jimmy carter has died. he was 100 years old. hello again. >> i'm allie rasmus, and i'm mike mibach. jimmy carter won the white house in 1976, serving one term. afterwards, carter was known for redefining the phrase life after the presidency. born in plains, georgia, 1924, james earl carter came from humble beginnings, raised by parents who were peanut farmers. he attended the u.s. naval academy and then married rosalynn smith, also from plains, georgia. carter served in the navy for nearly ten years, and after returning home to georgia to run the family business, carter turned to politics. he was elected state senator in 1962 and governor of georgia in 1970. carter went from an unknown national candidate in 1974 to the, becoming the 39th president of the united states after losing a reelection bid for the presidency. carter returned to georgia and turned his efforts to promoting peace around the world. carter was often seen with a hammer in hand, building

homes for those in need as part of the habitat for humanity project all the way into his mid 90s. >> i feel like we always get more out of it than we than we put into it. although we work sometimes very hard and overwork on occasion. >> the former president won the nobel peace prize in 2002. later in life, carter would experience several health problems. in 2015, carter was diagnosed with cancer, at the time, saying he was at ease with whatever comes next. and then in 2019, carter suffered a number of falls, requiring several surgeries. president carter remained very active well into his 90s, teaching sunday school in georgia twice a month and keeping that positive attitude. and then last year, the former president left hospice to be by rosalind's side for the final time, bidding his wife of nearly 80 years farewell at her funeral service. >> president biden reflected on jimmy carter's death this evening. he addressed the nation from the u.s. virgin islands, where mr. biden and his family

are spending the holidays. >> he became president and a beloved statesman all over the world. but to know his core, you need to know he never stopped being a sunday school teacher at that baptist church in plains, georgia, calling president carter a dear friend and a decent man. >> president biden says no matter how successful carter became, he remained humble and never stopped serving others. president elect donald trump also issued a statement on truth social after hearing of president carter's death. it read in part, quote, the challenges jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time in our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all americans. for that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. melania and i are thinking warmly of the carter family and their loved ones during this difficult time. we urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers. end quote. tonight, we now know jimmy carter's state funeral will be held on january 9th at the nation's capitol, where political leaders will come pay tribute to his time in office. >> meantime, right here in the

bay area, community members are remembering carter through his work on a number of environmental initiatives and volunteer work with habitat for humanity. ktvu zac sos joining us tonight here in studio. and, zach, a lot of people remembering not just the presidency but his giving spirit out there. >> yeah. from that work with habitat for humanity to all those environmental causes. we talked about his contributions numerous. one of the people i spoke to, robert coughlin, his work with carter, stretched all the way back to before he was elected to the white house. coughlin calling him a friend and an inspiration. >> decent. smart. honest. >> just some of the words robert coughlin says best reflect the character of the late jimmy carter. >> the two first meeting in 1974, working together on several environmental initiatives in california. >> i always consider it to be one of the highest honors in my life to have been part of his team. >> coughlin, who now lives in san mateo, going on to work in the carter administration as part of the environmental

protection agency. >> carter added a lot, a huge amount to the national parks and the alaska wilderness area, and he was he had a great environmental legacy. he was one of the best environmental presidents we've ever had. >> in 1980, coughlin also helping put together carter's project, the global 2000 report, which warned about the consequences that world population growth, pollution and resource depletion would have on the environment if left unchecked. the pair continuing to stay close after carter left office. >> i always thought that he was the only president that's been able to use the white house as a stepping stone to higher things. >> among the many causes carter championed. affordable housing, perhaps at the top of his list. >> jimmy carter was one of my personal heroes. >> janice jensen, head of habitat for humanity, east bay, silicon valley. >> very early in my career, 20 something, and i was in atlanta for the very first time on a business trip, and i feigned

sickness so i could get over to the carter center. and he asked me, he goes, did your boss catch you? and i said, no. and he laughed and he said, good. so i'm like, i got a thumbs up from president carter for playing hooky. >> now, remembering the many times she met the former president and his wife, rosalynn, over the years, dedicating their time to the nonprofit. >> very high standards. people wanted to build on his house. everybody who volunteered wanted to be on the carter house, and we always used to caution them, are you ready to show up early and work till late? because that's what he'll be doing. >> yeah. a man who definitely left his mark on the world in so many areas, both people i interviewed, adding that while today's news was not unexpected, carter had been, of course, open about his health issues. it's been nonetheless hard to process yet for so many here. carter was just a real hero. >> yeah. time of mourning, but also reflection, remembering and

