sierra. just as the tahoe area readies to ring in the new year, this season kind of got off to a slow start. >> but now that it's kind of kicking into high gear, things are finally, you know, getting open 100% like it's time to go skiing. >> a winter weather advisory goes into effect in just a few hours from now, for much of the day in the sierra tomorrow. good evening, i'm allie rasmus. let's take a live look at the conditions on the road. if you are headed up to tahoe, this is what it looks like right now along interstate 80 near soda springs, just north of lake tahoe. the roads look pretty clear right now, but the national weather service says a winter weather advisory will go into effect 5:00 tomorrow morning. it may be an inconvenience for drivers, but it's a gift for skiers and snowboarders. ktvu zac sos now joins us in studio. and, zach, you talked to some of those skiers and the resorts about how they're preparing for the storm and the new year holiday. >> yeah. and, you know, some of them heading up early if you've driven into tahoe over the passes, with the snow coming down, you know, it can be hairy

at times. caltrans urging drivers to be ready as excitement builds at those ski areas for that incoming snow. some skiers opting to hit those roads early with a winter weather advisory scheduled for the sierra sunday, bringing with it snow and wind. >> the race to beat the storm is on right now. >> we're getting on the road. >> chris and family headed for palisades tahoe after picking up some gear at california ski company in berkeley. >> we just go up and ski a couple days and celebrate new year's up at the mountain. >> crews gearing up for the incoming snow and crowds. >> really stoked for this. i mean, we're probably going to get about nine inches of new snow on our upper mountain. >> add to that the foot the mountain received on friday. >> we're looking pretty good snow wise. >> heavenly mountain resort also picking up 11in over the week. the steady stream of holiday visitors expected to arrive ahead of new year's and with winter weather in the mix,

prompting ski areas to put out the reminders. >> we definitely encourage folks to carpool as much as possible and definitely check out that that caltrans app. before you do, head up the hill. >> the california office of emergency services also urging travelers to be prepared. >> make an emergency kit for your vehicle when traveling, and bring chains for your tires to back at the ski shop. >> manager greg winkles finally able to come up for air after an early rush. >> we had some people come in this morning looking for like anything last minute, whether it was shoes or gloves or hand warmers, just all the little things they forgot as they were already on the road. >> some customers opting to head up after the weather and feeling a little nervous about all the fresh snow. >> we don't normally like to ski in too much powder. >> falling in the powder before it was just really difficult to get out ski resorts with their groomers already on standby. >> and winkle says rest assured, once you get up there, it will be a good time in the mountains

now that there's some actual snow coming. >> this is when people tend to get excited. more terrains open, the lift lines will be smaller, even though there's more people on the mountain, and everyone will have really good, a really good time and also plenty of entertainment scheduled at area resorts for new years. >> to go with that new snow, palisades will be having fireworks and a glow stick parade, so plenty to look forward to once you get through that snow and all that weather. >> and of course, we can remember many years when there is little to no snow, even in tahoe this time of year. so we'll take anything we can get celebrate when it comes down. yes. thanks, zach. well, we continue to track the weather closer to home here in the bay area. let's give you a live look outside right now on a different section of interstate 80, this one in emeryville. we want to bring in ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo to tell us what we can expect with the forecast. maybe possibly a little break in the rain over the next few days. >> yeah. that's right. finally a break setting up over the next few days. but our last system of 2024 is developing off shore

here. and rainfall amounts you can see ranging between about a 10th of an inch to possibly an inch of rain. winds could be over 30 to 40 miles an hour. and as you heard in the sierra, they have a winter weather advisory in place. so here is the deal here. now this is a warmer system, so snow levels close to 7000ft. as a result. with this system we could be talking about maybe some more rain closer to lake level. but as you go up in elevation it will turn over to some snowfall. so this is a warmer system. a winter weather advisory from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on sunday, and snowfall could be right around 5 to 10in. as things things really develop as we do move into your sunday could be gusty out there as well. in the bay area over the past seven days, rainfall has been adding up. you can see mill valley about 4.5in of rainfall, bonny doon nearly four inches, santa rosa over three inches, san francisco 1.70 and san jose about 2.78. now we do have a flood watch posted for sunday morning up in the north bay. with all that rainfall over the past several days, the north bay once again picking up the most rainfall with this incoming

