ktvu, fox two news. >> santa cruz officials say they hope to reopen two of their beaches as soon as tomorrow, after a portion of the wharf collapsed earlier this week, sending tons of debris into the ocean and onto the shore. today, city officials gave an update on the city's damaged wharf. officials there saying that the wharf will not reopen until the city is sure it is safe. meantime, business owners nearby say they're losing money with each passing day. >> our employees are having a hard time. yeah, that's. you know, we're like family. after a while, city officials say upwards of 2 million people visit the wharf each year. >> they are now looking at ways to ease the financial impacts to those businesses and their

staff. >> a marin county school district is paying $17.5 million to settle sex abuse lawsuits filed by four former students. the former students accused tamalpais high school of failing to protect them from their tennis coach, normandie burgos, and ignoring evidence of predatory behavior. burgos was eventually convicted of molestation and sentenced to 255 years behind bars. the new york times reports that tamalpais union high school district mailed out the financial settlements last week. a fifth case, filed by an anonymous plaintiff is set to go to trial in february. we reached out to the attorneys of that plaintiffs, and they sent us a statement that says, in part, quote, mr. burgess was allowed to roam the boys locker room and gym at tamalpais high school for years without any supervision. he used that opportunity and access to harm our client. we are continuing to fight vigorously to bring justice for our client, and commend all others for coming forward.

happening now. the alameda county sheriff's office is asking for the public's help to find a man who has been missing for almost two weeks. authorities are sharing this photo of 47 year old brian melo. his sister says she last saw him on via cordoba in san lorenzo on saturday, december 14th. he was wearing this spider-man hoodie and sweats. melo is described as five foot ten inches tall, about 180 pounds, with hazel eyes and blond hair. you're asked to call the sheriff's office if you have any information. >> new at 11. also in alameda county, the sheriff's office is asking the public for help with a 22 year old cold case. in december 199 thr men were killed in an apartment on oak street near apple avenue in hayward between highway 238 and castro valley's south reservoir. the victims were oscar villapando, who was 2018 year old david villalpando, and 17 year old richard villalpando. witnesses say a young man between the ages of 16 and 18 years old was seen leaving the

scene in a golden or yellow chevy nova. that car was parked in front of the apartments at the time of the murders. the man is described as white or hispanic, about five feet three inches tall, with a medium build and wearing a quote raiders type parka and hat. anyone with information is being asked to call the sheriff's office. >> police in san leandro say thieves rammed a vehicle into another gamestop store today, following a similar crime on christmas eve at a gamestop just three miles away. police say a stolen white infiniti was used to ram through the front of the gamestop on east 14th street around 6:00 this morning. when officers arrived on the scene, they say the suspects had already taken off in a separate vehicle, leaving the white sedan behind. police say that this is an active investigation. on christmas eve, san leandro police chased down two suspects who rammed into the gamestop at fashion fair place on hesperian boulevard. officers arrested one person in that case and are still looking for the other suspect.

>> a call for big changes in oakland when it comes to police pursuits. governor gavin newsom calling out the oakland police commission for not taking urgency on the matter. as ktvu james torres explains, the governor wants the rules against chasing a fleeing criminal to change. >> governor gavin newsom and california highway patrol leaders say their efforts in oakland continue to show results. a holiday blitz from san diego to the bay area led to 117 arrests and $38,000 in stolen merchandise recovered in just the last few weeks. chp says the 480 flock cameras in oakland are a game changer. >> this has allowed us to successfully go after criminals for attempted murder on our freeways. vehicles that pursue from us hit and run stolen vehicles and other felonies. >> both chp and newsom say oakland police need to be able to do the same thing. according to opd's pursuit policy, an officer can only chase a suspect

if they have probable cause that a criminal is suspected of a violent crime. newsom wants to loosen those rules. >> you could be drunk. you can run a red light. you can come close to sideswiping a school bus during the morning hours, right in front of a police officer. and the pursuit policy in oakland says, we can't we cannot pursue that suspect. >> he wrote a letter to all oakland leaders earlier this year. the police commission took up the idea in september, but rejected making any changes to policy. they said chases can lead to dangerous situations, like a case in 2022, where a police chase ended with a suspect crashing their car into a man getting food at a taco truck, killing him. the governor acknowledged the dangers, but said the police commission needs to make a change to instill what he calls common sense sense of urgency. >> now i'm working here on a

>> absolutely. roberta was talking about that earlier, talking about the fact that if you can see the top of the salesforce tower, you can see the top of the golden gate bridge. that means visibility is pretty good. but roberta, rain still on the way? i mean, even though it looks good right now, enjoy it while you can. >> absolutely. we'll take it right. we're going to have a smattering of some precipitation in the overnight hours and also in the north bay. but then the bulk of the storm, the last 1 in 2024, comes in on our sunday morning. so don't cancel your afternoon outdoor activity plans on either day. okay. let's get to it. it's our live weather camera looking out towards the city by the bay. the city of san francisco. and yes, as jenna and kristen were mentioning, we can see it because visibility is good at this hour, even though we do have a cloud deck down to about, let's say 1400 feet, it was lower at 400ft. hey, look at the rainfall amounts. the bulk of this came in the overnight hours and early this morning, anywhere from nearly 7/10 of an inch of rain in san francisco to nearly two full inches in ben

