score. vlasic feeds tyler toffoli. excuse me with the nifty puck work and finds the back of the net. that's toffoli's 15th goal of the season, and sharks get their first home win since november 2 to 1. that wraps things up for sports tonight. our 11:00 news with mike starts now. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. >> and good evening once again everyone. i'm mike mibach right to some of our top stories tonight. new information this evening about the deadly terror attack in new orleans. the fbi says the army vet driving the white pickup down bourbon street, killing 14, was inspired by isis. agents also say he acted alone, reversing its initial position from just a day earlier. and it was a violent start to the new year in the city of san francisco. the city saw three shootings in the first two days. in one case, a family member tells us a man took his own life after shooting his girlfriend and their son. both are injured and expected to survive. also, a woman is under

arrest in connection to a double shooting that left one man dead this afternoon south of market, and the rain is headed back to the bay area. let's give you a live look right now at oakland's jack london square. while it does look calm this evening, those conditions will look a lot different for the morning commute. with that, we bring in our meteorologist, roberto gonzalez. it's been nice to have a few dry days, roberta, but rain tomorrow? >> yes, absolutely. and this system has actually been enjoyable to track because it's been spot on as far as its timing is concerned. so let's look at it together. this is it. isn't that a big, beautiful area of low pressure? it's just braced up against the state of california as far as northern california is concerned. you see that blob of moisture that's working its way to crescent city back in through eureka, all the way into mendocino. at this hour, we'll have some light snow atop mount shasta tomorrow morning. let's go ahead and look at the clouds as they filter in in the overnight hours. here's the leading edge of the system in the north bay. by 6:00 in the morning, official sun up is at
11:02 pm
725. not going to see it. this is the front carving a path through the central bay, streaming all the way into rio vista and fairfield. you see that other pretty ominous blob over the sacramento valley, and this stretches all the way across the san mateo coastline and then some clearing by the afternoon hours. so it's a fast moving system. i just tweaked these numbers here. we're going to see up to about a quarter of an inch of rain throughout most areas, except lesser amounts to the south, heavier amounts to the north. up to one full inch. mike coming up in a couple of minutes. i got to talk about the advisories and the warnings you need to know about for your friday. >> all right, roberta, we'll see you soon. thank you. tonight, jewish leaders in the east bay. they are angry and disappointed after finding a hateful message written just feet from a menorah along lake merritt in oakland, ktvu. zac sos joins us live tonight from oakland. and, zach, it's not the first time something like this has happened. >> no. certainly not. in fact, just last year during hanukkah, the menorah at lake merritt broken into pieces, thrown into the water. the menorah not
11:03 pm
damaged this year, but the hateful messages written nearby, once again casting a shadow over the celebrations. >> it's disrespectful. >> i'm bummed about how we got here. >> just some of the reactions to this hateful message scrawled feet from oakland's lake merritt menorah. >> i won't repeat it because i do not agree with the message. >> reina hernandez, who regularly uses the spot as an altar to those who lost their lives to violence in the area, first noticed the graffiti around 6:00 thursday morning. >> i saw it had been wiped once. you could still see the message. >> so hernandez adding a second coat of paint to cover it up. the graffiti, believed to have been left sometime overnight on the last night of hanukkah. >> i thought it was very disappointing more than anything, because you just cannot make such a general and broad statement about an entire people, about an entire nation. >> the menorah installed by the chabad jewish center of oakland. >> unfortunately, the oakland has become really the ground
11:04 pm
zero for this stuff. every, every week we have we have graffiti around the lake, all different anti-semitic stuff. >> last year, another center menorah installed in the same location was vandalized. on the sixth day of hanukkah, it was torn apart and some of its pieces thrown in the water. >> you have hatred going on there. i mean, you have a beautiful menorah. it symbolizes judaism, but it also symbolizes the freedom of religion. >> back at the lake, hernandez disheartened. >> we are all sacred. we are all mirrors of each other. we are all brothers and sisters, and we should start treating each other as such and remembering our humanity, which i honestly feel, unfortunately, has been lost. >> and as for the investigation into who left that graffiti behind, unclear where that stands right now. we have reached out to oakland police and will update you when we hear back. >> mike. hopefully the tips will come in for that police department. zach thank you. new at 11. two major california business groups are suing over a new state law that prohibits businesses from making employees
11:05 pm
attend mandatory meetings in the workplace that have to do with politics or religion. the california chamber of commerce and the state restaurant association filed a federal lawsuit over senate bill 399. both groups claim it violates the constitution, including the right to free speech. >> our fear is that the way the bill is written, and especially in light of already existing protections, not only in california law but our federal law that also exist, that effectively, businesses cannot talk about a wide range of topics without fear of litigation. >> now, several labor groups are in support of the new law, saying it's meant to free workers from intimidation from their bosses, especially if they're trying to form a union. >> we're not surprised. we anticipated there would be a lawsuit. i think they threatened it during the legislative process. but the reality is this is well settled law. you know, although we call it a prohibition on captive audience meetings, what this bill
11:06 pm