system. and that will be for tomorrow morning. here's the satellite and the radar, where you can see some rain showers moving into northern california. some light rain this evening up in santa rosa for the most, up toward ukiah and off and on in the napa area. even if you're not in that light rain report, you may have encountered some mist or some drizzle. here's a closer look at the radar. it's fairly quiet right now, but that will be changing overnight, so it's fairly quiet looking above san francisco for tonight. but those rain clouds will move in from the north and then spread to the south. this is sunday morning, 7:00, and the bulk of the rainfall will be moving in tomorrow morning. now into the afternoon hours, some changes and eventually we're talking about some cold air as we do wrap up the year. we'll have more on that with your full update in just a few minutes. >> all right. thanks, mark. well, city in the east bay is now offering a place for people to stock up on a flood prevention essential. oakley has opened a self-service sandbag station at the eisenhower house sanitary district yard. residents can enter the station from either main street or rose avenue, and once there, people can use shovels to scoop up their own sandbags. the station

is open monday through friday from 530 in the morning until 530 at night. well, severe storms across the country caused hundreds of flight delays. here is a live look right now at sfo. we saw a lot of cars earlier today going in and out of the airport. the website flightaware says right now this airport has 241 delays with 12 cancellations. san jose mineta international has 60 delays today. oakland international more than 50 delays and no canceled flights. but one man at sfo told us earlier his only travel problem today was a little bit of turbulence. >> we were on time and the flight landed half an hour early. we had some bumps, but i actually still managed to sleep through most of it. >> and with a chance of rain in the forecast in the bay area through tomorrow, it's recommended you stay up to date on your flights and make sure you're notified of any delays or cancellations. severe weather in other parts of the country turned deadly. several tornadoes touched down in the houston area, killing one person and

injuring four others. the twisters damaged homes and flipped vehicles in their path. crews are out assessing the damage today, and officials say it appears at least six tornadoes touched down in the houston area. the weather system that spawned those tornadoes now moving east into louisiana. in the east bay, first responders rushed several people to the hospital after a multi-car crash involving two bart police cars. the crash happened around 245 this afternoon near the west oakland bart station at seventh and mandela parkway, oakland fire department says bart police were responding to an unknown call when that wreck happened. it involved two bart police vehicles and a medical supply van. four people went to the hospital, including three bart police officers. we don't know how seriously they were injured. witnesses described the scene as chaotic and scary. >> sirens came on and i seen one officer coming from down mandela and the other officer coming from across seventh street. in a split instance, they hit nose to

nose in the intersection. >> oakland police say it's not known if alcohol played a role in this crash. in florida, 15 people were hurt in a crash involving a bright line train. it happened this morning in downtown delray beach when a fire truck with its lights flashing, tried to drive over the tracks of a high speed passenger train. that fire truck waited for another train to pass before driving around the rail crossing and into the path of the train. three firefighters and a dozen passengers were rushed to the hospital and one. south korea at least 85 people were killed when their plane caught fire after its landing gear malfunctioned. south korean officials report that the jeju airlines plane veered off the runway and crashed into a fence. the plane was returning from bangkok. more than 170 people were on board. emergency responders tried to rescue some of the passengers. two people were able to escape, but again, another 85 passengers did not survive. it's been three days

since the deadly azerbaijan plane crash that killed nearly two thirds of the 67 people on board. today, russia's president issued an apology, but some say it didn't go far enough. fox's lucas tomlinson has the latest on the crash. >> on the streets of baku, azerbaijan, mourners holding funeral processions paying their respects for several victims of the christmas day plane crash. in a phone call saturday, russian president vladimir putin apologized to the president of neighboring azerbaijan, acknowledging a role in the plane's downing, saying the quote, tragic incident occurred in russia's airspace and the airliner had repeatedly attempted to land, which at the time was being attacked by ukrainian combat drones. putin added the russian air defense systems had repelled the drone attacks, but stopped short of saying russia was responsible or clarifying if the plane had been hit by a russian air defense system. instead, the kremlin says an investigation is underway and that civilian and

