being stabbed at the hayward bart station. details on how this may have unfolded.
7:31 pm
following a fight between riders over paying a fare. a beloved mailman in the city of lafayette is calling it a career. the heartfelt sendoff by the community on his last day on the job, and new details emerging about a kidnaper that made national headlines in a case out of vallejo. the victims at the center of that case, now speaking out after the kidnaper, has been charged with more crimes. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> good evening, and thanks for joining me on this tuesday night, i'm cristina rendon. we begin tonight with the man at the center of a notorious vallejo kidnaping case that has been charged with new crimes in another bay area city. the victims in that case spoke out today as authorities give new details into these new charges. ktvu crime reporter henry lee kicks things off. >> it's something that he's crafted and perfected over a long period of time. he had all the markers of a serial predator. >> in 2015, denise huskins was kidnaped in vallejo by an
7:32 pm
intruder, who then raped her in a south lake tahoe cabin. but she and now husband aaron quinn were branded hoaxers by vallejo police because many of the details of their ordeal were deemed too far fetched. >> the people you go to for help turn on you, and then society turns on you, and social media turns on you, and you have nowhere to go. >> the couple, speaking out after their attacker, matthew mueller, was charged with other crimes in two other counties, once again proving they were telling the truth. last week, mueller was charged by the santa clara da with home invasions in mountain view and palo alto. in 2009. on monday, the contra costa da charged mueller with kidnaping three victims near san ramon in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars in ransom. that case happened just two weeks after the vallejo ordeal. the victims were so terrified they didn't come forward until investigators recently contacted them. >> it was not until mueller initiated his contact and made admissions to what occurred that
7:33 pm
law enforcement had any indication that these crimes had actually transpired. >> this is what law enforcement and survivors working together looks like. >> it was seaside police chief nick borges who apologized to the couple on behalf of law enforcement, gained their trust and wrote letters to mueller in prison. mueller allegedly made statements that helped lead to additional charges. >> listening. working with victims and survivors following evidence. this is not to make anyone look bad. this is a positive day for everyone. >> el dorado county da vern pierson, who along with the fbi also worked the new cases, said evidence shows mueller has been invading homes since he was 16. >> an exceptionally practiced in the art of sneaking into people's houses and terrorizing them. >> alameda county sheriff's lieutenant misty caruso helped crack a dublin home invasion committed by mueller. >> i implore everybody to be kinder, to make sure that the information that we are putting out there is correct, that mistakes don't get made again.
7:34 pm
like this. >> mueller is serving 40 years in a federal prison in arizona. that's where the feds interviewed him in person. but for now, he's being held at santa clara county jail, and he'll appear in the contra costa county case at a later date in seaside. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> developing tonight, some bay area firefighters have been pre-positioned close to where a fast moving wildfire is burning in southern california. a live look for you here at the situation in pacific palisades, where several homes have already been lost. the palisades fire started this morning as santa ana winds returned to the area. it has already grown to nearly 3000 acres just yesterday. cal fires. san mateo santa cruz unit sent five engines to the l.a. area. fox eleven's chelsea edwards shows us some of the firefighting underway tonight. >> look up there. you can see those columns. you see the fire just kind of shooting out of them right now. that's certainly what it appears to be. again, it's very hard to get oriented where we are just because of
7:35 pm
this thick black smoke. come down a little bit, elliot. you can see the structure just a few minutes ago that was standing whatever that was. now it's just a few beams. we just saw some huge collapses of some of the major structural beams there. there's hardly anything left there. and if you go even further south on pch, i mean, we're just seeing these big clouds of black smoke sweeping down the hillside and coming toward the ocean. not sure what it is up there that's burning, but it looks like they're kind of repositioning a lot of their their firefighting efforts down this way. we just saw a convoy of fire officials that just were rushing down pch. i see another one that's up in the distance coming down from the north. and again, you got like a police officer here. so it seems that they're focusing some of their efforts now on this section, which is south of sunset boulevard along pch. and you know, we're looking at these structures that are burning. take a look up there. you see a ridge now on fire. the good news from where we're standing, at least everything on this hillside is already burned. this is all charred. you just see some embers now. but everything
