grieves with you. we're going to stand with you as you mourn and as you heal. >> the president speaking this afternoon from camp david, condemning the attack on people on a busy bourbon street in new orleans in the first few hours of 2025. president biden says the driver of the truck that plowed into a crowd of people was likely inspired by isis. good evening, i'm greg lee. federal authorities believe the driver may have had help and did not act alone. tonight, the fbi has set up a perimeter around a home where the suspect lived in a houston suburb. the road leading to a small mobile home has been blocked off. the suspect is identified as 42 year old shamsuddin baha jabar. he was killed in a shootout with new orleans police following the truck attack early this morning. the attack all started just as partygoers in the french quarter were still celebrating the new year. the deliberate attack shocking people across the country. >> our hearts are with the people of new orleans after the despicable attack that occurred in the early morning hours.

>> president biden, offering his condolences to the victims of the deadly attack in new orleans. a man behind the wheel of a pickup truck plowed into a crowd of people celebrating the new year around 315 in the morning, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens of others. when the truck stopped, the man got out and started shooting at officers who shot and killed him. >> this man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. >> unthinkable. no one, and i mean no one, expects to wake up to new year's this way. >> the fbi, now investigating the violence as an act of terrorism, and does not believe the driver acted alone. the suspect, identified as 42 year old shamsuddin jabar, an american citizen from texas and an army veteran. >> an isis flag was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle, and the fbi is working to determine the subject's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations. >> the fbi said potential explosive devices were found in the truck, and at least one

other device was found in the french quarter. president biden called it a horrific attack and offered condolences to the victims families. >> the mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by isis, expressing a desire to kill, the desire to kill. >> president elect trump reacted on truth social, calling it pure evil. as we begin to learn more about the victims, local, state and federal authorities are vowing a thorough investigation. >> we're leaning in. we will be relentless, and we will do everything that it takes to render real justice. >> this attack leaving many with questions about how a suspect managed to get around security at the packed new year's eve event. ktvu christien kafton is live in san francisco with more on that part of the story. christian. >> yeah, the nation is still reeling from this attack, greg. and at the same time, local law enforcement, law enforcement across the country is already

looking to see what they can learn from these incidents to try to prevent the same thing from happening again. the nation is reeling from the events unfolding in new orleans. stephen goldblatt from mill valley, is in new orleans with his family and spent new year's eve on bourbon street, only to learn hours later how close he and his family were to tragedy. >> we woke up this morning at nine 9:00 and my phone was lit up. a lot of text messages and voicemails and people just checking in to make sure that we were okay. >> the bowl game goldblatt had hoped to go to has now been postponed as the city comes to grips with what happened. he described the mood on the streets of new orleans after the attack. >> it's cautiously optimistic that this is going to be an isolated incident, but i also know that that there's a lot of nervous energy in the air because there's still a number of events and the super bowl is around the corner and there's just a lot of nervous people. >> while the super bowl is set to take place in new orleans on

february 9th, there are numerous high profile events set to take place in san francisco as well in 2025, including the nba all stars game in february, chinese new year celebrations, and union square has said it hopes to host 200 events in 2025. san francisco police sent out a message on x, formerly known as twitter, reading in part quote, our thoughts are with the new orleans police department and the victims of last night's horrific incident on bourbon street. at this time, we are not aware of any credible threats to san francisco. we ask the community to alert the sfpd if they see any potential threats or suspicious activity. if you see something, say something. gavin newsom also discussing the incident on social media. the governor's office saying in part, quote, while there are currently no credible threats directed at california events, cal oes urges all californians to remain vigilant while attending public events today. former fbi agent and security expert rick smith said that every event of this magnitude is mourned, but also taken as an object lesson to inform how best to address threats to so-called soft targets in the future.

