with the people involved with the inauguration ceremony and the celebrations. the inauguration ceremony for mayor elect daniel lurie will take place at civic center plaza on wednesday morning at 1130. an open house inside city hall will follow. 2000 seats will be set up for ticketed guests. the one hour long ceremony will include speeches and performances. the public is invited to attend. >> everybody is welcome to come and witness this historic moment and to be a part of this- [music] change moment in san francisco history. >> from 530 to 9 p.m, there will be a night market along a two block stretch of grant avenue. it will feature a stage with live performances. lurie is seen here at a chinatown night market. he is credited with funding these events long before he was elected mayor. the night market founder says lurie has helped chinatown in its economic recovery efforts. >> it's something that, you know, bring people to chinatown. this is something because chinatown is so, you know, so

quiet. it's been very slow. so i think a lot of merchants really are, you know, see, we can bring people to, you know, especially young people. >> the night market on wednesday will feature a beer garden on commercial street. 100,000 firecrackers will be lit in front of the historic far east restaurant with lion dancers to celebrate. lurie. inside, there will be a nine course banquet for the new mayor. >> he does care about chinatown, so. and i think it's not only chinatown that you know the asian community. >> organizers say the $1,000 per table event sold out in days. guest speakers include governor gavin newsom, former mayors willie brown and frank jordan. >> it's the first time a mayor has ever selected chinatown as the site for inauguration festivities, and we're extremely grateful to people who plan to attend the banquet. >> shared this photo with me saying that lurie participated in their chinese new year parade float and supported their groups promoting asian empowerment. >> we've had his back since then, and we've always we will

continue to have his back as he also supports our community. >> he's very accessible. he's very kind. and yeah, just a really great mayor that cares about asian voice to. >> organizers say security will be tight both at civic center plaza and in chinatown. people plan to participate, are asked to take public transit or rideshare. >> christina amberleigh live in our studio tonight. amber. thank you. the san francisco police officers association has called for the city to rejoin the fbi's joint terrorism task force. the po says that in light of the terror attack in new orleans on new year's day and with upcoming events in san francisco, including the mayoral inauguration, the jpmorgan chase convention and nba all star game, now is the time to rejoin. the fbi describes the joint terrorism task force as the nation's front line of defense against terrorism. >> eyes of the world are going to be on san francisco basically

for the next two months, right? to see how we handle these high profile events. >> san francisco left the joint terrorism task force in 2017 as president trump took office for his first term due to concerns that it could infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens. the po says now it's up to city leaders to determine the path forward. a supervisor in san francisco has a new plan that he says will address the city's drug crisis. the program, he hopes, would get drug users off the streets, provide them treatment and reduce drug dealing. ktvu zac sos spoke with the supervisor behind the plan and shows us why some groups are coming out in opposition. >> what we're facing is a level of public drug use and drug addiction and drug markets that's unlike anything that we have seen before. >> san francisco supervisor matt dorsey, calling on several city agencies, including police, to help come up with a plan to step up arrests of drug users. dorsey says new laws on the books, including proposition 36, have

opened the door to treatment mandated felonies. >> now, obviously, if we're going to make an arrest, it should be a life saving intervention. we should make sure that there's medically assisted treatment and medication and opportunities for recovery available. >> the san francisco public health department, fire department, sheriff's office and district attorney's office also being asked to weigh in on his letter of inquiry. >> what we need is a coordinated strategy. what we know is right now, there are 200 people who are going to be engaging in illegal drug use on a quarter mile stretch of sixth street tonight. >> in response, the san francisco aids foundation, which provides substance abuse counseling and operates harm reduction sites in the city, including the distribution of clean syringes, narcan and drug testing strips coming out against the plan. in a statement, foundation ceo tyler tamir saying in part, quote, reports of an initiative advocating for mass arrests along the sixth street corridor as a pathway to treatment or detox are deeply concerning and

