>> unthinkable. [music] no one, and i mean no one, expects to wake up to new year's this way. [music] >> investigators in new orleans are still picking up the pieces following a deadly truck attack in the french quarter. the new details we're learning about the suspect and his motivation behind the violence. we're also hearing from a bay area family in new orleans and on bourbon street just hours before that attack. and it was a violent start to the new year in the east bay. the latest deadly shooting in oakland, capping off a holiday where at least five people were killed. >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> good morning. thank you for waking up with us here on mornings on two. i'm pam cook. >> and good morning i'm dave clark. it is thursday. it's january 2nd. let's go right to steve paulson. he has a forecast waiting for you. >> not bad today. tomorrow we'll get some rain, but we're starting off with a few high clouds. but i think we'll get
7:01 am
some morning sun here and not as cold as the last couple of mornings. but, i mean, there's a few 30s, but there's a lot of 40s. palo alto 39. after that, it's all 40s on the temp. so morning sun and high clouds will continue to drift across throughout the day. then we'll cloud it up tonight. rain is on the way, but not until early tomorrow morning. and it looks again like marin county north. your thursday thoughts though, except for a chilly cool. or maybe you think it's cold morning, but we were colder a couple of days ago. we'll have morning sun and increasing clouds. highs today. 60s low to mid, maybe warmer in the santa clara valley. all right. sal is here 7:00. and we are looking at a nice commute all over the bay area. >> but people who do have to go to work, the vacation is over for some, but not for many, it seems. look at the san mateo and dumbarton bridge commutes. they look very good. and if you're driving on interstate 80, that looks good. we do see more people out there for sure than we saw, for example, on the first or christmas. but right now we still see light commutes.
7:02 am
701 let's get back to the headlines. >> all right. thank you sal. topping our news this morning. authorities investigating the new year's day attack in new orleans do not think he acted alone. and they are searching for whoever may have helped him. >> now, new orleans remains on high alert. today. some restaurants in the french quarter, as well as several government buildings, including city hall, are going to be closed. now, the number of people killed is up to 15. dozens of injured people are still in the hospital. authorities say the suspect, a 42 year old army veteran born here in the u.s, deliberately drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people on bourbon street who were celebrating the new year. and then he started shooting. before the massacre, he posted videos on social media saying he was inspired by isis and had a desire to kill. >> truck hits the corner and comes barreling through people, throwing people like like a movie scene. like real life throwing people into the air. >> there's a fine line between anger and grief, and i'm pretty
7:03 am
much straddling that line right now. >> now authorities found weapons and improvised explosives in that truck, and there are several reports. there's a video of other people planting explosives in the french quarter. >> this is evil. and when we face evil, we have a choice. we can run in fear, or we can indeed stand in strength. >> louisiana's attorney general says one explosive was placed between two law enforcement cars. news outlets there say the fbi has tentatively scheduled a news conference for 9:00 this morning. pacific time to discuss the next steps in their investigation. >> his online history, looking at anybody who's been talking to, obviously, any affiliations with someone who may be deemed a, you know, an extremist or radical in their views. whether he's been off of his social
7:04 am
media presence, if you will, and anything else, he's put out a homeland security expert and retired marine corps intelligence officer told us here at ktvu that the fbi will need to determine if the attack qualifies as international or domestic terrorism, since the suspect was a u.s. citizen. >> he was killed in a shootout with police after crashing into the crowd of people. >> well, earlier today here, on mornings on two, pam talked to a retired fbi agent about the attack in new orleans. he said the tech companies have a responsibility to flag the kind of posts, like the ones the shooter posted before the attack. >> and we know not only from this incident early on, but many mass tragic events, mass shootings, et cetera, that there is some sort of leakage by the attacker, whether it be days leading up to months leading up
7:05 am
to or in this case, minutes and hours before. and i do believe social media very much when they come across something like this, if they believe this is an imminent threat, that it should be passed forward. >> now, the suspect, who was an american citizen and an army veteran, also posted he was inspired by isis, isis, and an isis flag was found attached to the truck used in the attack. >> one bay area family was there in new orleans on bourbon street just before the attack. stephen goldblatt of mill valley was with his family in new orleans to celebrate the new year. they went to the french quarter, but just left just hours before the attack. but he woke up to text messages and voicemails asking if he was okay. >> it's cautiously optimistic that this is going to be an isolated incident, but i also know that that there's a lot of nervous energy in the air because there's still a number of events and the super bowl is around the corner, and there's
7:06 am
just a lot of nervous people. >> last night, goldblatt was hoping to go to the college football playoff game at the sugar bowl in new orleans between georgia and notre dame, but the game was postponed until this afternoon. law enforcement say security will be increased because of the attack. >> our time now 705. the fbi is also investigating a deadly explosion in las vegas of a cybertruck as a possible terror attack. it happened right in front of the trump international hotel on new year's morning. one person inside that truck was killed in the explosion. several people standing nearby were hurt. investigators say the explosion came from large fireworks, gasoline and fuel canisters that were packed in the back of that rented cybertruck. before the explosion, surveillance cameras showed the car driving up and down las vegas boulevard. >> we were able to trace that truck through the tesla charging stations, and it arrived here in las vegas at about 730 and went
7:07 am
up and down las vegas boulevard before immediately pulling into the trump towers. >> now, president biden, pam talked about the explosion and said the fbi is trying to figure out if there's a connection to the attack in new orleans. >> law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there's any possible connection with the attack in new orleans. thus far, there's nothing to report on that score at this time. >> authorities at this point have not released the name of the driver or a motive in that attack. >> well, there has been another deadly shooting in oakland, capping off a violent start to the year. police say it happened at 530 yesterday evening near 65th avenue. when officers arrived on the scene, they found a person who was shot. the victim was taken to the hospital but did not survive. no word yet on the victim's identity, a motive or any arrests in the shooting. now, this most recent
7:08 am
shooting is part of a violent new year's eve and new year's day in oakland. >> ktvu is andre senior is in the studio with us now to talk more about four other homicides in oakland and why people are so frustrated. >> rough start to the new year, especially after news that crime. homicides were down last year. so let's get right to it here. the back to back violence happening in less than 24 hours. neighbors who've lived in this area for years say they have never encountered this level of violence before. oakland police say a man was shot outside of his workplace on 14th street just after 7:00 tuesday morning, and then a deadly stabbing on 70th avenue happened just before 8:00 tuesday night. about two hours later that same night, four people were shot, killing one at a party on second and alice streets in jack london square. and that marked oakland's 86th homicide of 2024. >> i mean, like fireworks, like that kind of sound. but then the last three was like pop, pop, pop and didn't sound like the way fireworks go off. >> witnesses say the shooting
7:09 am
happened at a party outside block 15, an event venue near the amtrak station. the shooting put bullet holes in a health care facility across the street and in some apartments. >> the situation is not improved. i plan to move out of this community. >> they need to do something fast, to be honest, because right now there's a whole wave of closures. so many other cities are recovering and bouncing back. but oakland is not. >> this comes after police chief floyd mitchell announced a 34% drop in homicides and nonfatal shootings in last year, compared to 2023. now police, they say they do not suspect or have a suspect or motive just yet for any of the homicides. we're also reached out to the mayor's office for comment, but we have not heard back just yet. i'm andre senior, ktvu, fox two news. >> time now is 709, and we really don't have a commute this week. that is typical. some people are going, if you're going, you probably want to see this. look at the bay bridge. it
7:10 am
looks very nice. so if you're going to the city from oakland, it looks very nice. see the traffic is moving along very well, both directions. this is interstate 80. little iris down on that. but other than that it looks pretty good and looks like interstate 880 is also off to a good start. these are the conditions we're seeing even on highway four and 680. in contra costa county. 709 let's go back to the desk. >> all right, sal, thank you. well, a new year's celebration in hawaii goes very wrong. the fireworks explosion that left at least three people dead and a san francisco institution reopened this morning in a new location. >> we take you inside the flower mart for a look at the new pot an
7:13 am
are some of the stories we're following for you this morning? the death toll in that deadly attack in new orleans has gone up to 15 now. the victims include a former princeton university football player. a father of two from louisiana and a student from the university of alabama. the fbi suspects other people may have been involved in that attack in new orleans. federal agents are trying to find everyone who was in contact with the suspect, who was born here in the u.s. and was an army veteran, and he drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people.
7:14 am
well, san francisco police are investigating the city's first homicide of this new year. a man was shot and killed at a gas station at 17th and south van ness just after midnight yesterday. 29 year old jose rivera flores was arrested in connection with it. detectives have not told us about a possible motive. and california's department of water resources will conduct the first snow survey of the season this morning. the effort is to see how much snow and water there is up in the sierra, and there will be several more conducted throughout the year. the experts believe the snowpack is expected to be measured as reasonably good for this early part of the season. that could be good news for the prospect of preventing a drought here in california. >> starting today, a section of san francisco's potrero hill neighborhood might be the sweetest smelling spot in the city. that's because the san

