5:01 am
they're still around a 10th of an inch, quarter of an inch to upwards of maybe a half to three quarters. much cooler. this deep little system right there that will usher in only 50s on the temps here today. so cloudy morning rain arrives. cooler. heaviest will be to the north and the breeze picks up and temperatures 50s pretty close to where they should be to even slightly below. all right, sal is here. i hope it's friday light at 5 a.m. >> it should be. yeah, that's for sure. we don't have anything going on, steve, which is perfect. let's go out and take a look at the macarthur maze. it looks pretty good on the east shore freeway coming down to the macarthur maze. there have been no major issues. and if you were driving on 580, it also looks good through oakland. when you get to the bay bridge, it is light. and again, it is a nice time to be driving. if you have to get somewhere, just don't go too fast. i did see chp on my way in and they're out there, so just keep it down. 501 let's go back to the desk. >> thank you sal. topping our news this morning, jewish

leaders in oakland are speaking out this morning after finding a hateful message written just feet from a menorah along lake merritt. the jewish community relations council says the graffiti was drawn on the last night of hanukkah. as ktvu zac sos reports, it's not the first time something like this has happened. >> it's disrespectful. i'm bummed about how we got here. >> just some of the reactions to this hateful message scrawled feet from oakland's lake merritt menorah. >> i won't repeat it because i do not agree with the message. >> reina hernandez, who regularly uses the spot as an altar to those who lost their lives to violence in the area, first noticed the graffiti around 6:00 thursday morning. >> i saw it had been wiped once. you could still see the message. >> so hernandez is adding a second coat of paint to cover it up. the graffiti, believed to have been left sometime overnight on the last night of hanukkah. >> i thought it was very disappointing more than anything, because you just cannot make such a general and broad statement about an entire people, about an entire nation.
5:03 am
>> the menorah installed by the chabad jewish center of oakland. >> unfortunately, oakland has become really the ground zero for this stuff. every, every week we have we have graffiti around the lake, all different anti-semitic stuff. >> last year, another center menorah installed in the same location was vandalized. on the sixth day of hanukkah, it was torn apart and some of its pieces thrown in the water. >> you have hatred going on there. you have a beautiful menorah. it symbolizes judaism, but it also symbolizes the freedom of religion. >> back at the lake, hernandez disheartened. >> we are all sacred. we are all mirrors of each other. we are all brothers and sisters, and we should start treating each other as such and remembering our humanity, which i honestly feel, unfortunately, has been lost. >> zac sos ktvu fox two news. >> all right, zach, thank you. time now 503. well, bourbon street in new orleans has reopened after the new year's day terror attack, but it remains a focus of healing after
5:04 am
14 people were killed in that attack, 35 others were hurt. >> the coroner in new orleans says it will take some time before all of the victims are identified. but we are getting some new information right now. the fbi is still looking for a motive. along bourbon street, people continue to build memorials to honor the lives lost. volunteers are also coming together to help donate blood for local hospitals. >> life isn't guaranteed to none of us. >> the terrorists don't want us to do anything. >> the fbi says the suspect was an army veteran from texas who was inspired by isis. the suspect showed his support for isis on social media before the attack. the flag of the islamic state group was also discovered on his truck. now, even though the fbi determined the attacker acted alone, security remained heightened in new orleans as the sugar bowl game was held a day late. the city's mayor says officials are prepared to host the super bowl next month with added security. >> our time is 504. even though the names haven't been released
5:05 am
of the people killed in the attack, their families and friends have started sharing their stories. one of the victims was 27 year old tiger beck. beck played football at princeton university before graduating in 2021. his head coach says beck was a fierce competitor, a beloved teammate and a caring friend. and this photo was shared by auburn university on social media of drew dauphin, who was killed in the new year's day attack. auburn university's president christopher roberts, says dauphin graduated in 2023 and according to his linkedin profile, he worked as a supplier process engineer in birmingham, alabama. also, we've learned that one of the injured was a student at san diego state. >> musicians in new orleans were quick to take to bourbon street to remind the community of their resilience. [music] a brass band set up on the corner of bourbon and iberville.
