the killer scouted the area before those attacks and also traveled to egypt as well as canada. good evening once again, everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm betty yu, and now they're investigating how that may or may not be tied into the attack on new year's day. prior to the tragedy, shamsuddin jabbar made at least two trips to new orleans in the months leading up to the attack. the fbi says by using advanced meta glasses, jabbar recorded himself biking through the french quarter on one of those trips. investigators say he also had the video recording glasses on during wednesday's attack, but the glasses were not activated. this video, obtained by the fbi, shows jabbar with the glasses on during that new orleans trip, both state and federal officials reiterated that there are no other suspects. >> investigative details and evidence that we have now still support that jabbar acted alone here in new orleans. we have not

seen any indications of an accomplice in the united states, but we are still looking into potential associates in the us and outside of our borders. >> the fbi also shared videos of jabbar placing ieds around bourbon street, and investigators say they found a transmitter intended to trigger the two bombs. the new orleans mayor says the focus now is increased security, especially leading up to big events like the super bowl and mardi gras. the governor is officially declaring days of mourning for each of the 14 victims starting tomorrow. washington, d.c. is also on high alert, preparing for several prominent events over the next few weeks. tomorrow is the official certification of the election and the fourth anniversary of the january 6th riot at the capitol. then, just days later on thursday, former president jimmy carter's state funeral will be in the nation's capital. and on january 20th, d.c. will host the inauguration of

president elect donald trump. u.s. capitol police chief thomas manger tells fox the department is fully prepared and coordinating with local as well as federal law enforcement. a number of large events happening in the next month, and we'll be closely monitoring them all. you can stay up to date by downloading the fox local app, available to download to your phone and smart tv. >> all right, now to the weather in the midwest as well as back east, all of it affecting travel out at san francisco international, where more than 150 flights were delayed. just today. as we give you a live look here out at sfo on this sunday night. by the way, more than 20 flights were canceled out at san francisco international today as well. now, all of this largely due to a major winter storm hitting much of the midwest. blizzard like conditions have been reported across much of kansas and northwestern missouri, and some areas could see their heaviest snowfall in ten years. around 63 million americans were under some type of weather advisory. today, the national weather service is issuing winter storm warnings all the

way to new jersey. ktvu lamonica peters heard from some travelers in the bay area seeing the effect of that storm. >> things are calm here at sfo despite the delays. people i spoke to say they did experience some holdups, but they were still able to get ahead of that storm. >> there's a predicted to have like eight plus inches of snow, and so i actually had to change my travel plans. i was supposed to leave tomorrow, 1030 eastern time, but i moved it to today because i wanted to beat out the winter storm. >> several states in the midwest and on the east coast are being affected by the first major snowstorm of the year. by sunday evening at san francisco international airport, 171 flights had been delayed and 22 flights were canceled. this passenger says he flew in from chicago. >> it was cold in chicago, but overall everything was pretty smooth. really no complaints. it was only here when we got to sfo, where there was a lot of

before arriving at the airport. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> the bay area's homeless population has gone up since last year, according to a report released by the department of housing and urban development. the number of homeless people in the bay area grew 6% to roughly 38,000. the increases were consistent statewide and nationally. california's homeless population increased 3% to 187,000 people, while across the u.s. the number of homeless people increased 18% to more than 770,000. dallas and los angeles were among some of the big cities that saw their homeless populations drop. >> the oakland city council will meet to discuss upcoming changes to the city in a special reorganization meeting scheduled for tomorrow. the newly elected council members will be sworn in. the city council will also elect a president pro tem and a council president. this all comes after former city council president nikki fortunato bass

served as oakland's interim mayor for the last two weeks of the year, after mayor shang tao was recalled in the november election. bass is moving on to the alameda county board of supervisors after winning the november election for a seat on the board. the newly newly elected oakland city council president will serve as interim mayor until the special election for mayor is held on april 15th. the city's district two seat will also be appointed at tomorrow's meeting. the oakland unified school board is holding a special meeting tomorrow morning to elect the president and vice president of the governing board. the candidates are already elected members on the school board. that meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:00. >> new tonight. an unusual bus for the santa clara sheriff's office stopping the prime suspects after deputies say they stole over $1,000 worth of meat. it all happened at a cupertino, safeway ktvu. zac sos has the story. >> wow. okay. >> awesome. i'm so glad they got caught. yes. well done.

money. >> just to work right now, as salmon season is closed, most fishermen are salmon and crab. salmon seasons have been closed for the last two years, and crowds have been shortening down to smaller and smaller. >> crab season is expected to last until about march or april. >> well, the beginning of crab season is also welcome news for restaurants. water bar in san francisco says it's very excited that crab season is back. the restaurant along the embarcadero is known for its upscale seafood dishes. earlier, we spoke with park ulrich, the executive chef and partner at epic steak and water bar. he says they normally have crab on the menu year round from other regions, but there's nothing like getting it fresh off the boat when you're supporting the local fishermen, you know that they're able to go out when it becomes salmon season or other seasons. >> so yes, to get to be able to get crab, that's right off the boat. you know, that's just another selling point for our

corvallis, oregon, collapsed as a freight train was crossing yesterday. and this story does begin tonight's west coast rap. >> the collapse sent a rail car carrying a chemical used for fertilizer right into the river. officials say the collapse was due to a structure failure on the trestle. no one was hurt. the rail car was still in the river today, and railroad crews working to unload and remove the cars near the area where the bridge collapsed, trying to avoid any leaked material from getting into the water. >> the railroad track over on that side of the river doesn't go anywhere, so there's two locomotives stuck on the wrong side of the river. they have. it doesn't connect anywhere, so they have no way to get the locomotives back without repairing the bridge.