francisco flower market moved from its longtime site to a new home. ktvu amanda quintana live outside inside the new flower mart, which looks amazing. amanda, how does it look in there? >> oh, it looks amazing. it's beautiful. there's just so many colors and it's definitely smells amazing too. it's much better to be inside here. just take a look at all of these flowers. so this is the first day of this new location, which is at 901 16th street here in potrero hill. now, the flower market was at sixth and brannan in soma for nearly 60 years before they moved here. so you're looking at video of that old space. construction delays did push this move back a bit, but today is finally the day when flower sales can begin again after a break during the holidays so they could relocate. but vendors are happy to be in a brand new space, and customers got here early to explore what's new. >> i'm so excited! i've been
7:16 am
waiting the moment that they open. you know, there's a lot of chain, there's a lot of new things, brand new, a lot of things different, you know? and i'm so excited to check it and to see what they have. >> along with the new location, the market also has new management. the sf produce market is the nonprofit in charge. many of the long standing vendors that were at the old location have moved here, but there are also expanded vendor opportunities. so there is some space for some newcomers here in the future. of course, it's day one, so not everybody is totally set up yet, but they expect in the coming weeks to have more product here, way more flowers. they also, when you walk in, the ceilings are very high. it feels very big, but a lot of people are saying it's more compact. it is smaller. but that is a good thing for some of these vendors. they say live in san francisco. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thank you amanda.
7:17 am
speaking of amazing flowers, the tournament of roses parade certainly lived up to its theme best day ever. [music] gorgeous weather there in pasadena. we are waiting for the final count, but the crowd is expected to be bigger than the 2024 parade of 750,000 people lining the streets of pasadena. the parade started with a moment of silence for the new orleans victims, and more than 1000 law enforcement officers were there throughout pasadena to protect people there at the parade, in the parade, and for the rose bowl game. the parade featured nearly 40 floats and of course, many bands as well. >> omg, it's always great. we love the parade. up close and personal is the only way to be. it means the world to me. i remember decorating the floats when i was in high school. passing the high school is where i went. this is where it ended. played basketball. this is just a part of our memory and i love
7:18 am
the rose parade. >> i am with you. i love the rose parade as well. one man from danville attended the parade for the second time in his life. he staked out a prime spot at 1030 tuesday morning, waited nearly an entire day to watch the parade from his vantage point. if you ever. i say this every year, if you have a chance, go down there in person. because if you think it's gorgeous on tv, it is unbelievable in person, the smells and just to go up afterwards and see that up close, that everything is covered with something living. so it's just it's so fun. >> sounds like fun. i've never actually done it. pam i know, right? i got to get that on my list there. thanks pam and dave, good morning to you both. let's go out and take a look at some of these commutes. they're very light to this weekend. that would be very typical as people take time off my 24 cameras out. so i will show you the bay bridge and bay bridge camera looks pretty good. no major
7:19 am
issues here. it's been looking good around the bay area. i think this is going to change on monday. we have been looking at some of these cameras. they're looking pretty good here so don't drive too fast. chp is still out there of course, but just know that this is all going to change. on monday. 718 spring street. back in here. yeah, oh we'll have to go to the. that's on. i think i can hear you now. >> all right. well we can stall for a bit and we'll check in with steve in a little bit. >> i wanted to hear about the perfect we have. >> we have the pets maybe. >> yeah. we'll do it afterwards. >> okay. we stay tuned for that because he has the perfect. okay. all right, all right. it could be a lot harder to buy a drone across the u.s. the new rules being considered by the commerce department and why it all has to do with security concerns. and china.

unless something really turns. and per usual, this will be about san rafael, napa, santa rosa north a little bit less, maybe san francisco, daly city, berkeley north, but south of that far less. it's been this way almost all season long. 40s on most of the temps, a couple of 30s, but mainly 40s on the temps. so mostly sunny in the morning. i think mostly cloudy by the afternoon. this system, though, still has a ways to go. you can see it's far left of your screen there, but amounts are starting to ramp up a little bit. this is a little higher than what we saw earlier, especially san francisco oakland north. but south is just not happening in the mountains. there will be some snow that not today, but this will be tomorrow. looking at 6 to 7in of new snow by saturday should be okay. but friday it's going to be a snow day and a rain day. sweet thursday morning sun and afternoon clouds. we are looking for highs to be in the upper 50s low 60s except santa clara valley, which i think will be even warmer after the rain friday. the weekend looks okay. could get windy early next week. all right, it's time for the perfect pets on the left. that's

[music] that's your perfect pets. you can scan the qr code on the screen to submit your pets, and or follow the link on your screen, and we'll be happy to show, hopefully yours right here on mornings on two. >> nice. always love that. thank you steve. well, starting later this year, if you drive an electric or hybrid car, you can no longer drive solo in the carpool lane. now, some state officials are worried about how that will affect california traffic. the clean air vehicle decal program is set to expire september 30th. governor gavin newsom signed a law to extend it into 2027. however, that still needs federal approval. right now, more than half a million california drivers have that clean air sticker, and caltrans says the bay area has some of

the highest number of decal registrations in the state. one new law in the new year allows for cannabis cafes across california. one has already opened in southern california. the woods, a cannabis cafe in west hollywood, served its first meal and soft beverages yesterday thanks to assembly bill 1775. the new law allows amsterdam style approach to marijuana use. you can order food and nonalcoholic beverages, a pack of pre-rolls or edibles and consume it all on site. >> it's going to be good for the consumer as well, because now they can sit as if they were in starbucks and they can take out their computer and they can do their work on our wi-fi, and they can have a cup of cappuccino and a pastry or a salad. >> i think it's just a step in the right direction, especially towards decriminalizing marijuana federally and hopefully destigmatizing it, especially amongst minority communities, given that we're in west hollywood.
7:26 am
>> opponents of the bill say they're concerned over the public health hazard, and that it could lead to more driving under the influence. there are several weed lounges in the bay area, but none that are yet cannabis cafes. >> well, for the past few years here in california, fire and water were big stories. you have the latest on how we're looking when it comes to the drought and the risk of fire season in 2025. >> plus, one thing about the city, though that's good in a way, is that is that there's a lot of events here, a lot of training. the police are accustomed to big events. >> a warning from authorities here in california to stay alert after that attack in new orleans. the preparation that's going on behind the scenes here in the bay area to make sure we- [music] stay safe.

