[music] >> this is ktvu, fox two news at six. >> today, all america stands with the people of new orleans. we pray for those killed and injured in yesterday's attack. >> president biden, addressing the nation as law enforcement, confirms the attacker on bourbon street acted alone. right now, investigators are still combing through evidence, as we do learn more about the victims. good evening everyone. i'm mike mibach. tonight, many people are remembering the 14 people killed in the new year's day attack. ktvu jana katsuyama joins us live tonight from the newsroom with more information on the case. jana. >> mike. the fbi says that they found three cell phones that appeared to have belonged to the attacker. and they are now calling on the public for help crowdsourcing any video of him. the new orleans fbi field office released new surveillance photos thursday evening, asking the public for any tips and cell phone footage of the attacker, and a cooler containing an improvised explosive device,

which investigators say the suspect placed on bourbon street new year's day. >> i am opening bourbon street to the public. >> new orleans police superintendent ann kirkpatrick, who was oakland's former police chief, announced thursday that the french quarter had new security measures in place after the deadly new year's day attack. >> what you see behind us is what we call hardening the target. so we have brought in heavy trucks. you will see when you go down. bourbon. >> investigators say the attacker, shamsuddin jabar, was a u.s. citizen and a 42 year old u.s. army veteran who drove the white pickup truck into a crowd on bourbon street on new year's day, killing 14 people and injuring many more when he sped around a police barricade. jabar was from texas. he joined the army in 2007 and served in afghanistan. the fbi says he placed some ied or improvised explosive devices in the french quarter. he was killed in a clash with police who responded

to the scene. the fbi says he acted alone, but evidence does indicate he was inspired by isis. >> federal law enforcement and the intelligence community are actively investigating any foreign or domestic contacts and connections that could possibly be relevant to the attack. >> the fbi says they are reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance video. >> at this point, investigators believe jabar picked up the rented f-150 in houston, texas, on december 30th. he then drove from houston to new orleans on the evening of the 31st. >> on thursday, police searched jabar's home in texas, as well as a new orleans rental property where bomb making materials were found. >> fbi and atf agents have secured that house. we have recovered two laptops and are currently reviewing them for any potential leads. >> the fbi says jabar posted five videos on facebook on the day of the attack between 1:29 a.m. and 3:02 a.m, stating he had joined isis before the summer. the truck in the new orleans and the truck used in

the las vegas attacks were both rented through the vehicle sharing platform turo, which has a headquarters address listed on sec documents at a downtown san francisco office building. and toro posted a statement online today about the new orleans and vegas rentals, saying in part, we do not believe that either renter had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat. we do know that one of the injured was a student at san diego state. the coroner is still notifying families of those 14 victims who were killed before releasing their names. but really, mike, such a painful tragedy for these families to be starting out the new year, mourning for the people that they loved and lost. >> jana katsuyama live tonight with the very latest in the newsroom. jana. thank you. we're also learning more tonight about the cybertruck explosion right outside the trump hotel in las vegas. law enforcement have identified the driver. and they also say at this point, there appears to be no connection to the attack in new orleans, despite some striking

coincidences. ktvu greg lee here in studio with more on the investigation. greg. >> mike, good evening to you. authorities identifying the person they strongly believe was the driver is 37 year old matthew berger of colorado. they said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot before the explosion. berger is a highly decorated, active duty army special operations soldier. >> it's been confirmed by dod that he was indeed in the united states army. he was also a green beret operations sergeant who spent most of his time at fort carson, colorado, and in germany. he was on approved leave from germany, where he was serving with the 10th special forces group. he was also previously in the national guard and the army reserve. >> the sheriff there would not definitively identify the remains, but said a military id, passport, credit cards and tattoos all matched. berger to recap the incident wednesday morning. a driver in a rented tesla cybertruck pulled up to the glass doors of the trump international hotel, just off

