mornings on two. >> good morning to you. let's take you right outside for a look at san francisco at 7:00 on this sunday morning, where you can see a blanket of clouds hovering and hugging san francisco. only a few buildings, maybe salesforce peeking out from the top there. we see this sometimes on the mornings. welcome to mornings on two. >> i'm claudine wong and hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. let's get you out of the gate immediately and say good morning to rosemary. yes! >> happy sunday. hey, we made it! yes, yes, yesterday and today going to be very similar weather wise. take a look at the storm tracker two. it's a quiet one out there. the winds are generally light. it's a cool start and a little bit of patchy fog. in fact, we are very calm according to this map. take a look at that. from santa rosa to oakland, over towards fairfield. everybody reporting calm conditions. when it comes to the temps. we're within a few degrees of yesterday, which means another chilly start with most of us in the 40s this
7:02 am
morning, 45 degrees in san francisco in our east bay. 38 to start your day in livermore. and let's check in on the patchy fog out there once again this morning. if you're headed towards the sacramento san joaquin valley, you're definitely going to get the tule fog. but for us here at home, not quite as thick as we had yesterday. yesterday, widespread gray over the delta region, the carquinez strait and in the north bay valleys. so we are off to a good start. i'll have a look at what we can expect for the afternoon, as well as the week ahead coming up. >> all right, rosemary, we'll see you in a bit this morning. for the first time this season, you can buy fresh dungeness crab in san francisco. the season usually starts back in november, but it was delayed several times for the safety of migrating whales. >> so today is the day that you can actually head down to the water and buy directly from the fishermen as they come back in from harvesting. ktvu amanda quintana live for us at the pier, with details on a day that these fishermen have been waiting for months. good morning amanda.
7:03 am
>> oh yeah. >> it's very exciting for them and also for people who just love to eat crab. they are ready to come out here and buy just fresh off the boat, so you can buy whole uncooked crab. that's what you can get today. and then this is where we are. so this is near pier 45 right off the way. this is where the boats will be pulling in. and the fishermen will dock here to sell their crabs. so you can buy it right off the boat. and really getting crab to kick off the new year has become a tradition for a lot of san franciscans. but this season, like you mentioned, starting after a lengthy delay. but today regulators are opening commercial crabbing from the sonoma mendocino county line to the southern border. so when sales start, depends really on when those fishers get here. but there is a facebook page where fishers post when and where they will be. one says that they will be here by nine. hopefully they did say they feel like they have
7:04 am
good quality crab on the boat, so that's a good sign. but it's usually about $10 per pound. it's also pretty common for there to be lines out here. so if this is something you want, it might be good to get here early. fishers often sell out as well, but if you are planning on coming out, make sure you bring your own container like a cooler or a bucket, and then be prepared. you might need cash. i know some do venmo or have ways to read your card, but be prepared. have a bucket. >> be ready to fill it up. >> so if you love crab. today is the day i'm sure you're very excited for. >> yes, i love it. amanda and i think all great advice for people who maybe, you know, kind of those first timers who have wanted to take part in this tradition. but i also know that, you know, we were talking about this this morning, that i'm sure there are some longtime folks who who are making the trip. they watch those dates very carefully. and, and this is a
7:05 am
tradition for them to kind of head to the pier. >> definitely. i saw on that facebook page where those fishers post when they're going to be here. i already saw people saying, you know, i'm coming up from san jose. this is something i do every year. let me know when to be there and i'll be there. so clearly this isn't just people in san francisco. it's really all around the greater bay area that people get excited for this and want to come out and be here early. >> yes, i know, i think last year it started even later towards the mid end of january. and so for those folks who usually like to get it on their thanksgiving table, this has been a very long wait. all right, amanda, we'll check in with you in just a bit. thank you so much for that live report. >> time now is 705. the power is back on for thousands of people in san francisco after a major gas leak left them without electricity. the leak started in the city's outer richmond neighborhood yesterday morning, when a roadside crew struck a gas line at balboa and 47th. emergency crews went door to door and evacuated around a dozen people living on the block. a witness described ktvu
7:06 am
all the chaos, saying the leak shot water some 50ft up into the air. >> all of a sudden all #### broke loose and we're like, holy. they hit a bigger pipe. and then we realized it was gas. i mean, it was like the smell was like. it was like sitting in your kitchen, turn your burners on with no gas, with no flame, i mean, literally. and so we just hauled down to the end of the street. >> well, that evacuation order was lifted around three in the afternoon. pge outage map also shows no issues in the area this morning. so good news there and no injuries were reported. >> police are investigating a shooting that happened near a homeless shelter in san francisco last night. it was in the yerba buena neighborhood near fifth and welsh around 6:30 p.m. once on scene, officers say they found a person who had been shot. that person was taken to the hospital with major injuries. police arrested a 29 year old man, they say, based on probable cause, but charges are still pending. >> well, in oakland, police are investigating after an officer who shot and wounded a suspect
7:07 am
there. police say a sergeant spotted an armed suspect firing off a rifle at macarthur boulevard early yesterday morning. police say the sergeant fired at a suspect after they took off running. the suspect then barricaded himself inside a nearby home after a long standoff. the person eventually surrendered. officers say they did recover a firearm. that suspect is expected to survive. and police are still investigating a shooting that happened late friday night near downtown oakland. we first reported this yesterday morning. oakland pd has since updated the location. it happened at 13th and harrington streets, right outside a bar. when officers arrived, they found three people lying on the street, all with gunshot wounds. one of those victims listed in critical condition this morning. so far, there have been no arrests in that shooting. >> well, a man with his newborn baby in his car was arrested after a road rage incident in santa rosa. police say witnesses reported seeing a man in a silver bmw pointing a gun at another driver near west third

