>> killer kangaroos or something, right? >> oh, the kangaroos would punch you out. it's lovely, i love it. it's one of my favorite places on the planet. good morning. everybody. heading out the door this morning. we do still have that frost advisory in place. and this is why. look at the temperatures right now. they don't look awfully bad, but some isolated areas. i'm getting reports of 31 degrees. and keep in mind as you take a look at these temperatures, there's still a lot of ponding on the roadways. so you could experience some areas of black ice, especially around highway 17 and 37, in the north bay. now the winds are up to seven in fairfield. doesn't sound ominous, but that's enough mixing of the air mass to keep those temperatures from getting too far out of hand. currently a wind speed of five in mountain view. so here's the bottom line. it's a mighty cold start and then turning partly sunny for this last day of 2024. we'll have more clouds tonight. so with that blanket of clouds, it won't be as cold for revelers tonight as it was last night. and then your new year's day for
5:02 am
2025. partly cloudy. a pretty nice looking day. i wanted to share this with you. it's our live weather camera and the reason is no fog. the visibility is unlimited at this hour. just a little patchy. stratus around the santa rosa area at eight mile visibility. today's highs pretty similar to yesterday 55 to about 60 degrees in san jose. we'll talk about the hourly forecast for tonight's countdown to 2025. but right now, on this last day of 2024, gives me great pleasure to introduce sal castaneda. >> good morning. morning, roberta. how are you? >> good. great. >> all right. >> actually, wiping the game still out of my eyes. >> yeah, i know, i know. well, you know. hey, they're trying to get a good draft position. that's my story, and i'm sticking to it. let's go out and take a look at the bay bridge. it looks pretty good. no major issues here. looks very nice if you're driving to san francisco. we're not expecting a big commute today. 880 looks good in

[music] and it's going to move slowly across to us. but by the sydney harbor, this is where this is happening. that beautiful celebration here ringing in 2025 and saying goodbye to 2024. man, that is a massive celebration. the other day. i kind of wish i was there like roberta. yeah. all right, so we'll check in around the world throughout mornings on two to see how the rest of the world is celebrating. moving on to this now. it's new year's eve, of course, while it's quiet outside this morning, tonight, partiers are expected to be out celebrating the start of the new year across the bay area, final preps are being made for new year's eve parties. several boats will be sailing tonight carrying diners across san francisco bay. restaurants and bars have stocked up and are

through the christmas in the park event. luckily, no one was hurt. san jose police say they tracked down the driver and arrested him yesterday. >> our time now 505. the man who made national headlines in a 2015 kidnaping case in vallejo, is back in a bay area courtroom, and he's facing charges in two unsolved assault cases dating back 15 years. back in 2015, a vallejo man called police to say his girlfriend had been kidnaped by an intruder. the case took a strange turn when vallejo police accused the woman and her boyfriend of making up the story. days later, the woman turned up alive in southern california. now, matthew mueller was arrested months later. police linked him to a home invasion in dublin. evidence from that case also linked him to the vallejo kidnaping and assault. he's now serving 40 years in federal prison in connection with that case, and now he's being linked to several other unsolved cases. now,
5:07 am
yesterday in san jose, mueller was charged with home invasion and the intention to commit rape connected to two bay area cases dating back 15 years. now, police believe mueller invaded two homes in mountain view and palo alto in 2008 and 2009. the santa clara county district attorney says the two cases are similar to what happened in vallejo. >> both of these cases, the defendant broke into a woman's home, tied them up, bound them, made them drink things to make them intoxicated, and did this for the purpose of raping them. >> now, authorities say advances in dna technology led a criminalist to match the skin cells from a velcro strap used to bind the victim in palo alto to mueller. mueller is now facing charges for the two burglaries if he is convicted in santa clara county, mueller could face life in prison.

disappointing season, niners fans are continuing to show their support for the team, and the players to the faithful are rallying behind cornerback charvarius ward, who lost his one year old daughter earlier this season. ward's daughter died in october after suffering heart complications. one fan started a fundraiser to show support for ward's and his family. ward's daughter was born with down syndrome, so niners fan jessica williams decided to sell $15 customized pins and donate all the proceeds to the national down syndrome society. >> about the year 2000. december 21st i had lost a baby girl myself, so i know what it's like to have to bury your own child. i hate the fact that other parents have to do the same. when i heard about charvarius ward's daughter, it just hit too close to home. >> so far, williams has raised $3,000. the pins are still for sale online. >> how amazing is that? helping out one another like that. good