the strip. the explosion happened within 17 seconds of his arrival. investigators say the explosion came from large fireworks, gasoline and camp fuel canisters packed in the truck. seven people were injured by the blast. investigators also found two semi-automatic guns legally purchased by berger on the 30th. authorities are still looking into the motive. >> we're running down investigative leads around the world. no information that we're aware of right now that connects this individual to any terrorist organization around the world. but that's obviously the thrust of the investigation is ruling out that there is any sort of terrorism nexus. >> now, as we've been reporting, the fbi said they have found no definitive link between the explosion and the new orleans attack. law enforcement did point out both men served at fort bragg in north carolina, though not in the same unit, nor at the same time. they both also served in afghanistan in 2009. all of that remains under investigation. the sheriff also outlined the route that berger

the first two days ktvu christien kafton live tonight from the scene of one of those incidents. christian. >> yeah, mike, as you said, we are just two days into the new year. we've already seen three shootings, one of them happening in the building right here behind me. now, san francisco police say the shooters in these cases are either in custody or dead. either way, it is a very violent start to the new year. 2025 is off to a deadly start with a series of shootings, including this one shortly after eight thursday morning near alemany boulevard. >> my name is anthony thomas. i'm the father of the deceased male. antoine thomas. he took his took his life for, for some strange reason. i didn't. i didn't get a chance to make it here on time to stop it. and now he's gone. >> anthony thomas said his 24 year old son's girlfriend called him frantically, telling him to come over right away. but by the time he arrived, the tragedy had already unfolded. the younger

thomas, he said, dead by his own hand. the girlfriend rushed to the hospital in critical condition and a toddler, also injured but expected to survive. >> the baby was a year and a half year and a half year and a half. so yeah, she's going to have to have to grow up without the dad and everything. he's going to have to grow up without a dad. >> in a separate incident thursday afternoon, san francisco police confirmed they had arrested a woman in connection with the shooting on the 800 block of bryant. at about 10 a.m, officers arrived on scene and located two victims, an adult male and an adult female suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. >> the victims were transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. >> investigators caught the woman, who they say pulled the trigger hours later in the city's tenderloin district. >> at this time, this is an active investigation. >> san francisco police also say they have a suspect in custody after a homicide on the first day of the year, the first homicide of the year. investigators say shortly after

midnight on new year's day, 29 year old jose rivera flores shot a man near the intersection of venice and 17th. >> right after the shooting, the suspect fled from the area in an suv. a few hours later, officers located the suspect vehicle in the area of bayshore and geneva and were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident. >> now, all of this comes on the heels of a year that saw homicides in san francisco dropped steeply to their lowest level since the 1960s, with just 35 homicides over the course of 2024. we're live in san francisco. christian captain, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, christian, thank you for that. tonight, the chp is investigating a new year's day head-on collision in the south bay that killed a pregnant woman and 29 year old woman was a passenger in an suv that was hit by a suspeed dnk driver and a pickup truck in gilroy. it happened just around 630 yesterday. according to e chp. the pickup was speedg east on

leavesley road, east of new avenue. the truck crossed into th westbound lane, hit the suv and then another vehicle, 50 year old jesus carlos torres of mountain view, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. east bay jewish leaders are expressing outrage tonight after a hateful message was written on a concrete slab right near the menorah along lake merritt in oakland. the jewish community relations council shared video of the graffiti, which was drawn last night on the last night of hanukkah. the menorahs belong to the chabad jewish center of oakland. its rabbi says hanukkah is a religious event and not a political one. >> the menorah does not symbolize israel. the menorah symbolizes judaism. it symbolizes the light of hanukkah over the darkness of the of the oppressors. that's really what the menorah is about. and this menorah is not it's not political. it has nothing to do with any side of any issue here. this is, you know, it's symbolizing the light of

in, where police say two people died and 18 people were injured in a small plane crash. authorities got a report about 2:00 this afternoon that a plane had crashed right through this commercial building rooftop. emergency crews knocked down a fire when they arrived. the chopper footage overhead shows smoke marks covering the rooftop. this is right near the

fullerton municipal airport, about six miles outside of disneyland. the extent of the victim's injuries remain unclear, as well as if they were inside the plane or on the ground. san francisco mayor elect daniel lurie, announcing his pick for a newly created position in his administration. chief of public safety. ktvu crime reporter henry lee live tonight in the city after meeting with the law enforcement vet here who will fill that very role. henry. >> well, paul. yep. as a retired commander with the san francisco police department and in his new role with the mayor's office, he will not only work with sfpd, but other public safety partners here in the city. there are many layers, but part of my job is to make sure that we're all working together towards the same goal, and that's to make a safer san francisco. former san francisco police commander paul yip has been named the city's first ever chief of public safety by incoming mayor daniel lurie. my main goal as chief of public safety is to ensure that the people that live, play and work in san francisco feel safe. the

