war. >> people did not die in vain. as a result, we will be a safer city. we will be a safer country. [music] >> bourbon street in new orleans is back open for locals and visitors, but the healing is just beginning. we'll show you what musicians are doing to help people remember, the area is much more than a scene of terror, and we're learning more about the man behind the explosion in las vegas. what we know about his military background, and why investigators say that explosion could have been much worse if a different car was used. [music] >> and we are live this morning from the santa cruz wharf, where the caution tape will soon come down and it will reopen. we'll tell you the details about how the city is hoping to bring it back with a bang. [music] >> from ktvu. [music] fox two news. this is mornings on two.
7:01 am
>> good morning. thank you for joining us here on mornings on two. i'm pam cook. >> and good morning i'm dave clark. welcome to friday. it's january 3rd and welcome back. the rain because parts of the bay area are getting it now. here's steve. >> even down to santa cruz you can see there. so yes, it's going to make it for all here today. heaviest again will be to the north 40s 50s on the temps. but the highs will only be in the 50s today. some pretty good cool air coming in behind this front. and it is a front. okay. so let's call it what it is. it's nothing else. you know none of that nonsense. but we do have the system that's going to give us some pretty good rain here, especially when the cold front goes through. i think they'll be a little more than this for some, but you can see it's kind of ramping up a little bit for a few that were on the also ran category, but i think a quarter of an inch to about a half inch three quarters should cover it. but boy, there's some cool air coming in on the back side of that which will be in tonight. so laughter in the rain, that's for sure. cloudy morning, rain north, moving south and then spreading east throughout the
7:02 am
day, but highs only in the 50s. all right. sal is here. still good? >> yes, but breaking up with this type of commute is going to be hard to do. steve, next week when everyone's back. right now, though, we have chp running a traffic break on northbound 880 at 66 because there's a stalled vehicle up the road. so chp is doing one of those zigzag moves if you've never seen it, it's actually pretty skillful driving. and they kind of drive back and forth and slow everything down. so another officer up the road can get rid of a stalled vehicle. this should be a momentary thing. maybe for the next 15 20 minutes you'll see slow traffic. if you don't want to see any of that and you're leaving the house soon, use 580 instead at 702. let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal, the president and the first lady plan to travel to new orleans on monday to meet with victims and their families of the deadly terror attack on new year's day. the coroner in new orleans says it will take time before all of the 14 victims are identified. the fbi says explosives were
7:03 am
found in coolers along bourbon street and in the french quarter, two blocks away. right now, the fbi is still looking for a motive. along bourbon street, people continue to build memorials to honor the lives lost, and volunteers are coming together to help donate blood to the local hospitals. >> i was feeling a lot of uncertainty and anxiety this morning. >> they ain't going to kill our good time. >> people did not die in vain. as a result, we will be a safer city. we will be a safer country. >> the fbi says the suspect was an army veteran from texas who was inspired by isis. the suspect showed his support for isis on social media right before the attack, and the flag of the islamic state group was also discovered on his truck. fbi also found bomb materials at the suspect's house in houston. >> our time now 703. even though the names have not been released of the people killed in the attack, their families and their friends have started sharing
7:04 am
their stories. one of the victims was 27 year old tiger beck, who played football at princeton university before graduating in 2021. his head coach says beck was a fierce competitor, a beloved teammate and a caring friend. and this photo was shared by auburn university on social media of drew dauphin, who was killed in the new year's day attack. auburn university's president christopher roberts, says dauphin graduated in 2023 and according to his linkedin profile, he worked as a supplier process engineer in birmingham, alabama. now, another victim we're learning about is nicole perez, 27 years old, a mother of a five year old boy. her family remembers her as being a dedicated mother and a worker who did what it took to take care for her son. her friends have started a gofundme campaign to help pay for the burial expenses and help raise her son. and we've learned that one of the injured was a student at san
7:05 am
diego state. and people on the campus, as you can imagine, are in shock. >> she's doing all right and hope she pulls through. it's really sad because we're all just so young. >> now, the new orleans coroner says the names of the victims will be released after the autopsies are complete, and all of the next of kin have been officially notified. >> musicians in new orleans were quick to take to bourbon street to remind the community of their resilience. [music] a brass band set up on the corner of bourbon and iberville, it's located not far from the location of the deadly attack. live music is a common sight in new orleans, but it's taking on new significance for the community after such a huge tragedy. >> life isn't guaranteed to none of us, so the biggest thing is just trying to live this moment to the to the fullest. and you know, that's obviously what you got to keep on going forward. >> trombone player and new orleans resident jonas green
