of mayor on starting on wednesday, the one hour long event at civic center includes speeches and performances, with an open house inside city hall to follow. >> 2000 seats will be set up for ticketed guests, but everybody is welcome to come and witness this historic moment and to be a part of this change moment in san francisco history. afterwards, a night market will take over a two block stretch of grant avenue. 100,000 firecrackers will be lit in front of the historic far east restaurant with lion dancers to celebrate. lurie. the mayor elect, credited by local leaders with funding similar events long before the election, helping chinatown with its economic recovery efforts. this event expected to offer yet another boost to the area, which is the first time a mayor has ever selected chinatown as the site for inauguration festivities. >> and we're extremely grateful. >> and wednesday's inauguration ceremony for mayor elect daniel lurie again taking place on

wednesday. the event starts at 1130 in the morning, followed by that night market and chinatown from 530 to 9 in the evening should be quite the event. >> zac sos in studio tonight. zach. thank you. staying in san francisco, all of the. there were thousands of customers whose power was restored. it was all due to a gas leak. they had to be evacuated. and we do know this happened in the city's outer richmond neighborhood. ktvu bailey o'carroll spoke with residents who describe the chaos that ensued when the leak started, and all of a sudden, all #### broke loose and we're like, holy, they hit a bigger pipe. >> and then we realized it was gas. >> thousands of people in san francisco had their power shut off, and others had to be evacuated saturday when a crew working struck a gas line. >> this is city workers doing roadside street work. it's our understanding at this time, which is subject to change, that while doing their digging operations, they struck and breached a four inch pge line. >> the leak started just after 1130 in the morning, and gas

could be smelled in the blocks surrounding where the leak happened at balboa in 47th avenue. greg bailey was there when it started. >> the smell was like. it was like sitting in your kitchen. turn your burners on with no gas, with no flame. i mean literally. and so we just hauled down to the end of the street. >> he said everyone immediately knew what was happening. >> literally the water. everybody took off down the street and up the street to get away from it. >> he said emergency crews went door to door trying to get residents on the block to evacuate. >> they went door to door and then some of the doors. people wouldn't answer and they kept knocking on them. >> now the red cross was on hand to help those evacuated. so far, some good news. no injuries have been reported. and again, all those evacuation orders have been lifted. bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> new at ten police in san francisco have a person in custody tonight following a shooting near a homeless shelter. it happened in the yerba buena neighborhood near fifth and welsh around 630 tonight. once on scene, officers

found a person who had been shot. that victim was taken to the hospital with major injuries. police say they developed probable cause and arrested 29 year old taylor reed. the charges against him are still pending tonight. it is unclear what led up to this incident. in oakland, police are investigating after an officer shot at a person and wound them. police say a sergeant spotted an armed suspect firing off a rifle on macarthur the sergeant fired atherning. of running. the suspect thenok barricaded themselves inside of nearby home, and after an hours long standoff, the person eventually surrendered. officers say they recovered a firearm. that suspect is expected to survive. also in oakland, police say three people were wounded in a shooting not far from the downtown area. this happened shortly after 730 last night on 13th street, outside of a bar a few blocks away from the oakland tribune building. officers found three people lying on the street with gunshot wounds. one of those victims is listed in

critical condition. so far, there have been no arrests in this case. police in san francisco are investigating a deadly hit and run crash in the city's portola neighborhood. police say a car hit a pedestrian at silver avenue and colby street around 540 tonight. when they arrived, officers found a person lying on the ground with major injuries. the victim died at the scene. police say the driver took off immediately after hitting the pedestrian. no arrests have been reported. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. an armed, unarmed fugitive is arrested in sonoma county after leading deputies on a high-speed chase yesterday. the pursuit ended after the driver, a 26 year old man from concord, crashed near the intersection of highway 12 and west napa street. the sonoma county sheriff's department says the driver was speeding and running red lights during the chase. deputies say they also found a loaded handgun in his car that was stolen, as well as ammunition and drugs. the suspect had several warrants out of san jose and pittsburg.

former 49ers star dana stubblefield will have to wait two more weeks to learn if he'll be released from prison. stubblefield was scheduled to appear in court yesterday, but his hearing was delayed after a judge refused to hear his case due to disagreements over who has jurisdiction. last week, a state appellate court tossed out stubblefield's rape conviction from 2020. the court ruled santa clara county prosecutors violated the california racial justice act when they said stubblefield's race was a factor in the decision by officers to not search his house. >> it's a procedural issue. this has no reflection on the merits of what's left. i mean, the appellate court was loud and clear and said there is no valid conviction, and we believe there is. there was more errors in this trial than us professionally we've ever seen. >> stubblefield is now scheduled to appear in court on january 17th.