counterproductive. decades of research have shown that criminalizing people for their health conditions or circumstances perpetuates harm, rather than fosters recovery. forced treatment under the threat of incarceration undermines trust in health services. >> i would challenge them to show me the studies. i think what people tend to show when they look at these studies, they're looking at studies that are showing that people who don't have severe substance use disorders. >> dorsey pointing out that he's approaching the problem as someone who once struggled with substance abuse himself. >> this made politics personal to me in a way that it had never been personal before. and right now, i feel like there's a lot of people from the recovery community who are joining with me in saying, we have to do something about the scale of public drug use that's going on in our city. >> in san francisco, zac sos, ktvu, fox two news. >> new at 11 a man has been arrested for illegally making and selling guns. the contra costa county sheriff says 27 year old diego vazquezgomez

illegally made and sold different types of firearms, including assault weapons and short barreled rifles. investigators say his arrest is in connection to a shooting at an rv park during the contra costa county fair that injured a man and sent a bullet into a home across the street. a man has been arrested in connection to a fire at an historic mansion in northern california. officers with the california state parks department announced today. 30 year old kevin carlson was arrested thursday after they say he set fire to the bidwell mansion in chico on december 11th. the victorian mansion was built in the 1860s by john bidwell, who founded chico. carlson is now facing several charges. a popular pizzeria in benicia is reeling after the former bookkeeper was arrested on embezzlement charges. 42 year old jessica rose carpino, a mother of three, is accused of stealing at least $141,000 from pizza pirate. carpino was first hired eight years ago. we spoke

with the former restaurant owner, patrick abshire, who who owned pizza pirate for 30 years, but he was forced to sell it in september because of financial problems. >> very disappointed and frustrated and depressed because, you know, this was my life for 30 years and i really wasn't ready to move on from it for a few more years till i could retire. >> the suspect has already made bail. the solano county district attorney's office will now review the case to determine any formal charges for allegedly cooking the books. former 49ers star dana stubblefield will have to wait two more weeks to learn if he'll be released from prison. stubblefield was scheduled to appear in court today, but his hearing was delayed after a judge refused to hear his case due to disagreements over who has jurisdiction. a state appellate court tossed out stubblefield's 22. excuse me, 2020 rape conviction last week, the court ruled that santa clara county prosecutors violated the

california racial justice act when they said stubblefield's race was a factor in the decision by law enforcement officers to not search his house. >> it's a procedural issue. this has no reflection on the merits of what's left. i mean, the appellate court was loud and clear and said there is no valid conviction, and we believe there is. there was more errors in this trial than us professionally we've ever seen. >> stubblefield is now scheduled to appear in court january 17th. we're learning new information about a deadly plane crash in southern california. coming up actions the pilot made shortlyhe before the incident. >> plus, she's hitting that exact 50 over 50% cap mortality rate that we see a whale coming off the coast of washington state making headlines once again, several years after she was spotted carrying her calf's corpse. >> and the highest ranking california senator announces his

audio, panicked, gasping can be heard, as well as a female voice saying, oh my god. moments before the plane crashed through the roof of a commercial building. staying in southern california, investigators believe gang members are responsible for the shooting deaths of seven people. they shared updates today on the riverside county case from 2020. all seven victims of asian descent. excuse me. lotion descent were shot to death at an illegal marijuana growing operation. sheriff chad bianco believes getting help from the lotion community will lead them to the killers. >> the lotion community across the country is extremely tight. and it is. it is relatively small, and i mean a lack of other way to put it. they all know. they all know everything about their community and what happens. so for these laotian gangs to learn about something in the community, in the asian community of a marijuana grower or something like that, that that would be relatively easy for them to find out.