7:06 am
says it was important for his band to be out on bourbon street the day after the attack, playing on the same block. he says it's a way to try to help people move forward and see the area as much more than a place of tragedy. >> our time now 705 new details about the man who was behind the cybertruck explosion in las vegas, outside of the trump hotel. authorities identified him as 37 year old matthew berger of colorado springs. he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound before the explosion. u.s. defense officials say he was an active duty member of the u.s. army special forces, most recently as a green beret, and he was on leave from germany. police in vegas say there were several similarities between that explosion and the terror attack in new orleans, but investigators don't believe they're connected. >> if these turn out to be simply similarities, very strange similarities to have. and so we're not prepared to rule in or rule out anything at
7:07 am
this point. >> now, investigators say the explosion could have been a lot worse if a vehicle other than a tesla cybertruck had been used. they believe the design and the build of that truck helped to contain most of the explosion. >> suspects behind the new orleans and las vegas attacks were u.s. born american service members. however, president elect trump blamed the incidents on the current administration's open border policy. earlier this morning, we interviewed peter lewis, director of the project on ethics and political communication at the george washington university, about the political ramifications from this week's high profile attacks and the incoming trump administration's response. >> you know, a lot of people around the world, and certainly here in the us, are worried that the president will act first, speak second, and then research and fact check third, fifth, or maybe not. not at all. you know, we're going to have reactionary policies, right? and i think a lot of people are legitimately concerned about that. >> professor lodge says colleges
7:08 am
are concerned about their foreign students, and tough immigration policies could drastically affect bay area tech companies that rely on foreign workers. >> and don't forget, you can download the fox local app on your smartphone and smart tv to stay on top of the very latest on the new orleans and las vegas attacks, along with the ktvu newscast and the content from our newsroom, you can also see content from our sister stations all over the country. it is free to download on your apple and android devices. >> the santa cruz wharf is ready to reopen. part of the wharf collapsed during heavy storms just days before christmas. and tomorrow, city leaders plan to reopen the area. ktvu james torres live there at the pier in santa cruz to talk about what the city had to do to make sure that wharf is safe. good morning james. >> good morning to you, pam. we're getting a little bit of rain falling this morning. we see the waves looking a little heavier than they normally would around here, but not nearly to the same extent to what caused some problems nearly two weeks
7:09 am
ago. i'll show you the wharf behind me here. the caution tape still up this morning. you see the gates open because crews are going in and out of the pier today, working on trying to get it reopened for tomorrow morning. for about ten days. it's been roped off, not allowing anyone on any part of the pier. and that means businesses on the wharf that normally get a lot of attention during the holidays didn't get any foot traffic, but that will change tomorrow. we'll take you back to december 23rd, our latest round of winter storms battering the pier. huge waves crashing into the wharf. hard enough to break off a 150 foot chunk and throwing it into the ocean. a bathroom building and a crane swept into the sea. the city of santa cruz hired engineers and consultants to check out the damage, and according to a sonar and engineering report, the structural integrity of the wharf is safe, meaning there is no worry of any collapse and any debris that fell into the ocean, including three large construction machines, are all a safe distance away from the pier. that report, filed by a
7:10 am
third party engineering firm and reviewed by the u.s. coast guard, all determining the wharf is safe enough to reopen. now, we still have not seen any official repairs to the wharf at the very end of it, so that damaged part will still remain closed, but the majority of the pier will reopen tomorrow. the city is planning a special reopening ceremony starting at 10 a.m. we're live this morning in santa cruz. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> time now is 709, and i've been looking at the commute. first of all, we do see that the bay bridge toll plaza does show light traffic, so it's not a typical commute. or it might be sometimes fridays are this way, but i do believe that next week will be different. we do have a stalled vehicle. northbound 880 at 29th. chp was doing a traffic break a little earlier to slow traffic down so they could remove it. it's left a little bit of slow traffic in the area. you can see it on the map there.