>> you can put barriers up to make it more difficult, but that's that's the challenge for everybody. it's a challenge worldwide. it's not just in the united states. >> smith says with a number of high profile events coming to san francisco in the bay area, there will likely be a lot of work going on, coordinating various agencies from the local, state and federal levels and ensuring that communication between those agencies is working as efficiently as possible. san francisco, he says, has strengths and shortcomings when it comes to security. >> think about the city, though. that's good in a way. is that is that there's a lot of events here, a lot of training. the police are accustomed to big events, and they're they have the right training. and they have the experience. but that's as i mentioned, there's no joint terrorism task force here. so that needs to be improved and changed and implemented. >> the common thread here is that everyone needs to be alert

to what's going on around them. in particular if they're attending a large scale event. people have to adhere to the idea of if you see something, say something. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> another tragic reminder, christian. thank you. the fbi is also investigating a deadly explosion of a cyber truck in las vegas as potential terrorism. it happened in front of the trump international hotel. one person inside the truck was killed. several people standing nearby were injured. investigators say the explosion was from very large fireworks and gasoline and fuel canisters packed in the back of the cyber truck. it was rented in colorado and driven up and down las vegas boulevard. the trump hotel is just off the vegas strip. looks like we don't have that sound for you. we'll try to get that back. president biden spoke about the explosion and about a possible connection with the attack in new orleans. >> law enforcement and the

intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there's any possible connection with the attack in new orleans. thus far, there's nothing to report on that score at this time. >> now, authorities have not released the identity of the driver, and a motive has yet to be established. we spoke with homeland security expert and retired marine corps intelligence officer hal kempfer about how the fbi may approach next steps in investigating the new orleans attack. >> they're also going to be looking to see, was this tied to some sort of international thing? and with that, how if this was coordinated, i should say if at this point with the attack in las vegas, is there a common thread between the two? and if so, is there something else in the works that they need to be aware of? >> kempfer also said the fbi will need to determine if the attack qualifies as international or domestic terrorism, since the suspect is a u.s. citizen. be sure to stay with us for continuing coverage.

we'll have live reports from new orleans a little bit later in this newscast. you can always find more information on the fox local app, which is a free download for your smartphone or smart tv. the new year started out deadly in san francisco. a man was killed at a gas station on the corner of 17th and south van ness. it happened around 1230 this morning. homicide detectives and the san francisco medical examiner were at the scene for hours. the man was shot multiple times. police say they learned the suspect, identified as 29 year old jose rivera flores, had left the scene in an suv. he was located a short time later near bayshore and geneva and taken into custody without incident. detectives have not yet disclosed a motive. oakland police confirmed to ktvu that there were 86 homicides in 2024. that's about 40 fewer than last year, but four homicides in just the last day of 2024 have some people alarmed. as ktvu amanda quintana explains, these incidents come days after city leaders touted a drop in crime.

>> three deadly shootings and one stabbing to welcome the new year in oakland. with three people killed and three others hurt in less than ten hours overnight.he first incident, just before 8:00 last night in a residential neighborhood on 70th avenue. police found one victim with stab wounds. they were pronounced dead at the hospital. 2.5 hours later, police were called to second street in jack london square for a shooting. they found a victim with gunshot wounds. that person was transported to the hospital, but police later learned three other victims took themselves to the hospital and one of them died. police tell us the other three are still being treated at the hospital. there was another shooting on 24th avenue just after three this morning. one victim died at the scene there. this all happened overnight, but there was also a deadly shooting the morning of new year's eve. a man was shot outside his work, a commercial dishwashing supplier on 14th street just before 715.

people in the area heard more than a dozen gunshots. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. although this is a deadly end to 2024, crime in the city of oakland has actually been down over the last year. >> as we approach the end of 2024 that oakland has seen a five year low in both homicides and shootings. these reductions represent a historical decrease of over 30%. >> just two days ago, city leaders touted a safer oakland, saying the city is seeing a 34% decrease in homicides, and they're crediting the ceasefire prevention strategy for a lot of that progress, which identifies people at high risk of being involved in gun violence and offers them services like life coaching, job training and mental health care. staffers contacted more than 200 people. >> ceasefire is the most impactful violence reduction strategy we have ever implemented in this city. >> in oakland, amanda quintana,