actually does, it's a not a restriction on employer speech. it's a restriction on their actions. >> attorney general rob bonta is representing the state in the lawsuit, but has not yet commented on the lawsuit. now to the latest out of new orleans, where bourbon street has reopened to the public after the deadly terror attack on new year's day. investigators say shamsudin jabar drove a pickup truck into a crowd, killing 14 people and injuring at least two dozen others when he went around a police barricade and then sped down the street. the fbi says the army vet from texas also planted improvised explosive devices in the french quarter, and today there was heavy security in the area. >> you see behind us is what we call hardening the target. so we have brought in heavy trucks. you will see when you go down. bourbon. >> the fbi now says jabar posted five videos on his facebook account hours before the attack,
11:07 pm
in which he proclaimed his support for isis. police searched his home in texas today, as well as a new orleans rental property where bomb making materials were found. we're also learning new developments in the cybertruck explosion outside the trump hotel in las vegas. authorities say they have identified the driver as 37 year old matthew berger of colorado springs. authorities say berger had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. they also located remnants of a military id and a passport inside the vehicle. u.s. defense officials say berger was an active duty u.s. army special forces, most recently a green beret who was on leave from germany at the time of the incident. vegas police addressed similarities between the truck explosion and the terror attack in new orleans, both men serving in the military. both were in afghanistan in 2009, but there is no evidence that they actually interacted. the two also used vehicles rented through the app turo. >> if these turn out to be simply similarities, very
11:08 pm
strange similarities to have, and so we're not prepared to rule in or rule out anything at this point. >> investigators say the explosion could have been far more devastating, had a different vehicle other than the cybertruck been involved, they say they believe the design and the build of the truck helped contain the majority of the blast. the sheriff todaylso outlined the route the driver took after renting the cybertruck in denver. this map showing his charging stops in colorado, new mexico and arizona before arriving to the las vegas strip. we're going to be monitoring this story along with the tragic attack in new orleans. you can stay up to date by downloading the fox local app to your phone and smart tv. on the heels of the deadly attack in new orleans, san francisco held its first first thursdays of the new year, where for many in attendance, safety was at the top of mind. ktvu bailey o'carroll has the report. >> thousands of people from across the bay area gathered in the heart of downtown san francisco for the annual first

thursday street fair. it marked one of the first big events in the city since a terrorist drove a truck through a packed bourbon street in new orleans on new year's day, killing 14 people. >> we talked about game plan, what we would do if we were separated. so we talked about that, and then we were like, do we come? >> do we stay home? >> and our decision was to come here tonight. >> this couple who drove from napa to be here said they felt safe. and these girls from the east bay echoed that message. >> things have been happening in a lot of different places lately that are really horrible. >> so i think it is positive when communities can come together in like a welcoming and comforting way. >> even vendors said they trust in the security and police in attendance. >> we always try to think positively. what happened there was extremely sad and depressing. over here. we're all about providing love through our food and so we hope you know all
11:10 pm
the organizers as well as security police officers to be around to provide us with a safe experience. >> there was not a huge police presence, and the only barrier between the cars on a busy mission street and pedestrians were orange cones and a few metal barriers. everyone we spoke to, though, agreed that safety is top of mind, but they don't want to live in a place of fear. >> i'm not one to allow things like that to prohibit me, but it is definitely top of mind. it's just, i guess, a leap of faith and hope that it's not my time because, you know, things happen. >> life's too short. [music] you know, we're not going to get tons of opportunities to experience things like this with, you know, a great group of people. >> we did talk to some vendors out here who did say that they expected tonight to be slower than first thursdays past because of the holidays and those wrapping up, but i can tell you, there were still thousands of people out here

when a small plane crashed right through the roof of a building and then burst into flames. this is taking place in orange county. at least 18 people were also hurt. ten had to be transported to the hospital. police have not yet said of those killed, were they in the plane or were they in the building? the crash happened not far from the fullerton airport at about 2:00 this afternoon. workers in the building said they did hear the explosion on the rooftop, and then rushed to evacuate. >> when we're working inside the building, we just saw a big blow up and the roof at the top of the roof and the ceiling, and then our boss shouts and says, evacuate the building. so everybody got to get out. he said, get out, get out. and i what i saw is a fire fireball at the top of the roof and the ceiling. you know, you just have to. >> the faa said the aircraft was a single engine, four seater.
11:14 pm
according to the flightaware tracking site, it crashed less than two minutes after taking off from the airport in fullerton. a man in washington state is in custody accused of threatening a family in a road rage incident just southwest of seattle. cops are on their way, but police sharing this video posted to social media showing three neighbors who jumped in and disarmed the suspect. now, police say it all started when a woman with an eight and six year old in the back of the back seat of her vehicle pulled over to let an ambulance pass by. well, after the woman tried to get back on the road, a 33 year old man from tacoma apparently took offense and cut the woman off and then got out and threatened the victims with a loaded nine millimeter handgun. that's when the three bystanders jumped in to help. >> although the citizen who was walking down the road took very, very commendable action, some call him a hero. we as a police department, you know, we don't necessarily recommend people getting directly involved.