[music] don't let another mother feel how i'm feeling right now. >> the plea from an oakland mother mourning the death of her son, killed on new year's eve. her calls for justice as the police- [music] continue to search for his killer. >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning to you, and welcome back to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cook. it is thursday, january 2nd. i am back. garcia is out. so don't want you to be late because it's 730. let's check in with steve paulson. a pretty nice day today, but we could get some rain tomorrow. >> looks like we will get some rain tomorrow. but yes, today won't be bad. although we have increasing clouds already. nice sunrise here, but we'll get some morning, sun and afternoon
7:31 am
clouds. the system will arrive late tonight. tomorrow morning. and that may be it for a while. it's kind of the way it's looking here in january. not looking real. promising for rain. unless something turns rapidly here, but increasing clouds throughout the day. if you're in the santa clara valley. i think mid 60s are likely. if you're to the north it will be upper 50s 60s so your thursday thoughts a chilly morning, not as cold as we have been the last couple of mornings. a lot of high clouds coming in. clouds increase later and temperatures above average here 60 to 64. all right. so here i think it's pretty quiet. i didn't see much at the bay bridge. >> yeah. there's not a lot going on. i've been looking around. this is great. and of course, if there was always this way then things would be a lot different around here. but right now, you could see a good commute on interstate 80. driving out to the macarthur maze. no major problems there. we've also been looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. that is light. i've been looking around to see slow traffic. we don't have a lot, so we'll just leave it alone. 731 let's get back to the headlines. >> all right. thank you. sal.

police and the fbi are looking for answers after the deadly new year's attack in new orleans killed 15 people and injured dozens of others. fox's caroline elliott, joining us now live from new orleans. good morning. caroline. tell us what the scene is like this morning. what kind of police presence is there and how does it feel for people there in new orleans? >> yeah, right now this section of canal street is still an active crime scene, and there is a strong police presence here. you have new orleans police as well as state police, national guard and the fbi still investigating on scene here. we're going to step out of the way just to give you a glimpse of what the scene is looking like right now. we are still seeing some tourists out and about as, again, the sugar bowl as of right now is still scheduled for this afternoon. but again, in this juxtaposition
7:33 am
of this crime scene happening in this historical part of new orleans right now, what you're looking at right now, this is the intersection of canal street and the historical bourbon street, where police say the suspect drove a pickup truck through a crowd at 3 a.m. on new year's day. certainly not how tourists here wanted to start this new year. but again, we do know that it's still early on in this investigation and still a lot of answers and a lot of questions during this investigation. pam. >> so, so many questions. are there restrictions for people heading to the hotels and restaurants and tourist spots? i know that was an issue right off the bat, and i can imagine a lot of people are still there visiting. >> yeah, pam, we can tell you that there are certain businesses, especially on bourbon street right now, that are blocked off because of this police tape, but we are
7:34 am
expecting bourbon street to reopen later today. so again, we do expect that of course, some businesses have lost money because of this. but of course, that's all still part of this investigation. and it was important for police to really tape off this area during that early part. >> pam, caroline elliott, thank you so much. you're live there in new orleans. thank you for that update. i know you're going to be there. we're expecting that police and fbi press conference, so we'll keep an eye on that later this morning. thank you. >> our time now 734. this afternoon the sugar bowl in new orleans will be played. it was postponed yesterday because of the deadly attack. new year's morning. now security is going to be even tighter than previously planned. the college football playoff game between notre dame and the university of georgia will be held at the superdome. the two schools have tens of thousands of supporters in new orleans for that big game.
7:35 am
>> we have to be extremely vigilant and much more vigilant than we have been in the past. typical security measures have to be enhanced, and we're not doing that fast enough to keep up with the bad guys. >> the ghost town, really, you walk around, it's there's nobody out on the streets. and so we tried to walk down there and they turned us around. there's barricades everywhere. >> now, law enforcement in new orleans may have to really reevaluate their security measures. the city will host the super bowl next month. they plan to fence off the superdome to prevent any cars from getting close to the stadium. >> governor newsom and his office is urging people to be extra vigilant during events over the next few days. following the deadly truck attack in new orleans. right now, local law enforcement agencies say there are no credible threats here. even so, at an event celebrating the final night of hanukkah last night, many people there, i was a little nervous because of the
7:36 am
events that have happened. >> but we still can't live in fear and we still have to show up. >> we've been here eight nights straight every night celebrating, and there hasn't been any obstacles or any incidents. and we're, you know, people feel safe, they feel confident. they feel secure. thanks to the san francisco police department. >> public safety experts say there are a lot of efforts behind the scenes to make sure events across the bay area are protected. >> the northern california regional intelligence center is one of 80 centers around the nation whose sole focus is to try to prevent those threats, try to provide infrastructure, better resources to protect themselves, and working with the whole community, not just law enforcement. >> part of those efforts include sharing tips from the public with other public safety organizations to make sure there is coordination between the law enforcement community to prevent and solve this kind of attack. >> our time now 736. a mother, a grieving mother in oakland speaking out after her son was shot and killed on new year's
7:37 am
eve. police say that willie bernstein was shot tuesday morning as he was arriving to his job at auto claw. it's a cleaning supply company at 14th and poplar. witnesses told police the shooter approached him with an assault rifle and shot and killed him before taking off in a car. no arrests have been made. the police have not said anything about a motive. his mother told ktvu she doesn't know why anyone would target her son, a married man and a father of two. >> why, when you got so many people out here that do wrong, why take somebody who's doing right? everyone that knew him loved him. he was a light, amazing light. he just was this big ball of energy. >> now oakland police want anyone who has tips or surveillance video related to the investigation to please come
7:38 am
forward. >> we are following another tragic start to the new year in honolulu, hawaii, where a fireworks explosion killed three people. witnesses say neighbors quickly jumped into action to try to help those who were injured. 20 people were hurt. they are all listed in critical condition. >> what was significant about this event is there were just so many in the red category. of the 21 patients we transported to hospitals, most of them were considered red or critical. >> over half of the people that are in the hospital are probably going to have life transforming injuries with burns and disability. there will be limbs lost. they got stopped. you know, they got to stop. this is not a joke. this is actually a bomb and it becomes a war zone. what what you're looking at behind me is a war zone. >> homes and cars across the street were damaged. windows were blown out. you do need a permit to use fireworks. under hawaiian state law, but court documents show very few violations ever result in guilty
7:39 am
verdicts. >> all right. time now. 738 right back to. you. must feel like you're still on vacation because there's not a whole lot of traffic. >> well, you know, i like telling people that things are okay if you're going to san francisco. dave and pam, today, people who are going at least right now, looks pretty good driving across the bridge. i think it should be looking okay. i think this is kind of a rest and relaxation week for a lot of people, even some people who do have to check in are doing so from home. so the roads are doing well. i keep going to this camera. that's my bad. but that is a beautiful sunrise, isn't it? that's my highway four camera that's turned over to the delta for the sunrise. okay, i'm lingering too long. let's talk about traffic again. you can see that traffic is moving along okay. and also interstate 880 is moving along very well. so not a lot going on. 739 let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you sal. whether it's fitness goals, diet
7:40 am
changes, new habits, staying on track with our new year's resolutions can be tough. >> i know you're going to be drinking a lot of water. >> i did say that. yes. >> okay, so we want to hear from you this morning. so let's go to andre senior. he's right over here with our viewer poll of the day. haha. >> be nice. he's making a face. let's get started. >> all right, all right, all right. this morning we're asking, do you find it difficult to keep your new year's resolution? here are your options. yes, i'm already over it. the other one, it's a hit or miss type of thing or. no, i got this. and right now it's a hit or miss type of thing, which i think many people will say 75% of the vote here. so let us know what you think by going to ktvu.com/vote. give us your thoughts about new year's resolutions. >> pam and dave i was having here's my water, i'm drinking my water. i was having this conversation with my daughters because i always think it's great to set new year's goals. maybe. but i said set realistic goals. don't say i'm going to work out every day. yeah, that might be difficult. >> maybe three days a week. >> like set something realistic.