retelling some of those great, fun stories that we heard there. thank you. >> zach. zach. thank you. former president carter will be buried right alongside his wife, rosalynn, at their longtime home in plains, georgia. the couple was married for 77 years, the longest presidential marriage in u.s. history. throughout his presidency, rosalynn remained her husband's biggest supporter and confidante, and he championed her work as well. after the white house, the couple devoted their lives to service, and in an interview with the associated press three years ago, carter described their marriage as a full partnership and that the secret to a long lasting marriage is to marry the right person. tonight, the u.s. flag has been ordered to fly at half staff to honor carter's life and legacy. it will remain at half staff for the next 30 days at all federal buildings and grounds. this tradition, following the death of a president or former president, means the flag will be at half staff during the presidential inauguration on january 20th. >> leaders across the u.s. have

paid respects to president jimmy carter. the legacy he leaves behind, including right here in the bay area. bay area congresswoman barbara lee posted this photo on social media of herself with both rosalynn and jimmy carter years ago, saying, i'm deeply saddened to hear of the passing of president jimmy carter. he displayed a lifelong commitment to global peace, justice and human rights. he inspired me and countless others. state senator david cortese also shared a statement on behalf of him and his wife. it says, quote, one of our lasting memories is having dinner and a great conversation with president carter at mike and mary ellen fox's home in saratoga. i was fortunate to sit right next to him. our california senate office will continue to support president carter's favorite cause, habitat for humanity. his integrity was always inspiring. rest in peace, president carter. end quote. you can keep track of our coverage of the death of former u.s. president jimmy carter by downloading the fox local app to your phone or smart tv. it's free to download. >> new at 11. officials in san jose have ordered a 12 mile

stretch along coyote creek to be cleared out starting next month. city workers have been counting the number of people who live along the creek to help determine how many need to be placed into shelters. san jose is trying to reduce pollution in the waterways to avoid paying a fine, and mayor matt mehan says roughly 90% of pollution in creeks and rivers is all caused by homeless encampments. >> a gas leak in san leandro forced thousands of people out of their homes this morning. pg and e says the initial call reporting the smell of gas came in around four in the morning. pg and e crews responded within 30 minutes, but they couldn't cap the gas line until 9 a.m, nearly five hours later. during that time, a mandatory evacuation order was in effect for dozens of neighborhoods near washington and lewelling. that's near interstate 880. the fire department gave everyone the all clear to go back home by 10:00 that morning. >> we've learned is it's a six inch gas line that is in the flood control panel of washington and lewelling. the

positive news is because of the rain, where the gas leak is, is actually underwater. so it is fuming from under the water, which has helped us in the amount of evacuation we've had to do. >> the exact cause of the leak is still under investigation. >> tonight, an investigation is underway into multiple robberies at businesses in the city of oakland. at least four spots were hit in a short amount of time early this morning. ktvu is tory gains heard from one of the victims. >> shattered glass and emptied cash registers were a common sight at four oakland gas stations sunday morning. oakland police confirming to ktvu that robbers hit at least four locations across oakland, all before 7 a.m. a gas station on high street, a car wash on broadway, an am pm on shattuck and a shell station on fifth street all had damage. sunday, just before 5 a.m, robbers broke through the front door of this gas station and stole cash from the register and stole cigarettes and attempted to break into this atm. some gas

station clerks in oakland have grown used to the risk of robberies. a cashier we spoke to who asked to remain anonymous for his own safety, says a group of at least eight suspects broke through their front door. >> this time it was another cashier. they tell him, don't do anything. they will kill you. then they came over to the atm. they want to try to break the atm with a big hammer. that fight they tried, they didn't break it. >> the robbers were unable to get cash out of the atm, but damages show just how hard they tried. the suspects made off with $300 and many of the store's cigarettes. the cashier says he was robbed just two weeks ago at this same location. have you seen robberies like this here before? >> yeah, of course. i got a many time here last. two weeks ago. they came with the mike. with the gun. >> the cashier says those robbers put a gun to his head and took his money, too. though it's a scary scenario, he's grateful that opd has been responding to their 911 calls more quickly. >> i see the camera. they came

