overnight after matching all the numbers in the mega millions jackpot. and we'll tell you where the winning ticket was sold. and here's a hint it was in northern california, coming up from ktvu, fox two news. >> this is mornings on two. >> happy holiday weekend everyone. good to have you here on mornings on two i'm frank mallicoat. on what kind of surprised me. a wet start to your saturday. let's get you out of the gate and talk to rosemary. i wasn't expecting all that rain this morning. >> yes, the scattered showers joining us once again, frank. it's a soggy one out there. good morning everyone. here's a look over lake tahoe where the snow levels have been higher in the last 24 to 36 hours. and if you look at the foreground, you don't see any snow. you have to look back towards the higher elevation of those mountains there. so additional wet weather coming to lake tahoe as well. snow a bigger scene coming tomorrow. but this is what we're out. this is what's out there right now. a lot of drizzle

falling below the radar beam here at home. i'll have a better look at what we can expect for today, including an update on the advisory for our coastline, as well as the next bigger storm coming in on sunday in the extended forecast coming up. >> thank you. rosemary, christmas has come and gone, but bay area nonprofits are still working hard to feed families in need during the holiday season one east bay organization is hosting its most important event of the year today. ktvu is amanda quintana joins us live. she's in emeryville to tell us all about it. good morning. >> good morning. well, today is the annual holiday dinner distribution. this is for the emeryville citizens assistance program. so it's a big day for this organization. so we're going to have volunteers here putting together all the meals. and to tell you more about it, i'm joined by natalia. thank you for being here. good morning. good morning. >> how are you? >> good. so tell me a little bit about what goes into this. what's going to be happening

this morning. >> so we're really excited. we're going to have this place will be teeming with with oh my god i just had how many. we'll have probably about 50 people at a time. volunteers. that was the name that i got the word. it's early. i got you okay? yes. i've been here very. i've been here early and been up early. been here last night. so what's exciting about today is we're going to be going out into into the encampments, and we will be feeding encampments in located in emeryville, berkeley and oakland. >> why is it important to go directly to those people? >> well, you know, they don't always have a way to travel to us. and although we are open six days a week, this is ecap. these people really are kind of confined to their areas where they live throughout the bay area. >> and this is not just food because, you know, we're in here and there's a lot of supplies here. we've seen bags of shoes,

clothes, jeans. you spoke about what else are you doing today. >> so the, the main focus is to feed. so we will have prepared for 2500 folks a hot meal, which would be ham, turkey, rice, macaroni and cheese, also desserts and drinks. they'll each get two drinks. nice. >> amazing. well, thank you for letting us come and see this whole process. it's great to see people doing such good work. >> thank you. we appreciate you coming out. thank you so much. >> thank you, thank you. okay. we'll be here throughout the morning kind of showing you the whole process and all of the volunteers doing this. but for now, frank, i will send it back to you at the desk live in emeryville. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, amanda, thank you for that. caltrans is preparing for the possibility of more rain this weekend. and that could be trouble for an already saturated north bay. ktvu is joey horta reports out of sonoma county, where flooding closed multiple

roads on friday. >> caltrans is preparing for more rain to soak the north bay after up to three inches fell over parts of sonoma county friday, according to the national weather service. steady runoff forcing several road closures west of 101 we had constant for days, and so that's just slowly accumulating. california highway patrol stopping multiple drivers from ignoring road closures due to flooding and schellville shutting down highways 12 and 121 in both directions. caltrans is on standby for more rain over already saturated soil. >> we get a lot of runoff, and so a creek like sonoma creek, which is a pretty mild creek except for in the winter. can turn into a torrent and jump its banks and close the road. >> while more rain would be

beneficial, it's keeping maintenance crews on their toes, using plow trucks to push water out of the way, while chp reminds drivers to take it easy. >> reminding drivers this wet, rainy season to slow down, make sure you leave a good safety cushion between you and traffic ahead of you. drive safely. >> tree trimmers are getting ready to cut up what mother nature knocks down. >> all fingers crossed the weather man is wrong. but we're ready to go. >> tree masters founder tad jacobs explains. trees that struggled through the recent drought have a weaker core and gain canopy and weight in the last couple of wet years, making them vulnerable. >> we're real concerned over this weekend with the amount of rain that we got coming in and some potential wind that we could really have a lot of trees toppling over. >> as a reminder of how dangerous excessive rainfall can be. late november, flooding in guerneville turned deadly along the russian river. if you see flood water in a roadway, you can't tell how deep it is. so turn around, don't drown, and you can call 511 for road

