surrounding bourbon street are still shut down as the investigation continues. this is a live look at that area. usually busy french quarter quiet tonight. only law enforcement vehicles in view. we begin our team coverage of this tragedy with fox's rebecca castro. live for us in new orleans tonight. >> greg. good evening. almost 24 hours since this attack. it's still an active crime scene here in the french quarter with numerous roads blocked off and a heavy police presence. the fbi says they do not believe the driver acted alone. and they're focused on a range of potential suspects. >> we are committed, no doubt, to uncovering all details surrounding this tragedy. >> new orleans officials pledging justice for the victims of wednesday's fatal truck ramming on bourbon street. a u.s. army veteran with an isis flag on his vehicle swerved around makeshift barriers just hours into the new year. >> a truck hits the corner and

comes barreling through people, throwing people like like a movie scene. like real life throwing people into the air. >> police say the driver shot and killed in a gunfight with police was 42 year old shamsuddin jabbar, a u.s. citizen. investigators finding weapons and potential ieds inside the suspect's vehicle with other potential ieds located in the french quarter. >> we're going to stand with you as you mourn and as you heal. >> in houston, a swat team searched the suspect's home, the fbi saying the incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism. >> and as we know, this is not just an act of terrorism. this is evil. >> authorities are still investigating whether the suspect was a member of isis and are searching for others who may have been involved. >> this is a very fluid, fluid process. and remember something to we're doing two things. we're hunting some bad people down and we're securing the city too. we're getting ready for a sugar bowl tomorrow. >> are you back together? you

will shine. >> and the death toll tonight currently stands at 15. but unfortunately, that number could rise with dozens fighting for their lives at local hospitals. greg. >> rebecca. so much of today has been focused on the suspect and his motivations. but what are we learning tonight about some of the victims in this attack? >> yeah, we are starting to learn about some of the identities of people that were killed. one was an 18 year old girl who dreamt of becoming a nurse, and another one, we're told, is a beloved football alum from princeton university, went to high school here in louisiana. and those are just two of the people that we've heard were killed last night. >> yeah. so heartbreaking. as we learn more details about those lives, rebecca castor live in new orleans for us tonight. rebecca. thank you. the sugar bowl was slated to take place in new orleans tonight at the superdome, just blocks away from the crime scene in the french quarter. now, the game between georgia and notre dame has been postponed until tomorrow. sugar

bowl officials say all parties agreed that it was in the best interest of public safety to push back the game. the super bowl is also set to take place in new orleans at the superdome next month. today, the nfl released a statement offering condolences to the victims and all those affected. the nfl also says it has been working with local, state and federal agencies over the past two years to develop security plans for the big game. california governor gavin newsom urged people to be extra vigilant. today, law enforcement agencies say they have received no credible threats. but the new orleans attack was on the minds of many people who were out celebrating new year's day today. ktvu jana katsuyama continues our team coverage live in san francisco with thoughts from visitors and public safety experts at san francisco's union square new year's day. >> hearts were with the victims of the new orleans french quarter attack. >> my prayers go out to them. you know what i'm saying? my heart is with them. and, you know, it's just like if it was

our own family, right? so you still feel that same kind of sympathy and empathy for those people? >> we were just reading about it, and it's. i mean, i don't see how you can really even stop something like that, but we just got to love on each other. >> a crowd gathered for the final night of the hanukkah menorah, lighting security at the top of many people's minds. >> we've been here eight nights straight every night celebrating, and there hasn't been any obstacles or any incidents. and we're, you know, people feel safe. they feel confident. they feel secure. thanks to the san francisco police department. >> i was a little nervous because of the events that have happened, but we still can't live in fear and we still have to show up. >> one thing about the city, though, that's good in a way, is that is that there's a lot of events here, a lot of training. the police are accustomed to big events. >> san francisco police sent out a message on social media saying in part, our thoughts are with the new orleans police department and the victims of last night's horrific incident on bourbon street. at this time, we are not aware of any credible threats to san francisco. we asked the community to alert the sfpd if they see any potential

threats or suspicious activity. if you see something, say something. governor gavin newsom also said, quote, while there are currently no credible threats directed at california events, cal oes urges all californians to remain vigilant while attending public events. >> today, the northern california regional intelligence center is one of 80 centers around the nation whose sole focus is to try to prevent those threats, try to provide infrastructure with better resources to protect themselves, and working with the whole community, not just law enforcement. >> mike sena is director of the northern california regional intelligence center. sena says working with transportation, mental health professionals and community members is essential. >> our countermeasures hopefully will, you know, keep them from harming the number of people that they'd like to. but it's really too late at that point. working with the public safety, the homeland security, the law enforcement community and the public, we can prevent these types of threats. >> sena says there is an intelligence center in louisiana