[music] >> i'm all for setting some goal, right? >> you start one one at a time, a little at a time. yeah. >> maybe not. >> go to starbucks today. >> oh, yeah. >> save some money. that's probably on a lot of people's list. thank you for weighing in. there they go. there it goes. as we go to break one more look at that poll. you can scan that qr code on your screen. and we're going to keep talking about this throughout the morning. so thank you for weighing- [music] in. it's no about 5050
7:44 am
mornings on two. time now 743. some of the stories we're following for you this morning. the death toll is rising after that shocking new year's day attack in new orleans. 15 people now confirmed dead. dozens more are injured. the fbi has identified the attacker as a former member of the u.s. army. he used a truck to plow into crowds on bourbon street early yesterday morning, and died in a gunfight with police. the fbi in las vegas is also investigating a deadly explosion of a cyber truck at a potential tear as a potential terrorist attack that happened right in front of the trump international hotel on new year's morning. one person inside the truck was killed. several people nearby were injured. investigators say the explosion came from large fireworks, gasoline and camp
7:45 am
fuel canisters packed into the back of that rented truck. in san francisco's flower market opened this morning at a new location. it has moved to potrero hill. after being located in soma for nearly 60 years. many of the long standing vendors at the old location have moved to the new spot. there's also expanded space for newcomers. getting you a fresh look inside at all those flowers. it officially opens to the public at 8:00 this morning. >> all right, pam. time now, 745. this morning, california's department of water resources will conduct its first snow survey of the season. now, the new year is a good time to look at california's drought and fire conditions. california had several big fires in 2024, but they were not in swarms. 2023 was a wet year that also led to fewer wildfires. >> if you compare where we were 20 years ago, ten years ago, you can just tell that the innovation, the technology that
7:46 am
we have to use and also the public's education on, on, on being fire safe is just so much more better than where we were. >> authorities also point to aggressive responses to fires like clearing out weeds and brush around homes, burying utility lines underground, keeping a close eye on forest lands with around the clock cameras, and are using artificial intelligence. this comes as california's six biggest reservoirs, at 122% of their historical average levels at the beginning of the year. >> i think that there should be more mandates about, you know, conserving water and reminders constantly because, as you said, we don't know what we have ahead of us. >> officials say the state is in a pretty good position right now. time now 746. a new plant in antioch will soon begin removing salt from the delta and converted into fresh water. the
7:47 am
plant works by using reverse osmosis to remove salt and other minerals that will allow antioch to use that delta water during times where salinity levels normally would be too high. the plant cost $97 million to build. right now, public works officials say it's not clear if this process will make water bills go higher for antioch residents. >> in today's dollars and cents, the battle between bay area airports to bring in more travelers is growing, and there could be new restrictions on drones in the u.s. more on that in just a second. first, the first opening bell of the new year rang in a pretty good rally. at the beginning of the day, all three major market indexes headed much higher. this morning, right when the bell rang. they've come back a little bit right now at this hour, but that is the cross ringing the opening bell in recognition of blood donor mouth month. they do need donors. so consider that if you can. now as we take a live look dow jones shot right up. so
7:48 am
did the s&p 500 and the nasdaq when the bell rang. but they've all come back a bit right now for the start of the new year. there's a live look at the dow jones up slightly about 49 points or so. the s&p 500 also up slightly. same for the nasdaq so far this morning. the u.s. commerce department is considering a restriction or ban on drones made in china. the commerce department cited national security concerns when announcing the potential ban this morning. the agency reports the drones could include software that allow remote access or manipulation of the devices, and that sensitive data could be exposed. most commercial drones in the u.s. are made in china. the department is accepting public comment on the possible rules through march 4th. and there's another strike threat looming at the east coast and gulf coast ports. talks are scheduled to begin once again between the ports and the union, representing more than 45,000 dock workers, following a tentative deal back in october to end a short strike. then, while that deal brought a pay
7:49 am
raise, there's still some questions about automation at the ports. the unions say the technology threatens jobs. the u.s. maritime alliance says modernization is necessary to remain competitive. well, oakland airport has lost its only direct flight to europe, according to the san francisco business journal. azores airlines is no longer flying out of oakland. it offered summer service to the azores islands, which is just off the coast of portugal. the decision is reportedly in part due to air portugal announcing plans to start flights out of sfo to the azores instead. oakland is reportedly looking for other airlines to increase its service to europe. all right, let's head over to sal. check in on the commute. it's been a pretty slow. you think a lot of people had to head back to work after the holidays? but it's pretty light, i should say, not slow light. >> yes, i would say so. pam, i think that monday might be the day. in years past, it's been kind of a gradual ramp up. maybe on monday we might still have lighter conditions, but then as
7:50 am
the week wears on, we're going to see more. right now we don't see a lot. and let's go right to the pictures. you can see traffic is moving along very well. we have not had a backup at the bay bridge for a couple of weeks now. most people have been taking time off or just enough people have so that there's not a backup. still plenty of people on the road, but just not a lot of backups. 749. let's talk about the weather. and here's mr. steve paulson. >> mr. sal castaneda yes. thank you. you're welcome. appreciate that. all right. we'll take a look at january 2nd climate data on the lows on the record lows. we're not going to set any. but there's some that are kind of interesting here. the san francisco and san jose record lows, 37 and 23 were both set on this date in 1924. those two go back the farthest, if you will, santa rosa and livermore. 26 were both set in 2022, so some a long time ago, others not that long ago. speaking of santa rosa, your rain year, which is
7:51 am
july 1st, i use the rain year, not the water year. 2568 if everything comes in tomorrow, you may have about 2650 by this time. tomorrow is the way it's kind of looking. average is 12 and 18/100. you are 211% of normal. so north it's been great. south not so much today. mostly sunny in the morning here. chilly, not as cold, but mostly clear. higher clouds are spilling in little haze, maybe around the edges. clouds increase later. so morning sun, afternoon clouds. and then the system looks like this could be maybe the last one for a little bit. hopefully not a lot of it. and then january is not looking real promising for rain. it's looking big time for areas back east, but not for us here. 40 on most of the temps, a couple of 30s, but mainly 40s on the temps. so unless you're well north, we'll have to hold off on rain until late tonight or tomorrow. but increasing clouds later today overnight into rain on friday morning. it looks pretty good for santa rosa, san rafael, napa about san francisco, oakland north, far less to the south. nothing we haven't seen ad nauseum going back here this season here. and
7:52 am
snow in the mountains. we'll get that. and then after that, looks like the weekend looks pretty good if you're going up there. so morning sun afternoon clouds highs 5060. but santa clara valley i think could get into the mid 60s today. >> all right steve thank you. time now 751. we're still following the latest about the suspect and the victims in that deadly attack in new orleans. coming up at 8:00. we're going to go back to the scene and get an update on the investigation this morning. and the 49ers for their last game of the season won't have their starting quarterback. we'll tell you why. brock purdy will sit out the season finale against the cardinals. [music]
7:55 am
come back to mornings on two at 754. police in vallejo are investigating a deadly new year's eve shooting. police were notified after a man went to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. they found out the man was shot on kemper street in a neighborhood near six flags discovery kingdom. the man later died of his injuries. we don't know his name yet. if you have any information about this, contact vallejo police in butte county. a five year old boy who was shot in a school shooting is still in the hospital, but his family says there is some good news. elias wolford was shot december 4th at
7:56 am
feather river adventist school. the bullet hit his chest, his abdomen and several organs. he couldn't move his legs, but his family says a couple of days ago, he wiggled his left foot. a second little boy who was shot, six year old roman mendez, was released from the hospital five days before christmas. his family says he is doing well. it is 756 new members of congress are going to be sworn in tomorrow. the 119th congress will convene with new members being sworn in, and that includes the bay area's lateefah simon, the newly elected east bay congresswoman, and sam liccardo, who represent the south bay. republicans will hold a majority in the house and the senate. they also control the white house. experts say this republican majority at all federal political levels will only increase the rhetoric that some people say that politicians don't really represent the will
7:57 am
of the people. >> many years now, citizens don't feel as if the parties of the left or the right really represent their interests. instead, they often think that parties are only working for economic elites, for example, or for lobbyists and people who have more time and resources to try to get what they want out of government. >> and as a result, people may feel disconnected from their political leaders and have a tough time taking part actively in local, state, and federal politics. well, millions of minimum wage workers will be getting a pay raise in 2025. a study by the economic policy institute says 21 states will be increasing the minimum wage pay this year, and about 9 million people are expected to benefit from it. the institute says women will make up almost 60% of those getting a pay raise in their minimum wage, and more than one fourth of the recipients are parents here in california. the state minimum wage went up to 1650 an hour.
7:58 am
and starting today, the city of san francisco will make it easier for residents to recycle christmas trees. recology sf and the city's environment department will pick up and remove old christmas trees on the regular collection day. the trees have to be free of any christmas decorations, and you have to leave it out to be picked up. recology will be picking up trees through january 17th. well, the annual polar bear skate took over san francisco's union square, kicking off 2025. now, skaters were invited and encouraged to think warm and wear bathing suits or other beach attire. look at him. they competed in a competition. they were judged on their wildest and most imaginative beach attire. the winners were a group named baywatch. it was her idea. >> she planned it out like maybe
7:59 am
last week. i just got this this morning. >> they're not cold. the safeway holiday ice rink in union square is open every day until january 20th. well, the 49ers getting ready for their final game of the season. they'll be without quarterback brock purdy and maybe some other starters because of injuries. head coach kyle shanahan says brock purdy will sit out this week. he injured his elbow in monday's loss to the detroit lions. it's not a major injuries, but it's enough to sideline him, coach shanahan says. with brock purdy out, joshua dobbs here will be the starter sunday against his old team, the arizona cardinals. several other players sat out of practice on wednesday because of injuries or illness, and that includes tight end george kittle and wide receivers deebo samuel and ricky pearsall. >> with it being a short week and where we're at here being the last game of the season. i
8:00 am
mean, we're not going to ask guys to play through some injuries and stuff like that. so i mean, none of these are too serious. some are more serious than others. so hopefully these guys feel better as the week goes and can get into practice tomorrow. >> the 49ers have a record of six and ten, and they have been eliminated from the playoffs. unthinkable. [music] >> no one, and i mean no one, expects to wake up to new year's this way. >> well, investigators in new orleans are still picking up the pieces from that deadly attack that turned the french quarter into a scene of mass murder. new details coming to light and the suspect and his motivation as well. we'll have more on that. and we're hearing from bay area family in new orleans. and on bourbon street just hours before that attack. and here at home, a violent start to the year in the east bay, the latest deadly shooting in oakland, capping off a holiday where at least five people were killed. >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> welcome to mornings on two. it is 8:00 on the dot. you're
8:01 am
looking live across san francisco towards the bay and the east bay in the distance there, and you can see a little bit of haze over the bay right now. we're starting off with a cold morning. we're going to get an update on where things stand for the rest of the day in just a moment. but first, thank you so much for joining us i'm andre senior. >> good morning i'm pam cook. happy new year to you. a lot of people back to work today. it is thursday january 2nd. let's head right over to steve paulson because it looks pretty nice. like you said a little hazy but some sun. but i think that's changing. >> i appreciate you sending me the blue memo this morning i know right? >> yes, the blue memo is i turn on the tv before i leave for work so i can see what you all are wearing. >> you have that opportunity? yes. no doubt. all right. yeah. a little haze out there. a lot of high clouds coming in in advance. we're fine for the morning here. clouds will continue to roll in throughout the afternoon. had a few 30s, mainly 40s on the temps. our system is still a little ways away. unless you're north and it will start to turn mostly cloudy, but late tonight. more likely. by this time tomorrow
8:02 am