new orleans. 15 people have been killed and dozens of others injured after authorities say a man drove a truck through the french quarter. fox's bo petrovich is in new orleans tonight. bo. and what is the mood? >> hi, greg. well, before today, people here were excited to ring in the new year here in new orleans. and then just around 3 a.m. this morning, a man drove a pickupruck through a very busy bourbon street, which is now taped off behind me as that street is now a crime scene. now, i spoke to some people who were out celebrating last night, and they tell me that they are still pretty shaken up by what happened. >> i'm honestly still in shock

just because, you know, if things could have happened a few hours earlier, thank god it didn't. just unfortunate that it happened at all. but we were literally walking here all night and it's just scary. >> we know one of the people killed was a graduate of a louisiana high school. the university of georgia says one of their students were critically injured. law enforcement identified the suspect as shamsuddin jabbar. the fbi says multiple ieds were found in the suspect's truck. an isis flag was also found there as well. police say the suspect shot at officers, injuring two of them. they fired back, killing the suspect. the fbi is asking anyone for help as they believe the suspect did not act alone. the new orleans police chief says the person who committed this attack was, quote, #### bent on creating carnage. >> this is evil. and when we

face evil, we have a choice. we can run in fear, or we can indeed stand in strength in a time of crisis. >> and officials say that tonight's sugar bowl game between university of georgia and notre dame will be pushed back until tomorrow. and now i've been talking to some people here on the streets who were planning to go to that game, and they say they might just skip it altogether because of the events that happened. however, the governor does insist that the superdome is safe in new orleans. >> i'll send it back to you when we can see those flashing lights behind you. obviously, with all those visitors in town, there was already an increased police presence. but with what had happened, what is the police presence like tonight? [music] >> definitely a ton of law enforcement presence. we have been seeing state police come

here. we have also seen fbi agents as well, coming to this area to investigate what happened here. so definitely a very large presence of police here tonight. >> all right. our boeing petrovich in new orleans for us tonight. boeing. thank you. back here at home, a mother is grieving tonight after her son was shot and killed while headed to work in oakland on new year's eve. our crime reporter, henry lee has the story. >> yeah, i'm a mom and i'm hurting. but he took everything from my grandbabies. everything. >> leah freeman is in pain after her son, 32 year old willie bernstein, a married father of two young children, was shot and killed outside his place of work in oakland on the morning of new year's eve. >> don't let no other mother feel like her soul is being snatched out of her body. don't let another mother feel how i'm feeling right now. >> it happened as bernstein drove from his richmond home and arrived for work at otto clore,

a cleaning supply company at 14th and poplar in west oakland, at about 7:00 tuesday morning. witnesses told oakland police the shooter approached him with an ar 15 type rifle and shot him dead before leaving in a car. no arrests have been made and police have not discussed a motive. >> and i'm going to say this for the person who did it, you didn't have a reason to do it. >> freeman says she doesn't know why anyone would target her son. >> why when you got so many people out here that do wrong. why take somebody who's doing right? >> she says people were drawn to her son, who was known as mr. man. >> everyone that knew him loved him. he was a light, amazing light. he just was this big ball of energy. >> she says she wants justice for her son and hopes anyone with information will come forward to investigators. >> you didn't make a name, which you actually did. is made his light shine brighter.

>> oakland police are asking anyone with tips or surveillance video in this case to come forward. they say any tip, no matter how small, could lead to a big break in the case in oakland. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> we have some video tonight of the sideshows that took place in the east bay last night. last night, officers rushed to several sideshows. one popped up in vallejo around 2 a.m. at the kentucky and alameda street intersection. another sideshow happened in oakland shortly before three in the morning on macarthur and market street. at one point, a car dangerously spun into the crowd. spectators also shot off fireworks and lit this car on fire. no word on any arrests or injuries tonight. >> hope you had a nice day and you got the day off the weather. not too bad. we had a few light drops out there, but nothing compared to what we've been seeing. we've got more rain in the forecast, but not for tomorrow. tomorrow looks pretty