7:11 am
580 is the best route right now between san leandro and oakland. looks pretty clear. 710 let's go back to the desk. all right. >> sal. well, two people were killed down in fullerton. 18 others were hurt when a small plane crashed on top of a building in southern california. you'll hear the urgent calls made by the pilot immediately after he took off. >> and the first snow survey of the year is in the books. what we

the new year. three shootings in two days. on thursday, a man died by suicide after critically injuring his girlfriend and wounding a toddler. both of them are expected to survive. in separate incidents, a woman was arrested for a shooting on bryant street. two victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and a suspect was arrested for a homicide on new year's day. well, an investigation continues in oakland after a hateful message was found a few feet away from a menorah right along lake merritt. the message was found wednesday on the concrete base near the menorah on the final night of hanukkah. no arrests have been made yet. and today, congress begins its new term with republicans in control of
7:15 am
both the house and the senate for the first time since 2019. and a little while, house republicans are scheduled to take a key leadership vote on electing the next speaker of the house. president elect trump has endorsed house speaker mike johnson to stay in that powerful job on capitol hill. but some conservative republicans may derail johnson's efforts to keep his job. >> berkeley police are investigating a terrifying incident a reported attempted child kidnaping. this happened at about 730 yesterday morning near the intersection of ninth and addison. police say the mother of the child reported two people, a man and a woman, jumped out of a large white van and tried to grab her ten year old son. both the mother and her child managed to escape. anyone with information on this case is asked to contact berkeley police. >> our time now 715. authorities in orange county say two people were killed and 18 others were hurt when a small plane crashed
7:16 am
right through the roof of a commercial building. it happened yesterday afternoon near the fullerton airport, about 25 miles south of downtown los angeles. investigators say the pilot made an urgent call to the air tower shortly after he took off, asking could he immediately return to the airport? >> the tower controller then cleared the pilot to land on any runway. the airplane then appeared to make a 180 degree left turn, and flew the left downwind for runway two four, and ultimately crashed about 1000ft short of runway two four, struck a furniture building and immediately caught fire. >> authorities say the two people who died, they were on that plane. the injured were inside the building. the ntsb is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. >> 716 is the time. back over to sal. keeping an eye on traffic and the commute. where are you starting, sal? >> well, we're going to start on
7:17 am
880. pam and dave, it wasn't a serious thing, but someone has broken down on northbound 880 at 29th, and there was a slowdown because chp slow traffic down. it looks like they're waiting for a tow truck here. and the traffic is a little bit slow in that area. it's not as slow as it was, but it's slow anyway. it's backed up from about the coliseum and the wet weather. it's not really raining hard, but it's not really helping any. so if you want to use a different route today, this morning the alternate routes are doing well. i'm not sure what happened with my maps there. there we go. westbound 580 looks a lot better. everything is moving along very nicely. heading on 580 instead of 880, which you see is pretty slow. 717 let's bring steve, who never has any computer. i never say that. >> i never say, what's wrong with me, i never sal thank you sir. all right. we do have rain has arrived, even down towards santa cruz. james torres is there and saw the wet pavement and our system. the models have
7:18 am
backed off a little bit on amounts, but it's rather uniform here. about a quarter to a half inch should cover the spread. and there it is. once the front goes through, some much cooler air is coming in behind that. but there's the line already up in mendocino county, lake county, sonoma and marin, and moving east again about a quarter of an inch to it looks like a half inch should cover most of the locations here. the sierra snowpack was good to the north and to the south, as we probably already knew, but statewide average is 108%. central sierra including lake tahoe region. looking to add to that total? they're looking for 7 to 10in of new snow here over the next 24 hours. so snow level goes up in the morning 6000ft, then comes down 4000ft in the evening. but six inches to a foot looks likely. 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. is your winter storm warning? 40s. 50s temps here. the breeze is out of the south. that's drier air coming in, but also much cooler air to the west that will be here this afternoon. and that will keep us on the cool side here. but one
7:19 am
last system in the current pattern, and then it looks like the pattern changes to a drier when rain returns this morning into early afternoon, and then a dry pattern likely next week. hopefully not too much longer than that, but laughter in the rain for the morning rain arrives for all much cooler. the breeze will pick up out of the west northwest by this afternoon and this evening 50s on the temps. now the weekend won't be all sunny, but it will get some clouds. mix of sun and clouds. one more system monday then clearing and windy with everything. diving into arizona and southern california. >> thank you steve. and the first snow survey of the year in the books. steve was just talking about this. it shows a good start to the winter snowpack. and as ktvu tom vacar reports, it has been especially good in the northern part of the sierra. >> what we have at this point is a mixed bag of positive news and a fair dose of future concern. california began snow surveys 115 years ago here at phillips station. six specific spots on
7:20 am
this meadow have been measured and averaged for 84 years. today, this is just one of 265 snow courses, plus another 130 remote snow sensors blanketing the vast snowpack area. this combo of human surveys and remote sensing gives water planners, farmers, 27 major water agencies and wildlife protectors excellent, accurate and critical information. >> our snowpack is about 110% of average to date, based off our automated snow sensor network. statewide and statewide, precipitation is about 115% of average right now. >> but north of interstate 80, where all the big mega reservoirs are, the snowpack is a whopping 160% of average on this date. one caution though there have been some years where rain and snow seasons started out gangbusters, only to see the storms mostly disappear after the first of the year.