>> investigators suspect the people responsible for these killings are part of a san diego based gang, mostly with members of asian descent. they're urging anyone with information about the case to contact the riverside county sheriff's office. in washington, a beloved orca whale who made headlines in 2018 after carrying her dead calf for days, is once again in mourning. the mother orca, known as tahlequah, was last seen wednesday carrying the body of another one of her calves, first spotted days before christmas. the discovery of the calf was supposed to be a gift, but just as fast as hope sprang, it was dashed. >> it's definitely showing that you know she is grieving. this is a hard loss. we all know her from 2018, when she carried that calf around for 17 days for over a thousand miles. >> the washington state based center for whale research says mortality rate in calves is high, with only about 1 in 5 orca pregnancies resulting in a

after almost losing during the first round of voting. nine of the new u.s. representatives from our state include two members from the bay area, including former san jose mayor sam liccardo and former bart board member latifah simon. it has been nearly one year since police took over people's park in berkeley. the gathering taking place tomorrow, giving people an opportunity to voice their concerns and traffic moving slowly on roads up in the sierra. we'll hear from travelers as they describe the drive that at times came to a standstill. >> and barry, whether the rain clouds from today moving on out of town. it looks like a dry weather stretch t t begins this we

conditions. i-80 was closed for several hours, as we mentioned, but now back open. traffic has really been slow moving for most of the night. some people from the bay area traveling up to tahoe for the weekend say this is the worst traffic they have ever seen in this region. >> it was torturous. i mean, we were using waze and then it was saying that the road was closed and then but then it reopened, but then it was closed again. >> i've gone to tahoe before, but it has never been like this type of standstill. >> authorities say they have responded to multiple traffic crashes and spinouts along interstate 80 throughout the day. a tornado was spotted in northern california today, making it the country's first confirmed tornado of 2025. the national weather service warned residents of shasta and tehama counties to seek shelter after the tornado was reported around 5:20 p.m, about 11 miles southwest of shingletown. the warning was in effect until 6 p.m, followed by an alert of 40

mile per hour winds and possible penny sized hail. so far, there have been no reports of damage in the area. let's go now to meteorologist mark tamayo for our final look at our forecast. hi, mark. >> hi there. christina. yeah. unsettled weather as you were talking about severe weather for portions of northern california. the national weather service will head out to that zone tomorrow. and as a result, we'll get more information, more of a confirmation. but it is already a confirmed tornado. as you can see the location. you can see just to give you some bearing here, there's red bluff redding and just to the east of cottonwood with that tornado report. here is the radar imagery from earlier today. this all happened during the 5:00 hour. so that's when we had the tornado warning issued. and then it actually expired at 6:00. and thankfully no damage or injuries to report. showing you rainfall for us here in the bay area, those numbers adding up. so we had kind of a soggy friday across parts of the bay area, especially up in the north bay. santa rosa 0.46, san francisco 0.18. and here is the plan this weekend. it will be dry, but it won't be completely sunny. we have some fog first thing

tomorrow morning. partly sunny skies into the afternoon hours. sunday could be a little bit warmer with a sun cloud mix. so active radar once again today. as you can see over northern california and the bay area and out toward the sierra, the winter storm warning has been allowed to expire, so the snowfall will taper overnight tonight into saturday. here's the radar coverage right now as we come in closer to the bay area. not out of the question. you might have some mist or some drizzle tonight into early tomorrow morning, but the main action is moving on out of town. we will have just some lingering clouds first thing tomorrow morning. it's a chilly night. santa rosa right now is 44 degrees oakland, 52 san jose in the upper 40s. and here is our live camera looking above san francisco for your friday night. so we get a chance to dry out into the weekend. and what's interesting into next week. this will be a long term dry stretch. maybe by mid january we could be talking about the rain back in the forecast, but it's fairly quiet as this system moves on out and this area of high pressure rebuilds. and that will set the stage for a dry weekend.