city ended 2024 with crime far lower than the year before. if that can be of little comfort to residents and victims. statistics are very important. numbers are important. they tell one story. but if people don't feel safe, then we really haven't accomplished what we need to accomplish. yep. served with the san francisco police department for more than 28 years and served as captain at central, northern, and richmond stations at one point. yet provided details of deadly shootings by officers during virtual town hall meetings. more recently, yip was at lurie's side during the campaign in his new role with the mayor's office. yip will work with the police department, sheriff's office, district attorney, fire department, public defender and probation sheriff paul miyamoto hailed the appointment, calling yip a deeply passionate leader. miyamoto says he's known personally for more than 35 years, since before their law enforcement careers, but noticeably absent from lurie's announcement was any mention of the city's top cop, bill scott. lurie has not said whether he intends to keep scott as chief.

i've worked with bill scott in the past and i look forward to working with him in the future. his future is going to be determined. i asked if he would want to be chief if asked by the mayor. i am 100% focused on the job that i have now as chief of public safety. i take it very seriously and that's my passion and that's what i'm going to do. now. yip is one of many people named a top post in lurie's administration. now, lurie will be part of a number of inaugural events on wednesday. live in san francisco. henry lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, henry, thank you for that. let's talk about the inauguration. inauguration plans are taking shape for mayor elect daniel lurie. the inauguration will be on wednesday morning, 1130 at city hall. the public is invited to attend, although seating will be limited to ticketed guests. the mayor elect will later appear at a chinatown night market and community festival that night. lurie will also attend a celebration at far east cafe, which is the neighborhood's last remaining large banquet hall. glide is

planning a tribute for outgoing mayor london breed this weekend. the organization, which does include glide memorial church, will have a special service on sunday for mayor breed. she is expected to share her reflections on her faith and time in public service. mayor breed has not yet said what her plans will be after she leaves office. and with the new year comes more new bart faregates. embarcadero and south hayward are the next two stations to get the next generation. faregates installation at south hayward actually begins tomorrow. it is expected to take two weeks to finish. construction at embarcadero starts january 10th and will happen in stages now. so far, bart has installed these new gates at 15 other stations. all stations in the system are set to have the new gates by the end of the year. >> it was actually a real pretty day here in the bay area today, with temperatures well above average for this winter time. we did have blue skies and temperatures topped off at 68 degrees in san jose, nearly ten degrees above average, livermore

barbara lee's final day in office. lee shared a lengthy statement on social media along with this picture taken following her first swearing in to the 105th congress in 1987. in her statement, lee said she would continue to fight for working families, the middle class and those with low income. lee's next step remains uncertain. some oakland residents have called on her to run for mayor of oakland. now, she previously told ktvu she's still debating whether or not to run and would make an official announcement on her plan sometime this month. today is also the last day in washington for retiring silicon valley congresswoman anna eshoo. she delivered her final speech on the house floor last month, as

she was elected to congress 32 years ago. she was the first democrat and first woman to represent her district, as she served on the house intelligence, energy and commerce committees and authored or coauthored more than 60 laws. former san jose mayor sam liccardo was elected to fill her seat in congress. new california senator adam schiff announced that he will serve on the senate judiciary committee. in a post on x. schiff says he will also. he also received assignments to the agriculture, small business and environment and public works committees. schiff says the assignments will allow him to help build a stronger economy and protect our democracy and planet. schiff was sworn in last month to the seat formerly held by the late senator dianne feinstein. the house and senate are scheduled to meet for a joint session of congress on january 6th, but fox news chad pergram reports if house members do not vote for a speaker tomorrow, that session next week may not happen. >> the 119th congress is set to begin friday, but the house of