conditions before you hit the road in schellville. joey jorda, ktvu, fox two news. >> two popular beaches in santa cruz are scheduled to reopen this morning for the first time since a portion of the city's wharf collapsed into the pacific on monday. 150 foot section of the wharf broke apart, crumbled on monday, sending tons of debris into the ocean and onto the santa cruz shoreline. city leaders say it's too early to tell when the damaged wharf will reopen, after it was hit by some of the area's biggest waves in some 30 years. >> that, combined with the end of the wharf being under construction and really damaged and weakened from previous years storms, that was really the vulnerable point. so what we've seen is the remainder of the wharf, we generally feel very confident that it's strong and stable. >> however, city leaders do stress the wharf will remain shut down until inspectors are absolutely certain that it is safe for the public. meantime, we are now hearing from the two

lifeguards who immediately jumped into action to rescue the people who actually fell off the wharf into the water. lieutenant sam hoffman and isaiah mullen are lifeguards with the santa cruz fire department. they were actually patrolling the waters near the wharf when they heard an ominous creaking sound. >> it was pretty surreal. it was like this island floating just off the end. i looked out myself and lieutenant hoffman could see the wharf collapsing into the ocean. >> we started to head that way. i got my fins on just in case there was somebody in the water. >> well, fortunately, everyone made it to shore safely. more high surf is expected today and throughout the weekend along the northern california coastline. and with that in mind, it's 708. let's say good morning once again to rosemary and get that& forecast. i guess today is the hors d'oeuvre. tomorrow is the main course, right? yes. >> we're going to be just a little soggy this morning, frank. and then i think for most

of the day, kind of like yesterday in and out of clouds, a few sprinkles up possibility, but it shouldn't be a big deal. and here's a beautiful view as we look into the clouds and see the sun already begin to pop up. sun will rise right around 724 this morning, and it is expected to be again. partly sunny, mostly cloudy for most of the day. i'll check in on the high surf advisory that continues until early tomorrow morning. winds. or i should say the swells and wave heights are expected to break right about 20ft into the afternoon. those large breaking waves a little bit better on sunday. and again, the advisory expected to expire at 4 a.m. scattered showers across the bay area at this time, although can't really see it on the radar. more of a drizzle falling below the radar beam. and as we look over towards the lake tahoe area, upper 30s low 40s to start the morning here and it is all about the rain. we're not seeing much snow there today. futurecast here on this as i roll you into

your afternoon and stopping it for you at 10:00. not a lot of blues or greens or anything else to see. so we will call for partly clear skies, as well as just a little bit of drizzle out there today. meanwhile, our temperatures this morning a little bit cooler in most areas, down by four in novato as well as sfo as we are starting in the 50s. 51 in livermore. 54 san francisco. 57 in novato. i'll have a look at the afternoon highs for today. the system expected to bring us more wet weather for tomorrow and what we can expect in the extended forecast, including including new year's eve and new year's day coming up. >> all right. we'll see you in a bit. rosemary. thanks. well, someone in california is having quite the holiday week, i guess after winning the mega millions jackpot. lottery officials say a ticket worth $1.2 billion with a b was sold at a gas station in northern california, ending a three month drought without a grand prize winner. winning numbers were three, seven, 37, 49, 55 and the mega number six, and it was bought in the town of

cottonwood near redding here in northern california. the lucky winner matched all six numbers to find the one in over 302 million odds of winning the big prize. happy holidays indeed. coming up, a suspect fleeing in a stolen van led police on a short pursuit before bailing out on foot. how? antioch pd made sure the escape ended quickly, and a bay area family is reeling after their older loved ones are cheated out of over a half $1 million. how? they say an elaborate texting scheme is to blame. more on that when we ome

program, is delivering over 2000 hot meals to homeless encampments throughout emeryville, oakland and berkeley. the food pantry has served the east bay for over 40 years, providing daily food distribution to more than 10,000 families every month. and oakland a's president dave kaval is resigning. the athletics announced that this morning. yesterday, actually, the kaval is resigning to, quote, pursue new business opportunities in california. he's been president of the a's since 2016, and has been a key part of the push to build a new ballpark for the team. and now the subsequent move to vegas. kaval's last day as president will be next tuesday, december the 31st, governor gavin newsom, announced an oakland press conference that the california highway patrol will continue to surge operations in oakland for another month. the goal is to continue helping to address vehicle and retail thefts as well as violent crime. newsom also strongly advocated for loosening up on police pursuit

policies. this is the second time the governor has called for changes to that policy. an antioch police are posting video of a pursuit of a suspect in a stolen van here. officers spotted the suspect in a white van near the intersection of east 18th street and carvalho road. officers says the driver refused to pull over, hit the gas leading to that short pursuit. it ended when the suspect, as you see, jumped out of the van and tried to escape on foot. officers then ran after that suspect quickly took him into custody. suspect now facing charges of evading arrest and possession of a stolen vehicle. well, prosecutors in san francisco say a suspected shoplifter is the first in the city to face harsher penalties under the state's new tough on crime ballot measure. jason jason barber is accused of stealing more than $460 worth of merchandise from the walgreens store in noe valley on christmas eve. those items include a cold medication and ice cream.