5:06 am
it's located not far from the location of the deadly attack. live music is a common sight in new orleans, but it's taking on a new significance for the community after such a huge tragedy. >> life isn't guaranteed to none of us, so the biggest thing is just trying to live this moment to the to the fullest and you know, that's obviously we just got to keep on going forward. >> trombone player and new orleans resident jonas green says it was important for his band to be out on bourbon street the day after the attack, playing on the same block. it's a way to try to help people move forward and see the area as much more than a place of tragedy. >> time is now 506 following the deadly attack in new orleans, san francisco held its first first thursday's event of the new year. that's where many of the people who were there were concerned about safety. ktvu bailey o'carroll was there as well, and tells us about the efforts to keep everybody safe. >> thousands of people from across the bay area gathered in

the heart of downtown san francisco for the annual first thursday street fair. it marked one of the first big events in the city since a terrorist drove a truck through a packed bourbon street in new orleans on new year's day, killing 14 people. >> we talked about game plan, what we would do if we were separated. [music] so we talked about that, and then we were like, do we come? >> do we stay home? >> and our decision was to come here tonight. >> this couple who drove from napa to be here said they felt safe. and these girls from the east bay echoed that message. >> things have been happening in a lot of different places lately that are really horrible. so i think it is positive when communities can come together in like a welcoming and comforting way. >> even vendors said they trust in the security and police in attendance. >> we always try to think positively. what happened there was extremely sad and depressing. over here. we're all

about providing love to our food and so we hope you know all the organizers as well as security police officers, to be around to provide us with a safe experience. >> there was not a huge police presence, and the only barrier between the cars on a busy mission street and pedestrians were orange cones and a few metal barriers. everyone we spoke to, though, agreed that safety is top of mind, but they don't want to live in a place of fear. >> i'm not one to allow things like that to prohibit me, but it is definitely top of mind. it's just, i guess, a leap of faith and hope that it's not my time because, you know, things happen. >> life's too short. [music] you know, we're not going to get tons of opportunities to experience things like this with, you know, a great group of people. >> we did talk to some vendors out here who did say that they expected tonight to be slower than first thursdays past because of the holidays and those wrapping up, but i can
5:09 am
tell you, there were still thousands of people out here celebrating the first first thursday of the new year in san francisco. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, rain has started for some to the north. it's been a tall order, though. in southern california, it's a division there between wet and hardly any rain at all for northern california to southern california. maybe some activity picking up in about the next 7 to 10 days in southern california. but if you're north crescent city, redding and santa rosa, it's been really good. if you're south santa barbara, los angeles and san diego, it has been woeful. what about the sierra snowpack? well, pretty much in line north. good. central, not bad. southern and all the way down to southern sierra is not so good, but 108% of statewide average for this time of year. there's more snow on the way, at least for the sierra here. anywhere from looks like 7 to 10, maybe 12 around lake level. and a winter storm warning is out at 7 a.m. this morning. goes through tonight.
5:10 am
so if you're going up there 40s on the temps south wind means warmer there for some until the snow levels start to drop. that will be as we head towards later this afternoon and tonight. our system is lining up. took a while to get here. trimmed back on some of the amounts. picked up a little bit on others to the south, but i think they'll be a little more than that. santa rosa, i think, will get over a half inch of rain, and you can see there's a pretty good little breeze kicking up its heels. for a few. it will turn more southerly or southeast here, southwest for some 40s 50s. the lows because of the cloud cover are up. after this system goes by. there's a pretty good cold air coming in behind that. our temps will cool off, but it also looks dry. i mean really dry here unless you're in southern california. so next week is favoring a dry pattern. so one last system in the old pipeline that will be today. highs will only be in the 50s, but rain returns this morning may take a while to get areas to the south, but a dry pattern likely next week. even though the weekend will have a lot of clouds, it does not look like any big time rain after this system for a while. >> all right. thank you steve.

are emerging in the cybertruck explosion outside the trump hotel in las vegas. authorities identified the driver as a 37 year old army green beret on leave. now he's reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before the explosion. u.s. defense officials confirm he was active duty in the u.s. army special forces. investigators say the explosion could have been much worse if not for the cybertruck's design, which actually helped contain much of the blast. >> jewish leaders in oakland are condemning a hateful anti-israel message found near a menorah at lake merritt. the graffiti was discovered on the final night of hanukkah, and it's not the first time this kind of vandalism has been found. last year, another menorah in the same location was destroyed. so far, no arrests have been made in this latest incident. and the new year in san francisco started violently with three shootings in two days. on thursday, a man died by
5:15 am
suicide after critically injuring his girlfriend and wounding a young child. both are expected to survive. in separate incidents, a woman was arrested for a shooting on bryant street. two victims suffered non-life threatening injuries. also, a suspect was arrested for a new year's day homicide. >> the chp is investigating a head on collision in the south bay that killed a pregnant woman. it happened at 6:30 p.m. on new year's day in gilroy. the chp says a suspected drunk driver and a pickup truck was speeding east on leavesley road. the truck crossed into the westbound lane and hit an suv, where a 29 year old pregnant woman was riding as a passenger. she was killed. we have not received any information about her unborn child. 50 year old jesus morris of mountain view was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. >> our time is now 515. two people were killed in fullerton. 18 others were hurt after a small plane crashed through the roof of a commercial building in
5:16 am
orange county. it happened yesterday afternoon near the fullerton airport, about 25 miles south of downtown los angeles. look at the pictures. federal investigators say the pilot made an urgent call to the air tower shortly after taking off, asking to immediately turn back to the airport. >> the tower controller then cleared the pilot to land on any runway. the airplane then appeared to make a 180 degree left turn, and flew the left downwind for runway two four, and ultimately crashed about 1000ft short of runway two four, struck a furniture building and immediately caught fire. >> authorities say the two people who died were on the plane. the injured were inside that building. the ntsb is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. >> the fbi has released a new video of the person who they believe planted pipe bombs in washington, d.c, the night before the capitol riot in 2021.