>> n at ten the office oe francisco needs help identifying a woman's body. medical. the medical examiner says the body of a 50 year old woman was found on jones street between turk and eddie, back on december 15th. this is a sketch of the woman. officials say the woman's legs were wrapped in multiple bandages. she was taken to a hospital where she died. the medical examiner's office says it used several methods to try and identify the woman, with no luck. officials say the woman was white, had brown hair and brown eyes, and was four feet, nine inches tall. anyone who thinks they may have known her or know about her, known who she was, should contact the san francio medical examiner's fice in alameda county. the sherf'sffice is asking the publicor help with a 22 year old cold case. in decembeof 1992, three men were killed in an apament on oak street near apple avenue in hayward. that's near highway 238, in castro valley south reservoir. the victims were oscar villalpando, who was 20. 18 year old david villalpando and 17 year old richard villalpando. witnesses

say a young man between 16 and 18 years old at the time was seen leaving the scene in a gold or yellow chevy nova. that car was parked in front of the apartment at the time of the murders. the man, believed to be connected to the truck and the deaths, is described as being about five foot three inches tall with a medium build, and at the time he was wearing a raiders parka and cap. anyone with information should contact alameda county sheriff's office. more megamillions wins in california, where other lucky lottery players purchased their tickets. in addition to the jackpot winner from last night. >> plus things right now. but it feels like since the pandemic, it's always been something small. >> businesses in the bay area are feeling the weight of the latest egg shortage. how a popular east bay donut shop is managing to get by, and a high speed chase in the east bay. we take a look at the vid howing

that's been tough to find in recent weeks. eggs have been in short supply at many stores, in some cases recalled and pulled off shelves because of outbreaks of salmonella and bird flu. ktvu tori gaines shows us how bakers at an oakland donut shop are managing the shortage, as commercial flocks have been impacted nationwide by bird flu. >> suppliers are forced to crack down on the number of eggs they can sell, leaving small businesses like donut savant here in oakland feeling the bite of higher prices. you may have seen it yourself. egg shelves at popular stores. sitting empty. signs at others saying limit one per customer. an outbreak of bird flu has torn through commercial chicken flocks across the united states this year, leaving suppliers stretched and consumers in a bind. some shoppers are thankful they have been able to access eggs at all. >> and they're the jumbos, which i don't know. when you cook, jumbos are a thing. they're a little on the big side for me. bigger is not better in eggs. i'm baking still, so yeah, i would have preferred just medium size, but jumbo is fine. i'm

not. >> no complaints, but egg prices are higher for consumers. the usda says the cost of a dozen eggs in california has increased to $8.97. some small businesses are struggling to make up for the lost supply. >> our products kind of depend on it, so we'll make it happen. >> omar kamal has worked with the donut savant team for eight years, and he says finding eggs has proven challenging recently. but he says the pandemic gave his team plenty of practice at finding items in low supply. >> eggs right now, but it feels like since the pandemic, it's always been something the team has been able to find eggs thus far, but they have to be creative with sourcing and pay higher prices to do it. we're going all over the bay area for ingredients. sometimes if we can't get it in the east bay, we're going to the peninsula sometimes or we're going to san francisco. >> eggs are a necessary ingredient for donuts and donuts haven't pumps out thousands of donuts every day. the egg shortage in the bay area may be around well into 2025, as the culling of commercial flocks left suppliers short on egg producing chickens. but no

matter what 2025 brings. omar says donut savant will be ready to meet the challenge. >> being a small business, you've seen so many disappear and we're we're ahead of it. >> in oakland, tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> discount chain big lots has reached a deal that will keep hundreds of its stores and distribution centers open. the company filed for bankruptcy protection in september, but yesterday the company announced it will be sold to gordon brothers retail partners. it's a firm that specializes in distressed companies. variety wholesalers, a privately owned company, plans on acquiring 2 to 400 big lot stores and two distribution centers. some of the big lots workers would also be able to keep their jobs. someone in california is having quite the holiday week after winning the mega millions jackpot. lottery officials say a ticket worth $1.2 billion was sold at a gas station in northern california, ending a three month drought without a grand prize winner. the winning numbers were three, seven, 37,