prosecutors say the 29 year old suspect will now be charged under prop 36, which california voters approved last month. that new law increases penalties for repeat shoplifters, as well as other crimes. a family in santa rosa is reeling this morning after relatives lost more than half $1 million to an elaborate fraud scheme. ktvu is tory gaines spoke with the family and has more about the tragic scam. >> it's a story that sounds straight out of a movie. an 84 year old woman received a text message claiming her apple devices had been compromised. several exchanges and several weeks later, she had handed over $600,000 to complete strangers. >> there's a very special place in #### for people like this. there really are. i mean, these are these are really smart. bad, bad people. i hope that they get caught. >> robert cranston's mother and father live in an independent living community for seniors in

santa rosa. in may, a strange text came to his mother's phone. after a few exchanges, an official claiming to be with the department of the treasury told cranston's mother that she and her husband were connected to a crime. they also said if she didn't follow their instructions or if she told anyone what was happening, she and her husband could be arrested. >> they had built a because of this orchestrated process. they go through the combination of fear and then and trust that they established with her. also, they had her, you know, lock, stock and barrel with the help of the scammers. >> cranston's mother purchased several gold bars worth around $80,000 each at a local shop. rare coins. she then handed them off to a courier. she was told her money was being held for her own protection. >> every one of these companies have, you know, there's fraud alerts and things that if it looks like a fraud, it smells like fraud. it probably is fraud. but yet they don't stop it. >> cranston's mother finally came clean with her son once her accounts were nearly empty. all in all, the family lost over

$600,000 and their financial future. cranston wonders if there was a way for him to have stopped this, although we may never see that money. >> it's highly unlikely we'll ever see any of that money back. the thought was, what can we do to kind of prevent somebody else from being sucked into this? >> the national elder fraud hotline says it's good practice to avoid sharing any personal information with a person who calls you unexpectedly. for now, cranston says he will be playing a bigger role in managing his parents finances in the future, and he encourages others with elderly family to do the same. >> just letting my mother know that she's safe and she's loved and that, you know, there's no reason for her to ever have anything that she can't approach, you know, her family on. >> in santa rosa tory gaines, ktvu, fox two news severe storms across the country could trigger delays for travelers all across the nation. >> here in the bay area, our three major airports saw hundreds of delays and cancellations yesterday. at last check today, flightaware reports

59 delays at sfo. as you can see it this morning, three cancellations there. thus far. over at the oakland international there are 11 delays. and in san jose, 17 delays. no cancellations so far at either of those airports. nationwide, there are nearly 2800 delays and about 160 cancellations. so certainly call ahead before heading to the airport. anyone planning to spend the new year's holiday on a sierra slope could see an enormous amount of snow, but road conditions getting there and back could be a little dicey the next couple of days. we've got a live look. we're going to take you on highway 80 near soda springs. caltrans officials say they expect to post chain requirements at various times on interstate 80 and highway 50. i just checked, and right now the roads are clear, as you can see. probably a little icy though, so it's a good reminder, as mentioned, to check conditions before you head to the mountains. and by the way, i just looked. truckee is at 38 and so is south lake tahoe. so it's not snowing up there, but

probably raining i guess. right rosemary? >> yes, it's raining frank and turning over to snow. tomorrow there is going to be an advisory for travel if you are going tomorrow. i'll have details on that here in just a moment. good morning all of you. giving you a beautiful view here of the sunrise amongst amongst all the cloud cover that continues to bring us the drizzle this morning. storm tracker two most of the moisture remaining to the north of us. washington, oregon, even northern california. and you can see on the radar there, we've got rain moving over areas of the sierra at this time. a little bit of a ridge here, helping to bump that storm track to the north just enough. we are on the southern edge this morning. we're waking up with a little bit of soggy weather, but for the afternoon, calling for partly sunny conditions, mainly dry conditions may be a lot like what we experienced yesterday. here's a look at lake tahoe where again, just very high elevation snow. you have to get up above seven 8000ft or so