7:36 pm
to the sides of it are going up. i mean, that was nothing. just a 60s ago. and now you can see that ridge fully engulfed now, just up to the north a little bit. you can see this wind as well. i mean, it's just just blowing now up, there's a mobile home park that we have gotten reports that there are some structures that are on fire up there. again, we have not independently confirmed those. we're not near any fire officials right now, so haven't confirmed that. but again, with the smoke that we're seeing and the sounds that we're hearing, i mean, just sounds like huge structures, stones are falling down. you just can't make out what's going on. but i mean, just something to behold here. again, that structure is now gone. there's nothing left of that. and look at the just the ferocity. the ferocity of this fire that's sweeping down toward the beach. now, look at that black smoke. i mean, whatever is burning up there is just completely engulfed in flames. it's sweeping across pch. we saw it burning on the other side of pch for a little while. i mean, there's nothing on this side
7:37 pm
really to burn other than some grass. and then you've got the beach and the water. so i mean, that's the good news. at least on this stretch, there are no homes right where we're standing on this side of pch. of course, you go north and south, and that's not the case in other places. so i assume that's what firefighters are working on, trying to protect some of the structures that are on pch, because this wind is certainly pushing the flames that direction. i mean, they're coming down the mountain and then toward the ocean. so, you know, it's hard to see what's happening down there. we see a lot of emergency personnel. here's another part of that convoy, or at least a few other fire officials that are heading down there toward the south. so that's kind of where it looks like a lot of the action is happening. but just just quite a scene to behold. i mean, it is just wild up here. you see a palm tree. i don't know if you can see this, elliott, but see up at the very top. that's a tall palm tree up there that was on fire just a second ago. you can see how parts of it are burning. it's you've got embers kind of in the trunk of that palm tree and then up on the fronds as well. so that's
7:38 pm
certainly a concern as well. you know, you get one of those palm fronds that is on fire and then gets carried in this wind. i mean, as we've said many times, they can go up, you know, as far as two miles. so you've got homes all up and down pch all up in these hillsides as well. i mean, we're right in the pacific palisades, santa monica, just this way. and then you've got malibu up there. so a lot of residential areas. and when you look at things like that, i mean, there's no way that firefighters can do anything about that without air support. i mean, that is so tall when you look at the height of where those embers are on that palm tree. so if you get those embers, you get those fronds that start flying around, especially in these winds, there's just nothing anybody can do. i mean, wherever they land, you're just at that mercy. i mean, there's, there's no way to predict where they're going to go and there's no way to fix it if they do land and catch something on fire. so very dangerous situation out here. and again, we're seeing a lot more support. i see more firefighters that are coming from the north down to the south down here on pch to deal with whatever is happening down there. so it appears that this fire is kind of moving in this,
7:39 pm
this southwesterly direction. again, kind of hard to get oriented on exactly where we are because it's just so hard to see. the visibility is so low here. but i mean, look again, just look at this. it just keeps getting worse. it seems like it just structures back there. whatever is back there. hopefully everybody got out and was able to evacuate because this this whole hillside is just gone. >> that was fox eleven's chelsea edwards reporting. for updates on this developing story, tap into our fox local app. our online coverage includes details of where people are being evacuated and the state of emergency that have already been declared by the state and the city of los angeles. and to streamline their response effort. police are investigating a stabbing at a hayward bart station that halted operations this morning. it happened shortly after 10 a.m. near the entrance turnstile of the station. investigators say a rider who didn't pay was confronted by a rider who did pay. that resulted in a fight where one person was stabbed. the person was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. two people were initially detained, but bart says they
7:40 pm