but still some clouds paying us a visit off and on. and that's what this forecast model is showing you at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon for your saturday and then into sunday. pretty much the same story. partly cloudy skies on sunday and then into next week. we're talking about some breezy conditions here in the bay area, and some strong winds down towards southern california. and they already have a fire weather watch down for tuesday beginning tuesday, and for a good portion of next week for us, we get a break in the rainfall. we have a sun cloud mix this weekend, fair skies by monday, maybe some stronger winds as we head into the tuesday forecast. the umbrellas do get a break over the next several days. >> christina. sounds good mark. thank you. a vigil is being held tomorrow, marking one year since shipping containers were put up around the perimeter of people's park in berkeley. last january 4th, police moved in on the park and removed people who were living there before putting up those containers. uc berkeley plans to build housing for cal students and low income families in berkeley. on the park's grounds. a group opposed to the plan is holding a vigil at haste

and telegraph tomorrow afternoon. there will be a time for people to share their stories about the park and a film screening. screening. the vigil runs from 230 to 630 in the afternoon. a project to improve safety on a busy san francisco street is now complete. today, a ceremony was held marking the completion of the safer taylor street project. improvements were made to taylor street in the tenderloin between ellis and turk streets, including wider sidewalks, freshly painted crosswalks, planters, trees and places for people to sit. city leaders say this is part of a new vision for taylor street. >> one of the great challenges in this community is our traffic safety. most residents of the tenderloin do not own a car. most get around walking or by bus, and unfortunately there are. too often they are too often the victims of traffic violence and end up with serious injuries or even fatalities on our streets. >> in the last ten years, there

high school basketball coaching legend and a member of usf's 1955 basketball national championship team, has died. according to the chronicle, stan buchanon died yesterday of cancer in larkspur. buchanan was born and raised in san francisco, attending saint ignatius and playing for the usf dons in 1955. he started alongside bill russell and helped the school win the national championship. after his playing days, he coached at saint vincent's in vallejo, saint ignatius, and at redwood high school in larkspur. buchanan was 91 years old. the oakland zoo is now taking care of a monkey recovered earlier this week during a traffic stop. the endangered animal was suffering from severe medical problems when officers rescued it. ktvu joey hoarder shows up the uphill battle. the monkey faces as the zoo tries to nurse it back to health.

>> this young, malnourished and endangered spider monkey is under the care of the veterinary team at the oakland zoo, but the six month old's road to oakland came with some bizarre turns. >> the first thing i don't believe i've heard, i've seen it anywhere else, california highway patrol says the officers pulled over the speeding driver of this $400,000 rolls royce ghost on highway 99 north in madera county on monday. >> inside the car, officers would find marijuana. a driver, they say was high on pot and the icing on the cake. >> the investigation. the officer heard a noise coming out of the driver's jacket. when questioned about about it, the driver unzipped his jacket inside a very little monkey in a pink onesie strapped to the stomach of the driver, said adel muhammad of san bernardino county.

>> the oakland zoo now has the female, whose species is native to mexico, under quarantine for a respiratory infection and issues with her skin and coat. staff believes she should weigh twice as much as she does a mere one and a half pounds. >> the reality is that she's also been traumatized and, you know, being taken away from her family, being smuggled across the border. >> half of the animals currently on exhibit at the oakland zoo have been rescued from the illegal exotic pet trade, with the zoo receiving 100 requests to rehabilitate victims of the wildlife pet trade since 2021, including this chimpanzee. wrapping himself up in a blanket. among those rescued from a lab or hollywood, even though they're adorable and you know they're on social media and clothes and playing with baby toys, they're not an appropriate pet. >> and we cannot, as humans, take care of them. even for us as professionals, it's challenging. >> the zoo is hopeful for the

monkey's recovery, and they're hoping to find another zoo or sanctuary where she can go live with other spider monkeys. in oakland. joey horta ktvu fox two news. >> a local food bank could reach its goal by the end of the day, thanks to your help. you might remember earlier in the week, the contra costa county food bank put its plea to the public for donations to help feed tens of thousands of bay area families. well, now, the food bank says it has reached 99% of its goal, and it may even exceed that number thanks to local donations. so thank you, bay area for stepping up. the 49ers have been eliminated from the playoffs, which means they will not be in this year's super bowl, but you can still watch the big game at the home of the 49ers. the team will be hosting a super bowl watch party at levi's stadium. it's part of a super bowl fan fest being hosted by the nfl and verizon, and there will be watch parties at 30 different nfl stadiums across the country as the game is played in new orleans. the super bowl will be held in santa clara