5:17 am
surveillance video shows the person sitting on a bench outside the democratic national committee headquarters before placing the bomb. a second bomb was planted at the republican national committee headquarters. they did not go off and no one was hurt, but a $500,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. congress begins its new term this mornin, with republicans in full control of both the house and the senate for the first time since 2019. in just a few hours, house republicans are scheduled to take their crucial leadership vote. president elect trump has endorsed house speaker mike johnson to remain in his powerful post on capitol hill. but some conservative republicans could derail johnson's efforts to keep his job. johnson points out the republicans have a razor thin majority in the house. >> the numbers game we have the smallest margin in u.s. history. we'll have a margin of probably two votes, so can only afford to lose 1 or 2. but i think we'll get it done. >> johnson's far right critics have said he has not done enough
5:18 am
to reduce government spending in his recently proposed spending bill. president elect trump argues johnson is the best leader to carry out his conservative reforms on capitol hill. >> our time now 517. santa cruz this weekend will welcome back visitors to its famous wharf, a fixture of that community. almost two weeks after it was partially destroyed by powerful waves. now the wharf has been closed since december 23rd, when a 150 foot section of the of the wharf collapsed because of the high surf. the city says the wharf has been deemed safe now to reopen based on engineering tests. it will reopen tomorrow morning. >> the first snow survey of the year is showing a solid start to the winter snowpack. for the last 84 years. it's a six. specific spots at phillips station are measured and averaged. surveyors have found this year's snowpack is higher than average by 10 to 60%. the surveyors warn, though in the past, some winters started off strong with a lot of rain and
5:19 am
snow, but then had a dry rest of the season. >> back in year 2022, we had 154% of average snowpack. on this day in january, but it ended up on april 1st at 37% of average. so we definitely dried out. >> now, the experts say we will need more monthly storms to keep our water levels above average. since most of the state's water supply does come from the sierra snowpack, researchers use both information from human surveys and sensors to gather information to pass on to water planners, farmers and water and wildlife agencies. we turn to steve paulson. >> yeah, of course we do. >> to let us know the major reservoirs are doing quite well. they are tv. tommy. tommy vacar mentioned that yesterday. >> does it look like we're going to continue to have a wet winter, at least so far? >> well, i'm always optimistic. okay, good. but i think after today's system, we may go for about 2 or 3 weeks without much. it's kind of the way it's looking here. remember, shasta gets most of their water from
5:20 am
rain, so they've had a lot of rain up there. for the sierra snowpack, as we've been mentioning, it's all about areas to the north, not so much to the south central sierra, which includes tahoe. it's pretty close. they'll add to that. they'll probably bump up to about 97, 98% after today's system, but for the statewide average, 108. so again, three months to go, three and a half. system is making its move. it's inching closer. and this looks like a rain for all. eventually it may take a while to get south per usual here, but our system will spread pretty good. rain i think about a half inch to an inch, certainly up towards the russian river. some of the amounts have been trimmed back a little bit. i'm not surprised, but santa rosa, probably about a half inch, but a third to a half a quarter should cover it. although for the sierra you're looking at 7 to 10in of snow being forecast. so a winter storm warning has been posted. snow levels start off pretty high, probably around lake level, and then really start to drop as we head towards this afternoon and also tonight. so if you're going up there earlier you go the better or wait until tomorrow. 46 tahoe, 43 truckee.