>> residents are being asked to avoid the area until repairs are complete. the city is now working to resolve the situation quickly and minimize any environmental impact. in washington state, ever since, a video of an orca pushing her dead calf through the washington water surface, concern for the killer whale population off the state's coast has increased. >> this calf's death comes after the loss of two precious calves last year. the director of development for the orca conservancy says people have been grieving alongside this whale. experts are using the situation as a moment to ask for help. on tuesday, the board of natural resources is expected to meet and vote on an executive order passed in 2022 that upholds a ban on commercial net pens out of public waters, with net pens is. >> in 2018, there was an escape of a bunch of those fish, and these fish tend to carry a lot of sea lice and different types of diseases. and so that poses a

revealed that phillips station, there is 91% of the average for this time of year, with a snow depth of 24in. state water experts say we're going to need a lot more big cold storms over the next few months in order to keep our water levels above average. since most of the state's water supply does come from the sierra snowpack. >> that was a beautiful sight there. roberto gonzalez is here with a look at the forecast now. seems like a great time to head up to tahoe for you and me, because we're talking about how we're chickens driving in the snow, right? i don't want to do it. >> yeah, my big worry is that we're just going to shut off and not see any more breaks, but not big long breaks, right in the next shot of snow and rain right now looks like the 21st of january, but that's a long way to go and things can change in a hurry. right now, let's take a look at the current conditions. it is clear it is in the 40s in blue canyon, right around 4000ft in elevation. then you jump up to 6500ft. it's 25 degrees around the rim of the greater lake tahoe area. 20s around

truckee. at this hour. we don't have any snow in the forecast for this entire week with partly sunny skies, but notice the temperature dips significantly on tuesday night, and that will set the stage for cooler conditions on your wednesday and also some windy conditions. ski lifts could be placed on a hold, so make sure you always keep track of your conditions. look at this condition right here, right now. this is the golden gate bridge. now that's the span about 220ft above the water. so it gives you a good idea just how low that fog bank is at this hour. we'll wake up to some areas of patchy fog tomorrow morning, then turning partly sunny. temperatures 58 to right around 6364 degrees. and here you go. we have the area of low pressure providing some precipitation into the pacific northwest. this low is going to settle in over the colorado rockies. then we've got that area of high pressure between the two. it's a pressure gradient. plus we have the counterclockwise winds around

that low. so it produces an offshore push. and indeed we will see also because of the current weather pattern set up more big waves 18 to 20ft. so by the time you wake up tomorrow morning we have a beach hazard statement in effect through tuesday night. tonight, with the areas of fog. temperatures into the 30s and 40s were already reporting foggy conditions, with visibility down to a half a mile in the santa rosa area. meanwhile, tomorrow morning's temperatures just slightly warmer than today. boy, it was gorgeous today. numbers in the 50s and 60s. we should be right around the mid 50s for this time of the year, but check this out. the winds are going to ramp up on monday and tuesday into your wednesday. warmest day of the workweek will be on thursday. we could see a wind advisory go into effect. we'll stay on top of that right here at ktvu. >> thanks, roberta. well, here's a look at the stories trending trending tonight on ktvu.com.

houses the headquarters for the diablo region's meals on wheels, and walnut creek is up for sale. the building on civic drive and carlebach avenue has been vacant for more than two years. due to fire damage, the organization decided to list the property after finally reaching a settlement with the insurance company. meals on wheels. diablo region will continue to operate from its temporary office space while it searches for a permanent location in the area. >> celebrating all things fungus. today, the mycological society on marin in marin of marin hosted its annual wild and marin fungus festival at the mill valley community center. the event featured an extensive display of wild mushrooms picked from all over the bay area. there were mushroom themed products including art, clothing, and of course, food. we spoke to one vendor who turns mushrooms into miso. >> if you're lucky and fortunate to become more skilled as foragers, you come across a lot of mushrooms and you have to

figure out what to do with the bounty of those mushrooms. and so fermentation becomes a beautiful way to preserve that bounty. so that's how we got into turning those mushrooms into miso. >> the event also featured workshops and speakers who spoke about mushrooms being used for medicinal purposes. >> san francisco's glide paid tribute to outgoing mayor london breed this morning. glide hosted a special celebration at the church on ellis street ahead of breed's final days in office. mayor breed lost the november election to daniel lurie. his inauguration will be on wednesday. london breed spoke at the celebration and reflected on her faith and time in public service. >> since i've been mayor, we've helped to increase our shelter capacity by over 70%. we've increased our permanent supportive housing by over 50%, and we have helped over 20,000 people exit homelessness.