street and amador drive. police pulled that driver over just south of highway 12. they say his one month old baby and the child's mother were in the car with him. also in the car was that backpack and it was loaded with a handgun, ammunition, a holster and an extra magazine. the driver, 23 year old calvin crump, was arrested and booked and is facing several charges, including assault with a firearm. >> all lanes back open. highway 101, in santa rosa is california. highway patrol officers continue to investigate a deadly hit and run. this all happened last night just after 10 p.m, officers were dispatched to a crash on highway 101 south of steel lane. there, they found a person lying in the roadway. that person pronounced dead at the scene. officers say they have limited information on the suspect who fled the scene, and they're asking anyone that might have information. give chp a call. >> time now is 708. and ahead of daniel lowery's first day in office, the mayor elect is hitting the streets of san

now we head to the sierra, where nearly a foot of brand new snow fell in the tahoe area during friday's storm. video here, sent
7:14 am
to us by palisades at tahoe resort, employees worked saturday to shovel a fresh blanket of snow from that recent storm. that storm brought with it some gusty winds that prompted the resort to close some of the chairlifts. this is what skiing in olympic valley palisades looked like on friday. fresh snow. pretty crowded mountain to it, of course, is the final, final end of our long two weeks of holidays at tahoe resorts. we're loving it. getting that fresh batch of snow making conditions primo all weekend long. and by the way, the weather at lake level in the mid 40s all week coming up. no rain, no snow. so if you can play a little hooky at work after the holiday, great week to maybe head on up and do a little skiing up in the sierra. >> all the bosses are saying, wait, what? what? what? you guys were just off. get back to work. but the snow does. it does pull you up there. all right, let's take a look at the roads. if you are thinking about heading to tahoe, here's a look at interstate 80 in truckee. now, there are no chain controls, but you can tell that the roadway
7:15 am
there, as people drive through there is still, while clear, could be very icy. it's about 22 degrees right now in truckee, so anything that's on the roadway will be slick. and so this is when we have the black ice and the other things that you can still have a spin out, and it can still be pretty dangerous when you're driving up there. so just take your time and make sure you give yourself some. have those emergency supplies in your car, probably getaway day to. >> a lot of folks have been up there for a week enjoying the holidays, so i imagine highway 80 and 50 will be a little busy coming back. get home day. yes, down in the valley. let's check in with rosemary about our forecast, which looks great. maybe a 70 degree mark this week. close. >> yeah, as we get into the days ahead. not today, but we will be a little bit above average today. and i'll show you those numbers here. coming up giving you a live look over the bay. and we've got mount diablo in view, as well as low clouds and high clouds. those high clouds are coming in from the north and west. and you can see it here on

storm tracker two. we do have a ridge that is building and that is going to keep us not only dry, but help to warm our temperatures. and as we get into the workweek and northeast flow is going to begin to set up, and that will help to drive our temperatures as well. here's a look at the futurecast. there's a look at the ridge right in there. notice a little bit of rain, high elevation snow right over areas of the pacific northwest. by tomorrow and into tuesday, it's sliding on the backside of california. and if you pay attention to our patterns, you know that that system tends to bring in that north and northeast flow as the storm continues to push off to the east, a ridge building in, and we're kind of sandwiched in between. it's the pressure gradient that increases the wind. and so with that, we do expect breezy conditions at times. we expect the gusty conditions and the northeast flow going to help again bring our temperatures up. in addition to the ridge of high pressure that is bringing in warmer air all the way into saturday, you'll notice the storm track continues to be pushed and