5:21 am
that's because you get a strong south wind. that'll do it. reno at 41. we have 40s and 50s on. the temps probably won't change at all because of the cloud cover and a little bit of a southerly breeze. some much cooler air is coming in behind that. i'll drop in what's called the. you can see the dip in the jet stream that's going to come over and keep our temps in the 50s here for almost everyone. one last system in the pipeline until the pattern changes. rain returns this morning and then we are looking for a drier pattern likely next week. could actually be more towards southern california and arizona depending on how the pattern sets up, but it won't be for us, that's for sure. and you can see on the extended outlook there is nothing showing up here locally. i mean, that's that's about it for now. but again, things can always change. so laughter in the rain today, dave. cloudy morning rain north rain arrives much cooler. that breeze will pick up, especially once the front goes through. 50 on the thames. >> all right, steve. thank you. time is 521. governor newsom getting ready to lay out his vision for californians. we have details of what we're finding out about his state of the state address, and a dream come true

statewide average. good news is there's more snow on the way in the next 24 hours for lake tahoe and the central sierra, or anywhere from 7 to 10in, maybe a foot possible. now, snow level is going to go up around lake level here for a while, and then it will start to drop later this afternoon into tonight. but 6 to 12 looks to be likely there. you can see why south wind in advance of that. so it's 40 for tahoe and truckee. so if you're going now it's more about rain. if you're going you know tomorrow you'll be fine. but for later today that snow will really drop pretty fast. 40s 50s on the temps. cloud cover i don't think will change too much on that. it's a pretty cool system here and temperatures will follow suit. one last system here in the pipeline until the pattern changes and it may be a while here, unfortunately. so rain returns this morning and then after that dry pattern likely next week, maybe a windy pattern. and depending on what sets up. some of the forecast models are dropping a low either into arizona or southern california. but laughter in the rain today. it will arrive for all eventually and 50s on the temps. there will be cloud cover kind of streaming across for the
5:41 am
weekend, but after that, then next week looks dry, maybe even windy and warmer for us. >> all right. thank you steve. are you looking to detox after the holidays will dry? january may be a great way to kick off the new year. we're going to take a closer look

>> our fear is that the way the bill is written, and especially in light of already existing protections, not only in california law but federal law that also exist, that effectively businesses cannot talk about a wide range of topics without fear of litigation. >> now, several labor groups are supporting the new law. they say it's meant to free employees from being intimidated by their bosses, particularly if they're trying to form a union. >> we're not surprised. we anticipated there would be a lawsuit. i think they threatened it during the legislative process. but the reality is this is well settled law. you know, although we call it a prohibition on captive audience meetings, what this bill actually does, it's a not a restriction on employer speech. it's a restriction on their actions. >> now, attorney general rob bonta is representing the state of california in the lawsuit. he has made no comment yet on the pending litigation. >> rideshare company lyft is renewing its lease at its

5:50 am
to be another light day if you're going to the office, so to speak. you might have a little company, but not a lot. the only problem is if people start going fast and it's raining, we may have some crashes, so we're going to keep an eye on that for you. 549 let's bring steve in to talk about today's weather, sal. >> thank you sir. we'll get to it. our system is on the way, as you just mentioned here from about the bay bridge, marin county north. it will eventually get east and south after this system, though, we may be looking at a stretch there. some drier weather, that's for sure. everything is pointing in that direction. i'm not surprised. after what we had in december, which was quite rainy for many, especially north, no doubt about it, but this system looks pretty good. i'd say a quarter of an inch to three quarters should cover most of it. the heaviest amounts. what's new about marin county? north less to the east and also the south. we've seen this just going all the way back to november in the mountains, anywhere from 7 to 10in of snow forecast. so winter storm warning is out. that will go and snow levels start off pretty high, then drop later this afternoon. 40s 50s on the temps.
5:51 am
this is also a cool system. let me put it in. there you go. a little dip in the jet stream right there is going to equal a much cooler day, so highs will only be in the 50s. one last system in the old pipeline until the pattern changes. and you know, some indications are it's going to change for a while here. rain returns this morning into late morning early afternoon, then a much cooler pattern today. a lot of clouds on the weekend, but it does look like a dry pattern taking us into next week. laughter in the rain. rain arrives for all here. much cooler. the wind will pick up out of the northwest once that front goes through 50s on the temps. that is it. and mostly cloudy. partly cloudy on the weekend. then it looks like it clears out everything. going as far as wind could give us a breezy, blustery pattern tuesday and wednesday. >> all right steve, thank you. time is 551. a lawsuit in santa clara county is heating up over recipes. new at 6:00, the restaurant that sells an upcoming rival over what's called paella, piracy.