in 2024, and that means some people are making plans to celebrate, while others take it easy at home. now for anyone planning to go out on new year's eve. law enforcement wants to make sure you ring in the new year safely. some public transportation agencies are offering free rides that night to avoid anyone getting behind the wheel while being under the influence. ktvu is lamonica peters brings us a closer look at when chp will start up its maximum enforcement period, and where you can secure a free ride. >> cheers! with new year's celebrations just two days away. california highway patrol says it will use additional officers to maximize enforcement starting at 6 p.m. on tuesday through new year's day, according to the national safety council, 37% of all deaths involved an alcohol impaired driver in 2022. during

the holiday period. >> when you have all these organizations coming together, both public and private, saying, hey, look, we're willing to do what it takes to help people get home safe. it's definitely something that should be utilized. >> in addition to designating a driver, chp says people can schedule a ride with a rideshare company like uber or lyft. public transportation agencies including vta, caltrain, and muni are also offering free rides starting at 8 p.m. on new year's eve until 5 a.m. on january 1st. samtrans will also offer free rides from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m. at san pedro square in san jose. these friends say they'll probably stay home, but it's good to know that people don't have to drive on new year's eve. >> i do love that they're having transportation available so people don't get duis or pulled over or whatever. super smart. also call an uber if you don't know where public transportation is. super smart to use

everything public transit available. i wish we had more options, but yeah, i think it's a really smart idea because then you don't have to worry about it. >> nsc estimates that 179 people may die in traffic accidents on u.s. roads during the 2025 new years day holiday period. sergeant barkley says people should also be vigilant while driving. >> you can absolutely utilize your phone while you're driving to call 911. if you see somebody that you think is too dangerous to be out on the road. >> bart is also offering extended services on tuesday, but they are not offering free rides now. if you need more information about public transportation on tuesday, just go to ktvu.com and click the link for this story. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> an end of year ritual brought large crowds to the san francisco asian art museum today for the museum's buddhist bell ringing ceremony. two three.

[music] the temple bell used today was made in rural japan back in the year 1532, nearly half a millennia ago. it's one of the rare items the museum brings out from its archives to be used for this yearly event. groups of volunteers were invited to come up and ring the bell for exactly 108 times, symbolically clearing the slate for the new year. >> it's an opportunity. it's open to everybody, and it's a great way to say goodbye to the past and say hello to the optimistic future. >> today was the 39th year the asian art museum in san francisco hosted the event for the community and at the chase center and thrive city hosted a hanukkah celebration today, bringing back their annual wonderland. >> celebration. three, two. >> one. guests also celebrated the festival of lights, festival of lights, wooden menorah, cutout painting and decorating, and writing positive messages on a poster board. city supervisor rafael mandelman and aaron peskin were there to honor local jewish nonprofit founder adam swig, declaring december 29th adam swig day. >> now to our weather. the sierra got some extra snow over the weekend, but also some sleet and rain. it made for some slick driving conditions on the roads. the chp and truckee posted this video on its social media pages, highlighting just how quickly the conditions can change. you can see the snow coming down in the afternoon, causing some spinouts along interstate 80. it led to a long line of traffic this evening, as caltrans crews checked to see if drivers had chains. for some people who didn't have them, they were stuck for several hours as they waited for workers to help them put chains on their tires. >> it's our first time coming up here, and then none of us know how to put the chains on. do your studies learn how to put it on before you come down here,

and then be prepared for anything? >> i brought the ones from my truck onto my girlfriend's friend's car and they don't fit. so. this is what it is. yeah, but we're here. we're making the best of it. >> like how they're taking it in stride there. anyone planning to head up to the sierra or is advised to check the conditions before heading out the door? right now, chain controls are up on all vehicles except for four wheel drives from nyack to hirsch, dale road and truckee in both directions along i-80. there's no chain controls issued yet for highway 50. >> all right, let's bring in bill martin right now. hey, it's been a productive winter season. >> it really has. yeah, i was just putting those chains on. i've done that a lot. but every time your hands just go frozen, there's no. there's special gloves you should use, but nothing works. >> you can cut it can cut your hands up quite a bit, and you got to get it done. >> and everybody's in the car and the heater is on and you're