nice. there could be a sprinkle or something tonight, but again, nothing to change. plans over. this is the radar. so that's where the rain is now. and that's where the rain has been the last month or two. areas in this cape mendocino area are a solid 150% of rainfall average more than that. mount tam is over 170% of water for the last few, certainly for the rainy season. and then if you go south of monterey, it's dry, really dry, and you go south of point conception down into santa barbara and los angeles, it's extremely dry, like 6% of where they should be. so. live camera. this is the south bay kind of looking. i guess you'd be looking out at alviso, maybe a little mountain view off to the kind of. well, at about 11:00 is probably mountain view. this is the forecast for tomorrow morning. this is the model. i just or not tomorrow morning for friday. i just wanted you to see the weather system coming in. this is friday, about 10 a.m. looks like it's going to be wet. it'll be snowy in the mountains. a winter weather advisory will be in effect up there and potentially a winter storm warning. we'll see. this is on friday. tomorrow is not bad.

killed at least 12 people in gaza. medics say that most of the victims were women and children. one strike hit a home and another was at a refugee camp, according to witnesses. this comes as israel and hamas have been negotiating a cease fire that could wind down the war. but both sides are accusing each other of complicating those efforts. the flow of natural gas from russia to europe has been suspended, as ukraine is refusing to renew a deal that

allows russian gas to move through its territory, despite the ongoing war. ukraine had been allowing the transit of russian oil and gas across its territory. the supply has dwindled as europe has switched to other sources of natural gas, but some still fear the decision could trigger a surge in prices and potentially a new energy crisis. families of victims from the deadly plane crash in south korea visited the site of the wreckage on this new year's day. relatives paid their respects to the 179 people who died on the jeju air plane that crashed last sunday. all but two people aboard the boeing 737 800 jet were killed. today, investigators removed the black box recording devices from the plane. the jet landed without its landing gear deployed, causing it to skid and crash into a concrete barrier. safety inspections on all boeing 737/802 have been ordered. up for the official state funeral set for next week. fox news steve harrigan reports from atlanta. >> tributes are still pouring in from across the country and around the world as friends, family and fans celebrate the life of jimmy carter. he passed away on sunday at the age of 100, the longest living former president in american history. and we are learning more about carter's state funeral on january 9th. president biden will deliver the official eulogy, but his former rival, president elect trump, also says he will attend. do you plan to go to president carter's funeral? >> i'll be there. we were invited in the carter family members. >> i'd rather not say. >> carter is being remembered as one of the last truly authentic politicians. he projected moral leadership through his faith and felt more approachable than other political leaders, in part because of his love for popular music. >> if you hadn't known he was the governor, if you hadn't known he was the president, that might have been the last thing you would have thought because he was totally unassuming in

15 people were killed in what authorities say was a terror attack on bourbon street in new orleans early this morning. police say a rented truck drove around a police blockade and sped through the streets, striking a crowd of pedestrians. 42 year old shamsudin bahadur jabar was killed in a shootout with new orleans police that injured two officers. guns and pipe bombs were found in the truck. tonight, president biden shed light on a possible motive. >> the fbi also reported to me

that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by isis, expressing a desire to kill. the desire to kill a flag representing the islamic state was found on the truck's tow hitch. >> the fbi is investigating any ties between the suspect and the terror group. you're watching ktvu, fox two news at 630. the fbi is also investigating a deadly explosion of a tesla cybertruck in las vegas as potential terrorism. the blast happened in front of the trump international hotel. this morning. we get more now from reporter adriana shepard from our sister station in las vegas. >> las vegas metro sheriff kevin mcmahill said he's surprised this even happened at all this morning. given the police department's success protecting the city throughout all of the new year's eve celebrations last night. but he said at 840 this morning that 2024 cybertruck pulled in front of the trump hotel. it started smoking and then a loud explosion about 15