lot of attention during the holidays didn't get any foot traffic, but that's all changing. tomorrow we'll take you back to december 23rd. our latest round of winter storms battered the pier. huge waves crashing into the wharf hard enough to break off a 150 foot chunk and falling into the ocean. a bathroom, building, a crane, some other machinery all swept into the sea. the city of santa cruz hired engineers and consultants all to check out the damage, and according to a sonar and engineering report, the structural integrity of the wharf is safe, meaning there is no worry of any more collapse and any debris in the ocean, including three large construction machines, is all a safe distance away from the pier. that report, filed by a third party engineering firm and reviewed by the u.s. coast guard, all determining the wharf is safe to reopen. now. we still have not seen any repairs to the wharf at this point, and at the very end of it, that damaged part that will still remain closed off, but a majority of

6:13 am
to rejoin the joint terrorism task force after these recent attacks. the sfpd says they are a reminder the threat of terrorism on u.s. soil remains very real, and departments need to be working together to stop these events from happening. the department withdrew from the fbi task force in 2017 after the trump white house travel ban, and concerns that local police would be asked to participate. now, the suspects behind the new orleans and the las vegas attacks were u.s. born american service members. however, president elect trump blamed the incidents on the current administration's open border policy. overnight, he posted on truth social platform, criticizing the president and blaming people crossing the border into the u.s. joining us now to talk about the this week's events. we're joined by peter lopez, director of the project on ethics and political communication at the george washington university. professor, thank you again for joining us this morning. always a pleasure. certainly, this could be the beginning of
6:14 am
something. this is a concern, as we have the president elect coming back into office, is that there has been a lot of rhetoric and need for fact checking when we have somebody who is putting things out on social media and perhaps false information. what can we do to ensure that this information is correct, and what can be done and what should be done? >> you raise a really important point, and i think the first and most important thing we can do is what you're doing right now, which is calling trump's claims out for being false. it's simply not true that these were migrants. i mean, what these. the attacks have in common in new orleans and in front of the trump hotel in las vegas, where they're both u.s. military veterans. so the most important thing to do is what you're doing. the second is, on the rest of us, if we see something happening, we want to reach for an explanation. right. something tragic happens. we go, why does this happen? right. and we fill in an easy explanation, and we need to check ourselves and make sure that our easy explanation
6:15 am
is an accurate explanation, that we're not jumping to unfair conclusions. >> as a professor, as a political science professor, and involved in politics, should there. shouldn't there be some kind of checks and balances in terms of i mean, the president of the united states is certainly arguably the most powerful leader in the world. so should there be some sort of committee as opposed to just one person putting something out on social media? >> you know, i think it's up to each of us as individuals, as citizens, to be responsible when we talk about politics or political communication or world events. that's true of the president, united states. it's true of me. it's true of my students. i don't want a committee vetting what i say about politics. i'm not sure we should have a committee vetting what the president says. but i do think that people like the president of the united states have a higher standard. they have to reach a higher ethical standard when making claims, especially profoundly dangerous claims that are fundamentally racist, that put people at risk, that mislead the american public, and that can help drive policy. it's just irresponsible.
6:16 am
we all need to be responsible. and those with a big platform, a big microphone like the president, united states need to be especially responsible. >> what do you think about as we head into this new presidency, new year, about the concerns about a possibly a travel ban being instituted again? >> you know, i think that's a real concern. i think that, you know, a lot of people around the world, and certainly here in the us, are worried that the president will act first, speak second, and then research and fact check third, fifth or maybe not. not at all. you know, we're going to have reactionary policies, right. and i think a lot of people are legitimately concerned about that. we're concerned at universities around the country what's happening to our our foreign students. we have students from all over the world who are asking what's happening. and i know that's true in the bay area, where you rely very heavily on people from all over the world to do tasks from, you know, science to cleaning. you know, what does this mean for them and for their families? i'm nervous, and i
6:17 am
think we're right to be nervous. >> okay. we appreciate your information, professor peter loesch at the george washington university, thank you for joining us and helping us make sure that we are doing this fact checking. thank you. >> thanks for all you're doing. >> all right. our time now. 616. jewish leaders in oakland are very upset after finding a hateful message written within a few feet of a menorah along lake merritt, and they say it's not the first time something like this has happened. the anti-israel message was found wednesday on the concrete base near a menorah on the last night of hanukkah. the menorah is belong to chabad jewish center of oakland, which serves all jewish people regardless of their background or affiliation. >> the oakland h become really the ground zero for this stuff. every, every week we have we have graffiti around the lake. >> we are all mirrors of each other. we are all brothers and sisters and we should start treating each other as such.