morning we'll be talking about rain and it looks pretty good again about san francisco, oakland north, mainly marin county, san pablo bay, north santa rosa. that'd be good rain. san jose once again, south just not happening. so your thursday thoughts do have high clouds coming in. morning sun then high clouds will increase later today. temperatures 60s could be kind of on the mild to warm side in the santa clara valley. all right. sal is here. 801i don't think he has his feet on the desk, but he could unless something happened. >> steve, the tech people are not here. they're just not. there's no traffic in what you're saying is green south bay. it's green. apple campus, facebook, whatever campus you think might have some slowing in the silicon valley. not there today. oakland traffic also looks good. and if you're trying to get to san francisco, the bay bridge is light, so just be careful out there. chp does not have the time off, you know. 802. let's get back to the headlines. >> rachel, thank you so much. let's get right to it now. we're expecting an update any minute now after that deadly new year's attack in new orleans. that left at least 15 people dead, dozens of others injured. police are set to deliver an update. it's
8:03 am
expected to happen maybe in about ten minutes from now. in the meantime. caroline. caroline. elliott. she is live from new orleans right now with new information from the fbi this morning. caroline, you're learning some new details about the person who is suspected of carrying out this attack. what can you tell us? >> yeah. andre, in the last few minutes here, fox just confirmed that the fbi no longer believes other suspects were involved. now, again, we're just going to read straight from this email from our producer that says the bureau still wants people to come forward with information regarding the driver. but after many interviews yesterday, they now believe he acted alone. now, of course, we do know there are still a lot of questions surrounding this attack, and we are expecting the fbi to give an update any second now. so we'll have to see exactly what the bureau has to say. andre. >> caroline. the associated press is reporting that there
8:04 am
are plans to reopen bourbon street today. what have you heard about those plans and what is the scene out there right now? are police beginning to thin in that area? >> yeah. andre, we are hearing from new orleans police that bourbon street will reopen later today. and as far as the scene, we are still seeing increased security in this area, of course, but we are also seeing a lot of tourists, a lot of sports fans ready for the sugar bowl later this afternoon. so again, on one side of this historical part of new orleans, you're seeing a crime scene and the fbi investigating this attack. on the other hand, you're seeing a lot of sports fans ready for the game. we will also tell you that we have heard from some fans that they are no longer going to the game this afternoon because, again, there are still some security concerns, some safety
8:05 am
concerns, understandably so from some fans later this afternoon. so we'll have to see exactly what happens with that. >> and caroline andre, as you mentioned, sports fans are in town right now ready to go to the sugar bowl. what are authorities saying about security around the stadium right now, which is not far from where bourbon street is located? >> yeah, andre, what we're hearing from officials right now is that safety and security is the highest priority right now for this city. we were told that city officials completed a security sweep of the superdome yesterday following the attack. we're also hearing that increased security will be present. and the police superintendent for new orleans actually said that the security at the superdome, at the sugar bowl, we should say game later this afternoon will match that of the super bowl, which really
8:06 am
just goes to show how seriously the city is taking this situation. >> yeah, andre, this is still just a shock to many people's minds here. and i know you'll be listening when authorities hold another press conference here in just a few minutes for some new information. hopefully we'll learn about what happened here, what transpired, the motive behind this attack. caroline elliott reporting for us live there in new orleans. caroline, thank you so much. >> all right. we will go to that press conference as soon as it begins. we'll take you there. earlier this morning here on mornings on two, i spoke to a retired fbi agent about the attack in new orleans. he says tech companies have a responsibility to flag the kind of posts like the ones the shooter posted before the attack. >> and we know not only from this incident early on, but many mass tragic events, mass shootings, et cetera, that there is some sort of leakage by the attacker, whether it be days leading up to months leading up
8:07 am
to or in this case, minutes and hours before. and i do believe social media very much when they come across something like this, if they believe this is an imminent threat, that it should be passed forward. >> now, the man involved in the attack was an american citizen and an army veteran, and posted that he was inspired by isis. an isis flag was also found attached to the truck used in the attack. one bay area family was there, in new orleans on bourbon street just before the attack. stephen goldblatt of mill valley was with his family in new orleans. to celebrate the new year. they went to the french quarter but left just hours before the attack. but he woke up to text messages and voicemails asking if he was okay, cautiously optimistic that this is going to be an isolated incident. >> but i also know that that there's a lot of nervous energy in the air because there's still a number of events and the super bowl is around the corner, and
8:08 am
there's just a lot of nervous people. >> last night, goldblatt was hoping to go to the sugar bowl in new orleans between georgia and notre dame. but that game, of course, postponed until this afternoon. law enforcement say security will be increased because of that attack. there has been another deadly shooting in oakland, capping off a violent start to the year. police say it happened at 530 yesterday evening near 65th avenue. when officers arrived on the scene, they found a person who was shot. that victim was taken to the hospital but did not survive. no word yet on the victim's identity, a motive or any arrests in the shooting. >> the most recent shooting is part of a violent new year's eve and new year's day in oakland. the back to back violence happened in less than 24 hours. neighbors, neighbors who lived in this area for years say they have never encountered this level of violence before. oakland police say a man was shot outside of his workplace on 14th street just after 7:00 tuesday morning, then a deadly stabbing on 70th avenue happened
8:09 am
just before 8:00 tuesday night. about two hours later that same night, four people were shot, killing one at a party on second and alice streets in jack london square. >> like fireworks, like that kind of sound. but then the last three was like pop, pop, pop, and it didn't sound like the way fireworks go off. >> witnesses say the shooting happened at a party outside block 15, an event venue near the amtrak station. the shooting put bullet holes in a health care facility across the street and in some apartments. >> two situation is not improved. i plan to move out of this community. >> they need to do something fast to be honest, because right now there's a whole wave of closures. so many other cities are recovering and bouncing back. but oakland is not. >> this all comes after police chief floyd mitchell announced a 34% drop in homicides in nonviolent shootings in last year, compared to 2023. police say they do not have a suspect or motive yet for any of the
8:10 am
homicides. we've also reached out to the mayor's office for comment, but have not heard back yet. >> time is 809 and we don't have a lot to talk about, which is great when it comes to traffic. anyway, this is a look at the commute at the bay bridge. it looks very good and there has been not a lot to talk about all morning long and all week long really. but i think next week people are going to start filtering back whether or not it's going to be actually the same or, you know, we'll see how long it takes to get up to the typical commute level. this is a look at 880. it looks very nice. there have been no major issues here. and the silicon valley is quiet. so we've been having a decent week at 810. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. sal, a new year's celebration in hawaii goes wrong. the fireworks explosion that left at least three people dead. >> and a san francisco institution is reopening this morning in a brand new home. we take you inside the city's new
8:11 am
flower market. we'll tell you why they had to move. and the plans for this pete g. writes, "my tween wants a new phone. how do i not break the bank?" we got you, pete. xfinity mobile was designed to save you money and gives you access to wifi speeds up to a gig. so you get high speeds for low prices. better than getting low speeds for high prices.
8:12 am
8:14 am
in new orleans has risen to 15. and we can now report that the fbi believes the suspect did act alone. we're waiting on a press conference right now from police and the fbi. this is a live picture from when that press conference is going to be getting started. we're told any moment now, we will bring it to you as it starts, and we can get the latest information about what is happening there and the investigation as well. meantime, the fbi is also investigating a deadly explosion in las vegas of a cybertruck as a potential terrorist attack. you're looking at video of that blast. it happened in front of the trump international hotel on new year's morning, same time the one happened in new orleans. one person inside the truck was killed in the explosion. we've learned he was an active duty military member, and several people standing nearby were injured, too. investigators say the explosion came from large fireworks, gasoline and camp fuel canisters packed in the back of the rented cybertruck prior to the explosion. surveillance cameras showed the car driving up and down las vegas boulevard. >> we were able to trace that
8:15 am
truck through the tesla charging stations, and it arrived here in las vegas at about 730 and went up and down las vegas boulevard before immediately pulling into the trump towers. >> authorities have not released a motive in the attack. >> starting today, the freshest flowers in san francisco are in potrero hill. the san francisco flower mart has a new home for the new year. and ktvu is. amanda quintana is there to give us a sneak peek. amanda. >> it is just beautiful. surrounded by flowers. it is so. yeah, i mean, the smell, the colors. it is just so nice in here and just a brand new building. one of the things they mentioned, the lights, the lights make the flowers look more vibrant. so that's kind of cool, but it is just really cool to see this whole new space. so this is 901 16th street in potrero hill. this is the first day of this new location. so the
8:16 am
flower market was at sixth and brandon in soma for nearly 60 years before they moved here. we do have video of that old space, but that space was bought by a developer in 2014. the future was really unclear for all of these vendors at that point, but the city of san francisco really helped them find this space. so today they can finally have flower sales here, beginning after a break for the holidays. but vendors say they're happy to be in this brand new space, and customers got here early to explore what's new here. >> they've been promising me this new market for ten years and so i had to come see. it seems to me a lot smaller. there's not nearly as much walking. everything's a lot more convenient. there's nothing obstructing the aisles like there was in the old market. i like it a lot. [music] >> along with the new location, the market also has new management. the sf produce
8:17 am
market is the nonprofit in charge now, but it's really the same team as before. and many of the long standing vendors that were at the old location have moved here as well. but there are also expanded vendor opportunities, so there could be some newcomers here soon, but it's a whole different setup, which is cool. we're in kind of the front of the market when you just walk in, and this is kind of the smaller sellers. they have all these different sections, so you could go to one section and get tools like ribbon, things like that upstairs tropical plants. and then there's the big wholesalers in the back. so there's a lot to explore. and it's a cool open space that you can walk in. live in san francisco. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, amanda, thank you so much. the tournament of roses parade certainly lived up to its theme. best day ever. [music] we're waiting for the final count, but the crowd is expected to be bigger than the 2024 parade. but about 750,000 people
8:18 am
lining the streets of pasadena. the parade started with a moment of silence for the new orleans victims. more than 1000 law enforcement officers were there throughout pasadena to protect the parade and bowl game. the parade featured nearly 40 floats g. >> it's always great. we love the parade. up close and personal is the only way to be. it means the world to me. i remember decorating the floats when i was in high school. passing the high school is where i went. this is where it ended. played basketball. this is just a part of our memory. and i love the rose parade. >> one man from danville attended the parade for the second time in his life. he staked out a prime spot at 1030 tuesday morning and waited nearly an entire day to watch the parade from that vantage point. >> you should put it on your bucket list. yeah. >> have you been? >> i've been to the parade. yes. going to ucla, you know. went over there a bit and going afterwards to see the float fest
8:19 am
where you can see them up close. it's absolutely incredible. >> dave said he's been in the parade two days. he has exactly what i said when we talked about my also now on my bucket bucket list, i've seen it. >> i want to work on one of the floats. yeah, i literally want to sit there and work on one. >> pam, you should be in the parade. yeah. >> you exactly. you would? yeah. you got the wave and everything down. >> all right, you know what? it's a pretty good traffic day, guys. i'm really liking these few weeks when it comes to. if you have to go, perhaps you know, you want it to take time off at a different part of the year and say, i'm going to go to the office. you know why? because everything is so easy. it's very easy to get to work and just take time off in summer or whatever, and it's paying off for you if that's what you're doing. because look at these commutes. they look very good. no problem. getting into san francisco. and even when there are crashes, they clear and traffic immediately recovers. 19 let's go to the it looks pretty nice start out there. let's bring steve paulson in.
8:20 am
>> it is a nice start sal. we'll get right to it here. we'll take a look at the climate data for today january 2nd on record lows. we will not set any i can tell you that. but for those who are interested, the records for san francisco and san jose go back the farthest. both of these were set 37 and 23 and 1920 for santa rosa and livermore, both at 26, 2022. so not that long ago and a long time ago. speaking of santa rosa, they continue to march right along since july 1st on the rain year, now 2568 for the season, 211% of normal average is just 12 and 18/100. if it's south, it's not so good. if it's north, it's been really good. and the projection for tomorrow, at least according to what i use here, is called the gem, which is the canadian model. i think it's pretty good in the short term. slaps another 81/100 on santa rosa tomorrow. so that would, you know, just keep keep the amount ticking right along. once again though, if you're south, there's just not going to be a lot. this will be tomorrow, today, morning sun and then some afternoon clouds. higher clouds