7:21 am
>> back in year 2022, we had 154% of average snowpack on this day in january, but it ended up on april 1st at 37% of average. so we definitely dried out. most of the storms that are predicted are going to be north of california for the next two weeks. >> it's a little early, i think, to have have any concern for more than four decades, veteran meteorologist jan noll has developed many aspects of weather forecasting and has taught legions of meteorologists the art and science of forecasting. having these fluctuations through the course of the year is, you know, is not unexpected. we're not even to the midway point of the rainfall year beyond two week forecasts, we're mostly guessing. looking farther on out, you know, talking about, you know, long range weather forecasting. you know, it's not there yet. >> that said, one thing is for sure we'll need a progression of
7:22 am
monthly storms to keep going because otherwise we will end up maybe similar under average by the end of the year already. things are good enough that the water resources department has increased water deliveries to those with water rights from 5% up to 15% with just the water they already have on hand. tom vacar ktvu fox two news. >> tom. thank you. we have some new video as the fbi continues its search for whoever planted pipe bombs in washington, dc the night before the capitol riot in 2021. we have a closer look at that surveillance video and the reward now being offered for answers. and we know it now. the world knows it. stephen curry is officially the greatest shooter of all time. and he showed why last night at chase center, we have a look at stephen curry's incredible performance that has placed him i the

chief about his plans to make san francisco feel safe again. >> the baby was a year and a half year and a half year and a half. so, yeah, she's going to have to have to grow up without the dad and everything. he's going to have to grow up without a dad. >> a heartbroken father, you see, telling us what happened moments before his son shot his girlfriend and his and the son right before turning the gun on himself. [music] >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well good morning. thank you for joining us. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cook. it is friday, january 3rd. i'm in for garcia today. and there's some rain outside. you peeked out and saw it firsthand. and it's cold. all right. >> it will be cold tonight, but we have rain now. that is true. 40s. 50s on the temps. this looks like the last system for us for a while. maybe 15th or 16th of january as the next one. that's kind of the way it's
7:31 am
looking here after this system goes through. we will see a little pattern change, but it's rain for your friday morning for almost everybody, and then a much cooler and breezy, windy pattern as we head towards friday afternoon. we'll get a lot of clouds over the weekend, but it looks like this is the last good rain, if you will, and it won't be that much. about a quarter of an inch to upwards of a half, maybe three quarters of an inch. marin county up to the russian river. but boy, there's some cool air coming in on the back side of this system, which will be here later today. laughter in the rain, that's for sure. cloudy morning. rain north spreading south already has for some much cooler. the wind will pick up a little later as well, and temperatures are only in the 50s. all right. sal is here. we had one hiccup. is that better or worse? same. >> it's better. steve. do i have permission to walk hand in hand with the one i love? >> sal, you have a one way ticket, my friend. >> thank you very much. and that problem that steve talked about is pretty much improved. the bay bridge has not been very slow at all. there's a little bit of pockets of slowing on the
7:32 am
bridge, but none at the toll plaza. that earlier stalled vehicle we had on 880 has cleared up, and so has the traffic. it's a little wet out there, so use care. 731 let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you sal. the new year is off to a violent start in san francisco. >> yet the police are busy. they're investigating three separate shootings during the first two days of 2025. ktvu is andre senior in the studio with us now with the details. andre. well, dave. >> pam, good morning to you both. the city of san francisco had just wrapped up a year where police had reported the lowest number of homicides since 1960. there were 34 killings in the city in 2024, but police are now reporting this year, 2025, off to a bad start. right now, the three shootings in san francisco during the first two days of this new year involve one that is especially tragic. police say it involved a man who took his own life after wounding his girlfriend and their toddler son. it happened yesterday morning near alemany boulevard. the suspected shooter's father showed up at the scene shortly
7:33 am
after the gunfire. >> my name is anthony thomas. i'm the father of the deceased male. antoinema he took his life for, for some strange reason. i didn't. i didn't get a chance to make it here on time to stop it. and now he's gone. >> the baby was a year and a half year and a half year and a half. >> so, yeah, she's going to have to have to grow up without the dad and everything. he's going to have to grow up without a dad. >> the toddler wounded in the shooting is expected to survive. the woman is being treated for life threatening injuries. in another incident, police have a suspect in custody for homicide in the city. shortly after midnight on new year's day. that deadly gunfire erupted near the intersection of van ness and 17th street. >> right after the shooting. the suspect fled from the area in an suv. a few hours later, officers located the suspect vehicle in
7:34 am
the area of bayshore and geneva and were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident. >> police are also investigating a third shooting in the city that took place yesterday. officers arrested a woman accused of wounding two people in the south of market area. officers say they captured the woman, who they say pulled the trigger. a few hours later in the tenderloin district. police say they are no ties to these three shootings. pam. >> thank you. andre. a retired san francisco police commander has been appointed the city's first chief of public safety. paul young will lead that newly formed position. he's a 28 year veteran of the san francisco police department. he will be in charge of coordinating all of the city's agencies that deal with public safety, as well as emergency preparedness and response. >> as chief of public safety is to ensure that the people that live, play and work in san francisco feel safe. statistics are very important. numbers are important. they tell one story.