6:32 am
the morning, and then after that goes through the front, it will be a cooler, breezy pattern in the afternoon. not a lot here, but maybe a quarter of an inch to three quarters. should cover the spread here, but eventually everyone will get in on this system. and boy, there's a lot of cool air coming in behind this for tonight. so laughter in the rain here, but rain to the north. already arriving to the south later. a much cooler pattern. highs only in the 50s. all right. sal is here. still good? >> yeah, yeah, it looks looks pretty good there, steve. looks like a one way ticket to work out there. northbound 880. looks very nice. and southbound 880 looks okay. it's a little bit of rain, but not much. we haven't had a lot of crashes, which is good. no major issues here. and if you're driving on 880 south and north, it looks all right. there is a crash reported southbound 101 at willow that's on the shoulder. but just be aware it's there. 632 let's get back to the desk. >> thank you. sal. well, the new year is getting off to a violent

start in san francisco. >> san francisco police are busy investigating three separate shootings during the first two days of 2025. ktvu is andre senior in the studio with us now with the details about this, andre, especially after the flip from last year to yeah, yeah, that is a rough one. >> rough one for sure. the city of san francisco has just wrapped up a year where police had reported the lowest number of homicides since 1960. there were 34 killings in the city in 2024. but police are now reporting this new year is off to a bad start here. the three shootings in san francisco during the first two days of the year involve one that is especially tragic here. police say it involved a man who took his own life after wounding his girlfriend and their toddler son. that happened yesterday morning near alemany boulevard. the suspected shooter's father showed up at the scene shortly after the gunfire. >> gavin newsom antoine thomas.
6:34 am
he took his took his life for, for some strange reason. i didn't i didn't get a chance to make it here on time to stop it. and now he's gone. the baby was a year and a half year and a half year and a half. so yeah, she's going to have to have to grow up without the dad and everything. >> she's going to have to grow up without a dad. >> pretty tough to watch. the toddler wounded in the shooting is, though, expected to survive. the woman is being treated for life threatening injuries. in another incident, police have a suspect in custody for a homicide in the city shortly after midnight on new year's day. that gunfire the deadly gunfire erupted near the intersection of venice and 17th street. >> right after the shooting. the suspect fled from the area in an suv. a few hours later, officers located the suspect vehicle in the area of bayshore and geneva and were able to take the suspect into custody without
6:35 am
further incident. >> police are also investigating a third shooting in the city that took place yesterday. officers arrested a woman accused of wounding two people in the south of market area. officers say they captured the woman, who they say pulled the trigger a few hours later in the city's tenderloin to police. there are no say. there are no ties to these three shootings. they're not all tied together. we'll keep following the stories for you, dave. >> all right, andre, thank you. time now. 634. new details about the man who was behind the cyber truck explosion outside of the trump hotel in las vegas. authorities have identified 37 year old matthew berger of colorado springs, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound before the explosion. u.s. defense officials say he was an active duty member of the u.s. army special forces, most recently a green beret who was on leave from germany at the time. police in vegas say there were several similarities between that explosion and the terror attack in new orleans,
6:36 am
but investigators don't think they're connected. >> if these turn out to be simply similarities, very strange similarities to have. and so we're not prepared to rule in or rule out anything at this point. >> now, investigators say the explosion could have been a lot worse if he had used a different vehicle other than a tesla cybertruck in that attack. they believe the design and the build of the truck helped to contain contain most of that explosion. >> suspects behind the new orleans and las vegas attacks were u.s. born american service members. however, president elect trump blamed the incidents on the current administration's open border policy. just a short time ago, we interviewed peter lopez, director of the project on ethics and political communication at the george washington university. he talked about the political ramifications from this week's high profile attacks and the incoming trump administration. >> you know, a lot of people around the world, and certainly here in the us, are worried that
6:37 am
the president will act first, speak second, and then research and fact check third, fifth, or maybe not. not at all. you know, we're going to have reactionary policies, right. and i think a lot of people are legitimately concerned about that. >> professor lopez says colleges are concerned about their foreign students, and tough immigration policies could drastically affect bay area tech companies that rely on foreign workers. >> our time now. 636 some students who were applying for financial aid through fafsa and now have a new concern this morning, they're worried about putting their undocumented parents at risk of being deported. the students say the fear comes as president elect donald trump has promised mass deportations for people living in the u.s. illegally. now, college advisers can't guarantee that federal aid form will not be a risk. fafsa applications asked for the parents social security numbers and those without social security numbers will have to go through extra steps on the application, which