already inching in here. little dip in the jet stream on friday. after that it looks oh so quiet and hopefully not too long. but boy, i'll tell you, january is not looking like it's going to be our rain friend after tomorrow unless something dramatically changes. mostly clear high clouds and they'll continue to ramp up throughout the day into tonight. there is an east wind coming in from the oakland berkeley hills, right into san francisco, right also into mount tamalpais. not very strong, but it is an easterly eeze, 30 for a few, but mainly 40s on the temps. we are running warmer by 1 to 7 degrees compared to yesterday. at this time, concord is plus seven napa airport plus one and half moon bay is plus nine. that's because of some of that cloud cover and higher, higher dew points here. rain is already to the north, but it's going to take a while to get here, as in tomorrow morning, and then we'll continue that until probably late morning early afternoon. then i think we're done. the weekend looks okay. if you're going to the mountains, today is good. just watch out for fog in the valley. we'll get some snow on friday. then the weekend. i think you're good to go as well. but 6 to 7

being forecast around lake level tomorrow. today. morning sun. afternoon clouds. highs will be in the 60s for most, maybe mid 60s or upper if it all falls into place in the santa clara valley after we get past friday. looks okay then maybe windy pattern early next week, you guys. >> all right steve thank you so much. appreciate it. >> all right. it could be more difficult to soon buy a drone in the u.s. the new rules being considered by the commerce department and why it all has to do with security concerns. >> and china has heard us talk about it earlier here. increased security outside tonight's sugar bowl following that attack in new orleans. what's being done to protect football fans and the changes that could be made to next month's sugar bowl

