who were hurt. the 20 people hurt, also listed in critical condition. >> what's significant about this event is there were just so many in the red category. of the 21 patients we transported to hospitals, most of them were considered red or critical. >> over half of the people that are in the hospital are probably going to have life transforming injuries with burns and disability. there will be limbs lost. they got stopped. you know, they got to stop. this is not a joke. this is actually a bomb and it becomes a war zone. what what you're looking at behind me is a war zone. >> homes and cars across the street were damaged. windows blown out. you do need a permit for fireworks under hawaii state law, but court documents show very few violations ever result in guilty verdicts. well, the chp is reporting a pretty unusual traffic stop just before new year's. this is a young spider monkey that was found in a rolls royce, a luxury car. it was stopped by chp for speeding. the driver of the car was at
12:44 pm
least not the monkey. this happened in madera county, north of fresno on highway 99 on monday. the driver was arrested on suspicion of dui. possession of cannabis for sale to the department of fish and wildlife. took that monkey to the oakland zoo to be cared for. it's illegal to own primates as pets in california. not clear why the driver had the spider monkey with him in the car. with cannabis for sale to california has been hit with some pretty big wildfires. of course. ktvu tom vacar examined the numbers and looks at the impact so far on the drought and fire conditions. >> as the new year begins, it's good to take a look back and see what's happened with california's fire and water. essential elements, but also something that can lead to real problems. the golden state has had some big fires last year, but they didn't come in swarms in 2024. cal fire and the u.s. fire service battled more than 8000 fires in california that consumed just over a million
12:45 pm
acres in 2023, aided by a very wet year. there were about 1200 fewer fires that burned less than a third of the acres. but even combining both years, that's less acres than the annual average over five years. >> if you compare where we were 20 years ago, ten years ago, you can just tell that the innovation, the technology that we have to use and also the public's education on, on, on being fire safe is just so much more better than where we were. >> super aggressive fire responses, fuel clearing projects, utility system hardening, home hardening and more than a thousand forest surveilling cameras monitored 24 over seven 365 by artificial intelligence seems to be paying off. >> i've been reading about that, and i'm sure it has, because to get to a fire quicker, you're going to save lives and property too. so that's i think that's a big deal. >> i feel like this is a great opportunity, you know, for us
12:46 pm
to, you know, improve the technology to. you know, prevent like, you know, continue working hard to prevent fires. >> california's six mega reservoirs are now at 122% of their historical average. at the beginning of 2025. that's slightly better than the same time last year. this suggests that california could be in very good storage position right now, so long as people continue to conserve. >> i think that there should be more mandates about, you know, conserving water and reminders constantly because, as you said, we don't know what we have ahead of us. >> right now, the average statewide snowpack is 115% of its historical average, but it's only 40% of what it would need to be on april 1st, when the last major snow survey of the year takes place. the big concerns for reservoir levels and snowpack is that mother nature might simply turn off the spigot, as she's done in several

years over the last decade. so controlling and mitigating fire and conserving and wisely using water really is paying off for the state of california. tom vacar ktvu fox two news. >> well, if the skies stay clear, you may have a chance to see a meteor shower this weekend. the quadrantid meteor shower will peak friday night into saturday morning, and since the moon is still in a crescent phase, nasa says there could be as many as 120 meteors per hour. astronomers say the best viewing will be in the hours right before dawn. they say it's best to find a dark spot away from city lights for the best chance of seeing those shooting stars. and speaking of looking up, we turn to our forecast now and a live look outside across san francisco where the sun is out. but you do have a little bit of haze over there, over the skies right now. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo for a look at your forecast on this thursday. hey, mark. hi there. >> under the clouds. expected to move in later on this afternoon into tonight, but today is a
12:48 pm
fairly nice day. good chance to get outside. but here's our next system offshore here. and rainfall expectations. all this is going to be happening tomorrow. so we're kind of getting ready for this. it's not a major deal but you can see rainfall expectations about a 10th of an inch in the south bay could be upwards of an inch up in parts of the north bay. winds around 20 to 30 miles an hour. and this will be a snow producer in the sierra. in fact, it's a colder system. so as a result, snow levels coming down to around 5000 5500ft. and here is that winter storm warning that is in place for a good portion of friday, 7 a.m. until 10 p.m, and snowfall could be right around 6 to 12in. so this is all linked up with the system that's going to move into the for tomorrow. then once it moves on out, it looks like a dry weather stretch for quite some time. so here's the forecast model showing you the rainfall coming on board tomorrow. look what happens into the weekend. it is a dry weather stretch here. this is sunday and then into early next week as well. so we have been picking up some significant rainfall over the past month or so. but what's interesting, down in southern california, they have barely picked up anything
12:49 pm
for los angeles and san diego. so it's not out of the question. they can have an increase in the fire danger over the of the coming days. as this pattern sets up. they have not picked up the real rainfall the bay area has has been receiving over the past few weeks. so showing you this, as you can see here, the satellite and the radar, some rain showers moving up along the north coast of the state right now, and then we will thicken up the high clouds throughout the afternoon hours. so partly cloudy skies out there. maybe some mostly cloudy skies up in parts of the north bay, and current numbers in the 50s and the 60s. half moon bay one of the warmer spots checking in 64 degrees, likely because a bit of an offshore wind trying to develop santa rosa. upper 50s in concord 58 degrees. here's our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. and as you can pick out some high clouds drifting in already from the north. so here is the next system. it comes on board for tomorrow. it's not going to stall out or anything. it's going to move in and move out quickly in your friday and then into the weekend. this area of high pressure wants to wants to rebuild, and this will be the
12:50 pm
source of some dry weather and potentially some warming weather as well. so here's the forecast model today. of course, we're just going to bring in some scattered high clouds. and the rain makes a comeback tomorrow morning, 8:00 tomorrow morning for your friday and then into the afternoon hours. the bulk of the action could be moving to the south and to the east throughout the afternoon hours tomorrow. still, the possibility of some leftover pop-up showers. so a bit unstable out there and then into the weekend. just some visiting high clouds, but it will be dry as we do head into the first weekend of the year. highs this afternoon will be in the low to mid 60s out there for your thursday, increasing high clouds throughout the day. and then here is a look ahead. your five day forecast. and there's that one rain cloud for your friday. a cool start for the weekend for saturday and then into next week. it looks like a dry weather pattern. and andre, as i mentioned, it's just so interesting with all the rainfall, we could be thankful for all the rainfall we have picked up in the bay area, because down in southern california, a completely different story, and i would not be surprised to see a red flag warning next week for that. that's interesting. yeah.
12:51 pm
>> and what's interesting here is that we have the rain and then we have these dry periods, which gives us a little break. and for the earth to absorb that water. so it doesn't cause any catastrophic damage to be sure. >> yeah. those breaks are so important. and it looks like we had a chance to its been pretty active. so we'll get a chance to get outside and recover this for sure. >> mark thanks so much. appreciate it. well starting later this year, if you drive an electric hybrid vehicle, you can no longer drive solo in the carpool lane. some state officials are worried, though, about how this will affect california traffic. the clean air vehicle decal program is set to expire september 30th. governor gavin newsom signed a law to extend it to 2027. however, that still needs federal approval. right now, more than half a million california drivers have the clean air sticker. caltrans says the bay area has some of the highest number of decal registrations in the state. actor justin baldoni is now suing the new york times for $250 million, accusing the publication of libel. this comes after blake lively filed a complaint accusing baldoni of sexual harassment and retaliation due to the filming of the movie. it ends with us