6:38 am
could draw some unwanted attention. >> congress begins its new term this morning, with republicans in control of both the house and the senate for the first time since 2019. now, in just a few hours, house republicans are scheduled to take their crucial leadership vote. president elect trump has endorsed house speaker mike johnson to remain in his powerful post on capitol hill, but some conservative republicans could derail johnson's efforts to keep his job. johnson points out the republican majority is razor thin in the house. >> it's a numbers game. we have the smallest margin in u.s. history. we'll have a margin of probably two votes, so can only afford to lose 1 or 2. but i think we'll get it done. >> johnson's far right critics have said he has not done enough to reduce government spending. president elect trump argues johnson is the best leader to carry out his conservative reforms on capitol hill. >> our time now. 638 well, tomorrow the santa cruz wharf is set to reopen after being damaged and closed because of
6:39 am
that storm damage. for about ten days, city officials roped off the wharf. they blocked access to all parts of the pier, their nearby businesses had zero foot traffic during what's normally a busy time of the year. for them. the wharf has not been repaired yet, but most of the pier will reopen tomorrow morning. >> all right. that was such a crazy video. yeah, one of the one of the craziest we've all seen. sal. >> pam, earlier when you talked about pbr, i thought we were having beer for breakfast. >> we do have pizza over there. thanks to tim, our floor director. >> i know, i know what goes with pizza. pbr, but not the pacific bull riding, whatever that is. but anyway, good morning everyone. there's not a lot going on. as you might you might be able to tell. and we're chatting about beer, but right now it has been and this week has been a light week. i think a lot of people have time off, but i don't think it's going to last. i think by next week, this
6:40 am
time we're going to see more and more people. maybe not on friday, but monday through thursday as they start coming back and then the week after that is even more crowded. so just mentally prepare. it's not going to look like this looks pretty good out there right now. no major problems on the bay bridge getting on the span or interstate 880. it it is looking very, very good. speaking of looking good, steve, how do you do it? >> sal? those days are long over though. you know, i read your book. speaking of a pbr, though, i'm a brewmaster's worst nightmare. i'm happy with a pbr. you? >> me too. yes we could. hey, you know what? i don't know if you remember this, but you and i have had pbr together. >> well, yes, i do, several occasions. i shouldn't say this. there was. i saw it on twitter x 99 pack of pbr 99 pack, 99 pack, 99 pack. i'll show you the. >> i'll show you the god bless america. >> god bless america for that. okay, what do you put in the
6:41 am
back of the car? 99 pack of pbr. all right, here we go. our system is producing rain, right, mr. clark? yes, he already went out and said it's raining here at the mothership. heaviest rain will be to the north, but it's already started, so about a quarter of an inch to three quarters, i think should cover it. you know, sometimes casadero is, you know, the outlier there with a little bit more. as far as snow goes. northern, it's all good. central. not bad southern. and we are at 100% 108 statewide average, with more on the way up in tahoe, you can see anywhere from 7 to 9 being to ten. excuse me at kirkwood being forecast. so we'll take it because i don't think there's much after this for a while. the snow level in the morning will be 6000ft by this afternoon. this evening it will drop to 4000ft. so if you're going up early, go now. go fast now or wait until tomorrow. 40s 50s on the temps there. i don't think these are changing at all. that's a cool little trough what we call coming in behind that. so temps are going to drop here. one last system in the current pattern, which we've had since most about
6:42 am
halfway through december. rain returns this morning then spreads late morning early afternoon, but it looks like a dry pattern. likely next week and we'll get a lot of weekend clouds, but it does not look like much in the way of any rain. laughter in the rain today rain arrives for all. much cooler wind will pick up later today. 50s on the temps that is it. mostly cloudy. partly sunny on the weekend and then maybe windy as systems dig into southern california early next week. >> thank you steve. budget cuts are set to impact the city of oakland starting next week. the agency is closing their doors to address a $129 million

6:47 am
together to stop these events from happening. the department withdrew from the fbi task force in 2017 after the trump white house travel ban, and concerns that local police would be asked to participate. >> our time now. 646. two major california business groups are suing over a new state law that bans businesses from making employees go to mandatory meetings in the workplace involving politics or religion. the california chamber of commerce and the state restaurant association filed a federal lawsuit about that law. both groups claims it violates the constitution, including the right to free speech. >> our fear is that the way the bill is written, and especially in light of already existing protections, not only in california law but our federal law that also exist, that effectively, businesses cannot talk about a wide range of topics without fear of litigation. >> now, several labor groups are supporting the new law, saying it's meant to free employees
6:48 am