were later determined to not be involved and were released. >> it is not so bad, especially during commuting hours. there's a lot of people, so you know, you're kind of safer. but it's strange that this happened, you know, during the day. >> service resumed around 1:00 this afternoon. police are still investigating what exactly happened, and they're asking anyone with information to contact them. cracking down on rv encampments. coming up, a new effort by san jose to clear out oversize vehicles on neighborhood streets. and a warning from the chp about a new amber alert scam. how fraudsters are targeting unsuspecting parents. [music] >> and barry, whether the extreme wind in southern california is kind of linked up to the bay area weather pattern as well. we do have wind advisories and e mild

a program to reduce the number of lined in rvs on the streets. starting thursday, residents of this rv encampment on chenoweth avenue will be the first of 30 sites to receive notice that they have two weeks to move. city teams will give people in the rvs information about transitional housing and safe, sanctioned parking sites for them to move to after this two week heads up. tow trucks will come in to remove any remaining rvs. opponents of the program say it will put more homeless people at risk, while mayor matt mehan says this program is about safety for everyone. >> we just can't have people permanently encamped in unsanctioned, unmanaged and often very unsafe conditions on city streets. >> the pilot program is set to

run through the end of the year. turning now to our weather. clear and mild. out tonight in a live look we do have in emeryville a live look. well, we don't, but things have been pretty mild, right? so pretty good for us here compared to what's happening down in southern california. >> yeah southern california this is all linked up to the same weather pattern, but thankfully we're not talking about those extreme winds here in the bay area. but i had to remind myself it's january. we're talking about a major wildfire still in the state. in fact, this was the scene today looking out toward the palisades fire here. and there's a satellite imagery showing you that big smoke plume moving out into the pacific. and unfortunately, as you've been probably hearing about those winds that developed today will continue to increase later on tonight into tomorrow morning. so a red flag warning in place tuesday, wednesday and thursday. damaging winds to our south. potentially some of the higher peaks could have gusts approaching 100 miles an hour. and the relative humidity, that's a very dry pattern, possibly down into the single digits. so here is that satellite once again showing the smoke plume and the current conditions right around the fire
7:45 pm
zone. the winds continue to pick up out of the north, this time gusting to 28 miles an hour. and the relative humidity is right around 20%. so that will be the key concern. obviously, over the next few days, with those real strong winds and extreme wind event down to our south here in the bay area, you can see the winds here. mount saint helena gusting to 76 miles an hour. santa rosa at about 36 miles an hour. and here is the overall weather setup. you can see a big ridge here, and then a big trough down in southern california. and that pressure difference sets up the wind event. and of course the extreme winds focus to our south. current wind reports here in the bay area there's fairfield. you can see gusts to 28 miles an hour. oakland gusting to nearly actually 36 miles an hour. some more reports for you here. and as you can see here, not to not not as strong out toward hayward or san jose, but half moon bay winds gusting to 25 miles an hour. here's a look at our live camera looking above san francisco and current numbers in the 50s and the 60s. so today was warmer than yesterday. here's a look. looks like we
7:46 pm
have a repeat graphic. once again, we're showing you those strong winds from earlier today. and the wind advisory is in place until 10:00 tomorrow morning for most of the bay area, the one exception being in the santa clara valley in the santa clara valley. so fair skies, a bit of a breeze tomorrow. still some wind for the hills. you can see the forecast model. you can see the winds do back off throughout the day on your wednesday, but still breezy. but we'll scale back on those strong wind speeds throughout the day. this is the setup, an upper level area of high pressure here. an area of low pressure out out. in southern california. that pressure difference is setting up that wind event for today. it is also keeping us dry. so no rain in our forecast. mostly sunny skies and mild conditions. look ahead. your five day it is dry, maybe a little bit cooler in your friday, and maybe another pulse of some winds moving into the bay area on saturday. we could have some breezy conditions for that time frame, but we'll continue to keep an eye on those strong winds to our south. that firefight will be difficult once again for tonight into tomorrow. christina. >> all right, mark, thank you.