out there. just get out. yeah, yeah. good memories. okay, so yeah, there was some rain up there. there were some snow up there. it's turned over to freezing now. it's going to be a cold night for us. cold night for them. snow has stopped for the most part around lake tahoe, but the freezes will continue as we have a frost advisory and a freeze warning down here next couple of mornings. maybe wednesday morning too. we might see some kind of frost advisory. these are the highs from today. pretty mild. that was that warm air mass. that's why it was kind of rainy and kind of kind of sleety in lake tahoe the last couple of days. i mean, you get daytime highs like this when it was kind of cloudy today, but it was warm tomorrow. that moist, warm air mass moves out. we get a cooler air mass and with more sunshine, daytime highs are actually going to be lower because the cooler air mass, more typical air mass for this time of year. we just came off the winter solstice. and so the days are getting longer, but the days are about as short as they're going to get right. and so you get long nights and you get things like frost and freeze. and that's the story for

tomorrow morning, tuesday morning, probably wednesday morning as well, i would think with some some form of frost advisory or something. we posted very active pacific, but everything now has a trajectory that's going to go pretty much to the north of us. this is generating a lot of surf out in the pacific. swells are down, but don't let your guard down because the surf is going to pop up. back on wednesday and thursday and friday and 10 to 15, 10 to 18. not giant, not like it was, but it's still very, very large oceans, extremely volatile right now. we talk about it all the time here. and this is the fog forecast for tomorrow morning. that's valley fog. see in the central valley. nasty. and then for us some patchy fog freeze warning frost advisory. that's your day tomorrow. sunny all day but cooler fog comes back tuesday morning. a few clouds come in tuesday afternoon. wednesday this thing gets closer, brings clouds, maybe a sprinkle north of santa rosa at santa rosa. we'll see how that goes. that's wednesday afternoon. so nice week. it's going to be mostly dry this week. more dry than

are spending more than a year in hospice care. former u.s. president jimmy carter has died at the age of 100. carter was the longest living american president, winning the office in the wake of the watergate scandal and vietnam war. as tributes continue to pour in for the former president, people who live in his home state of georgia are remembering one of their own. peachtree city, near carter's hometown of plains, georgia, was a place he visited often, and the people of the city wanted to show their appreciation for carter back in 1995 by giving him a tool belt. >> reporter kim loeffler shows us what the gift meant to the former president. >> peachtree city was a place former president carter visited often. >> came here quite a lot because, of course, we're not that far from plains. and it's, you know, his kids lived here. >> former peachtree city mayor bob lenox says he agreed to be

the grand marshal of the city's 4th of july parade in 1995. city leaders wanted to give president carter a gift to commemorate that day, but they wanted it to be special. that's when they got the idea to give him a tool belt for his work with habitat for humanity. >> i said to him, mr. president, you know, we've gotten you a gift today because every place you go, people give you something for the occasion. so i said, i'm going to tell you that you may not like it, but i think it's really cool. so if you don't like it, i'll be happy to take it. and he looked over at me and said, eat your heart out. >> over the next 24 years, president carter used that tool belt with the peachtree city logo on the sides of 35 projects, building over 4300 homes in 14 countries. >> see it all those years later in the paper and realize that he used it. it was kind of a thrill. >> lenox asked president carter to return the belt when he was no longer using it, so the city could commemorate it in some

way. in 2019, president carter returned the belt along with a personalized note. >> he wore that tool belt out. i mean, it is a mess. you know, i've thought since that it says a lot about jimmy carter, that probably his favorite gift that he ever got was that tool belt, and he wore it out. >> this photo now sits in lenox's office, remembering that day nearly 28 years ago, along with fried peanuts president carter gave him from his hometown. >> i feel bad about it because we are losing something that's really good. the world's not going to be as good a place. >> the little things in life. there you go. >> it's great to hear all those stories about things like gifts like that. that meant something. so we want to thank you for wa hing