before it does make that transition. the winter weather advisory is for tomorrow. snow expected to return to the lower levels. you can see that shade of purple there below blue canyon over towards the pollock pines. so right around four 5000ft we may see the snow level, but this is going to go from 5 a.m. tomorrow until 8 p.m. tomorrow. that's when the snow is expected to impact travel for the west slope and the lake tahoe area. when it comes to the timing on this, here's a look at today. mostly cloudy, mainly dry. tomorrow morning we wake up with rain already moving through lake county as well as sonoma county by about 7 a.m. assuming this remains on track, doesn't speed up or slow down a fairly quick moving storm through the morning hours the early afternoon. by 1:00 it's already on its way east, and we are drying out for the rest of the day. so right now, looks like sunday afternoon will be a dry one. when it comes

to rainfall amounts anywhere from quarter inch to an inch. a possibility with that system and a half a foot to a foot expected for the high sierra. come sunday, we get past sunday and we are dry heading into the end of december and start of january outside our doors at this hour, in addition to the soggy weather, it's a little breezy out there, especially in our hills. mount saint helena reporting 25mph. temperatures are mild, a low to mid to upper 50s and for the afternoon, widespread 60s. again a near repeat of what we had yesterday. here's a look at your extended forecast. as we do begin to dry out, we are going to turn chilly during the overnight hours. once again. afternoon highs not too bad. dry conditions monday, tuesday and wednesday, which as we know, new year's eve and new year's day. frank. >> thank you. rosemary. a major rift among trump supporters over foreign workers in the u.s. tech industry. we're going to break down the debate between immigration and hardliners and tech giants like elon .

is asking the u.s. supreme court to delay the scheduled ban on tiktok. trump says that delay will give him some time to work out a plan to have the popular social media platform. the supreme court is currently scheduled to take up tiktok's legal challenge to the potential ban in just a couple of weeks. that's ahead of the chinese company's january 19th deadline to divest, or have its app banned here in the u.s, that deadline is just one day before trump is sworn into office for his second term. and two canadian cabinet members wrapped a meeting at mar a lago last night without assurances that president elect trump will back away from his threatened tariffs with canada. many economic experts agree with political leaders in ottawa that these tariffs would crush the canadian economy. >> it would be a recession for

the canadian economy, no question. they rely heavily on the united states for roughly 80% of their exports. those tariffs would really hurt the sales into the u.s. and so they're going to try to avoid that. >> trump says he will impose 25% tariffs on canadian goods if canada does not stem what the president elect calls a flow of drugs and illegal immigration here into the united states. the world's richest man is defending the tech industry's reliance on foreign born engineers, as the incoming trump administration plans to crack down on immigration. elon musk contends there is an urgent need for the skilled worker immigration program that has long been a lifeblood for the silicon valley. but many trump supporters say the h-1b program is taking jobs away from american citizens. some political experts say this could lead to a direct rift between the president elect and mr. musk, who spent millions of dollars on trump's reelection

start to the day with the sun now up and shining sunrise just a few minutes ago. and as we move forward, we will be in and out of the cloudy skies and the sunshine this morning. storm tracker two having a hard time picking up on all that drizzle that's falling over the bay area, most of it below the beam. a soggy start to the day here and in the sierra as well. but notice it's green. not seeing any white. a lot of rain with no advisories today for travel. there is one for tomorrow. here's a look at the afternoon highs expected for today. widespread 60s once again under mostly cloudy skies. i'll have a better look at the current conditions and talk more about that system coming our way tomorrow, and what we can expect in the extended forecast coming up. >> all right. we'll see you in a bit. rosemary. thank you. in emeryville to tell us all about it. good morning. >> good morning. so today is the annual holiday food distribution that happens. so we are watching kind of the process for how this is all organized. so right now we're at the emeryville center for community life. this is where volunteers are going to be getting ready. they've been preparing thousands of hot meals. they'll then be distributed at homeless encampments later this morning. so this group has helped the underserved in the east bay for more than 40 years. the program calls itself the only food pantry in the bay area open for direct food distribution six days a week, and this group serves more than 10,000 families a month. so today they'll be giving out 2500 hot meals, going to directly to encampments that they've scouted here in the bay area. and it's not just food. there's clothes, jeans, shoes that have been collected. i saw that there are some toys that