who was the inspiration behind the donkey in the movie shrek, has sadly died. the baron park donkeys in palo alto say perry died thursday at the age of 30. his 30th birthday party drew national attention last year. the event raised tens of thousands of dollars. perry's cause of death has not been announced. the barron park donkeys say memorial plans for perry will be announced soon. a high surf advisory is in effect for parts of northern california. we'll give you a live look out across the oakland estuary tonight. the national weather service says some parts of the california coast could see large, breaking waves between 18 to 22ft high. the advisory remains in effect through 3 a.m. and in santa cruz, the city's iconic wharf officially reopened today after a portion of it collapsed into the ocean less than two weeks ago. ktvu is betty yu was there and has the report. >> the whole front just fell of. >> the end of the historic santa cruz wharf, fell into the ocean

during a massive storm on december 23rd. it was a dramatic sight, much of it captured on social media. two people were rescued and a third swam to safety after the partial collapse. >> today, what we want to do is let you know, let the community know, let people all over northern california know it is safe to come to our wharf. >> at the reopening ceremony saturday, the city announced that recent sonar and engineering tests determined that the pier, which is the longest wooden wharf in the western hemisphere, is safe to reopen to the public. more than 20 businesses were forced to close for nearly two weeks, affecting some 400 employees. >> it was really tough. you know, this is a busy time of the year for us and we missed out on a lot of sales. our employees missed out a lot of work. you know, rent and bills are coming due. and so we were all kind of stressed out marines. >> candace has been at this

danger down in southern california, where they already have fire weather watches. we'll have more on that and also more in your full forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> good mark. see you then. fresh dungeness crab is set to go on sale in san francisco to the public beginning tomorrow. since 2021, crabbers have been permitted to sell directly from their vessels in the inner and outer lagoons of fisherman's wharf. city officials are encouraging people to support local crabbers and fishermen, and kick off the new year with a beloved san francisco tradition. information on participating vessels and their locations can be found on the port of san francisco's website. a vigil was held today, marking one year since shipping containers were put up around the perimeter of people's park in berkeley. last january 4th, police moved in on the park, removing people who were living there before putting up those containers. a group opposed to the plan held a vigil at haste and telegraph this afternoon. uc berkeley plans to build housing for cal students and low income families in berkeley on the parks grounds.

reported missing out of the east bay. police in san leandro say 56 year old pamela jones was last seen around 7:00 thursday night near juana avenue and santa rosa street. officers say she was last seen wearing a beige beanie, white shirt and gray pants. detectives say jones has diagnosed mental health issues but is believed to be taking her medication. if you have any information on her whereabouts, you're asked to call san leandro police. a high school basketball coaching legend and a former member of the usf 1955 basketball national championship team has died. according to the chronicle, stan buchanon died this week of cancer in larkspur. buchanan was born and raised in san francisco, attending saint ignatius and playing for the usf dons in 1955. he started alongside bill russell and helped the school win the national championship. after his playing days, he coached at saint vincent's in vallejo,

saint ignatius, and also at redwood high school in larkspur. buchanan was 91 years old. the husband of actor aubrey plaza has died, according to the medical examiner's records, 47 year old jeff baena was found dead friday at a los angeles home. the circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. baiano was an independent director. plaza starred in bayona's directorial debut in 2014, and appeared in two of his four other films. a new report ranks airlines globally and across the us that have operated the most on time flights. aviation analytics site cirium released its 2024 on time performance review and named delta as the top performing airline in the u.s. that is followed by united alaska airlines, american airlines and southwest. delta had around an 83% on time arrival rate last year. the atlanta based carrier has landed in first place for four years in a row now. it also

police car and police presence there. not too many people out on the street at this hour, as it is just past midnight in central standard time for new orleans. but people are still out and about as those people remember the victims who were lost. and earlier today, mourners gathered to listen to jazz music and pay their respects to those lives who were lost. 14 people were killed and dozens more injured when a man drove a pickup truck through an area where revelers were ringing in the new year. all but one of the 14 people killed have been identified. authorities have identified the suspect as 42 year old shamsuddin jabbar of texas, an army veteran who had served in afghanistan. he was killed in a gunfight with police at the scene. officials are still trying to determine a motive. that attack in new orleans happened just hours before the annual sugar bowl at the superdome. and while there were no threats against the venue, the cotton bowl outside dallas, texas, isn't taking any chances. as fox's alex boyer

shows us law enforcement is taking significant safety measures for next week's college football playoff game. >> the deadly new year's day terror attack in new orleans that left 14 people dead and injured dozens of others has put renewed scrutiny on city security plans nationwide. >> we're planning for major events is critical that we do not become complacent. >> deputy chief leo daniels oversees the arlington police department's event management unit. the apd has a full time unit that works year round with vendors, local, state and federal partners to develop safety plans for large scale events that the city hosts. the unit regularly reviews and updates safety plans, looking at incidents from other parts of the country, like what happened on louisiana's famed bourbon street just hours into 2025, to see if any adjustments should be made. his team is gearing up for sunday's final dallas cowboys game and next friday's cotton bowl at at&t stadium. >> we want visitors to have fun, have a safe time when they come