11:15 pm
>> well, the incident happened over the weekend, just one day after another road rage incident nearby when a couple was shot at as they were driving home from the airport. and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs 7:00 monday through friday, or you can find around the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. san francisco mayor elect daniel lurie announcing his pick for a newly created position in his administration, san francisco police veteran paul yep has been named the city's first ever chief of public safety. yep will not only work with the police department, but will serve as point person with other public safety partners. the city ended last year with crime far lower than the year before, but that can be of little solace to residents and victims. yep. wants to make sure he changes that main goal as chief of public safety is to ensure that the people that live, play and work in san francisco feel safe.
11:16 pm
>> statistics are very important. numbers are important. they tell one story, but if people don't feel safe, then we really haven't accomplished what we need to accomplish. >> yep. served with the san francisco police department for more than 28 years as captain at central, northern and richmond stations. in his new role, he will work with the sheriff's office, district attorney, fire department, public defender, as well as probation. mayor elect daniel lurie's inauguration will take place wednesday morning at 1130 at city hall. the public is invited to attend, although seating will be limited to ticketed guests. the mayor elect will later appear at a chinatown night market and community festival that evening. lurie will also attend a celebration at far east cafe, which is the neighborhood's last remaining large banquet hall. new at 11 rideshare company lyft is renewing its lease at its headquarters in san francisco, but this next agreement is for a smaller amount of space. in a statement shared with ktvu, lyft says they are leasing 170,000fts at their barrie street office right next to oracle park. now,
11:17 pm
this is compared to their previous lease of 419,000ft!s. much smaller, with some of that offered for subleasing. back in september, lyft laid off 1% of its workforce and cut its workforce by nearly a quarter in 2023. as women's sports paves the way for a new fan base right here in the bay area, a business owner wants to make sure they all have a place to call home. we take a closer look at the new bar coming to san francisco, and the first sierra snow survey of the year yields some promising results. coming up, what we're seeing when it comes to the state's water supply so far this winter season, and just how much snow will fall in tahoe, and when you will hear the raindrops on your rooftops. >> your bay area forecast is coming up after thi fa

meteorologists roberta gonzalez. the new year is here. and just like that, the rain is back. >> how about that? and it's welcomed as well. indeed. the soil saturated already, so we should see a little bit of runoff in the northern portion of the bay area. plus we're going to pick up some gusty winds as well. do not park under any trees. look at this big brand new area of low pressure. it is now providing ample rain showers anywhere from about portland, oregon all the way to crescent city. well into eureka making tracks into mendocino county. let's track our forecast. and here we go overnight. we become mostly cloudy. you see the leading edge of the light precipitation right there around napa, all the way into san rafael, including marin city and larkspur. and then it goes over the golden gate bridge. it encompasses the central bay by 10:00 in the morning hour. and when you see these pockets of yellow and even orange, that's more copious amounts of precipitation
11:21 pm
falling. so more of a moderate to heavy downpour. that front slices out of the area. it drops to the south and digs to the east and behind it here a pool of some cooler air. so gusty winds 20 to 30. that occasional gust from time to time. and but for the most part, we're clearing out in the afternoon hours. we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy during the afternoon into the evening. and now i have tweaked the potential rainfall totals, anywhere from about a 10th of an inch to a quarter of an inch across the santa clara valley, up to a quarter of an inch throughout most of the bay area, half an inch central bay and up to a full inch of rain showers right around the north bay. so what does this mean for the greater lake tahoe area? national weather service has issued a winter storm warning, in effect beginning at 7:00 tomorrow morning through 10 p.m. up to 12in of snow above 8000ft, with gusty winds up to 100mph. there will be holds on some ski lifts. meanwhile, right there around lake level at 6500ft, you have
11:22 pm
an advisory for up to six inches of snow. so now we go from the mountains to the sea, where we have a high surf advisory in place tomorrow all the way through the weekend with up to 18 foot waves. do not turn your back to an angry ocean. christopher thor, thank you so much for that beautiful view. again, we're talking about so far we've had 25in of rain. mike in the north bay. we're anticipating at least an inch more in that particular area. lesser amounts to the south. >> great start to the winter season, especially up in tahoe. and with that, the first sierra snow survey of the year is showing indeed snowpack close to average for the first time of the year. the state department of water resources measured the snow depth at phillips station near lake tahoe at 24in, and that equates to nine inches of water content, or 91% of average for the state. megan mason from the central sierra snow lab joined us earlier on the four. >> we have a denser snowpack right now, so we do have a lot
11:23 pm
more water in the snow. we'd like to keep it frozen and to stay throughout the season. we have had a little bit of discharge or increase in stream flow after the rain that came in after christmas, but i think we will hold on to that. >> the snow survey very critical for water managers to forecast how much of the snow melt will eventually flow into rivers and reservoirs, to provide water for residents and farms up and down the state of california. all right. here's a look at the stories trending tonight right there@ktvu.com. one of our top stories tonight. firefighters put out a large fire at a gas station in antioch. no injuries reported. the cause of the fire? still not known in san francisco. the flower mart had its grand reopening in potrero hill. it had been located south of market for nearly 60 years, and the u.s. census bureau says california's population grew slightly last year, the second straight year the state's population has increased. you can find these stories and a lot more, all of it right