were just brought in as well. these have been collected over the last few months. they're washed, they're organized. so this is a whole a whole distribution process. it takes so much to put something like this together. so they're going to have between 100 and 150 volunteers throughout the day today coming in here helping warm up the food, get it all served on a hot plate so that when they're brought to the encampments, the people there don't have to, you know, go, go cook it or anything. they just have it right there and they're able to eat a warm, hot meal for the holidays. so we'll continue to show you this whole process throughout the morning. live in emeryville. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you amanda. call for a big changes in the city of oakland when it comes to police pursuits. the governor is calling out the oakland police commission for not taking urgency. ktvu james torres explains the governor wants the rules against chasing a fleeing criminal to change. >> governor gavin newsom and

california highway patrol leaders say their efforts in oakland continue to show results. a holiday blitz from san diego to the bay area led to 117 arrests and $38,000 in stolen merchandise recovered in just the last few weeks. chp says the 480 flock cameras in oakland are a game changer. >> this has allowed us to successfully go after criminals for attempted murder on our freeways. vehicles that pursue from us hit and run stolen vehicles and other felonies. >> both chp and newsom say oakland police need to be able to do the same thing. according to opd's pursuit policy, an officer can only chase a suspect if they have probable cause that a criminal is suspected of a violent crime. newsom wants to loosen those rules. >> you could be drunk. you can run a red light, you can come close to sideswiping a school

bus during the morning hours, right in front of a police officer. and the pursuit policy in oakland says, we can't we cannot pursue that suspect. >> he wrote a letter to all oakland leaders earlier this year. the police commission took up the idea in september, but rejected making any changes to policy. they said chases can lead to dangerous situations, like a case in 2022, where a police chase ended with a suspect crashing their car into a man getting food at a taco truck, killing him. the governor acknowledged the dangers, but said the police commission needs to make a change to instill what he calls common sense. >> sense of urgency. now i'm working here on a holiday weekend to be they can call a special session. >> city council member kevin jenkins says the city administrator is working on a new policy. it's in the works with the police chief. they'll bring it up to the commission, and if it's rejected within 120

days, the council can take it up. >> overwhelmingly, there is support for changing this policy in an urgent manner. >> reporting in oakland i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news and the commission chair said ktvu a statement saying, quote, we have seen the significant and positive impacts that have resulted in oakland's police department's coordination with chp and understand that there is still significant work to be done in regards to opd's pursuit policy and practices. >> happening today, the san francisco police department will have extra officers looking for drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. dui saturation patrol starts at 7 p.m. that will run through the early morning. it's part of the national highway safety regulators. drive sober or get pulled over winter campaign. research shows that crashes involving impaired drivers can be reduced by up to 20%, with well-publicized dui checkpoints

and proactive patrols. a 19 year old man is being accused of making unregistered guns and using social media to sell them. san jose police say lucien cabrera was arrested last week after investigators discovered the account back in october. cabrera would send videos of himself discharging the firearms in public places in east palo alto and san jose to solicit potential buyers. he also allegedly attempted to sell high capacity magazines and other illegal weapons in a number of different states. time now is 737. san jose firefighters are investigating a fire that displaced ten adults and four children. that apartment complex fire happened on gemelli way near capitol square mall yesterday morning. fire department released photos showing close up views of all the damage. two apartment units were engulfed in flames when crews first arrived on the scene. firefighters put the fire out in about an hour, but all

eight units in one building are no longer suitable to live in. >> we went knocking on on the neighbors doors to get them all out, and then it expanded. my friend was on the phone with 911, trying to let them know. >> it's difficult anytime when someone loses their property in their homes with a fire. we're always reminded that thankfully everybody got out alive and that's what's important. but definitely for our firefighters when they are working through buildings and pushing over christmas trees to fight fire and in search of victims. >> everyone inside escaped. nobody was injured. the red cross now providing assistance to those that were displaced from that fire. a chp helicopter rescued a hiker from a cliff on the peninsula. this all happened yesterday afternoon at devil's slide, highway one, south of tom lantos tunnel in san mateo county. pretty dramatic. a social media video posted clips and pictures from the cal fire showing that hiker being airlifted from the edge of the cliff. a into the helicopter.