from intimidation from their bosses, particularly if they're trying to form a union. >> we're not surprised. we anticipated there would be a lawsuit. i think they threatened it during the legislative process. but the reality is this is well settled law. you know, although we call it a prohibition on captive audience meetings, what this bill actually does, it's a not a restriction on employer speech. it's a restriction on their actions. >> attorney general rob bonta is representing the state in the lawsuit, but he has made no comment on the pending litigation. >> a coalition of native american tribes is suing dozens of california card rooms. the suit alleges these gaming parlors that have no ties to their tribes are violating a new state law that went into effect in the new year. it reinforces earlier laws that give native american tribes the exclusive rights to run many gambling games in california. the card rooms deny they are breaking any state laws. a retired san francisco police commander has been appointed the city's first

chief of public safety. paul yep will lead that newly formed position. he's a 28 year veteran of the san francisco police department, and he will be in charge of coordinating all of the city's agencies that deal with public safety, as well as emergency preparedness and response. >> main goal as chief of public safety is to ensure that the people that live, play and work in san francisco feel safe. statistics are very important. numbers are important. they tell one story. but if people don't feel safe, then we really haven't accomplished what we need to accomplish. >> yep. served as a san francisco police captain in san francisco in the central, northern and richmond stations. during his nearly 30 years with the department. >> time now 649 inauguration plans for san francisco's mayor elect are taking shape. daniel lowrey's inauguration will take place at city hall next wednesday morning at 1130, and the public is invited to be there. although seating will be limited to guests who have
6:50 am
tickets, the mayor elect will later appear at a chinatown night market and a community festival that same night, and there are several service events happening through the weekend that the mayor plans to take part in. >> all right. as we head over to sal, we wanted to show you how hard we're working to make sure everyone who sent us a card is going to get a card, even as we head into the new year. sal. don't shake your head. oh, we're signing more cards. >> those coming my way. >> yes they are. steve is busy signing. i'm grabbing them from steve, and i will be delivering them to you to get your signature. >> well, the good news is i found my favorite pen, and that makes a huge difference. okay, okay. >> and i just want to say, we all appreciate so much the kind notes from our viewers. you guys are amazing. it's really been fun. but get ready. get your get your fingers going. >> ready. pam, can we find another way to show our viewers kind of. what? no, i think i want. >> how about a stamp? >> okay. there you go. good morning everyone. we seriously
6:51 am
do like it, you know, we like the attention. come on. we're in this business because we like attention. and we loved your cards, that's for sure. let's go out. and the bay bridge toll plaza. that is not backed up. and i think we're going to have a pretty good week. this is the end of the week, and we might even have a little of this linger into next week. but sometime next week we're all going to say, oh my goodness, we're all back. it may not be monday, but it's going to happen at some point. this is a look at the bay bridge. as i mentioned, this is a look at 880. we're actually doing very well all over the place at 650. let's bring steve back in with today's weather. >> elsa garcia had the most beautiful signature when she first started. in the end, it was like that. it was. it was noticeable. all right. we do have our system moving in right now. sometimes people ask, what's. what's this? back in here, you're looking at a water vapor. that's dry air. when you see that right there. that's drier air back in there. but it's also colder air. so this is a cool system that's swinging
6:52 am
in. this might be the last in the series. one last system. we'll have to wait for another pattern change. it looks like everything is going to be east, that's for sure. rain returns this morning. it will continue through the early afternoon. then the colder air comes in, but it does look like a dry pattern. likely next week we'll get a lot of weekend clouds, but this looks like the last laughter in the rain, if you will. much cooler after the front goes through, sierra nevada will get snow. they have a winter storm warning out for today. 50s on the temps. mix of sun and clouds over the weekend. one more system monday. just kind of tease us. and then it looks clearing and windy as everything dives into southern california next week. >> all right steve thank you. our time now 652. governor newsom preparing to lay out his vision for california. we have details on what we know about his state of the state address. >> did not die in vain. as a result, we will be a safer city. we will be a safer country. >> the healing process in new orleans has begun. we'll tell

situation and being a free agent in march. so it's an opportunity to go out, show what i can do. here's the 40 niners in this scheme, as well as for other opportunities. so i kind of let. free agency, all that stuff work itself out when that time comes. but i'm just excited for the opportunity to get on the field and play. >> and this is dobbs 15th career start beside the 49ers and cardinals, he also played in previous seasons with the minnesota vikings, the tennessee titans and the pittsburgh steelers. now, the season will not be over on sunday for at least four of the 49ers. the nfl announced the rosters for the pro bowl in orlando, florida, february 2nd. tight end george kittle, fullback kyle ustanak, defensive end nick bosa and linebacker fred warner all made the team. more 49ers players may go to the pro bowl as alternates if some of the other players drop out. the pro bowl will feature a flag football game instead of tackle football. there will also be skills competitions leading up to the