lomond. boy, those are impressive. totals castro valley with over an inch of rain in a short amount of time. we realized high temperatures today all the way up to 67 degrees in morgan hill and in gilroy. and these numbers are good seven degrees above average for this time of the year. a little bit on the muggy side, temperatures now into the 50s. it is in the upper 40s and throughout the tri valley. high surf advisory still in effect until your sunday morning at 4 a.m. the boys have been reporting 13 to 15ft swells offshore, about a mile offshore. we'll continue to lap onshore. please be very mindful of that. a lot of visitors in town do not play or walk near the shoreline there. this is it. this is the area of low pressure that already produced an inch of rain. and throughout the seattle area, it's sneaking that northwestern quadrant of the state of california. but look at the plume of moisture that will continue to train into northern california. let's track it

together with our futurecast. mostly cloudy skies overnight. look at mendocino county into lake county. we've got plentiful rain showers, and then it pretty much wants to stop right there before sunup. tomorrow morning at 724. just a hit and miss. scattered shower. but again, t times tomorrow afternoon. don't cancel your plans. even some hints of sunshine, maybe even a rainbow or two during the afternoon hours. then we fill in with the cloud cover. then we have plentiful rain showers slicing through the bay area on sunday morning, rapidly moving out, and when it moves out that quickly, we will have some sunshine during the afternoon hours and we won't get as much rain because it's moving through so quickly. but we will count on about 4/10 of an inch of rain i. throughout half moon bay. nearly three quarters of an inch of rain in the wettest locations of the north bay, and a quarter of an inch in the eastern portion of our bay area. but those numbers will change as the day progresses. 40s and 50s. overnight lows tonight. 60s across the board. very similar

that fail to comply would be violating federal law, and that means they could be punishable by fines and possibly even prison time. the fda says it's proposing the rule to prevent consumers from being exposed to asbestos, which can affect the lungs and cause certain forms of cancer. >> the oldest living survivor of the 1941 attack on pearl harbor and the last remaining survivor of the uss utah, has died. warren upton died wednesday at a hospital in los gatos. kathleen farley, the california state chair of the sons and daughters of pearl harbor survivors, says he suffered a bout of pneumonia. the utah was moored at pearl harbor when the japanese planes began bombing the hawaiian naval naval base in the early morning hours of december 7th, 1941, propelling the u.s. into world war two. his granddaughter jessica, says going with him to see his ship's remains is one of her fondest memories. >> going over there in 2019, taking him from the airport, you

highway patrol officer was shot, has shot and killed a man in amador county. >> this story begins tonight's west coast rap. the man who died has been identified as 31 year old tyler quentin balazsovits. the chp says that neighbors who live off of this rural stretch of old sacramento road were helping him restart his truck thursday, when his demeanor shifted and he allegedly started to act erratically when they called 911 and a chp officer responded. the man steered his truck into the patrol car, and that is when the officer got out and shot him. >> we recognize that this is a tragic incident that impacts our community. we ask for everyone's patience as we conduct the investigation. >> it is not clear at this point whether balazsovits tried

attacking the chp officer, or how many times the officer fired the weapon. the officer whom chp is not naming at this point was not hurt. a portland woman is recovering tonight after being rescued right out of her burning car. >> police shared body cam video of the incident as officers leapt into action after the flames were extinguished. police successfully rescued the 47 year old driver and performed cpr on her. she was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. and seattle investigators are trying to figure out exactly how a woman got on board a flight to hawaii without a boarding pass. >> police say that she somehow got through the tsa security checkpoint, spent the night in the seatac airport, and then boarded a delta flight to hawaii on christmas eve. the airport says the woman was discovered on the plane before takeoff and then was removed from the flight. this comes just two days after a woman opened the emergency exit and climbed onto the wing of an alaska airlines

caught. >> robert cranston's mother and father live in an independent living community for seniors in santa rosa. in may, a strange text came to his mother's phone. after a few exchanges, an official claiming to be with the department of the treasury told cranston's mother that she and her husband were connected to a crime. they also said if she didn't follow their instructions or if she told anyone what was happening, she and her husband could be arrested. >> they had built a. because of this orchestrated process, they go through the combination of fear and then and trust that they established with her. also, they had her, you know, lock, stock and barrel with the help of the scammers. >> cranston's mother purchased several gold bars worth around $80,000 each at a local shop. rare coins. she then handed them off to a courier. she was told her money was being held for her own protection. >> every one of these companies have, you know, there's fraud alerts and things that if it looks like a fraud, it smells like fraud. it probably is fraud. but yet they don't stop

it. >> cranston's mother finally came clean with her son once her accounts were nearly empty. all in all, the family lost over $600,000 and their financial future. cranston wonders if there was a way for him to have stopped this, although we may never see that money. >> it's highly unlikely we'll ever see any of that money back. the thought was, what can we do to kind of prevent somebody else from being sucked into this? >> the national elder fraud hotline says it's good practice to avoid sharing any personal information with a person who calls you unexpectedly. for now, cranston says he will be playing a bigger role in managing his parents finances in the future, and he encourages others with elderly family to do the same. >> just letting my mother know that she's safe and she's loved and that, you know, there's no reason for her to ever have anything that she can't approach, you know, her family on. >> in santa rosa tory gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> next at 11, a stunning sight in the monterey bay. the dozens of killer whales caught on camera in what the captain

are underway in wharton, new jersey, after a sinkhole engulfed a portion of interstate 80 on thursday. the 40 foot wide hole was reportedly caused by an abandoned mine shaft giving away. no one was hurt, but major delays are ongoing as the highway is being repaired. >> and it was a very busy day off the coast of monterey. the captain of sanctuary cruises in moss landing took this video. he says there were dozens of killer whales today. he estimated there were roughly 80 of these whales in the monterey bay today. the captain tells us these whales are seen in the area once every five years towards the end of orca season. amazing. >> that is an amazing. when you