several other local agencies were involved in the rescue, and fortunately here nobody was injured. all right. live. look outside. let's take you to highway 880 in oakland, where you can see some wet roads out there and a little bit of mist as folks go by the coliseum. that's kind of our soup du jour today, so to speak. let's check in with rosemary now and get your full forecast on a wet start to the holiday weekend. >> good morning frank. happy saturday everybody. i think yesterday and today are going to be very similar. started out yesterday with the soggy conditions. and then we had some dry weather come through. and we had a nice afternoon and evening. here's a look at the bay from the east bay shore, where it's tough to see anything out there at this time. in addition to the wet weather, we can have some fog to deal with this morning. the visibility is not too patchy and dense out there, but if you are getting onto the highways, be prepared. as you know, in addition to the

possibility of standing water along our roadways and our freeways, high surf advisory will expire tomorrow morning at 4 a.m. a look at the breakdown for today as well as tomorrow. you can see improving conditions on sunday. large breaking waves to about 20ft. still expected for today. the wet weather pretty much to the north of us areas over northern california, oregon, washington, the sierra getting some rain, not snow today and there is no advisory for travel. coming back closer to home though, you can see it tough to see what is going on out there. it's falling below the radar beam. it's light, but it's there into the sierra. the rain continuing at this time with temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s over the greater lake tahoe area for us into the afternoon. there's no more rain coming our way, and we do begin to see a few breaks in the clouds. so again, it looks like today is going to be very similar to yesterday. could pick up a few one hundredths of an inch to a quarter of an inch or so over areas of the north bay.

suspected shoplifter out of san francisco is the first to face harsher penalties under california's new tough on crime measure. that would be 29 year old jason barber. he's accused of stealing $460 worth of items, including cold medicine and ice cream, from a walgreens and noe valley on christmas eve. barber will be charged under prop 36. this marks the first use of the new law since voters approved it last month. two popular beaches in santa cruz reopening this morning for the first time after a portion of the city's wharf collapsed earlier this week. 150 foot section crumbled on monday, sending tons of debris into the ocean and onto the santa cruz shoreline. city leaders say it's still unclear when the damaged wharf will reopen after being hit by some of the area's biggest waves in over 30 years. and after three months, there's finally a winner in the mega millions, drawing a winning ticket worth 1.22 billion bucks sold last night. growing up in northern california, according

to the state lottery website, the ticket was sold at a sunshine, food and gas station in cottonwood, california, which is a small town near redding off highway five with a population of about 6200. you can buy the town now. well, next month a neighborhood cafe in pleasant hill will mark 45 years in business. it's a favorite among locals, who say the small spot has quite a history. and as ktvu cristina rendon found out, the owner has a special place in his customers hearts. >> reporter. nestled off oak park boulevard in pleasant hill, i get a california benedict every sunday. sunshine cafe is filled with familiar faces and the aroma of an american diner. >> i eat breakfast here every morning. >> compared to other places, the food just comes out just right. >> we come because the food is delicious. >> it's been serving up only breakfast and lunch for decades.

rendon, ktvu, fox two news. >> i will have to check that out. it sounds great. okay, it is now 749. a pedestrian hit and killed by a car along the upper great highway in san francisco. this happened about 545 yesterday morning. officers say the woman sustained life threatening injuries from the collision. she was taken to the hospital, where she later died. the driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. officials say this is the 24th traffic related pedestrian death of the year in the city, the most since 2014. a missing dog found her way back home the day before christmas. after disappearing for more than a week. four year old german shepherd got loose last weekend. family says the florida community stepped in to help search for her. neighbors went through hours of doorbell cam video to look for any clues as to where that dog may have gone. so in the middle of the night,

your loss for the world of sports broadcasting, legendary sportscaster greg gumbel has died. gumbel has called nfl games and hosted march madness at cbs for decades. he was march madness for many. back in march, though, gumbel missed his first ncaa basketball tournament since 1997. his family released a statement saying gumbel died from cancer this week. they say he leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication. greg gumbel dead at the age of 78 on a basketball. the warriors were out of the gate. you may recall a 12 and three, but since then have lost 12 of their last 15 games. and that includes golden state's 102 92 loss to the la clippers in inglewood last night. steph curry draymond green sat out the entire game, all due to injury, and jonathan kuminga stepped up in a big way. he had a career high 34 points in that dubs loss. coach steve kerr says the

then be distributed at homeless encampments later this morning. so this group has helped underserved in the bay area for more than 40 years. they serve more than 10,000 families a month. and today they'll be giving out 2500 hot meals going directly to the homeless encampments that they've been scouting out here in the east bay. >> they love to see us coming every year. for those who have been encampments for quite some time, they know about us. so they know. and they're anticipating, actually, as we scouted where the various encampments are because they're moving and moving about now, they are anticipating us. we let them know we're going to be coming out on the 28th. and they're very, very excited to hear that. and actually to see us coming. >> and this is not just food. there's clothes, jeans, shoes that have been collected for the last few months, all washed and