called la safe, run by the state police. and he says that the public has a very important role to play in prevention. if you see anything suspicious or if you know anyone who might be a threat, you're asked to call law enforcement agencies. reporting in san francisco jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> the fbi is also investigating a deadly explosion of a cyber truck in las vegas as potential terrorism. it happened in front of the trump international hotel. one person inside the truck was killed and several people standing nearby were injured. investigators say the explosion was from very large. fireworks and gasoline and camp fuel canisters packed in the back of the cyber truck. it was rented in colorado and driven up and down las vegas boulevard. the trump hotel is just off the vegas strip. >> we're able to trace that truck through the tesla charging stations, and it arrived here in las vegas this morning at about 730 and went up and down las

vegas boulevard before immediately pulling into the trump towers. >> president biden spoke about the explosion and about a possible connection with the attack in new orleans, law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there's any possible connection with the attack in new orleans. >> thus far, there's nothing to report on that score at this time. >> authorities have not released the identity of the driver, and a motive has yet to be established. the vehicles used in this case and the attack in new orleans were rented using the same san francisco based car sharing app, turo. tonight, investigators are calling that a coincidence. arturo executive says the company is cooperating with investigators. you can stay updated on developments in these cases online. just log in to the fox local app, which is a free download on your smartphone and tv. new at 11, federal agents say they found 150 homemade

bombs at a home in virginia. the investigation started in 2023, when an informant told authorities that 36 year old brad spafford was stockpiling weapons and ammunition and using pictures of president joe biden for target practice. authorities say it's one of the largest stockpiles of homemade explosives they have ever seized. a defense attorney for the man says there is no evidence he was planning violence, and says his client has no criminal record. oakland police are investigating four homicides that happened between new year's eve and this morning. ktvu joey hoard spoke with neighbors in the jacqueline square area who say they are concerned about their safety. >> an outbreak of deadly violence in oakland to usher in the new year has the community on edge. >> situation is not improved. i plan to move out of this community. >> first, oakland police say a man was shot outside of his work on 14th street just after 7:00 tuesday morning. second, a

deadly stabbing on 70th avenue just before 8:00 tuesday night. in the third case, four people were shot and one died at second and allis streets in jack london square just after 10 p.m. in oakland's 86th homicide of 2024. >> sounded like fireworks. he was like that kind of sound. but then the last three was like pop, pop, pop and didn't sound like the way fireworks go off. >> witnesses say the shooting happened at a party outside block 15, an events venue near the amtrak station. there's a bullet hole in the window of a health care facility across the street, and a shattered window in the building that josh rosen calls home. >> i heard one loud pop, and i thought for a second, that actually sounds like a gunshot, but i just kept watching tv until until we saw the lights. >> the owner of nearby tigers taproom is worried about the safety of his customers, and concerned that crime will hurt

his business. he has a message for city leaders. >> they need to do something fast, to be honest, because right now there's a whole wave of closures. so many other cities are recovering and bouncing back, but oakland is not. >> and in the fourth homicide, another shooting claimed a life on 24th avenue just after 3:00 wednesday morning, and police have not released any details on a motive or suspects in either of the homicides. in oakland. joey jorda, ktvu, fox two news the new year started with a jolt for some peoe in the north bay. >> a 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered near the borr of sonoma and lake counties hit around30 this evening. state senator mike mcguire of healdsburg posted on social medithat it was a, quote, pretty good shaker felt in the north bay. we have no reports at this time of injuries or damage. a fireworks explosion claims three lives in hawaii. that story is next in tonight's west coast rap and honoring the

just before midnight inside the carport of a home near honolulu airport. from this photo, you can see the intensity of the massive explosion. officials said a bundle of fireworks fell over onto its side after it was lit, and set off crates containing other fireworks. first responders said it was one of the worst calls they have ever seen. >> what was significant about this event is there were just so many in the red category. of the 21 patients we transported to hospitals, most of them were considered red or critical. >> authorities are now considering whether to file charges. officials say there were at least four unrelated serious fireworks injuries across honolulu on new year's eve, including one additional death. the use of a drone helped uncover a tunnel at the us-mexico border near arizona. mexican state police found the tunnel in san luis. it has since been closed off. authorities say this was the third drug tunnel

at the age of 100, making him the longest living former president in american history. president biden will deliver the official eulogy on january 9th. president elect trump also says he will attend. carter is being remembered as one of the last truly authentic politicians in the plains and surrounding area. memories are more personal, where many say they had a connection to the former president and his family. >> everybody has a rosalyn carter story or a jimmy carter story kind of personally interacting with with them, and that mes it, you know, so much more impactful. >> after the state funeral, carter will return to plains for a private family burial. new members of congress will be sworn in on friday. the 119th congress will convene with new members being sworn in, including lateefah simon, the newly elected east bay representative, and sam liccardo, who will represent the south bay. republicans will hold a narrow majority of 219 seats