city that as far as state resources are concerned, we have the louisiana state police, the louisiana national guard, which was part of that emergency declaration, which allowed us to put an entire mp company on the ground. those become force multipliers, is what we call that in law enforcement, in the military. that helps to add to the resources that we have. wildlife and fisheries. the department of corrections, dsf, d h s our veterans affairs, our probation and parole, all state agencies, any state agency who has a post certified officers are here in this city to help secure the city. and so with that, i would like to turn it over to christopher ray, who is the deputy assistant director of the fbi's counter terrorism division. chris. >> thank you, governor landry.

good morning. i am fbi deputy assistant director christopher wray. i'm from our counterterrorism division at headquarters. i'm also joined by special assistant special agent in charge alethea duncan from our new orleans office, who you heard from yesterday. i'm here to discuss not only the latest investigative information we have here in new orleans, but to also let you know about other investigative activities outside of the state. i first and most importantly, want to send our deepest condolences to the victims of this horrific attack and their loved ones. 14 innocent victims were killed in this senseless attack, and at least 35 were injured. we cannot ease the grief. people in this community and across the nation are feeling at this time. but rest assured, we stand with you and in support of you all the

resources. and i'm going to go into that a little bit a little bit later. all the resources of the fbi are being focused on tracking down every piece of evidence, every lead, every interview, every potential, every every potential lead we've got. while i won't be able to answer all your questions today, my goal is to be as forthcoming as possible with you on what we've uncovered so far. first and foremost, let me be very clear about this point. this was an act of terrorism. it was premeditated and an evil act. this was obviously a critical incident. and with that, lots of information and tips come pouring in from law enforcement, first responders and the public. we have been aggressively running down these tips and information. as you all know, that takes time and we will continue to do so until every lead has been followed through on. this investigation is only a

little more than 24 hours years old, so 24 hours old. so i ask you to keep in mind that as i go through some of the specifics later, but at this point, currently and this is another position, another fact i want to be clear on, we do not assess at this point that anyone else involved in this attack is involved in this attack, except for shamsuddin jabbar, the subject you've already been briefed on. a little bit about what the fbi is doing. so we are surging people and assets to the area from across the region and across the nation. special agents in multiple field offices across the country have been deployed and are assisting with potential aspects of this investigation and following up on every lead. additional teams of special agents, professional staff and victim specialists continue to arrive to provide more investigative power and

assistance to the victims and their families. we have also forward deployed a number of our critical incident response group assets, including members of our hostage rescue team, special agent bomb technicians and crisis management coordination coordinators. in addition, we have deployed more evidence response technicians to continue to process the various scenes that we have. so far, we have received just over 400 tips from the public, and that information is being followed up on both, on on both here in new orleans and across the country. some of the tips are here in new orleans. and there are other tips in other states across the country that we are following up on. the fbi team and our law enforcement partners here are also reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance and other video from both the french quarter and other locations. as for a

timeline, at this point, investigators believe jabar picked up the rented f-150 in houston, texas on december 30th. he then drove from houston to new orleans on the evening of the 31st, and he posted several videos to an online platform proclaiming his support for isis. there were five videos posted on jabbar's facebook account, which are timestamped beginning at 1:29 a.m. and the last at 3:02 a.m. in the first video, jabar explains he originally planned to harm his family and friends, but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the, quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers, end quote. additionally, he stated he had joined isis before this summer. he also provided a will and testament. fbi and atf. fbi. we

have a couple different scenes at the location. as you as you. we have released the scene at bourbon street. that scene has been released. we also have a scene of a man off of a mandeville address, where we're currently searching that that scene right now. fbi and atf agents have secured that house, and that location is being searched for potential evidence. on new year's morning, jabar opened fire after ramming through a blocked off area of bourbon street, used his truck as a weapon to run over the victims. teams of specially trained victim specialists. again, as i said, are on the ground here in new orleans assisting survivors of the attack and loved ones of the deceased. we do not believe the public is in any danger around any of these locations. three

phones linked to jabar have been recovered, and digital media exploitation is a priority. to see what is on the devices and determine if there are any other potential leads. additionally, we have recovered two laptops and are currently reviewing them for any potential leads. those laptops were recovered at the mandeville address. evidence technicians will also be going over the f-150 truck jabar was driving. as you know, we recovered an isis flag from the back of the vehicle. jabar declared his support for the terrorist group on social media. as i stated before, as he made his way to new orleans. fbi bomb technicians also recovered two ieds in coolers, one from the cross section of bourbon and orleans street, and the second at an intersection approximately two blocks away. there were
8:34 am
multiple reports of other devices. those reports turned out to be misinformation or not. not not actual functioning devices. those are the only two devices that we've been able to recover that were functional. both devices were rendered safe. on scene, we did obtain surveillance footage showing jabar placing the devices where they were found. two other of two other, as i said before, two other items of interest were determined not to be ieds. a little bit about jabar. jabar himself was born in the united states and is a us military veteran. we are looking in everything in his life. while we have interviewed many people who know jabar, we still need to talk to others. whether, you know jabar personally worked with him, served in the military or saw him in new orleans or texas. we need to talk to you. you may not think you have

relevant information, but what you know could tie in to one of our investigative leads. specifically, we want to talk to anyone who was in the french quarter on new year's eve or early on new year's day. that includes people spotted near one of the two ieds on bourbon street, the i that includes the ied was inside a cooler, and many people stopped and looked at the cooler and then continued on their way. let's be clear again. we do not believe at this point these people are involved in this incident in any way. we want to speak to them as witnesses and want to know what they saw and when. i went down to the crime scene last night, it is very hard to put into words what it looked like and how difficult it was to see. anyone with information can call