repeat shoplifters, as well as other crimes. and a family in santa rosa is reeling after relatives lost more than a million, half $1 million to an elaborate fraud scheme. ktvu is tory gains, spoke with the family and has more details about the tragic scam. >> it's a story that sounds straight out of a movie. an 84 year old woman received a text message claiming her apple devices had been compromised. several exchanges and several weeks later she had handed over $600,000 to complete strangers. >> there's a very special place in #### for people like this. there really are. i mean, these are these are really smart. bad, bad people. i hope that they get caught. >> robert cranston's mother and father live in an independent living community for seniors in santa rosa. in may, a strange text came to his mother's phone. after a few exchanges, an official claiming to be with the department of the treasury told cranston's mother that she and

her husband were connected to a crime. they also said if she didn't follow their instructions or if she told anyone what was happening, she and her husband could be arrested. >> they had built a because of this orchestrated process. they go through the combination of fear and then and trust that they established with her. also, they had her, you know, lock, stock and barrel with the help of the scammers. >> cranston's mother purchased several gold bars worth around $80,000 each at a local shop. rare coins. she then handed them off to a courier. she was told her money was being held for her own protection. >> every one of these companies have, you know, there's fraud alerts and things that if it looks like a fraud, it smells like fraud. it probably is fraud. but yet they don't stop it. >> cranston's mother finally came clean with her son once her accounts were nearly empty. all in all, the family lost over $600,000 and their financial future. cranston wonders if there was a way for him to have stopped this. >> although we may never see that money. it's highly unlikely

[music] christmas has come and gone, but bay area nonprofits still working hard to feed families in need over the holiday season. one east bay organization is hosting its most important event of the year today. ktvu is amanda quintana was in emeryville earlier this morning where volunteers were getting ready to get it all working. >> today is the annual holiday dinner distribution and volunteers are here. they are getting prepared and ready to give out thousands of meals to homeless encampments. now that meal is going to include turkey, mac and cheese, vegetables, even a dessert that will then go to

homeless encampments later this morning. this group has helped the underserved in the east bay for more than 40 years. the name of this group is emeryville citizens assistance program. they serve more than 10,000 families a month. today, they'll be giving out 2500 hot meals, going directly to those encampments that they've been scouting out here in the east bay. and organizers say it takes a village to pull this all off. >> they love to see us coming every year. for those who have been in encampments for quite some time, they know about us. so they know and they're anticipating, actually, as we scouted where the various encampments are, because they're moving and moving about now, they are anticipating us. we let them know we're going to be coming out on the 28th. and they're very, very excited to hear that and actually to see us coming. >> and it's not just food. there's clothes, jeans, shoes that have been collected for the last few months, washed and

organized. so this morning they will have an assembly line of volunteers working to both prepare the food, heat it all up, make sure it's served onto plates, get it loaded into those caravans that will go out to these encampments. so it's really a great organization putting this on and a lot of hard work going into making sure that people are fed for the holidays in emeryville. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> 832 your time. a call for some big changes in oakland when it comes to police pursuits. the governor calling out the oakland police commission for not taking urgency with the matter. as ktvu james torres explains. governor wants the rules against chasing a fleeing criminal to change. >> governor gavin newsom and california highway patrol leaders say their efforts in oakland continue to show results. a holiday blitz from san diego to the bay area led to 117 arrests and $38,000 in

stolen merchandise recovered in just the last few weeks. chp says the 480 flock cameras in oakland are a game changer. >> this has allowed us to successfully go after criminals for attempted murder on our freeways. vehicles that pursue from us hit and run stolen vehicles and other felonies. >> both chp and newsom say oakland police need to be able to do the same thing. according to opd's pursuit policy, an officer can only chase a suspect if they have probable cause that a criminal is suspected of a violent crime. newsom wants to loosen those rules. >> you could be drunk. you can run a red light. you can come close to sideswiping a school bus during the morning hours, right in front of a police officer. and the pursuit policy in oakland says, we can't we cannot pursue that suspect.