>> if santa goofed and didn't get the right size or color, you probably have until the end of january to get square. >> many retailers extend their return windows around the holidays. most offer 60 days. if you have a store card, you might have even more time, like 100 days. and some stores like costco don't have a time limit on most items. but a warning if you're returning an electronic device, you probably have a shorter window and need to return it sooner. >> gamestop has an $8.99 mail return fee. a company that makes returns a breeze. >> amazon if you're an amazon prime member, you can ship most items back for free. walmart, target, and plenty of other retailers don't charge shipping for returns, either. >> and let's talk about restocking fees. best buy has a 15% restocking fee on certain items, including drones and some digital cameras and lenses. if the original packaging has been opened for activatable devices like phones and tablets, the restocking fee is a flat $45.

consumer reports says nordstrom has one of the most relaxed return policies. >> nordstrom has no formal return policy. returns are handled on a case by case basis. no receipts are required. there are no time limits, and no original tags are needed. >> wherever and whatever you're trying to return, consumer reports has some tips. save the receipt. return the item as soon as possible and if you can, don't open the box. >> that was jenna saks reporting for us. now to some football. the 49ers are preparing for their final game of the season, and it will be without quarterback brock purdy and possibly some other starters due to injuries to head coach kyle shanahan says purdy will sit out this week after injuring his elbow in monday night's loss to the detroit lions. we're told it's not a significant injury, but enough to sideline him, shanahan says. with purdy out, joshua dobbs will be the starter sunday against his former team, the arizona cardinals. several other players sat out of practice wednesday due to injuries or illnesses, including
12:58 pm
tight end george kittle and wide receivers deebo samuel and ricky pearsall. >> with it being a short week and where we're at here being the last game of the season, i mean, we're not going to ask guys to play through some injuries and stuff like that. so i mean, none of these are too serious. some are more serious than others. so hopefully these guys feel better as the week goes and can get in practice tomorrow. >> the niners are six and ten and have been eliminated from the playoffs. the season won't be over this sunday for at least four 49ers. the nfl announced the rosters for the pro bowl in orlando on february 2nd. the nfc has four 49ers. we're talking tight end george kittle, fullback kyle juszczyk, defensive end nick bosa and linebacker fred warner. more niners could actually go to the pro bowl if other players drop out. the pro bowl will feature a flag football game instead of tackle football. there will also be skill competitions leading up to the game, such as dodgeball and a tug of war. the san diego zoo took the top prize of the rose parade for the second year in a row. take a look at the

float that won the top prize. it's called friendship across earth. the float features the zoo's two giant pandas frolicking and red pandas hanging out on a branch together. it was a close call, though, because many of the other floats were also stunning. all right, the golden state warriors are beginning the new year hosting the philadelphia 76 ers at chase center tonight. but it's still not clear if steph curry will be playing. curry is listed as questionable for the game due to a thumb injury. the warriors are currently at 10th place in the western conference. they're hoping for a good start for the new year after only winning three of the past ten games. tipoff with the sixers set for 7 p.m. tonight. the first baby born in the bay area in 2025. looks like it was born in san leandro. raymond james greenwell was born at kaiser san leandro medical center at exactly 12 a.m. new years morning. she weighs 8 pounds, measured 18in, 18.5in, in fact. hospital staff say her mom and dad are doing well, and they are