house in the southern gaza city of khan younis. israeli officials say they targeted hamas militants. gaza's health ministry says 59 people have been killed and more than 270 others wounded in israeli airstrikes over the past 24 hours. the attacks come as hamas announced indirect ceasefire negotiations were expected to resume and a day after the israeli prime minister reportedly authorized multiple agencies to continue the talks in qatar. thousands of demonstrators gathered in tel aviv today, outraged at the israeli government and demanding a deal to get the hostages being held in gaza released. families of the captives criticized israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's handling of the war in gaza, and his government's failure to secure a hostage deal, calling on president elect donald trump to push netanyahu to end the war. in a video released by hamas before the rally, hostage leary is seen speaking under apparent duress. she expressed anguish over the

situation and mentions being held for 450 days. netanyahu's office said he told albert's parents that efforts are ongoing to bring all of the hostages home. chipotle, chipotle. [applause] thousands of demonstrators gathered today in seoul, south korea, to demand the immediate arrest of impeached president yoon suk yeol. the demonstrators are condemning yoon after he evaded attempts by investigators to detain him. the political scandal began last month when yoon declared martial law, an act that had not been done in more than 40 years. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken is expected to hold talks in south korea next week, with an emphasis on u.s, south korean relations and on nuclear armed north korea. in washington, d.c, house speaker mike johnson has won reelection, but it was a close vote. and as fox's chad pergram shows us, johnson won after two republican

before. well, people with disabilities, such as those on the autism spectrum, often have difficulty finding employment. a bay area man is trying to highlight this issue in hopes of changing it as ktvu is. andre senior shows us he received a major assist in his efforts from the sheriff of san francisco. >> say give it about 30s. >> weeks after life changing opportunity, adam sherman is contemplating next steps for a man who few have been on so far, he's fresh off the opportunity of a lifetime, serving as campaign manager for paul miyamoto's reelection bid for san francisco sheriff. >> make sure you just get out and vote. >> it's a multifaceted role. everything from helping to organize fundraising to putting out media blurbs and other forms of publicity. >> but in an election season filled with many campaigns and the people who had them. sherman's situation is different because he is on the autism spectrum, something he's proud to talk about, but one that's kept his ambitions tempered. and he's not the only one. >> there are 5.5 million

autistics in america who are at that age where they can be working and professionals, and yet barely one fifth of them are professionally employed. the rest are either unemployed or chronically underemployed. >> and sherman was no exception. graduating from san francisco state university with a degree in environmental studies with a special concentration in social justice, he found himself unable to find a job in his chosen field, so he took a job stocking shelves at trader joe's. but while he couldn't get the job he wanted, he donated his time volunteering with various community organizations. it was that effort that got him noticed by miyamoto's team. >> he was actually on one of the teams that were doing safety patrols in chinatown, and so his commitment to the community was already evidenced by that volunteer work. >> that commitment and a reputation that preceded him, landed sherman that coveted job, leading miyamoto's critical reelection bid, helping the incumbent snag more than 80% of the votes. entrusting your election campaign to anyone is a

big deal. but miyamoto told me sherman's autism was never a factor in his decision. >> i don't think i even asked any questions about whether or not he'd be able to do things. >> the autism society and advocacy group hopes more companies and organizations actually adopt sheriff miyamoto's thinking, because they see hiring someone on the spectrum is actually good for the bottom line. >> we look at different ways of information processing and different ways of executive function. we might have folks who think in a very systemized way, but we might have folks who think from a bottom up sort of perspective, and that can bring a lot of creativity. >> in other pieces, the organization cites research that shows companies that embrace neurodiversity are likely to have a competitive advantage, and businesses employing autistic individuals report increased innovation and problem solving capabilities. >> i think the idea that when we're open to bringing in neurodiverse and autistic talent to a workplace, understand that there's sometimes let's figure out where the best fit could be.

>> well, barrier weather after some rainfall yesterday. today was day one of our dry stretch and we could be adding on to these numbers quite a bit, at least over the next week and possibly over the next couple of weeks. so it's a dry weather stretch. it's here to stay. we'll check in on some of the rainfall totals across the bay area. as you can expect, well up above the average up in the north bay for santa rosa, san francisco up above the average as well. oakland airport 69% of average, and san jose 83% of average. so here's a look at the rainfall forecast model. and we're showing you some rain out in the pacific but not moving into the bay area. it's a dry weather stretch as we do head into early next week. in fact, all of next week will be dry with maybe just some hazy sunshine. typically, air quality takes a hit with something like this, so we'll have to keep an eye on some of that haze that could develop. here's the satellite and the radar. as you can see, some some rain showers up in the pacific northwest and some rain and snow up toward portland and seattle. for us in northern california, a little