representatives can't function until members elect a speaker. >> president trump is the coach. he asked for speaker johnson to remain as speaker, and we should listen to the coach and go about enacting the play. >> incumbent house speaker mike johnson is on the ballot, but his road to reelection could face challenges. >> speaker johnson is not able to govern and is not actually willing to commit to do his constitutional duty. we have a titanic on the crash course with the iceberg, and our country fiscally is going to have a disaster. >> republicans have a razor thin majority in the house. just a few no's from republicans could put johnson's grasp on the gavel at risk. >> it's a numbers game. we have the smallest margin in u.s. history. we'll have a margin of probably two votes tomorrow during that, so can only afford to lose 1 or 2. but i think we'll get it done. >> since johnson's tenure began, some house republicans have been disappointed with his decisions. fox has told more than ten conservatives could vote for someone else.

shootings in the first two days of the new year. in one case, a family member telling us a man took his own life after shooting his girlfriend and their son. the woman was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the toddler is expected to survive. also, a woman is under arrest in the double shooting south of market this afternoon. the victims are also expected to survive. police say they also have a suspect in custody involved in a homicide on wednesday. a retired san francisco police commander has been appointed as the city's first chief of public safety. mayor elect daniel lurie today announcing paul yep, a 28 year vet of the san francisco police department, will assume the newly formed position. yep. will be tasked with coordinating all

determine his exact motive. bourbon street reopening on thursday, one day after a pickup truck plowed into a crowd, killing more than a dozen people. investigators now believe the suspect, a 42 year old u.s. army veteran, acted alone and say social media posts show he was inspired by isis. >> he originally planned to harm his family and friends, but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the, quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers. >> the fbi says the suspect rented the truck in houston on december 30th and then drove it to new orleans. on thursday, police searched his texas home for potential evidence, as well as a rented new orleans property where bomb making materials were found. >> fbi and atf agents have secured that house. we have recovered two laptops and are currently reviewing them for any potential leads. >> and despite concerns, the sugar bowl kicked off this afternoon after being pushed back a day, national guard troops and police deployed to

secure the scene. louisiana officials, now facing questions over whether the city is prepared to host future events, including the super bowl and mardi gras. >> we're ready to continue to host large scale events in our city because we are built to host at every single turn. >> and at this time, the fbi says there's no evidence directly linking the tragedy here in new orleans to that cybertruck explosion in las vegas. >> mike and rebecca, just looking at your live shot behind you, i mean, it's just amazing to see bourbon street open. a major crime scene here, wrapping up in less than 48 hours. what can you tell us about the debate or discussions that were had to open the street or to keep it closed? >> well, city officials really wanted to get bourbon street back open in time for kickoff for the sugar bowl this afternoon. you know, they kicked off here at 3 p.m. and they were open before that. they wanted these local businesses to get the benefit from all the tourists in town. and there's a

lot of people down here still. but i will say that everywhere you turn, you see a police officer, whether it's nypd or military police, there's a heavy presence of law enforcement down here. >> all right, rebecca castro live tonight in new orleans with the very latest. rebecca. thank you. as rebecca mentioned there, new orleans did host college football. sugar bowl today. the game between notre dame and georgia was supposed to happen yesterday, but was postponed because of the terror attack. now, today, security was stepped up at the superdome. and president biden did address the televised audience before the game. >> i'm glad the game is back on for today, but i'm not surprised because the spirit of new orleans can never be kept down. and that's also true of the spirit of america. we just have to remember who we are. we're the united states of america. there is nothing, nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together. >> the president also thanked first responders and extended condolences to the families of the victims. a moment of silence was held right before kickoff, coming up here at 630,

the. >> first day of trading in the new year, there was an early rally, but then stocks did start to stumble. the dow eventually lost nearly 152 points, the nasdaq slid 30 and the s&p 500 was off 13 points. shares of tesla were down 6% after it reported that last year marked its first annual drop in delivery numbers. a new prescription drug cap went into effect with the new year, limiting the amount medicare patients will have to pay out of pocket. the u.s. department of health and human services says as part of the inflation reduction act, people with