to 20s later, the sheriff said the driver was the only person in the car and they died. seven other people were hurt. two were taken to the hospital but have since been released. investigators found fireworks and gas cans inside the truck area. sheriff mcmahill said the cybertruck contained the explosion. >> we do know who rented the truck. we are looking at that individual, but i am not prepared to release the name of any of the individuals that we are looking at, at least until next of kin is notified and we have a 100% identification. >> investigators learned through the city installed license plate readers that the truck got into the las vegas area about an hour before the explosion. it was rented from churro out of colorado. sheriff mcmahill said metro has been talking with tesla and elon musk, who provided video from different charging stations around the country. the fbi is investigating if this was an act of terrorism, but sheriff mcmahill reiterated that they believe that this was an isolated incident and there is

no further threat to the community in las vegas. adriana shepard ktvu, fox two. >> back to new orleans. the sugar bowl was slated to take place there tonight at the superdome, just blocks away from the crime scene in the french quarter. now, the game between georgia and notre dame has been postponed until tomorrow. sugar bowl officials say all parties agree that it was the best interest of public safety to push back the game. the super bowl is also set to take place in new orleans at the superdome next month. today, the nfl released a statement offering condolences to the victims and all those affected. the nfl also says it has been working with local, state and federal agencies over the past two years to develop security plans for the big game. coming up, congress convenes. its a big week for a new slate of lawmakers as a new session begins. the important decisions that need to be made. and a quick reminder that you can get ktvu on demand on your smart tv through the fox local app. you can watch live newscasts and see

on friday, the 119th congress will convene with new members being sworn in, including lateefah simon, the newly elected east bay representative, and sam liccardo, who will represent the south bay. republicans will hold a narrow majority of 219 seats in the house. republicans will have a majority in the senate with 53 seats, which is still below the 60 vote threshold needed for most legislation. with a conservative supreme court, a house and senate controlled by republicans, president elect trump returns emboldened to washington, dc. earlier, i spoke to david kuo, senior center fellow at the freeman spogli institute for international studies at stanford, who says the decline and polarization of political parties is having sweeping implications. >> while there's a long history

here where, you know, democracy requires political parties to operate effectively, parties are really the intermediary organizations that bring citizens interests into the policy workings of government. you know, they link us and our demands into actual governance and political agendas. but for many years now, citizens don't feel as if the parties of the left or the right really represent their interests. instead, they often think that parties are only working for economic elites, for example, or for lobbyists and people who have more time and resources to try to get what they want out of government. and as a result, people feel very disconnected from their political leaders. they don't have necessarily many ways of participating actively within party organizations. >> there's more of our conversation in our full, hour long special on the transition of power pending with the incoming trump administration. if you didn't catch the special, it's on the fox local app, which again, is a free download for your smart tv or phone. as the

battle over who will be the house speaker heats up. fox's doug luzader reports from washington, where 2025 is already off to a dramatic start for both the house and the senate. >> 54321. there you go. >> it was just about a month ago that speaker of the house, mike johnson, was lighting the capitol christmas tree. now, the big question, will he be doing it again in 2025? >> we have a mandate from the american people. mike johnson needs to be reelected as speaker of the house so that we can get to work. >> but some republicans are none too happy with johnson, who himself won the gavel only after a protracted fight that exposed a deep fissure within the gop ranks. president elect trump is clearly pushing to resolve this quickly, and champing at the bit to move forward on a legislative agenda. >> i think there's far less tolerance in our party right now than there was, say, in 2023, with the democratic senate and a democratic president to mess around with the speakership fight. we're burning clock on his first 100 days, as you said.