49, 55 and six was the mega ball number. the winning ticket was bought in the town of cottonwood, near redding. the lucky winner matched all six numbers, defying the one in over 302 million odds of nabbing the big prize. and there were some smaller winnings to someone at a chevron station in roseville. bought one of the two tickets, matching five of the six numbers. the other ticket to match five numbers was purchased at a market in san bernardino. each of those tickets is worth more than $787,000 for large multi-state lotteries like mega millions, half the money from ticket sales goes to the prize pool. the other half pays for administrative costs, commissions to retailers, and some extra funds for public education, raising supplemental funds for public schools in california is the sole reason the lottery exists. >> yes, we get really excited about high jackpot wins like this historic even for mega millions. but our real pride comes from raising money for public schools.

>> the california lottery says mega millions tickets purchased this year alone raised about 89 million extra dollars for public schools in 2024. >> well, the bay area weather, lots of cloud cover today, maybe a little bit of mist or some drizzle in your neighborhood, or even some light shower activity. but that's some moisture all in advance of our next storm that wants to come on board first thing tomorrow morning. so the rainfall will be adding up, especially up in the north bay. so the expectations here with the range could be about maybe about a 10th of an inch or 0.13, in concord to santa rosa, that 0.68 could easily go up to maybe 0.80. but still, you get the idea. we're not just talking about a few sprinkles, and a lot of this will happen for the morning hours. here's a look at the satellite and the radar. you can see that system out here. what's interesting, you can see that speckled cloud cover out there in the pacific. that is a sign of cool air that's going to drift into northern california and the bay area over the next few days. right now, though, we are watching the rain move into northern california and some

light rain reports up in santa rosa, and that rain will gradually move to the south overnight tonight, setting the stage for a soggy sunday morning. so right now you can either have some mist or some drizzle, or maybe some light shower activity, especially up in the north bay, but there's not a lot of coverage on the radar just yet. here's our live camera looking above san francisco with solid cloud cover and current current temperatures. as we take a look at our camera right now, we'll show you the current temperatures coming up a little bit. but we are talking about overnight lows. pretty mild, but eventually we may be a frost advisory or freeze warning. that could be in a few days, maybe by tuesday morning. heads up though, once again, we've been talking so much about the real dangerous surf out in the pacific today. waves around 15 to 18ft. we're going to trim back on those waves a little bit tomorrow, but still some size out there. and then into monday we'll continue to scale down those wave heights, but that high surf advisory is in place until 4:00 tomorrow morning. overnight temperatures will be in the 50s, rain and maybe some wind, with winds gusting to maybe 30 to 40 miles an hour. so it will be a bit stormy tomorrow

morning. this is 7:00 sunday. you might wake up and think, oh, it's going to be rainy all day long, but that's not going to be the case. look what happens later in the day. still some scattered rain out there, but into the afternoon hours, there's still a chance of some scattered showers throughout the afternoon hours. but we definitely scale back on the rainfall activity throughout the day on sunday, and that will continue into monday. so it looks like the rest of the year 2020 for the last few days could be dry. how long will that last? we'll have more on that wit your full update in a few minutes. >> thank you. mark. oakla police are investigating a deadly shooting. it happened around 945 last night onar avenue, not far fro interstate 580. officers got ahotstter alert about gunfire in tt area, and when they arrived, they found a person who had been shot. that person was taken to the hospital where they later died. anyone with information about what happened is asked to call oakland police. antioch police are posting a video of the pursuit of a criminal suspect in a stolen van. an officer spotted the man in a white van near the intersection of east 18th street and carvalho

road. the officer says the driver refused to pull over and hit the gas, leading to a short pursuit. it ended when the driver jumped out of the van and tried to run away. police caught up with him and arrested him. the suspect now faces charges of evading arrest and possession of a stolen vehicle. a burglary on the peninsula was carried out using devices not yet seen before by area law enforcement. police in hillsboro were called a burglary on orange court ound six friday night. when officers arrived, they discovered the burglars were lo gone. but during their investigation, detectives uncovered signal jammers that ha bee left behind. police say these devices can disrupt wireless communications and turn off securityystems, including hisboro police say thistworks. incide marks the first time they have seen devices like this used to commit a burglary in that town. >> a warning for cat lovers as the bird flu continues to spread and infect more animals. i'll have the details coming up. i'm christina coleman in los