morning everybody. we do have that frost and freeze warning still in effect until 10:00 this morning. it is mighty cold as you're getting ready to head on out the door. the coldest air is happening not to be in the north bay this morning, but in the eastern portion of our bay area. check out some of these numbers. lafayette at 31 degrees walnut creek. same deal. orinda checking in at 31 degrees. it's freezing in alamo 33 now. and that should be moraga. petaluma is at 34. same in napa and in pittsburg. american canyon is checking in at 34 degrees. so depending on your neighborhood you could have a colder result. it is now 42 degrees in hayward, backing through castro valley and a pair of fours at sfo lower than that in half moon bay and 42 degrees. at this hour in san jose, it's much colder than it was just 24 hours ago. so you need to dress in layers out the door this morning. the wind has been blowing up to seven miles per hour and throughout rio vista and also in the fairfield area. and when that does so, it just mixes up the air mass. so
5:11 am
therefore if the winds were calm, it would be much colder. the winds are pretty flat. however, around the peninsula at this early hour. live weather camera at 510 this morning, official sunrise is at 725 and we will see bright clear skies. just a little bit of fog out towards the santa rosa area. not much stratus at all. temperatures will top off today between 55 and 60 degrees. check this out. we're in between two separate systems here. one to the north, one to the south. so we will see a few of these high, thin cirrus clouds drift through the area. and that's actually a good thing because those clouds serve as a blanket. so it will not be as cold for revelers tonight. partly cloudy, but still chilly. just not as cold tonight. overnight 37 degrees across pine grove and cotati. low 40s. redwood shores and redwood city, 30s and 40s across the board. next time around, the full five day forecast featuring the first few days of 2025 and

here are some of the stories we're following today. new year's eve celebrations around the world have already started, but we are still hours away from the start of those parties here in the bay area. tonight's grand finale will be the big fireworks show above san francisco bay. if you're going out tonight, leave your car home, have a designated driver, or use a rideshare or ride public transportation information from san francisco police about a deadly officer-involved shooting earlier this month. >> police say peter hodge hit two pedestrians and a cyclist with his car on december 19th, hours before the shooting, when police approached the 50 year old. later that night, officers say he pulled out a gun. police then shot him and he died at the hospital. >> well, family and friends still remembering the life and legacy of the late former president jimmy carter. many of the places he used to frequent, they're now seeing more visitors. people are looking to pay their respects. that
5:16 am
includes the church. jimmy carter attended and taught sunday school at the farm he grew up on, and his home in georgia, where he will be laid to rest. he died sunday at the age of 105. >> 15 now, the bay area air quality management district wants people to avoid burning wood and setting off fireworks over the new year's holiday. air quality is expected to be moderate and the management district wants to keep it from getting worse. a spare the air alert has not been issued, but the agency says you should avoid using fireplaces, stoves, outdoor fire pits and setting off fireworks, which can all contribute to air pollution. >> well, the santa cruz county community foundation is activating a disaster fund now. it's where businesses and workers who were affected by last week's wharf collapse. the money raised will go to help business owners and employees who depend on that wharf to make a living, as well as immigrants who were not eligible for unemployment and for low income residents of harbor boats that may have been damaged. donations
5:17 am
will be given out as grants through local nonprofit partners. now the cleanup efforts continue in santa cruz after that wharf collapse, the 150 foot section broke off the wharf last monday. it was battered by 30 foot high waves. the waves also crashed through the santa cruz harbor. damage is estimated at $20 million or even higher. the coast guard auxiliary is helping the harbor patrol assess the damage and clean up things. >> initial estimates are it probably exceeds the 2011 tsunami. the docks are badly damaged. infrastructure is damaged. there are a number of boats that are still on the bottom. some are wedged up under other boats and under the docks. >> now, santa cruz city leaders say it's just too early to know when the damage will be completely cleared, or how soon the damaged wharf might reopen or. >> 517 the man who died last monday after being trapped under storm debris has been identified. now, the santa cruz

5:19 am
still refusing to commit to vote for johnson. >> all right, andre thomas 518. let's talk about whether new year's eve, whether you said it's going to be cold, roberta, but not as cold as you first thought. >> well, yesterday's computer models were suggesting the coldest night of the year, but then we picked up a wind in the overnight hours, and that mixes up the air mass. so fortunately enough, we have not dipped down into the upper 20s. but the coldest temperatures of the morning usually occur right around 5:00 in the morning, so we'll stay on top of those temperatures for you, but it's still freezing in many of our areas. and check out the greater lake tahoe area on the south shore 17 degrees. 23 degrees in truckee at this early hour and no snow in the forecast, in fact, will cloud up on thursday and that will lead to rain showers by friday. meanwhile, take a look at the frost and freeze warning around the bay area. the coldest temperatures so far this morning have not been to the north, but to the east. lafayette, walnut creek and also orinda, all at 31

5:26 am
attorney involvement and claims. >> the insurance information institute says. the uptick in price has also been driven by increases in the cost to repair vehicles because of supply chain issues, higher labor costs and more technology being used in vehicles, making them tougher and costlier to repair. >> well, we're now in the final countdown to the 2025 rose parade in southern california, and that parade gives a big boost to the city of pasadena. >> hundreds of thousands of people, including tourists all over the world, are expected to attend tomorrow's tournament of roses parade festivities and football game. pasadena's mayor says the event has brought in millions to the city's economy every year, going all the way back to the first rose parade back in 1890 and the parade started. >> it started as an economic development tool. you know, pasadena is a small city, but it's a small city that manages to demand a world stage. >> the rose parade begins at 8:00 tomorrow morning. >> always great to see. yeah,