legislative priorities. we could be getting underway. >> a win, and if that issue gets resolved, you've got the other side of the capitol to contend with. republicans will control the senate. but again, the margin is narrow and there is plenty of work ahead. trump's cabinet picks are hoping to hit the ground running in 2025 to win quick confirmations. some will have bipartisan support, but others may have to survive narrow party line votes among the more controversial. pete hegseth for defense. robert f kennedy jr for health and human services. and kash patel to lead the fbi. >> i think that there are some nominees that are people i think i can work with, but i also am deeply concerned about what i've heard mr. patel say in the past. >> but either way, the landscape here is changing in 2025 from one end of pennsylvania avenue to the other. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. >> cal fire statistics show

earthquake in lake county. the usgs reports a 4.5 magnitude look at this usgs map. noyou injuries from the light shaker. we will continue checking for updates and bring you them throughout the evening. california's first monthly snow pack survey comes out on thursday, and it's likely to be reasonably good for this early part of the rain and snow season. ktvu tom vacar previewed the snow, water, and fire numbers as we cross our fingers for more water and less fire. >> as the new year begins, it's good to take a look back and see what's happened with california's fire and water. essential elements, but also something that can lead to real problems. the golden state has had some big fires last year, but they didn't come in swarms in 2020. for cal fire and the

is to the north of us, and that's where it's been pretty much all winter, right? the heaviest rains have been marin county north, and that's how it continues to be as we go into this next weather system, which is friday. friday will be our next shot at rain. snow in the mountains. live camera shot. beautiful night. nice day to day. pretty much. temperatures today were just in the 50s. temperatures tomorrow are going to end up in the low 60s. so kind of a really tomorrow will be one of the nicer days. and then friday it turns right. be a little bit wet. here's friday morning. this is the forecast. i just pulled it up. so you kind of see what the front looks like. it's not going to overpower us or anything like that. the mountains will get a few inches of snow, rain around here, quarter inch to half inch in some of the heavier locations, maybe an inch in marin county, and some surf starts to show up from these systems out in the pacific. and that's on sunday and monday. so it's kind of nice. we're sort of in a position where the weather's not the lead story. how about that? right now we might see some valley fog this week for sure. maybe see a little frost as we get into the,

you know, parts of this week. we'll see. but other than that we are steady as she goes. here's the model for tomorrow morning, 9 a.m. rain stays north and then it just stays north. now here comes friday. so this is thursday night and this is friday. and it kind of swings in. so friday seven eight 9:00. and it's moving across the whole bay area even into san jose. gets a little bit of rain here but a 10th of an inch if you're lucky. in san jose, continuing the dryness of the southland. and then lake tahoe is going to do well for snowfall. these systems, these types of systems, have a tendency to hang up on the hill. right. and that's what's going to happen friday evening. it clears out. and then you see the valley fog return on saturday morning. but saturday looks like a nice day in the valley. fog in the valley, fog. we'll see you around here too. always an indication of stability right. and that's what we're going to see. so friday is the wet day. saturday. sunday. look money tomorrow looks nice. rainfall. pretty light until you get up here around cape mendocino. you're up into the

two and three and four inch range of water. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. warmer. nicer than it was today. plenty of sunshine, a few clouds, but. but not bad. more sunshine than we've been seeing. friday. there's rain, scattered showers, we'll call it. and then saturday, sunday and monday and the extended kind of shows dry for a while. so we'll see how that works out. >> good weekend ahead. bill. thank you. millions of minimum wage workers will be getting a raise this year. an economic policy institute analysis says 21 states will be increasing minimum wage pay in 2025, affecting about 9.2 million workers. the states raising minimum pay range from $10.55 in montana to $16.66 in washington state. 48 cities and counties will lift pay above their state minimums. the institute says women will make up almost 60% of those getting a minimum wage raise, and more than one fourth of those affected are parents. it's costing commuters a little more money to get around the bay

area this new year. tolls on all seven state owned bridges went up today. it now costs $8 to cross. that's up from $7. the mtc says the higher tolls will help pay for bridge maintenance. the toll hike does not include the golden gate bridge because it's not state owned. its toll was raised in july and now also costs more to ride bart. effective today, the average fare increased by $0.25. bart says the increase is to keep pace with inflation. it's expected to raise about $14 million per year. it will be used to fund train service, better cleaning new fare gates and for adding more police and unarmed safety ambassadors. still ahead, a double overtime thriller in atlanta. arizona state and texas putting on a show in the peach bowl. highlights. next.c]