medical association says cats by nature are more likely to be exposed to bird flu than other domesticated animals, and the warning comes as health officials worry about the potential for the bird flu virus to mutate and possibly become more transmissible to humans. fox's christina coleman explains a warning for cat owners about the spread of bird flu from the american veterinary medical association. >> we do have many reports of cats, particularly. there have been some reports of dogs also, but cats, particularly acquiring bird flu predominantly from raw food sources. >> doctor bailey says cats aren't necessarily more susceptible, but they are exposed to higher viral burdens because of where cats typically go, including coming in close contact with infected birds or consuming raw meat from infected poultry. since march, dozens of cats have caught the virus, putting pet owners on high alert. >> i haven't kept up with it too much, but i'm aware that it's

something that is now being found in animals. >> in oregon. a house cat recently died after eating pet food that tested positive for bird flu, prompting the voluntary recall of northwest natural 2 pound feline turkey, raw and frozen pet food. and given that pet food is considered the primary source of infection for cats, owners are advised to keep their cats from drinking unpasteurized dairy products or eating raw meat. it's also advised to keep cats inside or to use a leash. >> if you train them early, you can actually put a harness on them and a lead so that you can keep a close eye on them. in other words, not letting them wander freely in the outdoors because you don't know what they're getting into. >> at least 22 large cats at zoos and animal sanctuaries have died after contracting the bird flu. as for humans, the cdc says the risk to the general public remains low in los angeles. christina coleman, fox news. >> cases of stomach flu are surging in parts of the united states this winter. the cdc

shows there were 91 outbreaks of norovirus reported during the week of december 5th. that's up from 69 outbreaks in the last week of november. numbers from the past few years show a maximum of 65 outbreaks reported during that same first week of december. the food and drug administration wants to require mandatory tests on cosmetics that contain talc. the agency's proposed a rule to establish and require standardized testing methods for talc products. if that rule goes into effect, cosmetic companies that fail to test for asbestos in talc could face fines. the fda says it's concerned about consumers being exposed to asbestos, which can affect the lungs and cause certain types of cancer. a controversial trump appointee sends a message to california leaders to back off when it comes to immigration. the letter stephen miller sent to state and city leaders warning them not to interfere with plans for mass deportations. >> plus, we're working with the speaker's office to, you know, change the way things are done.

and across the country have received notices warning them against interfering with immigration enforcement. stephen miller's nonprofit america legal first sent letters this week to nearly 250 leaders, telling them that people living in the country illegally are subject to removal, and that it would be a crime to conceal, harbor or shield them. stephen miller has been named president elect donald trump's deputy chief of staff for policy. some recipients of these letters include california attorney general rob bonta and los

angeles mayor karen bass. the world's richest man is defending the tech industry's reliance on foreign born engineers, as the incoming trump administration prepares to crack down on immigration. elon musk contends that there is an urgent need for the skilled worker program that has long been a lifeblood for silicon valley businesses. but many trump supporters say the h-1b visa program siphons jobs away from american citizens, and some political experts say this could lead to a rift in the close bond between the president elect and musk. musk, as we know, invested hundreds of millions of dollars in trump's reelection campaign. the vote to decide who will be the next speaker of the house is less than a week away, and it's not a sure bet that the current speaker, mike johnson, will keep his job next month. as fox's madeline rivera explains, some house republicans won't commit to supporting him yet. >> republicans in congress say they will work quickly to implement president elect trump's agenda. but the first order of business for the house when congress convenes january 3rd is electing a speaker. until

then, the house is paralyzed, and house speaker mike johnson looks like he's going to have a tough fight trying to keep the gavel. he needs the backing of 218 members. congress will begin with 219 house republicans and 215 house democrats. that means johnson can only afford one republican defection if all democrats vote against him. one republican congressman thomas massie, has already said he won't be supporting johnson. several other gop members say they're also keeping their options open, including congressman andy harris, scott perry, troy nehls and tim burchett. >> we're working with the speaker's office to, you know, change the way things are done to make sure that we can advance president trump's agenda for the american people. >> johnson drew the ire of the right flank of the house republican conference after last week's funding fight. he relied on democrats to get the final bill across the finish line. still, some republicans say johnson is doing the best he can with a narrow majority. >> we're not cheap. we don't just do as the leader says. we're all, it's like herding cats, but not little house cats, like big lions, you know, on the