in the house. republicans will have a majority in the senate with 53 seats, which is still below the 60 vote threshold needed for most legislation with a conservative supreme court. a house and senate controlled by republicans. mr. trump returns emboldened to washington, dc. so what does that mean for the state of american politics and democracy? i spoke to david kuo, senior fellow at the freeman spogli institute for international studies at stanford, who says the decline and polarization of political parties is having sweeping implications. >> well, there's a long history here where, you know, democracy requires political parties to operate effectively. parties are really the intermediary organizations that bring citizens interests into the policy workings of government. you know, they link us and our demands into actual governance and political agendas. but for many years now, citizens don't feel as if the parties of the left or the right really represent their interests. instead, they often think that parties are only working for

it's a grind, man. like, you know, new year's eve if you stayed out late. and if you. you know, i just know it is so i hope you're you're coming back around. you got the weekend to recover and get yourself right. because next week you got to go back to work and back to school. so yeah. okay. so outside temperatures tonight not as cold. we've got fog and cloud, some valley fog possible. and there's some higher clouds. so it's not going to be as cold tonight as it was last night. we have that frost advisory, remember. and then this is tomorrow morning. that's our. not tomorrow morning. sorry friday morning. and you see the showers. that's the system we're waiting on. a winter weather advisory will go into effect in the mountains. that's a snapshot at 9 a.m. and then this is about how much rain we'll get out of that. so you can see even santa rosa. just 3/10 of an inch. i think marin county could get a half inch or an inch, but it's a low grade event unless you're up in crescent city, where you're going to see up to three and a half, four inches of rain, which is sort of the way it's been going. it's all it's all most of

the activity has been north of, well, the bay bridge or the golden gate bridge, and it's staying up there. friday's event will be a little rain south, but not much. san jose will get traced to a 10th of an inch. here's the model. we're going to play it out. now, tomorrow morning, you see the fog? a lot of valley fog, right? just patches of it, and then it stays north and then you see it starting to bend. this is the friday event. so tomorrow night fog will probably reform. and then late in the evening and early on friday morning it moves in mountains get a significant amount of some low elevation snow. this is a cooler system so snow levels will probably be around blue canyon i would suspect. so this is a more typical weather system than those are type driven events that we were getting last week. this is exactly what you expect for early january. just kind of a frontal system slides through. snow levels. you know you'll be chaining up at times on 1580. friday is not the day to travel in the mountains. even though it dries up over the bay area, it keeps snowing in the mountains through friday evening. so friday they're going to get some

snow, and then saturday we clear out and a little bit of rain comes to the north but stays to the north. so what's going on? tomorrow is awesome. great day friday great day if you're you know, but it's going to rain and then saturday and sunday awesome days because it's not going to rain. it's gonna be really nice. so friday's are really only inclement day this week. and really for a while, from what i can tell, the long range models are suggesting dry for a bit. i'll see you back here tomorrow night. >> all right, we'll take it, bill. thank you. clinics and hospitals around the country are seeing an increase in upper respiratory illnesses. at first, doctors thought it was just the cold and flu season, but now they think there's more to it. doctors are seeing a rise in the number of flu cases, rsv and pneumonia. the number of norovirus cases has doubled compared to last year's, not last new year's day. researchers believe the surge is linked to the pandemic. >> the viruses are having a heyday. they have people who aren't necessarily primed or even slightly immune to these illnesses anymore, and so they

millions of people ringing in the new year means setting resolutions. and while many have the best intentions, a lot of people may not follow through on their goals. fox's chanley painter spoke with health experts about strategies to stay on track. >> for the new year is a great time for a fresh start, but research finds most people abandon their resolutions by the second friday in january. to help keep your goals from needing an emergency revival, psychologists recommend keeping them small, making them something that would fit into your day to day life so that you have a good chance for success. if you're not sure where to start, consider embarking on new intentions and activities you're familiar with. >> you want to pick something that's close to what you can do.

so if you never have run a mile in your life, you're not going to commit to run a marathon this year. but you may commit to start walking three times a week for 15 minutes, according to new data from the associated press-norc center for public affairs research. >> more than half of u.s. adults say they will make at least one resolution for 2025. the data also found roughly 3 in 10 adults will make resolutions involving exercise or eating healthier to help stay comfy when starting outdoor winter workouts, fitness experts advise dressing for the weather, wearing layers to kind of keep your body warm. >> also, making sure to wear moisture wicking clothing, especially on that first layer. we don't want that, you know, the moisture of our sweat to kind of stick to us because that can accelerate kind of heat loss and make us more susceptible to things like hypothermia. >> meanwhile, when it comes to excitement levels surrounding the new year, researchers say about 4 in 10 adults believe 2025 will be a better year for