also, although i've only been on the ground here a short time, i also want to express the sincere appreciation for our partners here, which include the u.s. attorney's office, hpsci, atf, the new orleans pd, the louisiana state police, the governor's office, and countless others. at this point, i'm going to turn it over to the special agent in charge of atf here, josh jackson. >> 217 all right. so you were just listening to the news conference by the fbi. they're giving an update on the new orleans attack. that was christopher wray, deputy assistant director for the fbi, discussing what we know. he said, unlike what we know, the updated death toll is now 14 instead of 15. that is some new information that he released, the other new information that was released that they do believe the suspect acted alone. in this case. there were no other people involved, but they do have video of him placing the ied devices that were found in
8:38 am
his truck at different points in the french quarter, two ieds. they were in coolers. the fbi says they have video of people that stopped by and look at the coolers and walked away. and they specifically want to talk to those people. they're trying to interview as many people as possible to piece together exactly how all of this happened. more troubling here is they said the suspect originally planned to harm his family and friends, but didn't think that would. essentially, i'm paraphrasing here, get him the publicity. so he decided to carry out this attack where he drove around barricades onto bourbon street, mowing down many, many people, killing now 14 that we've learned there are two other there are two areas that they're searching here bourbon street in the french quarter. there's also another address in mandeville that they're also looking at at this moment, as they try to put together exactly what happened there. this deadly attack in new orleans on new year's eve, new year's day, the big revelers are out there on bourbon street in the french quarter, a packed area. i've been there many times, and it's something you just, you know, you forget about when you're out there having a good time. but that's what these
8:39 am
people are doing when this when the suspect carried out what the fbi is now calling an act of terrorism, that he did this, he premeditated this, this, this, this attack and carried it out as an act of terror. >> an important information, though, for people who are there. people are heading to the sugar bowl, thinking about people there at the sugar bowl that they don't believe the public is in any danger, most likely because of the information that he just gave us, that they have video of the man who was killed in the shooting after the attack, placing those those devices. they do not believe that he acted with anyone else, that he acted alone, and that at this point he also said in terms of the las vegas possible connection, at this point, they say, you know, the fbi director there saying no definitive link at this point between the two attacks. but he did say this is very early. so again, we're going to keep an eye on this, streaming it to as well on the fox local app if you want to watch it. >> that's still happening right now. and you can watch it there on the fox local app for your smart tv, your android, or your

confident. they feel secure. thanks to the san francisco police department. >> i was a little nervous because of the events that have happened, but we still can't live in fear and we still have to show up. >> one thing about the city, though, that's good in a way, is that is that there's a lot of events here, a lot of training. the police are accustomed to big events. >> san francisco police sent out a message on social media saying in part, our thoughts are with the new orleans police department and the victims of last night's horrific incident on bourbon street. at this time, we are not aware of any credible threats to san francisco. we asked the community to alert the sfpd if they see any potential threats or suspicious activity. if you see something, say something. governor gavin newsom also said, quote, while there are currently no credible threats directed at california events, cal oes urges all californians to remain vigilant while attending public events. >> today, the northern california regional intelligence center is one of 80 centers around the nation whose sole focus is to try to prevent those

threats, try to provide infrastructure with better resources to protect themselves, and working with the whole community, not just law enforcement. >> mike sena is director of the northern california regional intelligence center. sena says working with transportation, mental health professionals and community members is essential. >> our countermeasures hopefully will, you know, keep them from harming the number of people that they'd like to. but it's really too late at that point. working with the public safety, the homeland security, the law enforcement community and the public, we can prevent these types of threats. >> sena says there is an intelligence center in louisiana called la safe, run by the state police, and he says that the public has a very important role to play in prevention. if you see anything suspicious or if you know anyone who might be a threat, you're asked to call law enforcement agencies. reporting in san francisco jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> for the past few years in california, fire and water were big stories. the latest on how

conference is still going on. we are monitoring the details in our newsroom so far. we know the fbi says they now believe the driver of the truck who carried out the attack acted alone. investigators say they also have video of that same man planting explosive devices as well in the area. 14 people were killed in the attack. we are streaming this press conference live on ktvu.com. if you want to continue to listen to that as well as well as our fox local app, but we will be continuing to update this information out of new orleans throughout the morning. the fbi also says there is no definitive link at this time between the new orleans attack and the truck explosion outside trump hotel in las vegas. one person inside that rented truck was killed. investigators say the explosion came from large fireworks, gasoline and camp fuel canisters that were packed into the back
8:47 am
of that truck. well, california's first monthly snow pack survey will be released today. it's likely to be pretty good news for this early part of the season. >> ktvu tom vacar examined the numbers and looks at the impact so far on the drought and fire conditions. >> as the new year begins, it's good to take a look back and see what's happened with california's fire and water. essential elements, but also something that can lead to real problems. the golden state has had some big fires last year, but they didn't come in swarms in 2024. cal fire and the u.s. fire service battled more than 8000 fires in california that consumed just over a million acres in 2023, aided by a very wet year. there were about 1200 fewer fires that burned less than a third of the acres. but even combining both years, that's less acres than the annual average over five years. >> if you compare where we were 20 years ago, ten years ago, you

can just tell that the innovation, the technology that we have to use and also the public's education on, on, on being fire safe is just so much more better than where we were. >> super aggressive fire responses, fuel clearing projects, utility system hardening, home hardening and more than a thousand forest surveillance cameras monitored 24 over seven 365 by artificial intelligence seems to be paying off. >> i've been reading about that, and i'm sure it has, because to get to a fire quicker, you're going to save lives and property too. so that's i think that's a big deal. >> i feel like this is a great opportunity, you know, for us to, you know, improve the technology to, you know, prevent like, you know, continue working hard to prevent fires. >> california's six mega reservoirs are now at 122% of their historical average. at the beginning of 2025. that's
8:49 am
slightly better than the same time last year. this suggests that california could be in very good storage position right now, so long as people continue to conserve. >> i think that there should be more mandates about, you know, conserving water and reminders constantly because, as you said, we don't know what we have ahead of us. >> right now, the average statewide snowpack is 115% of its historical average, but it's only 40% of what it would need to be on april 1st, when the last major snow survey of the year takes place. the big concerns for reservoir levels and snowpack is that mother nature might simply turn off the spigot, as she's done in several years over the last decade. so controlling and mitigating fire and conserving and wisely using water really is paying off for the state of california. tom vacar ktvu fox two news. >> all right. time now is 849. back up with us this morning to

check on the roads, so hopefully it's a smooth sailing out there. we're still, you know, still new year's week. >> so yeah, it really has been andre and pam. it does look very good. there have been no major issues here. and if you're driving to san francisco or, you know, maybe you're doing some things out there on the roads, there's not a lot to talk about. eastbound and westbound 80 look pretty good, and there have been no major issues around. so i like what i see with the morning commute. it's 8.49. what about today's weather? let's bring steve back in. >> that's a very good question, sal. thank you sir. it will be sunny here in the morning and then clouds in the afternoon. we have one more system here coming in in the old pipeline. at least that's the way it's looking here. then it does appear like the forecast models want us to go dry for a while, but we'll get a system tomorrow. and that will give us rain, especially north. again. that looks to be the heaviest amounts. 40s on the temps had a couple of 30s, but we are running warmer than 24 hours ago by about 1 to 9 degrees. so morning sun high
8:51 am
clouds in the afternoon, rain cooler. heaviest will be north on friday. looks like it will clear out, but it won't be that warm. we'll actually cool off a little bit and you can see santa rosa being forecast. 81 100 napa, three quarters up to lakeport. two thirds of an inch. same for cloverdale, san rafael a half inch. but you get down towards palo alto and san jose. it's the same old song and dance as aerosmith would sing, but it's just not happening. areas south, at least not in the current pattern. mostly sunny in the morning. a lot of cloud cover is on the way. it will get here eventually, but it's going to take another about 18 to 24 hours. so again, if you're north, i would prepare for some pretty good rain. at least that's what this forecast model is projecting. if you're south, you'd be like again. yep. again snow go today you'll be good. except for fog in the valley. weekend looks good, but tomorrow 6 to 7 is being forecast up there around lake tahoe. so a sweet thursday morning sun, afternoon clouds, maybe on the warm side. santa clara valley. get a little southeast breeze. maybe get some 60s there. mid 60s. most locations upper 50s, low 60s. clear it out on friday night. weekend looks okay. maybe