deflected by the ridge that is parked off our coastline. so as mentioned a moment ago, we are not expecting any rain here. we are not expecting any snow for the sierra. meanwhile, temperatures this morning off to another chilly start. upper 30s reported in livermore in the north bay, 41 in napa and along the peninsula. 48 sfo headed to san francisco for today. it's going to be chilly up until about 11 12:00. now we're feeling much better mid to upper 50s in the forecast. temperatures expected to top out right about 60 degrees in the city of san francisco. meanwhile, on the peninsula, 63 in redwood city, low 60s in livermore, upper 50s to low 60s in santa rosa. so even though we're a little bit above average, it's still going to be a cool day. but the sun will be shining, partly cloudy. conditions expected into monday. another bump in the numbers. tuesday. wednesday. kind of continuing the path. very subtle warm up coming our way. but late in the business week. perhaps some of our warmer spots getting close to 70 degrees or so. and we do remain with dry

well. happy new year. let's let's kick it off with brock purdy. josh dobbs will take his place today due to purdy's elbow injury last week. a couple of questions. why did the niners play purdy last week? with nothing to gain, and is pretty worth 50 million bucks for a new contract. or perhaps even more. >> well, as to why they played them. players want to play and coaches want their best players to play. and brock purdy is competing for a new contract, and every time he gets the chance to go out there, he gets the chance to prove that he is worth that money. let's be honest, he hasn't exactly had the perfect contract year, right? this isn't like deebo samuel, where he had an amazing historic season before getting his new deal. so i'm sure brock wanted another chance to go out and prove it. unfortunately, it didn't go his way. obviously. is he worth that money? well, that's in the eye of the beholder, but the 40 niners certainly have given every impression that they believe he is. and when your contract is up, it's not a question necessarily of just how good you are. it's also what the market

rate is. and brock's going to get something close to a market rate contract. >> yeah a lot of bread. okay. how about deebo samuel. you brought him up. he's out today. he's got a wrist and a rib injury. is it me or did deebo kind of get old before our eyes, or was this season just an anomaly for him? >> well, i think he was always a player that was going to age poorly. and i think the 40 niners sort of admitted that when they did his new contract, it was only a three year deal, which is a shorter term than you see a lot of contracts. i think the 40 niners themselves knew. he's such a physical, punishing player that he's going to take a lot of hits and a lot of abuse and that may not age very well. and deebo doesn't have some of the other traditional wide receiver skills that might allow you to age gracefully. so i think the 40 niners kind of knew it. and i think that's what we saw this year, is a guy that gets banged up a lot, continued to get banged up and just didn't look like the same player he was in 2021. >> well, let's talk about the season. was it a bust because of the multitude of injuries, or were the niners maybe flawed out
8:25 am
of the gate? what's your opinion? >> yes, it's the answer to that question. it's both of those things. they were a beat up team, a fatigued team, but also a team that had major issues and had plenty of opportunities to win games. despite all that adversity this year and didn't do it, they biffed all over themselves against the cardinals. they did it against the rams. they did it against the seahawks. they did not close teams out when they had the opportunity. it's convenient to point to the injuries and yes, that's part of the issue. but there also were major execution issues with this team, with the players that were on the field. >> all right, jake moody, he had a tough year 23 of 32 on field goals. are they shopping for a new kicker this year or bring him back? >> i'm stunned to say that i think there's a chance that he's at least going to have the ability to fight for his job next year. now, they didn't make a change with one game to go because maybe they figured, what does it matter? and maybe they go into the offseason and make a change. but kyle shanahan
8:26 am
repeatedly talked about how talented he thinks jake moody is. and they did invest a third round pick in them. and teams don't like to generally admit mistakes. if they cut jake moody, they have to admit that they were crazy to take a kicker in the third round. and a lot of teams don't like to do it, so there is a possibility that he has a chance to at least fight for his job in 2025 and quickly. >> 10s who do you like in the super bowl? >> rob i can't bet against the chiefs. they've done it too many times. they've hurt me. i can't bet against them until i see them actually lose. >> yeah, 15 and one. they are looking pretty good. all right. hey rob, thanks so much for being with us each week. we so appreciate your insight and of course your time. and quickly, can you tell our viewers how they can find your podcast? >> just search 49ers gold standard wherever you get podcasts or on youtube and we pop right up. >> very good. rob. all the best. happy new year and many thanks again and stay with ktvu. gmc sports weekend coming up at 830. our fox pregame at 9 to 10. saints buccaneers. we got a couple of games today at 10:00 in the niners. cardinals comes on right after that saints game.