>> he wrote a letter to all oakland leaders earlier this year. the police commission took up the idea in september, but rejected making any changes to policy. they said chases can lead to dangerous situations, like a case in 2022, where a police chase ended with a suspect crashing their car into a man getting food at a taco truck, killing him. the governor acknowledged the dangers, but said the police commission needs to make a change to instill what he calls common sense sense of urgency. >> now i'm working here on a holiday weekend to be they can call a special session, city council member kevin jenkins says the city administrator is working on a new policy. >> it's in the works with the police chief. they'll bring it up to the commission, and if it's rejected within 120 days, the council can take it up. >> overwhelmingly, there is support for changing this policy in an urgent manner. >> reporting in oakland i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two

news. >> the commission chair said ktvu a statement saying, quote, we have seen the significant and positive impacts that have resulted in oakland's police department's coordination with chp and understand that there is still significant work to be done in regards to opd's pursuit policy and its practices. happening today, san francisco police department will have extra officers looking for drivers who are impaired with alcohol or drugs. the dui saturation patrol starts at 7 p.m. tonight and will run through early morning. this is all part of the national highway safety regulators. drive sober or get pulled over winter campaign. research shows that crashes involving impaired drivers can be reduced at up to 20%, with well-publicized dui checkpoints and proactive patrols. a 19 year old man is being accused of making unregistered guns and using social media to sell those guns. san jose police say lucien cabrera, here, was arrested last

week after investigators discovered the account in october. cabrera would send videos of himself discharging the firearms in public in places like east palo alto and san jose to solicit potential buyers. he also allegedly attempted to sell high capacity magazines and other illegal weapons in several other states. san jose firefighters are investigating a fire that displaced ten adults and four children. that apartment complex fire happened on gemelli way near capitol square mall yesterday morning. fire department released photos showing close up views of all the damage. two apartment units engulfed in flames when crews arrived on the scene. firefighters put the fire out in about an hour, but all eight units and one building are no longer suitable to live in. >> we went knocking on on the neighbors doors to get them all out, and then it expanded. my friend was on the phone with 911

trying to let them know. >> it's difficult anytime when someone loses their property in their homes with a fire. we're always reminded that thankfully, everybody got out alive and that's what's important. but definitely for our firefighters when they are working through buildings and pushing over christmas trees to fight fire and in search of victims. >> everyone inside escaped. no one was injured. the red cross is now providing assistance to those who were displaced in those apartments. chp helicopter rescued a hiker from a cliff on the peninsula. this happened yesterday afternoon. devil's slide, highway one, south of the tunnel in san mateo county. social media video clip and pictures from the cal fire shows the hiker being airlifted from the edge of the cliff up into that helicopter, with the pacific behind him. several other local agencies were involved in the rescue. fortunately, nobody was injured there. all right, let's take you outside. talk a little weather. we're going to get a bird's eye view of the oakland estuary. usually you can see san

approved it last month. two popular beaches in santa cruz reopening this morning for the first time after a portion of the city's wharf collapsed into the water. 150 foot section crumbled on monday, sending tons of debris into the ocean and onto the santa cruz shoreline. city leaders say it was still unclear when the damaged wharf will reopen to the public, after being hit by some of the area's biggest waves in over three decades. and after three months, there's finally a winner in the mega millions, drawing a winning ticket worth 1.22 billion bucks sold for last night's drawing here in northern california. according to the state lottery website, the ticket was sold at sunshine food and gas station in beautiful cottonwood, california. it's a small town near redding with a population of about 6200, including one very wealthy person. well, this is quite a story. a missing dog found her own way home the day before christmas. after

disappearing for more than a week. the four year old german shepherd mix got loose last weekend. the family says the florida community stepped in to search for her. neighbors went through hours of ring doorbell camera video to look for any clues as to where this dog may have gone. and in the middle of the night, on christmas eve morning, the dog alerts announced. she returned by ringing her own doorbell. >> it was about 2:30 a.m. and she came pawing at the door, ringing the doorbell, which was christmas eve. and then that morning i woke up to. she had made it on everybody's camera. she's like, i think this is her. i think this is her. i was like, excited, but trying not to wake up the kids. but the kids woke up anyways from the excitement, i guess. >> so the family noticed that the experience helped their dog find her voice too. they say she's part husky, but she's never had that husky howl until now. and a pretty smart dog took a one week road trip and decided

us for the world of sports broadcasting. legendary sportscaster greg gumbel has died. gumbel has called nfl games for years, hosted march madness at cbs. for decades, he was truly march madness for many. back in march, gumbel missed his first ncaa basketball tournament since 1997. his family released a statement saying gumbel died from cancer. they say he leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication. greg gumbel was 78 years old. well, the warriors were out of the gate, remember, at 12 and three looking great, but since then have lost 12 of their last 15 games. and that includes golden state's 102 92 loss to the la clippers in inglewood last night. both steph curry and draymond green sat out the entire game due to injuries, and jonathan kuminga stepped up to score a career high 34 points in that warrior loss. despite the loss, though, steve kerr