7:35 am
but if people don't feel safe, then we really haven't accomplished what we need to accomplish. >> yep. served as a police captain in san francisco's central, northern and richmond stations during his nearly 30 years with the department. unions representing oakland firefighters are now calling attention to budget cuts that could affect response times. the union says as of monday, three fire stations will be closed their on santa clara avenue, butters drive and grass valley road. oakland is facing a $129 million budget deficit, and is closing stations as a way to save money. >> time is now 735. jewish leaders in oakland are very upset after finding a hateful message just feet away from a menorah along lake merritt, and they say it's not the first time something like this has happened. the anti-israel message was scrawled on the concrete base near a menorah
7:36 am
wednesday, the final day of hanukkah. the menorah is belong to chabad jewish center of oakland. that center serves all jewish people, regardless of their background or their affiliation. >> fortunately, oakland has become really the ground zero for this stuff. every, every week we have we have graffiti around the lake. >> we're all mirrors of each other. we are all brothers and sisters, and we should start treating each other as such. >> now, last year, another menorah installed in that very same location was vandalized. on the sixth day of hanukkah. it was ripped apart and some of its pieces were thrown into the lake. no arrests have been made in this latest incident. >> the fbi has released new video of the person who they believe planted pipe bombs in washington, d.c, the night before the capitol riot in 2021. surveillance video shows the person sitting on a bench outside the democratic national committee headquarters before placing the bomb. a second bomb was planted at the republican
7:37 am
national committee headquarters. now, they did not go off and no one was hurt, but a $500,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest. >> time is now 736. today, congress begins its new term with republicans in full control of both the house and the senate for the first time since 2019. and in just a couple of hours from now, house republicans are due to take their crucial leadership vote. president elect trump has endorsed house speaker mike johnson to stay in that powerful post on capitol hill. but some conservative republicans may derail johnson's efforts to keep his job. johnson points out republicans have a razor thin majority in the house. >> it's a numbers game. we have the smallest margin in u.s. history. we'll have a margin of probably two votes, so can only afford to lose 1 or 2. but i think we'll get it done. >> now, johnson's far right critics have said he hasn't done enough to reduce government spending, and his recently proposed spending bill.
7:38 am
president elect trump argues johnson is the best leader to carry out his conservative reforms on capitol hill. >> 737 is the time back over to sal. people have if they're heading out the door right now, what do they need to know, sal? >> well, it is raining and or i mean, in some areas we'll let that. we'll let the man, steve, tell us about the actual rain, but it's wet. and that's one thing that does affect traffic. let's go to 880. we had an earlier stalled vehicle on 880 north that's been cleared up. the bay bridge is nice and light. so today we're not having a lot of traffic out there, but it is wet weather. and sometimes people do get into crashes because of the wet weather. 738 let's go back to steve, who's talking about today's weather. >> thank you, kind sir. yes, sir. all right. we'll get to it here. it has been a state divided. actually. it's been. the bay area has been divided between rain and no rain, but it's been really ugly in southern california. really dry. maybe that will change a little bit next week. kind of a hint of
7:39 am
that on the pattern. but crescent city, redding and santa rosa doing quite well. santa barbara, los angeles and san diego, that's ugly. andre, back with more cards for me to sign. what? what? in the wide, wide world, where are you finding all these cards, andre? all right, our system is moving through now. there is a definite back edge to it. and once that goes through, then we'll get the much cooler air. so cloudy with rain in the morning, then a cooler, windy, breezy pattern in the afternoon. but this will give, i think about a quarter to a half inch. kind of looks to be the range here. maybe a little bit more. casadero russian river. also mount tamalpais usually the usual areas as far as the snowpack goes on the first survey. really good. northern california, not bad. central. they also ran a southern california statewide average is 108%. however, we'll be adding to the central here with around 7 to 10in, maybe a foot of new snow. so a winter storm warning is out for the sierra. snow level goes up in the morning,
7:40 am