serengeti. we all have our say. so mike's got a difficult job, but he's done a great job over the last 15 months. >> considering the situation, president elect trump is said to be frustrated with johnson, but there are concerns that a prolonged fight over the speakership could delay the certification of the electoral college results, which is set for january 6th in washington. mallory rivera, fox news. >> two canadian cabinet members wrapped up a meeting at mar a lago last night without assurances that president elect trump will back away from his threatened tariffs. many economic experts agree with political leaders in ottawa that these tariffs would seriously harm the canadian economy. >> it would be a recession for the canadian economy, no question. they rely heavily on the united states for roughly 80% of their exports. those tariffs would really hurt the sales into the u.s. and so they're going to try to avoid that. >> trump says he wants to impose a 25% tariff on canadian goods. if canada does not stem what the president elect calls the flow of drugs and illegal immigration

from a cliff on the peninsula. it happened yesterday afternoon at devil's slide on highway one, south of tom lantos tunnel in san mateo county. video on social media and pictures from cal fire show the hiker being airlifted from the edge of that cliff into that helicopter. several other local agencies were involved in the rescue. no one was hurt. the san francisco police department has extra officers looking for drivers who may be impaired by alcohol or drugs. the dui saturation patrol started at 7:00 this evening. it will run through early morning hours of tomorrow. it's part of the national highway safety regulators. drive sober or get pulled over winter campaign. research shows that crashes

involving an impaired driver can be cut by up to 20%, with well-publicized dui checkpoints and patrols. a missing dog made it home on christmas eve after she'd been lost for more than a week. the four year old german shepherd got loose last weekend in florida. the family says their neighboring community stepped in to help search for her. neighbors went through hours of their doorbell camera video to look for any clues as to where the dog went in the middle of the night on christmas eve. though the dog found her own way home and rang the doorbell with her paw, it was about 2:30 a.m. and she came pawing at the door, ringing the doorbell, which was christmas eve. >> and then that morning i woke up to. she had made it on everybody's camera. she's like, i think this is her. i think this is her. i was like, excited, but trying not to wake up the kids. but the kids woke up anyways from the excitement. >> and when their dog returned, the family noticed the experience changed her. the dog never used to howl before, but now she's been very vocal,

howling. now that she's finally been reunited with her family. olivia hussey, the actor who started as a teenage juliet in the 1968 film romeo and juliet, has died, her family says. hussey died on friday at her home surrounded by loved ones. she was just 15 when director franco zeffirelli cast her in his adaptation of the william shakespeare tragedy. romeo and juliet won two oscars and she won a golden globe for best new actress for her part as juliet opposite british actor leonard whiting. decades later, the pair brought a lawsuit against paramount pictures over nude scenes in the film that they say they were coerced to perform. the case was dismissed by a los angeles county judge in 2023. she was 73 years old. >> sometimes it's a mental health issue, and i know for my sister it was something that it devolved into. she never thought she'd be there delivering meals to people in need. >> how a bay area nonprofit is

entitled to eat. >> mary maultsby jeffrey has been volunteering with the nonprofit for nearly 20 years, watching the homeless encampments evolve into what they are today. >> we were the first people to feed at wood street. the first person on wood street lived in a doghouse. the second and third people at wood street lived in dog houses. these were truly dog houses, little ones. >> that encampment grew to be oakland's largest, spanning several blocks with hundreds of people. it's those people struggling to find housing that this group is feeding today, more than 100 volunteers are preparing 2500 meals with turkey, ham, mac and cheese, vegetables and even dessert. they'll then distribute them at homeless encampments in oakland, emeryville and berkeley. >> they love to see us coming every year. for those who have been encampments for quite some time, they know about us. so they know and they're anticipating, said the excitement that we see on their faces. it really keeps us moving