medicare part d will not pay more than $2,000 for all of their covered prescriptions for 2025. this comes after the same legislation capped insulin prices at $35 over the next few weeks. the department plans to choose 15 more high cost drugs for price negotiations. the first snow survey of the year is in the books, and it's been a solid start to the winter snowpack. as ktvu tom vacar reports, it's been an especially healthy season in the northern part of the sierra. >> what we have at this point is a mixed bag of positive news and a fair dose of future concern. california began snow surveys 115 years ago here at phillips station. six specific spots on this meadow have been measured and averaged for 84 years. today, this is just one of 265 snow courses, plus another 130 remote snow sensors blanketing the vast snowpack area. this combo of human surveys and

remote sensing gives water planners, farmers, 27 major water agencies and wildlife protectors excellent, accurate and critical information. >> our snowpack is about 110% of average to date, based off our automated snow sensor network. statewide and statewide, precipitation is about 115% of average right now. >> but north of interstate 80, where all the big mega reservoirs are, the snowpack is a whopping 160% of average on this date. one caution though there have been some years where rain and snow seasons started out gangbusters, only to see the storms mostly disappear after the first of the year. >> back in year 2022, we had 154% of average snowpack on this day in january, but it ended up on april 1st at 37% of average. so we definitely dried out. most of the storms that are predicted are going to be north of

california for the next two weeks. >> it's a little early, i think, to have have any concern for more than four decades, veteran meteorologist jan null has developed many aspects of weather forecasting and has taught legions of meteorologists the art and science of forecasting. having these fluctuations through the course of the year is, you know, is not unexpected. we're not even to the midway point of the rainfall year beyond two week forecasts. >> we're mostly guessing. >> looking farther on out, you know, talking about, you know, long range weather forecasting. you know, it's not there yet. >> that said, one thing is for sure, we'll need a progression of monthly storms to keep going because otherwise we will end up maybe similar under average by the end of the year. already, things are good enough that the water resources department has increased water deliveries to those with water rights from 5% up to 15% with just the water they already have on hand. tom

rose garden district of san jose. this is a big, beautiful area of low pressure. it's already providing ample rain showers right there right now in eureka, and a little bit of snow is in the offing for the mount shasta area. and this is going to continue to drop in a southerly fashion. here is our future cast. i love this computer model. we merge some different information all together so we can plan your day accordingly. and by 6:00 in the morning, we do have light to moderate rainfall around the north bay. then it slices across the golden gate bridge. here is the frontal system here. that's when you'll see the most impact. as far as accumulation of rain is concerned, the bulk of your afternoon is dry, albeit cloudy. we will see the sun shine in the afternoon hours and your saturday. don't cancel your golf plans. we do have partly cloudy conditions in the offing. okay, less than 2/10 of an inch of rain expected in san francisco. almost a half an inch in santa rosa, but we should see up to a full inch of rain in the highest

floral industry. >> there's no country right now in the world that's opening a wholesale flower market in a heavy, a heavy city like san francisco is. >> san francisco flower market executive director jenny taggart bowes says when a developer bought the old market in 2014, it was scary for a lot of flower businesses as this market is the main source for florals in northern california. >> luckily, the city of san francisco went to bat for our historic market and with the help of supervisor aaron peskin, we were able to renegotiate a deal where the market could move one time to a permanent location and give these these vendors a chance to survive a really expensive city in an industry where our margins are really short. >> customers from as far as lake tahoe depend on this market, and many were up before the sun to see the new space. >> they've been promising me this new market for ten years and so i had to come see it. >> it's 120,000ft!s with a brand

two news the san francisco 49ers getting ready for their final game of the season. >> the niners hit the practice field today with backup quarterback josh dobbs. he'll be starting for the first time this season due to brock purdy's elbow injury in monday's loss to the lions on sunday. the niners are playing the arizona cardinals, one of dobbs former teams. the game is sort of like an audition for the quarterback. he's going to be able to show his skills, of course, to the niners during real game experience. the teams around the league who might be looking for a new quarterback as well next season. >> it's always an audition, not only for the team that you're on, but for the other 31 teams. especially knowing my contract situation and being a free agent in march. so it's an opportunity to go out and show what i can do. here's a 40 niner in this scheme, as well as for other opportunities. so i kind of let. free agency, all that stuff work itself out when that time comes. but i'm just excited for the opportunity to get on the field and play. >> all right, so dobbs is going
